Parsha Beresheis
I have covered the
creation part of this Parsha over the past few years so much that I have not devoted
enough time to other sections.
2:1 And the
heaven and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. 2 And on the seventh day
God finished His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from
all His work which He had made.
G-D refrains from creating things
on the 7th day. Although the prohibition of doing Melachos only came
about on Har Sinai, there were hints that our forefathers rested on Shabbos and
refrained from work. Yacov Avinu says in his message to Esav with Lavan Garti
Gematria 613 hinting on observance of the 613 laws (but he did marry two
sisters during the life of one). Still Shabbos seems to have been observed by
Noach and Shem and Ever were the teachers of Yacov. He learned as follows Adam
taught Methuselah who taught Noach and possibly Shem (either could have taught
Avram) Shem taught Yacov so close to the source.
3 And
God blessed the seventh day, and hallowed it; because that in it He rested from
all His work which God in creating had made.
The obvious conclusion is that if
G-D hallowed and rested on Shabbos starting with the evening until darkness the
next night, then we also should rest. It seems logical that there was some rest
and refrain from work weekly but was lost either during or after the flood as
Yafet and Ham do not observe it.
4 These are
the generations of the heaven and of the earth when they were created, in the
day that the LORD God made earth and heaven. 5 No
shrub of the field was yet in the earth, and no herb of the field had yet
sprung up; for the LORD God had not caused it to rain upon the earth, and there
was not a man to till the ground; 6 but
there went up a mist from the earth, and watered the whole face of the
ground.
It appears that in this Gan Eden
world, rain and seasons (mentioned in Parsha Noach) did not exist. The climate
was different and the plant kingdom was watered by a nightly mist.
7 Then the
LORD God formed man of the dust of the ground, and breathed into his nostrils
the breath of life; and man became a living soul.
Through the Kabbalah here both
Rava and the Maharal of Prague could create a Golem using spiritual entities
call Shaydim. They did not have the power to create a man with a spiritual
soul.
8 And
the LORD God planted a garden eastward, in Eden; and there He put the man whom
He had formed. 9 And out of the ground made
the LORD God to grow every tree that is pleasant to the sight, and good for
food; the tree of life also in the midst of the garden, and the tree of the
knowledge of good and evil.
We cannot imagine what this
garden was but there was communication either telepathic or by verbal sounds
between man and animal and within a short time at an amazing pace he named them
all and the fish too and he remembered their names. He called the donkey such
because of its nature, the dog, monkey and others too.
10 And
a river went out of Eden to water the garden; and from thence it was parted,
and became four heads.
Physically on the map I cannot
understand this as two of the rivers are north of Eretz Yisrael and two in the
heart of Africa leaving me with some spiritual questions unanswered. As far as
I am concerned Gan Eden produced these rivers and it was a spiritual realm and
not physical as we imagine.
15 And
the LORD God took the man, and put him into the garden of Eden to dress it and
to keep it. 16 And the LORD God commanded
the man, saying: 'Of every tree of the garden thou mayest freely eat; 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and
evil, thou shalt not eat of it; for in the day that thou eat thereof thou shalt
surely die.'
I am uncertain that Adam had a
concept of death other than after 1,000 years the body is destroyed and renewed
as with the legend of the Phoenix. Death and dying as we know it was not in the
psyche of man.
18 And
the LORD God said: 'It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make
him a help meet for him.' 19 And out
of the ground the LORD God formed every beast of the field, and every fowl of
the air; and brought them unto the man to see what he would call them; and whatsoever
the man would call every living creature, that was to be the name
thereof. 20 And the man gave names to
all cattle, and to the fowl of the air, and to every beast of the field; but
for Adam there was not found a help meet for him.
As I mentioned above man met all
the animals but none seemed to be on his level to be a help mate.
21 And
the LORD God caused a deep sleep to fall upon the man, and he slept; and He
took one of his ribs, and closed up the place with flesh instead thereof. 22 And the rib, which the LORD God had taken from
the man, made He a woman, and brought her unto the man.
Man was created according to the
Medrash back to back or like a Siamese twin with a woman. G-D separated them in
a modest place where they were attached. The L-RD
signed creation with his name. There are very slight DNA differences that
produce a plant, animal, fish, bird or man. It is known that the DNA Sequence
Spacing is a block of 10 Ketones, RNA, etc. The next space is five then six and
finally five again before the sequence repeats. Putting it in the Gematria of
the Hebrew Letters we have 10 which we note by Yud then 5 which is Hey followed
by six or Vav and finally the last five Hey. Yud-kay-Vav-kay where Kay = Hey
happens to be the TETRAGRAMATION OF THE DIVINE NAME.
23 And
the man said: 'This is now bone of my bones, and flesh of my flesh; she shall
be called Woman, because she was taken out of Man.'
Hebrew Ish אִ֖ישׁ and Isha אִשָּׁ֑ה. Rabbi Yacov Cohen Zal told me that when there is Shalom Beis
the Yud of the Ish and the Hey of the Isha is together but when they fight the
NAME of G-D leaves and we are left only with Aleph Shin or Aysh which is fire.
24 Therefore
shall a man leave his father and his mother, and shall cleave unto his wife,
and they shall be one flesh.
This was mentioned for later
generations and there is no early or late in Torah for HASHEM was the parent(s)
of Adam and Chava.
25 And
they were both naked, the man and his wife, and were not ashamed.
All the fish and animals
were naked and even smart animals like the snake or dolphins were not ashamed
of being nude. So why should they be as there were no other humans who would
look at them.
