Parsha Korach
Moshe hoped that the
incident with the spies would finally calm down the people for the next 38 to
39years and the generation of rebellion and desire to return to Egypt would
end. I cannot tell a lie, my grandparents who fled Hitler always talked about
how wonderful life was in Austria under Kaiser Franz Yosef. So, I do have some
understanding into the forgetfulness of the bad things about slavery and the
love for melons, cucumbers and more that they had in Egypt. But that was behind
them after the L-RD struck down the Rebels.
Still there was one more
lingering challenge to Moshe. The challenge was that of jealousy and the idea
of “I deserve this because …”. There were members of the Tribe of Reuven and
even a first cousin of Moshe who felt left out by order of birth. They
convinced themselves of being part of the holy nation and even closer to
leadership in birth order. It would only be generations later that the Shmuel
HaNovi (aka the builder of the kingship would over look the foundation stone
aka Dovid) – Tehillim 118:22 “The stone that the builders rejected has become
the cornerstone.” Dovid was the youngest of the brothers and did not go out to
be a soldier as he was too busy tending his father’s sheep and had no military
training. It was he who defeated and killed the Plishtim Giant despite being
about 5’2” or 162cm in height. Moshe was the last person with ambition to be a
leader, he was chosen like Dovid, the baby in the family.
According to Rabbi Pinchas Winston Shlita,
instead of the wife of Korach being humbler and more logical like Mrs. On ben
Peleth below, she had ambitions and jealousy. Remember that when Leviim was
consecrated, they were shaved bald. Korach and bald {Korayach} are related. The name itself has the same letters that spell “bald,” perhaps
given to him at birth as a prophecy of how one day his being shaven bald would
lead to his rebellion and demise. According to Sha’ar HaGilgulim, parents
receive Ruach HaKodesh, Divine Inspiration, when naming their children because,
who names their child Korach?
According to the Gemara, this is what happened: “Korach’s
wife said to him: ‘See what Moshe is doing. He is the king, he appointed his
brother High Priest, and he appointed his brother’s son’s deputy
priests…Furthermore, he shears your hair and waves you as if you are as
insignificant as excrement, as though he set his sights on your hair and wishes
you to be shaven and unsightly.’” (Sanhedrin 110a)
It may have also been a warning to Korach about his
way of thinking and, to all the generations that have since followed about such
a way of thinking. To appreciate this, you have to first appreciate the
spiritual meaning of hair. It is not a multi-billion-dollar industry for no
reason…
The physical world is the way it is because of the
spiritual world. Just like a child is a replication of its parents because of
inherited genes, likewise the physical world is always just the physical
actualization of spiritual potential. Everything begins with an abstract idea,
and everything is made of Divine light, no matter how physical or profane it
may seem to us.
Man, the centerpiece of God’s creating, has a head,
torso, and legs, each with its own sub-parts. The spiritual world is made up
countless systems of 10 Sefiros each, the spiritual mechanism God created to
filter and transfer His light around to make and maintain Creation. The
Sefiros, we are told, are spiritually organized in the physical form of a man.
Actually, it’s the other way around, since the
Sefiros came before man, and they gave rise to him. God may have had man in
mind when He first created and laid out the Sefiros, but they were already structured
that way long before man came along. This also helps to create a more
“intimate” bond between man and the spiritual world, from which he draws
spiritual light to physically live.
Here’s the reason for all of this. Just like humans
have hair, so is there a reality of hair in the Sefiros. And though hair
performs an important physical function on a person, it performs an important
spiritual function in the Sefiros. The Hebrew word for hair is sa’ar, but its
letters (Shin-Ayin-Reish) are the same as sha’ar, which means “gate,” and that
is obviously not a coincidence. The question is, how not?
PHYSICAL HAIR IS a protein filament that grows from
follicles found in the dermis. Hair is one of the defining characteristics of
mammals. The human body, apart from areas of glabrous skin, is covered in
follicles which produce thick terminal and fine vellus hair.” (Wikipedia)
“The center of the hair is called the medulla. It can
be a hollow tube, or filled with cells. In some people the medulla is absent,
in others it is fragmented, or segmented, and in others it is continuous or
even doubled. The medulla can contain pigment granules or be unpigmented.” (The
Study of Hair, National Geographic Learning)
That’s a little technical. In the Sefiros, the hair
is made from Divine light and it acts as pipelines for Divine light. But every
time Divine light moves it tends to change levels, and that requires some
constriction and filtering. In this way, sa’ar acts like a sha’ar, like a gate
between two areas, in this case an upper level and the one below it.
