Parsha Shemini, Miracles and Stories, Passover, Swords of Iron Updates

Parsha Shemini

Last week, our Parsha ended with the consecration of the Mishkan and the Cohanim. After a week, Moshe turns over the reigns to Aaron and his sons. On the eight day they are on their own. Our Parsha starts off with Vayehi which means bad things are about to happen.

Without further ado or commentary, I present the narrative of the Pasukim of Chapter 9 and then comment.

9:1 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel; 2 and he said unto Aaron: 'Take thee a bull-calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before the LORD. 3 And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; 4 and an ox and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a meal-offering mingled with oil; for to-day the LORD appears unto you.' 5 And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tent of meeting; and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD. 6 And Moses said: 'This is the thing which the LORD commanded that ye should do; that the glory of the LORD may appear unto you.' 7 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Draw near unto the altar, and offer thy sin-offering, and thy burnt-offering, and make atonement for thyself, and for the people; and present the offering of the people, and make atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.' 8 So Aaron drew near unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. 9 And the sons of Aaron presented the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10 But the fat, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver of the sin-offering, he made smoke upon the altar; as the LORD commanded Moses. 11 And the flesh and the skin were burnt with fire without the camp. 12 And he slew the burnt-offering; and Aaron's sons delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar round about. 13 And they delivered the burnt-offering unto him, piece by piece, and the head; and he made them smoke upon the altar. 14 And he washed the inwards and the legs, and made them smoke upon the burnt-offering on the altar. 15 And the people's offering was presented; and he took the goat of the sin-offering which was for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first. 16 And the burnt-offering was presented; and he offered it according to the ordinance. 17 And the meal-offering was presented; and he filled his hand therefrom, and made it smoke upon the altar, besides the burnt-offering of the morning. 18 He slew also the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which was for the people; and Aaron's sons delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar roundabout, 19 and the fat of the ox, and of the ram, the fat tail, and that which covers the inwards, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver. 20 And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he made the fat smoke upon the altar. 21 And the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved for a wave-offering before the LORD; as Moses commanded. 22 And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people. 24 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

The Bnei Yisrael watched the ceremony on the eight day of the dedication of the Mizbayach. They saw the slaughter of the bull, the Billy-goat slaughtered, meal offering, ram etc. They watched the gathering and sprinkling of the blood of the Korbanos and the flaying of the animals and placing them on the Mizbayach. The Cohanim then blessed the nation with the Berchas Cohanim (that will only be mentioned later in Vayikra) but they knew it from Moshe. Suddenly fire comes down from heaven or spontaneous combustion on the Mizbayach that the people immediately recognized DIVINE Intervention and fell on their faces, “Blessed be the L-RD from HIS Kingdom forever.”

This was the happiest time for Am Yisrael.

10:1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them.

Because of the prohibition of drinking that follows, our Sages of blessed memory deduct that these two sons of Aaron had been drinking and too merry and then offered up the strange fire.

2 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

Like in the army, you are given certain orders. Straying to the right or the left can result in your death or that of innocent civilians.

3 Then Moses said unto Aaron: 'This is it that the LORD spoke, saying: Through them that are nigh unto Me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.' And Aaron held his peace.

I thought that HASHEM might take either you or I for HIS Glory but instead, HE took your sons. Aaron was speechless. He could not criticize nor praise HASHEM as HASHEM gave him sons and then took them close to HIMSELF.

4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them: 'Draw near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.' 5 So they drew near, and carried them in their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said.

These Leviim were first cousins and called to help for Moshe, Aaron and the two other Cohanim might have to serve HASHEM at any moment and could not be Tumay.

6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons: 'Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither rend your clothes, that ye die not, and that He be not wroth with all the congregation; but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled. 7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you.' And they did according to the word of Moses.

Because you have to serve HASHEM, you cannot mourn and therefore the Nation will mourn in your place.

8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, saying: 9 'Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations. 10 And that ye may put difference between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; 11 and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.'

Service (Avoda) of HASHEM has to be sober and ritually Tahor.

12 And Moses spoke unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left: 'Take the meal-offering that remains of the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy. 13 And ye shall eat it in a holy place, because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the offerings of the LORD made by fire; for so I am commanded. 14 And the breast of waving and the thigh of heaving shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy daughters with thee; for they are given as thy due, and thy sons' due, out of the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the children of Israel.

