Parsha Ki Tavo, Elul, Stories and news.

Parsha Ki Savo

Back in Parsha Re’eh Moshe Rabbaynu started telling us of a blessing and a curse. We sort of lost track with well of 100 Mitzvos ago but now the Drasha is ending. Our discussion last week was about going to war and conquering the land. Now we are commanded what to do upon entering the land.

26:1 And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance, and dost possess it, and dwell therein; 2 that thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which thou shalt bring in from thy land that the LORD thy God giveth thee; and thou shalt put it in a basket and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to cause His name to dwell there. 3 And thou shalt come unto the priest that shall be in those days, and say unto him: 'I profess this day unto the LORD thy God, that I am come unto the land which the LORD swore unto our fathers to give us.'

The Bechorim start on Chag Shavuos and continue to Chag HaSukkos.

4 And the priest shall take the basket out of thy hand, and set it down before the altar of the LORD thy God. 5 And thou shalt speak and say before the LORD thy God: 'A wandering Aramean was my father, and he went down into Egypt, and sojourned there, few in number; and he became there a nation, great, mighty, and populous.

This is the first part of the Confession of the man bringing the fruits and his confession will also include not letting his crop take roots in somebody else’s field and nourish from there but this is his field. All this section appears at the beginning of the Haggadah of Pesach.

6 And the Egyptians dealt ill with us, and afflicted us, and laid upon us hard bondage. 7 And we cried unto the LORD, the God of our fathers, and the LORD heard our voice, and saw our affliction, and our toil, and our oppression. 8 And the LORD brought us forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand, and with an outstretched arm, and with great terribleness, and with signs, and with wonders. 9 And He hath brought us into this place, and hath given us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And now, behold, I have brought the first of the fruit of the land, which Thou, O LORD, hast given me.' And thou shalt set it down before the LORD thy God, and worship before the LORD thy God. 11 And thou shalt rejoice in all the good which the LORD thy God hath given unto thee, and unto thy house, thou, and the Levite, and the stranger that is in the midst of thee.

This is the confession.

12 When thou hast made an end of tithing all the tithe of thine increase in the third year, which is the year of tithing, and hast given it unto the Levite, to the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, that they may eat within thy gates, and be satisfied, 13 then thou shalt say before the LORD thy God: 'I have put away the hallowed things out of my house, and also have given them unto the Levite, and unto the stranger, to the fatherless, and to the widow, according to all Thy commandment which Thou hast commanded me; I have not transgressed any of Thy commandments, neither have I forgotten them. 14 I have not eaten thereof in my mourning, neither have I put away thereof, being unclean, nor given thereof for the dead; I have hearkened to the voice of the LORD my God, I have done according to all that Thou hast commanded me.

The third and sixth year, Maaser Ani is given to the poor and this confession is also made.

15 Look forth from Thy holy habitation, from heaven, and bless Thy people Israel, and the land which Thou hast given us, as Thou didst swear unto our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey.'

The confession starts with a land flowing with milk and honey and ends with a land flowing with milk and honey.

16 This day the LORD thy God commands thee to do these statutes and ordinances; thou shalt therefore observe and do them with all thy heart, and with all thy soul.

Some Mitzvos apply for a short to perform. A good example is a Bris Milah. The celebration and performance of the Mitzvah is a few minutes long and a male continues with the observance all his life. Other Mitzvos like the Koran Pesach are once a year. But the Korban Tamid is twice daily if we have a Temple and observing Mitzvos with our heart and soul is constantly upon us.

17 Thou hast avouched the LORD this day to be thy God, and that thou would walk in His ways, and keep His statutes, and His commandments, and His ordinances, and hearken unto His voice.

Using your all to do these things.

18 And the LORD hath avouched thee this day to be His own treasure, as He hath promised thee, and that thou shouldest keep all His commandments; 19 and to make thee high above all nations that He hath made, in praise, and in name, and in glory; and that thou mayest be a holy people unto the LORD thy God, as He hath spoken.

Yisrael can only be high by observing the Mitzvos. It is as we say if there is no flour there is no Torah if there is no Torah there is no flour. The fact that Israel has a strong army and is doing relatively well financially is the fact that Yeshivos are being funded. Our finances in worse shape is because characters like Lieberman and the Jews running the NY Times are at war with those learning Torah. The only reason why there is no world wide great depression is that more and more people are taking time to learn Torah like Daf HaYomi after work or full time Kollel.