Ultimately, Divine light is knowledge and awareness.
Yes, it makes all of Creation and runs history, but the point of all of
Creation and history is to know and be aware of God. In this respect, all that
exists and all that occurs is really a message to be deciphered about God, as
it says: “God looked down from heaven upon the sons of men to see whether there
is a man of understanding, who seeks God” (Tehillim 53:3).
On the level of Arich Anpin, the highest level of Creation,
there are 13 hairs of light that come out from the top of the “head,” and what
is called the Yud-Gimmel Tikunei Dikna, or the “13 Rectifications of the
Beard.” Basically, there are 13 sections to a beard, some of which do not have
hair, like the channel under the nose. They are two different means for
delivering Divine light to lower levels, but since the beard is lower than the
hair on top of the head, it is the main one.
It is said that a beard tends to reveal on the
outside what is hidden on the inside of a person, which is why people who are
spiritual tend to let their beards grow. It just seems more natural and less
fashionable, very down to earth. In the Sefiros this is definitely the case
because until the beard, most of the light remained internal. The outer beard
is the revelation of inner light.
It is similar with respect to hair on the head. How a
person wears their hair is often an indication of their level of spirituality.
Modest people wear their hair modestly. People who want to attract attention
spend a lot of time and money on their hair to help them do that. Their yetzer
hara makes them do that. We can size a person up somewhat before even meeting
them just by the look of their hair.
THE LONG AND short of it is that, conceptually hair
is a holy thing, not so much because of what it is, but because of what it
represents. Practically speaking, hair can be the way a person reveals their
spiritual inside to the outside world, or it can be a stumbling block for the
person themself and others.
Kabbalistically, sa’ar is a sha’ar between two realms
to increase the revelation of Divine light. Conceptually, it represents a
gateway between two approaches to life, one that leads to increased Divine
light and understanding, or one that leads away from it. It is one thing to
look presentable, but something very different to purposely draw attention to
your physical appearance.
What essentially happened, the animal soul of the body
over took the DIVINE gateway of light for Korach. Korach was rich in his day
like men similar to Musk, Bezos or Gates today. Wealth and power also blinded
him.
16:1 Now Korah, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of
Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth,
sons of Reuben, took men; 2 and they rose up in face of Moses, with
certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty men; they were princes
of the congregation, the elect men of the assembly, men of
renown; 3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against
Aaron, and said unto them: 'Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the
congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them; wherefore
then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?'
You were never elected to lead by the Congregation.
The Leviim had no primaries to elect you! The error of the rebels was to blind
themselves by lust for power to the fact that it was HASHEM Yisborach that
chose Moshe and Aaron. Rabbi Yosef ben Porat says that the other disputes where
no names were mentioned were with ideology such as food, or no water or fear of
giants by the people. But this time it was personal by Korah, Dathan and
others.
4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his
face. 5 And he spoke unto Korah and unto all his company, saying: 'In
the morning the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him
to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near
unto Him.
Do you want to know whom HASHEM wants? Then do
this.
6 This do: take you censors, Korah, and all
his company; 7 and put fire therein, and put incense upon them before
the LORD to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he
shall be holy; ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.'
But for this meeting with the censors, Korach
will listen to Moshe. Moshe is trying to remind him that he is a Levi with a
special holiness and work in the Mishkan.
8 And Moses said unto Korah: 'Hear now, ye
sons of Levi: 9 is it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel
hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to
Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before
the congregation to minister unto them; 10 and that He hath brought
thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and will ye seek
the priesthood also?
Be happy with your position.
11 Therefore thou and all thy company that
are gathered together against the LORD--; and as to Aaron, what is he that ye
murmur against him?'
You are already special with holy work for HASHEM
why complain?
12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram,
the sons of Eliab; and they said: 'We will not come up; 13 is it a
small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and
honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a
prince over us?
You have taken us out of a land flowing with milk
and honey. Suddenly, slavery was not bitter but sweet like honey.
14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a
land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and
vineyards; wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.'
