Parsha Shemos Part 1, safety first, story, news

Prayers for Men: Shalom Charles ben Gracia, Daniel ben Rivka, Ephraim ben Mazel, Zev ben Rachel, Yisrael Dovid ben Chaya Yenta, Yisrael Ben Dovid ben Drorah Rivka, Meir Melech ben Bracha, Rachamim ben Charlotte Jacqueline,

Women: Karen Neshama bas Esther Ruth, Chaya Melecha Rachel bas Baila Alta, Tsvia Simcha bas Devorah Yachad, Miriam bas Irene Taita Malka, Drorah Rivka bas Chana, Leah bas Sara, Esther Georgette bas Misooda, Mine’ Dulah bas Maxine, Rachel Izel bas Sara, Devorah Rosa (row sa) bas Freyda Leah, re-added temp. Miriam Esther bas Golda Chaya,  Dina bas Sara.

Removed from my prayer list was the leader of Shas Rabbi Shimon ben Haviva Baadani, 94, who passed away. Sometimes, the bigger the saint the more the press ignores. This past year the TV Stations covered the funerals of Rav Kaniewski and Rabbi Druckman of righteous memory. But when it came to a dark skinned Baadani there was only the sound of silence. This upset me and infuriated me but the desecration of his status in this world will same him for any troubles that he might have in the next.

Parsha in the news: Shemos 1:9-10 exactly as I commented below. 39% of Americans say Jews more loyal to Israel than the US. Not so but the reason why enslavement occurred. https://www.jpost.com/diaspora/antisemitism/article-728367

Parsha Shemos Part 1

The first 7 Pasukim of this Sefer links us back to the end of Beresheis. The sons of Yisrael continued observing Shabbos, Bris and some form of Kashrus especially the Gid HaNashe (removing the tendon of the thigh).

Parsha Shemos is covered in full as it reflects upon the whole Sefer that follows. Some sections of the Mishkan that repeat previous sections can be skipped over. But Shemos and the mission of Moshe to Pharaoh and the Bnei Yisrael start off on a rocky road. Moshe is reluctant to go and the Bnei Yisrael become aroused. Pharaoh is a god-king and is arrogant and strong so he puts down the demands of the lowly slaves. He hasn’t the foggiest idea of what awaits him.

1:1 Now these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; every man came with his household: 2 Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah; 3 Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin; 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 And all the souls that came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls; and Joseph was in Egypt already.

This is the link between Vayigash, Vayehi and Shemos.

6 And Joseph died, and all his brethren, and all that generation. 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and waxed exceeding mighty; and the land was filled with them.

When the Bnei Yisrael was 70 refugees and their wives, now a few generations in Egypt comes up the stranger problem of most not marrying within the local population and the dual loyalty argument arises.

8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who knew not Joseph.

After having heard a US President say 57 States when there is only 50 and he graduated Harvard, I began thinking that perhaps this Pharaoh had no inkling of history either. But the Sages say that there is a possibility of Pharaoh pretending not to know Yosef.

9 And he said unto his people: 'Behold, the people of the children of Israel are too many and too mighty for us; 10 come, let us deal wisely with them, lest they multiply, and it come to pass, that, when there befalls us any war, they also join themselves unto our enemies, and fight against us, and get them up out of the land.'

A year or more before I thought of moving to Israel, I was a gung-ho American with no other semblance of loyalty and a fellow wondered what would happen to me if the US went to fight Israel where my loyalty would be?

11 Therefore they did set over them taskmasters to afflict them with their burdens. And they built for Pharaoh store-cities, Pithom and Raamses. 12 But the more they afflicted them, the more they multiplied and the more they spread abroad. And they were adread because of the children of Israel.

What would happen if these tens of thousands or over one hundred thousand join with Egypt’s enemies to over-throw the Pharaoh Dynasty.

13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel to serve with rigor.

With more work and whippings that a regular man would normally endure.

14 And they made their lives bitter with hard service, in mortar and in brick, and in all manner of service in the field; in all their service, wherein they made them serve with rigor.

Worse than the full service of an average slave but more than that with whippings and curses.

15 And the king of Egypt spoke to the Hebrew midwives, of whom the name of the one was Shiphrah, and the name of the other Puah; 16 and he said: 'When ye do the office of a midwife to the Hebrew women, ye shall look upon the birthstool: if it be a son, then ye shall kill him; but if it be a daughter, then she shall live.'