3:1 Now
the serpent was subtler than any beast of the field which the LORD God had
made. And he said unto the woman: 'Yea, hath God said: Ye shall not eat of any
tree of the garden?'
I am wondering if this ‘snake’ was not a reptile
like a small dinosaur creature. This creature did not slither but walked and
talked or telepathic communication with the woman. This ‘snake’ wanted the
woman for his wife.
2 And the woman said unto the serpent: 'Of the fruit of
the trees of the garden we may eat; 3 but of the fruit of the tree
which is in the midst of the garden, God hath said: Ye shall not eat of it, neither
shall ye touch it, lest ye die.'
Adam wanted to put a fence around the command of
eating into touching.
4 And the serpent said unto the woman: 'Ye shall not
surely die;
The command was given to man before woman was
created and the ‘snake’ knew that she would not die from touching. He wanted
that she would convince Adam to eat of it so Adam would die and she would be
his.
5 for God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then
your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as God, knowing good and evil.'
The ‘snake’ seems to know this there is apparent
innocence on her part as Adam was told this but perhaps Chava was not told this
information.
6 And when the woman saw that the tree was good for
food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be
desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat; and she
gave also unto her husband with her, and he did eat.
She ate so if she dies the ‘snake’ will not have
her but neither will Adam. The Medrash states that he injected her with Tuma.
7 And the eyes of them both were opened, and they knew
that they were naked; and they sewed fig-leaves together, and made themselves
girdles.
Previously they saw all creatures nude and did
not know of nudity or modesty now they knew.
8 And they heard the voice of the LORD God walking in
the garden toward the cool of the day; and the man and his wife hid themselves
from the presence of the LORD God amongst the trees of the garden.
Imagine being on a level that you could hear G-D’s
presence and feel it?
9 And the LORD God called unto the man, and said unto
him: 'Where art thou?' 10 And he said: 'I heard Thy voice in the
garden, and I was afraid, because I was naked; and I hid myself.'
If G-D created everything and Ayn Od Bilado
“nothing exists without the presence of HASHEM” then Adam did not put brain in
gear that G-D knows where he is and what he did.
11 And He said: 'Who told thee that thou were naked?
Hast thou eaten of the tree, whereof I commanded thee that thou shouldest not
eat?'
Oops he got found out.
12 And the man said: 'The woman whom Thou gave to be
with me, she gave me of the tree, and I did eat.'
Like many leaders of mankind who do not know that
the buck stops here, he passed on the blame to woman.
13 And the LORD God said unto the woman: 'What is this
thou hast done?' And the woman said: 'The serpent beguiled me, and I did
eat.'
She too passes on the blame.
14 And the LORD God said unto the serpent: 'Because thou
hast done this, cursed art thou from among all cattle, and from among all
beasts of the field; upon thy belly shalt thou go, and dust shalt thou eat all
the days of thy life. 15 And I will put enmity between thee and the
woman, and between thy seed and her seed; they shall bruise thy head, and thou
shalt bruise their heel.'
The culprit had no one to blame but himself as he
instigated the sin. So he gets punished first. But wait there are other
sinners.
16 Unto the woman He said: 'I will greatly multiply thy
pain and thy travail; in pain thou shalt bring forth children; and thy desire
shall be to thy husband, and he shall rule over you.'
I don’t know how much modern man rules over his wife. Even in the
days of Yacov Avinu he consulted with his wives and not rule over them.
17 And unto Adam He said: 'Because thou hast hearkened
unto the voice of thy wife, and hast eaten of the tree, of which I commanded
thee, saying: Thou shalt not eat of it; cursed is the ground for thy sake; in
toil shalt thou eat of it all the days of thy life. 18 Thorns also
and thistles shall it bring forth to thee; and thou shalt eat the herb of the
field. 19 In the sweat of thy face shalt thou eat bread, till thou
return unto the ground; for out of it were thou taken; for dust thou art, and
unto dust shalt thou return.'
Was he eating Mann from heaven? It is not known
what his original diet was but now he had to eat bread.
20 And the man called his wife's name Eve; because she
was the mother of all living. 21 And the LORD God made for Adam and
for his wife garments of skins, and clothed them.
Now G-D taught them how to make clothing from
skins and other things necessary to survive and work with rather than the rest
and relaxation they had and understand creation.
22 And the LORD God said: 'Behold, the man is become as one
of us, to know good and evil; and now, lest he put forth his hand, and take
also of the tree of life, and eat, and live forever.' 23 Therefore
the LORD God sent him forth from the garden of Eden, to till the ground from
whence he was taken. 24 So He drove out the man; and He placed at the
east of the garden of Eden the cherubim, and the flaming sword which turned
every way, to keep the way to the tree of life.
Where was this Gan Eden where man could ‘see from
one end of the world to the other’, be sustained and live an eternal life? It
appears to be a different physical-spiritual dimension and not in our three
dimensional world.
4:1 And the man knew Eve his wife; and she conceived and
bore Cain, and said: 'I have gotten a man with the help of the LORD.' 2 And again she bore his brother Abel. And Abel was a
keeper of sheep, but Cain was a tiller of the ground.
There are commentaries that say they were born
with a female twin and Hevel with two females.
3 And in process of ti me it came to pass, that Cain brought
of the fruit of the ground an offering unto the LORD. 4 And Abel, he also brought of the firstlings of his
flock and of the fat thereof. And the LORD had respect unto Abel and to his
offering;
Kayn brought to G-D inferior animals. Hevel brought
the best fruits.
5 but unto Cain and to his
offering He had not respect. And Cain was very wroth, and his countenance
fell.