You have not and will not bring us into a land
full of milk and honey. We do not accept your leadership and will not come up.
15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto
the LORD: 'Respect not Thou their offering; I have not taken one ass from them,
neither have I hurt one of them.'
Their Chutzpa has gotten to Moshe. He prayers
that the L-RD will not accept their offering as he never did anything to hurt
them, take advantage of his power ore even tax them.
16 And Moses said unto Korah: 'Be thou and
all thy congregation before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron,
to-morrow; 17 and take ye every man his fire-pan, and put incense
upon them, and bring ye before the LORD every man his fire-pan, two hundred and
fifty fire-pans; thou also, and Aaron, each his fire-pan.'
You are so holy then take your fire-pans and
incense and you want to grow personally and Korach wants to be king with Aaron
as Cohain Gadol and Moshe as Novi.
18 And they took every man his fire-pan, and
put fire in them, and laid incense thereon, and stood at the door of the tent
of meeting with Moses and Aaron. 19 And Korah assembled all the
congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory
of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation. 20 And the LORD spoke
unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 21 'Separate yourselves from among
this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.'
HASHEM wanted to destroy the entire nation.
22 And they fell upon their faces, and said:
'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt Thou
be wroth with all the congregation?' 23 And the LORD spoke unto
Moses, saying: 24 'Speak unto the congregation, saying: Get you up
from about the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.'
HASHEM accepts Moshe’s pray and commands him that
the Congregation should separate themselves from these rebels.
25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan
and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 And he spoke
unto the congregation, saying: 'Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these
wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be swept away in all their
sins.' 27 So they got them up from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and
Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of
their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones.
The rest of Reuven and even the sons of Korach
moved themselves away. Mrs. On ben Peleth got him drunk and was combing her
hair at the entrance to her tent as he slept in a drunken stupor and he is not
mentioned any more as a rebel. When he will awake he will hear the story of the
earth swallowing his buddies and bless his wife for saving him. Rabbi Yosef Ben
Porat Shlita explains the dispute as follows. When the Rebbe of Satmar fought
against the country of Israel and elections of the non-religious Zionists against
the Gadol HaDor Rav Aaron Kotler it was for the sake of heaven as Rav Kotler
used to travel to Eretz Yisrael to get people to vote for Agudath Yisrael. But
when Rav Kotler died, the Satmar Rebbe came to express the terrible loss to the
nation. Their dispute was for the sake or heaven. Rav Shach was against the Rebbe
of Lubavitch in fire and passion. But when the Rebbe had a stroke, Rav Shach
would fast and pray for the recovery of the Rebbe – as I heard from Rav
Yerachmiel Boyer Shlita. The dispute was for the sake of heaven. But not so
Korach and the others vs. Moshe the dispute was all personal for their own
individual glory.
28 And Moses said: 'Hereby ye shall know
that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them
of mine own mind. 29 If these men die the common death of all men, and
be visited after the visitation of all men, then the LORD hath not sent
Me. 30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her
mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down
alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the
LORD.'
Moshe is telling the congregation about what is
about to happen and Korah etc. hear this but did not listen and tragically they
did not repent.
31 And it came to pass, as he made an end of
speaking all these words, that the ground did cleave asunder that was under
them. 32 And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and
their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korah, and all their
goods. 33 So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive
into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the
assembly.
The children of Korach went with Moshe but the
households and tents of the others did not except for the righteous Mrs. On.
34 And all Israel that were round about them
fled at the cry of them; for they said: 'Lest the earth swallow us
up.' 35 And fire came forth from the LORD, and devoured the two
hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.
Fire came down from
heaven and the earth opened up and swallowed these men.
17:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 2 'Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he
take up the fire-pans out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for
they are become holy; 3 even the fire-pans of these men who have
sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a
covering of the altar--for they are become holy, because they were offered
before the LORD--that they may be a sign unto the children of
Israel.' 4 And Eleazar the priest took the brazen fire-pans, which
they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the
altar, 5 to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end
that no common man, that is not of the seed of Aaron, draw near to burn incense
before the LORD; that he fare not as Korah, and as his company; as the LORD
spoke unto him by the hand of Moses. 6 But on the morrow all the
congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against
Aaron, saying: 'Ye have killed the people of the LORD.' 7 And it came
to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron,
that they looked toward the tent of meeting; and, behold, the cloud covered it,
and the glory of the LORD appeared.
