Parsha Toldos

With the Shidduch of Yitzchak and the passing of Avraham our Gadol HaDor is now Yitzchak. The Parsha starts more than 15 years before the passing of Avraham. He will see his grandchildren grow until the age of 15. The Medrash says that he should have lived until 180 like Yitzchak but because Esav was about to sin, his life was cut short. Hence the eating of the red lentils on the day Esav sinned.

Rivka who is more around the household and watches the children’s personality develop sees who is the real Tzaddik and who was the one in her womb that wanted to leave for the house of idolatry. She learns that because of both his physical and spiritual blindness towards Esav that he plans to bless him instead of the Yacov, HaTzaddik, and the blessing of Avraham will go to the wicked instead of the righteous. She contrives of a way to have Yacov blessed instead and the religious leadership passed on to the deserving son.

Esav will not stand for this trickery and vows with his hatred to murder Yacov. Rivka sends him away extensively for finding a wife so that Yitzchak will not know of Esav’s fratricide plot. From this I will take a few points to discuss this week. (No Rashi this week so that I cut down on the length but add some thoughts of mine.)

25:19 And these are the generations of Isaac, Abraham's son: Abraham begot Isaac. 20 And Isaac was forty years old when he took Rebekah, the daughter of Bethuel the Aramean, of Paddan-aram, the sister of Laban the Aramean, to be his wife. 21 And Isaac entreated the LORD for his wife, because she was barren; and the LORD let Himself be entreated of him, and Rebekah his wife conceived.

Chachamim (Sages of wise men of old) taught that the reason why Sara, Rivka and Rachel were withheld children was because HASHEM treasured the prayers of our forefathers and withheld children so that they would pray hard and save mankind thusly.

22 And the children struggled together within her; and she said: 'If it be so, wherefore do I live?' And she went to inquire of the LORD. 23 And the LORD said unto her: Two nations are in thy womb, and two peoples shall be separated from thy bowels; and the one people shall be stronger than the other people; and the elder shall serve the younger.

Stronger as they will be able to withstand empires which shall rise and crumble and inquisitions, holocaust and forced conversion of the hordes and masses that attack them. They shall have disproportionate amount of Nobel Prize Winners, influence on the development of mankind both physically and spiritually until they will prevail in the days of the Moshiach.

24 And when her days to be delivered were fulfilled, behold, there were twins in her womb. 25 And the first came forth ruddy, all over like a hairy mantle; and they called his name Esau.

Esav was a red-head and his antidote was from another red-head, David Melech Yisrael who was also described as “ruddy”. And as Novi Ovadia says, (1:21) And redeemers shall come up on mount Zion to judge the mount of Esau; and the kingdom shall be the LORD'S.
26 And after that came forth his brother, and his hand had hold on Esau's heel; and his name was called Jacob. And Isaac was threescore years old when she bore them.

The competition from the womb did not end and Yacov was trying spiritually to restrain Esav from running to evil.

27 And the boys grew; and Esau was a cunning hunter, a man of the field; and Jacob was a quiet man, dwelling in tents.

Esav was aggressive while Yacov was a quiet person living in the tent of Torah.

28 Now Isaac loved Esau, because he did eat of his venison; and Rebekah loved Jacob.

Esav was before Perkei Avos but he “bought his love” with venison.

29 And Jacob sod pottage; and Esau came in from the field, and he was faint.

He was cooking red lentils for this was the first meal after the burial of Avraham for Esav had done 5 bad things that day and HASHEM took Avraham before his time so this would not happen while he was alive. I only remember four. He killed Nimrod and took his skins which were from Adam, he killed or slaughtered a deer and ate from its limb while it still lived, he forced himself upon an engaged woman (engaged was a fully contracted wife but not consummated) and he did idol worship. I think the 5th one was stealing but I don’t remember if it came from stealing Nimrod’s coat.

30 And Esau said to Jacob: 'Let me swallow, I pray thee, some of this red, red pottage; for I am faint.' Therefore, was his name called Edom. 31 And Jacob said: 'Sell me first thy birthright.' 32 And Esau said: 'Behold, I am at the point to die; and what profit shall the birthright do to me?' 33 And Jacob said: 'Swear to me first'; and he swore unto him; and he sold his birthright unto Jacob. 34 And Jacob gave Esau bread and pottage of lentils; and he did eat and drink, and rose up, and went his way. So Esau despised his birthright.

Esav sold not only his first born portion but his place in the next world and burial in Chevron. This sale is important with the blessings given by Yitzchak.

26:1 And there was a famine in the land, beside the first famine that was in the days of Abraham. And Isaac went unto Abimelech king of the Philistines unto Gerar.

I am skipping this section this year, but you should know that the stories of the fathers are signs for the children with the bullying and robbing Yitzchak of his wells.

…34 And when Esau was forty years old, he took to wife Judith the daughter of Beeri the Hittite, and Basemath the daughter of Elon the Hittite. 35 And they were a bitterness of spirit unto Isaac and to Rebekah.

