This week is 56years since my father, Felix,
passed away this week this week is dedicated to elevating his soul.
Parsha Yisro
Last week ended near Sinai in the
wilderness. Moshe up until a year previously, was working for and with his
father-in-law near the mountain of the L-RD. When Moshe was by the burning
bush, he was told to return to this spot. Now he is faithfully executing the
order. Yisro heard all about what happened in Mitzrayim. Tzipporah had
originally went with the children on the journey to Mitzrayim but now she had
returned to her father for her safety and that of the children both from
Pharaoh and from oppressed Bnei Yisrael blaming Moshe.
18:1
Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses' father-in-law, heard of all that God
had done for Moses, and for Israel His people, how that the LORD had brought
Israel out of Egypt. 2 And Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took
Zipporah, Moses' wife, after he had sent her away, 3 and her two
sons; of whom the name of the one was Gershom; for he said: 'I have been a
stranger in a strange land';
As Moshe and the Bnei Yisrael
approached, the local Midian and other Tribes witnessed what was going on so
that Yisro was informed of their coming. Just like with Balak, one cannot hide
2,000,000 or more people traveling in your area.
4 and
the name of the other was Eliezer: 'for the God of my father was my help, and
delivered me from the sword of Pharaoh.'
The root of the name is G-D is my
help(er).
5 And
Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife unto Moses into
the wilderness where he was encamped, at the mount of God; 6 and he
said unto Moses: 'I thy father-in-law Jethro am coming unto thee, and thy wife,
and her two sons with her.'
He appears to be talking to guards
and identifying himself.
7 And
Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and bowed down and kissed him; and
they asked each other of their welfare; and they came into the tent.
We learn from this meeting that
honor is not only shown to parents but to in-laws from one’s wife’s side.
8 And
Moses told his father-in-law all that the LORD had done unto Pharaoh and to the
Egyptians for Israel's sake, all the travail that had come upon them by the
way, and how the LORD delivered them.
A year has passed since they last
met and Moshe is upgrading Yisro on all the plagues and miracles that happened.
9 And
Jethro rejoiced for all the goodness which the LORD had done to Israel, in that
He had delivered them out of the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro
said: 'Blessed be the LORD, who hath delivered you out of the hand of the
Egyptians, and out of the hand of Pharaoh; who hath delivered the people from
under the hand of the Egyptians.
He was a Cohain of HASHEM from
Midian, the son of Avraham.
11 Now
I know that the LORD is greater than all gods; yea, for that they dealt proudly
against them.'
Yisro is a G-D fearing righteous
man. He worshipped about all the gods except perhaps Peor as he did not know
whom the CREATOR was. Now he knew.
Now I know - i.e., I already recognized Him previously, but now I recognize Him even more. Than all the deities. This teaches us
that Jethro was acquainted with all forms of idolatry in the world, for there was no deity he had
not worshiped. Its
meaning is
as Onkelos translates it: “For the very thing the Egyptians plotted to use
against Israel He used against them”; they had planned to destroy Israel by water, so they were destroyed by water. Mida Knegged Mida aka measure for measure.
12 And
Jethro, Moses' father-in-law, took a burnt-offering and sacrifices for God; and
Aaron came, and all the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses'
father-in-law before God.
Korban Olah burnt offering: Ascent-offering – Translate this literally, that it completely
ascends in flames. And
sacrifices. These
were
peace-offerings. And
Aaron…came…. But
where had Moses gone? Was it not he who had gone out to greet Jethro and had caused that all this honor be given to him? The answer is that he was standing and serving them. In the presence of God. From here we learn that when one partakes of a meal where scholars are
present, it is as if he enjoys the radiance of the Divine Presence.
I might think that Yisro as Cohain
Midian offered the sacrifice so the Torah states that Aaron came.
13 And
it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses sat to judge the people; and the
people stood about Moses from the morning unto the evening.