Yocheved and Miriam according to Rashi. I wonder as Miriam was only 7 at the time but until the days of Dovid HaMelech maybe a later date, females married at 7 Sanhedrin on Bas Sheva and Dovid HaMelech that she was married to Uriah the Hittite at the age of 7.

17 But the midwives feared God, and did not as the king of Egypt commanded them, but saved the men-children alive. 18 And the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said unto them: 'Why have ye done this thing, and have saved the men-children alive?'

Now their lives were on the line.

19 And the midwives said unto Pharaoh: 'Because the Hebrew women are not as the Egyptian women; for they are lively, and are delivered ere the midwife come unto them.'

Comparing the Bnei Yisrael women and animals causing them to give birth before we arrive. The proud Pharaoh thought of the Bnei Yisrael as beasts of burden so his bigotry caused him to let the midwifes go.

20 And God dealt well with the midwives; and the people multiplied, and waxed very mighty. 21 And it came to pass, because the midwives feared God, that He made them houses.

Pharaoh then invested in a maternity hospital in order to those who gave birth to kill the males that kill all the male babies.

22 And Pharaoh charged all his people, saying: 'Every son that is born ye shall cast into the river, and every daughter ye shall save alive.'

Foolish king for every daughter could produce a child and an older man marry or produce with different women but if the females were killed, the men could not produce replacements fast enough to a shrinking population.

2:1 And there went a man of the house of Levi, and took to wife a daughter of Levi.

The Sages comment on a daughter of Levi Mamash (precisely) meaning that Yocheved was the daughter of Levi. The simile meaning is that she was a daughter from the tribe of Levi.

2 And the woman conceived, and bore a son; and when she saw him that he was a goodly child, she hid him three months.

She gave birth in the sixth month or she did not show her pregnancy too early for the Egyptians kept an eye on the Jewish Women and could estimate the time of birth. The other possibility is that every couple of months they made a house to house search of the Bnei Yisrael.

3 And when she could no longer hide him, she took for him an ark of bulrushes, and daubed it with slime and with pitch; and she put the child therein, and laid it in the flags by the river's brink.

She did not want to abandon him but could no longer hide him and wondered if he could survive the trip down the river so she made a water proof cradle or Teva.

4 And his sister stood afar off, to know what would be done to him.

Miriam ran or walked along the river bank to see what would happen with the Teva.

5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the river; and her maidens walked along by the river-side; and she saw the ark among the flags, and sent her handmaid to fetch it.

The Midrash says her hand extended but it could be that when she extended her arm, miraculously the wind or current pushed the ark towards her.

6 And she opened it, and saw it, even the child; and behold a boy that wept. And she had compassion on him, and said: 'This is one of the Hebrews' children.'

He did not cry like an infant but rather wept like a toddler with a longer duration of a cry.

7 Then said his sister to Pharaoh's daughter: 'Shall I go and call thee a nurse of the Hebrew women, that she may nurse the child for thee?'

The Midrash says that she tried an Egyptian wet nurse but he refused until Miriam suggested that Yocheved nurse him under the ring from Pharaoh’s Daughter that the soldiers would not dare touch him. It is also possible that Yocheved lived for a short time within the Palace.

8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her: 'Go.' And the maiden went and called the child's mother.

Pharaoh’s daughter adopted him and he grew up as a prince of Egypt. Note often the Pharaohs would marry their daughters or have brother marry sister. Being a god-king, they were above the laws of Noach.

9 And Pharaoh's daughter said unto her: 'Take this child away, and nurse it for me, and I will give thee thy wages.' And the woman took the child, and nursed it.

The Pshat states that she brought the child home with a signet of Pharaoh or Royalty and raised Moshe.

10 And the child grew, and she brought him unto Pharaoh's daughter, and he became her son. And she called his name Moses, and said: 'Because I drew him out of the water.'

Moshe for pulling out of the water.

11 And it came to pass in those days, when Moses was grown up, that he went out unto his brethren, and looked on their burdens; and he saw an Egyptian smiting a Hebrew, one of his brethren.

Moshe as a Prince was not dressed in the uniform of a taskmaster. There is a gap of many years and it appears that Moshe went to conquer Sudan for Pharaoh and was the ruler there. Afterwards he returned home and then saw this incident occur. Moshe reasoned “I am my brother’s keeper” vs. the Kayn disavowal.

