Review of Parsha Matos, Parsha Massei, stories, news

Unfortunately, there is a new name to pray for. He is the son of a man who had the disease at an older age. Yisrael Ben Dovid Ben Drorah Rivka.

Review of Parsha Matos

The Parsha starts off with women making vows and how a wise father or husband can cancel them. Last week, http://rabbipauli.blogspot.com/2022/07/review-of-parsha-pinchas-parsha-matos.html I gave reasons why a father would nullify a vow of a girl under 12years and one day. Or a husband might want to nullify a vow of a wife.

This comes from Rabbi Pinchas Winston thirtysix.org The word fadicha is an Arabic word that has made its way into the Hebrew lexicon. It is used to refer to a slip-up that verges on the pathetic. Then there is the word fashla, also from Arabic. It means that something was a disaster, and while fadicha may have a humorous connotation, there is usually nothing funny about a fashla.

Bringing back the Midianite women as spoils of war may have seemed like a fadicha, but Moshe’s reaction to it quickly made it into a fashla, a HUGE fashla:

Moshe said to them, “Did you allow all the females to live? They were the same ones who were involved with the children of Israel on Bilaam’s advice to betray God over the incident of Peor, resulting in a plague among the congregation of God. (Bamidbar 31:15-16)

There was an accounting of spoils and the Leviim and Cohanim received Terumah and Maaser. There was also the giving of charity from the spoils and the Mishkan received of the gold and silver.

The girls that had not known men were integrated into Am Yisrael and all of us have in our genes some blood from Midian by this time.

Parsha Massei

This week the Parshiyos being joined together reconnect the diaspora with Eretz Yisrael. WHENEVER THERE WILL BE A SANHEDRIN, I WILL DEMAND THAT FOR THE FUTURE AHAREI MOS – KIDDUSHIM SHOULD BE JOINED TOGETHER OR BEHAR-BECHUKOSAI DEPENDING ON THE YEAR. (Hopefully, in my life time and of course ble Neder as I know not if or when this will occur or how long I shall live.)

The tribes of Reuven, Gad and the children of Machir from Menashe are settling into their new lands. The main portion of Am Yisrael are on the east bank of the Yarden awaiting orders to march towards and conquer Yericho.

33:1 These are the stages of the children of Israel, by which they went forth out of the land of Egypt by their hosts under the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 And Moses wrote their goings forth, stage by stage, by the commandment of the LORD; and these are their stages at their goings forth. 3 And they journeyed from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of the first month; on the morrow after the Passover the children of Israel went out with a high hand in the sight of all the Egyptians,

They were armed and carried jewelry of Egypt, gold, silver and copper for G-D whatever HE might ask.

4 while the Egyptians were burying them that the LORD had smitten among them, even all their first-born; upon their gods also the LORD executed judgments.

The average Egyptian was busy burying a first born either of his own or a close family member.

5 And the children of Israel journeyed from Rameses, and pitched in Succoth. 6 And they journeyed from Succoth, and pitched in Etham, which is in the edge of the wilderness. 7 And they journeyed from Etham, and turned back unto Pihahiroth, which is before Baal-zephon; and they pitched before Migdol.

42 stops in 39plus years.

…36 And they journeyed from Ezion-geber, and pitched in the wilderness of Zin--the same is Kadesh. 37 And they journeyed from Kadesh, and pitched in mount Hor, in the edge of the land of Edom.—

All this in the last year.

38 And Aaron the priest went up into mount Hor at the commandment of the LORD, and died there, in the fortieth year after the children of Israel were come out of the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on the first day of the month. 39 And Aaron was a hundred and twenty and three years old when he died in mount Hor.  40 And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel.-- 41 And they journeyed from mount Hor, and pitched in Zalmonah. 42 And they journeyed from Zalmonah, and pitched in Punon. 43 And they journeyed from Punon, and pitched in Oboth. 44 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched in Ije-abarim, in the border of Moab. 45 And they journeyed from Ijim, and pitched in Dibon-gad. 46 And they journeyed from Dibon-gad, and pitched in Almon-diblathaim. 47 And they journeyed from Almon-diblathaim, and pitched in the mountains of Abarim, in front of Nebo. 48 And they journeyed from the mountains of Abarim, and pitched in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 49 And they pitched by the Jordan, from Beth-jeshimoth even unto Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab.

So, they were on the other side of the river opposite Yarden. 42 steps on the way to Eretz Yisrael.