27:1 And Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, saying: 'Keep all the commandment which I command you this day. 2 And it shall be on the day when ye shall pass over the Jordan unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, that thou shalt set thee up great stones, and plaster them with plaster. 3 And thou shalt write upon them all the words of this law, when thou art passed over; that thou mayest go in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee, a land flowing with milk and honey, as the LORD, the God of thy fathers, hath promised thee. 4 And it shall be when ye are passed over the Jordan, that ye shall set up these stones, which I command you this day, in mount Eval, and thou shalt plaster them with plaster. 5 And there shalt thou build an altar unto the LORD thy God, an altar of stones; thou shalt lift up no iron tool upon them. 6 Thou shalt build the altar of the LORD thy God of unhewn stones; and thou shalt offer burnt-offerings thereon unto the LORD thy God. 7 And thou shalt sacrifice peace-offerings, and shalt eat there; and thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God. 8 And thou shalt write upon the stones all the words of this law very plainly.'

With the destruction of two Temples and the plowing over of things by the Romans or breaking up the stones they have been lost. What we need to do is bring 12 new ones and write in plaster and maintain them.

9 And Moses and the priests the Levites spoke unto all Israel, saying: 'Keep silence, and hear, O Israel; this day thou art become a people unto the LORD thy God. 10 Thou shalt therefore hearken to the voice of the LORD thy God, and do His commandments and His statutes, which I command thee this day.' 11 And Moses charged the people the same day, saying: 12 'These shall stand upon mount Gerizim to bless the people, when ye are passed over the Jordan: Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, and Issachar, and Joseph, and Benjamin; 13 and these shall stand upon mount Eval for the curse: Reuben, Gad, and Asher, and Zebulun, Dan, and Naphtali. 14 And the Levites shall speak, and say unto all the men of Israel with a loud voice: 15 Cursed be the man that makes a graven or molten image, an abomination unto the LORD, the work of the hands of the craftsman, and sets it up in secret. And all the people shall answer and say: Amen.

This is not a statue to commemorate something like one of the Titanic but obviously idol Worship.

16 Cursed be he that dishonors his father or his mother. And all the people shall say: Amen. 17 Cursed be he that removes his neighbor's landmark. And all the people shall say: Amen.

I had this happen to me precisely this week. The Arabs who built one of the walls of the neighbor built over the property line. (Not his fault) But then he decided to build on the wall that is on my side. I told him you are going over the landmark. He basically said in clearer language an equivalent to a four-letter word and you. With the state of my own heart, I will be more milder in my fight and perhaps HASHEM will give me a lenient ruling and as for him, he can enjoy the results of the curse.

18 Cursed be he that makes the blind to go astray in the way. And all the people shall say: Amen.

I assume this also works on the deaf.

19 Cursed be he that perverts the justice due to the stranger, fatherless, and widow. And all the people shall say: Amen.

There are con-artists that take advantage of these people plus the elderly. I heard a story recently of a very wealthy person who took out a large loan from somebody. He went to the courts and got a small amount repaid. He then went via mafia type threats and got most of his money back. [Worse of all the man has a big black Yarmulke on his head saying that he is ‘G-D Fearing’.]

20 Cursed be he that lies with his father's wife; because he has uncovered his father's skirt. And all the people shall say: Amen. 21 Cursed be he that lies with any manner of beast. And all the people shall say: Amen. 22 Cursed be he that lies with his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother. And all the people shall say: Amen. 23 Cursed be he that lies with his mother-in-law. And all the people shall say: Amen. 24 Cursed be he that smites his neighbor in secret. And all the people shall say: Amen. 25 Cursed be he that taketh a bribe to slay an innocent person. And all the people shall say: Amen. 26 Cursed be he that confirms not the words of this law to do them. And all the people shall say: Amen.'

All of the curses have equal values but some are so outlandish for a person that fears and loves G-D. However, if there was no Yetzer to do these things, there would be no curse or warning brought down.