The people murmured against Moshe and blamed him to the 250
for the death of these men. As a result, a plague broke out and only Eleazar
going through the congregation with incense could ward off the Angel of Death
from taking them.
8 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of
meeting. 9 And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 10 'Get you up from among this congregation, that I may
consume them in a moment.' And they fell upon their faces. D
Please don’t take the congregation that strays after their
hearts but let them live.
11 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Take thy fire-pan, and
put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it
quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them; for there is wrath
gone out from the LORD: the plague is begun.' 12 And Aaron took as
Moses spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague
was begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for
the people. 13 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the
plague was stayed.
Those who were rebellious to such an extent that there was no
hope for them died, but those is inhaled the incense lived.
14 Now they that died by the plague were fourteen
thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of
Korah. 15 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of
meeting, and the plague was stayed.
The plague stayed. But it was now time for HASHEM to put the
dispute to rest once and for all time.
16 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 17 'Speak
unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers'
house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods;
thou shalt write every man's name upon his rod. 18 And thou shalt
write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi, for there shall be one rod for the
head of their fathers' houses. 19 And thou shalt lay them up in the
tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you. 20 And
it shall come to pass, that the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall bud; and
I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which
they murmur against you.'
After this miracle, I will still the people once and for all
that you are MY chosen leader of the nation.
21 And Moses spoke unto the children of Israel; and all
their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers'
houses, even twelve rods; and the rod of Aaron was among their
rods. 22 And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tent of
the testimony. 23 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went
into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of
Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and bore ripe
almonds.
Since Aaron had preformed miracles with this staff people
recognized it. But now a rod of dead and dried wood budded and produced ripe
almonds and if we were to find the lost Teva, we would see fresh ripe almonds
today as the miracle has not stopped.
24 And Moses brought out all the rods from before the
LORD unto all the children of Israel; and they looked, and took every man his
rod. 25 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Put back the rod of Aaron
before the testimony, to be kept there, for a token against the rebellious
children; that there may be made an end of their murmurings against Me, that
they die not.'
The heads of all the tribes saw this and acknowledged this as
a DIVINE Miracle and Sign.
26 Thus did Moses; as the LORD commanded him, so did
he. 27 And the children of Israel spoke unto Moses, saying: 'Behold,
we perish, we are undone, we are all undone. 28 Every one that cometh
near, that comes near unto the tabernacle of the LORD, is to die; shall we
wholly perish?'
Like the old pay phone, money would fall during the
conversation and one would release that he paid the price. So here the
spiritual version of the coin fell that the Leviim and Cohanim were selected by
G-D for their work.
18:1 And the
LORD said unto Aaron: 'Thou and thy sons and thy fathers' house with thee shall
bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear
the iniquity of your priesthood. 2 And thy brethren also, the tribe
of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou near with thee, that they may be
joined unto thee, and minister unto thee, thou and thy sons with thee being
before the tent of the testimony. 3 And they shall keep thy charge,
and the charge of all the Tent; only they shall not come nigh unto the holy
furniture and unto the altar, that they die not, neither they, nor ye.
Only a Cohain had the holiness to administer in the holiest
of places.
4 And they shall be joined unto thee, and keep the
charge of the tent of meeting, whatsoever the service of the Tent may be; but a
common man shall not draw nigh unto you.
Even a Levi and all the more so a regular Ben Yisrael could
not draw near.
5 And ye shall keep the charge of the holy things, and
the charge of the altar, that there be wrath no more upon the children of
Israel. 6 And I, behold, I have taken your brethren the Levites from
among the children of Israel; for you they are given as a gift unto the LORD,
to do the service of the tent of meeting. 7 And thou and thy sons
with thee shall keep your priesthood in everything that pertains to the altar,
and to that within the veil; and ye shall serve; I give you the priesthood as a
service of gift; and the common man that draws nigh shall be put to
death.'
Very often the people breaching the area died immediately
without ever having to be put to death. You may ask me, “How is it that the
Babylonians, Greeks and Romans entered these places and did not die?” The
answer is that once the Shechina removes her presence from the holy objects,
they are like profane objects and non-Yisrael people can touch them.
