When you reach a certain age, the doctors look for ways not to give you a Kidney Transplant. It took five or more years for Daniel ben Rivka to get one. Now prayers are needed for Chaim ben Miriam and he may or may not get a Kidney. It depends if the contacts the Jewish Kidney Donor lists or not.

Parsha Bechalosecha
We have just finished
the census and dedication of the Mishkan. We are time wise the 13th
of Nisan 2449. The ceremony of lighting the Menorah may have been mentioned to
Aaron beforehand as the lighting started on the first of Nisan. There is never
an early or a late in the Torah and the narrative now moves to the ceremony of
lighting the Menorah. We return also to what we started in Bamidbar and Naso
with the separation of the Leviim starting with 8:6 that should have occurred
no later than the first of Nisan 2449.
This week, we have 5 Mitzvos given 3 negative and 2
positive. One of them is the Mitzvah of Pessach Sheni discussed in this week’s
Parsha. The Parsha somehow begins by hinting about Hanukah a spiritually
freedom celebration and goes on to talk about Pesach a physical as well as
spiritual freedom celebration. The following I took from last year’s OU.org
Torah Tidbits: RAMBAM says (seems to
say) that a boy or girl who reaches the age of Mitzvos after Pesach but before
Pesach Sheni, should preferably not participate in the first Pesach (as a
child) but rather should bring Pesach Sheni (as a halachic adult). If, however,
they were included in (and did eat) Pesach Rishon, then they do not bring. A non-Jew who converts between the Pesachim,
would not have been part of the first Pesach. He must bring Pesach Sheni as a
(new) Jew. This is surprising considering that the later was a Jew on
Pesach Rishon and the second one had to link whatsoever to Judaism!
From the day that the Mishkan was erected, it was covered by a heavenly
Cloud during the day and a fiery cloud at night. Only when the cloud would lift
would the People travel. And when the cloud rested, the People would camp. It
happened that sometimes the People traveled a few hours after they had camped;
sometimes they stayed in one place for a period of days or months or years. By
G-d's command the People camped and by G-d's command the People would travel. This is a good reason for obeying the commandments and yet
time and time the people sinned. On the other hand with all the miracles today I
can’t understand, no I can’t understand why life goes on the way it was,
without thinking about HASHEM Yisborach.
8:1 And the LORD
spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Speak unto Aaron, and say unto him: When
thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the
candlestick.'
This had to have been on or before the first of Nisan 2449 as the
lamp had to be relit daily. The Midrash asks does G-D need man to light a light
for seeing? It can be compared to a blind man who was guided by a care taker
who wished to return something to his care taker by lighting for him a candle
at night. After all going back to the Big Bang and “Let there be light” a simple
gold menorah with pure olive oil is a very primitive light against the primeval
light.
It is our HaKaras HaTov Le HASHEM
(recognizing the good from HASHEM).
When
you light: Why is the portion dealing with the menorah juxtaposed to the
portion dealing with the chieftains? For when Aaron saw the dedication
[offerings] of the chieftains, he felt distressed over not joining them in this
dedication-neither he nor his tribe. So God said to him, “By your life, yours
is greater than theirs, for you will light and prepare the lamps.” - [Tanchuma Bechalosecha
3] When you light: Heb. בְּהַעֲלֹתְךָ,
lit., when you cause to ascend. Since the flame rises, Scripture describes
kindling in terms of ascending. He is required to kindle the lamp until the
flame rises by itself (Shab. 21a). Our Sages further expounded from here that
there was a step in front of the menorah, on which the kohen stood to prepare
[the lamps]. — [Sifrei Beha’alothecha 3] Toward the face of the menorah: Toward
the middle lamp, which is not on [one of] the branches, but on the menorah
itself. — [Men. 98b] Shall cast their light: The six on the six branches; the
three eastern ones-that is their wicks-facing towards the center one, and
likewise, the three western ones, the tops of their wicks facing toward the
center one. Why [were the wicks facing inwards, thus giving off so little
light]? So that [people] should not say that He [God] needs the light. — [Tanchuma
Bechalosecha 5]
Bamidbar
8:2 “When you light” – we find in many places that the Holy One Blessed be HE
commanded things concerning lamps. Shemos 27:20 and Vayikra 24:4 so here it the
lamp must be lit with pure olive oil even though the written Torah does not
specifically say so. Does HASHEM need the light from Temple? Of course not, it
is HIS tree of life that extends from the north to the south. With the sun
rising on the right side then at noon illuminating the trunk before going to
the left side of the tree. So the 7 lights from the Menorah in the Temple
physically will never illuminate like the sun or spiritually illuminate like
the tree of life. Yet being created in the image of G-D, we were given the
power to imitate HASHEM and his tree of life and the sun through the Incense
and Menorah. A mini-smell and light show of Gan Eden.
