This week for the first time since
I stared writing my Drasha and Stories, I managed to erase all my data for
Devarim. I recovered the first three Parshiyos but missed out on a lot of work.
My Milestone section with four Jews was lost. Joe Caroff, 105, I remembered. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joe_Caroff
The most important one was Rabbi
Beryl Wein Ztzal, 91, one of the famous students of Rabbi Chaim Kreisworth
Ztzal. His fellow students were Rabbi Lehrfeld Ztzal, Rabbi Arieh Rothman Ztzal
(one of my guides). His uncle Rabbi Tuvia Wein, Ztzal was a student of the
Gadol Chafetz Chaim Ztzal and wrote books on the Targum and taught me a few
sections of the Tanach.
Rabbi Shlomo Mimran Shlita used to
listen to his slow but methodical history shiurim on the 12 minor prophets. I
was fortunate enough to read of lot of his material on the Parsha and hear a
few lectures of his.
From Sivan Rachav Meir: Rabbi Beryl WEIN died on Saturday, aged 91. He
sells more abroad than in Israel. Head of the Yeshiva, educator, author,
historian, who has done Aliyah and education over many years. Here's a
fabricated story about him, that can affect us also:
"I
was a young American boy in 1946 when my father woke me up early and said: 'We
are going to the airport, Rabbi Herzog is coming to Chicago! '. The whole city
was waiting for the most important and famous Rabbi.
Rabbi
Herzog also came to our school, and said this: 'I've now returned from the Pope
in Rome. I submitted to him a list of thousands of Jewish children who were put
into Catholic monasteries by their parents during the Holocaust, just to save
them from the Germans. I said to the Pope: I give you the list as the
representative of the Jewish people, and I ask that you give us back the
children. But the pope did not agree. He explained that everyone who enters a
Catholic institution has already been baptized into Christianity, and needs to
remain a Christian forever.'
I
remember as a child, how Rabbi Herzog finished quoting the pope, paused for a
moment, and then started crying. I have never seen someone sob like this. He
bowed his head on the podium, and all the last two thousands of years of Jewish
history simply poured out of him. The entire Jewish-American audience stood
amazed.
Then
Rabbi Herzog looked at us and said: I can't do anything more for these
children. But you, what do you intend to do for the Jewish people? What do you
intend to do to restore our nation?
After
finishing, we approached to shake his hand. He repeated the message to each of
us in person, then he looked at me, still a child, and said: Did you hear what
I said? Don't forget what i said.
This
has changed my life. It has changed the lives of many who have been there. From
this group came out many who founded educational institutions and large Jewish
organizations, and many also went to Israel. Throughout the years, the young
Americans who were there in the hall educated many people to be an active part
of the Jewish nation. All because of one speech, because of one cry".
Kira S. wrote: Rabbi
Berel Wein has been in my life since the first time I went to Monsey for
Shabbat to meet Yossi's family, 37 years ago.
Yossi had gone to Yeshiva Shaarei Torah, and when R' Wein spoke
about R' Yaakov Kamenetzky's advice "keep an eye on the troublemakers,
they're the ones that make a difference in this world", Yossi was a prime
beneficiary of that approach!
Whenever we needed advice that came from a deep sense of what is
right and good in the eyes of Hashem, it was Rabbi Wein that we turned to. From
the time that we struggled with arranging to get married while in college (our
families were not thrilled to say the least, R' Wein had faith that we would
work it out), through tricky situations just a few short months ago, he cut
through all the noise and pointed us the right way.
