I received this in the mail. Although I am not a Chassid, I
thought it would be nice to publish. For Israel is about to go through another
costly election process and we may remain divided. We need more Mitzvos.
On the 28th anniversary of his passing (Shabbat, July 1-2),
let's celebrate the Rebbe's vision. Let's honor his life's mission to bring
goodness and kindness into this world. Let's do one more mitzvah, one more
good deed, to make this world a better place.
For the Diaspora Parsha Korach
After the gluttony of the meals and
the power continuation of the spies. You would think that the people would stop
rebelling against Moshe and Aaron. But no, the ultrawealthy Korach is not
satisfied with being a Levi and one of the richest men in Yisrael. No, he
wanted leadership. From son after son, his father was older than Moshe’s
father. So he wanted according to his reason the Kahuna and a socialist idea of
all the Nation is holy. However, THE KING OF KINGS did not bless socialism.
Moshe tried to reason with him and
the Bnei Reuven that were rebelling looked at distain at the third born Levi or
Kingship at the 4th born Yehuda and they did not want to even listen
or come before Moshe.
HASHEM makes a new form of death –
the earth swallowing them alive. There is more of a rebellion and 14,000 die by
the plague.
HASHEM decides to end the
rebellions once and for all and every prince brings his staff into the Ark.
Aaron’s sprouts flowers and almonds and this shows that he was chosen by G-D.
Parsha Chukkas
As for death and
atonement/purification by the Red Heifer, it could have been given anytime but
for sure after this, 38 years fly by and Miriam, Aaron and Moshe are
exceedingly old.
19.1 And the LORD
spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 This is the statute of the
law which the LORD hath commanded, saying: Speak unto the children of Israel,
that they bring thee a red heifer, faultless, wherein is no blemish, and upon
which never came yoke.
All hairs have to be red and not two black hairs.
3 And ye shall give her unto Eleazar the
priest, and she shall be brought forth without the camp, and she shall be slain
before his face.
Because Aaron is not mentioned perhaps this was
given after Rosh Chodesh Menachem Av 2487, the day of his death? Or perhaps
this was while he was alive as the Cohain dealing with the Parah Aduma becomes
Tumay and the Cohain Gadol during his tenure should not become Tumay.
4 And Eleazar the priest shall take of her
blood with his finger, and sprinkle of her blood toward the front of the tent
of meeting seven times.
Towards but does not say on.
Rashi: Toward the front of the Tent of Meeting: [In later generations, when this rite will be performed outside
the Temple in Jerusalem,] he is to stand to the east of Jerusalem and to direct
his gaze toward the entrance to the Temple while sprinkling the blood. —
[Sifrei Chukkas 14]
5 And the heifer shall be burnt in his
sight; her skin, and her flesh, and her blood, with her dung, shall be
burnt.
Everything is burnt completely except the
sprinkled blood.
6 And the priest shall take cedar-wood, and
hyssop, and scarlet, and cast it into the midst of the burning of the
heifer.
Wood, Marjoram and scarlet thread is thrown on
the fire by the Cohain.
7 Then the priest shall wash his clothes,
and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp,
and the priest shall be unclean until the even.
Enter the camp: The camp of the Divine
Presence, because no ritually unclean person is banished from two camps, except
one who experienced a flow, one who experienced a seminal emission, or one
afflicted with tzaraas. [Hence, he is admitted to the one camp from which he
was banished.] - [Pes. 67a] And the kohen shall be
unclean until evening: Transpose it [the verse]
and explain it [thus]: He shall be unclean until evening, and then he may enter
the camp.
8 And he that burns her shall wash his
clothes in water, and bathe his flesh in water, and shall be unclean until the
even.
He has to bathe in a Mikvah and wash his
clothing.
9 And a man that is clean shall gather up
the ashes of the heifer, and lay them up without the camp in a clean place, and
it shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for a water of
sprinkling; it is a purification from sin.
He is clean and processes the ashes but he
becomes temporally ritually impure.
10 And he that gathers the ashes of the
heifer shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; and it shall be
unto the children of Israel, and unto the stranger that sojourns among them,
for a statute forever.
This is one of the mysteries of G-D the impure
become pure and the pure become temporally impure.
