For the first time, my internet fell Erev Shabbos. The cable to the router was too short so I put in an extension. The maid accidently pulled out the extension. What is embarrassing about the delay that I did not check the full length of the cable but only both ends as I thought it was one piece.
Parsha
Ki Sisa
Whenever I see Parsha Ki Sisa, I
know that the 4 Parshiyos are just around the corner starting with Parsha
Shekelim related to the first section of our Parsha. It also means that a Rabbi
must find a Chiddush for teaching the laws and preparations for Pesach. My wife
and daughter have already in Adar Aleph started their spring-Pesach cleaning.
After the initial donations
requested for the Mishkan and the definition of holy items and the clothing of
the Cohanim comes the annual membership fee in the Mishkan-Temple. This is a
minimum fee and one can donate more.
30:11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 12 'When thou take the sum of the children of Israel,
according to their number, then shall they give every man a ransom for his soul
unto the LORD, when thou number them; that there be no plague among them, when
thou number them.
For numbering and limiting the
numbers could heaven forbid cause a spiritual evil-eye upon Yisrael.
13 This they shall give, every one that passes
among them that are numbered, half a shekel after the shekel of the sanctuary--the
shekel is twenty gerahs--half a shekel for an offering to the LORD.
All men of each tribe are created equal. This goes to
show you a Ben Yisrael learning by himself is a half but with a Chavruta
(learning partner) he becomes whole. - Menashe
17 And the LORD spoke unto
Moses, saying: 18 'Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and the
base thereof of brass, whereat to wash; and thou shalt put it between the tent
of meeting and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. 19 And
Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet thereat;
The brass laver was made of mirrors
of women who used make-up and kind words that the Bnei Yisrael would reproduce
during the wicked Gezairos of Pharaoh.
20 when
they go into the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, that they die
not; or when they come near to the altar to minister, to cause an offering made
by fire to smoke unto the LORD; 21 so they shall wash their hands and
their feet, that they die not; and it shall be a statute for ever to them, even
to him and to his seed throughout their generations.'
Cohanim
could only practice or observe if they are ritually pure including hands and
bare feet.
31:1 1 And the LORD spoke unto
Moses, saying: 2 'See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri,
the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah; 3 and I have filled him with
the spirit of God, in wisdom, and in understanding, and in knowledge, and in
all manner of workmanship,
He was skilled in design, wood
work, foundry, metal work.
4 to devise skillful works, to work in gold, and in silver,
and in brass, 5 and in cutting of stones for setting, and in carving
of wood, to work in all manner of workmanship.
Stone cutting and knowledge of the
Samir (a worm) or as Fred Juneaman suggest a radioactive form of copper dioxide
that could cut through stone.
6 And I, behold, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son
of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the hearts of all that are
wise-hearted I have put wisdom, that they may make all that I have commanded thee:
He was also skilled in wood work
and the workings of tailoring of garments. Last but not least olive oil
manufacturing and combining spices into certain chemical compounds.
7 the tent of meeting, and the ark of the
testimony, and the ark-cover that is thereupon, and all the furniture of the
Tent; 8 and the table and its vessels, and the pure candlestick with
all its vessels, and the altar of incense; 9 and the altar of
burnt-offering with all its vessels, and the laver and its base; 10 and
the plaited garments, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the
garments of his sons, to minister in the priest's office; 11 and the
anointing oil, and the incense of sweet spices for the holy place; according to
all that I have commanded thee shall they do.'
These men were young, energetic and masters in their
trades.
12 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 13 'Speak
thou also unto the children of Israel, saying: Verily ye shall keep My
sabbaths, for it is a sign between Me and you throughout your generations, that
ye may know that I am the LORD who sanctify you.
And you, speak to the children of
Israel: But
[as for] you, although I have mandated you to command them [the Israelites]
concerning the work of the Mishkan, do not let it seem to you that you may
easily set aside the Sabbath because of that work. Only keep My Sabbaths!: Although you will be rushed to perform the work [of the
Mishkan] quickly, the Sabbath shall not be set aside because of it. All
instances of אַ and רַק
[imply limitations, i.e.,] are exclusive, to exclude the Sabbath from the work
of the Mishkan. For it
is a sign between Me and you: It is
a sign of distinction between us that I have chosen you, by granting you as an
inheritance My day of rest for [your] rest. To know: [So
that] the nations [should know] that I, the Lord, sanctify you.
