Motzei Shabbos at 2AM
we put the clocks back and DST ends in Israel.
Lech Lecha
We ended last week’s
Parsha with the birth of Avram and the death of Noach when Avram was 58 years
old. He was one of the few from the family of Shem who did not participate the
revolt against G-D building the Migdal Bavel and thus kept the original
language of creation, Hebrew. We start our Parsha when Avram is 75years old but
will retrogress to the business of Avram and the capture of Lot 5 years
previously. Remember no early or late in Torah.
12:1 Now the LORD said unto
Abram: 'Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred, and from thy
father's house, unto the land that I will show thee.
It happens that a family will travel from country to country.
My grandfather and grandmother were born in Prague. He worked in Berlin, where
my father was born and then ended up until 1938 CE living in Vienna.
Eventually, my father fled to the States and my grandfather followed by my
father’s guarantee. So too in our Parsha it could be that Terach and Avram
would leave their kindred in Haran and move to Canaan. However, Terach remained
in Haran and it is Avram who is commanded to leave his greater family and his
father’s house and go into a strange land.
Rav Alex
Yisrael Shlita writes: God's command is
worded in a rather strange manner. God specifies that he must go:
"From your land, from your birthplace and from your father's
house." The Ramban comments on the ordering of this
verse. It seems wrong. When one is departing from one's
home, first one leaves home itself, then one's birthplace, and later, at the
border crossing, one leaves one's country. Why is the order reversed
in our text?
The
Ramban explains that this verse is written in this way to stress the difficulty
and pain of leaving one's home. The order is not listed
geographically. Rather, it is an ascending scale of heart wrenching
departure:
"Because it is difficult for a person to
leave the country in which one has lived, one's social group, the familiar
environment. But it is even harder to leave the place where one was
born. The hardest thing is to leave parents."
2 And
I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless thee, and make thy name
great; and be thou a blessing.
In this new land, childless 65year old Sarai and 75year old
Avram will become a great nation. Rashi basically states that one who is
traveling does not have time to have children, acquire wealth or be in a place
long enough to be a great nation.
3 And
I will bless them that bless thee, and him that curses thee will I curse; and
in thee shall all the families of the earth be blessed.'
Even more so those who curse you will get a curse from HASHEM
and you will be blessed. ATTENTION Hamas, Hezballah, Iran, Syria, Yemen, Iraq,
China, Russia and others the above Pasuk is a warning to you just incase you
never hear of Ibrahim in Arabic. The blessings and curses go according to 21:12 And God said unto Abraham: 'Let it not be grievous in
thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah
saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall seed be called to
thee. So there we see Yishmael is sent away
and Yitzchak becomes the only son of Avraham for spiritual inheritance.
4 So
Abram went, as the LORD had spoken unto him; and Lot went with him; and Abram
was seventy and five years old when he departed out of Haran. 5 And
Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his brother's son, and all their substance
that they had gathered, and the souls that they had gotten in Haran; and they
went forth to go into the land of Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they
came.
Lot at this time was his Nephew and forester child as Haran
jumped into the fire only after Avram was in the fire but his hesitation on a
Kiddush HASHEM caused his death by a Kiddush HASHEM instead of living a Kiddush
HASHEM like Avram/Avraham.
6 And
Abram passed through the land unto the place of Shechem, unto the terebinth of
Moreh. And the Canaanite was then in the land.
As a shepherd, he moved around freely not affected by the
wicked people of Canaan but spreading righteousness in the world and making
followers.
7 And
the LORD appeared unto Abram, and said: 'Unto thy seed will I give this land';
and he built there an altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
What faith for there is no seed or continuation at this point
to Avram. He thanks HASHEM for traveling on a journey and reaching the area of destination.
8 And
he removed from thence unto the mountain on the east of Beth-el, and pitched
his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Ai on the east; and he built there an
altar unto the LORD, and called upon the name of the LORD.
He is north east of Yerushalayim.
9 And
Abram journeyed, going on still toward the South. 10 And there was a
famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn there; for the
famine was sore in the land.
Through the time of Avraham and Yitzchak there was no sign of
aging on a human.
11 And
it came to pass, when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto
Sarai his wife: 'Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look
upon. 12 And it will come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee,
that they will say: This is his wife; and they will kill me, but thee they will
keep alive.
Like the behavior of Hamas today who murder upon a whim, if
one wanted a wife of a beautiful woman, he would murder the husband and take
the wife by force. For there is no fear of G-D.
13 Say,
I pray thee, thou art my sister; that it may be well with me for thy sake, and
that my soul may live because of thee.'
He hid her in a chest but the customs inspector opened up the
box and the news went to Pharaoh for she was radiant beautiful.
