Parsha Ki Seitzei
Last week, we had the
law of exemption from a battle that is not a Mitzvah War. This week, we learn
of the Mitzvah War of conquering from the 7 Nations Eretz Yisrael. Remember
that Moshe is speaking from Parsha Re’eh to Parsha Ki Savo in one long speech
on one day.
21:10 When thou go forth to battle against thine
enemies, and the LORD thy God delivers them into thy hands, and thou carry them
away captive, 11 and see among the captives a woman of goodly form,
and thou hast a desire unto her, and would take her to thee to wife;
[and you desire her,] you may take [her] for yourself as a
wife: [Not that you are commanded to take this
woman as a wife,] but Scripture [in permitting this marriage] is speaking only
against the evil inclination [, which drives him to desire her]. For if the
Holy One, blessed is He, would not permit her to him, he would take her
illicitly. [The Torah teaches us, however, that] if he marries her, he will
ultimately come to despise her, as it says after this, “If a man has [two
wives-one beloved and the other despised]” (verse 15); [moreover] he will
ultimately father through her a wayward and rebellious son (see verse 18). For
this reason, these passages are juxtaposed. — [Tanchuma 1]
In 90% of the cases,
women don’t like to be taken captive. Plutarch describes the Sabine Women but
in most cases they will despise being taken as a captive. He is not to rape the
woman in theory and tell her that he is taking her as his wife.
12 then
thou shalt bring her home to thy house; and she shall shave her head, and pare
her nails; 13 and she shall put the raiment of her captivity from off
her, and shall remain in thy house, and bewail her father and her mother a full
month; and after that thou mayest go in unto her, and be her husband, and she
shall be thy wife.
She is given a full
month to mourn her family. The shaving of the head and the growing of the nails
are to make her physically less attractive to you.
14 And
it shall be, if thou have no delight in her, then thou shalt let her go whither
she will; but thou shalt not sell her at all for money, thou shalt not deal
with her as a slave, because thou hast humbled her.
Now she has become his
wife. She might have been beautiful but dumb or spiteful and hating her
captive. She might not want to cook and wash like a wife. The chance that she
will want to stay positive with her capture is not that great.
There were cases in
Stockholm Syndrome and the kidnapping of Patty Hearst where the victim became
sympathetic with the kidnappers. In the ancient wars, most of the men died or
were killed in battle or sold into slavery.
15 If
a man have two wives, the one beloved, and the other hated, and they have borne
him children, both the beloved and the hated; and if the first-born son be hers
that was hated; 16 then it shall be, in the day that he causes his
sons to inherit that which he has, that he may not make the son of the beloved
the first-born before the son of the hated, who is the first-born;
She hates him from the
capture and eventually the hatred becomes mutual according to many of the
commentators.
17 but
he shall acknowledge the first-born, the son of the hated, by giving him a
double portion of all that he hath; for he is the first-fruits of his strength,
the right of the first-born is his.
The first born shall be
from the first wife even if he found great romance with the second. Before the
Torah was given, Reuven could forfeit his Bechor to Yosef. In fact all the
wives had first-borns before Yosef. Still the whole marriage and servant wives
came about through the love of Rachel.
18 If
a man have a stubborn and rebellious son, that will not hearken to the voice of
his father, or the voice of his mother, and though they chasten him, will not
hearken unto them; 19 then shall his father and his mother lay hold
on him, and bring him out unto the elders of his city, and unto the gate of his
place; 20 and they shall say unto the elders of his city: 'This our
son is stubborn and rebellious, he doth not hearken to our voice; he is a
glutton, and a drunkard.' 21 And all the men of his city shall stone
him with stones, that he die; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of;
and all Israel shall hear, and fear.
The rebellious son
comes about from the captive woman who has hatred for her husband inside and is
transmitted to the son. There are Rabbis who say based on the condition that he
has a voice like his mother and his father that there never was one. It can
only occur between the age of 13 and one day to 13.5years of age. The Gemara in
Sanhedrin says that there was never such a son but is disputed by one Sage who
says here is his grave.
22 And
if a man have committed a sin worthy of death, and he be put to death, and thou
hang him on a tree; 23 his body shall not remain all night upon the
tree, but thou shalt surely bury him the same day; for he that is hanged is a
reproach unto God; that thou defile not thy land which the LORD thy God gives
thee for an inheritance.
We hang the body as an
example and deterrent. People ask why was this man killed? He defiled his
sister, violated a married woman, violated Shabbos and/or Yom Tov or some other
capital offense.
22:1
Thou shalt not see thy brother's ox or his sheep driven away, and hide thyself
from them; thou shalt surely bring them back unto thy brother. 2 And
if thy brother be not nigh unto thee, and thou know him not, then thou shalt
bring it home to thy house, and it shall be with thee until thy brother require
it, and thou shalt restore it to him. 3 And so shalt thou do with his
ass; and so shalt thou do with his garment; and so shalt thou do with every
lost thing of thy brother's, which he hath lost, and thou hast found; thou
mayest not hide thyself.