The way I would learn Pshat is that
this took place before Rosh Chodesh Sivan but Rashi brings down a different
accounting. Still the implication is that Yisro left Am Yisrael. Now read Rashi
below:
It was on the following day. It was the day after Yom Kippur; so is stated
in Sifrei. What, then, is meant by “the following day”? It refers to the day after Moses descended Mount Sinai. Now, you must admit that it is impossible to say that it was some other
day prior to
the day after Yom Kippur, for before the giving of the Torah, it would
have been impossible for
Moses
to say: “and I make known
God’s
rules and teachings”; and from when the Torah was given on 6 Sivan until the Yom Kippur, Moses never sat to
judge the people – for on 17 Tammuz, he first descended the mountain, after being there for the 40 days
following 6 Sivan,
and broke the tablets; and on the next day, he ascended the mountain early in the morning, stayed there for 80 days, and descended on Yom Kippur. This
section, then, is written here not in chronological order, for this section of וַיְהִי מִמָּחֳרָת was not said until the second year. Even according to the one who says that Jethro came
before the giving of the Torah, his being sent off to his own land was not
until the second year; for here it says: “Moses sent off his father-in-law…,”
and we find in the account
of Israel’s
journeying under their banners that Moses said to Jethro: “We are traveling to the place…. Please do not
leave us,” and if this return
of Jethro to his land mentioned here was before the giving of the Torah, then from when Moses let him go and he departed, where do we find that he
came back? And if you say that the
account there
does not speak of Jethro but of Chovav, and he was Jethro’s son, I answer that Chovav and Jethro are one and the same person, for
it is written: “from the descendants of Chovav, father-in-law of Moses.”
In my life-time I saw films of the
Lubavitcher Rebbe and there were other Rabbis like the Stipler or his son Rav
Chaim and the Baba Sali who received congregates that waited on line or had a
waiting room area.
That Moses sat…. The people stood… i.e., he was sitting like a
king and all the people were standing. Jethro found this conduct displeasing, for it
indicated a lack of respect for the Israelites, so he reproved him for it, as
it says: “Why are you alone seated while everyone else stands?” From
morning to nightfall. Is it possible to say
this, that he was deciding disputes the entire day? Rather, it is to be understood in
the sense that regarding any judge who judges a
case honestly and correctly, even for one hour, Scripture considers him as if
he were engaged in the study of the Torah all day, and as if he became a partner with the Holy One,
blessed be He, in the act of Creation, of which it says: “There was nightfall and then morning.”
14 And
when Moses' father-in-law saw all that he did to the people, he said: 'What is
this thing that thou do to the people? why sit thou thyself alone, and all the
people stand about thee from morning unto even?'
You are going to exhaust yourself
and the people. You serving them non-stop and they waiting on line for a
judgement.
15 And
Moses said unto his father-in-law: 'Because the people come unto me to inquire
of God; 16 when they have a matter, it comes unto me; and I judge
between a man and his neighbor, and I make them know the statutes of God, and
His laws.'
When they have a [legal] matter, he comes to me - i.e., he who has the matter comes to me.
17 And
Moses' father-in-law said unto him: 'The thing that thou do is not
good. 18 Thou wilt surely wear away, both thou, and this people that
is with thee; for the thing is too heavy for thee; thou art not able to perform
it thyself alone. 19 Hearken now unto my voice, I will give thee
counsel, and God be with thee: be thou for the people before God, and bring
thou the causes unto God.
I will give you advice, and God will be with
you -
in agreeing to my advice; i.e., he said to him, “Go and consult the Almighty.” You be for the people opposite God - means:
be a messenger and intermediary
between them and the Omnipresent, asking Him for verdicts for them. The
matters -
i.e., their matters of dispute.
20 And
thou shalt teach them the statutes and the laws, and shalt show them the way
wherein they must walk, and the work that they must do.
Like you shall teach your son, you
shall teach your students.
21 Moreover
thou shalt provide out of all the people able men, such as fear God, men of
truth, hating unjust gain; and place such over them, to be rulers of thousands,
rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens.
You must perceive - with the prophetic Holy Spirit that is upon you. Men of ability - i.e., rich men, who therefore do not need to flatter or show favoritism to anyone. Men
of truth. These
are trustworthy men, who have sufficient integrity that their promises can be relied on, as a result of
which their words will be respected. Who hate money - i.e., who hate even their own money when it involves a lawsuit, similar to that
which we learn: “Any judge from whom money must be taken through a lawsuit is
not a judge.”
This is being done today with Trump
taking billionaires to voluntary work on DOGE. The 600 leaders of thousands
were men who met these character attributes. Rashi continues with 6,000 leaders
of hundreds, 12,000 leaders of 50 and 60,000 leaders of ten. This is about the
ratio of Torah Scholars today.