Rashi is telling us that guarding
the Shabbos rest is no easy task. When a person goes out to guard the border of
his country, he has his weapon and ever-ready to use it in case of infiltration
by the enemy or thieves. Here one is guarding from his own nature to work and
those of his area so one is on guard each week close to 25 hours straight not
to do a Melacha. If the Yetzer was without that would be hard enough but the
Yetzer to do a Melacha is within and done with diligence. The Bnei Yisrael are
on contract between them and their Creator. The contract is binding until
death. For Shabbos the nation of Yisrael is sanctified.
14 Ye shall keep the sabbath therefore, for it is holy unto
you; every one that profanes it shall surely be put to death; for whosoever does
any work therein, that soul shall be cut off from among his people.
Shall be put to death: If there are witnesses and a warning. Will be cut off: without
warning. -[from Mechilta] Those who
desecrate it: Heb. מְחַלְלֶיהָ,
[those] who treat its sanctity as profane.
One needs two witnesses with a
proper warning of the penalty involved and the person also has to understand
what Shabbos is. For a person like I was 56 years ago being non-observant on one side of the family at least 6th
generation and the other side perhaps 3rd or 4th
generation could not understand what Shabbos was, what belief is, what Orthodox
Jews do on Shabbos. It must have been about 54 years ago that I was starting to
truly observe Shabbos first alone and then being invited to families as I
joined a Minyan. The whole way of Jewish Life and much of Jewish Food was new
to me. Chutney, Kugel, cows feet jello of Russian Jews, Falafel etc. I did have
some ideas from my family but never ever had a real Shabbos. So lack of
education would exempt somebody just as an imbecil, deaf mute, child, non-Jew
and insane person would not and should not be put to death.
Living on the outside of Judaism as
I was, I could not have been more cut off. One Reform Rabbi did not even
believe in G-D and to this day can't figure out why he was a Rabbi. Other
Rabbis were happy in the job and did nothing for Kashrus, Shabbos, Family
Purity and even then some were having intermarriage ceremonies. So the idea of
a death penalty or Kares (cutting off) could not even enter my mind, that of my
cousins or Jewish Friends.
In fact the concept of holy or
profane did not exist by me. For my Orthodox Readers this may sound like
another planet and the concept of Shabbos for the child brought up as a
red-blood American First and a Jew by Birth. Even the US Concept "For G-D
and Country" was removed.
15 Six days shall work be done; but on the seventh day is a
sabbath of solemn rest, holy to the LORD; whosoever does any work in the
sabbath day, he shall surely be put to death.
A Sabbath of complete
rest: Heb. שַׁבָּתשַׁבָּתוֹן,
a reposeful rest, not a casual rest. (a
Sabbath of complete rest: For this reason,
Scripture repeated it [the word, שַׁבָּת],
to inform [us] that on it all work is prohibited, even what is needed for food.
Similarly regarding Yom Kippur, in whose context it says: “It is a Sabbath of
complete rest for you” (Lev. 23:32), all
work is prohibited. However, concerning festivals it says only: “on the first
day is a rest, and on the eighth day is a rest” (Lev. 23:39),
[meaning that] on them [i.e., on holidays] only servile work is prohibited, but
work needed for food [preparation] is permitted.) Holy to the Lord: The observance of its sanctity shall be for My name and by My
commandment.
If you believe in holiness and
sanctity then observe and avoid death. Imbeciles, children and completely
boorish people like I was have the compassion of HASHEM that they live.
16 Wherefore the children of Israel shall keep the sabbath,
to observe the sabbath throughout their generations, for a perpetual
covenant.
Shabbos is an eternal contract
(Bris) for all generations of the children of Israel.
17 It is a sign between Me and the children of Israel for
ever; for in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day He
ceased from work and rested.'
And rested: Heb. וַיִּנָפַשׁ. As the Targum
[Onkelos] renders: וְנָח, and rested. Now
every expression of נוֹפֶשׁ, rest, is an
expression of נֶפֶשׁ, soul, for one
regains one’s soul and one’s breath when one rests from the toil of work. He
about Whom it is written: “He neither tires nor wearies” (Isa. 40:28), and
Whose every act is performed by speech [alone, without physical effort],
dictated rest in reference to Himself [only] in order to make it understood to
the [human] ear with words that it can understand.
When somebody wants to convert to
Judaism we ask them to continue violating Shabbos until they full convert. Why
because Shabbos is an Ot (sign) between ME and the Bnei Yisrael. Only when one
becomes a Ben or Bas Yisrael are they deemed worthy of observing Shabbos.