The Mitzvah is greater
than a Jew you avoid and it is upon you to help even if you are not on speaking
terms.
4 Thou
shalt not see thy brother's ass or his ox fallen down by the way, and hide
thyself from them; thou shalt surely help him to lift them up again.
I know next to nothing
about cars and my strength is not that of a man in his twenties. I tried to get
an oil cap open for my neighbor, but it did not help.
5 A
woman shall not wear that which pertains unto a man, neither shall a man put on
a woman's garment; for whosoever does these things is an abomination unto the
LORD thy God.
Cross dressing and
transgenderism is an abomination before the L-RD your G-D. This is not a
political statement, it goes for all generations whether the Jews are outside
of Yisrael or living in Yisrael.
6 If
a bird's nest chance to be before thee in the way, in any tree or on the
ground, with young ones or eggs, and the dam sitting upon the young, or upon
the eggs, thou shalt not take the dam with the young; 7 thou shalt in
any wise let the dam go, but the young thou mayest take unto thyself; that it
may be well with thee, and that thou mayest prolong thy days.
There are two Mitzvos that talk about prolonging your days. One
is honoring a parent and the other is the bird’s nest. Elisha ben Abuya once
saw a father tell his son to climb a tree and fetch the young birds. The youth
did so, lost his grip and fell to his death. He then turned from being the
beloved teacher of Rebbe Meir, the miracle worker to anti-religious. There is a
whole story how fire consumed his body but did not burn it upon his death. Only
when Rebbe Meir put his cloak upon it, did the fire stop. The Rabbis in the end
ruled that prolong your days is life in the world to come.
8 When
thou build a new house, then thou shalt make a parapet for thy roof, that thou
bring not blood upon thy house, if any man fall from thence.
Not only shall you not be a safety hazard to others, but your
house shall not be dangerous for yourself or others.
9 Thou
shalt not sow thy vineyard with two kinds of seed; lest the fulness of the seed
which thou hast sown be forfeited together with the increase of the
vineyard.
This prohibition we
saw in Vayikra Parsha Kedoshim Chapter 19. One cannot sew two kinds of seeds, wear
a mixture of linen and two different species of animals together such as a
horse and a donkey to produce a mule.
10 Thou
shalt not plow with an ox and an ass together. 11 Thou shalt not wear
a mingled stuff, wool and linen together.
This forbidden mixture
is called Shatnez (see the Chabad Story this week).
12 Thou
shalt make thee twisted cords upon the four corners of thy covering, wherewith
thou cover thyself.
All four cornered
garments require Tzitzis.
13 If
any man take a wife, and go in unto her, and hate her, 14 and lay
wanton charges against her, and bring up an evil name upon her, and say: 'I
took this woman, and when I came nigh to her, I found not in her the tokens of
virginity'; 15 then shall the father of the damsel, and her mother,
take and bring forth the tokens of the damsel's virginity unto the elders of
the city in the gate. 16 And the damsel's father shall say unto the
elders: 'I gave my daughter unto this man to wife, and he hates
her; 17 and, lo, he hath laid wanton charges, saying: I found not in
thy daughter the tokens of virginity; and yet these are the tokens of my
daughter's virginity.' And they shall spread the garment before the elders of
the city. 18 And the elders of that city shall take the man and
chastise him. 19 And they shall fine him a hundred shekels of silver,
and give them unto the father of the damsel, because he hath brought up an evil
name upon a virgin of Israel; and she shall be his wife; he may not put her
away all his days.
I know of a case on
the wedding night that the bride hated the husband, this case is reverse. In
the old days, people would betroth a woman with a contract, money or
intercourse. Then they would delay the wedding. If the woman was not betrothed
by the last method or not betrothed at all, and not found to be a virgin after
12.5 years, she is considered a free agent. So our case only belongs to a young
maid, fully halachically engaged in her father’s house and of course not by intercourse.
If he brings such a ridiculous claim against a betrothed wife! Because he his ruined
her reputation in public, he can never divorce her. She may also become a nag
for this and he has gotten his punishment in this world.
20 But
if this thing be true, that the tokens of virginity were not found in the
damsel; 21 then they shall bring out the damsel to the door of her
father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones that she
die; because she hath wrought a wanton deed in Israel, to play the harlot in
her father's house; so shalt thou put away the evil from the midst of
thee.
This applies to a woman
who was engaged with a contract and up to a certain age.
22 If
a man be found lying with a woman married to a husband, then they shall both of
them die, the man that lay with the woman, and the woman; so shalt thou put
away the evil from Israel.
This is adultery.
23 If
there be a damsel that is a virgin betrothed unto a man, and a man find her in
the city, and lie with her; 24 then ye shall bring them both out unto
the gate of that city, and ye shall stone them with stones that they die: the
damsel, because she cried not, being in the city; and the man, because he hath
humbled his neighbor's wife; so thou shalt put away the evil from the midst of
thee.