22 And
let them judge the people at all seasons; and it shall be, that every great
matter they shall bring unto thee, but every small matter they shall judge
themselves; so shall they make it easier for thee and bear the burden with
thee. 23 If thou shalt do this thing, and God command thee so, then
thou shalt be able to endure, and all this people also shall go to their place
in peace.'
Delegation of power is important for
all leaders. It might be that the US President sets the diplomatic design to
the Secretary of State and he in turn continues it and delegates it to various
Ambassadors and the same with the Secretary of Defense, Joint Chiefs of Staff,
Generals etc.
24 So
Moses hearkened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had
said.
He did so as he realized that it
was great advice in all fields.
25 And
Moses chose able men out of all Israel, and made them heads over the people,
rulers of thousands, rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of
tens.
26 And
they judged the people at all seasons: the hard causes they brought unto Moses,
but every small matter they judged themselves.
Moshe did this immediately without
wasting time.
27 And
Moses let his father-in-law depart; and he went his way into his own land.
And he set out on his way to his homeland - to convert the members of his family to Judaism. The
term Judaism did not exist them but more likely the religion and G-D of the
Hebrews.
19:1 In the third month after the children of
Israel were gone forth out of the land of Egypt, the same day came they into
the wilderness of Sinai. 2 And when they were departed from Rephidim,
and were come to the wilderness of Sinai, they encamped in the wilderness; and
there Israel encamped before the mount. 3 And Moses went up unto God,
and the LORD called unto him out of the mountain, saying: 'Thus shalt thou say
to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel: 4 Ye have
seen what I did unto the Egyptians, and how I bore you on eagles' wings, and
brought you unto Myself. 5 Now therefore, if ye will hearken unto My
voice indeed, and keep My covenant, then ye shall be Mine own treasure from
among all peoples; for all the earth is Mine; 6 and ye shall be unto
Me a kingdom of priests, and a holy nation. These are the words which thou
shalt speak unto the children of Israel.' 7 And Moses came and called
for the elders of the people, and set before them all these words which the
LORD commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said:
'All that the LORD hath spoken we will do.' And Moses reported the words of the
people unto the LORD. 9 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Lo, I come
unto thee in a thick cloud, that the people may hear when I speak with thee,
and may also believe thee forever.' And Moses told the words of the people unto
the LORD. 10 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Go unto the people, and
sanctify them to-day and to-morrow, and let them wash their garments, 11 and
be ready against the third day; for the third day the LORD will come down in
the sight of all the people upon mount Sinai. 12 And thou shalt set
bounds unto the people round about, saying: Take heed to yourselves, that ye go
not up into the mount, or touch the border of it; whosoever touches the mount
shall be surely put to death; 13 no hand shall touch him, but he
shall surely be stoned, or shot through; whether it be beast or man, it shall
not live; when the ram's horn sounds long, they shall come up to the
mount.' 14 And Moses went down from the mount unto the people, and
sanctified the people; and they washed their garments. 15 And he said
unto the people: 'Be ready against the third day; come not near a woman.' 16 And
it came to pass on the third day, when it was morning, that there were thunders
and lightnings and a thick cloud upon the mount, and the voice of a horn
exceeding loud; and all the people that were in the camp
trembled. 17 And Moses brought forth the people out of the camp to
meet God; and they stood at the nether part of the mount. 18 Now
mount Sinai was altogether on smoke, because the LORD descended upon it in
fire; and the smoke thereof ascended as the smoke of a furnace, and the whole
mount quaked greatly. 19 And when the voice of the horn waxed louder
and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by a voice. 20 And the
LORD came down upon mount Sinai, to the top of the mount; and the LORD called
Moses to the top of the mount; and Moses went up. 21 And the LORD
said unto Moses: 'Go down, charge the people, lest they break through unto the
LORD to gaze, and many of them perish. 22 And let the priests also,
that come near to the LORD, sanctify themselves, lest the LORD break forth upon
them.' 23 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'The people cannot come up to
mount Sinai; for thou didst charge us, saying: Set bounds about the mount, and
sanctify it.' 24 And the LORD said unto him: 'Go, get thee down, and
thou shalt come up, thou, and Aaron with thee; but let not the priests and the
people break through to come up unto the LORD, lest He break forth upon
them.' 25 So Moses went down unto the people, and told them. 20:1 And
God spoke all these words, saying: 2 I am the LORD thy God, who
brought thee out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. Thou shalt
have no other gods before Me.