18 And He gave unto Moses, when He had made an end of
speaking with him upon mount Sinai, the two tables of the testimony, tables of
stone, written with the finger of God.
Prior to the golden calf the two
Luchos of Sapphire Stone were carved by HASHEM.
Murphy's Law: whatever is bound to
go wrong will go wrong so it happened to Moshe and Rabbi Pauli's internet
Fell Erev Shabbos.
32:1 And when the people saw that Moses
delayed to come down from the mount, the people gathered themselves together
unto Aaron, and said unto him: 'Up, make us a god who shall go before us; for
as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we know
not what is become of him.'
It would have been bad enough if
they had asked Aaron to do something as Moshe had not returned. The
Satan caused them to see a funeral
in heaven so they thought that Moshe died. So they became a mob and when Hur
tried to stop them, he was murdered.
2 And Aaron said unto them: 'Break off the golden rings,
which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and
bring them unto me.' 3 And all the people broke off the golden rings
which were in their ears, and brought them unto Aaron. 4 And he received
it at their hand, and fashioned it with a graving tool, and made it a molten
calf; and they said: 'This is thy god, O Israel, which brought thee up out of
the land of Egypt.'
He did not believe this calf but
they said what they said as an excuse for making merry.
5 And when Aaron saw this, he built an altar before it; and
Aaron made proclamation, and said: 'To-morrow shall be a feast to the
LORD.' 6 And they rose up early on the morrow, and offered
burnt-offerings, and brought peace-offerings; and the people sat down to eat
and to drink, and rose up to make merry.
If they had not made a public
statue of a calf but each privately Am Yisrael could have entered Eretz
Yisrael. However, publicly and to make promiscuously merry was too much.
7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses: 'Go, get thee down; for thy
people, that thou brought up out of the land of Egypt, have dealt
corruptly; 8 they have turned aside quickly out of the way which I
commanded them; they have made them a molten calf, and have worshipped it, and
have sacrificed unto it, and said: This is thy god, O Israel, which brought
thee up out of the land of Egypt.'
Moshe was not angry at this point
because he did not fully picture or comprehend what HASHEM was telling him.
9 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'I have seen this people,
and, behold, it is a stiffnecked people. 10 Now therefore let Me
alone, that My wrath may wax hot against them, and that I may consume them; and
I will make of thee a great nation.' 11 And Moses besought the LORD
his God, and said: 'LORD, why doth Thy wrath wax hot against Thy people, that
Thou hast brought forth out of the land of Egypt with great power and with a
mighty hand? 12 Wherefore should the Egyptians speak, saying: For
evil did He bring them forth, to slay them in the mountains, and to consume
them from the face of the earth? Turn from Thy fierce wrath, and repent of this
evil against Thy people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Israel, Thy
servants, to whom Thou didst swear by Thine own self, and said unto them: I will
multiply your seed as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken
of will I give unto your seed, and they shall inherit it
forever.' 14 And the LORD repented of the evil which He said He would
do unto His people. 15 And Moses turned, and went down from the
mount, with the two tables of the testimony in his hand; tables that were
written on both their sides; on the one side and on the other were they
written.
Some letters had centers
miraculously held in place. In Talmud Megillah there is a dispute if they were
old Hebrew letters or modern Aramaic letters.
16 And the tables were the work of God, and the writing was
the writing of God, graven upon the tables. 17 And when Joshua heard
the noise of the people as they shouted, he said unto Moses: 'There is a noise
of war in the camp.'
Yehoshua slept at the entrance to
the mount and ate there 24/7 to serve his Rabbi.
18 And he said: 'It is not the voice of them that shout for
mastery, neither is it the voice of them that cry for being overcome, but the
noise of them that sing do I hear.' 19 And it came to pass, as soon
as he came nigh unto the camp, that he saw the calf and the dancing; and Moses'
anger waxed hot, and he cast the tables out of his hands, and broke them
beneath the mount.
After all he had done for the Bnei
Yisrael he just lost it.
20 And he took the calf which they had made, and burnt it
with fire, and ground it to powder, and strewed it upon the water, and made the
children of Israel drink of it.
Did you ever put your tongue as a
child to a metallic poll or something? I learned from an engineer from Burma who
would put his tongue to samples of steel or aluminum to 'taste' them for
knowledge. I can assure you that the taste is not pleasant.
