Parsha Ki Savo Part 1
The following is a short
summary of the Parsha. I plan ble Neder to write what I wanted to write during
next week.
Rabbi Shimon Bar Yochai
said three gifts are given to the Bnei Yisrael. Brachos 5A. The
Holy One, blessed be He, gave Israel three precious gifts, and all of them were
given only through sufferings. These are: The Torah, the Land of Israel and the
world to come. Whence do we know this of the Torah? — Because it is said: Happy
is the man whom Thou chasten, o Lord, and teach him out of Thy law. Psalm 94:12.
Whence of the Land of Israel? — Because it is written: As a man chastens his
son, so the Lord thy God chastens thee, Deut. 8:5. and after that it is
written: For the Lord thy God brings thee into a good land. Deut. 8:7
Whence of the world to come? — Because it is written: For the commandment is a
lamp, and the teaching is light, and reproofs of sufferings are the way of
life. Prov. 6:23
The week started off with a siren that caught all of central area
between Yemen-Saudi Arabia – Yarden and the Airport Area under attack. Catching
up on ten to fifteen lost minutes for a workaholic who works until he falls
asleep typing is a great loss. Combine that with another power failure with
less electrical workers due to reserve call-up and more time is lost. This are
part of the sufferings of Eretz Yisrael and the desire to teach Torah.
Our Parsha discusses coming into Eretz Yisrael and the Bikkurim
aka first fruits. Then comes the confession of ownership and the donation to
the Cohain at that time.
As for a place in the next world we are told to follow with all
our heart the commandments. We are not to deviate.
The Parsha continues with tribes standing for the blessings and
curses on the mountains by Schem. We end off with the blessings for following
the Mitzvos and the curses for violating the Mitzvos.
26:1
And it shall be, when thou art come in unto the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee
for an inheritance, and dost possess it, and dwell therein; 2 that
thou shalt take of the first of all the fruit of the ground, which thou shalt
bring in from thy land that the LORD thy God gives thee; and thou shalt put it
in a basket and shalt go unto the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to
cause His name to dwell there.
I have a lot to write
and not make a copy and paste of 10 or 15 years ago of what I wrote in the past
and you would not have known the difference. I am working on a number of
projects with home improvement, putting in electrical solar generation and
stowage in case of blackout and/or off the grid completely.
I am on a diet and
losing weight but no bread, sugar and gym workouts for a 77year old man is
tiring. Ble Neder will make it up next week with quality work.
… 29:1 And Moses called unto all Israel,
and said unto them: Ye have seen all that the LORD did before your eyes in the
land of Egypt unto Pharaoh, and unto all his servants, and unto all his
land; 2 the great trials which thine eyes saw, the signs and those
great wonders; 3 but the LORD hath not given you a heart to know, and
eyes to see, and ears to hear, unto this day. 4 And I have led you
forty years in the wilderness; your clothes are not waxen old upon you, and thy
shoe is not waxen old upon thy foot. 5 Ye have not eaten bread,
neither have ye drunk wine or strong drink; that ye might know that I am the
LORD your God. 6 And when ye came unto this place, Sihon the king of
Heshbon, and Og the king of Bashan, came out against us unto battle, and we
smote them. 7 And we took their land, and gave it for an inheritance
unto the Reubenites, and to the Gadites, and to the half-tribe of the
Manassites. 8 Observe therefore the words of this covenant, and do
them, that ye may make all that ye do to prosper.
Elul
Rabbi Yosef Tzvi ben
Porat put out at least 10 youtube lectures on Elul. “Where is Rachamim Pauli to
his readers?” I ask myself. As much as I know on the subject, I am incapable of
putting out ten lectures between 30 and 40 minutes on the subject. So I do what
I can. I start off with Rabbi Pinchas Winston persections@torah.org
THE DAYS ARE passing very quickly
and Rosh
Hashanah is fast approaching. As in the old days, it is making
people uptight. But unlike in the old days when people became nervous because
they knew the Day of Judgment was coming, people are mostly nervous today about
all those hours spent praying, and all the meals they have to prepare for
family and guests, three days’ worth this year.
That
may sound a little cynical, but this is what people have told me. The reality
of many hours in shul is real, as is all the preparations
for the Chag. But judgment is less real given how
people seem to make it through each year regardless of how well they daven. It almost feels as if God is overlooking
our sins, but family and guests don’t overlook poor preparation.
Of
course, that thinking is not only silly but dangerous. This week’s parsha reminds us of that, and so does this
past year. We’ve made it through many Rosh Hashanahs unscathed in the past, only to live
to see all hell break loose during a particular year. It’s dangerous to mistake
God’s patience for a lack of care, or to assume that escaping judgment one year
doesn’t add culpability to future years. Sins can accumulate from year to year
if we don’t work hard to erase them in the current year.