We shared our accomplishments and our Simchas with him; we have
hand-written notes of blessing for our children's Bar/Bat Mitzvahs, and when
Yossi got his Semicha, we sent Rabbi Wein a picture of his certificate. He
shepped nachas from his Talmidim
When I started to write my book on the Haftorahs, I printed out
the first draft of my first chapter, which was way too long and unfocused, and
sent it to him by mail. I got back a hand-written letter of encouragement,
telling me to carry on, how important it can be. For years later, whenever any
member of our extended family contacted him, he asked, "Kira, where's the
book?" When I actually started writing the chapters, one week at a time,
and emailing them to a select group of family and friends, he was on that list,
and wrote back with even more encouragement. He tried to introduce me to his
publisher (who didn't think it was a good investment, oh well), and then, when
a publisher contacted us, it was only because Yossi said, "Rabbi Wein
would write a foreword" that they took me seriously. The foreword was in
my inbox 3 days later, and it only took me 3 years (!!!) to complete the book .
It would not have happened without him.
And then he arranged for me to do a lecture & book signing
in his own shul in Jerusalem, in his presence, where HE introduced ME!
Yossi and I went to his 90s birthday celebration last year, and
sadly, today we dropped everything, and went to his funeral in that same shul
in Jerusalem, to say good bye, and to say thank you. On the way home, Yossi
tore kriya, on the left side, over his heart, as one might do for the person
who taught you the most Torah, and wore that shirt all day on top of his "Super
Daddy" t-shirt while playing with the grandchildren in Camp Super Daddy....
So what have I learned from this remarkable person, from his
books and lectures, and in person?
1) The Torah is talking to us. The Tanach is talking to us. Not
to some people a very long time ago, but to us. (If you've heard me speak,
you'll recognize that this is a lesson that I attribute to my mother, and
that's also true. Both of them could teach the same lesson, and did.)
2) Jewish History is primarily a story of individuals. It was
true in the beginning, with Avraham Avinu, but is still true now. Herzl was an
individual, R' Yisrael Salanter, R' Herzog, the Satmar Ruv. This gives me hope
because Mendel Ratta is an individual and so is R' Dovid Leibel. And so was R'
Berel Wein.
3) "The Lord" as R' Wein used to call Him, is deeply
involved in Jewish History. אתה הוראת לדעת כי ה' הוא
האלוקים אין עוד מלבדו is said in context of Him intervening in
history and empires.
4) Pretending that life was idyllic at any time in Jewish history
is wrong, silly, counterproductive and intellectually dishonest.
5) From his book, "The Legacy": "frum is a
gallach, a yid is ehrlich" (straight, honest). Not so easy to be ehrlich,
but we will continue to try as he taught us - ignore the noise and listen to
"the Lord"
There's more, of course, and I highly recommend listening to any
and all of his thousands of lectures: JewishHistoryDotOrg -

Berel Wein, Jewish historian and author, passes away | Israel National News
In short, if I had not written
this, I would have done a great disservice to Am Yisrael for not posting of the
loss of one of the great leaders and influencers of American Jewry and the
English Speaking Community.
Parsha Re’eh Part 1
The first lecture of Moshe in his
final weeks ended with Parsha Eikev. We now continue the second lecture that
contains about 170 Mitzvos from Devarim 11:26 through 29:8. We get a bit lost
in the Mitzvos and forget how the lecture started with the blessing and the
curse until close to the end.
11:26
Behold, I set before you this day a blessing and a curse: 27 the
blessing, if ye shall hearken unto the commandments of the LORD your God, which
I command you this day; 28 and the curse, if ye shall not
hearken unto the commandments of the LORD your God, but turn aside out of the
way which I command you this day, to go after other gods, which ye have not
known.
The lecture is in one day. It
perhaps was like a Farbrengen (in German it would start VER and it means get
together) of the Lubavitcher Rebbe. Moshe would speak and translators would
shout repeating the words like microphone. It would take time to reach all two
million of more Bnei Yisrael. We will only read of the Blessing on Har Gerizim
and the Curses on Har Eval in Parsha Ki Savo, but it was the same day a few
hours later. Their hunger and thirst that day was not for food and water with
perhaps the exception of young children, but for the words of Torah. It was no
military or State Secret that Moshe was soon to be gathered unto his people.
29 And it shall come to pass, when the LORD thy God shall bring
thee into the land whither thou go to possess it, that thou shalt set the
blessing upon mount Gerizim, and the curse upon mount Ebal.