21 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'What did this people unto
thee, that thou hast brought a great sin upon them?' 22 And Aaron
said: 'Let not the anger of my lord wax hot; thou know the people, that they
are set on evil. 23 So they said unto me: Make us a god, which shall
go before us; for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land
of Egypt, we know not what is become of him.
When one is surrounded by 6000 men
and women and perhaps even a larger crowd under 20years of age and they just
murdered Hur what was I to do?
24 And I said unto them: Whosoever hath any gold, let them
break it off; so they gave it me; and I cast it into the fire, and there came
out this calf.'
The way he is telling the story it
is as he did not make a mold but either used the Divine NAME or just poured out
the gold. But previously, it looked like he shaped it or somebody shaped it.
25 And when Moses saw that the people were broken loose--for
Aaron had let them loose for a derision among their enemies.
There was lack of discipline and
the people were running wild. Aaron, the Priest, was serving the needs of the people.
Moshe, the Prophet, was serving the will of G-D.
26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp, and said: 'Whoso
is on the LORD'S side, let him come unto me.' And all the sons of Levi gathered
themselves together unto him. 27 And he said unto them: 'Thus saith
the LORD, the God of Israel: Put ye every man his sword upon his thigh, and go
to and fro from gate to gate throughout the camp, and slay every man his
brother, and every man his companion, and every man his neighbor.'
Neighbor? The tribes kept together
but the encampment had Levi in the middle and Reuven and Gad were neighbors of
Korach and that is what happened for each section of Leviim had a different
tribe near them and thus they came and took care of the revelers. For most
riots start with a few bad people or as we see later half a percent or 3,000
out of 606,000 men.
28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses;
and there fell of the people that day about three thousand
men. 29 And Moses said: 'Consecrate yourselves to-day to the LORD,
for every man hath been against his son and against his brother; that He may
also bestow upon you a blessing this day.' 30 And it came to pass on
the morrow, that Moses said unto the people: 'Ye have sinned a great sin; and
now I will go up unto the LORD, peradventure I shall make atonement for your
sin.'
Son or perhaps grandson or
son-in-law or brother for Hur, who died opposing the Egel on Kiddush HASHEM,
was the brother-in-law of Moshe.
31 And Moses returned unto the LORD, and said: 'Oh, this
people have sinned a great sin, and have made them a god of gold.
Moshe had already pleaded for them
but it did not occur to him that the situation was so bad. Now he repleads
their case with the full knowledge of what happened.
32 Yet now, if Thou wilt forgive their sin--; and if not,
blot me, I pray Thee, out of Thy book which Thou hast written.'
This we have one full Parsha
without the name of Moshe mentioned.
33 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Whosoever hath sinned
against Me, him will I blot out of My book.
For those lucky enough to have a
Ben Yisrael Neshama or Converted their souls are special and have five sections
otherwise those who get cut off have only four sections. To earn the fifth is
much harder than being born with it. So it is more than just blotting out of a
book.
34 And now go, lead the people unto the place of which I have
spoken unto thee; behold, Mine angel shall go before thee; nevertheless in the
day when I visit, I will visit their sin upon them.'
HASHEM would not destroy them on
the spot but punishment would be dealt out on the day such as the day of the
destruction of the first and second Temple. That was the day of the calf and
the official start of the inquisition. WWI started on Tisha B'Av and WWII and the
cattle cars and gas chamber were the results.
35 And the LORD smote the people, because they made the calf,
which Aaron made.
But in stages and never destroying
all. So we see hundreds of thousands dying in each Temple destruction, Inquisition,
one third or more in the Shoah and perhaps here and there a pogrom or Jihad.
The souls are purified on a Kiddush HASHEM and reincarnated. Thus we die and reborn
cleaner from the sin of the Egel.
33:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses:
'Depart, go up hence, thou and the people that thou hast brought up out of the
land of Egypt, unto the land of which I swore unto Abraham, to Isaac, and to
Jacob, saying: Unto thy seed will I give it-- 2 and I will send an
angel before thee; and I will drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, and the
Hittite, and the Perizzite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite-- 3 unto a
land flowing with milk and honey; for I will not go up in the midst of thee;
for thou art a stiffnecked people; lest I consume thee in the
way.' 4 And when the people heard these evil tidings, they mourned;
and no man did put on him his ornaments. 5 And the LORD said unto
Moses: 'Say unto the children of Israel: Ye are a stiffnecked people; if I go
up into the midst of thee for one moment, I shall consume thee; therefore now
put off thy ornaments from thee, that I may know what to do unto
thee.' 6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their
ornaments from mount Horeb onward.