50 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying: 51 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 52 then ye shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you, and destroy all their figured stones, and destroy all their molten images, and demolish all their high places. 53 And ye shall drive out the inhabitants of the land, and dwell therein; for unto you have I given the land to possess it. 54 And ye shall inherit the land by lot according to your families--to the more ye shall give the more inheritance, and to the fewer thou shalt give the less inheritance; wheresoever the lot falls to any man, that shall be his; according to the tribes of your fathers shall ye inherit.

The inhabitants of the land shall be driven out.

55 But if ye will not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, then shall those that ye let remain of them be as thorns in your eyes, and as pricks in your sides, and they shall harass you in the land wherein ye dwell. 56 And it shall come to pass, that as I thought to do unto them, so will I do unto you.

Once upon a time some 55 years ago, there was a pork eating Defense Minister. He thought the feeling population would make good workers for his non-religious Kibbutz Friends. The results are still felt today with orphans, widows, widowers etc. from the wonder workers that did not flee. As for the children of the Defense Minister they died young except for a daughter who violated Yom Kippur in Public. One even by suicide.

34:1  And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Command the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land of Canaan, this shall be the land that shall fall unto you for an inheritance, even the land of Canaan according to the borders thereof. 3 Thus your south side shall be from the wilderness of Zin close by the side of Edom, and your south border shall begin at the end of the Salt Sea eastward; 4 and your border shall turn about southward of the ascent of Akrabbim, and pass along to Zin; and the goings out thereof shall be southward of Kadesh-Barnea; and it shall go forth to Hazar-addar, and pass along to Azmon;

With the exception of not having the eastern side of the Dead Sea, that is basically our borders today but down to Eilat.

5 and the border shall turn about from Azmon unto the Brook of Egypt, and the goings out thereof shall be at the Sea. 6 And for the western border, ye shall have the Great Sea for a border; this shall be your west border. 7 And this shall be your north border: from the Great Sea ye shall mark out your line unto mount Hor;

The understanding that this is a mountain on the Turkish Lebanese Border today.

8 from mount Hor ye shall mark out a line unto the entrance to Hamath; and the goings out of the border shall be at Zedad;

This is in northern Syria and the place where the spies went to. It is a bit below the Euphrates River but that is for the end of days.

9 and the border shall go forth to Ziphron, and the goings out thereof shall be at Hazar-enan; this shall be your north border. 10 And ye shall mark out your line for the east border from Hazar-enan to Shepham; 11 and the border shall go down from Shepham to Riblah, on the east side of Ain; and the border shall go down, and shall strike upon the slope of the sea of Chinnereth eastward;

Probably the mountain pass border at Hamat Gader where the Yamuck River starts.

12 and the border shall go down to the Jordan, and the goings out thereof shall be at the Salt Sea; this shall be your land according to the borders thereof round about.' 13 And Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying: 'This is the land wherein ye shall receive inheritance by lot, which the LORD hath commanded to give unto the nine tribes, and to the half-tribe; 14 for the tribe of the children of Reuben according to their fathers' houses, and the tribe of the children of Gad according to their fathers' houses, have received, and the half-tribe of Manasseh have received, their inheritance;

They were happy with their inheritance.

15 the two tribes and the half-tribe have received their inheritance beyond the Jordan at Jericho eastward, toward the sun-rising.'

From the Golan Heights towards Damascus inwards and the eastern side of the Jordan River below the mountains.

16 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 17 'These are the names of the men that shall take possession of the land for you: Eleazar the priest, and Joshua the son of Nun. 18 And ye shall take one prince of every tribe, to take possession of the land. 19 And these are the names of the men: of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Jephunneh. 20 And of the tribe of the children of Simeon, Shemuel the son of Ammihud. 21 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Elidad the son of Chislon. 22 And of the tribe of the children of Dan a prince, Bukki the son of Jogli. 23 Of the children of Joseph: of the tribe of the children of Manasseh a prince, Hanniel the son of Ephod; 24 and of the tribe of the children of Ephraim a prince, Kemuel the son of Shiphtan. 25 And of the tribe of the children of Zebulun a prince, Eli-zaphan the son of Parnach. 26 And of the tribe of the children of Issachar a prince, Paltiel the son of Azzan. 27 And of the tribe of the children of Asher a prince, Ahihud the son of Shelomi. 28 And of the tribe of the children of Naphtali a prince, Pedahel the son of Ammihud. 29 These are they whom the LORD commanded to divide the inheritance unto the children of Israel in the land of Canaan.'

