Parsha Tazria Part 1
Time has stopped for us on the 8th day of the dedication of the Mishkan. After the diversion into the Halachos of Kashrus minus the signs of Kosher Birds that I added as an afterthought the last minute before publication of the Blogspot, we continue on with the laws of a woman giving birth and then the laws of Tzoras. It is mistranslated as Leprosy. In some cases it is more like Psoriasis.
12:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If a woman be delivered, and bear a man-child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of the impurity of her sickness shall she be unclean.
Sickness is a mistranslation. She is Tuma Niddah. Chabad translates not sickness but Niddah in English as: menstrual flow. It appears to me that during the time of the Mikdash she would go to Mikveh before the Bris.
3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin shall be circumcised.
Barring a problem if the baby was born in the minus before the entrance or leaving of Shabbos or Yom Tov and the possibility of the child being underweight or jaundice, the Bris would take place on the 8th day.
4 And she shall continue in the blood of purification three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purification be fulfilled.
If she has blood during this time, it is considered from the wound of healing and not the impurity of Niddah and she is clean.
5 But if she bear a maid-child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her impurity; and she shall continue in the blood of purification threescore and six days.
The mother of the boy should have had this decree, but due to the Bris, her time of impurity was lowered.
6 And when the days of her purification are fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first year for a burnt-offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtle-dove, for a sin-offering, unto the door of the tent of meeting, unto the priest. 7 And he shall offer it before the LORD, and make atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the fountain of her blood. This is the law for her that bears, whether a male or a female.
Supposedly during the pain of birth a woman might swear off of having children or relations with the husband and therefore she had to bring this. Practically it appears to be more a rejoicing for the birth and thanksgiving for the child. In any case, the Korban is required.
8 And if her means suffice not for a lamb, then she shall take two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons: the one for a burnt-offering, and the other for a sin-offering; and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.
The poorer people bring the Korban of lesser value. After the Korban or today after the Mikveh, the woman giving childbirth has become purified.
13:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 When a man shall have in the skin of his flesh a rising, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it becomes in the skin of his flesh the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought unto Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests.
I was listening to this week’s Parsha from Rabbi Yosef Ben Porat Shlita. He started his Drasha here. For words have consequences. The skin disease and the mold on the walls of the house and the clothing come from Lashon HaRa. This is the only time that the Torah deals with individual illnesses and the Cohain is here to diagnosis a skin malady. Why didn’t the Torah teach the Cohain other illnesses? Rather the Cohain is a person to help the Bnei Yisrael atone from sins through the Korbanos and to teach Torah. Tsoras is a spiritual disease and that is why the Cohain comes to inspect it and declare it Tahor or Tumay.
Reminder Lashon HaRa is on a true happening (Emes). This is the “Bacheres” or white spot. Others that are more wicked get “Set” or worse “Sapachas” which comes from false slander.
3 And the priest shall look upon the plague in the skin of the flesh; and if the hair in the plague be turned white, and the appearance of the plague be deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is the plague of leprosy; and the priest shall look on him, and pronounce him unclean.
This is the easy case to declare.
4 And if the bright spot be white in the skin of his flesh, and the appearance thereof be not deeper than the skin, and the hair thereof be not turned white, then the priest shall shut up him that hath the plague seven days.
Theoretically, he is Tahor but since it might develop to become Tuma, he is closed within his house seven days. Maybe he is getting enough punishment for Lashon HaRa and will do Teshuva and stay in a Tahor State.
5 And the priest shall look on him the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague stay in its appearance, and the plague be not spread in the skin, then the priest shall shut him up seven days more. 6 And the priest shall look on him again the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague be dim, and the plague be not spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean: it is a scab; and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.
After 14 days of being away from people and repenting for Lashon HaRa, he is declared clean and does not need to bring a Korban.
7 But if the scab spread abroad in the skin, after that he hath shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again. 8 And the priest shall look, and, behold, if the scab be spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is leprosy.
He has the State of Tsoras. He is declared Tumay and must keep away from all in society. He may have had this from Audacity of feeling superior and putting others down. He is now repelled by society and maybe will humble himself.
9 When the plague of leprosy is in a man, then he shall be brought unto the priest. 10 And the priest shall look, and, behold, if there be a white rising in the skin, and it have turned the hair white, and there be quick raw flesh in the rising, …
58 And the garment, or the warp, or the woof, or whatsoever thing of skin it be, which thou shalt wash, if the plague be departed from them, then it shall be washed the second time, and shall be clean. 59 This is the law of the plague of leprosy in a garment of wool or linen, or in the warp, or in the woof, or in any thing of skin, to pronounce it clean, or to pronounce it unclean.