All the jewelry that the Bnei
Yisrael had they removed – perhaps married women were allowed the wedding ring
to distinguish themselves from the unmarried.
7 Now Moses used to take the tent and to pitch it without the
camp, afar off from the camp; and he called it the tent of meeting. And it came
to pass, that every one that sought the LORD went out unto the tent of meeting,
which was without the camp. 8 And it came to pass, when Moses went
out unto the Tent, that all the people rose up, and stood, every man at his
tent door, and looked after Moses, until he was gone into the
Tent. 9 And it came to pass, when Moses entered into the Tent, the
pillar of cloud descended, and stood at the door of the Tent; and [the LORD]
spoke with Moses. 10 And when all the people saw the pillar of cloud
stand at the door of the Tent, all the people rose up and worshipped, every man
at his tent door. 11 And the LORD spoke unto Moses face to face, as a
man speaks unto his friend. And he would return into the camp; but his minister
Joshua, the son of Nun, a young man, departed not out of the Tent.
Because he stuck with Moshe night
and day, he merited the Shechina.
12 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'See, Thou say unto me:
Bring up this people; and Thou hast not let me know whom Thou wilt send with
me. Yet Thou hast said: I know thee by name, and thou hast also found grace in
My sight. 13 Now therefore, I pray Thee, if I have found grace in Thy
sight, show me now Thy ways, that I may know Thee, to the end that I may find
grace in Thy sight; and consider that this nation is Thy
people.' 14 And He said: 'My presence shall go with thee, and I will
give you rest.' 15 And he said unto Him: 'If Thy presence go not with
me, carry us not up hence. 16 For wherein now shall it be known that
I have found grace in Thy sight, I and Thy people? is it not in that Thou go
with us, so that we are distinguished, I and Thy people, from all the people
that are upon the face of the earth?'
You have separated us from the
peoples of the earth and sanctified us with YOUR Commandments.
17 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'I will do this thing also
that thou hast spoken, for thou hast found grace in My sight, and I know thee
by name.' 18 And he said: 'Show me, I pray Thee, Thy
glory.' 19 And He said: 'I will make all My goodness pass before
thee, and will proclaim the name of the LORD before thee; and I will be
gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy on whom I will show
mercy.' 20 And He said: 'Thou canst not see My face, for man shall
not see Me and live.' 21 And the LORD said: 'Behold, there is a place
by Me, and thou shalt stand upon the rock. 22 And it shall come to
pass, while My glory passes by, that I will put thee in a cleft of the rock,
and will cover thee with My hand until I have passed by. 23 And I
will take away My hand, and thou shalt see My back; but My face shall not be
seen.' 34:1 And
the LORD said unto Moses: 'Hew thee two tables of stone like unto the first;
and I will write upon the tables the words that were on the first tables, which
thou didst break. 2 And be ready by the morning, and come up in the
morning unto mount Sinai, and present thyself there to Me on the top of the
mount. 3 And no man shall come up with thee, neither let any man be
seen throughout all the mount; neither let the flocks nor herds feed before
that mount.' 4 And he hewed two tables of stone like unto the first;
and Moses rose up early in the morning, and went up unto mount Sinai, as the
LORD had commanded him, and took in his hand two tables of
stone. 5 And the LORD descended in the cloud, and stood with him
there, and proclaimed the name of the LORD. 6 And the LORD passed by
before him, and proclaimed: 'The LORD, the LORD, God, merciful and gracious,
long-suffering, and abundant in goodness and truth; 7 keeping mercy
unto the thousandth generation, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin;
and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children, and upon the children's children, unto the third and
unto the fourth generation.' … 34:14 For thou shalt bow down to no
other god; for the LORD, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous
God; 15 lest thou make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land,
and they go astray after their gods, and do sacrifice unto their gods, and they
call thee, and thou eat of their sacrifice; 16 and thou take of their
daughters unto thy sons, and their daughters go astray after their gods, and
make thy sons go astray after their gods. 17 Thou shalt make thee no
molten gods. 18 The feast of unleavened bread shalt thou keep. Seven
days thou shalt eat unleavened bread, as I commanded thee, at the time
appointed in the month Abib, for in the month Abib thou came out from
Egypt. 19 All that opens the womb is Mine; and of all thy cattle thou
shalt sanctify the males, the firstlings of ox and sheep. 20 And the
firstling of an ass thou shalt redeem with a lamb; and if thou wilt not redeem
it, then thou shalt break its neck. All the first-born of thy sons thou shalt
redeem. And none shall appear before Me empty. 21 Six days thou shalt
work, but on the seventh day thou shalt rest; in plowing time and in harvest
thou shalt rest.