8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron: 'And I, behold, I have
given thee the charge of My heave-offerings; even of all the hallowed things of
the children of Israel unto thee have I given them for a consecrated portion,
and to thy sons, as a due forever.
This was given to the Cohanim.
9 This shall be thine of the most holy things, reserved
from the fire: every offering of theirs, even every meal-offering of theirs,
and every sin-offering of theirs, and every guilt-offering of theirs, which
they may render unto Me, shall be most holy for thee and for thy
sons. 10 In a most holy place shalt thou eat thereof; every male may
eat thereof; it shall be holy unto thee. 11 And this is thine: the
heave-offering of their gift, even all the wave-offerings of the children of
Israel; I have given them unto thee, and to thy sons and to thy daughters with
thee, as a due for ever; every one that is clean in thy house may eat
thereof. 12 All the best of the oil, and all the best of the wine,
and of the corn, the first part of them which they give unto the LORD, to thee
have I given them. 13 The first-ripe fruits of all that is in their
land, which they bring unto the LORD, shall be thine; every one that is clean
in thy house may eat thereof.
This has been given to the Cohanim forever.
14 Everything devoted in Israel shall be
thine. 15 Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh which they
offer unto the LORD, both of man and beast, shall be thine; howbeit the
first-born of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts
shalt thou redeem. 16 And their redemption-money--from a month old
shalt thou redeem them--shall be, according to thy valuation, five shekels of
silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary--the same is twenty gerahs.
Bechorim both of man and non-kosher beasts shall be redeemed.
17 But the firstling of an ox, or the firstling of a
sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou
shalt dash their blood against the altar, and shalt make their fat smoke for an
offering made by fire, for a sweet savor unto the LORD. 18 And the
flesh of them shall be thine, as the wave-breast and as the right thigh, it
shall be thine.
The Bechor of clean animals belongs to the Cohain for eating
but must be put on the Mizbayach as a Korban.
19 All the heave-offerings of the holy things, which the
children of Israel offer unto the LORD, have I given thee, and thy sons and thy
daughters with thee, as a due for ever; it is an everlasting covenant of salt
before the LORD unto thee and to thy seed with thee.' 20 And the LORD
said unto Aaron: 'Thou shalt have no inheritance in their land, neither shalt
thou have any portion among them; I am thy portion and thine inheritance among
the children of Israel.
HASHEM concludes now what belongs to the Cohain and then
starts on what the Levi does and what the Levi receives.
21 And unto the children of Levi, behold, I have given
all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which
they serve, even the service of the tent of meeting. 22 And
henceforth the children of Israel shall not come nigh the tent of meeting, lest
they bear sin, and die. 23 But the Levites alone shall do the service
of the tent of meeting, and they shall bear their iniquity; it shall be a
statute forever throughout your generations, and among the children of Israel
they shall have no inheritance. 24 For the tithe of the children of
Israel, which they set apart as a gift unto the LORD, I have given to the
Levites for an inheritance; therefore I have said unto them: Among the children
of Israel they shall have no inheritance.'
Actually, because of the curse of Yacov when Shimon and Levi
killed off the males of Shechem. The Leviim were dispersed among the tribes in
24 cities.
25 And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 26 'Moreover thou shalt speak unto the Levites, and say unto
them: When ye take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you
from them for your inheritance, then ye shall set apart of it a gift for the
LORD, even a tithe of the tithe. 27 And the gift which ye set apart
shall be reckoned unto you, as though it were the corn of the threshing-floor,
and as the fulness of the wine-press. 28 Thus ye also shall set apart
a gift unto the LORD of all your tithes, which ye receive of the children of
Israel; and thereof ye shall give the gift which is set apart unto the LORD to
Aaron the priest.
A farmer is required to give Teruma Gadolah to
the Cohanim this is 1% or more of his crops. The next 10% of the original crop
is given to the Levi as Maaser. The Levi is required to give 10% of this or a
whole 1% of the original crop. This leaves the Cohanim, with a total of 2% of
the crops and 9% to the Leviim. The rest is about 2% plus of the original crops
turns into the corners of the field (Peah) or forgotten sheaves (Shichfa) of
Lechkes of walking onwards or the sheaf falling behind.