The
following is one of the warnings of modesty from the Zohar. “The following is
found in the book of Melech Shlomo (King Solomon). The incense has the virtue
of diffusing joy and putting away death. For whereas Judgement prevails on the
exterior, joy and illumination, on the other hand, proceed from the Interior,
the seat of all happiness. The incense thus has the virtue of annulling
death and binds all together and was therefore offered on the interior altar. “Take
the Leviim” (8:6) this means that it was needful to cleanse them and draw
them on that they might be linked to their own proper place. For they symbolize
the Left Arm, identical with the side of Judgement and whoever proceeds from
the side of Judgement ought not to let his hair grow, as he thereby strengthens
Judgement in the world. FOR THE SAME REASON A WOMAN MAN TO HAVER HER HAIR
EXPOSED TO VIEW, BUT IT BEHOVES HER TO COVERHERHEAD AND KEEP HER HAIR CONSEALED.
When this is done, all those who proceed from the side of Judgement are
blessed; and thus explained the command about taking the Leviim and cleansing
them.
3 And
Aaron did so: he lighted the lamps thereof so as to give light in front of the
candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses. 4 And this was the work of
the candlestick, beaten work of gold; unto the base thereof, and unto the
flowers thereof, it was beaten work; according unto the pattern which the LORD
had shown Moses, so he made the candlestick.
Moshe did not make the Candelabra
but Betzalel did. It is credited to him as he commanded it to be executed.
Shall cast their light: The six on the six

toward the center one. Why [were the wicks facing inwards, thus giving off so
little light]? So that [people] should not say that He [God] needs the light. —

Said Rebbe Yitzchak: One who wants to become
wise should turn to the south [when praying], and one who wishes to become rich
should turn to the north. Your sign for this is the Table was to the north, and
the Menorah to the south. Said Rebbe Yehoshua ben Levi: One should always turn
to the south, because through obtaining wisdom, he will obtain wealth. (Baba Basra
25b)
This means if we are facing east, the left side
of the Aron HaKodesh is for wealth and the right side is for wisdom. When I was
young, I used to pray mainly on the right side but in FL I pray on the left
side for leaving something for my grandchildren and my Kollel to continue the
Torah as is written “No flour no Torah, and without Torah there will be no
flour.” Our Sages say, “Give Ma’aseh and you will become rich”.
Shemen Zayis (olive oil) is a symbol of wisdom
and the extra-virgin olive oil used in the Temple for lighting is light for all
mankind to the world for Torah. Thus the Menorah in the Temple represented
wisdom for each day of the week generated 24/7 from the Beis HaMikdash.
5 And
the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 6 'Take the Levites from among the
children of Israel, and cleanse them.
In the same vein that the Mishkan and Cohanim
had to be made ready and purified for the service of the L-RD so too the
Leviim.
7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse
them: sprinkle the water of purification upon them, and let them cause a razor
to pass over all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and cleanse
themselves.
Sprinkle them with cleansing water: from the ashes of the red
cow, so as to cleanse them from contamination by those who were in contact with
the dead. and pass a razor over all their flesh: I found in the writings of R.
Moses Hadarshan (the preacher): Since they [the Levites] were submitted in
atonement for the firstborn who had practiced idolatry [when they worshipped
the golden calf], which is called sacrifices to the dead-and one afflicted with
Tzoras is considered dead-they required shaving like those afflicted with Tzoras.