One can be improper
within the guidelines of Torah. Over the years, I have lost control of my
weight. When I was working on the Lavi Project, I was 80kg or like 180 lbs. Out
of nerves because people were being fired, I started eating. Having a man who
was two level boss above my boss working in the next room made me more nervous.
Soon I gained 10 kilograms. My mother got ill, more weight and then an illness
here or there. Even though I made the blessings before and after the meals, I
had become a man 46 kilograms heavier or 165% of my original weight. A
tremendous Tikkun had to be made. I made an effort last year only to revert
back and again I am on the right track but still have a long way to fully return
if I ever can.
Although, the Torah
does not view over-weight as a sin I am violating the Mitzvah of “Verity guard
your life”. Since morbid obesity is a danger, then I am a violator for years.
The sin is basically repeating my sin
against myself. This is one example of a sin repeating itself from year to
year.
One sin that I don’t
want to repeat is that of not making the Eruv Tavshillin or telling you readers
about it. We need one from Rosh Hashanah until Shabbos. For it is normally
forbidden to prepare on Yom Tov to after Yom Tov. Because of Oneg Shabbos
(enjoyment of Shabbos), The Rabbis allowed for An Erev for cooking from Yom Tov
for Shabbos. Outside of Eretz Yisrael this will apply for Sukkos and Shemini
Atzeres/Simchas Torah. Blessed are YOU … of the Universe (Olam-world) … who commanded us concerning the Eruv. (See
Machzor of Rosh Hashanah-Yom Tov.)
The Halachos of Yom
Tov Rosh Hashanah, has a lot of laws that are for Prayers and the blowing of
the Shofar. I was on the laws of fasting right before that but with only a
short time, Rabbi Mimran and I skipped ahead to the laws of Yom Kippur. And of
course afterwards Sukkos, Lulav and Esrog.
Last year, the doctor
put me on two diuretics and told me that I have to drink during the fast. The
latest Cardiologist put me on three diuretics but said I could fast. Now I have
to go to my General Practitioner as the question arises if I can stop for a few
days the diuretics or not and then I could fast. Otherwise, I can’t.
One has to know what
to ask the doctors before the fast or a Rabbi who understands these things. The
general rule is that diabetics don’t fast, cancer patients undergoing treatment
don’t fast and heart patients may or may not fast. As a Rav it is easier for me
to Poskim for others. However, one does not Poskim for himself. (I could be too
strict on Yom Kippur or too strict on Pekuach Nefesh or pampering myself be too
lenient). The Halacha is: IF ONE IS FASTING ON YOM KIPPUR AND FEELS TOO WEAK OR
THE FAST IS HARMING HIS/HER HEALTH, ONE CAN STOP.
If one must drink as
usual and is not fasting for that reason, not eating makes no sense and I went
to one of the Talmidim of Rabbi Moshe Feinstein Ztzal and was told that I could
eat – but not over eat. Kiddush is said. Since it is a fast, I would do Kiddush
on Bread and not wine.
Those who have to
drink should freeze half a large soda bottle with water and on Yom Kippur add
cold water to last most of the davening.
A few words on the “Bring
them Home” protestors. My heart goes out to the families of the 101 prisoners
in Gaza dead or alive. However, when Rabbi Yosef Tzvi Ben Porat Shlita heard
them say “We’re doing all we can.” He said “That is not so!” I will explain now
in my words what he said. You are barking up the wrong tree. Long ago the
Sinwar Squirrel jumped from your tree to a different one. You want to do all
you can – then (my thoughts) protest and request from the source who can open
or close Sinwar’s heart or mind. First as a starter your protest can start
after Shabbos ends. Secondly, storm the heavens on Rosh Hashanah and Yom
Kippur. That is the time it is declared who will be at peace and who will be
restless. Who will die in due time and who will live a short life. Who will die
by earthquake, disease, who by sword and who by beeper. Think of America in G-D
we trust. Don’t trust in politicians left or right for in that very day you design
perish – David HaMelech.
People who know me
know very well that I am a number of friends who are Conservative Rabbis. I
might dispute them over the amount of learning needed for Ordination and the
mixed seating in the Schuls. Before Rabbi Taitz opened up an Orthodox Schul, in
my neighbor, at the age of 21 I would daven in a certain row and 16 year old
Masha and mother would be on one side of me and 15 year old Joyce and mother
would be on the other side of me. I had better concentration of prayer then and
they fortunately dressed modestly in Schul but not for me. The man who became
Rabbi Steve, the head of the Theological Seminary, and I were good friends
then.