The Korbanos must be done as commanded without room to maneuver to the right or the left in purity and eaten in a ritually pure place.

15 The thigh of heaving and the breast of waving shall they bring with the offerings of the fat made by fire, to wave it for a wave-offering before the LORD; and it shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, as a due for ever; as the LORD hath commanded.'

There are 24 gifts given to the Kahuna. The breast and right thigh are two of them.

16 And Moses diligently inquired for the goat of the sin-offering, and, behold, it was burnt; and he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron that were left, saying: 17 'Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin-offering in the place of the sanctuary, seeing it is most holy, and He hath given it you to bear the iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? 18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought into the sanctuary within; ye should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.' 19 And Aaron spoke unto Moses: 'Behold, this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before the LORD, and there have befallen me such things as these; and if I had eaten the sin-offering to-day, would it have been well-pleasing in the sight of the LORD? 20 And when Moses heard that, it was well-pleasing in his sight.

Is it fitting for me to eat meat after what has happened today? The death of two sons of Aaron after the joy of having fire come down from heaven to the Mizbayach was a shock equivalent or worse than what happened recently with the Hamas attack on Simchas Torah.

11:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: These are the living things which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. 3 Whatsoever parts the hoof, and is wholly cloven-footed, and chews the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat.

Any animals that possess both properties, one can eat. But having only one excludes that animal.

4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that only chew the cud, or of them that only part the hoof: the camel, because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 5 And the rock-badger, because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 6 And the hare, because she chews the cud but parts not the hoof, she is unclean unto you.

Out of all the animals in the world in all the continents, some were unknown at the time of Moshe, only these three ruminate and not have cloven hooves.

7 And the swine, because he parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, but chews not the cud, he is unclean unto you.

Out of all the animals in the world that do not chew the cud such as the horse, donkey, bear, etc. only the pig/boar has cloven feet. There is a physical animal in the South Seas called a Tapir that is similar in shape to the pig but chews its cud. Many Rabbis say that since we have no tradition of eating this animal, we would forbid it. However, in my humble opinion the Torah seems to approve eating it by definition.

8 Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you.

If you have a US Football known as the pigskin, if it is made that way, it is Tumay and also would be forbidden to play with on Shabbos or Yom Tov.

9 These may ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them may ye eat.

I heard from my Rosh Yeshiva, Rabbi Yacov London ZTZAL, that if the fish has scales, it will have fins. There is one Eel maybe the Moray Eel that has scales in the water but fall off when removed from the water. This time we look at it out of the water it is not kosher. Certainly, we have no traditions regarding eating this eel.

10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that swarm in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are a detestable thing unto you,

This applies to sharks, sturgeons, sting-rays, eels, crabs, sea horses, squid, etc.

11 and they shall be a detestable thing unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in detestation. 12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is a detestable thing unto you. 13 And these ye shall have in detestation among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the great vulture, and the bearded vulture, and the ospray;

The Torah goes on to describe birds of prey.

14 and the kite, and the falcon after its kinds; 15 every raven after its kinds; 16 and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and the hawk after its kinds; 17 and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl; 18 and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the carrion-vulture; 19 and the stork, and the heron after its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

The bat is a mammal but due to the classification of flying like a bird. The  flying squirrel is a glider and not like the bat that flies on its own. Both the squirrel and mouse are considered detestable things similar to what we say creepy crawlers.

Kosher Birds:

https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/3649755/jewish/What-Are-the-Signs-of-a-Kosher-Bird.htm

20 All winged swarming things that go upon all fours are a detestable thing unto you. 21 Yet these may ye eat of all winged swarming things that go upon all fours, which have jointed legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth; 22 even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kinds, and the bald locust after its kinds, and the cricket after its kinds, and the grasshopper after its kinds.

A few times locusts came to Israel. The Yemenites had a tradition and the Ashkenazim from Europe not and they refused to eat them. However, I personally feel that the Ashkenazim should have relied upon the Yemenite Jews as they are Shomer Shabbos GD fearing people.

23 But all winged swarming things, which have four feet, are a detestable thing unto you. 24 And by these ye shall become unclean; whosoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean until even. 25 And whosoever bears aught of the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

All other insects are forbidden to eat from the ant, fly, spider, etc.

