Question on last week's Parsha. How on earth can a Jewish
religion even discuss in this day and age how to enslave people am so shocked
it is still talked of?
Answer: Not everything in Torah is
practical today and the Mishkan aka Tabernacle of the Wilderness until the
Temple was built will in the future no longer be practical. There are things
which we could not implement until the nation was educated in Torah and fear of
G-D and love of G-D reingrained in the people. If I was the head of the
Sanhedrin, I would not go around with 39 lashes for all violators of the laws
of Kashrus or kill off somewhere between 4 to 5,000,000 Jews for violating
Shabbos or the many improprieties that exist in the intimate relationships.
The Hebrew slave had the right to
run away and no Simon Lagree would chase after him. If the master had only one
pillow the Hebrew slave got it before the master.
However, we learn this. Also
neither is the Torah given valuation of a human being killed by a beast,
auto-accident, etc. so and so many shekels of silver. Each Beit Din with the
valuation thereof. Today the compensation is not what it was then.
Then institution of slavery is
forbidden and in certain places world over there exists pimps who bully and
sometimes psychologically or physically imprison women and the police fight
them.
The Geneva Convention of prisoners
does not allow us to take battle-field men and women and enslave them. As for
the Hebrew Slave sent to slavery by the Beis Din, it was more human than
today's prisons. A man who stole 100,000 NIS today would be 'enslaved' but
walking around on the Streets and having to earn back working for his master
100,000 NIS plus worker compensation. He is provided a room, clothing, food
from his master. If one was a Maumzer (product of a relationship in which the
death penalty was involved had their been witnesses) he could marry a
non-Jewish slave girl who wanted to convert and the non-Jewish Children would
not be Maumzerim. Aka what we call civil marriage or non-married relations and
the children could later convert and the mother with the blessing of Beis Din
convert one minute before her death or after menopause and live Jewishly out of
Halachic Wedlock only civil marriage.
So why do we learn about the
Mishkan, Slaves, Valuations, etc.? Not only to remember our history but to
sharpen our minds.
Lastly, certain things like
arranged marriages and the female Hebrew slave being 'sold' to marry the rich
man or his son does not exist today. In modern western society it is called
pedophilia. In Gaza 6 to 9 year old girls are still being married to Hamas soldiers.
We cannot impose western society standards upon them or the Taliban selling
young females to men my age. {Disclaimer I need an intelligent and wise woman
and not some uneducated giggling girl – nor do I plan to start a family at my
age but in Afghanistan it is a way of life.}
Parsha Terumah
Last week, we dealt with the laws
of man to man relations. Now we start weeks of man to G-D relationships.
25:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 2 'Speak unto the children of Israel, that they take for Me
an offering; of every man whose heart makes him willing ye shall take My
offering.
The modern word for donor is Torem
and that is what Moshe is asking for here a simple donation from the heart.
3 And this is the offering which ye shall take of them: gold,
and silver, and brass; 4 and blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine
linen, and goats' hair; 5 and rams' skins dyed red, and sealskins,
and acacia-wood; 6 oil for the light, spices for the anointing oil,
and for the sweet incense; 7 onyx stones, and stones to be set, for
the ephod, and for the breastplate.
In the world of Kabbalah, these
materials have high spiritual properties than iron or aluminum and their
relative rareness adds to their value. Gold, Silver and Copper have good
electronic properties that perhaps the ancients knew about if as one theorists
speculates that the Pyramids were graphite blocks in water with a gold top
making them Tesla Towers.
8 And let them make Me a sanctuary, that I may dwell among
them. 9 According to all that I show thee, the pattern of the
tabernacle, and the pattern of all the furniture thereof, even so shall ye make
it.
Moshe will be shown the pattern and
Betzalel via prophecy will make it so.
10 And they shall make an ark of acacia-wood: two cubits and
a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the breadth thereof,
and a cubit and a half the height thereof. 11 And thou shalt overlay
it with pure gold, within and without shalt thou overlay it, and shalt make
upon it a crown of gold round about.
From inside and from outside you shall
overlay it: Bezalel
made three arks, two of gold and one of wood. Each one had four walls and a
bottom, and they were open on the top. He placed the wooden one inside the
golden one and the [other] golden one inside the wooden one. He covered the
upper rim with gold, thus it is found that [the wooden one] was overlaid from
inside and from outside [with gold]. — [from Yoma 72b, Shek. 16b] A golden crown: Like a sort of crown surrounding it above its rim. For he [Bezalel]
made the outer ark higher than the inner one, until it extended upwards
opposite the thickness of the ark cover and slightly higher than it, so that
when the ark cover lies on the thickness of the walls, the crown extends
slightly over the thickness of the ark cover (Yoma 72b). And that [the crown]
is the symbol of the crown of the Torah (Tan. Vayakhel 8, Exod. Rabbah 34:2).