29 Out of all that is given you ye shall set apart all
of that which is due unto the LORD, of all the best thereof, even the hallowed
part thereof out of it. 30 Therefore thou shalt say unto them: When
ye set apart the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the
Levites as the increase of the threshing-floor, and as the increase of the
wine-press. 31 And ye may eat it in every place, ye and your
households; for it is your reward in return for your service in the tent of
meeting. 32 And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, seeing that ye
have set apart from it the best thereof; and ye shall not profane the holy
things of the children of Israel, that ye die not.
Yehoram
Gaon on the Solidarity Parade for Israel and the demonstrations:
Trivia
question these days, what have we heard more about in the news? About the
Solidarity Parade that was in New York? Or about the demonstration that was
next to him against the representatives of the government, who went at the head
of this fraternity parade for the people Israel.
So
that's it that the news here mostly told about the demonstration and the mopeds
and the shame-shame-shame and hardly a good word about the great joy and the
huge love that was flattened and flattened the pedestrians.
In
the parade in America there were about forty thousand happy celebrants and, in
the demonstration, (against the state representatives) less than a thousand
mourners.
It's
hard to understand this delusional phenomenon of the kicks we kick ourselves in
the head all the time, every threat that an Israeli leader comes to visit some
foreign country and Israeli protesters shout at him shame-shame-shame and the
locals don't understand this abominable spectacle.
Because
we are used to weekly demonstrations from home on the way home at the end of a
working day, demonstrations that stop our way of life, that light bonfires on main
roads and shut down our businesses, restaurants and shows for months until
bankruptcy, and we are used to and apathetic as it was a decree from the
heavens when they explain to us at demonstrations in the name of democracy that
we are "not" Understand "that" we are wrong" and put
us in demonstrations about our mistake in a democratic way.
They
yell at us at the demonstrations that we have chosen the wrong people, and it
is appropriate that we understand that already. And those who were elected will
not speak anywhere because democracy will chase them everywhere they go to
speak,
And
even though the demonstration now changes its topics every week, because the
reform in the debates are looking for other topics every week, that the fire of
freedom from the dictatorship of those who were elected by mistake, will not be
extinguished and this is done in a democratic way.
In
order to understand the foolishness, that was at the demonstration against the
spectacular Solidarity Parade in New York, I imagined myself as a "New
Yorker" who accidentally plunged into the place, and he sees a
demonstration of solidarity for Israel with the flags of Israel which are the
symbol of the country when leaders are chosen from the country (who are also
for that matter state symbols no less than the flag) walk at the head of the
march. As a Native American I look from the side, and see a different group of
people shouting shame shame shame and surprisingly they have the same flag.
And
I can't succeed as a "New York American", to understand who is
against who here? When they both have the same flag. And as an American, that
hears shame-shame on the marchers I think they are ashamed of the taste of
holding the same flag.
For
Davon Lev as Jews we have long known the phenomenon of the "destroyers of
the house", like the spies Moses sent to turn the land... "And you
will go out of the land, which you will give to the children of Israel,
according to the command of the land which we have passed through to give to
the land of the land, the land that is eaten by the people of Israel.
And
the people will perish from the beauty of the earth in the midst of the Lord.

So,
they shouldn't die, just to defame their country in their country! Why bother
so much just to tell the gentiles what they thought and think of us anyway at

During an extended
Israeli army operation that took place in Gaza a number of years ago the
fighting was fierce. Concerned Jews in America were looking for ways to
increase the spiritual armor that protected the young soldiers in the IDF.
Many people increased their Torah learning and prayers for the benefit of their
'own individual soldier' that had been arranged for them, and would say extra
Psalms on their behalf. One project that became popular in shuls and
communities throughout the United States was a campaign to supply the soldiers
with tzitzis,[1] which is the
strongest armor a Jew can wear, as it provides protection to one's body as
a mezuzah does for a house.
R. Moshe-Tuvia
Lieff was one rabbi who participated in this mission, and raised money to
purchase tzitzis for tens of thousands of Israeli soldiers who did not have
their own. After the war he heard a story that illustrated the life-saving
power of this protection:
THE SOLDIERS of the
Yahalom Counter Terrorist Unit were a subdivision of the IDF's Golani Brigade.
They were assigned a delicate and dangerous mission that would take them,
undercover, into enemy territory to search for a certain group of terrorists.