HASHEM checks kidneys, hearts and brains of each
man and knows his intent (Kavanah) and Kayn wanted the best for himself. He too
forgot that everything comes from HASHEM.
6 And the LORD said unto Cain:
'Why art thou wroth? and why is thy countenance fallen? 7 If thou do well, shall it not be lifted up? and if
thou do not well, sin couches at the door; and unto thee is its desire, but
thou mayest rule over it.' 8 And
Cain spoke unto Abel his brother. And it came to pass, when they were in the
field, that Cain rose up against Abel his brother, and slew him.
Until now, human death was not known in the
world. Out of a fit of jealousy, Kayn murders Hevel. Nobody could dream of
death machines producing chemical gas chambers or burning down a house to roast
people in shelters or shooting through the shelter door with antiaircraft guns
in order to murder in cold blood the occupants or gunning down teens at a music
party.
9 And the LORD said unto Cain:
'Where is Abel thy brother?' And he said: 'I know not; am I my brother's
keeper?'
He murdered but thought that if Hevel is buried
G-D would not see and not know. He hadn’t the foggiest idea why his Korban was
rejected. He did not understand that a Neshama is part of HASHEM but above the
three dimensions. He did not know that HASHEM checks kidneys and heart and
knows our thoughts.
10 And He said: 'What hast
thou done? the voice of thy brother's blood cries unto Me from the
ground.
He had no idea about Neshamos and eternity or the
inanimate functioning before HASHEM as he did not have the Gan Eden education.
11 And now cursed art thou
from the ground, which hath opened her mouth to receive thy brother's blood
from thy hand.
The blood has made the ground so impure that it
will punish you.
12 When thou till the ground,
it shall not henceforth yield unto thee her strength; a fugitive and a wanderer
shalt thou be in the earth.'
I once heard Mussar from Rabbi Shalom Shwadron
Ztzal that says when it comes to vacation time from the Yeshiva, the young men
take upon themselves the curse of Kayn and wonder about the earth.
13 And Cain said unto the
LORD: 'My punishment is greater than I can bear. 14 Behold, YOU have driven me out this day from the face
of the land; and from Thy face shall I be hid; and I shall be a fugitive and a
wanderer in the earth; and it will come to pass, that whosoever finds me will
slay me.'
He realizes that he is going to be an outcast
along with his sister-wife.
15 And the LORD said unto him:
'Therefore whosoever slays Cain, vengeance shall be taken on him sevenfold.'
And the LORD set a sign for Cain, lest any finding him should smite him.
Slaying yes but Kayn would die by accidental
manslaughter as he had a garment of animal skins and from a distance he would
be shot by a hunter like an animal.
16 And Cain went out from the
presence of the LORD, and dwelt in the land of Nod, on the east of Eden. 17 And Cain knew his wife; and she conceived, and bore
Enoch; and he built a city, and called the name of the city after the name of
his son Enoch. 18 And unto Enoch was
born Irad; and Irad begot Mehujael; and Mehujael begot Methushael; and
Methushael begot Lamech. 19 And
Lamech took unto him two wives; the name of one was Adah, and the name of the
other Zillah. 20 And Adah bore
Jabal; he was the father of such as dwell in tents and have cattle. 21 And his brother's name was Jubal; he was the father
of all such as handle the harp and pipe.
Man began inventing things and even found leisure
time for music.
22 And Zillah, she also bore
Tubal-cain, the forger of every cutting instrument of brass and iron; and the
sister of Tubal-cain was Naamah.
He invented hunting instruments like arrows and
knives but instead of for good they became weapons.
23 And Lamech said unto his
wives: Adah and Zillah, hear my voice; ye wives of Lamech, hearken unto my
speech; for I have slain a man for wounding me, and a young man for bruising me;
Lamech appears to have become blind probably a
cataract. He could not see that Kayn with the animal skins was his forefather
and he shot towards the “animal” and killed Kayn. Tuval-Kayn told him what
happened and the clapped his hands together in grief and accidently killed
Tuval-Kayn. Thus, I have slain a man meaning Kayn and a young man Tuval-Kayn.
The whole story is brought down because Naamah is going to marry Noach and keep
the world alive. Thus, children from Kayn and Seth continue life on earth.
24 If Cain shall be avenged
sevenfold, truly Lamech seventy and sevenfold. 25 And Adam knew his wife again; and she bore a son, and
called his name Seth: 'for God hath appointed me another seed instead of Abel;
for Cain slew him.'
Both cases were accidental manslaughter therefore
it should take 77 generations instead of seven for me to be punished.
26 And to Seth, to him also
there was born a son; and he called his name Enosh; then began men to call upon
the name of the LORD.
The people realized that if they ever wanted to
return to Gan Eden they would have to do Teshuva.
5:1 This is the
book of the generations of Adam. In the day that God created man, in the
likeness of God made He him; 2 male and female created He them, and blessed them,
and called their name Adam, in the day when they were created. 3 And Adam lived a hundred and thirty years, and begot
a son in his own likeness, after his image; and called his name Seth. 4 And the days of Adam after he begot Seth were eight
hundred years; and he begot sons and daughters. 5 And all the days that Adam lived were nine hundred
and thirty years; and he died. 6 And
Seth lived … 8 And all the days of Seth
were nine hundred and twelve years; and he died. 9 And Enosh … and begot sons and daughters. 11 And all the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five
years; and he died. 12 And Kenan
lived … and begot sons and daughters. 14 And
all the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years; and he died. 15 And Mahalalel lived sixty and five years, and begot
Jared. … And all the days of
Mahalalel were eight hundred ninety and five years; and he died. 18 And Jared lived a hundred sixty and two years, and
begot Enoch. 19 And Jared lived
after he begot Enoch eight hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 20 And all the days of Jared were nine hundred sixty and
two years; and he died. 21 And Enoch
lived sixty and five years, and begot Methuselah. 22 And Enoch walked with God after he begot Methuselah
three hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 23 And all the days of Enoch were three hundred sixty
and five years. 24 And Enoch walked
with God, and he was not; for God took him.