You shall have ME as your L-RD G-D
and nothing else.
3 Thou
shalt not make unto thee a graven image, nor any manner of likeness, of anything
that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the
water under the earth; 4 thou shalt not bow down unto them, nor serve
them; for I the LORD thy God am a jealous God, visiting the iniquity of the
fathers upon the children unto the third and fourth generation of them that
hate Me; 5 and showing mercy unto the thousandth generation of them
that love Me and keep My commandments.
No images this means the calf on
the DIVINE CHARIOT they saw when the sea split in order that they would not make
a golden calf.
6 Thou
shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold
him guiltless that taketh His name in vain.
This applies to the Tetragrammaton
and our modern custom applies it to ELOKIM, etc. not using the lesser NAME but
putting in a K or other change so not to loosely say the various NAMES.
7 Remember
the sabbath day, to keep it holy.
8 Six
days shalt thou labor, and do all thy work;
Not regular things like force times distance that makes physical
work but one of the 39 Melachos. Like sowing, plowing, sewing, writing,
travelling distances, etc.
9 but
the seventh day is a sabbath unto the LORD thy God, in it thou shalt not do any
manner of work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, nor thy man-servant, nor thy
maid-servant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates;
Nobody in your family or vicinity
shall perform Melacha. Now a child up to a certain age making dirt or sand
castles or picking leaves does not understand digging, pruning, harvesting,
etc. But one over a certain age is capable of understanding and not doing these
things.
10 for
in six days the LORD made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is,
and rested on the seventh day; wherefore the LORD blessed the sabbath day, and
hallowed it.
Shabbos comes from the first week
of creation in where the L-RD, HIMSELF, rested and therefore we too must hallow
it.
11 Honor
thy father and thy mother, that thy days may be long upon the land which the
LORD thy God giveth thee.
This starts the second half of the
Decalogue where the commandments are between man and man. In case there was an
offended or even abused child, he was given these parents by G-D for a reason
and therefore they are to be honored for bringing him/her into the world and
raising the individual.
12 Thou
shalt not murder.
It does not say “kill” as a soldier
kills and so does a ritual slaughterer or the executioner for the rule of law.
Murder is just that like the terrorists, mafia and various rapes or robberies gone
wrong. Murder is forbidden in any form.
Thou
shalt not commit adultery.
It is a married female with any
other male outside of her husband. It is also a male with a married female.
However, the western form of cheating of a male with a non-married woman might
produce a case in civil court but under Halacha, until the Cherem of Rabbanu
Gershon one could have more than one wife.
Thou
shalt not steal.
This refers only to stealing a free
man for selling him or using him as a slave. The other forms of thievery
(sneaking and embezzling) or out right robbery by force are covered under two
separate negative Mitzvos.
Thou
shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbor.
This is something that can cause
great damage. Once somebody offered a friend to help him get divorced to
testify that he had relations with the wife. The damage to the poor women and
perhaps children might be irreparable.
13 Thou
shalt not covet thy neighbor's house;
This is a root of an evil eye. If a
friend wins the lottery, has a great wife and kids and you have a Yenta and
Brats that is his portion in this world and your portion in this world. Accept
what HASHEM has given you.
thou
shalt not covet thy neighbor's wife, nor his man-servant, nor his maid-servant,
nor his ox, nor his ass, nor anything that is thy neighbor's.
Jackass would be in function a
motor vehicle. It could be that all is well and good except he/she has a better
watch or even the smallest of items. Therefore, the Torah tells us anything.
14 And
all the people perceived the thunderings, and the lightnings, and the voice of
the horn, and the mountain smoking; and when the people saw it, they trembled, and stood afar off. 15 And they said unto
Moses: 'Speak thou with us, and we will hear; but let not God speak with us,
lest we die.'
The Aggadah in Talmud Shabbos Daf 88 A, B and further describes
how the first two the commandments, the souls would leave the body and come
back. After this, the people wanted only to receive the rest of the
Commandments from Moshe.
16 And
Moses said unto the people: 'Fear not; for God is come to prove you, and that
His fear may be before you, that ye sin not.' 17 And the people stood
afar off; but Moses drew near unto the thick darkness where God was.
