Parsha Balak, Where is exit 5? Euphoria, news

Parsha Balak

In all the years in the wilderness and even in Egypt, the attacks on Moshe were physical in nature. I will not let you go, up against the sea and the Egyptians, no water, no bread, no meat, etc. Perhaps you might say that Korach was not so much physical in nature but spiritual challenge. The challenge was from within and not an existential theat. Now came Balak and Bilaam come with a spiritual attack that was a threat.

Some Rabbis are worried about smart phones and the internet and yes they do waste Torah Time. But fighting technology is like trying to push a horse and buggy vs. a motorcar. There should be certain guidelines and limits but one cannot fight everything.

Today we are fighting perhaps pure evil of socialist atheists pushing ban the police producing chaos vs. law and order. Pushing a WOKE and crazy sexuality agenda. They are the real Bilaams and Balaks of today. We have plenty of licentious behavior but no Pinchas today. We are in bad straits. The Avoda Zara today is not Baal Peor but by another name. There is one group of islands in the sea of corruption it is Torah and the Jewish Home. There is a spiritual storm outside.

Oh yes, Greta Thunberg predicted the end of the world last week. I am not certain about it but to all appearances, we seem to be in Olam HaZeh and not Olam HaBa.

22:2 And Balak the son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorites. 3 And Moab was sore afraid of the people, because they were many; and Moab was overcome with dread because of the children of Israel.

Balak saw what happened to the Amorites who had defeat Ammon and was scared. At least 2,000,000 Bnei Yisrael were on his border. He used magic to see his future that Yisrael will defeat him. But had he been smart, he would have negotiated a peaceful alliance. Relying on divination based on the power of Tuma was not a good idea.

4 And Moab said unto the elders of Midian: 'Now will this multitude lick up all that is round about us, as the ox licks up the grass of the field.'--And Balak the son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time.—

He had an alliance with Midian. Now Yisro was from a different part of Midian so they must have been a series of nomadic families and this Midian was filled with idols.

5 And he sent messengers unto Balaam the son of Beor, to Pethor, which is by the River, to the land of the children of his people, to call him, saying: 'Behold, there is a people come out from Egypt; behold, they cover the face of the earth, and they abide over against me.

Rabbi Pinchas Winston Shlita torah.org and pinchasw@thirtysix.org THE ZOHAR EXPLAINS that the combination of the names of Balak and Bilaam provide the letters for two other words: Bavel (Babylonia) and Amalek. This of course is not random gematria, but a hint to the spiritual origin of both characters, and how their unholy alliance actualized the reality of Amalek.

It’s like taking two inert chemicals and combining them to make an explosive. Balak and Bilaam on their own were bad enough. But together, they could have destroyed the entire Jewish people had God not neutralized them. We thank God to this very day for that great miracle.

But then again, who brought Balak and Bilaam together in the first place if not God Himself? That took a different kind of “miracle”:

“But did they not always hate each other, as it says, ‘who defeated Midian in the field of Moav’ (Beresheis 36:35), when Midian came against Moav in battle? However, because of their mutual fear of the Jewish people they made peace with each other.” (Rashi, Bamidbar 22:4)

6 Come now therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people; for they are too mighty for me; peradventure I shall prevail, that we may smite them, and that I may drive them out of the land; for I know that he whom thou blesses is blessed, and he whom thou curse is cursed.'

Bilaam was one of the advisors of Pharaoh along with Iyob and Yisro. He had advised to drown the babies as he saw the waters of Meribah. Yisro advised Pharaoh to be kind to Yisrael and Iyob fearing Bilaam and Pharaoh upon seeing the two together fled. He got punished as written in Sefer Iyob for if he had advised like Yisro it is likely that Pharaoh would never have thrown the babies in the Nile and in the future another Pharaoh would lose his horses and riders in the sea.

7 And the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the rewards of divination in their hand; and they came unto Balaam, and spoke unto him the words of Balak. 8 And he said unto them: 'Lodge here this night, and I will bring you back word, as the LORD may speak unto me'; and the princes of Moab abode with Balaam.