14 And
it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the
woman that she was very fair. 15 And the princes of Pharaoh saw her,
and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's
house. 16 And he dealt well with Abram for her sake; and he had
sheep, and oxen, and he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and
she-asses, and camels.
Pharaoh gave presents to her “brother” for her.
17 And
the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great plagues because of Sarai
Abram's wife.
Rashi writes here the answer to my question in the next Pasuk. And
the Lord plagued Pharaoh…[with] great plagues: He
was stricken with the plague of “ra’athan,” making intercourse harmful to
him. Gen. Rabbah (41:2) As
well as his household: lit. and his house. As the
Targum states: and upon the people of his house, (and its Midrashic
interpretation (Tan. Lech Lecha 8) is that this includes its walls, pillars, and utensils. In an old Rashi). on account
of Sarai: [The
words עַל דְבַר
שָׂרַי mean literally] according to her words: she would say to the
angel, “Strike,” and he would strike. [from Tan. Lech
Lecha 5]
18 And
Pharaoh called Abram, and said: 'What is this that thou hast done unto me? why
didst thou not tell me that she was thy wife?
Women could not give birth. His household became ill. I don’t
recall the Medrash if he knew from a dream or Sarai told him the truth.
19 Why
did you say: She is my sister? so that I took her to be my wife; now therefore
behold thy wife, take her, and go thy way.'
He explained his fears.
20 And
Pharaoh gave men charge concerning him; and they brought him on the way, and
his wife, and all that he had.
He left Egypt with his
wife, enriched, having servants and animals with Hagar the daughter of Pharaoh
and accompanied by soldiers to protect his riches.
13:1 And Abram
went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all that he had, and Lot with him,
into the South. 2 And Abram was very rich in
cattle, in silver, and in gold.
Avram was promised wealth and a family. Now the first part of
the promise is being fulfilled.
3 And he went on his journeys from the South even to
Beth-el, unto the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between
Beth-el and Ai; 4 unto the place of
the altar, which he had made there at the first; and Abram called there on the
name of the LORD.
He was to thank HASHEM for his wealth. 5 And Lot also, who went with Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. 6 And the land was not able to bear them, that they might dwell together; for their substance was great, so that they could not dwell together.
There wealth was so great that Lot and Avraham had to separately
graze their animals.
7 And there was a strife between the herdsmen of
Abram's cattle and the herd men of Lot's cattle. And the Canaanite and the
Perizzite dwelt then in the land. 8 And
Abram said unto Lot: 'Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee,
and between my herdsmen and thy herd men; for we are brethren.
The strife was Halachic. Avram muzzled his animals near
fields owned by the Bnei Canaan. Lot said, “I will inherit this land, it is not
thievery” but the shepherds of Avram said, “The inequity of the people of
Canaan is not yet finished.” Therefore, eating from their land is thievery.
9 Is not the whole land before thee? separate thyself,
I pray thee, from me; if thou wilt take the left hand, then I will go to the
right; or if thou take the right hand, then I will go to the left.'
My nephew, we are family, why fight? The land is large take
which portion you want and I will take the other.
10 And Lot lifted up his eyes, and beheld all the plain
of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, before the LORD destroyed
Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt, as
thou go unto Zoar. 11 So Lot chose
him all the plain of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; and they separated
themselves the one from the other.
Sodom according to my thought was on the current Jordanian side
of the Dead Sea. Springs came down from the mountains there and was very
fertile. Sodom welcomed him because of what happened before with the four kings
and it was an ancient version of modern Las Vegas.
12 Abram dwelt in the land of Canaan, and Lot dwelt in
the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as far as Sodom. 13 Now the men of Sodom were wicked and sinners against
the LORD exceedingly.
I wonder if Avram had gone to Sodom, he could of gotten them
to repent or were they too far gone and his Mussar and straight path would go
into one ear and out the other?
14 And the LORD said unto Abram, after that Lot was
separated from him: 'Lift up now thine eyes, and look from the place where thou
art, northward and southward and eastward and westward; 15 for all the land which thou see, to thee will I give
it, and to thy seed forever. 16 And
I will make thy seed as the dust of the earth; so that if a man can number the
dust of the earth, then shall thy seed also be numbered. 17 Arise, walk through the land in the length of it and
in the breadth of it; for unto thee will I give it.'
Walk the land and claim it from the border of the river in
Egypt to the Euphrates and a mountain on the current Turkish-Lebanese border in
the west and what is Jordan today.
18 And Abram moved his tent, and came and dwelt by the
terebinths of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built there an altar unto the
LORD.
This is sometime during
or after the year 2023 of creation.
14:1 And
it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar,
Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim,
This was in the year 2018 of creation and Avram lives in Haran.