28:1 And it shall come to pass, if thou shalt hearken diligently unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all His commandments which I command thee this day, that the LORD thy God will set thee on high above all the nations of the earth. 2 And all these blessings shall come upon thee, and overtake thee, if thou shalt hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God. 3 Blessed shalt thou be in the city, and blessed shalt thou be in the field. 4 Blessed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, and the fruit of thy cattle, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock. 5 Blessed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough. 6 Blessed shalt thou be when thou come in, and blessed shalt thou be when thou go out. 7 The LORD will cause thine enemies that rise up against thee to be smitten before thee; they shall come out against thee one way, and shall flee before thee seven ways. 8 The LORD will command the blessing with thee in thy barns, and in all that thou put thy hand unto; and He will bless thee in the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee. 9 The LORD will establish thee for a holy people unto Himself, as He hath sworn unto thee; if thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, and walk in His ways. 10 And all the peoples of the earth shall see that the name of the LORD is called upon thee; and they shall be afraid of thee. 11 And the LORD will make thee over-abundant for good, in the fruit of thy body, and in the fruit of thy cattle, and in the fruit of thy land, in the land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers to give thee. 12 The LORD will open unto thee His good treasure the heaven to give the rain of thy land in its season, and to bless all the work of thy hand; and thou shalt lend unto many nations, but thou shalt not borrow. 13 And the LORD will make thee the head, and not the tail; and thou shalt be above only, and thou shalt not be beneath; if thou shalt hearken unto the commandments of the LORD thy God, which I command thee this day, to observe and to do them; 14 and shalt not turn aside from any of the words which I command you this day, to the right hand, or to the left, to go after other gods to serve them.

Like with Parsha Bechukosai, if you do what you are supposed to do as commanded and follow what the L-RD has told you, you will be blessed. However, if you do the opposite you will be heaped curse upon curse for disobedience as the next 50 Pasukim warn.

15 But it shall come to pass, if thou wilt not hearken unto the voice of the LORD thy God, to observe to do all His commandments and His statutes which I command thee this day; that all these curses shall come upon thee, and overtake thee.

All this with rampant non-observance of Torah and Mitzvos by the majority of the people having a negative effect on the righteous too.

16 Cursed shalt thou be in the city, and cursed shalt thou be in the field. 17 Cursed shall be thy basket and thy kneading-trough. 18 Cursed shall be the fruit of thy body, and the fruit of thy land, the increase of thy kine, and the young of thy flock. 19 Cursed shalt thou be when thou come in, and cursed shalt thou be when thou go out. 20 The LORD will send upon thee cursing, discomfiture, and rebuke, in all that thou put thy hand unto to do, until thou be destroyed, and until thou perish quickly; because of the evil of thy doings, whereby thou hast forsaken Me. 21 The LORD will make the pestilence cleave unto thee, until He have consumed thee from off the land, whither thou go in to possess it. 22 The LORD will smite thee with consumption, and with fever, and with inflammation, and with fiery heat, and with drought, and with blasting, and with mildew; and they shall pursue thee until thou perish. 30 Thou shalt betroth a wife, and another man shall lie with her; thou shalt build a house, and thou shalt not dwell therein; thou shalt plant a vineyard, and shalt not use the fruit thereof.

Up until the 1800’s the rights of kings and nobles to have the first night with a bride was in effect in most of eastern Europe and prior to the 1500’s also in the west.

31 Thine ox shall be slain before thine eyes, and thou shalt not eat thereof; thine ass shall be violently taken away from before thy face, and shall not be restored to thee; thy sheep shall be given unto thine enemies; and thou shalt have none to save thee. 32 Thy sons and thy daughters shall be given unto another people, and thine eyes shall look, and fail with longing for them all the day; and there shall be nought in the power of thy hand.   34 so that thou shalt be mad for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 35 The LORD will smite thee in the knees, and in the legs, with a sore boil, whereof thou canst not be healed, from the sole of thy foot unto the crown of thy head. 36 The LORD will bring thee, and thy king whom thou shalt set over thee, unto a nation that thou. 37 And thou shalt become an astonishment, a proverb, and a byword, among all the peoples whither the LORD shall lead thee away. 38 Thou shalt carry much seed out into the field, and shalt gather little in; for the locust shall consume it. 39 Thou shalt plant vineyards and dress them, but thou shalt neither drink of the wine, nor gather the grapes; for the worm shall eat them. 51 And he shall eat the fruit of thy cattle, and the fruit of thy ground, until thou be destroyed; that also shall not leave thee corn, wine, or oil, the increase of thy kine, or the young of thy flock, until he have caused thee to perish. 52 And he shall besiege thee in all thy gates, until thy high and fortified walls come down, wherein thou didst trust, throughout all thy land; and he shall besiege thee in all thy gates throughout all thy land, which the LORD thy God hath given thee. 53 And thou shalt eat the fruit of thine own body, the flesh of thy sons and of thy daughters whom the LORD thy God hath given thee; in the siege and in the straitness, wherewith thine enemies shall straiten thee. 54 The man that is tender among you, and very delicate, his eye shall be evil 67 In the morning thou shalt say: 'Would it were even!' and at even thou shalt say: 'Would it were morning!' for the fear of thy heart which thou shalt fear, and for the sight of thine eyes which thou shalt see. 68 And the LORD shall bring thee back into Egypt in ships, by the way whereof I said unto thee: 'Thou shalt see it no more again'; and there ye shall sell yourselves unto your enemies for bondmen and for bondwoman, and no man shall buy you.

