Parsha Shelach Lecha
Last week’s Parsha ended
with Miriam speaking in a private conversation to Aaron about Moshe abstaining
from relations with Tzipporah. Miriam felt sorry for the status of Tzipporah
and not out of jealousy. Still she was punished for Lashon HaRa (the evil
tongue) even though it was true, private and not vicious. The question that
arises this week is “When will they ever learn?”.
Moshe spoke bad about
his ability to convince the people “They will not listen to me.” And he was
told to put his hand in his chest for temporary Leprosy and then return it so
that the would get the disease and miraculously be cured in front of the
people.
This week it is not
Lashon HaRa about Moshe but about the land of Eretz Yisrael.
“A land that eats its
inhabitants.” Rather they were busy with funerals of various giants that they
would not notice the 12 spies.
Unlike Moshe, who did
not want his job, or Miriam, who was concerned about her sister-in-law, the
spies were concerned about their jobs as leaders. In the wilderness of Sinai,
Yehoshua and Calev were leaders along with the other ten spies. Outside of
Bamidbar in Eretz Yisrael could they maintain their sway and position when
everyman had his parcel of land and was dispersed? There was no good side to
their talking or innocence. There was only the selfish quest for power or to
remain in power.
13:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Send thou men, that
they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel;
of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, everyone a prince among
them.' 3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according
to the commandment of the LORD; all of them men who were heads of the children
of Israel. 4 And these were their names: of the tribe of Reuben,
Shammua the son of Zaccur. 5 Of the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son
of Hori. 6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of
Jephunneh. 7 Of the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of
Joseph. 8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of
Nun. 9 Of the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of
Raphu. 10 Of the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of
Sodi. 11 Of the tribe of Joseph, namely, of the tribe of Manasseh,
Gaddi the son of Susi. 12 Of the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of
Gemalli. 13 Of the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael. 14 Of
the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi. 15 Of the tribe of
Gad, Geuel the son of Machi. 16 These are the names of the men that
Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua.
These were not the chief
prince of the tribe like Nahshon ben Aminadab but of a secondary level. If we
were to take the modern UK it would be instead of William the son of Charles,
it would be Harry the son of Charles or perhaps a son of William.
17 And
Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them: 'Get you up
here into the South, and go up into the mountains; 18 and see the
land, what it is; and the people that dwelleth therein, whether they are strong
or weak, whether they are few or many;
Simple military spying of
the strength of the enemy and their numbers.
19 and
what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities
they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;
Again only the physical
properties of their cities and if they were walled.
20 and
what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or
not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.'--Now the
time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.--
How is the land and the
produce. I had various grapes on my property. One produced in June another in
July and one in August. The Grapes of Chevron today can continue through
September and October. The cluster cut most likely was done in mid to late
August and was extremely large as shown in the standard pictures and that is
the tradition.
21 So
they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, at
the entrance to Hamath.
They spied close to the
Plishtim and the sea through Hamath in northern Syria.
22 And
they went up into the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and
Talmai, the children of Anak, were there.--Now Hebron was built seven years
before Zoan in Egypt.—
Chevron was built right
after the Tower of Bavel and Egypt was built later than that as the people
moved on from Bavel after the dispersion of languages.
23 And
they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one
cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a pole between two; they took also of
the pomegranates, and of the figs.--
The modern Eshcol is
close to Gaza but it could be the modern valley of Ayalon under Chevron.
24 That
place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the
children of Israel cut down from thence.--
Eshcol is Hebrew for
cluster and they had this very heavy cluster of grapes.
25 And
they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty
days. 26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all
the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to
Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and
showed them the fruit of the land.
Paran is north of the
Kadesh and in modern times has Nahal Zin there. Kadesh is basically the border
of Israel and Egypt today. It is a good grazing land and there is water
underground for wells. The modern Nitzana area on the map.
27 And
they told him, and said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sent us, and
surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.
If one is conspiring to
talk poorly of the land one cannot heap on in the beginning too much negativity
as one would not be believed rather they started with a positive note so that
the people were receptive and believed them.
28 Howbeit
the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and
very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.
Now comes the conspired
report of a fierce people, large in numbers and giants.
29 Amalek
dwells in the land of the South; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the
Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along
by the side of the Jordan.'
You had already defeated
Amalek once and also in Arad a second time. Why are you afraid?