Lot is his nephew and trading partner in Sodom taking goods from Europe and the
East through Canaan towards Africa.
2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with
Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim,
and the king of Bela--the same is Zoar. 3 All
these came as allies unto the vale of Siddim--the same is the Salt Sea. 4 Twelve years they served Chedorlaomer, and in the
thirteenth year they rebelled. 5 And
in the fourteenth year came Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, and
smote the Rephaim in Ashteroth-karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in
Shaveh-kiriathaim, 6 and the Horites
in their mount Seir, unto El-pHaran, which is by the wilderness. 7 And they turned back, and came to En-mishpat--the
same is Kadesh--and smote all the country of the Amalekites, and also the
Amorites, that dwelt in Hazazon-tamar.
Amalek would be centuries later from Esav and Eliphaz but we
are told this here for geographical identification that the conquest of the
four kings was as far west as Tel Arad and as far south to the area of modern
Aqaba. Rabbi Yacov Ben Porat Shlita in his shiur explained the ancient reasons
for war. Instead of taxing one’s people like the USSR did was to impose taxes
on Eastern Europe. So too the four kings vs. the five kings.
8 And there went out the king of Sodom, and the king of
Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the king of Zeboiim, and the king of
Bela--the same is Zoar; and they set the battle in array against them in the
vale of Siddim; 9 against Chedorlaomer
king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch
king of Ellasar; four kings against the five. 10 Now the vale of Siddim was full of slime pits; and
the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell there, and they that remained
fled to the mountain.
Both the kings of Sodom and Amora made a joke of Avram surviving
the fiery furnace as a fairy tale. They fell into sink holes around or after
Ein Gedi. Once one fell in it was usually their end. At the end of the war, the
people returned, Avram and others rescued them and at that time they believed
in miracles.
11 And they took all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah,
and all their victuals, and went their way. 12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt
in Sodom, and his goods, and departed.
Lot was taken captive.
13 And there came one that had escaped, and told Abram
the Hebrew--now he dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre the Amorite, brother of
Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were confederate with Abram.
The escapee was Og who was a giant and the soldiers of the
four kings were afraid of him. He set his eye on pretty Sarai and hoped that
Avram would die and he would take her.
14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken
captive, he led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and
eighteen, and pursued as far as Dan.
The number sounds correct because he spread his Torah and had
followers. Even though Rashi says it was only Eliezer we see later about his
men taking the spoils.
15 And he divided himself against them by night, he and
his servants, and smote them, and pursued them unto Hobah, which is on the left
hand of Damascus. 16 And he brought
back all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot, and his goods, and
the women also, and the people.
This was a Middle East route like the Six Day War and as in Bechukosai
about 5 chasing 100 and a hundred chasing 10,000.
17 And the king of Sodom went out to meet him, after his
return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, at
the vale of Shaveh--the same is the King's Vale.
After the rescue from the sink hole.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem brought forth bread and
wine; and he was priest of God the Most High. 19 And he blessed him, and said: 'Blessed be Abram of
God Most High, Maker of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God the Most High, who hath delivered thine enemies
into thy hand.' And he gave him a tenth of all.
Shem was the king of Salem which would become Yerushalayim.
21 And the king of Sodom said unto Abram: 'Give me the
persons, and take the goods to thyself.' 22 And
Abram said to the king of Sodom: 'I have
lifted up my hand unto the LORD, God Most High, Maker of heaven and
earth, 23 that I will not take a
thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught that is thine, lest thou shouldest say: I
have made Abram rich;
Avram was a man of means as he funded students and servants and
he did not have to keep the spoils after 10% went to charity.
24 save only that which the young men have eaten, and
the portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, let them
take their portion.'
To pay the outlay and
commercial loses of his allies as they had to take work time to make or buy
weapons and lost production and sales time.
15:1 After
these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a vision, saying: 'Fear
not, Abram, I am thy shield, thy reward shall be exceeding great.' 2 And Abram said: 'O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give me,
seeing I go hence childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?'
It is nice that YOU are my KING, HELPER, SAVIOR, SHIELD
(Shemona Esray Prayer) but what good is wealth if my servant Eliezer inherits
it and I have no offspring.
3 And Abram said: 'Behold, to me Thou hast given no
seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine heir.' 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him,
saying: 'This man shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of
thine own bowels shall be thine heir.'
You will produce an heir from your own seed.
5 And He brought him forth abroad, and said: 'Look now
toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able to count them'; and He said
unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'
He showed him that the position of Jupiter of the day Avram
was born would make him childless but changing his name to Avraham on that day
would have Jupiter in another position for that name and he would have
children.