Hidden in the Bible Code in the last sections is the word NAZI.

69 These are the words of the covenant which the LORD commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel in the land of Moab, beside the covenant which He made with them in Horeb. 29:1 And Moses called unto all Israel, and said unto them: Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his land; 2 the great trials which thine eyes saw, the signs and those great wonders; 3 but the LORD hath not given you a heart to know, and eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. 4 And I have led you forty years in the wilderness; your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot.

For the last 40 years you have witnessed these miracles.

5 Ye have not eaten bread, neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink; that ye might know that I am the LORD your God.

G-D has sustained you without work. One big Kollel to learn Torah in he desert. But now you are going home.

6 And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we smote them. 7 And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the Manassites.

Observe and conquest will be easy. Just:

8 Observe therefore the words of this covenant, and do them, that ye may make all that ye do to prosper.

At this point Moshe ends the second Drasha.

Reminder Selichos starts Motzei Shabbos for Ashkenazim.

Elul Mussar and Improvement

When I give a Mussar Talk, I do it for me. This is what the Rabbi of Rehovot Simcha HaCohen Kuk of righteous memory taught me. He passed away a short time ago but his Torah Continues On!

This year when I wrote my commentary on Parsha Va’etchanan I mentioned in Part2 to copy and paste the commentary on the first Paragraph or at least the first sentence of the Shema. I don’t know about you but those printed pages one in my desk in Schul and one in my Siddur for the outside Minyan did wonders for me. About 70-80% of the time I have good Kavana. That is better than 99% of the time mumbling words in the Siddur. I do not know of anybody who is capable of a strong Kavana year after year in Shema, Shemona Esray and other places.

Since one of the three keys to avoiding the bad decree is to pray with greater intensity that is a problem. Back in the late 5720’s to 5730’s I had a strong young brain worked with the English Translation and Hebrew. On Rosh Hashana two people in the Yeshiva were praying Mussaf after 45minutes they were HaRav HaGaon Dov Zvi Korrenstein TzZal and myself. As the years passed, my Hebrew reading speed increase, my understanding increase and my concentration in prayers decrease to 35. 30 and 25 minutes. Last year, it was 15minutes which was the level of saying an perhaps understanding on a low level words. I felt like singing “Where did all my intent and understanding and concentration go … long time passing.”

Oh I got excuses once I was in a traffic accident with a clump on the forehead and the second accident on the back of the head and am happy I still have my memory. But for my memory I started natural antioxygens like Saffron or Curry, Oregano, Cheyanne Pepper, Cumin, Coffee, Dark Chocolate, Olive Oil, Ginger, Cinnamon and more. It is not what it was 100% but better than average for even a younger age group.

Another disease I picked up in Bnei Brak was some poor slob coming off the street with Epstein Barr Virus and eating from serving plates before I got to the hall. I picked up EBV at the age of 49 which knocked me from a physically fit person running at 14,000 feet in Rocky Mountain National Park on a trail to barely moving. It ruined my ability to concentrate like before. I become sleepy. It is no joking matter. 26years later it is a battle but one must try.

On Yom Kippur I use the ‘Al Chet’ of the Chomas Adam to help me erase my sin. My biggest problem is trying to concentrate at two points. The first is saying the frequent words from the first Baruch Atah to the Melech HaKadosh. When I got my first Siddur in late 5727 or early 5728 Oh King, Helper, Savior, Shield follow by the blessing the Shield of Avraham was said in English with such Kavana and in 5729 in Hebrew with my eyes on the English translation. Fast forward to 5783 with the new almost 1 GHz Speed the Kavana flew out the window.

I feel lucky if I remember to mumble “Who is likened unto YOU and HaMelech HaKadosh” instead of the wicked being destroyed like smoke, my words and intent/concentration disappear like smoke. So it might sound funny that instead of the wicked disappearing like smoke and the wicked government being removed, I have to watch out that my prayers don’t disperse like smoke and I be removed.