The whole process made sure that the Leviim were
separated from the Bnei Yisrael in holiness.
8 Then let them take a young bullock, and its
meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt
thou take for a sin-offering.
Being sinless after the offering was the
culmination of the purification process which started with the mikvah, shaving
and sacrifice.
9 And
thou shalt present the Levites before the tent of meeting; and thou shalt
assemble the whole congregation of the children of Israel. 10 And
thou shalt present the Levites before the LORD; and the children of Israel
shall lay their hands upon the Levites. 11 And Aaron shall offer the
Levites before the LORD for a wave-offering from the children of Israel, that
they may be to do the service of the LORD. 12 And the Levites shall
lay their hands upon the heads of the bullocks; and offer thou the one for a
sin-offering, and the other for a burnt-offering, unto the LORD, to make
atonement for the Levites. … 9:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of
the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt,
saying: 2 'Let the children of Israel keep the Passover in its
appointed season. 3 In the fourteenth day of this month, at dusk, ye
shall keep it in its appointed season; according to all the statutes of it, and
according to all the ordinances thereof, shall ye keep it.' 4 And
Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, that they should keep the
Passover. 5 And they kept the Passover in the first month, on the
fourteenth day of the month, at dusk, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to
all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did the children of
Israel. 6 But there were certain men, who were unclean by the dead
body of a man, so that they could not keep the Passover on that day; and they
came before Moses and before Aaron on that day. 7 And those men said
unto him: 'We are unclean by the dead body of a man; wherefore are we to be
kept back, so as not to bring the offering of the LORD in its appointed season
among the children of Israel?' 8 And Moses said unto them: 'Stay ye,
that I may hear what the LORD will command concerning you.'
These were the first cousins of Moshe and Aaron who had just
buried Aaron’s sons on the 8th day and could not purify themselves
for Pesach.
9 And
the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 10 'Speak unto the children of
Israel, saying: If any man of you or of your generations shall be unclean by
reason of a dead body, or be in a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the
Passover unto the LORD; 11 in the second month on the fourteenth day
at dusk they shall keep it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter
herbs; 12 they shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break a
bone thereof; according to all the statute of the Passover they shall keep
it. 13 But the man that is clean, and is not on a journey, and
forbears to keep the Passover, that soul shall be cut off from his people;
because he brought not the offering of the LORD in its appointed season, that
man shall bear his sin. 14 And if a stranger shall sojourn among you,
and will keep the Passover unto the LORD: according to the statute of the
Passover, and according to the ordinance thereof, so shall he do; ye shall have
one statute, both for the stranger, and for him that is born in the
land.'
So the law of Pesach Sheni was established.
15 And
on the day that the tabernacle was reared up the cloud covered the tabernacle,
even the tent of the testimony; and at even there was upon the tabernacle as it
were the appearance of fire, until morning. 16 So it was always: the
cloud covered it, and the appearance of fire by night. 17 And
whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the
children of Israel journeyed; and in the place where the cloud abode, there the
children of Israel encamped. 18 At the commandment of the LORD the
children of Israel journeyed, and at the commandment of the LORD they encamped:
as long as the cloud abode upon the tabernacle they remained encamped.
I will cover this section a little
later at the end of chapter 10. The section here is important for there were
less than 40 stops in the Midbar. We have here a clear explanation of the
resting that was done and the taking up of the encampment.

And when the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle many days, then the children of
Israel kept the charge of the LORD, and journeyed not. 20 And sometimes the
cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle; according to the commandment of the
LORD they remained encamped, and according to the commandment of the LORD they
journeyed. 21 And sometimes the
cloud was from evening until morning; and when the cloud was taken up in the
morning, they journeyed; or if it continued by day and by night, when the cloud
was taken up, they journeyed. 22 Whether it were two days, or a
month, or a year, that the cloud tarried upon the tabernacle, abiding thereon,
the children of Israel remained encamped, and journeyed not; but when it was
taken up, they journeyed.