30 And
Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: 'We should go up at once, and
possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.'
A Torah Nation with G-D
by their side, we can do just about everything.
31 But
the men that went up with him said: 'We are not able to go up against the
people; for they are stronger than we.'
Tell me. did you learn
about slaves fleeing 600 chariots of Pharaoh and HASHEM drowning them all or
you are clueless?
32 And
they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the
children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it
out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we
saw in it are men of great stature.
They viewed the funerals
of giants killed by HASHEM so that the spies would not be detected with all the
dignitaries coming the funerals. But instead of viewing the situation as a
miracle.
33 And
there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we
were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.'
How did they know this –
their projection of their fears. Just opposite Dovid a five foot two inch fellow
vs. a near nine foot tall Goliard.
14:1
And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept
that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses
and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we
had died in the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness!
This is the curse they
brought upon themselves. They would end up weeping this night for the first and second Mikdash. The
deportation of the Spanish Jews, out break of World War I than concluded with
Communism and the Holocaust.
3 And
wherefore doth the LORD bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our
wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return
into Egypt?'
Are you out of your
minds? G-D took you out of Mitzrayim, defeated their mechanized army aka Chariots
and you have zero faith!
4 And
they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into
Egypt.' 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the
assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. 6 And Joshua
the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, who were of them that spied out
the land, rent their clothes. 7 And they spoke unto all the
congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed
through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. 8 If the LORD
delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us--a
land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not against the
LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defense
is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.'
Only rebel not against
the L-RD! I wrote in Inyanay Diyoma Day 266 with two headlines day after day
regarding the Yeshiva Draft and payments or lack thereof.
10 But
all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD
appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.
They were about to lynch
Moshe, Aaron and perhaps Joshua and Calev. But when the glory of the L-RD
appeared suddenly the fear of the L-RD became greater than the panic of the enemy.
11 And
the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long
will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among
them?
Now you did it! You
managed to kindle the anger of the L-RD.
12 I
will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a
nation greater and mightier than they.'
That’s it I’ve had
enough with them. I will do to them what they feared the enemy might do but
immediately and worse.
13 And
Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the Egyptians shall hear--for Thou brought up
this people in Thy might from among them-- 14 they will say to the
inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou LORD art in the midst of
this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud stands
over them, and Thou goes before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a
pillar of fire by night;
How can you do this? It
is a big Chillul HASHEM.
15 now
if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard
the fame of Thee will speak, saying: 16 Because the LORD was not able
to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath
slain them in the wilderness. 17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power
of the LORD be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying: 18 The
LORD is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and
transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity
of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth
generation. 19 Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people
according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast
forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.'
This is what the nations
of the world shall feel and desecrate your HOLY NAME!
20 And
the LORD said: 'I have pardoned according to thy word.
This is what we say right
after Kol Nidre on Yom Kippur I have pardoned according to thy word.
21 But
in very deed, as I live--and all the earth shall be filled with the glory of
the LORD-- 22 surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My
signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof
these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice; 23 surely they
shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of
them that despised Me see it. 24 But My servant Caleb, because he had
another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the
land where into he went; and his seed shall possess it.
The ten spies who wanted
to keep their power in the wilderness basically turned into a pile of flesh and
bones while Calev and Yoshua lived long productive lives.
25 Now
the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get
you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.'
You are not to confront
these nations now as you will not enter the land.
26 And
the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 27 'How long shall
I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have
heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring
against Me. 28 Say unto them: As I live, saith the LORD, surely as ye
have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 your carcasses
shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to
your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured
against Me;
Your bones shall turn to
dust and sand in the wilderness.
30 surely
ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I
would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Jephunneh, and Joshua the
son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, that ye said would be a prey,
them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have
rejected. 32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this
wilderness.
This was the whole
generation and not just the ten spies.
33 And
your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear
your strayings, until your carcasses be consumed in the
wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which ye spied out the
land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities,
even forty years, and ye shall know My displeasure.
People would dig their
own graves every year on the 8th of Av. For
every day a year. And each year 15,000 would die on Tisha B’ Av and the rest
would awaken for another year. Until the last year. Thus some who were less
sinful and 59years old could live to 98-99 and those 20 at the time could live
to 59years of age.