These mountains were known to them
by the oral tradition of Yacov in Schem and the stories from Sefer Yashar. (The
book contains the traditions of the battles of the Bnei Canaan vs. the Bnei
Yacov after Schem and the people were killed off by Shimon and Levi. Miraculous
escapes and how Canaan killed each other in what we call today a “friendly fire”
incident but with swords, spears and arrows in the fog on the mountain.)
30
Are they not beyond the Jordan, behind the way of the going down of the sun, in
the land of the Canaanites that dwell in the Arabah, over against Gilgal,
beside the terebinths of Moreh?
Just to the west of us where the
sun sets.
31
For ye are to pass over the Jordan to go in to possess the land which the LORD
your God giveth you, and ye shall possess it, and dwell therein. 32
And ye shall observe to do all the statutes and the ordinances which I set
before you this day.
We have just received two warnings
– against idolatry and for observance of Mitzvos.
12:1 These are the statutes and the
ordinances, which ye shall observe to do in the land which the LORD, the God of
thy fathers, hath given thee to possess it, all the days that ye live upon the
earth. 2 Ye shall surely destroy all the places, wherein the
nations that ye are to dispossess served their gods, upon the high mountains,
and upon the hills, and under every leafy tree. 3 And ye shall
break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and burn their
Asherim with fire; and ye shall hew down the graven images of their gods; and
ye shall destroy their name out of that place. 4 Ye shall not do
so unto the LORD your God.
You shall possess the land, and
conquer it. You shall remove all idols and lone trees on tops of mountains or
in deserts that were worshipped (Asherim). In modern Israel, we cannot remove
the Statue of a Jew murdered by the Romans attached to a church in Abu Gosh. It
used to be the main road to Yerushalayim from the coast until Highway 1 was
built. On the other hand, it is not an idol that is sacrificed to as in ancient
times and no special powers is believed that the statue has powers by the church
goers are given to it. For a Jew it is strange worship but not an idol.
5
But unto the place which the LORD your God shall choose out of all your tribes
to put His name there, even unto His habitation shall ye seek, and thither thou
shalt come; 6 and thither ye shall bring your burnt-offerings,
and your sacrifices, and your tithes, and the offering of your hand, and your
vows, and your freewill-offerings, and the firstlings of your herd and of your
flock; 7 and there ye shall eat before the LORD your God, and ye
shall rejoice in all that ye put your hand unto, ye and your households,
wherein the LORD thy God hath blessed thee.
This will be Shilo until the first
Mikdash in Yerushalayim.
8 Ye
shall not do after all that we do here this day, every man whatsoever is right
in his own eyes; 9 for ye are not as yet come to the rest and to
the inheritance, which the LORD your God giveth thee. 10 But
when ye go over the Jordan, and dwell in the land which the LORD your God causes
you to inherit, and He gives you rest from all your enemies round about, so
that ye dwell in safety;
Once the inheritance and boundaries
are set between families and tribes and the laws are established in the land.
11
then it shall come to pass that the place which the LORD your God shall choose
to cause His name to dwell there, thither shall ye bring all that I command
you: your burnt-offerings, and your sacrifices, your tithes, and the offering
of your hand, and all your choice vows which ye vow unto the LORD. 12
And ye shall rejoice before the LORD your God, ye, and your sons, and your
daughters, and your men-servants, and your maid-servants, and the Levite that
is within your gates, forasmuch as he hath no portion nor inheritance with you.
You shall go up to the central
place in your day of the Mishkan or Mikdash (Tabernacle or Temple) and bring
your tithes to the Levi and the second tithe that is eaten only in the
Mishkan-Mikdash. (Not mentioned here is the Teruma for the Cohain).
13
Take heed to thyself that thou offer not thy burnt-offerings in every place
that thou see; 14 but in the place which the LORD shall choose
in one of thy tribes, there thou shalt offer thy burnt-offerings, and there thou
shalt do all that I command thee. 15 Notwithstanding thou mayest
kill and eat flesh within all thy gates, after all the desire of thy soul,
according to the blessing of the LORD thy God which He hath given thee; the
unclean and the clean may eat thereof, as of the gazelle, and as of the hart.