They did not do anything without the approval of HASHEM.
23 At
the commandment of the LORD they encamped, and at the commandment of the LORD
they journeyed; they kept the charge of the LORD, at the commandment of the
LORD by the hand of Moses.
We see here that the whole nation – men, woman and children
marched in the army of HASHEM when the command was given.
10:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Make thee two trumpets of
silver; of beaten work shalt thou make them; and they shall be unto thee for
the calling of the congregation, and for causing the camps to set
forward. 3 And when they shall blow with them, all the congregation
shall gather themselves unto thee at the door of the tent of
meeting. 4 And if they blow but with one, then the princes, the heads
of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee. 5 And
when ye blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall take their
journey.
There is nothing new under the sun.
The Trumpet has been around for war signals for thousands of years. We have
sirens today that set the alarm or loud speakers but the trumpet or bugle was
the main commander. Anybody who saw an old Rin-Tin-Tin Show or movie with the
US troops of yesteryear, will note that the bugle gives wake-up, assembly or
roll call, battle, and taps for the lowering of the flag or a funeral when day
is done and gone the sun.
6 And
when ye blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side
shall set forward; they shall blow an alarm for their journeys.
One movement from Yehuda in the east then Reuven in the south.
7 But
when the assembly is to be gathered together, ye shall blow, but ye shall not
sound an alarm. 8 And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow with
the trumpets; and they shall be to you for a statute forever throughout your
generations. 9 And when ye go to war in your land against the
adversary that oppresses you, then ye shall sound an alarm with the trumpets;
and ye shall be remembered before the LORD your God, and ye shall be saved from
your enemies.
There were no radio commands but the trumpets blowing “move
forward”. Today the alarm sirens are for civilians and soldiers exposed in the
areas of incoming enemy projectiles.
10 Also
in the day of your gladness, and in your appointed seasons, and in your new
moons, ye shall blow with the trumpets over your burnt-offerings, and over the
sacrifices of your peace-offerings; and they shall be to you for a memorial
before your God: I am the LORD your God.'
The Trumpets must have blown a differ tune for war and a different
rhythm for a Korban.
11 And
it came to pass in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth day
of the month, that the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle of the
testimony. 12 And the children of Israel set forward by their stages
out of the wilderness of Sinai; and the cloud abode in the wilderness of
Paran.-- 13 And they took their first journey, according to the
commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 14 And in the first
place the standard of the camp of the children of Judah set forward according
to their hosts; and over his host was Nahshon the son of Aminadab. 15 And
over the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel the son of
Zuar. 16 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun
was Eliab the son of Helon. 17 And the tabernacle was taken down; and
the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who bore the tabernacle, set
forward. 18 And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward
according to their hosts; and over his host was Elizur the son of
Shedeur. 19 And over the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon
was Shelumiel the son of Zurishaddai. 20 And over the host of the
tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph the son of Deuel. 21 And
the Kohathites the bearers of the sanctuary set forward, that the tabernacle
might be set up against their coming. 22 And the standard of the camp
of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their hosts; and over his
host was Elishama the son of Ammihud. 23 And over the host of the
tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel the son of
Pedahzur. 24 And over the host of the tribe of the children of
Benjamin was Abidan the son of Gideoni. 25 And the standard of the
camp of the children of Dan, which was the rearward of all the camps, set
forward according to their hosts; and over his host was Ahiezer the son of
Ammishaddai. 26 And over the host of the tribe of the children of
Asher was Pagiel the son of Ochran. 27 And over the host of the tribe
of the children of Naphtali was Ahira the son of Enan. 28 Thus were
the journeyings of the children of Israel according to their hosts.--And they
set forward.
This is how the tribes moved in the desert and the leaders of the
army going forward.