12 And he looked this way and that way, and when he saw that there was no man, he smote the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand.

This sentence is the physical Pshat but the Drash is that he looked into the man’s future and saw that no Ger or Righteous of the Nations would come from him and he then slaughtered him.

13 And he went out the second day, and, behold, two men of the Hebrews were striving together; and he said to him that did the wrong: 'Wherefore smite thou thy fellow?'

Why beat another or fellow Ben Yisrael? Shouldn’t the Bnei Yisrael be more worried from an external threat than cause an internal threat?

14 And he said: 'Who made thee a ruler and a judge over us? think thou to kill me, as thou didst kill the Egyptian?' And Moses feared, and said: 'Surely the thing is known.'

It now was public knowledge that Moshe killed the Egyptian and in a short time the secret Police or Kapos picked this up and Pharaoh knew of this.

15 Now when Pharaoh heard this thing, he sought to slay Moses. But Moses fled from the face of Pharaoh, and dwelt in the land of Midian; and he sat down by a well.

And he sought to slay Moses: He delivered him to the executioner to execute him, but the sword had no power over him. That is [the meaning of] what Moses said, “and He saved me from Pharaoh’s ×—ֶרֶב(Exod. 18:4). [From Mechilta, Yisro 1, Exod. Rabbah 1:321]

Based on Rashi above he must have cut a deal with the executioner who knew that his head would be had if Moshe lived; Moshe fled to the wilderness. It is also possible that he fled before Pharaoh heard but Rashi quotes a Midrash of Zohar.

Now he was a fugitive. He brought some food and water for his trip in the direction of Eretz Yisrael. The law at the time was not to take on your own water but wait until you were invited by the owner of the well.

And he sat down by a well: Heb. וַ×™ֵּשֶׁב, an expression of sitting. He learned from Jacob, who met his mate at a well. [From Exod. Rabbah 1:32, Tanchuma, Shemos 10] [The comment on the sentence He stayed in the land of Midian does not appear in some editions of Rashi. Therefore, it is enclosed within parentheses. The first sentence of the second paragraph does not appear in the Miraoth Gedoloth. It does, however, appear in all other editions of Rashi. Perhaps it was unintentionally omitted. Rashi intends here to differentiate between the first וַ×™ֵּשֶׁב and the second וַ×™ֵּשֶׁב He explains that the first וַ×™ֵּשֶׁב means staying, residing, or tarrying, signifying that Moses resided in Midian. The second וַ×™ֵּשֶׁב denotes, literally, sitting, meaning that Moses sat down by a well. The Sages of the midrashim teach us that Moses sat there intentionally, for he expected to meet his mate, just as Jacob had met Rachel and Eliezer had met Rebecca when he sought a mate for Isaac. Otherwise, Moses would not have sat by the well simply to watch how the flocks were being watered.]

16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters; and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father's flock.

Now the chief of Midian had: Heb. וּלְ×›ֹ×”ֵן מִדְ×™ָן, i.e., the most prominent among them. He had abandoned idolatry, so they banned him from [living with] them. [From Exod. Rabbah 1:32, Tanchuma, Shemos 11

17 And the shepherds came and drove them away; but Moses stood up and helped them, and watered their flock.

Moshe had been trained in martial arts from a young age growing up in Pharaoh’s house.

He saw either them bullying the sisters or harassing them for abuse. He could not stand idle at this point and as an esteemed warrior took on these shepherds single-handed.

18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said: 'How is it that ye are come so soon to-day?' 19 And they said: 'An Egyptian delivered us out of the hand of the shepherds, and moreover he drew water for us, and watered the flock.' 20 And he said unto his daughters: 'And where is he? Why is it that ye have left the man? call him, that he may eat bread.'

To the Egyptians he was a Hebrew but to the Midianites he was an Egyptian. I once worked with a man named Brody and he told me that when he was in Canada he was called and bullied as a Jew. Now in Israel he has become a Canadian.

21 And Moses was content to dwell with the man; and he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter.

Yisro was very smart and had even been an advisor to Pharaoh along with Bilaam and Iyob. He was sharp enough to understand that he could use this man as a shepherd and supply his daughter with a husband.