Betrothed in ancient
times meant married and time was given for the wedding preparations for the consummation.
25 But
if the man find the damsel that is betrothed in the field, and the man take
hold of her, and lie with her; then the man only that lay with her shall
die. 26 But unto the damsel thou shalt do nothing; there is in the
damsel no sin worthy of death; for as when a man rises against his neighbor,
and slays him, even so is this matter. 27 For he found her in the
field; the betrothed damsel cried, and there was none to save her.
The man is treated
like a rapist and she innocent as she was in a field far away from other people
or law enforcement.
28 If
a man find a damsel that is a virgin, that is not betrothed, and lay hold on
her, and lie with her, and they be found; 29 then the man that lay
with her shall give unto the damsel's father fifty shekels of silver, and she
shall be his wife, because he hath humbled her; he may not put her away all his
days.
He has humbled her; her father must be paid instead of giving a
dowry and he can never divorce her. Chances are she dislikes him like the
captive woman.
23:1
A man shall not take his father's wife, and shall not uncover his father's
skirt.
We have had this in
Parsha Acherei Mos, Kedoshim Chapters 18 and 20.
2 He
that is crushed or maimed in his privy parts shall not enter into the assembly
of the LORD.
A pure hermaphrodite,
is considered a male for marriage. A eunuch, privates crushed by an accident or
disease. There was a case in Gaza of a child brought up as a girl that was
really a boy (born essentially of indeterminate sex called a “Tum-tum” in Hebrew).
Upon a stay in Tel HaShomer Hospital suddenly needed re-education and sexual
alignment.
3 A
bastard shall not enter into the assembly of the LORD; even to the tenth generation
shall none of his enter into the assembly of the LORD.
It usually happens
that these poor Maumzerim can only marry among themselves or become celibate. A
Maumzer (male) can marry a potential convert and have children with her and
have them convert and she converts after menopause. In any event, they usually
don’t last ten generations as Maumzerim.
4 An
Ammonite or a Moabite shall not enter into the assembly of the LORD; even to
the tenth generation shall none of them enter into the assembly of the LORD forever; 5 because
they met you not with bread and with water in the way, when ye came forth out
of Egypt; and because they hired against thee Balaam the son of Beor from
Pethor of Aram-naharaim, to curse thee. 6 Nevertheless the LORD thy
God would not hearken unto Balaam; but the LORD thy God turned the curse into a
blessing unto thee, because the LORD thy God loved thee. 7 Thou shalt
not seek their peace nor their prosperity all thy days forever.
This applies to males
only. For it seems that the females kept the hospitality of the daughters of
Lot.
8 Thou
shalt not abhor an Edomite, for he is thy brother; thou shalt not abhor an Egyptian,
because thou were a stranger in his land. 9 The children of the third
generation that are born unto them may enter into the assembly of the
LORD.
A Ger Tzedek from Edom
perhaps because of genes from Yitzchak becomes a full Jew in the third
generation. It seems more likely that one would intermarry with a Jew by then.
10 When
thou go forth in camp against thine enemies, then thou shalt keep thee from
every evil thing. 11 If there be among you any man, that is not clean
by reason of that which chances him by night, then shall he go abroad out of
the camp, he shall not come within the camp. 12 But it shall be, when
evening comes on, he shall bathe himself in water; and when the sun is down, he
may come within the camp.
What we call a “wet
dream” and for this reason we keep the Cohain Gadol awake all night Yom Kippur
so he does not have such an accidental occurrence.
13 Thou
shalt have a place also without the camp, whither thou shalt go forth
abroad. 14 And thou shalt have a paddle among thy weapons; and it
shall be, when thou sit down abroad, thou shalt dig therewith, and shalt turn
back and cover that which cometh from thee.
To keep your military
or family encampment pure for prayers and sanitation, one takes a shovel/paddle
and digs a hole in the ground for a bowel movement and then covers it up. [I
might assume that for Shabbos, such holes and designated earth/rocks/sand was placed
near the holes before Shabbos – I have not seen anything in Halacha, but based
on what I know, I assume this is what they did.]
15 For
the LORD thy God walks in the midst of thy camp, to deliver thee, and to give
up thine enemies before thee; therefore shall thy camp be holy; that He see no
unseemly thing in thee, and turn away from thee.
You and I might not
see, hear or feel G-D in our area on Shabbos BUT: Holy, holy, holy is the L-RD
OF HOSTS, the whole earth is full of HIS glory! Full means just that from all
61 sub atomic particles to the large galaxy clusters.
16 Thou
shalt not deliver unto his master a bondman that is escaped from his master
unto thee; 17 he shall dwell with thee, in the midst of thee, in the
place which he shall choose within one of thy gates, where it likes him best;
thou shalt not wrong him.
It turns out despite,
the WOKE antisemitism, that Simon Lagree was not Jewish.
18 There
shall be no harlot of the daughters of Israel, neither shall there be a
sodomite of the sons of Israel. 19 Thou shalt not bring the hire of a
harlot, or the price of a dog, into the house of the LORD thy God for any vow;
for even both these are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.