The Metzora is declared by the Cohain. His pronouncement makes it clean or unclean.
Please Note: Since this week’s Tsaras is continued in Parsha Metzora next week on most non-leap years the two Parshiyos are combined. There will be also hopefully be two more miracle stories too.

Remember plan your cleaning-cooking time with spare. I usually do my rug spray on Rosh Chodesh. Erev Rosh Chodesh vacuumed the rug and turned it upside down. My grandson called that he wanted to wash and vacuum his car. My wife and Menashe washed my car. The vacuum will be tomorrow but I had not enough battery left for the after scrub and clean the rug vacuum so I delayed it. But can you at this point spare a day or day plus in your cleaning?
Most of my shopping minus a few items has been completed. This year at a greater expense, I ordered spelt Seder Matzos. I do not have a bad gluten problem but as one ages, the spelt Matzos ease the digestion. During Pesach, I do not take natural or homeopathic medications.
The best thing is to make sure one buys things the week before Pesach like Horseradish, radish, parsley, celery, lettuce and the ingredients of the Charoses. They are usually ground walnuts, ground almonds, dates, raisins, wine, cinnamon, ginger and one can add hazel nuts, pomegranates, figs if dried kosher for Pesach.
What is left to discuss the Seder Korban Pesach and the Seder itself. Baalei Teshuva or other new comers to Judaism remember that for the Seder, one needs special Shmura Matzos and not regular kosher for Pesach Matzos.
And the most important thing is to conduct the Seder per the Haggadah and make sure the children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews see a proper one according to the order and they are the main participates. Their questions should not be ignored and they should get answers as it written. “And you shall tell your son on this day saying, ‘For this G-D has released me from Egypt!’.”

Simchas Torah is of the most exciting days for Synagogue Goers. Rabbi Herzl of Sderot must have heard the sirens but he was at the Synagogue early on Simchas Torah. He was setting three of his Sifrei Torah into the portions to be read. One at the end of Devarim, the second for Beresheis and the third for Shemini Atzeres.
Rabbi Herzl is waiting for the congregation to arrive. He hears shooting in the direction of the Police Station. He goes out to see what is happening. Rabbi Herzl is a stocky man between the age of late fifties to mid-sixty. One can see him walking by the traffic circle where a Toyota pick-up truck loaded with terrorists had driven by five minutes previously. He is outside and hears more shooting. He sees terrorists coming turns back towards the Synagogue and ducks. A bullet wizzes over his head making a hole in the lamp post. He continues back tracking towards the Schul. He sees another pick-up and is ready to run but this time, he takes a bullet to his back going right past his heart rupturing his spleen and out the front of his shirt and suit.
The Rabbi manages to return to Synagogue. He is alone and losing blood. He will keep the shirt and the suit with the blood on it to show off his miracle on TV. But he has by now called and ambulance that will not come and he is getting weaker lying on the floor.
He is praying to HASHEM that he has more service for HASHEM in the community and though his lectures that bring Jews closer to Torah and Mitzvos.
Suddenly, a member of the Congregation, who walks two kilometers or a mile and a quarter enters the Schul. The Rabbi says here are my car keys please drive me to the hospital. Without further adieu, the man drives the car from the front of the Synagogue to the more secure back entrance. He helps the Rabbi to his feet and they go to the hospital.
Our story ends with the Rabbi appearing on Arutz 14 television recalling is miracle of Simchas Torah and showing all the bullet holes in his blood stained coat and the bullet holes of entrance and exit in his shirt.

This was a long story. First Shalom the paramedic from Givati tells it from his point of view. Shalom has entered as a paramedic in the Givati Brigade. He and his unit are hiding all night in a grove of trees (in the picture they look like non-fruit bearing or off season). The tension and adrenaline was so high that nobody thought of sleeping that night before the battle.