It appears to me, Bilaam was on a level of having an ‘out of body’ experience and communicating with G-D almost at will. Similar to the documented stories of Edgar Cayce in the World War II era.

9 And God came unto Balaam, and said: 'What men are these with thee?' 10 And Balaam said unto God: 'Balak the son of Zippor, king of Moab, hath sent unto me [saying]: 11 Behold the people that is come out of Egypt, it covers the face of the earth; now, come curse me them; peradventure I shall be able to fight against them, and shall drive them out.' 12 And God said unto Balaam: 'Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.'

The truth will set you free and save your life. Why the airs of not going and then later go? Simply tell the delegation make a peace treaty with them for the L-RD said: 'Thou shalt not go with them; thou shalt not curse the people; for they are blessed.' But his blind antisemitism from 121years before when the astrologers predicted Moshe’s birth closed his eyes and logic channels.

13 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and said unto the princes of Balak: 'Get you into your land; for the LORD refuses to give me leave to go with you.'

He failed to indicate the full extent of a capital NO but made is so that not just now.

14 And the princes of Moab rose up, and they went unto Balak, and said: 'Balaam refuses to come with us.' 15 And Balak sent yet again princes, more, and more honorable than they. 16 And they came to Balaam, and said to him: 'Thus saith Balak the son of Zippor: Let nothing, I pray thee, hinder thee from coming unto me; 17 for I will promote thee unto very great honor, and whatsoever thou say unto me I will do; come therefore, I pray thee, curse me this people.' 18 And Balaam answered and said unto the servants of Balak: 'If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD my God, to do anything, small or great.

This was his last chance to make a peace treaty with Israel for them. It would have saved many dead from the tribe of Shimon and perhaps others on idolatry of Baal Peor. It would have saved his own life, Balak’s life and thousands from Midian and some from Moav.

19 Now therefore, I pray you, tarry ye also here this night, that I may know what the LORD will speak unto me more.' 20 And God came unto Balaam at night, and said unto him: 'If the men are come to call thee, rise up, go with them; but only the word which I speak unto thee, that shalt thou do.'

G-D wants to teach Bilaam a lesson that it is not his power that does anything but the will of G-D. Ok you want to sin, then go but I will limit you but good.

21 And Balaam rose up in the morning, and saddled his ass, and went with the princes of Moab. 22 And God's anger was kindled because he went; and the angel of the LORD placed himself in the way for an adversary against him.--Now he was riding upon his ass, and his two servants were with him.—

I am wondering if the princes were riding Arabian Steeds? Why with all their presents is he riding a female donkey? The answer appears to be two-fold. First, he wanted a Messianic Appearance of riding a white female donkey. Secondly, according to the Midrash and conversation of the donkey to Bilaam, she acted with him like a wife all these years.

23 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and the ass turned aside out of the way, and went into the field; and Balaam smote the ass, to turn her into the way.

She could see the Angel but not the ‘prophet’.

24 Then the angel of the LORD stood in a hollow way between the vineyards, a fence being on this side, and a fence on that side.

This fence on the path was made from Gal-Ed of Yacov and Lavan. This was the border of Lavan towards Eretz Yisrael and crossing that area constituted a violation of the treaty.

25 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD, and she thrust herself unto the wall, and crushed Balaam's foot against the wall; and he smote her again.

Again he did not see that the Angel was there.

26 And the angel of the LORD went further, and stood in a narrow place, where was no way to turn either to the right hand or to the left. 27 And the ass saw the angel of the LORD, and she lay down under Balaam; and Balaam's anger was kindled, and he smote the ass with his staff.

This time he smote her with his staff as he was furious.

28 And the LORD opened the mouth of the ass, and she said unto Balaam: 'What have I done unto thee, that thou hast smitten me these three times?'

These three Regelim a hit to the three festivals of Yisrael.

29 And Balaam said unto the ass: 'Because thou hast mocked me; I would there were a sword in my hand, for now I had killed thee.' 30 And the ass said unto Balaam: 'Am not I your ass, upon which thou hast ridden all thy lifelong unto this day? was I ever want to do so unto thee?'