Both female and male
prostitution is forbidden and nothing from a prostitute can become holy. The
story in Ketubos Daf 70B of the enormous wealthy prostitute who converted to
Judaism ends with her giving her money to the poor.
20 Thou
shalt not lend upon interest to thy brother: interest of money, interest of
victuals, interest of anything that is lent upon interest. 21 Unto a
foreigner thou mayest lend upon interest; but unto thy brother thou shalt not
lend upon interest; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all that thou put
thy hand unto, in the land whither thou go in to possess it.
The exception is a
business loan and a special contract has to be written.
22 When
thou shalt vow a vow unto the LORD thy God, thou shalt not be slack to pay it;
for the LORD thy God will surely require it of thee; and it will be sin in
thee. 23 But if thou shalt forbear to vow, it shall be no sin in
thee. 24 That which is gone out of thy lips thou shalt observe and
do; according as thou hast vowed freely unto the LORD thy God, even that which
thou hast promised with thy mouth.
Put your money or Korban
where your mouth is.
25 When
thou come into thy neighbor's vineyard, then thou mayest eat grapes until thou
have enough at thine own pleasure; but thou shalt not put any in thy vessel.
The forgotten cluster
or corn of the field for the poor.
Rashi views it as the
hired worker collecting the harvest and this applies to all fruits not only
grapes. When you enter your neighbor’s vineyard: Scripture is
speaking of a worker [who enters his employer’s vineyard to work there]. — [B.M. 87b]
26 When
thou come into thy neighbor's standing corn, then thou mayest pluck ears with
thy hand; but thou shalt not move a sickle unto thy neighbor's standing corn.
What Rashi mentioned
in the above Pasuk applies to the worker and the grain harvest.
24:1
When a man taketh a wife, and marries her, then it cometh to pass, if she find
no favor in his eyes, because he hath found some unseemly thing in her, that he
writes her a bill of divorcement, and gives it in her hand, and sends her out
of his house,
If there are children
involved, the Rabbis tend to make Shalom Beis. However as Dr. Phil says: “Children
would rather be from a broken home than live in one.” There are times when it
becomes a Mitzvah to Divorce.
2 and
she departs out of his house, and goes and becomes another man's wife, 3 and
the latter husband hates her, and writes her a bill of divorcement, and giveth
it in her hand, and sends her out of his house; or if the latter husband die,
who took her to be his wife; 4 her former husband, who sent her away,
may not take her again to be his wife, after that she is defiled; for that is
abomination before the LORD; and thou shalt not cause the land to sin, which
the LORD thy God giveth thee for an inheritance.
This would spread
lewdness throughout the land. So contrary to “Soap Operas” the practice is forbidden
in the Torah.
5 When
a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out in the host, neither shall he be
charged with any business; he shall be free for his house one year, and shall
cheer his wife whom he hath taken.
Outside of a Mitzvah War, the duty of the husband is to bring
joy during the first year to the wife.
6 No
man shall take the mill or the upper millstone to pledge; for he taketh a man's
life to pledge.
If one loans a fellow
Jew, without interest, money; he cannot take certain things like a blanket in
the winter overnight. In modern times, one takes deferred checks instead of a
pledge.
7 If
a man be found stealing any of his brethren of the children of Israel, and he
deal with him as a slave, and sell him; then that thief shall die; so shalt
thou put away the evil from the midst of thee.
This is “Thou shall
not steal” of the Asera Dibros as robbing like a gangster or
stealing-embezzling and other fraud are different Negative Mitzvos.
8 Take
heed in the plague of leprosy, that thou observe diligently, and do according
to all that the priests the Levites shall teach you, as I commanded them, so ye
shall observe to do. 9 Remember what the LORD thy God did unto
Miriam, by the way as ye came forth out of Egypt.
Double warning for
purity and not speaking Lashon HaRa.
10 When
thou dost lend thy neighbor any manner of loan, thou shalt not go into his
house to fetch his pledge. 11 Thou shalt stand without, and the man
to whom thou dost lend shall bring forth the pledge without unto
thee. 12 And if he be a poor man, thou shalt not sleep with his
pledge; 13 thou shalt surely restore to him the pledge when the sun
goes down, that he may sleep in his garment, and bless thee; and it shall be
righteousness unto thee before the LORD thy God.
I gave the example of
the blanket but some poor were so poor that the men basically worked with loin
cloths during the day. Back then there was no welfare or government help and
they would rather work an borrow than look for a handout. How we have fallen in
our generation!
14 Thou
shalt not oppress a hired servant that is poor and needy, whether he be of thy
brethren, or of thy strangers that are in thy land within thy
gates. 15 In the same day thou shalt give him his hire, neither shall
the sun go down upon it; for he is poor, and sets his heart upon it: lest he
cry against thee unto the LORD and it be sin in thee.
Most daily workers
needed their wages to eat. There were no unions, companies, etc.