6 And he believed in the LORD; and He counted it to him
for righteousness. 7 And He said
unto him: 'I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give
thee this land to inherit it.' 8 And
he said: 'O Lord GOD, whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?'
I am one simple man, how will I know that this land of Canaan
will belong to me?
9 And He said unto him: 'Take Me a heifer of three
years old, and a she-goat of three years old, and a ram of three years old, and
a turtle-dove, and a young pigeon.' 10 And
he took him all these, and divided them in the midst, and laid each half over
against the other; but the birds divided he not. 11 And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses,
and Abram drove them away.
He made the requested Korbanos and had to protect the meat
from vultures, eagles, crows, ravens, hawks and other birds of prey. This
exhausted him.
12 And it came to pass, that, when the sun was going
down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, a dread, even a great darkness,
fell upon him. 13 And He said unto
Abram: 'Know of a surety that thy seed shall be a stranger in a land that is
not theirs, and shall serve them; and they shall afflict them four hundred
years;
G-D is telling him, his future and 400years of his seed. The
night is the 15th of Nissan.
14 and also that nation, whom they shall serve, will I
judge; and afterward shall they come out with great substance. 15 But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace; thou shalt
be buried in a good old age. 16 And
in the fourth generation they shall come back hither; for the iniquity of the
Amorite is not yet full.'
The Bnei Canaan have a right to this land until then,
430years in the future. (For the sin of the spies the entrance into the land
will be 470years forward.)
17 And it came to pass, that, when the sun went down,
and there was thick darkness, behold a smoking furnace, and a flaming torch
that passed between these pieces. 18 In
that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'Unto thy seed have I
given this land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river
Euphrates; 19 the Kenite, and the
Kenizzite, and the Kadmonite, 20 and
the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the Rephaim, 21 and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the
Girgashite, and the Jebusite.'
In the future, all these
nations will be removed but in the first redemption only 7 of the 10 will be
removed. We now return to the future and no early or late in Torah. Hagar has
come up with Avram from Egypt.
16:1 Now Sarai
Abram's wife bore him no children; and she had a handmaid, an Egyptian, whose
name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said unto Abram:
'Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray thee, unto
my handmaid; it may be that I shall be built up through her.' And Abram
hearkened to the voice of Sarai. 3 And
Sarai Abram's wife took Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt
ten years in the land of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his
wife. 4 And he went in unto Hagar,
and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived, her mistress was
despised in her eyes. 5 And Sarai
said unto Abram: 'My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and
when she saw that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge
between me and thee.'
At this point, Sarai reached menopause and her hope of producing
an offspring was gone. But as soon as Hagar became pregnant she became rebellious,
snobby and full of Chutzpah. From being a servant she felt superior.
6 But Abram said unto Sarai: 'Behold, thy maid is in
thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes.' And Sarai dealt harshly
with her, and she fled from her face. 7 And
the angel of the LORD found her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by
the fountain in the way to Shur. 8 And
he said: 'Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, where are you coming from? and whither go
thou?' And she said: 'I flee from the face of my mistress Sarai.'
She met the Angel and he set her straight and tell her
future.
9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Return to
thy mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.' 10 And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'I will
greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be numbered for multitude. 11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Behold,
thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his name
Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard thy affliction.
In the future your children will be so numerous (in billions
that was above and beyond the numbering system that existed then).
12 And he shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall
be against every man, and every man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in
the face of all his brethren.' 13 And
she called the name of the LORD that spoke unto her, Thou art a God of seeing;
for she said: 'Have I even here seen Him that sees Me?' 14 Wherefore the well was called 'Beer-lahai-roi;
behold, it is between Kadesh and Bered.
This is the basic nature of Yishmael and it appears within
Islam.
15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name
of his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16
And Abram was fourscore and six years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
Avraham is now 86 and with
his wealth can raise his son. He has Eliezer and other servants taking care of
the animals.
17:1 And when
Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto
him: 'I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and be thou wholehearted. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and thee, and
will multiply thee exceedingly.' 3 And
Abram fell on his face; and God talked with him, saying: 4 'As for Me, behold, My covenant is with thee, and
thou shalt be the father of a multitude of nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but
thy name shall be Abraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have I made
thee.
Change the name from childless Avram to father of nations
Avraham and your astrology and luck will change. You will father Yitzchak too
and the Brahmans and others of the east.
6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will
make nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7 And I will establish My covenant between Me and thee
and thy seed after thee throughout their generations for an everlasting
covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after
thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting
possession; and I will be their God.'
After 400 years plus, your children will return and possess
the land.