So we received two commandments
directly. Moshe Commanded us the Torah. Torah in Gematria is 611 and add 2 and
you get 613 Mitzvos. We heard directly two and received from Moshe six and
eleven. Torah Tzva Lanu Moshe an inheritance of the children of Yacov.
18 And
the LORD said unto Moses: Thus thou shalt say unto the children of Israel: Ye
yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 19 Ye
shall not make with Me--gods of silver, or gods of gold, ye shall not make unto
you. 20 An altar of earth thou shalt make unto Me, and shalt
sacrifice thereon thy burnt-offerings, and thy peace-offerings, thy sheep, and
thine oxen; in every place where I cause My name to be mentioned I will come
unto thee and bless thee.
I do not need icons or idols, I am
everywhere. MY existence is in the vibration of every subatomic particle and
throughout the universe. Therefore you, being in MY Image upon mentioning MY
NAME shall be blessed.
21 And
if thou make Me an altar of stone, thou shalt not build it of hewn stones; for
if thou lift up thy tool upon it, thou hast profaned it.
Stones taken from the ground “as
is” shall my Mizbayach.
22 Neither
shalt thou go up by steps unto Mine altar, that thy nakedness be not uncovered
thereon.
The Cohanim had to wear pants under
their robes. A little different from our modern undergarments but covered their
private parts.
Sharing the Same Sins by Rabbi
Yerachmiel Tilles
https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5785/1416-18.html
It was the custom in Berditchev that the tefillin of
deceased townsmen would become the property of the local burial society,
whose gabbai would sell then for the benefit of the Chevrah
Kaddisha.
One day this functionary received a visit from Rabbi Levi Yitzchak, the
rabbinical judge of the town, who asked to be shown all the tefillin on hand,
for he wished to buy a pair for himself. The gabbai complied, whereupon the
tzadik soon chose a particular pair.
The gabbai gathered that he would not have come along to simply buy himself a
nondescript secondhand pair of tefillin, there must be more to this purchase
than met the eye. So he said: "Rebbe, I am willing to sell you all the
pairs of tefillin you see here - except for this pair. This pair I am not
willing to part with…"
But it was only this pair that the tzadik earnestly begged him to sell.
So finally the gabbai said: "Very well, I will agree to sell them to you,
but only on condition that you tell me what is so special about them that makes
you seek this particular pair."
"Very well," said the tzadik. "As you no doubt know,
for many years the brothers Reb Elimelech of Lizhinsk and Reb
Zusha of Anipoli wandered about among the townships and villages, with the
aim of making Baalei teshuva - filling people with the desire for repentance.
"Whenever they arrived at some place for the night, one of them would
address the other as if he were a sinner turning to his rebbe, weeping over his
imagined sins and requesting a suitable penance. And while so doing within
earshot of their host, he would list all the transgressions of which his host
was in fact guilty.
"Overhearing the seeming confession of another, the host would recall that
he 'too', as it were, had sinned in a like manner, and this recollection would
cause him to repent.
"Arriving one night at the house of a Jew who lived in a certain village,
Reb Zusha began tearfully begging his brother to prescribe a penance for him
for his negligence. Throughout his life, he had never had his tefillin checked
to see whether the verses inscribed on the parchment scrolls inside them were
still in valid condition. And now he had at last given his tefillin to a scribe
for checking, and had found that there were no scrolls inside them whatever! If
so, then he had lived all his life in an illusion, and clearly fell in the
category of 'a head that had never worn tefillin.'
"At this point, Reb Elimelech, the older brother, took over, and explained
to his brother what a serious state of affairs this was. And as their host
overheard this dialogue, he recalled that he 'too' had never given his tefillin
to a scribe for checking.
"He ran off to fetch them, and when they were opened, he found that they
were utterly empty! Alarmed by his discovery, he sobbed out his story to the
two visitors and begged them to direct him as to how to repent.
"Reb Elimelech now turned to Reb Zusha and said 'Please write out a set of
scrolls for the tefillin of our host. And as you do so, make it your solemn
intention to draw down into their words the kind of light from Above that will
be of the intensity appropriate to a man who has never fulfilled the mitzvah of
tefillin in his life.'
"Reb Zusha took out parchment, quill and ink, and devoutly inscribed the
passages required. Then he rolled up the tiny scrolls, placed them inside the
black leather boxes of the tefillin, and returned them to their owner.