16 The
fathers shall not be put to death for the children, neither shall the children
be put to death for the fathers; every man shall be put to death for his own
sin.
You are responsible
for your own sins.
17 Thou
shalt not pervert the justice due to the stranger, or to the fatherless; nor
take the widow's raiment to pledge. 18 But thou shalt remember that
thou were a bondman in Egypt, and the LORD thy God redeemed thee thence;
therefore I command thee to do this thing.
Do what you can to
help the widow and the orphan.
19 When
thou reap thy harvest in thy field, and hast forgot a sheaf in the field, thou
shalt not go back to fetch it; it shall be for the stranger, for the
fatherless, and for the widow; that the LORD thy God may bless thee in all the
work of thy hands.
Leave over the
forgotten sheaf, corner of the field for the poor.
20 When
thou beats thine olive-tree, thou shalt not go over the boughs again; it shall
be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. 21 When
thou gathers the grapes of thy vineyard, thou shalt not glean it after thee; it
shall be for the stranger, for the fatherless, and for the widow. 22 And
thou shalt remember that thou were a bondman in the land of Egypt; therefore I
command thee to do this thin.
What remains after your harvest is for the poor.
25:1
If there be a controversy between men, and they come unto judgment, and the
judges judge them, by justifying the righteous, and condemning the
wicked, 2 then it shall be, if the wicked man deserve to be beaten,
that the judge shall cause him to lie down, and to be beaten before his face,
according to the measure of his wickedness, by number. 3 Forty
stripes he may give him, he shall not exceed; lest, if he should exceed, and
beat him above these with many stripes, then thy brother should be dishonored
before thine eyes.
There is always a doctor and the whipper working for the Beis
Din. When the court declares 40 lashes, the man with the whip says 13 words about
atonement from sin. After every three words one stripe on the left back, one of
the right and one in the middle; the doctor exams the man. If he soils himself,
we stop and no more than 3 sets of 13 are administered aka no more than 39 lashes.
The object is punishment and a deterrent and not to kill the man being whipped.
4 Thou
shalt not muzzle the ox when he treads out the corn.
Judaism is a merciful
religion even to dumb animals and not one of cruelty.
5 If
brethren dwell together, and one of them die, and have no child, the wife of
the dead shall not be married abroad unto one not of his kin; her husband's
brother shall go in unto her, and take her to him to wife, and perform the duty
of a husband's brother unto her. 6 And it shall be, that the first-born
that she bears shall succeed in the name of his brother that is dead, that his
name be not blotted out of Israel.
This essentially was
similar to the case of the daughters of Zelophad with the portion of
inheritance in Israel and the family plot. So the brother would marry the
childless widow and her child would inherit.
7 And
if the man like not to take his brother's wife, then his brother's wife shall
go up to the gate unto the elders, and say: 'My husband's brother refuses to
raise up unto his brother a name in Israel; he will not perform the duty of a
husband's brother unto me.' 8 Then the elders of his city shall call
him, and speak unto him; and if he stand, and say: 'I like not to take
her'; 9 then shall his brother's wife draw nigh unto him in the
presence of the elders, and loose his shoe from off his foot, and spit in his
face; and she shall answer and say: 'So shall it be done unto the man that doth
not build up his brother's house.' 10 And his name shall be called in
Israel the house of him that had his shoe loosed.
Nowadays without the
true inheritance of the land, in most cases we preform Hatlitza – the taking
off of the shoe. However, if the brother takes the widow and she agrees to be
with him, we do not tell them to separate.
11 When
men strive together one with another, and the wife of the one draws near to
deliver her husband out of the hand of him that smites him, and puts forth her
hand, and takes him by the secrets; 12 then thou shalt cut off her
hand, thine eye shall have no pity.
Back then, there was
no underwear except the pants of the Cohain. Such a woman who grabs the secret
parts of another man other than her husband deserves punishment. Now if she
took a shovel and hit the other man there is no punishment.
13 Thou
shalt not have in thy bag diverse weights, a great and a
small. 14 Thou shalt not have in thy house diverse measures, a great
and a small. 15 A perfect and just weight shalt thou have; a perfect
and just measure shalt thou have; that thy days may be long upon the land which
the LORD thy God giveth thee. 16 For all that do such things, even
all that do unrighteous, are an abomination unto the LORD thy God.
Fair and standard
weights and measures as in Parsha Kedoshim Vayikra 20 Ephod Tzedek, Hin Tzedek.
17 Remember
what Amalek did unto thee by the way as ye came forth out of
Egypt; 18 how he met thee by the way, and smote the hindmost of thee,
all that were enfeebled in thy rear, when thou were faint and weary; and he
feared not God. 19 Therefore it shall be, when the LORD thy God hath
given you rest from all thine enemies round about, in the land which the LORD
thy God gives thee for an inheritance to possess it, that thou shalt blot out
the remembrance of Amalek from under heaven; thou shalt not forget.
The Mitzvah is to
destroy Amalek. In case you have a double ask yourself does the Sinwar brothers
act like Amalek or Yishmael?