9 And God said unto Abraham: 'And as for thee, thou
shalt keep My covenant, thou, and thy seed after thee throughout their
generations. 10 This is My covenant,
which ye shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee: every male
among you shall be circumcised. 11 And
ye shall be circumcised in the flesh of your foreskin; and it shall be a token
of a covenant betwixt Me and you.
Unlike the ancient Egyptians, Assyrians, Babylonians, Medes,
Persians, Greeks and Romans, you will last and prosper forever.
12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised
among you, every male throughout your generations, he that is born in the
house, or bought with money of any foreigner, that is not of thy seed.
The Bris applies to everybody in your house including your
bonded servants.
13 He that is born in thy house, and he that is bought
with thy money, must needs be circumcised; and My covenant shall be in your
flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And
the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin,
that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken My covenant.'
There were in the last few centuries a number of Reform and Atheists
that refused to preform a Bris on their children but it should not be the eight
day old child who continued to adulthood in his father’s blunder but that of
the stubborn stiff-necked father who should be blamed. For obviously if he treated
his son like a Goy, the child grows into a child captured by Goyim.
15 And God said unto Abraham: 'As for Sarai thy wife,
thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her name be. 16 And I will bless her, and moreover I will give thee a
son of her; yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings
of peoples shall be of her.'
Sarai cannot have children but even at the age of 89, she
will have a reversal of menopause.
17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and laughed, and
said in his heart: 'Shall a child be born unto him that is a hundred years old?
and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?'
Since he had knowledge that Yishmael came from him at the age
of 86 he was joyful as he could still produce seed at the age of 99. Remember
until people began to confuse Avraham with Yitzchak there was no sign of aging
people lived and looked well until they expired. The prayer of Avraham for a
sign of age was answered then.
18 And Abraham said unto God: 'Oh that Ishmael might
live before Thee!' 19 And God said:
'Nay, but Sarah thy wife shall bear thee a son; and thou shalt call his name
Isaac; and I will establish My covenant with him for an everlasting covenant
for his seed after him. 20 And as
for Ishmael, I have heard thee; behold, I have blessed him, and will make him
fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget, and
I will make him a great nation.
He loved Yishmael dearly even if he was a wild ass of a man.
But G-D tells him that Yitzchak will be his seed both spiritually and the inheritor
of the land.
21 But My covenant will I establish with Isaac, whom
Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the next year.' 22 And He left off talking with him, and God went up
from Abraham. 23 And Abraham took
Ishmael his son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought
with his money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and circumcised
the flesh of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto
him. 24 And Abraham was ninety years
old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
Despite his advanced age, Avraham was circumcised.
25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he
was circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin.
On that merit of being 13years old, he would rule the Temple
Mount 1300 years. The Al Aksa Mosque was built close to 1335 years ago and that
is the number mentioned in Sefer Daniel.
26 In the selfsame day was Abraham circumcised, and
Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men
of his house, those born in the house, and those bought with money of a
foreigner, were circumcised with him.

Crumpled Pictures by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

Seven-year-old Boaz (fictitious name) came home almost in tears from his
school in Kfar Vradim and handed his mother an envelope.
Kfar Vardim is a small, pastoral, village in the north of Israel founded on
"open thinking" and liberal ideals. An "open, progressive
school" was founded there, which attempted to eliminate divisions of
aptitude, beliefs, and even pupils and teachers. This is where little Boaz
learned.
His mother opened the envelope and found a letter from Boaz's teacher
together with a crumpled picture of a rabbi.
"Dear Mr. and Mrs. C. This morning there were a few of these cards in
our school. Someone must have put them here last night. Your son Boaz got so
very angry when he saw them that he crumpled two of them up and threw them into
the trash can. He said he hates religious rabbis, but he doesn't know why.
"So, I suggested that maybe it would be fun if he did some research and
write a paper on this rabbi. That way he wouldn't judge without knowing the
facts. I hope you agree and would appreciate your feedback."
His mother looked at the crumpled picture. Under it was written in Hebrew;
"The Lubavitcher Rebbe," and on the other side it said
"Commandments to Bring Moshiach: Put on Tefillin every
weekday. Learn Torah. Give Charity," and more.
At first, Boaz's parents just wanted to agree with their son and say no to
the research. After all, those religious pictures had no place in their son's
open school. Their little Boaz was right! But something about the rabbi in that
picture aroused their curiosity.
"What do you think?" his mother asked his father. They talked it
over and finally decided to help Boaz write the paper; maybe it would be fun!
But it wasn't as easy as they thought. First of all, the encyclopedia in
their house had nothing written on "Lubavitch," "Rebbe" or
"Moshiach," and almost nothing on "Commandments". And the
Kfar Vardim public library didn't have much more, except for some Jewish
stories by secular authors.