Acacia wood is generally a thin
tree. It is said that Yacov planted them 210 plus years prior to this.
Therefore they would be thicker and taller. Still since this is an Ark it is
unknown if the wood was of one piece length, one for width and easier one for
height.
12 And thou shalt cast four rings of gold for it, and put
them in the four feet thereof; and two rings shall be on the one side of it,
and two rings on the other side of it. 13 And thou shalt make staves
of acacia-wood, and overlay them with gold.
In my youth we had a foundry class
for pouring molten metal into a mold. To design a sand mold precisely and clamp
it together without falling apart for the molten metal to be poured in and the
ability for the gases to escape from the casting is a tremendously hard
process. It sounds easy and with gold a precious metal making it without waste
is essential.
14 And thou shalt put the staves into the rings on the sides
of the ark, wherewith to bear the ark. 15 The staves shall be in the
rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it.
They are built so as not to be
removed.
16 And thou shalt put into the ark the testimony which I
shall give thee. 17 And thou shalt make an ark-cover of pure gold:
two cubits and a half shall be the length thereof, and a cubit and a half the
breadth thereof.
The cover appears to be one piece
that is thin, wide and long enough to cover the Teva and hold the Cheruvim.
18 And thou shalt make two cherubim of gold; of beaten work
shalt thou make them, at the two ends of the ark-cover. 19 And make
one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end; of one piece with
the ark-cover shall ye make the cherubim of the two ends
thereof. 20 And the cherubim shall spread out their wings on high,
screening the ark-cover with their wings, with their faces one to another;
toward the ark-cover shall the faces of the cherubim be.
They faced each other but before
the destruction they were looking each to a different side aka one towards the
person's left the other towards the right but not towards one another.
21 And thou shalt put the ark-cover above upon the ark; and
in the ark thou shalt put the testimony that I shall give
thee. 22 And there I will meet with thee, and I will speak with thee
from above the ark-cover, from between the two cherubim which are upon the ark
of the testimony, of all things which I will give thee in commandment unto the
children of Israel.
To the Cohain Gadol on Yom Kippur.
23 And thou shalt make a table of acacia-wood: two cubits
shall be the length thereof, and a cubit the breadth thereof, and a cubit and a
half the height thereof. 24 And thou shalt overlay it with pure gold,
and make thereto a crown of gold round about. 25 And thou shalt make
unto it a border of a handbreadth round about, and thou shalt make a golden
crown to the border thereof round about. 26 And thou shalt make for
it four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that are on the
four feet thereof. 27 Close by the border shall the rings be, for
places for the staves to bear the table.
Again fine work, casting and plaiting
gold on the wood.
28 And thou shalt make the staves of acacia-wood, and
overlay them with gold, that the table may be borne with them. 29 And
thou shalt make the dishes thereof, and the pans thereof, and the jars thereof,
and the bowls thereof, wherewith to pour out; of pure gold shalt thou make
them. 30 And thou shalt set upon the table showbread before Me always.
The overlay of the gold served two
purposes the first was for beauty so that the service when viewed or the Ark
moving was in glory. The Kabbalistic reason was for the conduction and
transmission of Kedusha.
31 And thou shalt make a candlestick of pure gold: of beaten
work shall the candlestick be made, even its base, and its shaft; its cups, its
knops, and its flowers, shall be of one piece with it. 32 And there
shall be six branches going out of the sides thereof: three branches of the
candlestick out of the one side thereof, and three branches of the candle-stick
out of the other side thereof; 33 three cups made like
almond-blossoms in one branch, a knop and a flower; and three cups made like
almond-blossoms in the other branch, a knop and a flower; so for the six
branches going out of the candlestick. 34 And in the candlestick four
cups made like almond-blossoms, the knops thereof, and the flowers thereof. 35 And
a knop under two branches of one piece with it, and a knop under two branches
of one piece with it, and a knop under two branches of one piece with it, for
the six branches going out of the candlestick. 36 Their knops and their
branches shall be of one piece with it; the whole of it one beaten work of pure
gold. 37 And thou shalt make the lamps thereof, seven; and they shall
light the lamps thereof, to give light over against it.