One no longer will need to go and
slaughter before the tent of meeting, but can slaughter anywhere non-sacrifices
but only Kosher (clean) animals and birds.
16
Only ye shall not eat the blood; thou shalt pour it out upon the earth as
water.
Regarding birds and
non-domesticated animals, one must pour the blood on the earth and cover it up
or have dust ready if slaughtered on Yom Tov.
17
Thou mayest not eat within thy gates the tithe of thy corn, or of thy wine, or
of thine oil, or the firstlings of thy herd or of thy flock, nor any of thy
vows which thou vow, nor thy freewill-offerings, nor the offering of thy hand; 18 but thou shalt eat them before the LORD thy God in the place
which the LORD thy God shall choose, thou, and thy son, and thy daughter, and
thy man-servant, and thy maid-servant, and the Levite that is within thy gates;
and thou shalt rejoice before the LORD thy God in all that thou put thy hand
unto. 19 Take heed to thyself that thou forsake not the Levite
as long as thou live upon thy land.
The first tithe, Maaser, is 10%
given to the Levi and the second tithe is a small percent 2 to 3% to be eaten
in holiness three times a year.
20 When the LORD thy God shall enlarge thy border, as He hath
promised thee, and thou shalt say: 'I will eat flesh', because thy soul desires
to eat flesh; thou mayest eat flesh, after all the desire of thy soul. 21 If the place which the LORD thy God shall choose to put His name
there be too far from thee, then thou shalt kill of thy herd and of thy flock,
which the LORD hath given thee, as I have commanded thee, and thou shalt eat
within thy gates, after all the desire of thy soul.
The King James and the version that
I use have “kill” but the meaning is ritually slaughter in the correct place,
cut and with a perfectly sharp instrument that has no jagged or rough edges
that could pull the flesh, veins or arteries of the animal or bird to be slaughtered.
22
Howbeit as the gazelle and as the hart is eaten, so thou shalt eat thereof; the
unclean and the clean may eat thereof alike. 23 Only be steadfast
in not eating the blood; for the blood is the life; and thou shalt not eat the
life with the flesh.
The Muslims are now reusing the
blood libel about backing matzos with the blood of dead children. Jews do not
eat or drink blood at all. On the other hand, when the PLO killed the Prime
Minister of Jordan in September 1970, the killer bent down and drank human
blood of his victim. Non-Jews love Juicy Meat that is often dripping with
blood. The koshering process removes most blood of the animal or bird slaughtered.
Only fish blood does not have this law. It is considered fluid.
24
Thou shalt not eat it; thou shalt pour it out upon the earth as water. 25 Thou shalt not eat it; that it may go well with thee, and with
thy children after thee, when thou shalt do that which is right in the eyes of
the LORD.
All wild animals and fowls require
the covering of the blood poured on the ground with dust or sawdust.
26
Only thy holy things which thou hast, and thy vows, thou shalt take, and go
unto the place which the LORD shall choose; 27 and thou shalt offer thy
burnt-offerings, the flesh and the blood, upon the altar of the LORD thy God;
and the blood of thy sacrifices shall be poured out against the altar of the
LORD thy God, and thou shalt eat the flesh. 28 Observe and hear all these words
which I command thee, that it may go well with thee, and with thy children
after thee forever, when thou do that which is good and right in the eyes of
the LORD thy God.
The Torah does not mince words so
the caution here is extra so that one will not be cut off as the next line
indicates.
29
When the LORD thy God shall cut off the nations from before thee, whither thou
go in to dispossess them, and thou dispossess them, and dwellest in their land;
30 take heed to thyself that thou be not ensnared to follow them, after that
they are destroyed from before thee; and that thou inquire not after their
gods, saying: 'How used these nations to serve their gods? even so will I do
likewise.' 31 Thou shalt not do so unto the LORD thy God; for every abomination
to the LORD, which He hates, have they done unto their gods; for even their
sons and their daughters do they burn in the fire to their gods. 13:1 All this
word which I command you, that shall ye observe to do; thou shalt not add
thereto, nor diminish from it.