To do the job, they
had disguised themselves in Hamas uniforms, but underneath, they wore the
tzitzis they had just received from the American tzitzis campaign. They entered
the building they needed in Gaza and began searching for the terrorists,
knowing that any moment they could be discovered and killed.
All at once, the
mission went wrong. The soldiers were discovered and were being shot at by
terrorists hiding in different places in the building. The soldiers returned
fire, and made their way to the roof of the building, in an attempt to lose
their attackers, or to at least draw them into the open, and out of their
hiding places.
As they reached the
roof of the building they saw a welcome sight: an Israeli helicopter had come
to save them! Or so they thought.
However, in one
terrifying moment, their relief turned into panic. The helicopter was not
positioning itself for a rescue, it was getting ready to fire!
The men suddenly
realized that because of their disguises, they had become targets. With only
seconds left before the helicopter would open fire, there was no time to make
radio contact with the pilot, and there was no place to take cover on the roof
of a building. The group's leader screamed out to his soldiers, "Take out
your tzitzis!"
Frantically they
grabbed for their tzitzis and began waving them in the air. When he saw this
strange sight, the helicopter pilot, who literally had his finger on the
trigger, held his fire. He realized that no matter what they were wearing on
the outside, their fulfillment of the mitzvah of tzitzis had shown instantly
who they were on the inside, and they were saved!
IN 1982 SHALOM HAGALIL Operation in Lebanon a similar story
occurred. Israel had air superiority but once our pilots started bombing us.
One of the soldiers took out his Tallis and help it up and the friendly fire
stopped. From that time on, orange canopies were tied to the top of tanks and
armored personnel carriers and no more friendly fire on our forces. - RP

40 Captured Torah
Scrolls from Iraq by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

Rabbi Yisrael Gliss1 was the adviser to Professor Shimon
Sheetrit2, the minister of religion, and on the side, he worked as a
businessman, entrepreneur, and journalist. Rabbi Gliss heard about a clothing
factory in Jordan that manufactured suits for a great price. By purchasing
these suits wholesale and reselling them to the religious public, he could turn
a nice profit and help Haredim (Orthodox Jews) by dramatically
reducing the price of menswear.
Rabbi Gliss traveled to Jordan, where he visited the factory, bringing
along two suits from Israel to use as examples of what he wanted. The factory
manager told Rabbi Gliss to come back a week later.
When he returned the next week, Rabbi Gliss saw that the factory
had already created a number of suits according to the requested style. He
negotiated a good price for them and was going to sign a contract for more with
the manufacturer.
As Rabbi Gliss sat there, holding the pen, the manager said he
wanted to show him something: he had forty Torah scrolls he was willing to sell
for a thousand dollars apiece.
Right then, Rabbi Gliss recalled a story he had heard from his
parents, when he was only a young child.
When the Jordanian Legion conquered Jerusalem in the War of
Independence3, Rabbi Gliss's relatives were among the people they captured and
took as prisoners. As they were transported to Jordanian territory, the
prisoners saw a Jordanian truck stuffed with Torah scrolls.
The scrolls had once been used in synagogues in the Old City,
but they were now jammed in a truck, traveling towards Jordan. Realizing Torah
scrolls had economic value, someone had decided to take advantage of the
situation by pilfering some for later resale.
Rabbi Gliss felt that somehow, he was an important link in the
chain of his parents' story and the current one, and he hoped he would
participate in closing this circle. He wanted the honor of returning the Torah
scrolls to their original homes.
Following the factory manager to a side room, Rabbi Gliss
watched as he opened a chest and displayed what he had: one Torah scroll, cut
by hand into forty pieces. He must have thought that if he presented each of
the pieces as an individual Torah scroll, he could get a lot more money.
Rabbi Gliss was in complete shock and distress at seeing a Torah
desecrated like that, and making matters worse, it was quite clear that the
chopping had taken place recently. He assumed that the factory manager had done
it himself.
Rabbi Gliss decided then and there that there would absolutely
not be a deal - not with the Torah scrolls and not with the suits. He felt that
he could not do business with a dishonest person who so ruthlessly defiled holy
Jewish objects.
Rabbi Gliss turned to his contacts in the government and the
Mossad, asking if they could ascertain where the factory manager had obtained
that Torah scroll. After some research, they told him there really were forty
scrolls, and they were available for sale.