Chanoch became so holy that he became Metatron the leader of
the Arch Angels.
25 And Methuselah lived a hundred eighty and seven years,
and begot Lamech.
26 And Methuselah lived after he begot Lamech seven
hundred eighty and two years, and begot sons and daughters.
All the ‘begot’ and years afterwards are important for this.
For Lamech lived a total of 777years. Thus, he died early before the flood.
27 And all the days of Methuselah were nine hundred
sixty and nine years; and he died.
He was the Tzadik that prevented the flood. He died in the
year 1656 a week of Shiva before the flood. Without his merits, the world would
be punished for the wickedness. The Medrash specifies that the sky shone like
Maaseh Beresheis meaning the 7 days of creation. Velikovsky may have been
correct that the flood was caused by a close encounter of earth with a large
asteroid or comet almost the size of a planet. Miracles of HASHEM according to
the Rambam are caused through natural means.
28 And Lamech lived a hundred eighty and two years, and
begot a son. 29 And
he called his name Noah, saying: 'This same shall comfort us in our work and in
the toil of our hands, which cometh from the ground which the LORD hath
cursed.'
He saw the generations getting worse and worse and the moral
derogation. Noah would be the one to keep the world going.
30 And Lamech lived after he begot Noah five hundred
ninety and five years, and begot sons and daughters.
5 years before the deluge. He was righteous enough to die in
peace, albeit younger than his ancestors but not to see the destruction of the
flood and lament.
31 And all the days of Lamech were seven hundred seventy
and seven years; and he died. 32 And Noah was five hundred years old; and Noah begot
Shem, Ham, and Japheth.
He will train his children to avoid evil and the world will
continue from them.
6:1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face
of the earth, and daughters were born unto them, 2 that the sons of
God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives,
whomsoever they chose.
There are two different commentaries. Some say that the sons
of G-D were nobles the Pharaoh and the Emperor of Japan were gods and they
could take any female they wanted. Another commentary names two Angels who
instead of returning to heaven after their mission take human females as wives.
3 And
the LORD said: 'My spirit shall not abide in man forever, for that he also is
flesh; therefore, shall his days be a hundred and twenty years.'
I am going to destroy the world in another 120years. For the
life span of 120years would take more than ten generations.
4 The
Nephilim were in the earth in those days, and also after that, when the sons of
God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bore children to them; the same
were the mighty men that were of old, the men of renown.
Either these were great kings of giant human beings from the
Angels.
5 And
the LORD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every
imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually. 6 And it repented the LORD that He had made man on the
earth, and it grieved Him at His heart. 7 And the LORD said: 'I will
blot out man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and
beast, and creeping thing, and fowl of the air; for it repents Me that I have
made them.'
Man has become filled with idolatry, immoral and incestuous
relations, thievery, violence and after Lamech even murder.
8 But
Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
Noach was behaving thanks to Methuselah’s education and
HASHEM would rebuild a better world through him.
Next week we learn that the world
was destroyed by the flood for the “The earth was full of Hamas (violence)”.
Rabbi Eliezer Melamed Shlita below.
Obliterating the wicked in war:
It is true bravery to erase from the world the
haters of G-D and Israel.
When we go to war against the enemy who attempts
to annihilate us, the goal is not only to save Israel and deter other foes who
harbor the same nefarious goal, but to also eradicate the wicked and purge
wickedness from the world.
Ideally, we long to be charitable
to all mankind. We inherited this noble trait from Avraham, our forefather, may
he rest in peace, who was a beacon of loving kindness to all of the human race
through his outstanding hospitality. With unconditional love, he sought to
uplift even lowly idol worshipers, inviting them into his tent and drawing them
to believe in the One and only God.
Jews, by nature, are naturally
compassionate and benevolent (Yevamos 79A). However, man has been given freedom
of choice, and when the leader of a nation opts to act wickedly, seeking to
kill us and steal our Holy Land, we are commanded to fight him, in order to
punish him and his supporters.
As in the words of King David who
sang: “I have pursued my enemies, and destroyed them; and turned back not
again until I had consumed them. And I have consumed them, and crushed them,
that they could not arise - they are fallen under my feet. For You have girded
me with strength to battle; they that have risen up against me have You subdued
under me. You have also made my enemies turn their backs on me, that I might
destroy them that hate me. They looked, but there was none to save, to the
Lord, but He answered them not. Then did I beat them as small as the dust of
the earth, I did stamp them as the mire of the street, and I did tread them
down…” (Shmuel 2, 22:38-43).
Indeed,
King David applied not only defensive tactics, but also initiated attacks
against Israel’s enemies. His army wouldn’t have been called the “Israel
Defense Force,” but rather the “Israel Attack Force,” or simply the “Israeli
Army.” In fighting enemies who seek to destroy us, there is no place for
embarrassment, apologies, or misplaced compassion.
As
our Sages have taught, the person who is kind to the cruel, will eventually
show cruelty to the kind (Koheles Rabbah 7:16).
One
must know that whoever fights Israel is also fighting God, for Israel is His
favored son. The Melchilta states, “Whoever attacks Israel is treated as having
attacked God” (Beshalach, Mesechta Deshira, 6). Therefore, King David’s battles
against Israel’s enemies are called “the wars of Hashem” (Shmuel 1, 18:17;
28:28).