Again Shabbos Kodesh is a special
day without any Melacha including ones crops that farmers worry about. Yisrael
at that time was an agricultural society.
22 And thou shalt observe the feast of weeks, even
of the first-fruits of wheat harvest, and the feast of ingathering at the turn
of the year. 23 Three times in the year shall all thy males appear
before the Lord GOD, the God of Israel.
The three Regelim all males that
are able should make Aliyah Regel to the Mishkan-Mikdash and eat a Korban Chagigah
or Pesach.
24 For I will cast out nations before thee, and enlarge thy
borders; neither shall any man covet thy land, when thou go up to appear before
the LORD thy God three times in the year.
No enemy will attack you during the
time you are offering the Korban. (The condition is observance of the Mitzvos
which was not always the case.
25 Thou shalt not offer the blood of My sacrifice with
leavened bread; neither shall the sacrifice of the feast of the Passover be
left unto the morning. 26 The choicest first-fruits of thy land thou
shalt bring unto the house of the LORD thy God. Thou shalt not seethe a kid in
its mother's milk.'
The second of three times. One
forbidden to make such a mixture even not for cooking, two not to each such or
your animals and three not even to sell such a thing to a non-Jew to have profit/pleasure
from it.
27 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Write thou these
words, for after the tenor of these words I have made a covenant with thee and
with Israel.' 28 And he was there with the LORD forty days and forty
nights; he did neither eat bread, nor drink water. And he wrote upon the tables
the words of the covenant, the ten words. 29 And it came to pass,
when Moses came down from mount Sinai with the two tables of the testimony in
Moses' hand, when he came down from the mount, that Moses knew not that the
skin of his face sent forth beams while He talked with him. 30 And
when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, behold, the skin of his
face sent forth beams; and they were afraid to come nigh him. 31 And
Moses called unto them; and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation

On Mar. 8, 1945 a group of American Soldiers observed in Rheydt Germany
vanquishing a modern day Haman.
On March 8, 1945, a group of American soldiers
observed Purim in Rheydt,
Germany. The actual holiday had taken place the prior week; wartime required
flexibility. And this was a Purim none of them would forget.
It was celebrated at Joseph Goebbels' vacation home,
Schloss Rheydt, a Renaissance-era palace.
Schloss Rheydt was originally built in 1060 for a noble
family. During World War II, the town of Rheydt spent an enormous sum
renovating the castle. Swastikas and the letter “G” (for Goebbels) decorated
many rooms of the house. A huge painting of Hitler hung over a fireplace. The
citizens of Rheydt considered it crucial the castle ooze with luxury and Nazi
symbols before they gifted it to the town’s favorite son, Joseph Goebbels.
Goebbels was born in Rheydt in 1897. He joined the Nazi
Party in 1924 and became Hitler’s Minister of Propaganda in 1933. He understood
that rigidly controlled, false information combined with repetitive lies could
shape a country's mindset. Goebbels said, “Think of the press as a great
keyboard on which the government can play.” He was one of the most influential
men in the Nazi era.
Goebbels was also one of the greatest hypocrites of the
Nazi era.
He was an enthusiastic proponent of “Lebensunwertes
Leben” or “Life Unworthy of Life” which pushed for killing babies born with
disabilities. Yet Goebbels himself was born with a club foot and walked with a
limp. He was rejected for military service in World War One because of this
infirmity. Had Goebbels been born during the Nazi era, he would have been
euthanized.
Goebbels’ propaganda machine promoted the ideal Aryan image
– blond hair, blue eyes, fair skin and a tall, athletic build – an image
Goebbels himself could never live up to. In addition to his limp, Goebbels had
dark hair and eyes and swarthy, pockmarked skin. He was also very short. By his
own definition, he was an inferior creature.
His propaganda depicted Jews in the most horrifying ways,
pushing the ancient libel that Jews killed Christian children. But it was
Goebbels who was the actual murderer of Christian children. Goebbels had one
son and five daughters (each of their names began with an “H” in honor of
Hitler) and on May 1st, 1945, he and wife murdered them with cyanide before
they committed suicide.