So, they called a few friends.
After several phone calls they discovered that this Lubavitch Rebbe was
also called the Rebbe of Chabad, had representatives in places called
"Chabad Houses" all over Israel, and there was one in a town not far
from them.
Little Boaz really was beginning to regret that he got everyone into this
mess, but he was also getting curious.
The next day they picked him up after school and drove to the Chabad House
they heard about. They felt a bit uneasy going into a religious Charedi ('ultra-Orthodox')
place but, after all, it was just a small school project.
There they were in for a few surprises. First of all, the rabbi in charge
was young, pleasant and even seemed to be happy; all of which were the opposite
of what they supposed Judaism to be.
Then they discovered that this Lubavitcher Rebbe had written many dozens
of books, some answering questions and others explaining Judaism's plan for the
world.
Plan for the world?
They had always just figured that religious Judaism was insular and
removed of the world. They couldn't figure out what was happening, and if it
wouldn't have been for the young rabbi's beard and hat, they would have thought
they were in the wrong place.
They talked for a while, borrowed several books and pamphlets and returned
home to begin work.
They sat down, got organized and tried to objectively write a proper essay
but each piece of information made them realize they had no idea what Judaism,
especially Chassidic Judaism, was all about.
But what they did understand had its effect.
Especially when they got to the philosophy of the Baal Shem Tov--the
father of Chassidic thought.
He taught that G-d is constantly creating, enlivening, and providing
everything . . . that Torah is G-d's inner wisdom and will . . . and that the
Jews are "part" of G-d Himself (see Tanya, books1-2).
This, and the Baal Shem's use of Jewish mysticism and emphasis on joy, was
not what they were expecting.
They finished the paper, Boaz handed it in to his teacher the next
morning, and their life returned to normal.
Almost.
Boaz's father couldn't get the ideas they had read out of his mind.
Somehow, they made sense to him. He brought it up with his wife but she
didn't agree at all. In fact, she found the ideas abhorrent.
Little Boaz was in the middle. So, the topic was rarely discussed at home.
It continued this way for several months, until one day Mrs. C. told her
husband that she saw an advertisement for a three-day seminar in Jewish
mysticism at a place called "Ascent" in the northern Israel
city of Tsfat. She signed up for herself and her husband, explaining to him,
"I figured that mysticism might be interesting. So why not?"
Anyway, the last day of the seminar found Mrs. C. convinced that Judaism
has a soul and Mr. C aware that he wasn't really Jewish! He revealed that his
father had been Jewish but not his mother.
Nine months later Mr. C. reappeared at Ascent with his wife but it was
almost impossible to recognize them. He had taken a nine-month leave from work,
converted to Judaism, and now sported a beard, hat, and tzitzit.
His wife looked like someone that had been religious all her life.
All because their precious son had crumpled a picture, and thanks to the
concern of a "liberal, progressive" teacher.

The Magician who helped defeat the Nazis by Judy
Gruen
https://aish.com/the-magician-who-helped-defeat-the-nazis/
The battle against the
Nazis relied on machinery, manpower and a bit of magic.
Jasper
Maskelyne, a celebrated British magician and illusionist, is credited by many
historians with having devised several fantastic acts of camouflage and stage
illusions that helped turn the tide against the Germans, especially during key
battles in North Africa.
Magic
was in his genes. For more than 60 years, the Maskelyne family, including his
father and grandfather, had been considered Britain’s “the first family of
conjuring.” Jasper’s father, John, devised the famous Box Trick, in which a
female assistant vanished from a sealed and inspected cabinet, along with other
tricks that became standard.
On February 14, 1941, when German troops rode
into Tripoli with nearly unstoppable force, they already controlled nearly all
of North Africa. That same evening, Jasper Maskelyne was on stage, appearing to
swallow a succession of razor blades in front of his mesmerized audience. As
London theaters emptied due to the war, Maskelyne tried to enlist, but at 37,
he was considered too old and dismissed as merely a conjurer. But the magician
was determined to play a role. As he wrote, “The outbreak of the war foretold
inevitable misery to everyone. To me, it involved something very strange and
rather alarming—the focusing of my whole imagination and knowledge on the
problem of how best to mobilize the world of magic against Hitler.”
During
a course with the Royal Engineers Camouflage Training and Development Center at
Farnham Castle in Surrey, Maskelyne impressed an army inspector general by
hiding a machine gun bunker in plain sight. After completing the program in
January 1941, Maskelyne shipped out to North Africa with a dozen other
camouflage officers, all with the rank of captain. At that time, war camouflage
was being developed by engineers. Maskelyne was certain that if he could hide
things in plain sight from an audience only an orchestra’s pit away, he could
deceive German observers from a distance of 15,000 feet in the air or miles
away on land.