The Temple Institute cast a single
piece 7 arm Menorah on display in Yerushalayim. One can go to duckduckgo.com to
view the golden Menorah. The casting was a very complicated thing to do with
our modern precision tools, casting methods and temperature controls. I respect
Betzalel more so for this.
38 And the tongs thereof, and the snuffdishes thereof, shall
be of pure gold.
Also cast gold for extinguishing
the old oil as new oil was added and lit and the old snuffed out.
39 Of a talent of pure gold shall it be made, with all these
vessels. 40 And see that thou make them after their pattern, which is
being shown thee in the mount.
Moshe saw them but only Betzalel
was capable of making them.
26:1 Moreover thou shalt make the tabernacle with ten curtains: of
fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, with cherubim the work of
the skillful workman shalt thou make them. 2 The length of each
curtain shall be eight and twenty cubits, and the breadth of each curtain four
cubits; all the curtains shall have one measure. 3 Five curtains
shall be coupled together one to another; and the other five curtains shall be
coupled one to another. 4 And thou shalt make loops of blue upon the
edge of the one curtain that is outmost in the first set; and likewise shalt
thou make in the edge of the curtain that is outmost in the second set. 5 Fifty
loops shalt thou make in the one curtain, and fifty loops shalt thou make in
the edge of the curtain that is in the second set; the loops shall be opposite
one to another.
The loops shall correspond to one
another: Heb. מַקְבִּילֹת הַלֻּלָאֹת. Make sure that you
make the loops exactly equidistant from one another. Their measure on this
curtain should be the same for its mate. When you spread one set [of curtains]
next to the other set, the loops of this curtain shall line up exactly opposite
the loops of the other [curtain]. This is the [meaning of the] word מַקְבִּילֹת, [i.e.,] this one opposite that one. The
Aramaic translation of נֶגֶד, opposite, is לָקֳבֵל. [Each] curtain was twenty-eight [cubits]
long and four [cubits] wide. When five curtains were joined together, it was
found that [altogether] they were twenty [cubits] wide, and so [too] with the
second set. The length of the Mishkan was thirty [cubits] from east to west, as
it is said: “twenty planks for the southern side” (verse 18), and so for the
north, [with] every plank a cubit and a half [wide]. Thus, [we have altogether]
thirty [cubits] from east to west. The width of the Mishkan from north to south
was ten cubits, as it is said: “And for the western end of the Mishkan [you
shall make six planks]” (verse 22), and [thus with] two planks at the corners
[i.e., one plank at each end of the western wall], we have ten. [I.e., the
interior of the Mishkan was ten cubits wide, not counting the northern and
southern walls, which were each one cubit thick. Hence, the remainder of the
two corner planks that do not fit against the side planks is a half cubit each,
equaling one cubit. The six planks along the western side total nine cubits,
thus we have altogether ten cubits on the western side.] In their [respective]
places, I will explain these verses. The curtains were placed [so that] their
length [was across] the [interior] width of the Mishkan, ten [of the curtains’]
middle cubits as the roof of the space of the width of the Mishkan. [Another]
cubit from here and a cubit from there covered the thickness of the tops of the
planks, whose width was a cubit thick. Thus remained sixteen cubits: eight on
the north[ern side] and eight on the south[ern side], covering the height of
the planks, which were ten [cubits] high. [Thus] the bottom two cubits were
exposed. The curtains were forty cubits wide when they were joined-twenty
cubits for each set. Thirty of them [of the forty cubits] were for the roof of
the Mishkan’s [interior] space lengthwise; one cubit corresponded to the
thickness of the ends of the planks on the [Mishkan’s] west[ern side] and one
cubit [was meant] to cover the thickness of the pillars on the east[ern
side]-for there were no planks on the [Mishkan’s] east[ern side], only four
(Old Rashi-five) pillars upon whose hooks the screen was spread and hung, like
a curtain. [Aside from the above two cubits,] there remained eight cubits that
hung in the back of the Mishkan on the west[ern side], with the bottom two cubits
uncovered. I found this in the Baraitha of Forty-Nine Middoth. However, in
Tractate Shabbat (98b) [it is stated]: The curtains did not cover the eastern
pillars, and nine cubits hung in the back of the Mishkan. The text supports us
[in our quotation of the Talmud, for the Torah states]: “And you shall place
the dividing curtain beneath the clasps” (verse 33), but if [the truth is] like
the words of this Baraitha, [it would mean that] the dividing curtain would be
found to be drawn back one cubit to the west of the clasps.