29 And
Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law:
'We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said: I will give it you;
come thou with us, and we will do thee good; for the LORD hath spoken good
concerning Israel.' 30 And he said unto him: 'I will not go; but I will
depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.' 31 And he said: 'Leave
us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou know how we are to encamp in the
wilderness, and thou shalt be to us instead of eyes. 32 And it shall
be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what good soever the LORD shall
do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.' 33 And they set forward
from the mount of the LORD three days' journey; and the ark of the covenant of
the LORD went before them three days' journey, to seek out a resting-place for
them. 34 And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they
set forward from the camp. 35 And it came to pass, when the ark set
forward, that Moses said: 'Rise up, O LORD, and let Thine enemies be scattered;
and let them that hate Thee flee before Thee.' 36 And when it rested,
he said: 'Return, O LORD, unto the ten thousands of the families of
Israel.'
The Section regarding the movement of the
Shivaism (tribes) ends with this blessing which we use every time we open the
Aron in the Synagogue. Because this last section is surrounded by Nuns some say
that it was written out of this place and brought here and others treat this as
if it were a book from the Torah making Vayikra into three Seferim. I might not
know the reason for the two Nuns but it definitely appears in the right place
logically. The particular blessing of the movement of the Teva was so rare
(less than 40 travels in the desert and a few here and there in Eretz Yisrael
that this blessing becomes outstanding as a Pidyon Chamor (redemption of the first-born
donkey) is today.
11:
1 And the people were as murmurers, speaking evil in the ears of the LORD;
and when the LORD heard it, His anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD
burnt among them, and devoured in the uttermost part of the
camp. 2 And the people cried unto Moses; and Moses prayed unto the
LORD, and the fire abated. 3 And the name of that place was called
Taberah, because the fire of the LORD burnt among them. 4 And the
mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting; and the children of Israel
also wept on their part, and said: 'Would that we were given flesh to
eat! 5 We remember the fish, which we were wont to eat in Egypt for
nought; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the
garlic; 6 but now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all; we
have nought save this manna to look to.'-- 7 Now the manna was like
coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of
bdellium. 8 The people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in
mills, or beat it in mortars, and seethed it in pots, and made cakes of it; and
the taste of it was as the taste of a cake baked with oil. 9 And when
the dew fell upon the camp in the night, the manna fell upon
it.-- 10 And Moses heard the people weeping, family by family, every
man at the door of his tent; and the anger of the LORD was kindled greatly; and
Moses was displeased. 11 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'Wherefore
hast Thou dealt ill with Thy servant? and wherefore have I not found favor in
Thy sight, that Thou lay the burden of all this people upon
me? 12 Have I conceived all this people? have I brought them forth,
that Thou shouldest say unto me: Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing-father
carries the sucking child, unto the land which Thou didst swear unto their
fathers? 13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people?
for they trouble me with their weeping, saying: Give us flesh, that we may
eat. 14 I am not able to bear all this people myself alone, because
it is too heavy for me. 15 And if Thou deal thus with me, kill me, I
pray Thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in Thy sight; and let me not look
upon my wretchedness.' 16 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Gather unto
Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou know to be the elders of the
people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tent of meeting, that
they may stand there with thee. 17 And I will come down and speak
with thee there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put
it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou
bear it not thyself alone. 18 And say thou unto the people: Sanctify
yourselves against to-morrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye have wept in the
ears of the LORD, saying: Would that we were given flesh to eat! for it was
well with us in Egypt; therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall
eat. 19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days,
neither ten days, nor twenty days; 20 but a whole month, until it come out
at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you; because that ye have rejected the
LORD who is among you, and have troubled Him with weeping, saying: Why, now,
came we forth out of Egypt?'
The people complain about the miracle Mann from
heaven. Moshe doesn’t understand if there will be enough flocks and herds to
feed them. At first it sounds incredulous for not believing in the power of the
creator. When I asked a Rav or a friend years ago (forgot whom), he told me –
not physical food for their Yetzer Hara was so big that Moshe did not believe
that they would ever be satisfied. HASHEM then sends in the quail not for a
night but 30 days. The gluttons died instantly upon eating almost raw the
birds. The others cooked them, blessed HASHEM for the miracles and survived.