11 He that touches the dead, even any man's
dead body, shall be unclean seven days; 12 the same shall purify
himself therewith on the third day and on the seventh day, and he shall be
clean; but if he doesn’t purify himself the third day and the seventh day, he
shall not be clean.
He/she has to bathe in living water mikveh such
as a spring or mikveh on the side of a river on the 3rd and 7th
day and some sprinkles of ashes are there.
13 Whosoever touches the dead, even the body
of any man that is dead, and purifies not himself--he has defiled the
tabernacle of the LORD--that soul shall be cut off from Israel; because the
water of sprinkling was not dashed against him, he shall be unclean; his
uncleanness is yet upon him.
However, if the Moshiach would come within 7 days
of Pesach and tell us to make a Korban we could do so and let pure Cohanim take
care of the Korban.
14 This is the law: when a man dies in a
tent, every one that comes into the tent, and everything that is in the tent,
shall be unclean seven days.
The Rabbis use this to tell us that if one wants
to became a Chacham he must learn until he drops like a dead man. Oy, how many
times I have fallen asleep at the computer listening to the Daf Yomi and
writing my Drasha. Of course, the Pshat is as stated in the Pasuk and one becomes
unclean 7 days.
15 And every open vessel, which hath no covering
close-bound upon it, is unclean.
Any open vessel in the area where the body is
under a roof has been overshadowed by Tuma of a Meys (corpse uncleanliness).
16 And whosoever in the open field touches
one that is slain with a sword, or one that dies of himself, or a bone of a
man, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. 17 And for the unclean
they shall take of the ashes of the burning of the purification from sin, and
running water shall be put thereto in a vessel. 18 And a clean person
shall take hyssop, and dip it in the water, and sprinkle it upon the tent, and
upon all the vessels, and upon the persons that were there, and upon him that
touched the bone, or the slain, or the dead, or the grave. 19 And the
clean person shall sprinkle upon the unclean on the third day, and on the
seventh day; and on the seventh day he shall purify him; and he shall wash his
clothes, and bathe himself in water, and shall be clean at even.
The fact that a body, bone or body part (such as
in a terror attack not upon us) is outside one still because Tumay if he
touches it, or he/she overshadows it.
20 But the man that shall be unclean, and
shall not purify himself, that soul shall be cut off from the midst of the
assembly, because he hath defiled the sanctuary of the LORD; the water of
sprinkling hath not been dashed against him: he is unclean.
A person that can purify himself must do so. In
any event, he/she cannot be in the assembly until undergoing purification as
mentioned above.
21 And it shall be a perpetual statute unto
them; and he that sprinkles the water of sprinkling shall wash his clothes; and
he that touches the water of sprinkling shall be unclean until
even. 22 And whatsoever the unclean person touches shall be unclean;
and the soul that touches him shall be unclean until even. 20:1 And the children of Israel, even the whole
congregation, came into the wilderness of Zin in the first month; and the
people abode in Kadesh; and Miriam died there, and was buried there.
Today this is close or on the border of the modern Egypt south of
Sde Boker. It is a flat plain desert area but one can did water in wells and
Bedouin graze their flocks and herds there today.
2 And there was no water for the congregation; and they
assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron.
From here comes the legend of Miriam’s well that moved with her in
the desert until she died.
3 And the people strove with Moses, and spoke, saying: 'Would
that we had perished when our brethren perished before the
LORD! 4 And why have ye brought the assembly of the LORD into this
wilderness, to die there, we and our cattle? 5 And wherefore have ye
made us to come up out of Egypt, to bring us in unto this evil place? it is no
place of seed, or of figs, or of vines, or of pomegranates; neither is there
any water to drink.'
I am sitting back judging these complainers after I had a few cups
of coffee today. I wonder how I would have been with my faith if I was that thirsty
– generation of miracles or not. The second half of the story is the people
telling Moshe that he was a great politician promising things but not
delivering on his promises. They did not look at their generation or the
previous complainers in the mirror.
6 And Moses and Aaron went from the presence of the assembly
unto the door of the tent of meeting, and fell upon their faces; and the glory
of the LORD appeared unto them.
Another rebellion but this time because of lack of water. They did
not put their faith on miracles and Chashgacha.