Behave yourself to do what G-D
loves and avoid anything that will anger HIM. The Torah is not written for your
editing and so do not add or subtract anything. For this reason if one comes to
us and wants to convert but says I can observe 612 Mitzvos but I am Homosexual
or I can observe all Mitzvos except my profession is a hired killer by the
Mafia, we say “Sorry but you can’t” for with G-D it is all or nothing.
Creative Compassion by R’ Yerachmiel Tilles
https://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1445-47
A man named Chaim
lived in Montreal, Canada. Chaim was facing great financial difficulty, and
after much consideration, in 1995 he decided to move to an unknown part of
Canada, where he thought opportunities would be better financially for him and
his family. When the Tosher Rebbe, Rabbi Meshulam Feivish Segal-Lowy,
heard about his acquaintance Chaim's intentions, he tried and understand his
reasons for making such a drastic decision.
The Tosher Rebbe,
who was known for his great compassion toward his fellow Jews, inquired about
basic Jewish resources in this new location, such as a reliable minyan,
a mikvah, and a cheder (Torah school for children). Regrettably,
Chaim admitted that these essential aspects of Jewish life were not going to be
available in his new town.
The Rebbe was
bothered by this, and he tried to ascertain what he felt was the deeper reason
Chaim had that was motivating his life-changing decision. With honesty and
openness, Chaim confessed to the Rebbe about a heart-breaking incident that had
destroyed his faith and trust in G-D and significantly affected his
circumstances in life.
During a business
trip to Antwerp, he was traveling with a substantial amount of money to close a
cash deal already agreed upon that would yield him a hefty profit. Tragically,
however, it never came to be; his money stash 'disappeared' at the airport. He
searched everywhere but the pouch was nowhere to be found. Clearly, it had been
stolen somehow, and it left him poverty-stricken. Overwhelmed by despair, he
returned to Montreal burdened by the weight of his financial troubles.
The Tosher Rebbe was
moved by Chaim's story, yet still continued his efforts to persuade Chaim from
leaving. He also offered to assist him with his financial struggles, but Chaim
was determined to relocate and start again, no matter what the Rebbe said or
offered. Reluctantly, the Rebbe stood back as Chaim prepared to depart.
The next day, a
stranger approached Chaim in the street. For some reason, this stranger seemed
somewhat familiar, and Chaim said to him, "Do I know you from somewhere?
You look familiar."
Chaim's heart
fluttered when the stranger responded. "I have carried a burden of guilt
ever since that day at the airport," the stranger confessed. Chaim was
shocked. The man continued, "I couldn't live in peace knowing that I had
taken your money. It has bothered me every day since then. Here, please accept
it back." And with that, the stranger handed Chaim the exact sum of money
that had been stolen years earlier!
Chaim was
overwhelmed by disbelief and gratitude, and it made a profound impact on him.
He abandoned his plan to move away, and Montreal once again became his home
where he and his family continued to grow and thrive.
Twenty years later,
the sad news spread that the Tosher Rebbe had passed away. At the funeral, as
the people gathered around the Rebbe's gravesite, Chaim saw the stranger once
again. Chaim remarked, "I suppose this is our third time meeting."
However, the
stranger smilingly corrected him and said, "No, it's not our third; it is
only our second encounter! The truth is that although I told you I stole your
money, I actually did not take it. The Tosher Rebbe felt terrible that you were
ready to abandon living a Jewish lifestyle, and in his holiness, he gave me
this money and asked me to return it to you, in a manner as if I was the one
who stole it."
Tears flowed from Chaim's
eyes as he realized the depth of the Tosher Rebbe's wisdom, and his
extraordinary act of love!