The curtains were very heavy and it
took special male and ,female weavers to put the goat hairs and rest of the
thick curtains together.
6 And thou shalt make fifty clasps of gold, and couple the
curtains one to another with the clasps, that the tabernacle may be one
whole. 7 And thou shalt make curtains of goats' hair for a tent over
the tabernacle; eleven curtains shalt thou make them.
The strings had to be patiently
woven on a living goat before being cut. I assume a feeding troth was set up
where the ladies did this.
8 The length of each curtain shall be thirty cubits, and the
breadth of each curtain four cubits; the eleven curtains shall have one
measure.
This process was very labor
intensive and used a lot of women.
9 And thou shalt
couple five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shalt
double over the sixth curtain in the forefront of the tent. 10 And
thou shalt make fifty loops on the edge of the one curtain that is outmost in
the first set, and fifty loops upon the edge of the curtain which is outmost in
the second set. 11 And thou shalt make fifty clasps of brass, and put
the clasps into the loops, and couple the tent together, that it may be
one. 12 And as for the overhanging part that remains of the curtains
of the tent, the half curtain that remains over shall hang over the back of the
tabernacle. 13 And the cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the
other side, of that which remains over in the length of the curtains of the
tent, shall hang over the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that
side, to cover it. 14 And thou shalt make a covering for the tent of
rams' skins dyed red and a covering of sealskins above. 15 And thou
shalt make the boards for the tabernacle of acacia-wood, standing up.
And you shall make the planks: It should have said, “And you shall make
planks” [without the definite article], as it is said concerning each thing
[i.e., each part of the Mishkan]. What is the meaning of "the
planks"? Of those [particular planks] that were standing [ready] and
designated for this [purpose]. Our patriarch, Jacob, planted cedars in Egypt,
and when he was dying, he commanded his sons to bring them up with them when
they left Egypt. He told them that the Holy One, blessed is He, was destined to
command them to make a Mishkan of acacia wood in the desert. "See that
they should be ready in your hands." This is what the liturgical poet
composed in his liturgical poem [the beginning of the Yotzer for the first day
of Passover]: “It [God’s voice] flew to the planting of the quickened ones, the
cedar beams of our houses,” for they hurried to have them [the cedars] ready in
their hands prior to this moment, [i.e., prior to the command to build the
Mishkan]. — [from Mid. Tanchuma 9] Acacia wood, upright: Heb. עֹמְדִים,
estantivs in Old French, upright, perpendicular. The length of the planks shall
be perpendicular [to each other] in the walls of the Mishkan. You shall not
make the walls of horizontal planks, so that the width of the planks will be
along the height of the walls, one plank [lying] upon [another] plank. — [from
Jonathan, Yoma 72a]
Rabbi Shlomo Mimran Shlita and I
have problems with this Rashi. For up until now, I was under the impression
from a poor memory of the Rashi that Acacia Trees were planted in or near
places like an old part of the Nile that crosses the modern Suez Canal or Nahal
El Arish which ever is the border promised to Am Yisrael in the future. (To
this day our Rabbis do not know exactly what the Pasuk means or if it is the modern
Suez Canal.)
Now later on we learn that the planks
holding up the Mishkan were tapered. This leaves us with a dilemma if they
carried giant trees out of Mitzrayim, the trees were at the border of the Nile
that ran north or Nahal El Arish that eases the problem for me.
There is a solution and that is
Moshe received prior to leaving Egypt the fact that they would need the planks.
He would have ordered them to make the planks and take them prior to the
leaving of Egypt. Thus they would fit in the wagons.
16 Ten cubits shall be the length of a board, and a cubit and
a half the breadth of each board.
Ten cubits [shall be] the length of each
plank: [From here] we learn [that] the height of the Mishkan was ten
cubits. — [from Shab. 92a] And a cubit and a half [shall be] the width: [From here] we learn [that] the length of
the Mishkan, [which corresponds to the] twenty planks that were on the
north[ern] and the south[ern sides] from east to west, was thirty cubits.
So if they took the boards out of Egypt
and they did not have to add much on for the new Mishkan if there was a
previous case of preparation for the table and the Aron HaKadosh or the supports
of the Mishkan.