More of the story was soon revealed.
During the Gulf War, Saddam Hussein ordered a certain Iraqi air
force officer to blow up Baghdad's Great Synagogue4. He thought it would
somehow discredit American forces in the eyes of the Jews. The officer visited
the site before bombing it to see what was there. He found numerous Torah
scrolls inside, which he then removed to a storeroom off-site. Several days
later, he blew the synagogue to smithereens.
After the war ended, the officer was obviously not able to
return the Torahs to the synagogue. So, he decided to do business with them.
The Torah scrolls found their way to book dealers - and into the Mossad's
purview.
Upon hearing this account, Rabbi Gliss went to Professor
Sheetrit, whom he was working for at the Religious Affairs Ministry. He told
Sheetrit the whole story, and they approached the ministry's legal team about
reclaiming the scrolls. They gave Rabbi Gliss the green light to go ahead and
work to bring the scrolls back home.
Rabbi Gliss began making numerous trips to Jordan, bringing
Torah scrolls back with him each time. They were the scrolls from synagogues in
the Old City, as well as from Babylon (now modern-day Iraq). The Torahs were
then taken to Machon Ot,5 where Rabbi Yitzhak Steiner6 carefully and
lovingly repaired and restored them.
When Rabbi Gliss finally brought back the last Torah, he went to
see Rabbi Yosef Shalom Elyashiv,7 bringing this Torah along
with him. Rabbi Elyashiv took the opportunity to examine and learn from the
Torah scroll, making observations about the spacing between the lines, the
shape of the letters, and more.
Afterwards, Rabbi Gliss took the same Torah scroll to the Vizhnitzer
Rebbe.8 When the rebbe saw the Torah and heard the story of its
rescue, along with the other Torah scrolls that had been saved and returned to
the Jewish people, he became quite emotional. He wept so much that he needed a
towel to dry his tears.
Finally, Rabbi Gliss went to visit Rabbi Mordechai
Eliyahu with the Torah. He hadn't even managed to open it when Rabbi
Eliyahu said, "That scroll belonged to Shaul Tzadkah's9 family. The
Torah was in the genizah10 closet above the ark."
He went on to describe a second Torah scroll that had belonged
to the same family, explaining that it had been sitting in the ark itself. He
wanted to know where that Torah was, as it was kosher for ritual use. Rabbi Eliyahu
knew so much about that Torah, including who had financed it, which scribe
wrote it, and other tidbits of its history. But the best was yet to come.
He said there had been a third Torah scroll there, too, which
had been written by the Ben Ish Chai11 himself. Rabbi Eliyahu
mentioned that the Ben Ish Chai had signed the scroll, at the very end, on the
back of the last piece of parchment. Rabbi Eliyahu wanted to know if that
scroll had been among those that had been rescued - and if so, he wanted to know
where it was. Rabbi Gliss promised to do his utmost to find it.
When he investigated the matter, Rabbi Gliss discovered that the
scroll in question had indeed been recovered - and that it was currently in the
hands of the Mossad. After the Mossad had helped locate and retrieve the Torah
scrolls, the security agency had received one of them to use in their synagogue
for the weekly readings.
As it turned out, the Torah in the Mossad's synagogue was the
very one Rabbi Eliyahu wanted to see: The Ben Ish Chai's scroll. There was just
one problem: the Mossad was - and still is - one of the most guarded, enigmatic
organizations in the world.
The secret underground base, where the synagogue and Torah
scroll were located, is known as "the Hole." No one knows where the
Hole is - unless he needs to know. Rabbi Gliss was able to arrange12 for
Rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu to visit the synagogue in the Hole and see the Ben Ish
Chai's Torah scroll.
The Mossad agents were delighted by his visit, and the agency's
heads even came to greet him. When Rabbi Eliyahu opened the scroll and revealed
the Ben Ish Chai's signature, he began to tremble and weep at the sight.
Everyone stood there, dumbstruck - and then joined in Rabbi
Eliyahu's tears. They believed that the Ben Ish Chai's soul had guided the
Torah scroll to where it needed to be. The head of the Mossad, who was not a
demonstrative man, was standing there crying too - unabashed tears of joy and
emotion. The Torah scroll was finally home.