7 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 8 'Take
the rod, and assemble the congregation, thou, and Aaron thy brother, and speak
ye unto the rock before their eyes, that it give forth its water; and thou
shalt bring forth to them water out of the rock; so thou shalt give the
congregation and their cattle drink.'
Unlike the previous case 39 years ago, this time he would only
have to speak to the rock.
9 And Moses took the rod from before the LORD, as He
commanded him. 10 And Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together
before the rock, and he said unto them: 'Hear now, ye rebels; are we to bring
you forth water out of this rock?' 11 And Moses lifted up his hand,
and smote the rock with his rod twice; and water came forth abundantly, and the
congregation drank, and their cattle.
Instead of talking to the rock and perhaps coaxing it (as the
Medrash says it started to trickle and he should have spoken more – the heat of
the passion of the people got him to hit the rock).
12 And the LORD said unto Moses and Aaron: 'Because ye
believed not in Me, to sanctify Me in the eyes of the children of Israel,
therefore ye shall not bring this assembly into the land which I have given
them.' 13 These are the waters of Meribah, where the children of
Israel strove with the LORD, and He was sanctified in them.
He made a half-baked Kiddush HASHEM and was punished for it as
talking to the rock would have been much more powerful.
14 And Moses sent messengers from Kadesh unto the king of
Edom: 'Thus saith thy brother Israel: Thou know all the travail that hath
befallen us; 15 how our fathers went down into Egypt, and we dwelt in
Egypt a long time; and the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and our
fathers; 16 and when we cried unto the LORD, He heard our voice, and
sent an angel, and brought us forth out of Egypt; and, behold, we are in
Kadesh, a city in the uttermost of thy border. 17 Let us pass, I pray
thee, through thy land; we will not pass through field or through vineyard,
neither will we drink of the water of the wells; we will go along the king's
highway, we will not turn aside to the right hand nor to the left, until we
have passed thy border.'
He was hoping that they would be brotherly and treat the Bnei
Yisrael as family. Instead they came out ready for war. Don’t worry the plot of history
will end with Yisrael going to Har Tzion to Judge Har Esav and ON THAT DAY THE
L-RD SHALL BE ONE AND HIS NAME ONE.
18 And Edom said unto him: 'Thou shalt not pass through me,
lest I come out with the sword against thee.' 19 And the children of
Israel said unto him: 'We will go up by the highway; and if we drink of thy
water, I and my cattle, then will I give the price thereof; let me only pass
through on my feet; there is no hurt.' 20 And he said: 'Thou shalt
not pass through.' And Edom came out against him with much people, and with a
strong hand. 21 Thus Edom refused to give Israel passage through his
border; wherefore Israel turned away from him.
So for the sake of peace and memory of Yitzchak, Yisrael did not
Judge Esav.
22 And they journeyed from Kadesh; and the children of
Israel, even the whole congregation, came unto mount Hor. 23 And the
LORD spoke unto Moses and Aaron in mount Hor, by the border of the land of
Edom, saying: 24 'Aaron shall be gathered unto his people; for he
shall not enter into the land which I have given unto the children of Israel,
because ye rebelled against My word at the waters of Meribah. 25 Take
Aaron and Eleazar his son, and bring them up unto mount Hor. 26 And
strip Aaron of his garments, and put them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron shall
be gathered unto his people, and shall die there.' 27 And Moses did
as the LORD commanded; and they went up into mount Hor in the sight of all the
congregation. 28 And Moses stripped Aaron of his garments, and put
them upon Eleazar his son; and Aaron died there in the top of the mount; and
Moses and Eleazar came down from the mount.
The Zohar tells how Aaron undressed with the help of Moshe and
Eleazar the watched his son be crowned Cohain Gadol. He then lay down of a flat
stone in a cave and as they left the cave he stopped breathing by a ‘kiss from
HASHEM’. Moshe asked to die that way too. They then sealed the mouth of the
cave in such a way that they did not become Tumay.
29 And when all the congregation saw that Aaron was dead,
they wept for Aaron thirty days, even all the house of Israel.
Although my merit of Miriam, they had water, for Aaron they wept
as he worked on Shalom Beis between husband and wife. Many of the children were
born from such couples that did not divorce and had peace at home.