… 24 And Moses went out, and told the people
the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people,
and set them round about the Tent. 25 And the LORD came down in the cloud, and
spoke unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the
seventy elders; and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them,
they prophesied, but they did so no more. 26 But there remained two men in the
camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad; and the
spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were recorded, but had not
gone out unto the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp. 27 And there ran a
young man, and told Moses, and said: 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the
camp.' 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses from his youth up,
answered and said: 'My lord Moses, shut them in.' 29 And Moses said unto him:
'Art thou jealous for my sake? would that all the LORD'S people were prophets,
that the LORD would put His spirit upon them!'
Because the two men claimed that
they had not gotten the elder written down in the drawing, they got prophecy
and their names written in the eternal Torah as they were humble and modest for
the honor of others.
… 32 And the people rose up all that day,
and all the night, and all the next day, and gathered the quails; he that
gathered least gathered ten heaps; and they spread them all abroad for
themselves round about the camp. 33 While the flesh was yet between their
teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people,
and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.
It was explained to me that the
quail produce in their muscles certain chemicals when they fly and these
gluttons ate the birds raw and did not wait. Those who koshered and cooked
their meals properly, in due time allowed the chemicals to leave.
34 And the name of that place was called
Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people that lusted.
Literally the graves of the
gluttonous of the people.
35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed
unto Hazeroth; and they abode at Hazeroth.
The people were posed at this point
to enter Eretz Yisrael so if they behaved they would but if not they would
return to the desert wilderness.
12:1 And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses
because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite
woman.
Miriam was interested in the nuptial rights of
Tzipporah. I don’t want to open up all the laws of the Ketuvah here but to tell
you that Miriam was halachically correct about Nuptial rights of a woman. Her
sin was talking behind Moshe’s back to Aaron. Had she asked Aaron a Psak on how
to approach a husband denying his wife congenial rights, without mentioning
Moshe’s name; she would not have sinned! It was done out of love for her
sister-in-law and not hatred for baby brother Moshe that her punishment in this
world was relatively light.
… 9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled
against them; and He departed. 10 And when the cloud was removed from over the
Tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow; and Aaron looked upon
Miriam; and, behold, she was leprous. 11 And Aaron said unto Moses: 'Oh my
lord, lay not, I pray thee, sin upon us, for that we have done foolishly, and

Because Miriam waited to find out
what happens to Moshe, she was rewarded in that the whole camp waited for her.
The Ambulance or Ambulances of Sderot on Oct. 7th
On Wednesday evening
there was a story on Channel 14 of Avi or Meir Palko who was a Yeshiva Boy that
volunteered or works with the special ICU ambulance. He told his story. “I
heard the sirens and the extra-large number of rockets. My instinct at 6:29 AM
was to get to the ambulance but shrapnel fell near by and it took me 20 minutes
to get across the Yeshiva Courtyard.
By 7:06 I was on the
ICU Ambulance. I could see the police station under seize and terrorists
elsewhere. One took a shot at us and we quickly turned back with one paramedic
shooting and maybe killing a terrorist.
This may or may not be
the same story or a different ambulance as the one with the Paramedic is a
regular ambulance and not ICU.

MDA Station Sderot story by Elor Tawil

Sderot MDA station, is a
father of five – the youngest of whom was only two weeks old at the time. That
morning in the safe room, he kissed his wife and children goodbye, and made his
way to the MDA station, as he
had done many times in the past in Sderot, a city that has been in the line of
fire for years. Elor expected to help his colleagues treat those injured by
falling missiles; no one yet knew that this situation would be entirely
different. When Elor arrived at the station, despite being an observant Jew who
refrains from using his phone on the Sabbath, he called his wife and told her:
“There are terrorists inside the city. Stay inside the safe room. Spread the
word as widely as you can.” Elor then decided to take the initiative by
starting up the bullet-proof ambulance and preparing it for evacuating the
wounded. It was then that paramedics Netanel Dahbash and Amit Hananya
transferred the gunshot victim they had been treating to the ambulance and
evacuated him to the hospital, despite the presence of terrorists inside the
city.