Mussar for Elul
Last week, I planned to
write something for repentance on Elul but the story of the murder of the
athlete by the jealous husband awakened in me the desire to save a life
possibly an acquaintance or distant relative of a reader. At this point, there
is nothing I can do more than the Rabbis who instructed the Charedim Knesset
Members to push for a hostage deal. So those lives are in the hands of the
Prime Minister and even more so Sinwar as we don’t see him moving towards a
deal. He is demanding more murderers early in the exchange.
It is a great pity that
most people do not consult Rabbis or listen to their advice. Recently, I read
on the Facebook page of somebody who calls me ‘father’ but does not ask for

States for treatment and the delayed treatment caused her pain and the not
going to the hospital with a lack of a good lawyer cost her tens of thousands

My friend Denise told me

Yehudah Pryce spent 16
years in prison, underwent personal and spiritual transformation, and decided
to become a Jew.
Yehudah Pryce had
just spent three years in county jail. The 22-year-old gang member was involved
in an armed robbery, where he robbed some drug dealers with the help of an
accomplice. The accomplice turned him in for a plea deal and Pryce ended up
behind bars.
After being in jail, he was set to receive his sentencing: 24
years in prison. The court gave him four years for robbery, 10 years for a gang
enhancement, and 10 years for a gun enhancement. He was promptly sent to
Pelican Bay State Prison, a maximum-security prison in California.
“I thought prison was cool,” Pryce said in an
Aish.com interview. “I understood what it meant to be a gangster and a thug and
in this sort of environment. It made sense to me. I was aggressive and
confrontational. I felt like I could outsmart my adversaries. And I didn’t care
if I lived or died.”
Pryce grew up in Orange County, California, a
sunny SoCal enclave. He is the son of a Sri Lankan mother and a Jamaican
father. His parents were divorced, so his mother and Caucasian stepfather
raised him. He felt out of place because in his neighborhood, he was a minority.
“Before I turned 8, my
identity crisis started,” he said. “If I got into an argument with a friend who
was black, he’d bring up my family. I viewed it as my Achilles heel. Everyone
what super invested in race and what I looked like. I couldn’t enjoy my life.”
Pryce didn’t fit in at school, and he didn’t feel like he
belonged at church, either.
“We only went on specific
holidays,” he said. “When my biological father took me to church, we’d try to
get there late and leave early.”
By the time Pryce was a teenager, he was lost – until he
discovered the gang lifestyle. He started selling drugs, stealing, and carrying
guns at 13.
“I wanted to take control
and belong to something,” he said. “I was living the way I wanted and not being
weighed down by my family’s or society’s ideas of what I should or shouldn’t
do. I was not excited by the idea of going to work every day, getting married,
and having kids. It wasn’t enough for me. I was trying to actively avoid that.”
He didn’t have a role model, so he admired the gang members.
“I didn’t look up to
anyone or see myself in anyone,” he said. “Once I got connected to the gang
members – who were violent and sold drugs – I looked up to and respected them.”
When the teen became a gangster, he didn’t belong to any one
gang, and that was on purpose.
“That’s how I could gain
notoriety amongst a multitude of gangs and in the subculture generally,” he
said. “Your reputation precedes itself when you go from gang to gang.”
Pryce was sent to juvenile hall a few times for robberies and
selling drugs. When he was 16, and his entire family was at home, his house was
shot up. No one was hurt, thankfully. The dramatic event didn’t stop him from
leaving the gang lifestyle, either.
“I felt like I belonged,”
he said. “There was a camaraderie. When you are doing crimes together, it
builds a bond among people. No one questioned my identity, either. Maybe it was
out of fear. Beyond that, I loved having guns. There was a sense of power,
where you controlled life and death. It solidified me in this world. I liked
being feared and respected.”
When Pryce legally became an adult, he decided he’d rob drug
dealers, since he thought they wouldn’t call the cops. He’d be less likely to
get arrested. But after his robbery at 19 – when his accomplice turned on him –
his days on the streets were over.
He was now facing over two decades behind bars.
At Pelican Bay, where prisoners spend all day in their cells and
are rarely allowed to go outside, Pryce suddenly had a lot of time to fill. He
picked up some books on Christianity, Buddhism, and Islam, but didn’t connect
with any of them.
And then, Pelican Bay brought in a rabbi to speak to the
prisoners. The rabbi came during lockdown and was there to meet with a few
incarcerated individuals. The prison offered him a chair, but instead, he sat
on the floor with the prisoners.
“It wasn’t meant to make
a statement of any kind,” Pryce said. “His natural character traits stood out
to me.”
That rabbi was only temporary; Pryce would go on to form a
six-year relationship with the next one who came in.
He’d argue with the rabbi about organized religion, calling it
the opiate of the masses. One thing that stood out about the rabbi’s talks was
he said that to be a good person, you didn’t have to be a Jew.
“That made so much sense
to me,” Pryce said. “My problem with religion was people saying their religion
was the only way. I thought, how could you claim that?”