"But the divine light that those tefillin now radiated was of an intensity
that this man was unable to bear. Soon after this incident he moved here to
Berditchev and a short while later, died in our city.
"And these," concluded Reb Levi Yitzchak, "are the selfsame
tefillin which thus found their way into the hands of our local burial
society."

Chasidic Tales' (Artscroll), the translation by R. Uri Kapoun of the
classic 'Sipurei Chasidim' by one of the most prominent Talmudic and halachic
authorities of the 20th Century, Rabbi Shlomo-Yosef Zevin.
Why this week? The second day of the Jewish month of Shvat (2025: Friday, Jan. 31)
is the yahrzeit of Rebbe Zusha.
Biographic notes (3 - in order of appearance):
Rabbi Levi Yitzchak of Berditchev (1740 - 25 Tishrei 1810) is one of the
most popular Rebbes in Chassidic history. He was a close disciple of the Maggid
of Mezritch. He is best known for his love for every Jew and his active efforts
to intercede for them against (seemingly) adverse heavenly decrees. Many of his
teachings are contained in the posthumously published Kedushas Levi.
Rabbi Elimelech of Lizhinsk (1717 - 21 Adar A, 1787), was a major disciple
of the Maggid of Mezritch, successor to the Baal Shem Tov,
and the leading Rebbe of the subsequent generation in Poland-Galitzia. Many of
the great Chassidic dynasties stem from his disciples. His book, Noam
Elimelech, is one of the most popular of all Chassidic works.
Rabbi Zusha of Anapoli (1718 - 2 Shvat 1800), was a major disciple of
the Magid of Mezritch, successor to the Baal Shem Tov.
The seemingly unsophisticated but clearly inspired "R. Zusha" is one
of the best known and most beloved Chassidic personalities. He and his famous
brother, R.be Elimelech of Lizensk, spent many years wandering in exile, for
esoteric reasons.
The Eavesdropper in
the Rebbe’s Room by R’ Y. Tilles
https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5785/1417-19.html
These were the days of the
Communist Revolution in Russia. After World War 1, Rabbi Simcha
Gorodetsky was then a student in Chabad's Tomchei Temimim yeshiva,
which itself had gone through difficult upheavals. When Simcha became weak and
fell seriously ill, the yeshiva's supervisor, Rabbi Yechezkel Feigin, took him
to one of the most renowned doctors for an examination.
The professor left the room after
completing his examination of the yeshiva student. He turned to the rabbi who
was waiting outside and quietly remarked, "The young man is fading. His
heart is weakening; his lungs are deteriorating. I don't see any chance to save
his life."
"What did the doctor
say?" Simcha asked Rabbi Feigin anxiously.
"You need to rest," the
supervisor replied curtly. "Go home until you recover."
"Absolutely not,"
Simcha responded firmly. "I will go to the Rebbe."
When Rabbi Feigin saw he could
not dissuade the young man, he accompanied him to see the Rebbe
Rayatz (Rabbi Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn, the sixth Lubavitcher
Rebbe), who was then residing in Rostov.[1] The supervisor entered first
to brief the Rebbe on the gravity of Simcha's condition. Then Simcha was
allowed in.
"According to the
supervisor," the Rebbe told him, "you must not stay in yeshiva any
longer." Simcha stood breathless, unable to respond. "But I
say," the Rebbe continued, "that this is not so. You will continue to
be a student in the yeshiva, and you will also serve as my emissary for various
missions. I promise that you will be healthy and live a long life."
The Rebbe tasked young Gorodetsky
with traveling across Russian cities to gather information about Jewish life
there. As Simcha embarked on his mission, the weakness that had overtaken him
disappeared, and he grew stronger with each passing day. Periodically, he would
set out on his travels and, upon his return, would personally deliver detailed
reports to the Rebbe.
* * *
One day, Simcha was standing in
the Rebbe Rayatz's office, not yet finished with his report to the Rebbe on his
latest journey. The gabbai (attendant) knocked on the door,
announcing that the time had come for yechidus (private
audiences). Simcha started to leave the room, but the Rebbe surprised him by
gesturing for him to stay. Simcha was astonished, but moved to the corner of
the room, trying to be inconspicuous, standing there in awe so as not to
disturb the proceedings.
The first person to enter was an
elderly man with a beard. His meeting with the Rebbe was very brief. Upon
entering, he asked, "Rebbe, did I understand the sign correctly?"