The team operating the armored intensive care ambulance began
evacuating the wounded, a mission that would last until the early hours of the
following morning. At a certain point, Amit Hananya moved to a separate
ambulance, and Hadar Koltaker, another paramedic, took his place. At first,
they evacuated those who were being treated at the MDA station, and then they
moved on to everyone else in need of urgent treatment in Sderot, which had

The concept of being a shaliach
(emissary) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe intrigued me, particularly campus shalichus,
which I (Rabbi Dov Wagner) imagined to be focused more on learning with students
and less on organizing and logistics. In 2000, my wife Runya and I
were hired by Chabad of California to move to LA and work on the "Kehos
Chumash." At our request, at the same time we were also appointed as
University of Southern California's first shaluchim (Chabad emissaries).
Word on the street at the
time was that as a public college, UCLA was the school with the Jews, while the
very upper crust and private USC was the school without any members of the
tribe. Runya and I at first lived in Pico-Robertson, and we went to USC for
Shabbos and to teach "lunch and learn" whenever we could. At that
time, if we got three or four kids for a Shabbos meal that was a real
accomplishment.
After a couple of years, we
moved out to campus full-time. Nothing came easy -- money was so tight that I
went without medical insurance for several years -- but step by step, things
moved in a positive direction. We went from having 30 people at our 2001 Purim
party to close to 1,000 in 2006, while attendance at our campus menorah
lighting swelled from 50 in 2007 to over 300 in 2021.

Steve [1] reached out to me after joining us for the first Shabbos
of the fall semester to let me know he wanted a mezuzah, something we offer,
and I went by his place to hang one up and to put tefillin on him. We got to
talking, and Steve told me that his family was so disconnected from their
Jewish roots that they sent him to Catholic school and took him to tour Italy's
cathedrals and museums for his bar mitzvah.
As Steve got older he got
into Catholic art and music. Suddenly, he realized he was heading in the wrong
direction. He recalled a picture of his grandmother lighting Shabbos candles,
something that was clearly very meaningful to her, which prompted him to start
looking into Judaism. That Shabbos he came to us at USC was the first time
Steve ever met an Orthodox rabbi in person. He became a regular at our Chabad
House and even purchased his own tefillin. Steve's favorite Shabbosos at the
Chabad House are the ones when we were not able to assemble a minyan, because
that gives us an extra two or three hours to learn Torah together in the
mornings.

Chanukah 2021: 37 different campus events, 110 dozen donuts and
2,500 Trader Joe's potato latkes. It was definitely one for the books,
especially our menorah lighting at the Sigma Chi fraternity house, probably the
most goyishe house on the row. Still, even Sigma Chi has a few Jews, so we went
and did what we do - and that should have been the end of it.
But it wasn't.
Two days later, a few
students stopped to help my wife bring 32 dozen donuts in from the car. Simon
was one of them and he recognized my wife from Sigma Chi, telling her he had
been in the next room on the phone with his mother during the menorah lighting.
In the course of that conversation, Simon's mother shared for the first time
ever that she was Jewish. Of course, Runya told Simon that that made him Jewish
too.
Two weeks later Simon
showed up for a Shabbos meal. He told everyone how that night was his favorite
moment of the semester because it was the first Shabbos of his life. His mother
had even asked him to take a picture with me, which obviously wasn't going to
happen on Shabbos. Instead, I invited Simon to come back during the week to put
on tefillin, promising him we could take as many pictures as he wanted. They
tell me that Simon wants to learn more about Yiddishkeit (Torah Judaism) and go
on Birthright this summer, incredible results from our Sigma Chi menorah
lighting.

Daniel came to us as a pre-med student who had just come back from
a summer in Israel tour program. He was inspired and loved to learn. After a
period of time with us, he eventually went back to learn in yeshiva in Israel.
When Daniel returned to USC I didn't even recognize him. He had grown a full
beard, something that didn't sit well with his Persian family, who said he
looked like an Ayatollah and that he would never be able to get a job.
Baruch Hashem ('G-d be
blessed'), Daniel finished medical school and became a successful and
well-respected cardiologist. Fast forward about 20 years to a hospital board
meeting to pick a new chief of cardiology, with someone suggesting Daniel for
the job.