He also learned about discrimination towards the Jewish people
throughout history.
“This, to me, was
evidence that God existed. I wanted to be more connected to it.”
After reading books on Judaism, Pryce turned to the prayer book,
which resonated with him. He memorized the silent Jewish prayer, the Amidah,
by heart.
“I wanted to be able to
pray by heart in case we went into lockdown,” he said. “Then, I could daven three
times a day.”
Pryce’s fellow inmates were anything but encouraging. Race and
identity meant everything behind bars; Pryce was once stabbed simply because
he’s black. Once they saw him learning about Judaism, they taunted him.
“They told me the Jews
wouldn’t accept me,” he said. “They said I wouldn’t fit in.”
Still, Pryce had to follow his heart. He got ahold of a smuggled
smartphone and read up on Judaism as much as he could. He also ordered a tallit
and tefillin and put them on every day, and met a Jewish woman named Ariella on
Instagram. He started keeping kosher in prison and observing Shabbat on his
own. He became a Jewish chapel clerk and ran Jewish groups.
After two years of studying Judaism, he decided he was going to
convert and do an Orthodox conversion – even though he’d never met an Orthodox
Jew.
When he was in his thirteenth year in prison, there was a legal
ruling in California that because the prisons were overrun, inmates who were
convicted prior to the age of 23 could become eligible for early parole.
Three years later, in 2018, after spending 16 years total in
prison, Pryce got out. He was now dating Ariella, who had grown up in an
Orthodox family but had strayed from practice, and he had applied for his
conversion. When he met the Orthodox rabbi who performed conversions, he was
taken aback by the response.
“He didn’t judge me,” Pryce, who is covered in tattoos, said.
“He told me, let’s give it a try. My experience has been one of full
acceptance.”
Pryce joined the Orthodox Jewish community in Irvine and
converted in 2020. He then married Ariella, who moved from Canada to California
to be with him. His family accepted his decision.
“My mom converted from
Islam to Christianity, and my dad is a Baptist, but both of them have respect
for Judaism,” he said. “They saw me as a fully committed gangster and criminal,
and now they see me living this wholesome life. They’re super appreciative of
Judaism and supportive of me.”
Now, Pryce is a father of four and lives in Los Angeles with
Ariella, in an Orthodox Jewish community. He earned his doctorate and is a
clinical social worker at Chabad Treatment Center. He has a large following
on his Instagram, where he shares videos about his life and
combatting antisemitism, and he posted up multiple photos and videos of his
powerful post-Oct. 7 trip to Israel.
He also posts about his personal life, letting his followers
know about what’s going on with his family. Recently, he celebrated his son
Yochanan’s upsherin, the haircut boys get when they turn three,
along with tzitzit, a kippah, and a prayer book. This milestone was a miracle:
When Yochanan was four months old, he was close to death and rushed to the
hospital.
“It was my Jewish community, family, and friends, and Chai Lifeline that enabled my wife and me to weather the storm,” said Pryce. “After five months, my son was released from the hospital and now he has completely recovered.”
Looking back on his life, Pryce can see that he is blessed. And if he could tell anything to his younger self, it would be this: “You’re facing challenges and tough situations and making poor choices. How do you want the next chapters to unfold? You need to create a story that matters. You do matter, and you only have one life to live.”
With every moment, Pryce is using his platform to be a proudly visible Jew, and constantly working on his mission in life: to cultivate a strong relationship with God.
“I want to continue to grow my connection to God,” he said. “The more I draw closer to Him, the clearer everything becomes.”

The Battalion Doctor at first thought that Ari was dead when he was brought before him. But somehow he heard a faint heartbeat. Ari would be unconscious in the hospital for the next 41 days. The doctors did not think that the 22year old who lost part of his right arm, both legs and had extensive bleeding would survive.
“My wife and I agonized
as doctors struggled to figure out how to treat him,” said Pryce.
But with the help of their fellow Jews, they and their beautiful
son pulled through.
Gabi and Leah Spitz were
upbeat regarding Ari’s survival. He had a series of miracles from his initial
injuries. First the bleeding was stopped quickly from the served limbs. Then
the doctor who thought he was dead found the pulse. As soon as he found the
pulse right next to him pulled up an APC Blood Mobile. Then shortly thereafter
the helicopter arrived and he ended up in Soroka Hospital within 41minutes from
injury.
Although the doctors
were pessimistic, Mrs. Leah Spitz, who is Orthodox, kept the faith. She said to
herself, “If HASHEM saved him with so many miracles, he must have some purpose
in this world and things will turn out all right.”
Ari woke-up and is
undergoing physical therapy and training. He and his company or the whole
battalion were bought special protective googles that saved his eyes and his
head was not injured. He was the young man who asked the Rav about how he puts
on Tephillin and somehow, he manages with a Gemara.
He gave up a few limbs
for Am Yisrael but has a positive attitude and striving for more Torah and
Mitzvos.