22 And she bore a son, and he called his name Gershom; for he said: 'I have been a stranger in a strange land.'

From the word Ger aka stranger. We have two types of Gerim in Israel such as a Ger Tzedek who essential is a Jew aka full convert and a Ger Toshav or citizen who takes on Israeli rule and the seven Mitzvos of Noach.

23 And it came to pass in the course of those many days that the king of Egypt died; and the children of Israel sighed by reason of the bondage, and they cried, and their cry came up unto God by reason of the bondage. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, with Isaac, and with Jacob.

On Rosh Hashanah we say, “There is no forgetfulness before you.” Rather that the time has come to fulfill the promises to the forefathers. This Pharaoh that sort out Moshe in the course of about 40 years died and along with him the captains of the soldiers that sort Moshe.

25 And God saw the children of Israel, and God took cognizance of them.

At this point, G-D was about to initiate the redemption process.

With the help of G-D we will continue the Parsha next week. I am supposed to undergo Cardia Inversion on Wednesday and with the help of HASHEM will be pumping in a sinusoidal rhythm again. Then you can remove me from the Prayer list.

Safety first – my story this week. Background: A number of years ago I put in non-slip bath mats in the bath-tub. After a while, it got mold and my wife got tired of cleaning the mold. However, this week she slipped and fell. I did have some hand grips to hold on to but for some reason she fell being unable to grab them. At her age, strength and weight she could not get up. Worse than that as she fell she managed to push the water to full hot and screamed for me who was on my way. She shut the water off but now we tried to get her up.

After about an hour and dressing her at least modestly enough I tried with a younger neighbor to help her up. Finally, after trying to lift her against my Cardiologists advice, we gave up and called the Ambulance. A fellow who looked like a wrestling campion came from Magen Dovid. He came from behind below her rib cage and lifted her up.

She had dislocated her shoulder and was black and blue here and there. We spent one morning in the hospital and some time by our doctor. Extra shopping time on my part and helping make salads and potato peeling. That is like two days of writing commentary and looking for stories.

My wife asked what would have been if I had traveled to the States and this happened. Sometimes being alone at a more advanced age requires diligence on the part of the nearest child for parent care.

This story is warning advice for my readers. Make sure that there are non-slip mats in the bath or shower and more hand grips should be put in one may not be enough.

The Singing Stutterer by R. Yerachmiel Tilles

http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1309-16

It is always a special experience to hear Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu Dan from Paris when he leads the prayers. Each word has its suitable trill, no syllable is pronounced by habit. Those listening would never guess that the possessor of this melodious voice not so long ago stuttered and had difficulty to speak clearly.

To understand how this happened we have to go back to the beginning, over six decades ago.

Rabbi Dan's father was one of the survivors of the 1929 Arab pogrom in Hebron*. He left Israel as soon as he was old enough, and immigrated to France. There he married, but to the young couple's sorrow, they remained childless. When they finally accepted that there was no chance of their having children together, the wife, with great sacrifice, suggested to her husband that they get divorced and he marry her friend. In spite of the hardship they took this drastic step, and that is how Rabbi Dan's father came to marry Rabbi Dan's mother.

On the holiday of Shavuot in the year 1963, in the seventh month of her pregnancy, the expectant mother went to the chasidic synagogue in the Pletzel, the Jewish neighborhood in Paris. [In this synagogue the Lubavitcher Rebbe prayed during his stay in Paris in the beginning of the Second World War.]

After the prayer service a farbrengen (chasidic gathering) was held. During the farbrengen, one of the participants cried out very loudly, which shocked the young woman so much, to the extent that it caused the onset of birth pangs.

She was rushed to the hospital where several hours later she gave birth to a tiny, fragile, pre-mature baby boy.

Developing slowly, the baby stayed several months in the incubator under his parents worried and watchful eyes. When finally, the brit milah (circumcision) could be performed the parents breathed a sigh of relief. Many of the Jews of the Jewish community in Paris rejoiced together with them.

The newborn was named Shmuel-Eliyahu.

When Shmuel Eliyahu reached the age of beginning to speak, it became clear that he stuttered. The doctors were of the opinion that this handicap was caused by the shock the mother experienced when in the synagogue. They had no cure for this congenital affliction.