35 I
the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation,
that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be
consumed, and there they shall die.' 36 And the men, whom Moses sent
to spy out the land, and who, when they returned, made all the congregation to
murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the
land, 37 even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land,
died by the plague before the LORD.
This is proof that the
Lashon HaRa caused a deadly plague and if had an affect both on the speaker of
and the listener to the Lashon HaRa died in the plague but others lived due to neutrality
or opposed to at the times.
38 But
Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those
men that went to spy out the land. 39 And Moses told these words unto
all the children of Israel; and the people mourned greatly.
The elders, women and
those under 20 watched the power and punishment of the L-RD.
40 And
they rose up early in the morning, and got them up to the top of the mountain,
saying: 'Lo, we are here, and will go up unto the place which the LORD hath
promised; for we have sinned.' 41 And Moses said: 'Wherefore now do
ye transgress the commandment of the LORD, seeing it shall not prosper? 42 Go
not up, for the LORD is not among you; that ye be not smitten down before your
enemies.
Some of the relatives
from Yoshua wanted to follow his advice that they could conquer. The land
physically. Except without the blessing and Hashgacha of HASHEM, nothing will
help and they will be smitten.
43 For
there the Amalekite and the Canaanite are before you, and ye shall fall by the
sword; forasmuch as ye are turned back from following the LORD, and the LORD
will not be with you.' 44 But they presumed to go up to the top of
the mountain; nevertheless the ark of the covenant of the LORD, and Moses,
departed not out of the camp. 45 Then the Amalekite and the
Canaanite, who dwelt in that hill-country, came down, and smote them and beat
them down, even unto Hormah.
You did not listen. You
forfeited your life by going against what HASHEM warned you.
15:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of
Israel, and say unto them: When ye are come into the land of your habitations,
which I give unto you, 3 and will make an offering by fire unto the
LORD, a burnt-offering, or a sacrifice, in fulfilment of a vow clearly uttered,
or as a freewill-offering, or in your appointed seasons, to make a sweet savor
unto the LORD, of the herd, or of the flock; 4 then shall he that
bringeth his offering present unto the LORD a meal-offering of a tenth part of
an ephah of fine flour mingled with the fourth part of a hin of oil; … 19 then
it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall set apart a
portion for a gift unto the LORD. 20 Of the first of your dough ye
shall set apart a cake for a gift; as that which is set apart of the
threshing-floor, so shall ye set it apart. 21 Of the first of your
dough ye shall give unto the LORD a portion for a gift throughout your
generations.
22 And
when ye shall err, and not observe all these commandments, which the LORD hath
spoken unto Moses, 23 even all that the LORD hath commanded you by
the hand of Moses, from the day that the LORD gave commandment, and onward
throughout your generations; 24 then it shall be, if it be done in
error by the congregation, it being hid from their eyes, that all the
congregation shall offer one young bullock for a burnt-offering, for a sweet savor
unto the LORD--with the meal-offering thereof, and the drink-offering thereof,
according to the ordinance--and one he-goat for a
sin-offering. 25 And the priest shall make atonement for all the
congregation of the children of Israel, and they shall be forgiven; for it was
an error, and they have brought their offering, an offering made by fire unto
the LORD, and their sin-offering before the LORD, for their error.
The atonement is for an
error whether of an individual or the congregation.
26 And
all the congregation of the children of Israel shall be forgiven, and the
stranger that sojourns among them; for in respect of all the people it was done
in error. 27 And if one person sin through error, then he shall offer
a she-goat of the first year for a sin-offering. 28 And the priest
shall make atonement for the soul that errs, when he sins through error, before
the LORD, to make atonement for him; and he shall be
forgiven, 29 both he that is home-born among the children of Israel,
and the stranger that sojourns among them: ye shall have one law for him that
does aught in error.
This applies to all
living in Eretz Yisrael such as a non-Jew who took upon himself the 7 Mitzvos
of Noach. This is the Ger Toshav or resident who recognizes G-D and that the
land belongs to the Bnei Yisrael.
31 Because
he hath despised the word of the LORD, and hath broken His commandment; that
soul shall utterly be cut off, his iniquity shall be upon him.
A willing violation (Mayzid)
will cause the soul to be cut off.
32 And
while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering
sticks upon the sabbath day.
Rabbi Akiva identifies him
as Zelophad who is described as “dying from his own sin”. Others say that
Zelophad was a Tzaddik who perhaps had the sin of not protesting the Lashon
HaRa of the spies.