26 Every beast which parts the hoof, but is not cloven footed, nor chews the cud, is unclean unto you; every one that touches them shall be unclean. 27 And whatsoever goes upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you; whoso touches their carcass shall be unclean until the even.

There are many mammals that have paws or hooves that are not split that are forbidden unto us to eat and Tumay to the touch.

28 And he that bears the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; they are unclean unto you. 29 And these are they which are unclean unto you among the swarming things that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kinds, 30 and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon.

Chipmunks also fall under the category here of detestable animals.

31 These are they which are unclean to you among all that swarm; whosoever doth touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even.

I assume that this covers reptiles and amphibians.

32 And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean. 33 And every earthen vessel where into any of them falls, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall break. 34 All food therein which may be eaten, that on which water cometh, shall be unclean; and all drink in every such vessel that may be drunk shall be unclean. 35 And everything whereupon any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be broken in pieces; they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto you. 36 Nevertheless a fountain or a cistern wherein is a gathering of water shall be clean; but he who touches their carcass shall be unclean.

The dead detestable things render your utensils Tumay and non-metallic objects that cannot be koshered by fire have to be broken.

37 And if aught of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean. 38 But if water be put upon the seed, and aught of their carcass fall thereon, it is unclean unto you. 39 And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die, he that touches the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even. 40 And he that eats of the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; he also that bears the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

The Tikun (repair) from Tuma of clothing is washing.

41 And every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth is a detestable thing; it shall not be eaten. 42 Whatsoever goes upon the belly, and whatsoever goes upon all fours, or whatsoever hath many feet, even all swarming things that swarm upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are a detestable thing. 43 Ye shall not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

One should always try to be in a state of ritual purity. If you ask why the answer is in the next Pasuk.

44 For I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am holy; neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of swarming thing that moves upon the earth.

Therefore since G-D is Holy keep yourselves Holy!

45 For I am the LORD that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. 46 This is the law of the beast, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that swarms upon the earth; 47 to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.

This whole section and the next few Parshiyos are a distraction from the calamity of the death of the two sons of Aaron.

Parsha HaChodesh (Shemos {Ex.} 12:1-20)

This Parsha signifies the real start of the Torah for Am Yisrael as a nation. Prior to Rosh Chodesh Nisan 2448, we were Bnei Adam, Bnei Noach, Bnei Avos but not yet a nation. Until this time, we are just part of all the Goyim of the world. We are part of Nimrod’s Citizens, Canaan’s Citizens, Egyptian Citizens but not Yisraelim.

Molad for Nisan: Will occur (April 8) Monday Evening 57 Minutes and 7Chalakim After 10 O’clock Jerusalem Time.

Between Purim and Pesach, I like to give a pep talk and some Halachos for the Seder. This year is different from all other years. Gog and Magog is so much closer and so is Moshiach. But getting down to the practical. My wife basically has a good deal of the pantry cleaned and ready. Sugar, salt, tea, pudding, spices, jam, ketchup, mouth wash, coffee, tea, cleaners, dates, wine, and other things kosher LePesach.

My house is basically cleaned for Pesach minus a corner with cat food, Menashe, forester son’s room, parts of the Kitchen and dining rooms. Since Rosh Chodesh is quickly approaching one does not have much time. Our goal is to have a kosher kitchen minus the microwave oven and dining room by Thursday April 18th Yud Nisan. Have you started cleaning, clearing, shopping making plans? Don’t be a slacker!

On the personal front. Rosh Chodesh Nisan is the day that I vacuum the carpet both sides, turn over and spray and scrap the carpet with carpet cleaner.

Getting older. When my kids were three they never would dare take Chametz out of the kitchen-dinette area. Wednesday, my three year old great grandson, Aharon Yehuda Liab, brought a bagel he was eating into my office. I looked at his sweet innocent face and could not get even frustrated. My pleasure was buying a children’s Haggadah for five year old, Yair Avraham. I pointed out to him the letters of the words of the  4 questions and the song in Hebrew. He looked at the numbers of “Who knows one”? song. This is the real reason we have a Seder. “On that day you shall say (to your son) this is what HASHEM did to me when I left Mitzrayim.” I will not be by my children this year for the Seder. I have to show Menashe, forester song, how I conduct a Seder as he has never seen it conducted by me.