The previous sentence is a hint of bestiality encounter. In all our years together have I ever done something like this?

And he said: 'Nay.' 31 Then the LORD opened the eyes of Balaam, and he saw the angel of the LORD standing in the way, with his sword drawn in his hand; and he bowed his head, and fell on his face.

You are the big to do ‘prophet’ coming to curse a people that did nothing to you and you cannot even come up with an answer to a jackass!

32 And the angel of the LORD said unto him: 'Wherefore hast thou smitten thine ass these three times? behold, I am come forth for an adversary, because thy way is contrary unto me;

You are going against the L-RD and HIS PEOPLE.

33 and the ass saw me, and turned aside before me these three times; unless she had turned aside from me, surely now I had even slain thee, and saved her alive.'

Because the donkey spoke, she died on the spot as that was not the nature of the donkey.

34 And Balaam said unto the angel of the LORD: 'I have sinned; for I knew not that thou stood in the way against me; now therefore, if it displease thee, I will get me back.'

You were told in the beginning that the people were blessed and had you told this to Balak, this whole Parsha could have been avoided.

35 And the angel of the LORD said unto Balaam: 'Go with the men; but only the word that I shall speak unto thee, that thou shalt speak.' So, Balaam went with the princes of Balak.

I have a funny feeling that these people neither heard the donkey or saw the Angel for they might have gotten a hint of what G-D wanted.

36 And when Balak heard that Balaam was come, he went out to meet him unto Ir-moab, which is on the border of Arnon, which is in the utmost part of the border. 37 And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Did I not earnestly send unto thee to call thee? wherefore came thou not unto me? am I not able indeed to promote thee to honor?'

Why didn’t you come the first time?

38 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Lo, I am come unto thee; have I now any power at all to speak anything? the word that God puts in my mouth, that shall I speak.'

After seeing the Angel he pulls no punches and speaks the truth but will do his best to find the minutes when G-D gets angry to curse the Bnei Yisrael. But surprise-surprise no anger.

39 And Balaam went with Balak, and they came unto Kiriath-huzoth. 40 And Balak sacrificed oxen and sheep, and sent to Balaam, and to the princes that were with him. 41 And it came to pass in the morning that Balak took Balaam, and brought him up into Bamoth-baal, and he saw from thence the utmost part of the people. 23:1 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.' 2 And Balak did as Balaam had spoken; and Balak and Balaam offered on every altar a bullock and a ram. 3 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Stand by thy burnt-offering, and I will go; peradventure the LORD will come to meet me; and whatsoever He shows me I will tell thee.' And he went to a bare height. 4 And God met Balaam; and he said unto Him: 'I have prepared the seven altars, and I have offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar.' 5 And the LORD put a word in Balaam's mouth, and said: 'Return unto Balak, and thus thou shalt speak.' 6 And he returned unto him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt-offering, he, and all the princes of Moab. 7 And he took up his parable, and said: From Aram Balak bringeth me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the East: 'Come, curse me Jacob, and come, execrate Israel.' 8 How shall I curse, whom God hath not cursed? And how shall I execrate, whom the LORD hath not execrated? … 11 And Balak said unto Balaam: 'What hast thou done unto me? I took thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast blessed them altogether.' 12 And he answered and said: 'Must I not take heed to speak that which the LORD puts in my mouth?' 13 And Balak said unto him: 'Come, I pray thee, with me unto another place, from whence thou mayest see them; thou shalt see but the utmost part of them, and shalt not see them all; and curse me them from thence.' 14 And he took him into the field of Zophim, to the top of Pisgah, and built seven altars, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar. 15 And he said unto Balak: 'Stand here by thy burnt-offering, while I go toward a meeting yonder.' 16 And the LORD met Balaam, and put a word in his mouth, and said: 'Return unto Balak, and thus shalt thou speak.' 17 And he came to him, and, lo, he stood by his burnt-offering, and the princes of Moab with him. And Balak said unto him: 'What hath the LORD spoken?' 18 And he took up his parable, and said: Arise, Balak, and hear; give ear unto me, thou son of Zippor: 19 God is not a man, that He should lie; neither the son of man, that He should repent: when He hath said, will He not do it? or when He hath spoken, will He not make it good? 20 Behold, I am bidden to bless; and when He hath blessed, I cannot call it back.  … 25 And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Neither curse them at all, nor bless them at all.' 26 But Balaam answered and said unto Balak: 'Told not I thee, saying: All that the LORD speak, that I must do?' 27 And Balak said unto Balaam: 'Come now, I will take thee unto another place; peradventure it will please God that thou mayest curse me them from thence.'