17 Two tenons shall there be in each board, joined one to
another; thus shalt thou make for all the boards of the tabernacle. 18 And
thou shalt make the boards for the tabernacle, twenty boards for the south side
southward: 19 And thou shalt make forty sockets of silver under the
twenty boards: two sockets under one board for its two tenons, and two sockets
under another board for its two tenons; 20 and for the second side of
the tabernacle, on the north side, twenty boards. … 31 And thou
shalt make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen; with
cherubim the work of the skillful workman shall it be made. 32 And
thou shalt hang it upon four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold, their hooks
being of gold, upon four sockets of silver. 33 And thou shalt hang up
the veil under the clasps, and shalt bring in thither within the veil the ark
of the testimony; and the veil shall divide unto you between the holy place and
the most holy. 34 And thou shalt put the ark-cover upon the ark of
the testimony in the most holy place. 35 And thou shalt set the table
without the veil, and the candlestick over against the table on the side of the
tabernacle toward the south; and thou shalt put the table on the north
side. 36 And thou shalt make a screen for the door of the Tent, of
blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, the work of the weaver in
colors. 37 And thou shalt make for the screen five pillars of acacia,
and overlay them with gold; their hooks shall be of gold; and thou shalt cast
five sockets of brass for them.

deserve a good description but I am lucky since the Temple Institute has made

27:1 And thou shalt make the altar
of acacia-wood, five cubits long, and five cubits broad; the altar shall be
four-square; and the height thereof shall be three cubits. 2 And thou
shalt make the horns of it upon the four corners thereof; the horns thereof
shall be of one piece with it; and thou shalt overlay it with
brass. 3 And thou shalt make its pots to take away its ashes, and its
shovels, and its basins, and its flesh-hooks, and its fire-pans; all the
vessels thereof thou shalt make of brass. 4 And thou shalt make for
it a grating of network of brass; and upon the net shalt thou make four brazen
rings in the four corners thereof.
Cohanim who had at least one physical
defect used to work in the slaughter house and do the flaying, washing, salting
if required, etc. For although they could not do the service, they could help
out in the Mikdash.
5 And thou shalt put it under the ledge
round the altar beneath, that the net may reach halfway up the
altar. 6 And thou shalt make staves for the altar, staves of
acacia-wood, and overlay them with brass. 7 And the staves thereof
shall be put into the rings, and the staves shall be upon the two sides of the
altar, in bearing it. 8 Hollow with planks shalt thou make it; as it
hath been shown thee in the mount, so shall they make it. 9 And thou
shalt make the court of the tabernacle: for the south side southward there
shall be hangings for the court of fine twined linen a hundred cubits long for
one side. 10 And the pillars thereof shall be twenty, and their
sockets twenty, of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets shall be
of silver.
Again spiritual conductors of Kedusha
such as silver and brass.
11 And likewise for the north side in length
there shall be hangings a hundred cubits long, and the pillars thereof twenty,
and their sockets twenty, of brass; the hooks of the pillars and their fillets
of silver. 12 And for the breadth of the court on the west side shall
be hangings of fifty cubits: their pillars ten, and their sockets
ten. 13 And the breadth of the court on the east side eastward shall
be fifty cubits. 14 The hangings for the one side [of the gate] shall
be fifteen cubits: their pillars three, and their sockets three. 15 And
for the other side shall be hangings of fifteen cubits: their pillars three,
and their sockets three. 16 And for the gate of the court shall be a
screen of twenty cubits, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined
linen, the work of the weaver in colors: their pillars four, and their sockets
four.
Rare colors, rare materials with
beautiful colors on displace leading for peaceful and display and spiritual
tranquility especially when viewed with the colors of the Cohain Gadol's
garment.
17 All
the pillars of the court round about shall be filleted with silver; their hooks
of silver, and their sockets of brass. 18 The length of the court
shall be a hundred cubits, and the breadth fifty everywhere, and the height five
cubits, of fine twined linen, and their sockets of brass. 19 All the
instruments of the tabernacle in all the service thereof, and all the pins
thereof, and all the pins of the court, shall be of brass.

Who Did Whom the Favor?
Parshas Mishpatim contains the
mitzvah of lending money to a fellow Jew. Even though the Pasuk introducing this
mitzvah (Shemos 22:24) begins with the words “Im Kesef Talveh…” which is normally translated
“If you lend money…” this is one of the places in the Torah where the word “Im” does not mean “If”. It
means “When”. There is, indeed, a positive Biblical mitzvah to lend money to
your fellow Jew when he is in need.
It is not always easy to lend
money, because a person can “make money with money.” It is therefore often hard
to part with our money. I recently heard the following amazing story:
Reuven and Shimon are best friends,
as close as brothers. Reuven went to Shimon and said “Shimon, I need to borrow
$250,000. I need this money urgently. Otherwise, my business will collapse.”