Lt. David Yiftah sees you clearly. English Rachamim Pauli

Last week, I left both you and I with a cliff hanger that was rebroadcasted on the morning show Sunday: There is one story that has not been shown on the Israeli TV but advertised for the time of Kabbalas Shabbos (taking upon us Shabbos). It is about a soldier that entered a building, got caught in a firefight. He fell wounded to the floor and could not see. He kept saying Shema Yisrael in his head. He prayed that his unit would not first throw a grenade into the room. THIS DETAIL MAY BE A STORY FROM SGT. FIRST CLASS YANUN BELOW AND CONFUSED WITHIN MY MEMORY.

The story is …

Dovid was leading a group of soldiers into a building. They were spotted by an enemy with an RPG. The RPG was launched into the building and two soldiers died on the spot. Dovid was wounded badly and lost completely his eyesight.

Dovid is brought to the hospital unconscious. Everything seems to be healing. But his eyesight is gone. He has his eyes wide open but cannot see. There was nothing wrong with his optic nerve but it seemed a trauma similar to Ray Charles becoming blind.

The doctors did what they could. Then one day, he could see again. The doctors gave him an eye test. I see the big Three. Then he saw the two and an eight until bingo he was back to being 20/20 or 6/6 in Israel.

His parents were in the room and first his father breaks down in tears and then his mother. The L-RD gave, took away and returned the eyesight.

Another soldier lost sight in one eye and regained it, a miracle in itself but not like David’s.

Another story of a soldier hit with his brothers in arms from a grenade tossed from a paraglider with shrapnel in his chest going on to compete in a triathlon.

Koach Bar and tank number 3 retold in English and condensed R. Pauli

Perhaps a miracle that they survived a prolonged battle against many.

HASHEM gives us miracles daily. Some are simple. I woke up, got up, lost my balance almost fell through the glass pain of the window but caught the window sill in time. It is as simple as that. But had I gone through the window pane what injury could I have lost my life or been crippled. I was saved from danger in a split second.

Bar was the commander of a tank company. On Oct. 7th he and tank number 3 were in charge of 15 square kilometers of turf to defend. Two tanks defending 10 square miles approximately. Like in my days, the maintenance of vehicles was lax. Tank 3 was missing a small cheap part that would have made it work. Instead, it could only travel at 10 km an hour or a crawl. The terrorists easily hit it. It was the burning tank filmed on Oct. 7th. One or two men died and two or three are captive in Gaza.

Bar passed by tank 3. His object was to take out the pick-up trucks entering Israel. It was not easy, hard to aim the tank when one is ducking RPGs. Sometimes trucks were hit. Other times terrorist ran at the tank with grenades and the driver had to crush them under the treads to stay alive. The battle raged for an hour and Bar took up a position defending and saving at least in part one Kibbutz.

The Tank was hit and knocked out of commission. Bar and company commandeered a police vehicle or two and returned back to get another tank out of the garage. Had the tank garrison been fully manned, most of the attack in his area could have been put down instead of two decommissioned tanks.

Amit Bar Zev with a heart of Shrapnel for you. Eng. R. Pauli

Sgt. Amit was a handsome Golani Soldier. His unit was in Gaza. They were taking a break from the fierce fighting that was going on. Unknown to him and his friends, Arab spotters had pin pointed his whereabouts for Mortar fire. The Mortar shell landed square next to him sending a piece of shrapnel into his heart. He was still breathing on his own and conscious when he was brought into a Namer APC where the doctor was. The Namer drove away from the shelling but he had to be operated outside as there was no space for the doctor to properly save him.

Then he lost consciousness and stopped breathing. The doctor and the evacuation medical helicopter kept him going to the hospital. It was decided in the hospital that removing the shrapnel would be more dangerous than leaving it in place. Amit is now humble but he cannot walk much better than I a 76 year old with disabilities. But he is alive a walking. He misses being with his Golani buddies now near Lebanon.

So girls, if you are looking for a man with a heart full of shrapnel just for you, he’s it.

Signs are that things are getting over-heated in the north. There was a larger Thursday crowd shopping for Shabbos and Pesach than usual. People are starting to hoard bottled water and toilet paper. The banks are preparing for a cash run on the automatic machines. This includes the central bank of Israel and the stock market fell by 1.5% and people are purchasing dollars.