Balak after two blessings and hearing that the people are blessed, isn’t it time to stop being like this?

28 And Balak took Balaam unto the top of Peor, that looks down upon the desert. 29 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Build me here seven altars, and prepare me here seven bullocks and seven rams.' 30 And Balak did as Balaam had said, and offered up a bullock and a ram on every altar. 24:1 And when Balaam saw that it pleased the LORD to bless Israel, he went not, as at the other times, to meet with enchantments, but he set his face toward the wilderness.

As smart as Balak was, his hatred blinded him. Now Bilaam released where G-D was taking him and did not even try to think about cursing this time.

2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes, and he saw Israel dwelling tribe by tribe; and the spirit of God came upon him. … 5 How goodly are thy tents, O Jacob, thy dwellings, O Israel!  Blessed be every one that blesses thee, and cursed be every one that curses thee. 10 And Balak's anger was kindled against Balaam, and he smote his hands together; and Balak said unto Balaam: 'I called thee to curse mine enemies, and, behold, thou hast altogether blessed them these three times.

Balak at this point is wringing his hands.

11 Therefore now flee thou to thy place; I thought to promote thee unto great honor; but, lo, the LORD hath kept thee back from honor.' 12 And Balaam said unto Balak: 'Spoke I not also to thy messengers that thou didst send unto me, saying: 13 If Balak would give me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of the LORD, to do either good or bad of mine own mind; what the LORD speaks, that will I speak?

I did not deceive you but warned you at the start that what G-D tells me to prophesize, I prophesize.

14 And now, behold, I go unto my people; come, and I will announce to thee what this people shall do to thy people in the end of days.'

This is what you can do to them. The L-RD hates lewdness and idolatry. If you get them to do both, then they are vulnerable.

… 25 And Balaam rose up, and went and returned to his place; and Balak also went his way.

25:1 And Israel abode in Shittim, and the people began to commit harlotry with the daughters of Moab. 2 And they called the people unto the sacrifices of their gods; and the people did eat, and bowed down to their gods. 3 And Israel joined himself unto the Baal of Peor; and the anger of the LORD was kindled against Israel. 4 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Take all the chiefs of the people, and hang them up unto the LORD in face of the sun, that the fierce anger of the LORD may turn away from Israel.' 5 And Moses said unto the judges of Israel: 'Slay ye everyone his men that have joined themselves unto the Baal of Peor.'

The cult of Baal Peor was a fertility cult and the worship was to defecate and to wet the area in front of the idol basically a public toilet without privacy.

6 And, behold, one of the children of Israel came and brought unto his brethren a Midian woman in the sight of Moses, and in the sight of all the congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting.

Zimri was so delighted in the pleasure he got, without conversion or repentance, took Cozbi into his tent to continue onwards his lust in front to all. He told Moshe you married a Midian Woman, I too am taking one. Suddenly, humble Moshe had no answer. But Pinchas did.

7 And when Phinehas, the son of Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, saw it, he rose up from the midst of the congregation, and took a spear in his hand. 8 And he went after the man of Israel into the chamber, and thrust both of them through, the man of Israel, and the woman through her belly. So, the plague was stayed from the children of Israel. 9 And those that died by the plague were twenty and four thousand.

Where oh where is exit 5? By Yerachmiel Tilles

http://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5783/1333-40.html

Renowned as much for his scholarship as for his holiness, the leader and spiritual head of tens of thousands of Jews in the United States, Israel, and around the world, the Sanzer Rebbe [Rabbi Yekutiel-Yehuda Halberstam], was a unique figure in his generation. People from around the world came to him for advice and blessings, which always proved effective.