This
is true moral bravery, to erase from the world the haters of God and Israel.
For doing so, King David had the merit to establish the kingship in Israel for
all generations. But he never forgot that his victories, and his great strength
in battle, came from Hashem, as he concludes in his song: “Therefore I will
give thanks to you, O Lord, among the nations, and I will sing praises to your
Name. He is the tower of salvation for his king, and shows mercy to his
anointed, to David, and to his seed forever” (Shmuel 2,
22:50-51)."

Is Lab Grown Pork
Kosher?
https://aish.com/is-lab-grown-pork-kosher/
For the first time in history,
lab grown meat has been given a kosher certification. Now you can understand
why this is big news.
The Orthodox Union, a leading kosher certification
agency, recently granted its first kosher certification to lab-grown meat made
by Super-Meat, an Israeli startup that uses stem cells from eggs. This is a
significant development for the world of Kosher supervision.
The requirements for Kosher meat are complex and
traditionally only meat from a Kosher species of animal that was ritually
slaughtered is permitted. However, there has been ongoing debate in rabbinic
circles that lab-grown meat, even pork, is perhaps different and doesn’t have
the same strict kosher requirements of regular meat.
In order to avoid this controversy, the Super-Meat
company used chicken eggs, an obviously kosher item that doesn’t require ritual
slaughter, to avoid this debate. While it is doubtful that any reputable Kosher
certification agency will certify lab-grown pork, this article presents aspects
of this fascinating discussion.
The basic concept of lab-grown meat is that living
cells are taken from an animal and are grown in a laboratory under special
conditions into a piece of meat. This process could alleviate the need for
farming and slaughtering animals. The question has been raised: what is the
status of this meat in Jewish law? If it comes from a non-kosher source, does
it retain its prohibition or is it viewed as synthetic and permitted? Likewise,
if lab-grown beef is not beef, would it be permitted to it eat with cheese,
like in a cheeseburger?
At the heart of this debate lies an important
question as to whether or not meat created through unnatural means still has
the kosher status of regular meat. We begin our discussion with two conflicting
sources.
The Talmud1 relates that sage, Rabbi
Shimon ben Chalafta was traveling and met up with hungry lions, endangering his
life. He recited a verse and two pieces of meat descended from the heavens. The
lions ate one piece of meat and left the second. Rabbi Shimon ben Chalafta took
the piece of meat with him to the Rabbis in the study hall and asked, “Is this
heavenly meat kosher or not?”
The Rabbis answered, “An impure item does not descend
from the heavens.” Another Rabbi asked, “Would the law be the same if the meat
came in the form of a donkey?” which is an obviously non-kosher animal. Rabbi
Abahu answered, “Didn’t I tell you that an impure item does not descend from
the Heavens?!” The Yad Ramah, a medieval commentator, explains that
if this would happen, the donkey would still be kosher.
Apparently, a donkey made in heaven is kosher!
Some contemporary Rabbis contend that any meat
produced in a laboratory has the same status as heavenly meat and is kosher.
This is because they understand that the reason why the heavenly donkey is
permitted is because it is unnatural. As such, lab-grown meat, although not
heavenly, is produced by unnatural means and is therefore permitted.
The assertion that anything produced in an unnatural
way doesn’t have regular kosher laws is far from conclusive. Many contemporary
Rabbis challenge this position from a different passage in the Talmud. The
Talmud asks if “wheat kernels that came from the clouds” could be used for the
meal offering in the Temple?2 The Talmud answers
that generally such wheat may be used. What are wheat kernels that came from
the clouds? According to the explanation of Tosafos, a classic
commentary, the Talmud is referring to wheat that came miraculously from the
heavens.
According to this passage heavenly wheat is still
wheat despite its unnatural origin. As the saying goes, “If it looks like a
duck and quacks like a duck, it is a duck!” This source could indicate that
generally Jewish law views an item based on its present consistency, not their
origin. Based on this source it should follow that artificially grown meat, if
it has all the characteristics of regular meat, is considered meat, so
lab-grown pork is still pork and prohibited. This seems to contradict the
previous passage considering heavenly donkeys to be kosher, which could
indicate that lab grown pork is kosher.
These conflicting sources could be reconciled based
on the approach of the 19th century Hassidic scholar, the Rebbe of Radzin, to
another puzzling Talmudic passage. The Talmud3 tells a story
that Rava created a man through Jewish mysticism (often referred to
as a “golem” -- think of the Golem of Prague or Frankenstein!) and sent
it to Rabbi Zeira. Rabbi Zeira was unable to converse with it and destroyed it.
The commentaries ask how could Rabbi Zeira destroy
the golem? Doesn’t this transgress the prohibition of murder? Some answer that
since the golem was not born from a human mother it does not have the status of
a human and is not considered murder. However, the Rebbe of Radzin4 disagreed
and offered an important alternate approach.
The Radziner Rebbe observes that the golem described
in this story was ‘unable to converse’. Speech is a defining human
characteristic and if golems categorically cannot speak, they
are lacking a basic human characteristic. Being that a golem is not completely
similar to a human being, it is not included in the prohibition of murder.
This approach could answer the conflicting sources
cited in this article. The ‘heavenly wheat’ was only suitable as an offering
because it had all the regular characteristics of wheat. However, when it comes
to the ‘heavenly donkeys’ the wording of the Talmud it that it had the
‘likeness’ of a donkey. This could mean that it had the likeness of a donkey
but wasn’t exactly the same. As such, similar to the golem, almost a
donkey is not a donkey! If it would be exactly the same then
we would have to concede that it has the status of a regular donkey and is
prohibited.