Daniel's relatively young
age generated some hesitating, but then one board member pointed out that with
his beard, Daniel looked much older than he really was. So not only didn't the
beard hold Daniel back in his career, it actually gave him the ability to be
the hospital's youngest chief of cardiology ever.

Andrew was the frattiest of frat kids. The first time his sister
dragged him to our Chabad House for a Shabbos meal, he was out the door within
20 minutes. But we got him to come to us on Pesach, and after that he started
showing up for meals and to learn with us, and was growing religiously.
Somewhere along the way,
Andrew decided to start wearing his yarmulke (kippah, 'skull cap') on campus,
which was a big step, because he always felt that people were staring at him.
In time, Andrew started doing job interviews and he was up for an internship
with a big firm, a position that he was sure he wasn't going to land because he
had worn his yarmulke to the interview. That weekend he came to me and told me
that maybe wearing his yarmulke hadn't been the smartest idea.
I assured him that he would
never lose out by wearing a yarmulke. Thankfully, Andrew got his internship,
eventually moving on to a big firm while also earning a master's degree.
One day, the guy sitting
next to Andrew in shul told him he was looking for a CFO. There were plenty of
qualified candidates out there to pick from, but this guy wanted someone he
could feel comfortable with -- a frum yid (mitzvah-observant Jew) with a yarmulke
-- and he hired Andrew. In the end, Andrew got to see that my words were really
true; it wasn't any of his fancy degrees that got him his job as a CFO; it was
none other than his yarmulke.

When we re-opened in Fall 2021 for the first time post-Covid, we
were expecting to have years of rebuilding ahead of us, but baruch Hashem, that
wasn't the case. We made sheva brachos (a first-week-after-the-wedding
celebratory meal) for our daughter that first Shabbos, and in addition to our
family guests, 180 students showed up for the Shabbos meals, a number that
jumped to 300 the following week. It's crazy how the school that wasn't
supposed to have any Jewish life now has 250 students or more every Shabbos.
Our budget for Shabbos meals during the fall semester was close to $150,000!
But the money is well spent
-- you can't imagine the impact of a Shabbos meal at a Chabad House. For many,
it is their first experience with Mitzvah Judaism. Students tell us that it
feels like their home away from home, even though it is actually nothing like
their homes at all. It is their introduction to the Jewish community, where
they see a Shabbos, hear brief Torah speeches, and most importantly, observe
the interactions of a religious Jewish family. They get a genuine taste of what
it means to be involved, to have a life that is focused on an ideal, and that
becomes a gateway to everything else.Is what we do hard? Yes. Is it rewarding?
Absolutely.
Imagine what it means to
host 180 kids for Shabbos meals two days after you made a wedding. Or when my
wife had a baby, we still had students that Shabbos. If we have a Thursday
night East Coast wedding, we fly home Friday morning, ready to do whatever we
need to.
It's a different life, but
it's our life, and we wouldn't trade it for anything in the world.

Yechiel London Ztzal, was the Dean of the High School Division. He would do his
best to straighten out teenagers. Some did really go off the deep end. He would
always say: “I DON’T UNDERSTAND, I JUST
DON’T UNDERSTAND” when they did nonsense. I was close to 22 at the time
and I both understood the Rabbi but was young enough to understand the teen.
But when George Clooney
comes out with antisemitic and anti-Israeli statements. (Not to mention Mel
Gibson) Then how in the world can the TV advertise his latest movie and the
theaters show his latest movie. I could not care if he is directed by Cecile B.
Demille and a good an actor as Lionel Barrymore, he is antisemitic!
The logic on the news is
sometimes also missing. How does the IDF let a female soldier in the most
sensitive security position carry on a romance with an Arab from Ramallah? How
did they let Arabs work inside a military and one an illegal? Why did they not
shoot down a drone that flew over the Iron Dome and Rafael Missile Factory and
then the port of Haifa with all our ships because it was only a spy drone?
It is not only I don’t
understand. I am incapable of understanding such stupidity.