But when it came to
Reform, I saw my “Rabbi” when I was 14 basically teaching us Atheism. They make
a joke of Judaism. This week in the Inyanay Diyoma below I posted this article:

The Cosmic Twin of
the Baal Shem Tov
Modified and supplemented by Yerachmiel Tilles from an article by Rabbi

https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5784/1397-54.html
It is a tradition
that in every generation there are Hidden Tzadikim ("righteous
ones") who conceal their greatness from the eyes of men and live amongst
us disguised as simple, ignorant folk. Rabbi Gershon Kitover once asked his
famous brother-in-law, the Baal Shem Tov, the founder of the Chasidic
movement, to reveal to him one of the hidden righteous.
At first, the Baal
Shem Tov refused. But Rabbi Gershon persisted in his request until the Besht finally
relented.
"This Friday
night in shul, look among the crowd of beggars waiting near the door to be
invited for the Shabbat meal. One of them will be a hidden tzadik," the
Baal Shem Tov told Rabbi Gershon, and described the righteous pauper. "But
you must promise not to let on in any way that you are aware of his true
identity."
Rabbi Gershon
readily identified the tzadik-in-disguise and invited him to share his Shabbat
meals. However, that evening, though he carefully scrutinized his guest's every
word and deed at the table, he was unable to discern anything beyond the
ordinary behavior of a wandering pauper. Finally, he could not resist the
temptation to ask his guest to grace the table with some words of Torah.
"Me?! Speak
words of Torah? A beggar the child of beggars, who has scarcely seen the inside
of a cheder? Whatever gave you such an idea, anyway?" asked the guest, a
note of suspicion in his voice.
Rabbi Gershon
quickly let the matter drop.
Finally, he thought,
I have one of the greatest people of the generation at my table-should I indeed
learn nothing from him? Again he pressed his guest to speak words of Torah,
hoping that would reveal something of his well-concealed greatness.
He immediately
resumed his ignorant- beggar pose of the night before, protesting that the very
request was ridiculous.
But at the third
Shabbat meal in the late afternoon, Rabbi Gershon seemed to have finally made
some headway. When he again asked his guest to enlighten him with words of
Torah, the holy beggar's face was transformed. His eyes began to glow with a
Divine light, and his coarse features assumed a sublime grace.
Then he opened his
mouth to speak; but before a single word emerged from his lips, he suddenly
closed them, and with obvious effort, wrenched himself from his seat and bolted
from the room. By the time Rabbi Gershon had collected his wits and run after
him out to the street, he was gone.
The next day, when
Rabbi Gershon came to see the Baal Shem Tov, he was shocked to learn that his
brother-in-law had been ill all Shabbat. At the Friday night meal, the Baal
Shem Tov's disciples had noticed that something was amiss; the next day the
situation had worsened, and at one point, toward the close of Shabbat, it had
seemed that his very life was in jeopardy. But the crisis had passed, thank
G-d, and he was steadily regaining his strength.
When Rabbi Gershon
entered his brother-in-law's room, the Besht said to him: "What have you
done? Because of you, I almost departed from this world.
"You see, every
righteous soul has two faces--one hidden and the other revealed. The tzadik who
ate at your table this Shabbat is my cosmic "twin", whose greatness
must remain hidden for as long as I openly serve as a teacher and guide in the
service of the Almighty.
"But the
temptation for a hidden tsaddik to reveal himself is very great, since every
person desires to manifestly influence his surroundings. Had he done so, my
soul would have had to be concealed from the world, and since I am already
widely known, this meant that I would have had to pass on from my present life.
"Luckily, he
stopped himself just in time."

Glitzenstein 'obm' on Chabad.Org
Why this week? This
Shabbat, Chai [18th] Elul, is the birthdate of the
Baal Shem Tov and the anniversary of his first revealing the Chassidic
movement.
Biographic notes:
Rabbi Yisrael ben Eliezer, the Baal Shem Tov [18 Elul 5458- 6
Sivan/Shavuot 5520 (Sept. 1698 - June 1760)], the Baal Shem Tov ["Master
of the Good Name"-often referred to as "the Besht"
for short], a unique and seminal figure in Jewish history, revealed his identity
as an exceptionally holy person, on his 36th birthday, 18 Elul 5494 (1734
C.E.), and made the until-then underground Chasidic movement public. He wrote
no books, although many works claim to contain his teachings. One available in
English is the excellent annotated translation of Tzava'at Harivash,
published by Kehot.
Rabbi Gershon of
Kitov [? - ca.1760] was the brother-in-law of the Baal Shem Tov and
subsequently an important disciple. He was the recipient of the famous letter
from the Besht about his visit to the heavenly abode of Moshiach, as well as
other important correspondence. In 1747 he moved to the Land of Israel, living
first in Hebron and then in Jerusalem.