33 And
they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto
all the congregation.
For trial before the Sanhedrin.
However, he could not be tried and killed on Shabbos.
34 And
they put him in ward, because it had not been declared what should be done to
him.
One who violates Shabbos
shall die it was written but they did this mean naturally like a disease or slipping
off a cliff or by trial.
35 And
the LORD said unto Moses: 'The man shall surely be put to death; all the
congregation shall stone him with stones without the camp.'
So two witnesses laid
their hands upon him and threw him down from the height of about two meters and
then the two lifted up a heavy stone and threw it down to his chest cavity so
that he should die. But if not, the nation shall pelt him with stones until his
soul leaves his body. That is his physical atonement.
36 And
all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones,
and he died, as the LORD commanded Moses.
It was customary to hang
the body on gallows before the people from the time of death and taken down and
buried before sunset. Meaning – warning folks if you violate the Shabbos in
public this is your end!
37 And
the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 38 'Speak unto the children of
Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generations fringes
in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each
corner a thread of blue.
The Tzitzis or fringed
garment is worn by Jews all over the world. The Karities do it like the ones
that have a thread of blue (Techeiles) but we are uncertain of the color today.
Since the main Torah Teachers remain uncertain if the Techeiles produced today
by scientists is the same as that of the Torah, they wear the standard Taleysm
with white strings and I do so too. Others of the younger generation and mine
too wear special blue.
39 And
it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all
the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your
own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray;
You shall see your
garment when you might sin (undressing with a woman of ill repute or other sin)
and cease and decease. DON’T!
40 that
ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God.
Like a string tied on
the finger of a child to remember that his father (in this case in heaven) is
watching over him.
41 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of
Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.'
Besides the promises to Avraham, Yitzchak and Yacov; I
took you out of Mitzrayim to be your G-D!
The four stories below are medical miracles of
recovering soldiers
All stories retold from Arutz (channel) 12 in English
by R. Pauli
When Yehuda
Ben Shabbat met Tamar then the miracle.
Tamar was driving home to the center of the country from
the Givati Base on the outskirts of Gaza. She was a 29year old reservist with a
boy friend but not serious. Yehuda, a former Charedi from Yerushalayim, left
the Charedi world to become a Givati Soldier. He also had a non-serious
relationship.
He was asking for a ride to Beer Sheva from the base. Tamar
passed him by but backed up to take him. She asked him where he really needed
to go? He answered that he lived in Givatayim. She said that was right near me.
Tamar is cute looking and Yehuda is tall dark and handsome. They exchanged
phone numbers if nothing more for the possibility of a ride north on his next
leave from Gaza.
The next leave did not come so quickly. Yehuda was on
patrol and an RPG exploded near him filling his body with shrapnel. When he
appeared on TV, his left shoulder and upper arm had some medical cover on it.
When Yehuda awoke in the hospital, the first thing he did
was contact Tamar. She came as soon as possible and stayed with him almost
daily. He also had started a business and bought her some 14 carat gold
bracelet and necklace from the profits. From their appearance on TV she was
sort of smothering him with care and arm in arm. It looks like they are in a
serious relationship.
He still has a way to go towards recovery and by this time,
Tamar must be out of the reserves but appears to be regular with Yehuda.
Rafael Diskin can run again
Rafael was a bulldozer
driver for the engineering division. The film from the helmet of a terrorist
shows him clearing a path in either northern or central Gaza for tanks. The
terrorist runs into one of the empty buildings with an RPG on the end of his
rifle. He aims for a weak spot by the door and shoots.
The battalion head comes
and pulls him out with another soldier and to safety while others search for
the terrorist. Rafael remembers who rescued him from the bulldozer but soon
loses consciousness. The injuries are so serious that the evacuation to safety
and the helicopter takes 40 minutes with a small operation on the spot to save
his life.
Rafael wakes up three
weeks later in the hospital having undergone a number of operations which will
end up 14 in total.
Rafael is working out in
Beit Leavenstein and has started the first steps of walking and on the
treadmill running again. He has to relearn his physical functions but mentally
is OK.
Wounded in Gaza so badly his own staff at hospital
did not recognize him.