21:1 And the Canaanite, the king of Arad, who dwelt in the South,
heard tell that Israel came by the way of Atharim; and he fought against
Israel, and took some of them captive. 2 And Israel vowed a vow unto
the LORD, and said: 'If Thou wilt indeed deliver this people into my hand, then
I will utterly destroy their cities.' 3 And the LORD hearkened to the
voice of Israel, and delivered up the Canaanites; and they utterly destroyed
them and their cities; and the name of the place was called Hormah.
The King of Arad was the guardian of Canaan and also from Amalek –
the Medrash. He was on the heights and attacked them down below. However,
HASHEM listened to the prayers and Am Yisrael prevailed and even knocked out
their fort. It is called Tel Arad today a couple miles west of the modern town
of Arad. It had ample water, stores of grain etc. Yet is was taken easily
either because they were defeated outside the town/city or the Bnei Yisrael
managed to scale the wall or destroy the gates quickly.
4 And they journeyed from mount Hor by the way to the Red
Sea, to compass the land of Edom; and the soul of the people became impatient
because of the way. 5 And the people spoke against God, and against
Moses: 'Wherefore have ye brought us up out of Egypt to die in the wilderness?
for there is no bread, and there is no water; and our soul loathed this light
bread.' 6 And the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they
bit the people; and much people of Israel died.
The deserts around Israel have lizards, snakes and scorpions.
Usually, they are few and far between but this rebellion started with water and
continued onward in this later generation that did not see what happened to
Korach or did and forgot. Because they spoke with fire/venom on their tongues
they got hit by venom.
7 And the people came to Moses, and said: 'We have sinned,
because we have spoken against the LORD, and against thee; pray unto the LORD,
that He take away the serpents from us.' And Moses prayed for the
people. 8 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Make thee a fiery serpent,
and set it upon a pole; and it shall come to pass, that every one that is
bitten, when he sees it, shall live.' 9 And Moses made a serpent of
brass, and set it upon the pole; and it came to pass, that if a serpent had
bitten any man, when he looked unto the serpent of brass, he lived.
He had to look heavenly up at the pole. It has now been adopted as
the symbol of doctors and first aid.
10 And the children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in
Oboth. 11 And they journeyed from Oboth, and pitched at Ije-abarim,
in the wilderness which is in front of Moab, toward the
sun-rising. 12 From thence they journeyed, and pitched in the valley
of Zered. 13 From thence they journeyed, and pitched on the other
side of the Arnon, which is in the wilderness, that cometh out of the border of
the Amorites.--For Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the
Amorites; 14 wherefore it is said in the book of the Wars of the
LORD: Vaheb in Suphah, and the valleys of Arnon, 15 And the slope of
the valleys that inclines toward the seat of Ar, and leans upon the border of
Moab.-- 16 And from thence to Beer; that is the well whereof the LORD
said unto Moses: 'Gather the people together, and I will give them
water.'
This is on the eastern side of the Yarden emptying into the Dead
Sea. Today it is called Wadi Mujib and the River of Arnon. https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEic661iVeNJLxlyzyojdpEb786xk4HmjdZ68PExDcdi6xyoCUG1he8lhoyDqKDO_uNu7zMnCik_ngmSvlD7ZzPf0BVRdPLmbA1RuJ9rMrrEI-e5KD5JWpJjq4c1RPliaQ4MfLbgQ4AluE0/s1600/Slide22.JPG

17 Then sang Israel this song: Spring up, O well--sing ye
unto it-- 18 The well, which the princes dugged, which the nobles of
the people delved, with the sceptre, and with their staves. And from the
wilderness to Mattanah; 19 and from Mattanah to Nahaliel; and from
Nahaliel to Bamoth; 20 and from Bamoth to the valley that is in the
field of Moab, by the top of Pisgah, which looks down upon the desert.
This song may have been before or after Balak.