Shimon hesitates. “Where am I supposed to get $250,000?”
Reuven tells Shimon, “But Shimon,
you told me just a couple of weeks ago that you finished paying off your house.
Take out a new mortgage on your house.”
Shimon hesitated, but Reuven begged
and pressed him for the loan. Shimon went home and consulted with his wife. She
advised, “Go ask the Rav.”
The Rav told him, you are not
actually obligated to do this, but if you trust the fellow then it would be a
very big mitzvah to do it. Shimon went back to his friend and said, “Okay. I
will do it.” He went to the bank and applied to take out a second mortgage on
his house. Both these Jews live in Far Rockaway, N.Y.
The bank processed the paperwork
and agreed to give Shimon a second mortgage, but they warned him that he lived
in a flood plain and would not be eligible for the loan unless he took out
flood insurance. Shimon took out flood insurance and received the mortgage. He
lent Reuven the $250,000. Three weeks later, Shimon’s house was flooded by
Hurricane Sandy… but he was covered because he took out the flood insurance.

Meir Amir's (Double) Miracle
taken from the morning show Arutz 10 now www.13tv.co.il
Amir was going up a hill in a convoy
in Lebanon. A roadside bomb went off killing 5 and injuring 12. He was left on
the road as the 6th dead man. Helicopter Rescue 669 unit had a
Medical Professor on board that day. He was told that the two bodies on the
side were dead. Suddenly, Amir jerked his arm. His face and perhaps jaw was
broken and he was not breathing. In the helicopter, the doctor preformed a
tracheotomy and working on Amir's pulse.
Amir's first memory was being in Beit
Leavenstein in rehab being washed by a nurse. Slowly, the story came to him via
others and he has met a number of times with the professor.
Before his injury, Amir loved sports
and after working 16 years in optics lost his job. His wife knew him better
than he knew himself and bought him a membership to a gym. He was walking all
the time with a cane. He gradually taught himself to move without a cane and
then starting walking and running.
Last week he did an ultra-marathon of
160km in just under 16 hours. Now if that is not a double miracle I don't know
what is!

1930s, an estimated 30 million Americans regularly tuned into Father Charles
Edward Coughlin’s controversial radio broadcasts, which promoted
antisemitic views to a loyal legion of Christian listeners. In the summer of
1939, the Canadian Roman Catholic priest called, on the airwaves, for the
creation of what would become the Christian Front, a pro-Nazi organization with
the stated aim of combating communism and promoting anti-Jewish boycotts.
In private, says Charles R. Gallagher — who conducted
extensive research parsing newly accessible intelligence files — the group had
an even more nefarious agenda. And although this would eventually lead to 17
members being put on trial for plotting an armed overthrow of the United States
government, efforts to shrug the group off as buffoons meant that few people
actually took them seriously — until now.
“The
Christian Front firmly believed that the Sovietization of America was not only
a threat against democracy and capitalism, but it would eventually exterminate
Catholicism too,” Gallagher, author of the recently published “Nazis of Copley Square: The Forgotten Story of the Christian Front,” told The Times of
Israel over a Zoom call from his home in New Hampshire.
Gallagher,
a 55-year-old Roman Catholic Jesuit priest and associate professor of history
at Boston College — whose 2008 book “Vatican Secret Diplomacy” won the John Gilmary Shea Prize from the American
Catholic Historical Association — spent a decade researching his current tome.
Much of that research period was spent carefully studying intelligence files
such as the FBI’s file for the Christian Front, which amounts to some 2,500
pages.
“Historians, before I looked at this topic, did not have
access to the FBI files,” Gallagher says. “And so they all aligned themselves
with the narrative of the Christian Front being this clownish, playful
[organization].”
“That version of the story says: There was this trial,
everybody got acquitted, and then their history gets lost because World War II
comes about,” says Gallagher. “But I wanted to show just how lethal this
organization really was.”
Gallagher’s book charts how the idea for the Christian
Front first appeared in Coughlin’s newspaper, Social Justice, in June 1938,
alongside a giant photograph of Pope Pius XI.
Coughlin envisioned the organization as a militant force
that would help in a global effort to defeat atheistic communism, which had
already infected revolutionary Russia and even Catholic countries such as Spain
and Mexico, where many Christian priests and other clergy members had been
murdered by communists for their religious beliefs.