Based on the approach of the Radziner Rebbe,
lab-grown meat, which is exactly the same as regular meat, doesn’t have a
special kosher status. Therefore, lab-grown pork, despite its unnatural origin,
is still pork and not kosher.
We have seen conflicting sources regarding the status
of items created through miracles. However, there is a strong case to be made
that lab-grown meat should not be viewed as miraculous altogether. Unlike a
real miracle it is simply growing existing biological material under special
man-made conditions.
Based on our discussion, it is understandable why the
Orthodox Union only certified meat made from chicken eggs. As we have learned,
lab-grown pork may still be considered pork. Furthermore, even if lab-grown
meat is made from a Kosher species of animal, like a cow, there is still a
requirement of ritual slaughter. As such, if lab-grown beef is made from stem
cells that were harvested before ritual slaughter, it could still be an issue.
Chicken eggs, unlike beef or poultry, have a unique
status in Jewish dietary law and do not require ritual slaughter. By using
chicken eggs, the Orthodox Union hopes to introduce a lab-grown meat that will
be universally accepted.

Torah Dance by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
http://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5784/1347-04.html
He came by the house
of Rabbi Yerachmiel Milstein every six months or so, for a modest
contribution to support the immigrant village he helped build in Israel to
absorb new arrivals from Russia. His excited, high pitched voice and happy,
dancing eyes belied the deep furrows in his brow, which were painfully etched
by decades of punishment at the hands of the communist authorities for the
terrible crime of being an observant Jew in the Soviet Union during the 50's,
60's and early 70's.
It became a ritual.
Millstein would ask the diminutive rabbi if he'd like a bite to eat. He would
always counter in his Russian accented Yiddish, "Perhaps, just a glass of
tea."
Millstein's wife would
serve him a steaming cup of dark orange brew along with a generous slice of
home-made cake, both of which seemed to help straighten his sagging shoulders
just a bit. Trudging door to door for small donations, it had certainly been
awhile since his last square meal.
One time, he looked up
at his host and smiled broadly. "Did you know there was such a thing as a
Cantonist Shul?"
Millstein remembered
stories he heard as a child which described some of the darkest, but most
heroic days in Jewish history.
The Cantonists were
Jews who from 1827-1858 were forcibly conscripted into the Russian Czar's army
from as early as the age of 10, and obligated to serve for 25 years. The
authorities saw it as a corrective, forced assimilation of stubborn Jews into
Russian society. They would be kidnapped from their parents' home, tortured
repeatedly until they either accepted Christianity or died of their wounds.
They were starved,
beaten and lashed, often with whips fashioned from their own confiscated
tefillin. In their malnourished states, the open wounds on their chests and
backs would turn septic and many boys, who had heroically resisted renouncing
their Judaism for months, would either perish or cave in and consent to the
show baptism. The Czar would have only reliable Christian Russians defending
the motherland.
To avoid this horrific
fate, some parents actually had their sons' limbs amputated in the forests at
the hands of local blacksmiths, and their sons -- no longer able bodied --
would avoid conscription. Many other children tragically committed suicide
rather than convert.
Some 40,000 young
Jewish boys were forced into Czar Nicholas' army, and very few emerged alive as
practicing Jews. [1]
Even the brave few
survivors who secretly maintained their faith and managed to return to their
families 25 years later, by and large found themselves shunned as traitors to
Judaism. [2]
"The Cantonists
actually did have a shul of their own," the rabbi continued. "After
all, they had nowhere else to go.
"My grandfather
told me that he once attended the Cantonist Shul on Simchat Torah. The
Cantonists could dance like Cossacks. They were huge, strong men, and the heavy
Torah scrolls would seem like toothpicks in their arms. They effortlessly
danced on for hours on end. Although they were looked down upon by other Jews,
and they were not very learned and really couldn't observe the Torah properly,
they were nonetheless able to rejoice in their Judaism and celebrate the Torah.
It was truly amazing."
He paused long enough
to dip a sugar cube into the still hot tea cup, placed the cube in his mouth
and swallowed another long swig of the tea.
"Then for the
final hakafah (circuit around the synagogue's central lectern), the Cantonists,
as if on cue, suddenly removed their shirts in unison! With the Torahs held
tightly to their bare skin which was covered with the ugliest welts and scars
you ever saw, they danced around even more energetically. Their smiles were now
giving way to streams of tears as they looked out into the crowd of assembled
Jews, as if to say, 'You may have studied and observed this Torah, but we gave
our bodies and our lives for it. The Torah is at least as much ours as it is
yours!'"
As he put the tea cup
down, he couldn't hide the tremor in his hand which caused a rattled meeting of
cup to saucer.
Wiping away a tear
with his napkin, he shrugged, "In democratic America it is so easy. Yet so
many say, 'It's so hard.' Go figure."

Accessing the hidden light of creation. By Rabbi
Yerachmiel Tilles
http://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5784/1348-05.html
"Rabbi Elazar
said: The light that the Holy One, blessed be He, made on the first day of
Creation was not that of the sun but a different kind of light, through which
Adam could observe from one end of the world to the other. But when G-d looked
upon the generations of the Flood and the Dispersion and saw that their ways
would be corrupt and that they might misuse this light for evil, He arose and
concealed it from them…. And for whom did He conceal it? For the righteous
people in the future, as it is stated: "And G-d saw the light, that it was
good" (Gen. 1:3), "good" referring to none other than the Tzadikim
(perfectly righteous people)." (Talmud Chagigah 12a)
The uniqueness and
greatness of the holy Baba Sali, Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira of blessed
memory, was not limited to those times that he revealed his powers by
performing open miracles, for his entire behavior and true spiritual level were
beyond the comprehension of ordinary men. All were amazed by the simplicity
with which he spoke about the secrets of creation and the hidden ways in which
G-d guides His world. Even as we know that the pathways in heaven are as
familiar to Tzadikim as the entryways to their own homes, the matter-of-fact
manner in which the Baba Sali spoke about heavenly concepts was astounding.