Rachamim Pauli and
When the ICU team at
Soroka Hospital admitted a reservist seriously wounded and unconscious they
took his finger print for ID. Shot with shrapnel with a life threatening head
injury, the 46year old doctor with a sense of humor was unrecognizable. Instead
of rescuing others in Khan Younis it was he who was rescue. The anesthetists
who worked daily with Dr. Yoav Birchovsky administered the dosage to Ploni. It
was his best friend that came from the other side, Dr. Adam who recognized him
while aiding in the anesthesia that recognized Yoav. The female Dr. could not
believe Dr. Adam but as she lifted his eyelids, she saw his special green
colored eyes. Along with Dr. Yoav, another doctor from Soroka sustained
relatively minor injuries.
Dr. Yoav was
interviewed twice and has a damaged trachea. He speaks very softly.
The first interview
was Motzei Shabbos and the second on Tuesday June 25th.
Yoav Bichovsky, a senior doctor at the intensive care unit at
Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, wasn’t recognizable to his own colleagues
when he returned to the hospital from reserve duty as a combat medic — this
time, as a patient, unconscious and seriously wounded.
Bichovsky, 47, volunteered on October 7, after the Hamas terror
group’s deadly attack on southern Israel, when thousands of terrorists invaded
the country from Gaza, killing 1,200 people, taking 251 hostages, and sparking
the ongoing war in the Strip.
Bichovsky was sent to Gaza intermittently, returning to his work
at the hospital in between. But on March 31, after he had been serving for
three days in southern Gaza’s Khan Younis, an RPG struck his vehicle, seriously
wounding him and two other soldiers.
When Bichovsky, along with the other two injured soldiers,
arrived at the hospital, he was unconscious and suffering from a head injury.
Staff took his fingerprints and entered them into the military identification
database, but he wasn’t identified.
Strikingly, none of those treating Bichovsky, many of whom knew
him well, recognized him either at first, until Adam Saparov, an intensive care
doctor and close friend of Bichovsky, realized the patient’s identity. “From
the outside it sounds very strange, but you must understand, when a wounded
person arrives, in the first few minutes or even the first few hours, sometimes
it’s very hard to identify him. I won’t get into the graphic details, but it’s
hard sometimes,” Amit Frenkel, one of Bichovsky’s colleagues, told Channel 12 news
in a report broadcast on Saturday night.
Professor Alexander Zlotnik, of the anesthesiology division at
Soroka, attributed his own failure to recognize Bichovsky not to his
colleague’s physical state, but to an inner psychological block: “It was some
kind of blackout in my brain— I wasn’t ready to accept it,” he told Channel 12.
“[Dr. Saparov] told me,
‘Shachar, it’s Bichovsky, look at his fingers, his jaw, his nose,'” recounted
anesthesiologist Shachar Negev. “I told him: It’s not him. I just don’t see
it.”
Then Negev opened the patient’s eyes. “Yoel has a very special
color to his eyes, a green that not a lot of people have, and they were that
same green,” she recounted. “Little by little, the understanding seeped in.”
The Soroka team then decided to inform Bichovsky’s wife, Esther,
that he had been admitted, rather than wait for the military to tell her what
had happened.
“We really hesitated
about whether to do that,” Frenkel said. “The Israeli expression, ‘A knock on
the door’ [from the IDF with bad news] — that’s become an awful, chilling
expression… It was clear to us that we had to [inform the family, rather than
have them hear from the army].”
Frenkel and a few other colleagues of Bichovsky went to his
home, first calling his wife Esther from outside, and told her of the
situation, emphasizing that they didn’t consider Bichovsky’s condition
life-threatening.
There was also some deliberation about whether the Soroka team
should provide ongoing treatment or transfer Bichovsky elsewhere, to a team
that did not have a personal connection to the patient.
“That night, there was a
question about whether we should treat him ourselves,” Professor Moti Klein, of
Bichovsky’s unit, told Channel 12. But “the thought that he would be treated somewhere
else was harder to stomach than that we would treat him.”
Yoav Bichovsky, a senior doctor at the
intensive care unit at Soroka Medical Center in Beersheba, wasn’t recognizable
to his own colleagues when he returned to the hospital from reserve duty as a
combat medic — this time, as a patient, unconscious and seriously wounded.
Bichovsky is now in an intensive six-month process of
rehabilitation at the Loewenstein Hospital Rehabilitation Center in Raanana,
working on speech, motor skills, and other basic functions, and has been making
rapid progress.