The Rebbe nodded affirmatively
and said, "Yes, yes, yes!"
Next came a second individual,
who burst into tears, crying, "Rebbe, it's me!" before fainting.
The gabbai quickly revived him,
and the man left the room.
The third visitor was an older
man who did not seem to be a Chassid. He handed the Rebbe a letter containing
several questions, holding a copy of it himself. He went through the questions
one by one with the Rebbe, receiving an answer for each. However, to the last
question, the Rebbe gave no response.
The man pointed out that there
was one more question in the letter. "I am not blind," the Rebbe
replied.
When the man tried again, the
Rebbe said, "I am not deaf."
When he persisted, the Rebbe
signaled that the yechidus had ended.
* * *
Simcha left the Rebbe's office amazed. In the study hall, he saw the first man
and asked, "Perhaps you could tell me what was behind your question?"
"Gladly," the man
replied, and began his story:
"Many years ago, the Rebbe
Rashab (Rabbi Sholom Ber Schneersohn, father of the Rebbe Rayatz) sent
me to Siberia to strengthen Jewish observance there. I asked when I would know
that my mission was complete, and the Rebbe replied that when the time came, I
would receive a sign.
"Years passed. I fulfilled
the Rebbe's directive, opening a shul, establishing a school for children,
building a mikveh and in general, strengthening the local Jewish community. My
greatest success was with one Jew who had been distant from Torah and mitzvot
but became a full-fledged baal teshuva.
"In 1920, after the Rebbe
Rashab passed away, I wondered if it was time for me to return. I wrote to his
son, our Rebbe, and soon received a reply. To my amazement, the Rebbe wrote,
'It seems to me that my father said you would receive a sign when the time
comes.' I was astonished-how did he know? I had never told him!
"Not long ago, I received
another letter from the Rebbe. I opened it with great excitement and began
reading aloud the Rebbe's words. At that moment, my baal teshuva was in my
room. In the letter, the Rebbe requested that I assist in locating a man who had
abandoned his wife, leaving her an agunah. Suddenly, I noticed that
my companion turned pale as a ghost. It dawned on me-he was the man!
"We decided to travel
together to see the Rebbe. I asked him if this was the sign I had been waiting
for. The Rebbe confirmed it. My companion then entered the room and confessed,
'It's me!'"
* * *
Years later, Rabbi Simcha
Gorodetsky encountered the third visitor. "Do you remember your meeting
with the Rebbe?" Rabbi Gorodetsky asked.
The man's eyes lit up. "Of course!" he replied. "As you may
recall, the Rebbe refused to answer my final question. At that time, I was
considering a second marriage. That was my last question, and it was very
important to me, but the Rebbe avoided answering it. I left confused.
"However,
shortly thereafter, I learned that the woman in question had fallen ill and
passed away. It was then that I understood the Rebbe's silence."

based on a report to them from Rabbi Michil Vishetzky of Kfar Chabad, who heard
it from Rabbi Gorodetsky of the story.
Why
this week? This
Shabbat, the tenth day of the Jewish month of Shvat, is the 75th yahrzeit of
the Rebbe Rayatz.
Biographic
notes (in
order of appearance):
Rabbi Simcha Gorodetsky [27 Menachem-Av 5663 - 30 Tishrei 5744 (Aug. 1903
- Oct. 1983)] was an emissary of the Rebbe Rayatz to the city of Samarkan and
the entire Central Asian region of the Soviet Union. He was arrested several
times for his efforts to strengthen Judaism. In 1964, he emigrated to the Holy
Land. Settling in Kfar Chabad, he served as a spiritual guide and mentor at an
immigrant absorption center there, and in the 1970's he was among the founders
of the Bukharian Yeshiva in Kfar Chabad. He passed away at the age of eighty,
one day after returning from being with the Lubavitcher Rebbe in Brooklyn for
the 'Month of Holidays.' [Excerpted and translated from
https://chabadpedia.co.il]
Rabbi
Yosef Yitzchak Schneersohn [12 Tammuz 5640 - 10 Shvat 5710 (June 1880-Jan.
1950], known as the Rebbe Rayatz, was the 6th Lubavitcher Rebbe,
from 1920 to 1950. He established a network of Jewish educational institutions
and Chassidim that was the single most significant factor for the preservation
of Judaism during the dread reign of the communist Soviets. In 1940 he moved to
the USA, established Chabad world-wide headquarters in Brooklyn and launched
the global campaign to renew and spread Judaism in all languages and in every
corner of the world, the campaign continued and expanded so remarkably
successfully by his son-in-law and successor, Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson.