The Christian Front was also meant to provide a strategic
counterpoise to popular fronts — grassroots groups dedicated to antifascism
that were composed of moderates, liberals and socialists in addition to
communists, and that were officially endorsed by the Seventh World Congress of
the Communist International in 1935.
Gallagher
notes how Coughlin’s extremist far-right Christian views drew heavily from two
main ideas: the age-old Christian concept of “the deicide,” which claims that
Jews bear eternal responsibility for the death of Jesus Christ; and Judeo-Bolshevism, a conspiracy theory that said communism was created as
part of a Jewish plot to destroy the nations of Europe.
Gallagher says the Catholic clergy were instrumental in
enabling the Christian Front’s growth and prosperity. Roman Catholic priests in
New York and Boston provided political and legal cover, theological leadership
and ecclesiastic approval, which they used “to rationalize and justify evil for
the far-right Christian Front movement,” the historian says.
But it was ordinary laypeople who primarily saw themselves
as the advance guard of the Christian Front in a holy war against communists
and Jews. Two figures play an important part in Gallagher’s story: John F.
Cassidy of New York and Francis P. Moran of Boston.
The heyday of the Christian Front in New York would prove
brief. The group began consolidating under Cassidy’s leadership in fall 1938.
Gallagher notes that by late 1939, extremist Christian Front members were
following in the footsteps of Adolf Hitler.
Records of a September 1939 Christian Front meeting in New
York show one member, Joe Leveque, expressing how “Christians, especially
Catholics, should exterminate the Jews just like Hitler is now doing in
Poland.”
Shortly after that meeting, the Christian Front took its
first steps toward becoming a paramilitary group.
It was a small-scale operation consisting of less than 20
individuals; nevertheless, the New York branch of the Christian Front collected
rifles and military-grade machine guns, as well as building pipe bombs, all of
which were intended for use in a seditious underground political-theological
revolution. By the winter of 1940, some of the Christian Front’s most
aggressive members were under federal indictment on charges of seditious
conspiracy and weapons theft.
The
mainstream American press gave extensive coverage to the 1940 sedition trial of Cassidy and a small group of his New York
Christian Front followers. Gallagher says their goal was unequivocal: to
install in the United States a temporary dictatorship and incite a revolution
that would eliminate Communists and Jews.
The Christian Front investigation was one of the three
largest the bureau ever undertook.
“I produce many documents in the book which show how
president [Franklin Delano] Roosevelt was also interested in monitoring the
group, and that’s what [ultimately] brought in a lot of the intelligence
activity against the Christian Front,” says the historian. Gallagher also
stresses how British intelligence “worked hard to take the Christian Front
down” and there is also “reason to believe Soviet spies tried [to do the
same].”
In 1940, when the members of the Christian Front were on
trial, Catholic leadership in the US swept the organization’s deeds under the
rug. Gallagher says Catholic media spread much the same message, distancing the
men from the Church and suggesting that they were merely crackpots, as hapless
as they were deluded. Remarkably, prosecutors also participated in this
project, the historian says.
On June 24, 1940, the jury in the sedition trial of the
Christian Front produced a verdict: Nine of the defendants were acquitted and
charges were dropped against five more, although the possibility of a retrial
remained in their cases. This came after two defendants had their charges
dismissed entirely. This meant that 16 of the 17 defendants in the trial were
found not guilty.
The final defendant did not live to see the verdict. Less
than 10 days into the trial, Claus Ernecke, who had tried to recruit a machine
gun instructor for the Christian Front’s terrorist plot, was found hanging dead
in the cellar of an apartment building two blocks from his home. Ernecke’s
lawyer claimed that his client had been kidnapped and murdered on the way to
the courthouse. There was no investigation into his death.
Following the Christian Front’s 1940 terrorist plot in New
York, the organization’s seditious activity moved to Boston. Gallagher says
it’s likely that the aforementioned Moran was officially installed as chief of
Boston’s Christian Front following Cassidy’s trial in New York.
Moran would keep the Christian Front operating in Boston
for another five years; according to the book, one Christian Front rally at the
Boston Arena on September 8, 1939, reportedly attracted a crowd of between
8,000 and 12,000.
In the Boston Globe, Moran publicly defended the Christian
Front at this time against what he called a “false allegation” of antisemitism.
But Moran’s speeches at Christian Front rallies were a little less benign.
Gallagher’s book points to a Christian Front meeting in June 1940 in Boston,
where Moran celebrated Adolf Hitler in glowing terms and encouraged “the
confiscation of Jewish property.”