He speaks in something of a whisper now — one of his vocal cords
was half-paralyzed by the RPG attack. But he spoke of hope for the future,
saying he expects “to return home, to eat like a human being, regular things.
To be a dad.”
Asked whether he intends to return to the intensive care unit —
as a doctor again this time — Bichovsky was unequivocal: “Yes,” he said. “It’s
amazing work. It’s an amazing life.”
“Everything that’s
happened since the 7th [of October], it comes home to us. And here, it came
home to us, to our family,” said Alex Fichman, another of Bichovsky’s
colleagues at Soroka. “Our problem was, we know too much.”
“We know how severe a
head injury is, how serious the consequences can be afterward,” elaborated
Michal Zada, a nurse in the ward. “And Yoav is someone that you can’t imagine
[as a patient] in the unit; you can’t imagine him lying in a bed,” Zada said.
“I asked who would be
able — mentally — to treat him, without breaking down. There were nurses who
said it was too hard, that they were afraid they wouldn’t stop crying,” she
told Channel 12.
Over the weeks after he was admitted and placed on life-support,
Bichovsky gradually responded to treatment.
On May 5, he responded to a WhatsApp message from Saparov, a
landmark moment. At that point, said Saparov, “I understood that he was himself
again, 35 days after he was helicoptered in” from Gaza.
His colleagues had worried whether Bichovsky would be the same
man they knew before, but joked among themselves that “Yoav, as someone
super-intelligent, has a lot to spare, so it’s okay if he goes down a few
levels,” Frenkel said.
“It was very strange at
first,” Bichovsky told Channel 12, reflecting on his return to consciousness
and subsequent progress. “You’re a little like a doll,” he said, being handled
by others with little input of your own.
“It’s really a great
team,” he said of his colleagues. “They were always saying, ‘Don’t forget, I’m
the nurse, I’m the doctor, I’m the therapist, it’ll be fine.’”
The article did not tell how Dr. Yoav asked to look at the MRI
of his brain injury. He will have a fluid drain tube from his brain going into
his stomach for the rest of his life.
Oz (pronounced oh-z) Ackerman has brain damage
Oz was hit so badly all
over the body and in his head that he was in the most critical condition with
not much hope of survival. He was unconscious for weeks hovering between life
and death.
In fact Oz and his fellow
soldiers were being trained to be sergeants. They were supposed to learn basic
command and some more war skills prior to entrance into Gaza. Instead they
entered a building to take cover from all sorts of RPG’s and bullets around
them.
Unfortunately, the
building was wired with explosives. Three soldiers died outright on the spot.
Oz was teetering between life and death. He had shrapnel all over but he had a
terrible head wound.
A few months later, his
unit received their three stripes. Oz is now able to walk and even run but he
speaks slowly with his brain damage. He is more alert than a certain
politically leader and very aware but can only reply to questions slowly. In a
ceremony with the head of the brigade and battalion, Oz got his deserved
stripes. He has a long way to recovery to function properly and most likely
will speak slowly for the rest of his life.

Do you think it is wrong that the Charedi to be draft
? It is war and Israel need all the man power that they can get ?
I have three answers regarding
this. First of all, my son and I served on the front lines sometimes both of us
on two fronts at once. Our belief is that if one is not learning, he should be
helping in the army. There are too many false Charedim and too many working
under the table instead of serving in the army.
My son was in a Hesder Yeshiva Unit
and always with religious people. I cannot say the same for myself. The Kashrus
in the army was a constant battle. Sometimes I had to destroy plates and
routinely kosher metal utensils. Other times since in the field the soldiers
cooked their coffee or chocolate with milk. I could not use tea or coffee if I
wanted after a meat meal. The last thing you want to do if each one’s life
depends on the other is to be a snitch (not to mention Lashon HaRa of this
week’s Parsha).
The army has no accommodations for
prayers, often an Eruv and other items. The religious especially Charedim are
an added burden upon the army.
Last, but not least, is
the protection of the soldiers due to prayers and Torah Learning. This is the
real protection of the army. It is these prayers and angels built by Torah
learning that save lives and protects others from injury.
Ganz: “We can put Lebanon completely into the dark, and take apart
Hezbollah’s power in days,” he said, adding that the price to Israel “will be

cannot be deterred from it.”