In
North Africa, the magician was expected to entertain the troops, but he also
created a Camouflage Experimental Section, working with a hand-picked group
that included a cartoonist, pottery worker, electrical engineer, chemist, and
stage scenery designer. A History Channel documentary about
Maskelyne referred to “the gang,” as they were known, as “undisciplined,
unorthodox, and unwanted by the mainstream military establishment, but they had
guts, glory, and imagination.”
The gang wasn’t called into action until June
1941. Then, British ships at Alexandria Harbor in Egypt became prime targets
for the Luftwaffe, and Maskelyne was asked to make the harbor, comprised of
hundreds of buildings and spanning many miles, “disappear.” Instead, he and the
gang created a decoy harbor a few miles away, using mud, canvas, and cardboard.
It was designed and lit to resemble Alexandria’s naval buildings, with ground
lights connected to the Pharos Lighthouse (one of the seven wonders of the
ancient world), where they could be controlled. Electric charges were set
underground to simulate bomb explosions.
On June 22, the British turned off all the
lights in Alexandria but turned on the lights over the decoy harbor. The
Luftwaffe took the bait, and as they flew over, the decoy ships were blown up
by remote control. This convinced the Germans they had the right target, and
they continued to drop bombs on the fake harbor for three nights running.
Maskelyne was promoted to Major and earned the respect he craved from his
superiors.
The magician also used optical illusions to
help achieve victory. The Suez Canal--a vital link in the British supply
chain--was under attack by the Germans. Maskelyne was asked to extend the range
of 90 searchlights along the waterway so that British gunners could more easily
spot oncoming enemy planes. Instead, Maskelyne used a trick of illusion that
was already nearly a century old. He and the gang cut a series of reflective
mirrors and attached them to searchlights, turning them into blinding strobe
lights that could daze and temporarily blind enemy pilots. This dazzling set of
beams, known as the Whirling Spray, would hide the Suez Canal in an ocean of
blinding light.

The battle for El Alamein was a crucial win for the
Allies, and General Archibald Wavell asked Maskelyne to make tanks invisible to
Germans in the desert. Flat, featureless, and completely open, the desert is a
tough place for camouflage. Maskelyne’s gang designed “a sun shield,” two
“wings” that closed over real tanks, making them appear to be innocent convoy
vehicles. To rub out the tracks made by the tanks, they added a spiky chain
mail device to make the tracks look like those from trucks.
General Wavell then amassed a huge convoy of
“harmless transport” trucks opposite a weakness in the Italian front line,
stopping an enemy offensive into Cairo before it began. Maskelyne was jubilant:
“I danced with joy. War magic was coming into wartime fashion at last and I
knew this was only the first example of what we could do.”
But by late June 1942, the Germans were still winning
the African continent, having pushed the British army back 60 miles west of
Alexandria. To create ambushes and confuse and trap the enemy, Maskelyne and
the gang hid explosives in trails of camel and donkey dung along the roads.
While hardly a grand illusion, it did the job.
The magician’s greatest success occurred in July 1942
during the battle over El Alamein, then under German control. Land, middle east
oil, and the course of the war were all at stake. This battle would settle the
fate of North Africa, and British Field Marshall Bernard Montgomery desperately
needed to capture it back.
British supply lines were located in the north, but
Allies wanted the Germans to expect an attack from the south. Maskelyne wrote,
“The biggest drama in which I ever played a humble part was being played on a
grand scale and villainy was already beginning to know that the final hour of
reckoning was at hand.”
To create the illusion of an attack
being planned in the south, “the gang” built dummy tanks, guns, aircraft, men,
even a pipeline of steel cans.
This decoy army was so convincing
that the Germans placed their main forces nearby. Meanwhile, Maskelyne
masterminded the real deception: thousands of soldiers and tanks—camouflaged as
dummy transports--were being moved in plain view of enemy forces. When the
British attacked in the north as planned on October 23, Germany’s Field
Marshall Erwin Rommel, known as the Desert Fox, had been outfoxed. The
ill-prepared German forces retreated to Libya and the British savored their
first real victory of the war. This was Jasper Maskelyne’s last grand illusion
in the desert, turning a stalemate into a tremendous victory for British
forces, psychologically and militarily.
After the war Maskelyne returned to
England and to the stage. He asked for and received permission to continue to
dress in British Army uniform when performing on stage again. Though he wrote
an autobiography, Jasper Maskelyne never revealed his magician’s secrets. In
fact, his subterfuges and war illusions are classified as top secret by the
Official Secrets Act, not to made public till 2046.