These men would be the leaders conquering the land. Yehoshua Bin Nun would be the King and Commander-in-Chief.

35:1  And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying: 2 'Command the children of Israel, that they give unto the Levites of the inheritance of their possession cities to dwell in; and open land round about the cities shall ye give unto the Levites. 3 And the cities shall they have to dwell in; and their open land shall be for their cattle, and for their substance, and for all their beasts. 4 And the open land about the cities, which ye shall give unto the Levites, shall be from the wall of the city and outward a thousand cubits round about. 5 And ye shall measure without the city for the east side two thousand cubits, and for the south side two thousand cubits, and for the west side two thousand cubits, and for the north side two thousand cubits, the city being in the midst. This shall be to them the open land about the cities.

This is our source of 2000 Amos from the City as Techum Shabbos.

6 And the cities which ye shall give unto the Levites, they shall be the six cities of refuge, which ye shall give for the manslayer to flee thither; and beside them ye shall give forty and two cities. 7 All the cities which ye shall give to the Levites shall be forty and eight cities: them shall ye give with the open land about them. 8 And concerning the cities which ye shall give of the possession of the children of Israel, from the many ye shall take many, and from the few ye shall take few; each tribe according to its inheritance which it inherits shall give of its cities unto the Levites.'

Three cities in Reuven, Gad and half Menashe and three cities on the western side.

9 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 10 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye pass over the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11 then ye shall appoint you cities to be cities of refuge for you, that the manslayer that kills any person through error may flee thither.

Accidental homicide or manslaughter.

12 And the cities shall be unto you for refuge from the avenger, that the manslayer die not, until he stand before the congregation for judgment. 13 And as to the cities which ye shall give, there shall be for you six cities of refuge. 14 Ye shall give three cities beyond the Jordan, and three cities shall ye give in the land of Canaan; they shall be cities of refuge. 15 For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and for the settler among them, shall these six cities be for refuge, that every one that kills any person through error may flee thither. 16 But if he smote him with an instrument of iron, so that he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

The Torah distinguishes between accident, negligent and homicide. Only the former case one flees. However, if he saw that the ax handle was insecure and he used the ax that the blade flew off the handle and killed that would be negligence.

17 And if he smote him with a stone in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death. 18 Or if he smote him with a weapon of wood in the hand, whereby a man may die, and he died, he is a murderer; the murderer shall surely be put to death.

If there are two witnesses that it is murder then he is put to death. If not the avenger of blood can do so.

19 The avenger of blood shall himself put the murderer to death; when he meets him, he shall put him to death. 20 And if he thrust him of hatred, or hurled at him anything, lying in wait, so that he died; 21 or in enmity smote him with his hand, that he died; he that smote him shall surely be put to death: he is a murderer; the avenger of blood shall put the murderer to death when he meets him. 22 But if he thrust him suddenly without enmity, or hurled upon him anything without lying in wait, 23 or with any stone, whereby a man may die, seeing him not, and cast it upon him, so that he died, and he was not his enemy, neither sought his harm; 24 then the congregation shall judge between the smiter and the avenger of blood according to these ordinances; … 27 and the avenger of blood find him without the border of his city of refuge, and the avenger of blood slay the manslayer; there shall be no bloodguiltiness for him; 28 because he must remain in his city of refuge until the death of the high priest; but after the death of the high priest the manslayer may return into the land of his possession.

He is protected from the avenger of  blood and shall walk around free in the city of refugee. It is a sort of ‘house arrest’ for accidental manslaughter.

36:1 And the heads of the fathers' houses of the family of the children of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near, and spoke before Moses, and before the princes, the heads of the fathers' houses of the children of Israel; 2 and they said: 'The LORD commanded my lord to give the land for inheritance by lot to the children of Israel; and my lord was commanded by the LORD to give the inheritance of Zelaphad our brother unto his daughters. 3 And if they be married to any of the sons of the other tribes of the children of Israel, then will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of our fathers, and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong; so will it be taken away from the lot of our inheritance.

The daughters had to marry a man in their tribe as they had to live in the Machir section of Menashe. Aka distant cousins from their forefathers.

4 And when the jubilee of the children of Israel shall be, then will their inheritance be added unto the inheritance of the tribe whereunto they shall belong; so will their inheritance be taken away from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.' … 8 And every daughter, that possesses an inheritance in any tribe of the children of Israel, shall be wife unto one of the family of the tribe of her father, that the children of Israel may possess every man the inheritance of his fathers.