Shalom and his unit are following behind the tanks. The first tank is a bulldozer tank to clear mines and explosive devices. Aytan Tessler was already in his forties. He had make a retirement party from his unit a number of months before October. In short, he was not supposed to be in 188th anymore. He was not going to be the man sweating in the tank filling up the cannon with shells. But on Oct. 7th, Aytan could not sit at home idle while others went to war. [If you think that Aytan was the only one, you are mistaken. I wanted to go but then I remembered that because my hands shake too much, I gave up my pistol years ago. I looked in the mirror and saw a elderly man with a walker and decided that they no longer could use me on the front lines. My hearing was not really up to a field stethoscope.] Aytan bid his wife and the four Tessler Children farewell and off to the 188th he went. [One of my jobs 44 years ago was to ride in a rescue APC as a paramedic with a tank repair crew Company Zayin 188th of the 7th Brigade on the Golan.] Well Shalom had my old job and to take care of Givati to boot.
While Shalom was out in the field Aytan and his buddies were eating, sleeping, praying and getting ride of their waste products in a small confides of a tank.
Things appear to be going well, Aytan loads and fires the first shell at what looks like a concentration of terrorists. But then all hell breaks loose from all the buildings surrounding the tank. An RPG it’s the rear of the tank. A ball of fire goes right past Aytan’s eyes. Aytan is full of shrapnel and one has pierced his lung making breathing difficult. Aytan passes out but is revived by the commander.
The commander yells for a medic in Hebrew. Shalom and more troops from Givati are hidden in the building behind the tank. Shalom rushes into the tank. However the space is very confining to try to save Aytan. In fact, Shalom is uncertain if he is dealing with a man breathing his last few breathes or not. The prognosis of the Magen Dovid Adom Paramedic is grim.
Shalom does his best to save Aytan. He pulls him out of the tank and stops some bleeding. At the same time, Aytan is being ambushed by gun fire. He shoots back with one hand and with the other drags Aytan. He calls for help. Unknown to Aytan in his concentration on returning fire and saving Aytan, he has been hit and badly injured in his leg.
Shalom calls for help and manages to get Aytan into a building. He feels Aytan’s chest. There is blood in one lung but which? He removes his hearing protectors and puts the stethoscope to his ear. He hears which lung and with a scalpel pierces it to drain the blood. Aytan is breathing on his own but barely. He has to assist Aytan in breathing while evacuating him on his injured foot to safety.
Boom a friendly fire shell explodes nearby. Shalom cannot hear a thing. He does not know if he has suffered permanent or temporary hearing loss. He continues to keep Aytan awake despite the morphine that he has administrated and is continuing to help his breathing.
The stretcher bearers and he are on their way to the 669 helicopter. He helicopter takes Aytan and has him breathing better. By this time Shalom realizes his own injure and is evacuated with Aytan. Aytan loses consciousness. He will be operated upon with most of the shrapnel removed and kept now in an induced coma. Shalom slowly makes a recovery. It is at this point that Shalom wants to learn to be a doctor and go to medical school.
Aytan recovers and two strangers in Gaza now become good friends. Aytan is humbled by his experience and is slowly recovering on a lung and a half from his injuries. Perhaps he will regain more from his injured lung.
Sgt. First Class Yanun and the severely injured engineering soldier.
The story here is similar to that above. Yanun is in a battle and the soldier from engineering is injured and unconscious. He goes and pulls him to safety and is injured quite badly during the evacuation process. Both survive and Yanun has a long recovery process that is still on-going.
Day 187 April 10th Arieh Spitz wakes up after 41days unconscious.
The miracle was told by his mother who spent days praying and believing that he would be OK. Arieh was taken from the battle field and flown to Seroka Hospital with Battalion Doctor from the field within 41minutes from his injuries arrived in the hospital.
“Ari was seriously injured on February 27th, with severe orthopedic injuries. He almost didn't make it. He's been sedated and intubated since February 27th and went through eight different surgeries. Miraculously, they finally woke him up from sedation this week. We had no idea how long it was going to be. His birthday is coming up in two weeks, and now we can truly experience that and Passover with him,”
“When you wake up after 41 days it takes a while for you to actually get back to yourself. First, you ask him what his name is and if he knows who you are. The first words he said to us were “I love you”.
Hopefully more details will be supplied over time. Arieh did not know when he woke up how he was injured and somebody filled in the information that he was missing. Yesterday, the hate filled leftists from ‘Brothers-in-arms’ (name stolen from a helping group for soldiers that disbanded a number of years ago). They tried to confront the 93 year old Rav Dov Landau Shlita. The Yeshiva disguised the cook in the Rabbi’s frock and they chased after him instead of the Tzadik. Only after they left Bnei Brak did they find out that they were chasing rainbows.