We have beautiful prayers and words in the morning and the repeat we have Piyutim consisting of alphabet acrostics or combinations of alphabetic prayers. We have on Judgement Day and songs that move and inspire us.

We have the Torah Reading and the composition of the sons of Korach before the blowing of the Shofar 40 blasts.

Then comes the section with the Korbanos and the three sections with 10 Pasukim in each. If Rosh Hashanah falls on Shabbos then the Korban of the Seventh Month on the First Day of the Month etc.

After the sacrifices comes the Malchus or first section that ends with the King making holy the seasons ending in MiKadesh Yisrael V’ Yom HaZecharon or day of remembrance. All the time we should be thinking that HASHEM is KING.  We have watched or heard of the respect paid to the late Queen of the UK and the New King Charles III. Now for an American like I maybe he gets more respect than Charley the Tuna but he is not my King. But as for our relationship with the L-RD G-D must be all the more in protocol, respect and awe. HE is our CREATOR, ETERNAL, DOES NOT TAKE A BRIBE or show favor. Our love and fear must shine through. When we say open the gates for the prayers, mercy and forgiveness. So we must have intent in saying open up the gates for The KING OF THE WORLD … who is THE KING OF HONOR.

The next section deals with remembrance before G-D. How G-D remembered Avraham, Yitzchak and Yacov, Finally the section ends with the blessing Zachor HaBris.

Last and not least is the section dealing with Shofaros. This ends with HASHEM listening to the sounds of the Shofar with compassion. The Hebrew is Shemaya Tefilla B’ Rachamim.

I may go deeper into these sections in coming weeks so that we can up our prayers.

As for Tzeduka, I cannot tell anybody during inflation how much to give and where to give charity. The Torah tells us to give between 10% – 20% of our income. Education for your children-grandchildren or books can be used if they are for learning for Torah and not some Romance Novel etc.

Remember if people owe you money, write a Prozbul this year to be able to claim it for Shmita of Money.

If you want to give charity you might be interest in giving to my Kollel.

Help from a Haunted House by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1291-53

It happened one of those times that an agunah[1] came to consult with the third Rebbe of Chabad, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn, known as the Tzemach Tzedek. Her husband had disappeared, leaving her and their young son alone. Having heard amazing stories of miracles wrought by the Tzemach Tzedek for others sharing her plight, the woman now set her hopes on meeting with the Rebbe. Her brother accompanied her and her little boy on the journey to Lubavitch, and shortly after they arrived, they were admitted into the Rebbe's yechidus (private audience) chamber.

Overcome with emotion, the woman burst into tears, hardly able to form words together. Her brother came to her rescue and described his sister's unfortunate situation, asking the Rebbe for his blessing.

"But I am not a prophet nor the son of a prophet!" said the Tzemach Tzedek.

Sensing the Rebbe's reluctance, the brother changed the subject. "I am planning to travel to the Land of Israel," he said. "Will the Rebbe bless me?"

The Tzemach Tzedek thought before responding.

"Well," he said, "if that's the case, I want your sister to travel with you. The journey is a long one; perhaps your sister will find her missing husband on the way."

"Alright," said the brother.

The Tzemach Tzedek then blessed them both and the pair left the Rebbe's room. They returned home and began getting ready for their journey, loading their belongings onto a carriage and taking farewell of family and acquaintances. It did not take long until brother, sister, and the son/nephew left their hometown and set out for their first stop, the city of Odessa.

"You know," said the brother as the carriage rolled along the country roads, "I've been thinking about a possible problem concerning your son. The passport officials in Odessa are very particular about their job. They take great pains to check every detail mentioned in people's passports. Your son isn't mentioned in all your papers, so we are likely to be headed for trouble trying to go through Odessa.

"Better, you take the boy and go through Yassi, where they are not so particular. We'll meet up together afterwards."

"How could you leave me alone with a little boy?" cried his sister. "I can't make the trip without your help!"

"Okay," her brother shrugged. "Then we'll both travel through Yassi."
He pulled on the reins, turning the horses towards Yassi. Ever mindful of the Rebbe's counsel, the travelers made certain to stop at every village on the way. They combed the streets and questioned local residents, but to no avail. They could not locate the missing man.

They continued driving through the country, getting almost to Yassi, when nightfall forced them to stop at a roadside inn. The near complete darkness confused the brother and, as he neared the inn, he accidentally bumped into a mail coach parked nearby. A string of obscenities rang through the air as the mail driver roundly cursed whoever it was that dared bump his carriage.