Miracle this week
The female pilot of the Blackhawk that crashed was trapped in
the cabin. She lost consciousness. It took some time to extract her and her
heart stopped. The other medical teams came and revived her as she was
extracted. The Doctor was about to pronounce her dead but now, thank G-D, she
is seriously injured but no danger to her life.
The Conflicted

Meshulam was a
simple tailor. He lived in the Polish city of Apta. His income was meager, he
barely made enough money to bring home bread for his family. Their life was one
of constant frugality and lack.
His poor economic
situation disturbed him greatly. He looked for ways to increase his income but
never succeeded, always ending up bitterly disappointed.
When he couldn't
stand his desperate situation any longer, he went to the tzadik (righteous
person) who lived in his city, the "Ohev Yisrael" of
Apta.
The Rebbe looked at
him with pity, blessed him warmly and spoke words of comfort and encouragement.
The blessings and
encouragement somewhat bolstered Mehulam's state of mind, but when the days
went by and there was no improvement in this situation, he felt he needed an
additional dose of reassurance.
Also this time he
didn't stint his words of comfort and support. As a result, Meshulam left
feeling uplifted.
The visits to the
Rebbe became a regular occasion. Meshulam held on to the encouragement of the
Rebbe as a drowning man would grab onto a straw.
He would show up
often at the Tzadik’s home, bow his head in submission and he again began to
feel full of hope that the Creator would improve his situation, like it says:
"G-d's salvation can come in the blink of an eye."
But then, one day
when he entered the rebbe's house, it seemed as if another Meshulam had
arrived. It wasn't the same depressed and despairing one. His energetic step
and the smile on his face bore witness that something had changed.
Indeed, Meshulam was
in a great mood. He told the Rebbe that the neighboring village was sold to
another landowner, and as a result an opportunity for a better income opened up
for Meshulam. The new owner requested of Meshulam to supply clothes for his
entire family!
As the orders
started coming in, so did the money. With G-d's help he saw nice profits from
his work.
"Like I shared
my troubles with the Rebbe, I wanted to share the success that, thanks to G-d,
came my way," he said joyfully.
Some time went by
before Meshulam again visited the rebbe. "There are rumors that the new
landowner is actually a Jew who converted," he told the rebbe.
The Ohev Yisrael's
expression became grave. "Check this thoroughly and let me know what you
find," he told Meshulam.
After painstaking
research, it was ascertained that it was indeed the case. He was a Jew who had
left the heritage of his parents and ancestors, and even converted in order to
mix with the gentiles in the surroundings. In this he succeeded; he was
extremely successful in business, to the extent that he was able to buy an
estate close to Apta.
Meshulam told the
Apter rebbe everything he had discovered. The rebbe listed to him intently.
Then he gave him a strict instruction: "Be careful not to sew him a
garment containing shatnez.{1}"
The tailor took this
instruction to heart.
It wasn't long
before the land owner sent him material for a new garment. Meshulem was in a
quandary. He remembered clearly what the rebbe had told him, but his fear of
losing his income gave him no rest. He couldn't make up his mind what to do, so
in the meantime he put the material aside and didn't start sewing the garment.
The expensive
material was lying there useless while Meshulam thought what to do.
After several days
the land owner came to see how the work was progressing. Meshulam tried to
avoid answering. The man became angry, "I understand that you didn't
advance any with your work. You should have told me before and not let me wait
for nothing!" he reproached him.
The tailor tried to
justify himself by telling him that he was not to blame, that it was the Apter
rebbe who had told him not to sew a garment for a Jew that contained shatnez.
The land owner grew
furious. He stormed out of the house of the tailor and made his way to the
house of the Ohev Yisrael to demand to know how the rebbe dared to interfere
with his affairs. How dare he tell Meshulam the tailor not to sew a garment the
way he ordered him to.
The rebbe looked at
him pleasantly, until he was finished spilling his complaints. Then he
responded. "Our Sages said 'A Jew, even if he sins, is a Jew'.
Theoretically what is so special about that saying, can one think differently?
Is it written anywhere that an apostate Jew is not a Jew anymore?
"What the Sages
wanted to highlight was the virtue of the Jewish people. Their words are
directed at someone like you, a Jew who left his religion and converted to
another one. You want to cut off all connection to your G-d and your people,
you're convinced you will succeed. Our Sages explain that you are mistaken.
Your being a Jew cannot be changed. It is impossible to lose or release
yourself from it. Your Jewishness is your essence and you cannot change your
essence.
"Now maybe you
understand why I told Meshulem not to sew you a garment containing shatnez. If
our Sages define you as Jew, in that case you are obligated to keep all the
mitzvot, among them the mitzvah of not wearing shatnez. How can I allow a
Jewish tailor to cause you to fail and commit the sin of shatnez?!"
When the rebbe
finished speaking the expression of the landowner was unreadable. But the
Apter's words must have affected him deeply. Without a word he left the rebbe's
house. Not many days later he returned to the Rebbe, this time to ask him to
show him the way back.