Stories heard from
reliable witnesses abound. One of the most remarkable stories about the holy
light and vision of the Baba Sali took place over fifty years ago:
A terrible incident
occurred in 1972 when a daughter of one of the most prominent Jewish families
in Mexico was kidnapped by a group of Mexican gangsters who had been tracking the
girl in the hopes of holding her for a large ransom. They demanded $60 million
for the safe return of the young girl. If their demands were not met, they
threatened, the girl would be executed. There were to be no further
negotiations, they declared.
Unfortunately, this
was not wholly uncommon. Throughout the latter half of the 20th century, the
Mexican Jewish community lived in relative stability. The economic boom that
followed World War II lasted for nearly thirty years and continued to allow
Mexican Jews to greatly prosper. However, the country began to experience
economic difficulties, which affected them in numerous ways. Abductions, theft
and gang-related crime became all too commonplace and no one was safe, least of
all the wealthy Jews of Mexico and its environs.
The family of the girl
was in a state of panic. They could not possibly come up with that absurd sum
of money and the Mexican police could not be relied upon to find their daughter
alone.
An uncle of the
kidnapped girl was dispatched to Netivot, in southern Israel, to seek the
blessing and advice of the holy Baba Sali. The man rushed to the Tzadik’s home
and explained what had occurred to his niece in Mexico. He informed the Baba
Sali that the kidnappers had said they would not negotiate. They wanted their
money or the consequences would be dire.
The Chacham (sage,
wise man) sat in his chair motionless. His face was almost entirely covered by
the veil he wore over it. He seemed to have immersed himself totally inward.
Suddenly, he called
for a pen and paper. His attendant ran to bring the items and the Baba Sali
began to talk as he traced the shape of a building on the paper. This is what
he said:
"In order to
rescue the girl, this is what you must do. Go to so and so (he named a specific
place) and there you will find two of the kidnappers. One is short and stout
like a barrel and the other is tall and thin like a tree. Bring with you twenty
policemen and overwhelm the two kidnappers who are acting as lookouts.
"Then, take these
two men and have them lead you to the spot where the girl is being kept. Be
careful. There are another six kidnappers who are hiding out there. Let the
first two open the doors and then the police can storm in and rescue the girl.
Do this and you will be successful."
The uncle rushed out
and relayed the information, just as the Baba Sali had drawn it up on paper.
The police were informed, the raid was successful, thank G-d, and the girl was
rescued. The entire plan was carried out exactly how the Baba Sali had outlined
it from his home in Netivot, over 6,000 miles away!
The Baba had never
stepped foot in Mexico, nor, of course, had he ever seen the buildings he
diagrammed or how the kidnappers looked. And yet, he could see them; he could
see it all! Undoubtedly, it was the special light -- the "Ohr
Haganuz" ('Hidden Light) -- which enabled him to see from one end of the
world to the other.

Biographical note: Rabbi Yisrael Abuhatzeira [1890 - 4 Shvat 1984]
known as Baba Sali, was born in Tafilalet Morocco, to one of Jewry's
most illustrious families. From a young age he was renowned as a sage, miracle maker
and master kabbalist. In 1964 he moved to Eretz Yisrael, eventually settling in
1970 in the Southern development town he made famous, Netivot, and where, since
1984, his tomb has become one of Israel's most visited pilgrimage sites. A
number of collect-ions of stories featuring him have been published, including
at least two in English.
Connection: The third verse in the weekly Torah reading
encapsulates the theme of the story.
Miraculous Escape
by Rabbi Rachamim Pauli
1 There was a couple at
the Party on Shabbos Simchas Torah. They heard all the rockets go off and the
young man gathered his belongings to leave the Party. Suddenly, they heard
shooting in the distance he drove his jeep over the desert landscape eastward.
Suddenly, they were spotted and shot at. He made a hard left as bullets
streaked by.
He was now driving 90 kmph
or between 55 to 60 mph in the terrain. They passed by terrorists who looked
them in the eye and shots rang out hitting his friend in the backseat in the
head. He yelled “hold your head”. Suddenly he saw an RPG being aimed at them.
Another hard left and by centimeters or inches missed them. Then two motor
cycles with murderers chased after them. Almost like back to the future, he
throttled away.
They went of all places to
Kibbutz Beeri to hide out (where 120 were slaughtered). They hid in a public
toilet stall 6 hours.
2 Two families were
together in Ofakim for Simchas Torah. They hid on the second floor. When they
heard terrorists in the house, they went up to the roof. Everybody hid by the
hot water solar panels. As the lady’s mother-in-law went to the roof the
terrorist had a gun jam but when her husband went outside he took a bullet into
his skull HY”D.
3 Kibbutz Saad, Kfar
Maimon, Netivot, Tifrach and one Kibbutz that started to observe Shabbos were
spared and even most of Ofakim. MORE THAN YOU GUARD THE SHABBOS, THE SHABBOS
GUARDS YOU.