"He sounds like my husband," whispered the woman.

"Don't be ridiculous," her brother answered. "Stop fantasizing; it's some Russian peasant. Can't you hear from his language? Let's get away before he vents his anger on us."

He drove right up to the inn where, tired and hungry, the small group entered for some food and rest. The innkeeper quickly approached his newest customers, sat them down a table, and offered them a warm meal.

"You know, we bumped into the mail carriage outside," said the brother. "Who's the person sitting in it out there?"

The innkeeper sighed. "He used to be a Jew like us," he said. "He converted."

"That's interesting," said the brother. "My sister says he sounds like her runaway husband."

The innkeeper opened his eyes in surprise. "That's too bad," he said, shaking his head sadly. "He's a real difficult character. No way you'll receive a writ of divorce from that crook."

Suddenly the door crashed open and the mail driver stormed into the room, still cursing the driver who had collided with his carriage. The lady rose from her chair with a cry of surprise and the villain, seeing her, stopped dead in his tracks.

"So, you found me" he said sulkily. "I suppose you want a divorce. We can go to the next village. There's a rabbi there; he'll do the divorce for us." Now it was the innkeeper who cried out in surprise. He had never seen the loathsome creature act so gracious - without offering an argument or total denial.

The group quickly left the inn and soon two carriages could be seen headed for the nearest village. They arrived at the rabbi's home, informed him of the circumstances, and the divorce was properly performed. The convert remained strangely subdued throughout the entire procedure, granting the divorce without demanding conditions of any sort. With gratitude in their hearts, and warm thoughts of the Tzemach Tzedek, the freed woman now eligible for remarriage clutched the precious paper and returned to lodge at the inn.

Inside, the innkeeper stood alone at a table in the quiet dining hall and thought about the amazing scene he just witnessed - the renegade Jew, the fearsome ruffian, acting so respectfully to his despised wife.

The next moment he jumped as the door crashed open again. The mail driver stood in the doorway, shaking with cold. He closed the door and sat down at an empty table.

"Pour me a large beer!" he shouted to the frightened innkeeper.

The innkeeper hurried behind the counter and filled his largest glass with the frothy liquid. After all, the driver deserved the best treatment for his dramatic reversal from his usual behavior.

He brought the glass over and set it down on the table.

"I just gave the divorce," the driver said to no one in particular. "Didn't ask for anything."

The innkeeper steadied his shaking hands. Out of the corner of his eye he saw the brother and sister enter the room and sit down nearby. Curiosity overcame his fear as he sat down opposite the driver.

"That was very nice of you," he offered. "Some people refuse to give a divorce until they demand and receive money in return. Why didn't you?"

The driver took a few large gulps and wiped his dirty sleeve across his mouth.

"I know you're surprised," he said gruffly. "No matter. I'll tell you everything and you'll understand. You know the haunted house near this inn?"

The innkeeper nodded. It was a reference to an empty ruin nearby, understood to be frequented by evil spirits. All kind of hair-raising stories were associated with the demons living in that place, and local residents made sure to give the house a wide berth.

"My mail route passes it every day," continued the renegade Jew. "I drive past that haunted wreck, past your inn, and I deliver mail to the villages. I couldn't care less about the demons; what can they take from me anyway? I drive right by there every day and laugh right in their faces."

The driver took another swig and set the glass down.

"Today it was different though," he said grimly. "The horses had barely trotted toward the ruins when I was overcome with fear. I pulled the reins and just parked there, shaking in fright. I could feel the goose-bumps cover my body. My hair stood on end; my teeth chattered violently. I was totally powerless and unable to command the horses any further. Whenever I merely thought of continuing, the fear intensified tenfold.

"Suddenly, something crashed into the back of my carriage. Apparently, someone accidentally bumped into my wagon and, strangely, I felt the fear dissipate at once. I cursed them - whoever it was - and felt my old courage return. Yet the whole thing was so strange - the sudden fear and its inexplicable end - that I resolved to get to the bottom of the matter and find out who had bumped me. I came into the inn and…, well, the rest you know already.

"The demons were holding me hostage until I gave the divorce, of that I was certain. So, I gave in, I went with my wife and did whatever the rabbi wanted. I didn't request anything, not a penny. You can ask her."

The driver stood up and approached his former wife.

"Here!" he said, offering her a wad of bills. "This is for the boy. He's my son after all."

He finished his glass and left the inn, leaving his family agape in wonderment at the supernatural powers of the Tzemach Tzedek. They rested up, thanked the innkeeper for his hospitality, and continued onward to the Holy Land.