I [Rabbi David Pinto] am not a Sanzer Chasid. I simply believe in each Tzadik who has worked for Judaism. Even if a regular individual helps people to do teshuvah by showing them the true and right path to follow, he has my respect and admiration.

Yet if truth be known, I am attached to the Sanzer Tzadik, and this has to do with what happened to me in 1984 in New York City.

It was a Tuesday during the winter. On that day I was supposed to meet the Sanzer Rebbe at his office in Union City, New Jersey, at 9 pm, after the evening prayer. However, during the afternoon, I was told that a famous singer, Bob Dylan, wanted to see me at around 8 pm, just before his scheduled departure for Germany, where thousands of fans awaited him at a concert. He had heard of me from an important figure who often came to see me.

I had been planning on leaving to see the Sanzer Rebbe at around 7:30 pm (taking into account the distance from where I was staying and also the traffic), hence my dilemma and uncertainty over this turn of events. If I missed my meeting with the Sanzer Rebbe, who knew when another such occasion would arise?

On the other hand, if I refused to meet Bob Dylan, a [non-observant] Jewish singer capable of attracting hundreds of thousands of people by his music, he would feel offended. Instead of doing teshuvah, he would be angry with a rabbi who had brushed him aside. After thinking it over carefully, I decided to forgo my meeting with the Sanzer Rebbe.

Thus, on that night I met Bob Dylan, followed by a crowd of curious onlookers. They were in disbelief at the thought that a rabbi and a singer such as Bob Dylan could have a private talk. We spoke about Judaism for about two hours, and since that time, thank G-d, we have remained good friends and in close contact. In fact, during his next trip to Paris, he paid a visit to our yeshiva.

Bob Dylan left at around 10 pm. At that point I wondered if I was going to completely miss meeting with the Sanzer Rebbe or perhaps, seeing that I had not yet arrived, the Tzadik was still waiting for me.

I said to my four friends who were with me at the time, "Let's go to Union City where the Sanzer Rebbe lives. If we manage to see him, so much the better. If not, the Al-mighty will remember the journey we undertook in honor of the Tzadik. As for the Tzadik himself, I think he won't be upset at us or offended when his secretary tells him that we were late because of special circumstances."

We got into a car and left. The shortest way to Union City was to get off the Jersey Turnpike at Exit 5. We saw Exit 1, then Exit 2, Exit 3, and finally Exit 4. But then we saw Exit 6!

At first, we thought that this was just a simple mistake, so we hastily turned back. I told the driver to drive slowly this time and to pay special attention to the exits.

Yet, as if G-d had decided to testing us by enclosing us on this highway, the same thing happened once again: We could not find Exit 5! We asked for directions from someone working in a tollbooth, and he said sharply, "Are you blind or what? Exit 5 is written in huge letters!"

After the third unsuccessful try, I said to the driver: "We'll try a last attempt to make it to Union City. If, out of respect for the Sanzer Rebbe, the holy One opens our eyes and we manage to find Exit 5, good. If not, this will mean that the Tzadik is upset at us and G-d does not want such a meeting to take place. In that case, we won't have the merit of seeing the face of the Tzadik or taking hold of his saintly hands and kissing them," as we Sephardim do when in the presence of a Rebbe or Tzadik.

Once again, we turned back and began counting each exit, with the hope of spotting Exit 5. After having passed Exit 4, I said to my friends: "Now let's all say aloud: 'May Rabbi Chaim of Sanz, the Sanz-Klausenberg Rebbe, forgive us and open our eyes - all five of us - so we can see Exit 5!'"

At that exact moment, a miracle happened there; from afar we saw the sign indicating Exit 5! As soon as we saw it, we gave free reign to our joy - as if blind men had regained their sight - and we began to sing with all our hearts.

From then on, it did not take long to reach the great Sanz Synagogue in Union City. We were welcomed at the entrance by the Rebbe's special secretary, who informed us that the Rebbe was waiting for us in his office, at which point our joy multiplied immensely! Thank G-d, the Rebbe was not upset with us in the least for being three and a half hours late.