Did Goebbels know American soldiers used his holiday villa
for Jewish celebrations that March of 1945? What would he have thought of an
ark and Torah resting on a swastika-draped table in his dining room,
celebrating the triumph of good over evil, vanquishing a modern-day Haman?
In Yank: The Army Weekly magazine, Cpl. Howard
Katzander wrote that Chaplain Manuel Poliakoff assisted by Pfc. Arnold Reich
and Cpl. Martin Willen “raised their voices in an ancient Hebrew hymn of
jubilation sung at Purim to celebrate the deliverance of the Jews from an
earlier Hitler–Haman of Persia.”
Purim was not the only holiday observed at Schloss Rheydt.
Three weeks later, hundreds of American soldiers celebrated Passover in that
same dining room. If Goebbels was aware of these celebrations,
he must have recognized the irony of Jews praying in his holiday villa.
The war was ending. Evil and hatred were not eradicated,
but they were beaten. And at Schloss Rhedyt, a celebration cast a
ray of hope in a damaged world.

Long before New York’s
La Guardia airport was built, Fiorello La Guardia, former mayor of New York,
was an American icon. What many don’t realize is that the maverick leader was
Jewish and his family’s Holocaust experience impacted his vociferous response
to Hitler.
Born in Greenwich
Village, New York, Fiorello Enrico Raeffaelo La Guardia was the son of Achille
La Guardia, a lapsed Catholic native of Cerignola, Italy, and Irene Luzzatto
Coen, a Jewish native of Trieste, then part of the Austro-Hungarian Empire.
Enrico was eventually anglicized to Henry. Fiorello is Italian for little
flower which is how the great leader was often referred.
Through his mother, La
Guardia was a descendant of Rabbi Samuel David Luzzatto, a famous Italian
leader of the Neo-Orthodoxy movement1 and a collateral
descendant of the great kabbalist Rabbi Moshe Chaim Luzzatto.2 Neither
parent practiced their religion, but a Jewish pride was instilled deep inside.
Little La Guardia was even taught to recite Shema Yisrael before
bedtime by his mother3. La Guardia’s Jewish roots would not be
widely known to the public until after he was elected Mayor of New York. No
matter what his parents practiced, Fiorello Henry La Guardia was born a Jew.
After having trouble
securing steady work in New York and then Arizona, Achille La Guardia moved the
family back to Europe. It was here that young Fiorello would get his first
taste of government, working in the US Consulate in Budapest. With higher
ambitions, the little flower left his family behind and returned to his native
New York in 1906 with an eye on politics.
After graduating from
NYU School of Law in 1910 and a failed bid for US Representative in 1914, La
Guardia was appointed Deputy Attorney General of New York in 1915. The next
year, a second congressional bid would prove successful. In 1919 he narrowly
won victory in a special election for President of the New York City Board of
Aldermen, New York City’s unicameral legislature that was active until 1937. He
resigned from Congress to take this position. In 1921 he made his first bid at
the mayorship, but lost in the Republican primary.
In 1922, he ran again
against Henry Frank, a Jew, in a bid to return to Congress in Washington. In
classical political mudslinging, Frank accused LaGuardia of being an
antisemite. La Guardia responded by dictating an open letter to the Jewish
community in Yiddish, and challenged Frank to a debate in the mama
lashon. La Guardia was fluent in Yiddish; Frank wasn’t. He declined
the invitation4. Fiorello won and returned to Congress where he
served until 1933. In 1929, he won his party’s nomination for Mayor of New
York, but was defeated in the general election5.
At this time in
American politics, the rock-solid association of Republicans as Conservatives
and Democrats as Liberals had not yet taken place. This realignment would not
happen until President Franklin Delano Roosevelt’s New Deal Coalition which
would become the dominant force of the Democratic Party until the 60s.6 The
Conservative Coalition would take the reins of the Republican Party during the
same time.7 During the realignment, many personalities moved
back and forth between and within the parties. While La Guardia was a
card-carrying Republican his whole life, he was so deeply allied with the
President that he even held a quasi-cabinet level position for some time as the
Director of the Office of Civilian Defense8. He entered congress at
the end of the Progressive Era of American politics and worked to keep the
candle burning until it was championed by President Roosevelt in 1933.9
La Guardia finally
made it to City Hall propelled as a “Fusion Candidate” with the support of
Republicans, reform minded Democrats, and Independents. He appealed to
previously underrepresented groups in New York such as Italian Catholics, Jews,
Protestants, and Backs.10 Through his three terms and 12 years
in office, La Guardia’s fingerprints are all over New York City until this day.