Biographical note:
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneersohn [29 Elul 1789-13 Nissan 1866], the third Rebbe of Chabad, was known as the Tzemach Tzedek, after his books of Halachic responsa and Talmudic commentary called by that name. He was renowned not only as a Rebbe, but also as a leading scholar in his generation in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah.

Footnote:[1] A woman that it is not known if her husband is alive or not.

I got this from Phil B. who received this from Susan K.

Never forget this conversation: Todd: Hello… Operator…listen to me…I can’t speak very loud. – This is an emergency. I’m a passenger on a United flight to San Francisco.. We have a situation here….Our plane has been hijacked…..can you understand me?

Lisa: (exhaling a deep breath to herself) I understand… Can the hijackers see you talking on the phone?

Todd: No

Lisa: Can you tell me how many hijackers are on the plane?

Todd: There are three that we know of.

Lisa: Can you see any weapons? What kind of weapons do they have?

Todd: Yes…. they don’t have guns….they have knives – they took over the plane with knives.

Lisa: Do you mean…like steak knives?

Todd: No, these are razor knives…like box cutters.

Lisa: Can you tell what country these people are from?

Todd: No…..I don’t know. They sound like they’re from the mid-east.

Lisa: Have they said what they want?

Todd: Someone announced from the cockpit that there was a bomb on board. He said he was the captain and to stay in our seats and stay quiet.

He said that they were meeting these men’s demands and returning to the airport… It was very broken English, and… I’m telling you…it sounded fake!

Lisa: Ok sir, please give me your name.

Todd: My name is Todd Beamer.

Lisa: Ok Todd….my name is Lisa…Do you know your flight number? If you can’t remember, it’s on your ticket.

Todd: It’s United Flight 93.

Lisa: Now Todd, can you try to tell me exactly what happened?

Todd: Two of the hijackers were sitting in first class near the cockpit. A third one was sitting near the back of the coach section. The two up. front got into the cockpit somehow; there was shouting. The third hijacker said he had a bomb. It looks like a bomb. He’s got it tied to his waist with a red belt of some kind.

Lisa: So is the door to the cockpit open?

Todd: No, the hijackers shut it behind them.

Lisa: Has anyone been injured?

Todd: Yes, ..they…they killed one passenger sitting in first class. There’s been lots of shouting. We don’t know if the pilots are dead or alive. A flight attendant told me that the pilot and copilot had been forced from the cockpit and may have been wounded.

Lisa: Where is the 3rd hijacker now Todd?

Todd: He’s near the back of the plane. They forced most of the passengers into first class. There are fourteen of us here in the back. Five are flight attendants. He hasn’t noticed that I slipped into this pantry to get the phone. The guy with the bomb ordered us to sit on the floor in the rear of the plane……….oh Jesus.. Help!

Lisa: Todd….are you ok? Tell me what’s happening!

Todd: Hello…..We’re going down….I think we’re going to crash……Wait – wait a minute. No, we’re leveling off….we’re ok. I think we may be turning around…..That’s it – we changed directions. Do you hear me….we’re flying east again.

Lisa: Ok Todd…. What’s going on with the other passengers?

Todd: Everyone is… really scared. A few passengers with cell phones have made calls to relatives. A guy, Jeremy, was talking to his wife just before the hijacking started. She told him that hijackers had crashed two planes into the World Trade Center……Lisa is that true??

Lisa: Todd…..I have to tell you the truth…..it’s very bad. The World Trade Center is gone. Both of the towers have been destroyed.

Todd: Oh God —help us!

Lisa: A third plane was taken over by terrorists. It crashed into the Pentagon in Washington DC. Our country is under attack….and I’m afraid that your plane may be part of their plan.

Todd: Oh dear God. Dear God…….Lisa, will you do something for me?

Lisa: I’ll try….if I can….Yes.

Todd: I want you to call my wife and my kids for me and tell them what’s happened. Promise me you’ll call..

Lisa: I promise – I’ll call.

Todd: Our home number is 201 353-1073…….You have the same name as my wife…Lisa….We’ve been married for 10 years. She’s pregnant with our 3rd child. Tell her that I love her…….(choking up)..I’ll always love her..(clearing throat) We have two boys.. David, he’s 3 and Andrew, he’s 1…..Tell them……(choking) tell them that their daddy loves them and that he is so proud of them. (clearing throat again) Our baby is due January 12th…..I saw an ultra sound…..it was great….we still don’t know if it’s a girl or a boy………Lisa?