The parents accepted the situation…but Shmuel Eliyahu did not! In spite of his severe handicap, or maybe because of it, Shmuel Eliyahu already as a child fell in love with songs and chazanut (cantorial music). He felt that he needed to find a way to overcome his difficulty with articulation.

Years went by. Shmuel Eliyahu studied in institutions whose interpretations of Torah, although genuine, were far removed from a chasidic way of life.

His connection with Chabad and especially with the Lubavitcher Rebbe came about through the Rebbe's emissary, Rabbi Yaakov Biton, from Sarcelles. It began with the wedding of Rabbi Biton. The two were already close friends and during the week before the wedding Shmuel Eliyahu accompanied the groom everywhere [according to the Jewish custom that neither bride nor groom should go out alone during the week before the wedding ].

After the wedding and the following festive week, Rabbi Biton flew to New York to the Lubavitcher Rebbe. He suggested to Shmuel Eliyahu to join him.

"You will thank me for every moment you will spend in the presence of the Rebbe," he promised.

"And he was right," says Rabbi Dan today [2005].

"It was during the month of Tishrei 1987 that I arrived in Brooklyn to be near the Rebbe. I stayed in President Street. Close to me lived the musician brothers, Yossi and Avi Piamenta. A friendship was soon established between us. I loved spending time with them and enjoyed using my voice musically.

"It must be mentioned in their favor that they ignored my severe stuttering; instead they praised my vocal abilities. The openness and affection they showed me captured my heart.

"In their merit I started to believe more in myself. As is natural, I felt attracted to the world of those who embraced me with such kindness, the world of Chabad.

"The final stage of my entrance to the world of chasidut was on the night following Simchat Torah that month.

"As was his custom, the Rebbe poured wine from his cup kos shel bracha - "cup of blessing" to all those present, while all the chasidim stood around and sang enthusiastically. My friends told me that at this special occasion the Rebbe gives plentiful blessings to whomever asks.

"The truth is that I was extremely shy to speak to the Rebbe, but I decided that I owed this to myself. I needed to overcome the embarrassment and to ask for a blessing to be rid of the disturbing stuttering.

"I pushed my way into the line. When I was standing before the Rebbe, I took courage and asked for a blessing. The Rebbe's words, spoken amongst the tumult of the singing around him, astounded me with the divine spirit they revealed: "You will stop stuttering by means of singing."

"I left the shul shaking all over from emotion. How did the Rebbe know that I love to sing?

"From then on, adhering to the guidance of the Rebbe, I sang and sang at each opportunity. It wasn't a long time before the blessing of the Rebbe was realized: the stutter disappeared as if it had never been!"

With twinkling eyes Rabbi Dan concluded, "The greatest merit I experienced was once being chazan (cantor) in the Rebbe's minyan, in his presence.

"Every opportunity that comes my way I try to use my voice in order to gladden other Jews. I feel that in this manner I express my great gratitude to G-d for the miracle he made for me, through the blessing of the Rebbe."

Connection: This week's Torah Reading of Shemos tells us that Moses had a stuttering problem (Ex. 4:10).

Biographical note:
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe: [11 Nissan 5662 - 3 Tammuz 5754 (April 1902 - June 1994 C.E.)], became the seventh Rebbe of the Chabad dynasty after his father-in-law's passing on 10 Shvat 5710 (1950 C.E.). He is widely acknowledged as the greatest Jewish leader of the 2nd half of the 20th century. Although a dominant scholar in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah and fluent in many languages and scientific subjects, the Rebbe is best known for his extraordinary love and concern for every Jew on the planet. His emissaries around the globe dedicated to strengthening Judaism number in the thousands. Hundreds of volumes of his teachings have been printed, as well as dozens of English renditions.

Footnotes:

*when Muslims slaughtered 67 (or 69 - Wiki) Jewish residents and yeshiva students with axes, hatchets and swords. Many dozens of others were seriously wounded or maimed.
**Therefore, this story is also dedicated to the memory and soul-elevation of my very good friend whom I grew up with, Zvi-Yehuda ben Yitzchak Elchanan & Esther Saks, who loyally flew in from Costa Rica to be my "chaperone" during the week before my wedding. He also stayed a few days after, during which he helped me to toyvel (immerse) all the new dishes, pots, and cutlery-an act which took us over an hour standing naked up to our waists in a men's mikveh, and which I am convinced had a significant influence on his soon after becoming mitzvah-observant! -Y.T.