As an architect and champion of the New Deal, he oversaw $1.1 billion pumped
into the city. These funds led to the building of The West Side Highway, East
River Drive, Brooklyn Battery Tunnel, Triborough Bridge, both of the city’s
airports, and to major improvements in the city’s subway system.11
At the same time that
America was trying to climb out of the Great Depression, many were alarmed by
the rise of the Nazis in Germany, but few raised their voices. A noted
exception was Fiorello Henry La Guardia. The US Secretary of State at the time
of the Nazi ascent was Cordell Hull12 who, until Kristallnacht,13 tried tirelessly to reconcile the
differences between Germany and America. La Guardia was a frequent thorn in the
side. In June 1933, six months before assuming the mayorship, he was a keynote
speaker at the National Conference Against Racial Persecution in Germany. In
his speech he called Hitler “a perverted maniac” and that “part of his program
is the complete annihilation of the Jews in Germany.” He even came out in favor
of a boycott of German goods in New York.
La Guardia was first
publicly “outed” as a Jew by the Nazis just before his swearing in as Mayor.14 His
Jewish roots had not been publicly known or discussed. The Mayor-elect shrugged
off the event saying, “I never thought I had enough Jewish blood in my veins to
justify boasting about it.”15 Hans Luther, the German
Ambassador to the US, regularly visited the Secretary of State and demanded
that the “troublesome mayor” be silenced.16 The little flower
would continue to put the full weight of City Hall against the Nazis long
before most others in America were ready to do so.
La Guardia stood up to
the Nazis long before anyone else was ready to. In July 1935, a German
immigrant named Paul Kress applied for a masseur’s license in New York. Under
America’s “Treaty of Friendship” with Germany, the craftsman’s German license
should have been recognized in the US. La Guardia reduced the license.
“Treaties are based on reciprocity. It is well known that American citizens of
the Jewish faith have been discriminated against in Germany. That being the case,
I cannot see how the German Government can insist upon alleged rights contained
in the treaty on which they now rely.”
The Jewish community
saw a Mayor who was standing up for their European co-religionists—not because
they were Jews, but because it was the right thing to do. They loved him for
it, and would continue to vote for him again and again.17
When La Guardia
returned to New York as a young man, the rest of his family remained in Europe.
His sister Gemma married a Jewish man named Herman Gluck. The couple settled in
Hungary. Anti-Jewish laws predated the Nazi invasion by six years. After the
Nazi takeover in 1944, Gemma and Herman were rounded up by the Gestapo.
Eichmann and Himmler knew that Gemma was the sister of the troublesome mayor
and had the couple sent to the Mauthausen Concentration Camp
When the Germans
abandoned the camp upon the Soviet’s advance, Gemma was able to reconnect with
her daughter and grandson. Both her husband and son-in-law had been murdered.
The three had a terrible time in postwar, Soviet-controlled Berlin living as
displaced persons. Eventually, Gemma was able to get a message to La Guardia
who was now the Director General United Nations Relief and Rehabilitation
Administration (UNRRA). While he got them on the immigration list, he made it
clear that no nepotism would be used and no exceptions would be made.
That being said, he
used his knowledge of the system and did whatever a brother could do to get
them out. The family was finally united in New York in May of 1947.18 Before
Gemma’s immigration, LaGuardia had signed an affidavit that he would take care
of her and her family financially. It was not to be so.
Upon Gemma’s landing,
La Guardia was already quite sick and frail. He passed away just four months
after his sister arrived, never having the opportunity to truly take care of
her financially. She lived as an impoverished immigrant in Queens until her
passing in 1962.
Although La Guardia
stood a mere 5’2, in some ways he was larger than life. What possessed him to
leave his family behind to pursue a higher calling? Why did every minority love
him? In the messy field of politics, how did he maintain such a clean
reputation? Why did he take such a strong stand against Hitler, years before
everyone else was forced to pivot away from appeasement?
Our tradition teaches
that every Jewish soul stood at Mt. Sinai and experienced the giving of the Torah, the source of the
aforementioned characteristics that La Guardia exemplified. Even if that soul
does not have the privilege to be raised as a proud Jew with a proper Jewish
education, there still burns inside a Jewish spark that often pushes through.
Perhaps it was that Jewish spark that nurtured the little flower who became
Fiorello Henry La Guardia.