4 A boy had left the
religious path. He and his friends went for a blessing they got but he did not
want the blessing. The Rav said promise me that at least for Tishrei you will
observe Shabbos. He was supposed to be at the party but a promise is a promise
and there will be other parties. He went home for Simchas Torah. He lived to
tell the story. MORE THAN YOU GUARD THE SHABBOS, THE SHABBOS GUARDS YOU.

Motzei Simchas Torah Oct.

At 6:30AM Hamas launched hundreds of
rockets and with bulldozers broke though the border fence. Pick-up trucks took
hundreds if not thousands of terrorists and many by foot crossed the border.
There is still at 10PM a large number of hostages in the dining room at Kibbutz
Beeri.
Hamas attacked a party with hundreds
and music. At least 52 captured by J. Post and videos of captives shown before
the TV censored faces. 250 plus murdered including a Police Chief in a Bedouin
area and Bedouins were recently blocking highways. 1,500 injured a few
high-ranking soldiers killed or captured. Israel hit Gaza but the battle is
like one on one with injured and killed.
As I write 10:25 PM the police are
trying to regain the Police Station in Sderot. Police fought earlier with
pistols vs. machine guns. Kfar Aza there is a house to house fire-fight and no
soldiers.
UNIFIL soldiers are evacuating south
Lebanon. Israel of course is reinforcing soldiers. In Shomron, reserve soldiers
are replacing paratroopers who are heading to Gaza.
Schools closed and my gym closes all
gyms south of Hadera.
Both Ganz and Lapid are talking of a
temporary unity government.
Where is the army? The units take
time to organize, practice and integrate. Gaza will still be there tomorrow but
we want the least causalities.
There are no buses from Bnei Brak to

4Divisions Grouping and practicing
to go into Gaza. Many have the fear that as usual the spineless PM will do the
usual insanity and repeat what he did in the past. People in the Cabinet
demanding a commission of inquiry. For tiny Israel it is like the US losing
10,000 on 9/11.
Hamas shot people driving into or
out of Gaza and then burned the bodies in the car. That is how the Col.
commanding the Nahal was murdered on his way to the battle. In Sderot the Hamas
drove in shooting anybody on the street. They took over a police station and
then burned the bodies of the officers murdered. After hours of battle with
them and their escape it appears that they died in a gun fight.
Hezballah fired rockets on Har Dov.
Israel finally took out their tent manned or not. Soldiers called up to the
Golan Heights arrived there but no food supplies came last night. Drills
already took place after dark.
The IDF is still fighting in Beeri
after freeing 15 hostages and fighting in Kfar Aza as more rockets shot. The
total during the first 24 hours was between 3,500 to 4,000 rockets.
Death toll is 350 or more so far some
names have been posted and 15 civilians. One high ranking officer lost his son
in the attack. 1860 wounded. Soroka Hospital received 646 wounded along with
about 100 normal civilian emergencies. Ashkelon Hospital took a direct hit and
their main operating theater was knocked out with a few departments. The
operating theaters underground are new and functioning and they took in 500 or
more wounded as well as wounded transferred to the center of the country.
Hamas is sending drones and used
kite like parashot in the air with small cars and one terrorist to cross on
Simchas Torah. About 12 Hamas landed on beaches and were taken care of by the
Navy.
Menashe reported rumors of shooting
near the route 4 Coca Cola Bridge opposite Bnei Brak. He arrived home in one
piece and the Yeshivas may open tomorrow for learning for our soldiers, wounded
and captured as they did 50years ago.

and the Hamas destroyed the cameras by drones. The number of dead has risen to

Terrorist caught in hijacked car and

Schools are still closed but my gym
weight room was supposed to open up to 50 people but the pool and studio is
closed. But when I arrived it was closed. Outdoor gatherings are limited to 10
people so when we got a Minyan, others joined in. The fence between Gaza and
Israel is still open and there must be still penetration. At the Sderot
junction there was a battle most of the night until dawn the terrorist or
Shachidim were exposed. Only 14 surrended up to last night. Still some
reinfiltrated or others infiltrated with 24 holes in the fence and maybe an
underground passage to Kfar Gaza. Some areas are blocked by tanks. As the house
to house search of the Kibbutzim rises so does the death toll. Some of the
victims could have been saved but bled to death. Others were injured and shot
with many bullets. Desecration of bodies was typical of the highly cultured
Hamas. Number of injured rises to 2,400 and they are the lucky ones.
You may recall that Donald J. Trump
granted Israel an emergency weapons stowage for either the US or us. We emptied
it out to the Ukraine. Biden ordered it refilled yesterday.
The northern Yishuvim and Kibbutzim
are being orderly evacuated. I think most of the buses are in the army I only
saw one private one on the road.
I went shopping today the store was
relatively empty a lot of things were missing from the shelves especially milk
as the Chinese bought Tnuva. The tariffs on milk and milk products have been
lowered.
Not yet in the news 4 frogmen killed
as they land and the rest flee this morning. I think that Hamas has run out of
paragliders for now. An 8year old was injured by a rocket in Ashkelon last
night. So far the IAF has hit 1,100 targets and the people are told to store
water as we are going to cut off their water supply and soon they will run out
of diesel for their generators as we shut down our supply of electric power.
(This is the first time but you cannot expect us to be nice when our people are
murdered individually in their homes.)

The call-up of 300,000 reservist
left many in the beginning without helmets, food and other items. The call-up
system is efficient but the logistics system leaves something to be desired. I
guess there will be conclusions half-past the war. Today another 60,000 were
called up. You don’t call up most the country and shut down all the schools for
your standard Gaza operation. When the Shalom HaGalil War broke out, I was one
of the few people called up to give you a proportion.