Because of her land, she had to marry somebody who could inherit that portion and not from Levi or another tribe.

9 So shall no inheritance remove from one tribe to another tribe; for the tribes of the children of Israel shall cleave each one to its own inheritance.' 10 Even as the LORD commanded Moses, so did the daughters of Zelaphad. 11 For Mahlah, Tirzah, and Hoglah, and Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelaphad, were married unto their father's brothers' sons. 12 They were married into the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance remained in the tribe of the family of their father. 13 These are the commandments and the ordinances, which the LORD commanded by the hand of Moses unto the children of Israel in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho.

The Fanatics vs. Rabbi Moshe Feinstein’s Heter. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/357133

Saying the Shema after Aleinu came from the Kaliver Rebbe. Rabbi Aryel Nachman ben Chaim told me the life story of the Kaliver Rebbe. The Rabbi asked me to compose a tribute to him. Thus, I've written & recorded a composition for this towering Jewish figure who left this world. His name was Rabbi Menachem Mendel Taub, the master ‘Admor’ of the Hasidic dynasty of Kaliv, known to many as the Kaliver Rebbe. With a noticeable lack of beard that set him apart from other senior Hasidic leaders, the Kaliver Rebbe’s appearance was not by a choice; he was a victim of chemical burning experiments carried out on his skin by the notorious Joseph Mengele at Auschwitz.

Pulled aside to be one of Mengele’s human guinea pigs, his experience at the hands of the so-called ‘medical team’ at the concentration camp where 1.1 million Jews were murdered, not only prevented him from growing a beard, he was also left unable to father children. Despite the suffering he endured, he refused to let go of the dream of continuing his family’s legacy and saw it his fate to survive. After being transferred late 1944 from Auschwitz to the Warsaw Ghetto and then on to the Breslau concentration camp, he was marched to Bergen-Belsen where he was liberated in April 1945. Here is the link to this very heartfelt composition: https://rdruttenberg.bandcamp.com/track/kaliver ---Thanks to Helene W.

The Second Slap by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1285-47

The sound of a slap was heard in the shul (synagogue). Everyone present turned around and were astonished to see that the person administering the slap was no other than Rabbi Lipa, the Rav of Shargorod, in Ukraine. For a moment silence reigned but soon people returned to their prayers.

Rabbi Lipa's studiousness was exceptional. He hardly took time to sleep. While studying Torah he disengaged himself entirely from his surroundings to the extent that he was completely unaware of the passing of time. One of the duties of his elderly shammes (attendant) was to remind Rabbi Lipa when it was time for prayers.

Time passed and the old attendant passed away. The leaders of the community looked for a suitable candidate to take his place. Eventually they chose a young man who had decided not to continue his intensive studies. They hoped that being in close contact with the Rav would influence him spiritually for the better.

The rather irresponsible young man wasn't impressed with his new duties. He even used his situation negatively and often caused the Rav distress. All this time the Rav kept this to himself; he said nothing to the people who had appointed him.

One night the young man sat with his friends till early morning. Concerned that if he would go to bed he would not get up in time to remind the Rav that it was time for morning prayers, he decided to lie down on a bench in the shul, hoping that the arrival of the first worshippers would wake him.

He slept so deeply, however, that the entrance of the early comers didn't wake him, not even when the prayers began. The community had waited for a long time for the Rav to join them but when he didn't come they started the prayers without him.

Only in the middle of the prayers did the gabbai (manager of the synagogue) notice the sleeping young man. He immediately realized the reason for the absence of R. Lipa. He quickly awakened the young man and sent him to call the Rav.

The young man came to the Rav as usual and said nothing about the delay. The Rav leisurely made his way to shul, but on his entrance realized that the community was about to finish praying. This angered him greatly and he slapped the young man on the cheek in front of all the worshippers.

The young man accepted the slap with understanding and the people present also felt that it was deserved. But the Rav was terribly upset. His conscience troubled him - how could he have hurt another Jew! His prayer that morning was like the concluding prayer of Ne'ilah on Yom Kippur, his tears flowed from his eyes like water.

Immediately after the prayers, the Rav ascended the bimah (platform in the synagogue for the Torah Reading) and announced emotionally: "I deeply and sincerely regret the slap I gave the young man, and I beg him for pardon and forgiveness."