Pinchas 5784 email of Torah U' Tefilla, as posted
on ShabbosStories.com.
Why this week: Thursday, the 27th of Menachem-Av (2025: Aug. 21) is
the 10th yahrzeit of the Tosher Rebbe.
Biographic note:
Rabbi Meshulam-Feivish HaLevi Segal-Lowy, the fourth Tosher Rebbe, born in
Hungary [3 Nissan 5681 - 27 Menachem-Av (April 1921 -August 2015)], was a
Holocaust survivor who had served in the Hungarian Labor Service before being
liberated by the Red Army in 1944. Already known for his aura of holiness and
magnetic personality, the Rebbe was proclaimed the new Tosher Rebbe by his
father's surviving Chassidim after the war. He is reputed to be able to trace
his patrilineal ancestry all the way back to Rashi.
The Tosher was famous throughout the world for the salvations and miracles that
followed upon his blessings, and for his infinite compassion towards his fellow
Jews. His guidance was sought by thousands, particularly by Holocaust
survivors. Today there are Tosh communities and Tosh institutions in many
cities throughout the Jewish world. (Based on a eulogy in the Jewish Press,
Aug. 13, 2015)
Testimonial: Excerpted from Rabbi Yisroel Besser's introduction to his 328-page
biography, "The Tosher Rebbe" (Artscroll):
The Tosher Rebbe was known as a person whose blessings could work
miracles. But his greatest miracle was not the flow of salvation that came from
his room, it was the constant miracle of the way he was ready to give all of
himself for a Jew in need.
For the next fifty years [after his founding Kiriat Tosh], the Tosher Rebbe
would stand as a pillar of prayer, a fountain of inspiration and encouragement
for his Talmidim and chassidim and to Jews all over the
globe. He conducted a global network of chesed, raising millions of
dollars for those in need.
The Tosher Rebbe spawned healing and hope, but most of all, in his proximity,
the people felt the reality of HaKadosh Baruch Hu's presence. The stream
of visitors - at times, hundreds in a single day- could sense the Divine
current that hovered over the small room as they gazed at the holy glow that
radiated from the Rebbe's face and heard the cry of faith that laced his every
word. They would come into the room weighed down by heartache and leave with
spirits restored, touched by the tzaddik's delight, enthused by his
blessing, uplifted by the clarity of his Emunah.
In this book the reader can feel the intensity, the passion, the perfect joy
one felt near the Rebbe, the tzaddik of Tosh: in this book,
the Ahavas Yisroel, the sacrifice, the Torah and tefillah of the
Rebbe come alive once again, a ray of light showing us the way forward.

off sirens in several areas of central Israel and Jerusalem. The IDF stated
that aerial defense systems were operating to intercept the threat and asked
the public "to follow the Home Front Command’s defensive guidelines."

Shachidim: A cell of at least 14-20
terror operatives attempted to raid an IDF encampment in southern Gaza’s Khan
Younis this morning, according to a military probe of the rare incident.
The
attack began at around 9 a.m., as the operatives emerged from a tunnel near the
IDF post and began to fire RPGs and machine guns at troops of the Kfir
Brigade’s Haruv reconnaissance unit, and approached the encampment.
The
soldiers exchanged fire, killing at least eight of the gunmen just outside the
army post, while others likely managed to flee back to the tunnel, the probe
finds.
The
troops also dispatched a drone to strike the operatives, though it is unclear
how many were killed from the air.
The
IDF is continuing to scan the area for the gunmen, who the military assesses
had sought to kidnap troops.
The
IDF has not officially commented on the incident, including possible
casualties.
The
incident marks a rare case of a relatively large cell of operatives attempting
to attack an IDF post. Last month, a cell of at least 12 gunmen tried to attack
an IDF logistics road in Khan Younis.

few ‘upgrades’ occurred on the internet. The first was Firefox that no longer

upgraded word and their browser. As a result something happened that all of

“Milestones” on four Jews and only remembered two. (See Rabbi Beryl Wein in my