Moran was
soon given some unexpected aid by a Nazi spy and SS officer named Herbert
Wilhelm Scholz, who took up duties as Germany’s consul in Boston in 1938. The
first known meeting between Scholz and Moran took place in late July 1940. They
were joined by Dr. Heribert von Strempel, a German aristocrat and first secretary of the German
Embassy in Washington.
Strempel was the chief administrator of a fund called “the
Schmiergeld,” which the Nazis used to make payments to their US agents.
Strempel’s fund began to stabilize the Christian Front’s finances and Moran
became a useful agent for Scholz in Boston. Gallagher says Moran played a vital
role in assisting Scholz with Nazi propaganda work in Boston and the wider
region.
“Having an American citizen working closely with a Nazi SS
officer to carry out Nazi policies against Jews is a very significant story,”
says Gallagher.
He says that under Scholz’s careful guidance, Moran’s
aggressive attitude and leadership style within the Christian Front changed
markedly. Moran spent the second half of 1940 “blazing from his pulpit on
behalf of Hitler,” the historian says.
Moran’s work with Scholz coincided with a period when US
politics was moving slowly in the direction of the Allies. As the challenge of
securing US neutrality became more pressing, Moran’s Nazi activism became more
vehement and more dangerous.
“Scholz was a very capable, devious spy who was able to
recruit targets, using a psychology that moved them towards Nazi lines,” says
Gallagher. “Scholz’s aim was to use the Christian Front as an operation of SS
intelligence, and he was pretty successful at doing that.”
“Scholz moved Moran from a man who was pretty [ambivalent
in his attitudes to] racial antisemitism, into a [committed] Hitlerite who
began to believe in Nazi racial ideas about extermination,” Gallagher adds.
“And in accomplishing that, Scholz also moved [the Christian Front] in that
same direction.”
It was at this point that the Christian Front morphed “from
a religious organization into a Nazi-controlled political [organization],” says
Gallagher. He also notes how, in supporting the Christian Front, ordinary Roman
Catholics in Boston were unconsciously aiding a state with which their own
state would soon be at war.
On June 16, 1941, Roosevelt ordered the closure of all
German consulates in the US. Moran, meanwhile, spent the rest of 1941 working
with Germans in Boston, castigating Jews and calling on his clerical supporters
to preach the gospel of antisemitism.
That same
month, in downtown Boston, the Christian Front put on a private screening of “Sieg im Westen” (“Victory in the
West”), a German propaganda film that portrayed the expanding Third Reich in
noble terms, and which also compared Jews to rats. During the showing of the
film, Moran spoke several times, emphasizing the hopelessness of a US army
fighting a mechanized Nazi army. Word of this Nazi propaganda screening made it
as far as Berlin, where the chief propagandist for the Nazi Party, Joseph
Goebbels, and his Nazi comrades privately noted how the film had been shown to
an enthusiastic American audience.
On October 20, 1941, at another packed meeting of the
Christian Front, Moran described the Jews as a “hindrance and a source of evil
to any country that held them.”
It was under these circumstances that antisemitism in
Boston began to rise. Gallagher says the “anti-Jewish violence in Boston
became pervasive in 1943.” The violence was perpetrated largely by Irish
Catholic gangs, some of whom were former Christian Front members. Gallagher
says the Boston Police abetted crimes against Jews by turning a blind eye,
arresting Jewish Bostonians, and sometimes even directly joining in and
participating in the beatings of Jews.
By the end of 1943, the violence came to an end in Boston.
Over time, so too did Moran’s career and the Christian Front, disappearing from
both daily life and historical memory. The hero of Gallagher’s book, Frances
Sweeney, was a key figure in bringing Moran and the Christian Front down.
Another Irish Catholic from Boston, Sweeney — a journalist
and activist — was well connected among Boston’s liberal intelligentsia and had
solid contacts in the news business. This led her to contest Moran’s
antisemitism and expose his work as a Nazi propagandist, which continued even
after Germany and the United States had declared war on each other.
Sweeney launched a crusade against Moran in the Boston
press that led local police to demand that Moran disband his organization,
forcing him to retreat from public life.
Recalling a conversation he had as a young academic with
his then-professor, Gallagher says he asked if he could write a research
paper on the Christian Front.
“He told me there’s nothing there — they were a farce, they
never amounted to anything or did anything, and it’s not even worthy of a
research paper,” says Gallagher with a smile, indicating that all his years
spent quietly researching has been worth the wait.
“But I like to look at those anomalies in history and to
see if there is anything more meaningful there,” he says.