We quickly ascended to the second floor, where hundreds of chasidim were awaiting our arrival, intrigued and curious to know why their Rebbe was waiting in his office for so long.

It is not difficult to imagine the emotion that I felt when I finally found myself before the Tzadik. With his face like that of an angel, illuminated as it was by the Shechina [the Divine Presence], and the majesty that emanated from his persona, he completely radiated a sacred splendor.

When I kissed his sacred hands, the memory of my holy ancestors - with Rabbi Haim Pinto ["the Great" 1749-1845], at their head - came to mind, and I had the feeling that I was with my saintly grandfather Rabbi Hayyim Pinto ["the Small" 1855 -1937].

The Sanzer Rebbe proceeded to ask me many questions about Rabbi Haim Pinto, which I answered by relating various stories concerning my holy ancestors. I quickly realized that the Sanzer Rebbe was perfectly familiar with the life and great deeds of the illustrious Rabbi Haim Pinto. In fact, one of the Sanzer Rebbe's disciples was originally from Morocco, specifically Mogador - the city of my great-great-grandfather, and each Shabbat he told his Rebbe of the miracles that Rabbi Haim Pinto had performed.

When it came time to leave, I once again kissed the sacred hands of the Rebbe, and then we left, as happy as if we had been at the foot of Mount Sinai to receive the Torah and gaze at the face of the Shechina.

Today, I still don't know why G-d blocked our way on that night, yet there is one thing I do know: the holy One has the power to close anyone's eyes, even if he has perfect sight.

To conclude, I can only highly recommend that all those traveling to Netanya should go and pray - dressed modestly of course, not wearing mini-skirts nor pants (women), nor shorts (men) - by the grave of the Tzadik of Sanz, may his merit protect us all. Amen.

Connection: The 9th of the Jewish month of Tammuz is the 29th yahrzeit of the Sanz-Klausenberg Rebbe.

Editor's note:
The Lubavitcher Rebbe passed on 3 Tammuz 5754 [1994] on Saturday night, the beginning of the week. The Sanzer departed on 9 Tammuz, on Shabbat Day, the conclusion of the same week. Coincidence? (It is known they had a close relationship.)

Biographical notes:
Rabbi Yekusiel-Yehudah Halberstam, the Klausenberger Rebbe, [Shabbat, 10 Shvat 5665 - Shabbat, 9 Tammuz 5754 (January 10, 1905 - June 18, 1994)], was a Holocaust survivor who also became the post-war Rebbe of the Sanz Chassidim. One of the foremost Chasidic leaders of his generation, he is best known for his revitalization of the study of Talmud through "Mifal HaShas" and the building of a hospital, Laniado, in Netanya, that functions at the highest standards of Jewish law and medical practice.

Rabbi David-Chananya Pinto (b. 1950) is the scion of a well-known rabbinical family, whose roots reach back 450+ years to Rabbi Chaim Vital, the main disciple of the "Holy Ari," Rabbi Yitzchak Luria, in 16th-century Safed. His father, Rabbi Moshe-Aharon Pinto (1912-1985), immigrated from Morocco to Israel (where is name became associated with miracles and thousands of Jews flocked to his home in Ashdod for blessings). Rabbi David remained in France, where he still lives. He currently has a large following and has established dozens of educational institutions throughout the Jewish world, named after his holy ancestors.

Sometimes one is surprised. In Kismet there is a song “night of my nights” about the young Calif that wants to marry his love. My third oldest grandchild is 23. He is a Yeshiva Type pretty quiet. He is like a young version of Rav Gershon Edelstein quit, serious with his head it a book with the exception that he has a driver’s license.

Yesterday evening before sunset, 10th of Tammuz, he married. I told him that he needs a big smile. Guess what he was in Euphoria looked like the Lubavitcher Rebbe at a Farbrengen (German spelling is Ver instead of Far). He was conducting the singing standing on chairs and jumping. It was such fun. This reminded me of Gemara Sukkos of the Sages dancing during the drawing of water on Sukkos about the tremendous  joy and euphoria.