Lisa: (barely able to speak) I’ll tell them, I promise Todd.

Todd: I’m going back to the group—if I can get back I will…

Lisa: Todd, leave this line open…are you still there?……

Lisa: (dials the phone..) Hello, FBI, my name is Lisa Jefferson, I’m a telephone supervisor for GTE. I need to report a terrorist hijacking of a United Airlines Flight 93….Yes I’ll hold.

Goodwin: Hello, this is Agent Goodwin.. I understand you have a hijacking situation?

Lisa: Yes sir, I’ve been talking with a passenger, a Todd Beamer, on Flight 93 who managed to get to an air phone unnoticed.

Goodwin: Where did this flight originate, and what was its destination?

Lisa: The flight left Newark New Jersey at 8 A.M. departing for San Francisco. The hijackers took over the plane shortly after takeoff, and several minutes later the plane changed course – it is now flying east.

Goodwin: Ms. Jefferson…I need to talk to someone aboard that plane. Can you get me thru to the planes phone?

Lisa: I still have that line open sir, I can patch you through on a conference call…hold a mo…..

Todd: Hello Lisa, Lisa are you there?

Lisa: Yes, I’m here. Todd, I made a call to the FBI, Agent Goodwin is on the line and will be talking to you as well.

Todd: The others all know that this isn’t your normal hijacking. Jeremy called his wife again on his cell phone. She told him more about the World Trade Center and all.

Goodwin: Hello Todd. This is Agent Goodwin with the FBI. We have been monitoring your flight. Your plane is on a course for Washington, DC. These terrorists sent two planes into the World Trade Center and one plane into the Pentagon. Our best guess is that they plan to fly your plane into either the White House or the United States Capital Building.

Todd: I understand…hold on……I’ll…….I’ll be back..

Lisa: Mr. Goodwin, how much time do they have before they get to Washington?

Goodwin: Not long ma’am. They changed course over Cleveland; they’re approaching Pittsburgh now. Washington may be twenty minutes away.

Todd: (breathing a little heavier) The plane seems to be changing directions just a little. It’s getting pretty rough up here. The plane is flying real erratic….We’re not going to make it out of here. Listen to me….I want you to hear this….I have talked with the others….we have decided we would not be pawns in these hijackers suicidal plot.

Lisa: Todd, what are you going to do?

Todd: We’ve hatched a plan. Four of us are going to rush the hijacker with the bomb. After we take him out, we’ll break into the cockpit. A stewardess is getting some boiling water to throw on the hijackers at the controls. We’ll get them….and we’ll take them out. Lisa, …..will you do one last thing for me?

Lisa: Yes…What is it?

Todd: Would you pray with me?

They pray: Our father which art in Heaven

Hallowed be thy name,

Thy kingdom come, thy will be done

on earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread,

And forgive us our trespasses

As we forgive our trespassers,

And lead us not into temptation

But deliver us from evil

For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory

Forever…..Amen

The Lord is my shepherd, I shall not want…

He makes me to lie down in green pastures

He leads me beside the still waters

He restores my soul

He leads me in paths of righteousness

for His name’s sake

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death

I will fear no evil, for thou art with me…..

Todd: (softer) God help me… help me….(clears throat and louder)

Are you guys ready? …

Let’s Roll……………………

This week the Rabbis issued a few Psakim on homosexuality and transgender children in the religious world. There is no status in Judaism besides the prohibitions of Vayikra 18:22, 20:13 involving the death penalty. Nowhere in halacha is a person defined by his sexual orientation. Jewish society consists of halakhically defined priest, Levi, king, prophet, Sanhedrin, minor, man (Ish), woman, deaf-mute, etc. The homosexual does not appear on the list of those with a separate status in the Jewish community. There are biological and halakhic definitions of hermaphrodite, menstruant, menopausal female, etc. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/359916 Homosexuality is an error like eating non-kosher or kosher with blood in it.  … This differing view of homosexual activity, Jewish society changes the errant Jew’s perception of himself. He is no longer a reviled outsider, pushed outside of Jewish society and synagogue, should be welcomed into all existing institutions with the welcome afforded those who eat non-kosher food or drive on Shabbos.

Rabbis do not recognize Gender Changes. Religious-Zionist rabbis have sent a letter to the leaders of the religious public school system regarding the case of a girl in third grade who has been passing herself off as a boy for over two years at a religious school in Givat Shmuel.