One
of the positive developments of the war is looking for marriage. Many of the
soldiers, including the reservist, became aware of the fact that they have no
personal family other than siblings and parents. Maybe the TV show of matching
30 to 39years old males with similar aged females will end because of many
marriages.
Suddenly
soldiers want to look for a marriage partner instead of going to a Rage nature
party all night. My Facebook page has 5 or more posts of soldiers marrying on time
or early due to the war. One married one who fought the terrorists on Simchas
Torah now has a new daughter and one injured after he woke up from serious condition
saw his new baby. When the pool of souls is exhausted, the Moshiach will come.
From
Dalit a few miracles. An amazing story of Noa and Naam (story also had Neam and
Noam and that is a popular name) Hanukkah from Kibbutz Meflasim.
On
that Black Saturday, Neam went to work in Ashkelon and was shot by a terrorist
squad. Noa, his wife, nine months of pregnancy, stayed at home. Within a few
minutes, alarms started at a crazy pace and she challenged herself to the
dimension, at this time she received a call from Naam "Noa sorry, they
shot me."
Noam
got out of the car and sought help, an officer passing by picked him up in the
direction of Barzilai Hospital. On the way, they encountered more terrorists,
and the officer was also shot. At this stage, Noa had already understood that
dozens of terrorists had infiltrated Kibbutz, and she only wanted to know that
Naam was saved. He calls her again and she realizes the officer has been shot
and is missing, she is pleading with him to get help and stay alive.
At
this stage the first miracle happened, Shlomi Shashi from the kibbutz heard the
sirens and returned to levels. On the way saw Noam injured in the car. Without
thinking twice, he got out of his car, got into the officer's vehicle and took
Noam to the hospital.
At
the same time, the water went down to Noa. The Kibbutz paramedic and the brave
readiness class, managed to rescue Noa and send her to the hospital. Noa lay
down next to Na'am, when he was asleep and breathing and was afraid that she
had lost both him and their baby.
About
a week ago the second miracle happened - Naam woke up, and a few days later, on
18.10, the anniversary of Naam and Noa, their son was born.
"My
Lord is with you this day, the heavens and the earth, the living and the death,
I will present before you the blessing and the curse and the choice of life, so
that you and your seed may live."
Congratulations
Noa and Naam

Israel is waiting for the Eisenhower
Strike Force still. Six Chinese Warships close by. The conflict is bigger than
we thought. Right now, there are 5 fronts. Lebanon, Syria, Yehuda-Shomron-East
Yerushalayim, Gaza and Yemen but Iraq and Iran could also be in the fray.
General Brick (who warned for the past few years that the IDF was not prepared

I have to decide soon on whether or
not to postpone my planned trip to the States. I have put my cut off date as
Nov. 1st. If we go into Gaza before that, I postpone but if not, I
may go as this whole war could take months and I have things to do in the
States. Still it might not be wise to travel alone. While tossing and turning
in my sleep I managed to dislocate the grain in the inner ear that was knocked
out in a traffic accident 26.5 years ago and I feel like I am a top. This means
in terms of getting to the shelter at the speed of a cane. Why are civilians
getting PTSD? Maybe too many stories on the TV? Maybe the booms of iron dome
and the explosions? When I was in the army the ground for miles used to shake
from the Howitzers going off and the booms were just as loud if not louder but
I had a job to do. Being an elder, I have no job related to the booms so when I
returned to my shower room once or twice I braced myself for a boom. I guess
that is how civilian PTSD starts and we are far from the war zones.
Who is going in first? Golani 51 and
13. Both took a heavy toll on Simchas Torah but are ready physically and
morally. I served as an auxiliary medic with 51 and these guys are tough and
they made this former coward strong. My oldest son was with 13.

My daughter is the kindergarten
teacher of the children of two nurses, miraculous
misses of survivors of shrapnel and bullets missing the critical organs, veins
or arteries by millimeters or a centimeter or so. This reminds me the story of
my friend Eliyahu of Bank Discount Ezor Bet, Ashdod 50 years ago. The first
time in the Yom Kippur War a shell exploded burying him under some sand in his
foxhole. The second time when he was sent home, the bullet went through his
stomach area missing vital organs.
The north had incidents galore last
night. In the south, in the northern part of the Gaza strip, a Givati force

In Africa, just
in Africa, Islamist groups killed 19,091 people in 2022. Many thousands more
were killed in Afghanistan, Pakistan and other countries. Has anyone seen or
heard of a protest for them? By Muslims? By human rights advocates? It didn't
happen. Because it's not about sensitivity to human life. It's about hatred of
Jews. We hope that riots will not occur. But there is a very serious fear that
they indeed will.