Right away the young man stood up and exclaimed: "Honorable Rabbi, I deserved that slap, already for a long time I had it coming due to all the distress I caused you."

Several days went by when suddenly it became known in town that the Rav left on a long journey, without stating when he would return. The Rosh Yeshiva (head of the yeshiva) was appointed as his substitute. Only to the members of his family the Rav revealed that he decided to take upon himself a period of exile [not so rare in those days - Y.T.] as penance for slapping the young man in public. He would continue until he received a sign from Heaven that his repentance was accepted.

The Rav exchanged his clothes for the clothes of a simple wayfarer and wandered from town to town. There were times that he would have no food for a long time and times that he found no place to lie down and rest. Often, he was jeered at, but he accepted it all with love.

Years passed and he felt his strength weaken, he realized that he would not be able to continue his wanderings but he still awaited a sign from Heaven. One Shabbat eve he came to a town close to Shargorod. He decided to approach the person in charge of the Guest House for help in finding a house where to eat his Shabbat meals.

When he stood in front of the man responsible for the Guest House he was dumbfounded to realize that this was the same young man who was his servant all those years ago. He had married, raised a family and moved to this town. The man didn't recognize the Rav and the latter didn't say anything. He was sent to eat in the house of the head of the community.

From the conversation during the Shabbat evening meal the host discovered that his guest was an outstanding Torah scholar. The community leader was extremely pleased and invited the Rav to stay and sleep in his house. At the end of Shabbat after Havdala (ceremony at the termination of Shabbat) the Rav took leave of the household members and got ready to continue his journey.

In the meantime, a tumult broke out in the shul: the valuable silver candle sticks had disappeared. Suspicion fell immediately on the guest, who had hurried to leave the house of his host. The community leader ran to the Guest House supervisor and furiously asked him, "How did you sent me a guest who is nothing but a thief!?"

The supervisor decided to discover the whereabouts of the thief. He took his carriage and set out to find the guest, who hadn't managed to cover much distance. By the time he overtook him he was so incensed that he slapped the Rav on his cheek then ordered him to return the stolen candles.

To his surprise, he saw a big smile appear on the face of the guest. This angered the supervisor even more and he raised his hand in order to slap the guest again.

The Rav raised his hand and said "Enough! I deserved one slap but not more than that."

This remark sounded very strange to the supervisor. Looking searchingly at the man in front of him he suddenly yelled "Oy! Rebbe!" realizing that this was none other than the Rav of Shargorod, Rabbi Lipa!

He threw himself down before the Rav, begging him for forgiveness. Again, a big smile spread over the Rav's face. He said "You do not have to feel bad. Finally, I have received a sign from Heaven that my repentance has been accepted."

Street posters in Charedi communities in Israel warn that the Internet drives the Shechina from the home. Haredi Rabbis only permit the use of “kosher” cellphones which don’t allow a user to connect with the unfettered expanses of cyberspace.

But as the saying goes: where there's a will, there's a way. A casual stroll through the city reveals that Charedi youth frequent Internet cafes as much a secular Jews. In the Dati-Leumi community which encourages active participation in all areas of Israel’s rebuilding, the use of home computers and smartphones is as prevalent as (lehavdil) tefillin.  That was the introduction parents should read on.

Summer Astronomy fans: Arcturus dominates the high western sky after dark. Spot the Big Dipper off to its right, in the northwest.

In astronomy lore today, Arcturus may be best known for its cosmic history: It's a Population II orange giant some 7 billion years old, older than the solar system, racing by our part of space on a trajectory that indicates it came from another galaxy: a dwarf galaxy that fell into the Milky Way and merged with it.

But in the astronomy books of our grandparents, Arcturus had a different claim to fame: It turned on the lights of the 1933 World's Fair in Chicago, celebrating "a century of progress." Astronomers rigged the newly invented photocell to the eye end of big telescopes around the US and aimed the scopes where Arcturus would pass at the correct moment on opening night. In places where the sky was clear the star's light crept onto the photocells, the weak signals were amplified and sent over telegraph wires to Chicago, a switch was tripped, and on blazed the massive lights to the cheers of tens of thousands.

Why Arcturus? Astronomers of the time thought it was 40 light-years away (modern value: 36.7 ±0.2 light-years). So, the light would have been in flight since the previous such great event in Chicago, the World's Columbian Exhibition in 1893.

And earlier? Arcturus was known as the first of the familiar nighttime stars to be seen in the daytime with a telescope: by Jean-Baptiste Morin in 1635.