21 And Israel sent messengers unto Sihon king of the
Amorites, saying: 22 'Let me pass through thy land; we will not turn
aside into field, or into vineyard; we will not drink of the water of the
wells; we will go by the king's highway, until we have passed thy
border.' 23 And Sihon would not suffer Israel to pass through his
border; but Sihon gathered all his people together, and went out against Israel
into the wilderness, and came to Jahaz; and he fought against
Israel. 24 And Israel smote him with the edge of the sword, and
possessed his land from the Arnon unto the Jabbok, even unto the children of
Ammon; for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 25 And
Israel took all these cities; and Israel dwelt in all the cities of the
Amorites, in Heshbon, and in all the towns thereof. 26 For Heshbon
was the city of Sihon the king of the Amorites, who had fought against the
former king of Moab, and taken all his land out of his hand, even unto the
Arnon. 27 Wherefore they that speak in parables say: Come ye to
Heshbon! let the city of Sihon be built and established! 28 For a
fire is gone out of Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it hath devoured
Ar of Moab, the lords of the high places of Arnon. 29 Woe to thee,
Moab! thou art undone, O people of Chemosh; he hath given his sons as
fugitives, and his daughters into captivity, unto Sihon king of the
Amorites. 30 We have shot at them--Heshbon is perished--even unto
Dibon, and we have laid waste even unto Nophah, which reacheth unto
Medeba. 31 Thus Israel dwelt in the land of the
Amorites. 32 And Moses sent to spy out Jazer, and they took the towns
thereof, and drove out the Amorites that were there. 33 And they
turned and went up by the way of Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan went out
against them, he and all his people, to battle at Edrei. 34 And the
LORD said unto Moses: 'Fear him not; for I have delivered him into thy hand,
and all his people, and his land; and thou shalt do to him as thou didst unto
Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.' 35 So they smote
him, and his sons, and all his people, until there was none left him remaining;
and they possessed his land. 22:1 And the
children of Israel journeyed, and pitched in the plains of Moab beyond the
Jordan at Jericho.
There is a lot of Zohar and Medrash
on these battles with Sihon and Og. These were the fighters that protected
Canaan on the eastern front and Syria from the South. You can read this in English
in a number of Libraries. One need not look for the deeper meaning the Pshat of
the battles is very nice. The people are just about ready to enter the land and
pass over the Yarden into the Yericho area. But Moav and Midian in the area
have a nasty surprise for Yisrael and their fate will not be pleasant.
This Shabbos is my 75th Hebrew
Birthday and 28th Yahrzeit of the Rebbe
A Timely Delivery by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
http://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5782/1281-43.html
An American
Jew, before immigrating to Israel, went one Sunday to 770 Eastern Parkway,
Brooklyn, to receive a blessing from the Lubavitcher Rebbe. The
Rebbe blessed him and handed him two dollars, saying, "One for you, the
second for the taxi driver."
The man was
somewhat amazed by the second dollar and the Rebbe's instruction. Still, he
saved both dollars in his wallet, and when he arrived in Israel with his
family, he thought about giving the dollar to the taxi driver who drove them
from the airport to the Absorption Center, where they would stay until they
found their own place. However, realizing that the driver was pre-occupied and visibly
nervous, the man judged that the Rebbe did not mean this driver.
There were
other taxis over the years, of course, but none of the drivers seemed to fit
the bill. And so, the dollar remained in his wallet. For twenty years!
One day,
not long ago, our now "veteran" immigrant was riding in a taxi in the
Tel Aviv area. He saw that the driver did not wear a skullcap, but had a book
of Psalms near his seat and had pasted on the gear stick a picture of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe.
They
started talking. The driver told him that in recent months he had decided to
try and strengthen himself to be more in harmony with his Jewish roots, and as
a result, he was now studying Torah regularly at the Chabad Center in his
neighborhood.
"Finally!"
the man thought excitedly to himself, suddenly recalling the
"mission" the Rebbe had delegated to him. He took out his wallet from
his pocket and said to the driver, "Here; take this, please. It is a
dollar the Rebbe told me to give to 'the taxi driver'."
The driver
stamped on the brakes! The cab suddenly swerved sideways, fortunately stopping
safely at the side of the road.
The driver
turned to the startled passenger and said excitedly: "Do you know what you
did? Since I started my return to Torah and mitzvot, it has been difficult
for me at home. My wife is not agreeable at all.
"Today
she challenged me again. 'What are all these ridiculous beliefs you've adopted?
For example, you actually think it makes sense for the Rebbe to send you a
dollar for a blessing? The Rebbe is gone! Let's see him send you a dollar
today!'"
The
passenger now understood what was the Rebbe's intention by "the taxi
driver," twenty years earlier.