Rabbi
Sholom-Dov Ber Schneersohn [20 Cheshvan 5621 - 2 Nissan 5680 (Oct. 1860 -
April 1920)], known as the Rebbe Rashab, was the fifth Rebbe of the
Lubavitcher dynasty. He is the author of hundreds of major tracts in the
exposition of Chasidic thought. In 1915, after 102 years of four Chabad Rebbes
living in Lubavitch, he transferred the center of the movement to
Rostov-On-the-Don.

Wounded on Oct. 15th
in the North of the North
Sgt. First Class Saar Horowitz
lives with his family just a wee bit north of Kibbutz Netiv HaAsera. He was
called up on Oct. 7th. On Oct. 15th he parked his tank in
an area that he thought was safe from the view of Hezballah somewhere between
Rosh Hanikra and close to Kibbutz Hannita.
The fellows were about to doze
off or dozing off when their Tank was hit by an RPG. Smoke everywhere chocking
them. Saar goes to open the latch for air and can’t move his three fingers for
the job.
With the help of others within
they get out of the tank. As they get out calls go out for a paramedic. Saar is
injured badly in his elbow by shrapnel. Up until the others yelled for a medic
and said, that he was injured, Saar did not feel pain. Then it hit him like a
ton of bricks.
It took a lot of operations and
months to recover.
Sgt. Elad Astukar wound
in Gaza then Lebanon bounces back
Elad refused to leave the front in
Gaza and went for a field hospital operation. He soon returned to battle with
his men. In Lebanon towards the last day of his deployment he was badly wounded
including in the eye and this time he needed hospitalization. That is not
stopping him. He is like the unsinkable Molly Brown rowing the lifeboat and
singing after the Titanic went down. This is another one of our heroes. Of
course over 800 heroes did not make it many fell fighting like lions on Oct. 7th
against all odds.
Avner Haverfeld was not
badly wounded until.
Avner was being evacuated. He was
not wounded badly and most likely he would return to the fray after a short
time. But then an RPG hit is evacuation vehicle. His left arm was gone in an
instant and he looked for his tourniquet to stop the bleeding but he couldn’t
do it without somebody else who was there. Now he was wounded seriously and
evacuated by helicopter.
… he learned to tie his shoelaces
with a prothesis limb. He now has climbed a mountain with one good hand and
plans to lead wounded warriors on similar or the same climbing experience. WE
SHALL OVER COME.
The story of General
Yitzchak Shomer fighting Hamas with a knife.
For about
three hours, he fought back against Hamas gunmen with just the knife until he
picked up a weapon from a wounded member of the local security squad, he said.
For hours, he fired at terrorists he encountered inside the kibbutz, carefully
preserving his ammo, estimating that he killed around 20 invaders. …
“I only
realized it then, when we got there, how close it was,” he added. “What a
miracle.”

At
40, Franz Kafka (1883-1924), who never married and had no children, was walking
through a park one day in Berlin when he met a girl who was crying because she
had lost her favorite doll. She and Kafka searched for the doll unsuccessfully.
Kafka
told her to meet him there the next day and they would come back to look for
her.
The
next day, when they had not yet found the doll, Kafka gave the girl a letter
"written" by the doll saying "please don't cry. I took a trip to
see the world. I will write to you about my adventures."
Thus
began a story which continued until the end of Kafka's life.
During
their meetings, Kafka read the letters of the doll carefully written with
adventures and conversations that the girl found adorable.
Finally,
Kafka brought back the doll (he bought one) that had returned to Berlin.
"It
doesn't look like my doll at all," said the girl.
Kafka
handed her another letter in which the doll wrote: "my travels have
changed me." The little girl hugged the new doll and brought the doll with
her to her happy home.
A
year later Kafka died.
Many
years later, the now-adult girl found a letter inside the doll. In the tiny
letter signed by Kafka it was written: "Everything you love will probably
be lost, but in the end, love will return in another way."
Embrace
change. It's inevitable for growth. Together we can shift pain into wonder and
love, but it is up to us to consciously and intentionally create that
connection. Thanks to a fwd. post by Ayelet.