Unlike Yitzchak, he married un-worthy women of horrible stock. Rivka disliked their immodest behavior and both Yitzchak and she were sad that he did not marry a proper wife. (This was the intermarriage of their day.)

27:1 And it came to pass, that when Isaac was old, and his eyes were dim, so that he could not see, he called Esau his elder son, and said unto him: 'My son'; and he said unto him: 'Here am I.'

He never knew of the sale of the birthright to Yacov.

2 And he said: 'Behold now, I am old, I know not the day of my death. 3 Now therefore take, I pray thee, thy weapons, thy quiver and thy bow, and go out to the field, and take me venison; 4 and make me savoury food, such as I love, and bring it to me, that I may eat; that my soul may bless thee before I die.' 5 And Rebekah heard when Isaac spoke to Esau his son. And Esau went to the field to hunt for venison, and to bring it. 6 And Rebekah spoke unto Jacob her son, saying: 'Behold, I heard thy father speak unto Esau thy brother, saying:

Rivka was a mother raising the children while Yitzchak managed the business and learned Torah. She got to see the children grow with their personalities and Midos. She knew that Esav was not worthy of the blessing of Avraham and Yacov was.

7 Bring me venison, and make me savory food, that I may eat, and bless thee before the LORD before my death. 8 Now therefore, my son, hearken to my voice according to that which I command thee.

Yacov has a big dilemma. He should be honoring both father and mother and instead, he has to go against the will of one to please the other. He is torn and speaks of this to Rivka and she answers him.

… 11 And Jacob said to Rebekah his mother: 'Behold, Esau my brother is a hairy man, and I am a smooth man. 12 My father peradventure will feel me, and I shall seem to him as a mocker; and I shall bring a curse upon me, and not a blessing.' 13 And his mother said unto him: 'Upon me be thy curse, my son; only hearken to my voice, and go fetch me them.'

Since we say that “A man’s wife is like his body” he therefore follows Rivka. For she takes upon herself everything.

14 And he went, and fetched, and brought them to his mother; and his mother made savory food, such as his father loved. 15 And Rebekah took the choicest garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them upon Jacob her younger son. 16 And she put the skins of the kids of the goats upon his hands, and upon the smooth of his neck.

Rivka took the deception upon herself as Yacov was too straight. She, being the sister of Lavan the liar, knew how to deceive and trick people.

…36 And he said: 'Is not he rightly named Jacob? for he hath supplanted me these two times: he took away my birthright; and, behold, now he hath taken away my blessing.' And he said: 'Hast thou not reserved a blessing for me?'

When Yitzchak heard “these two times” he learned about the first and felt much better that Yacov had taken the blessing of the first born.

…40 And by thy sword shalt thou live, and thou shalt serve thy brother; and it shall come to pass when thou shalt break loose, that thou shalt shake his yoke from off thy neck. 41 And Esau hated Jacob because of the blessing wherewith his father blessed him. And Esau said in his heart: 'Let the days of mourning for my father be at hand; then will I slay my brother Jacob.'

He had a fit of anger and therefore he was ready to murder his brother.

42 And the words of Esau her elder son were told to Rebekah; and she sent and called Jacob her younger son, and said unto him: 'Behold, thy brother Esau, as touching thee, doth comfort himself, purposing to kill thee.

Rivka knows again what Yitzchak does not know. She concocts a plan to save Yacov and also get worthy grandchildren.

43 Now therefore, my son, hearken to my voice; and arise, flee thou to Laban my brother to Haran; 44 and tarry with him a few days, until thy brother's fury turn away; 45 until thy brother's anger turn away from thee, and he forget that which thou hast done to him; then I will send, and fetch thee from thence; why should I be bereaved of you both in one day?'

The few days were 14 years of learning with Shem and Ever as the Medrash says. Then 20 years with Lavan and yet we see Esav after 34 years ready to run and kill Yacov with an army of 400 men that he raised. So she cleverly hatches a plan to get Yacov away from Esav.

46 And Rebekah said to Isaac: 'I am weary of my life because of the daughters of Heth. If Jacob take a wife of the daughters of Heth, such as these, of the daughters of the land, what good shall my life do me?'

I came to you from my place of birth to produce what we call today Jewish Children and Esav has given me Goyim. Please encourage 63 year old Yacov to get married already to a woman of valor from a family with pedigree.

28:1 1 And Isaac called Jacob, and blessed him, and charged him, and said unto him: 'Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan. 2 Arise, go to Paddan-aram, to the house of Bethuel thy mother's father; and take thee a wife from thence of the daughters of Laban thy mother's brother.

Yitzchak is in the dark about Esav and agrees with Rivka’s request for worthy grandchildren.

3 And God Almighty bless thee, and make thee fruitful, and multiply thee, that thou may be a congregation of peoples; 4 and give thee the blessing of Abraham, to thee, and to thy seed with thee; that thou may inherit the land of thy sojornings, which God gave unto Abraham.'

Prior to this Yacov has been given physical blessings and now he is given spiritual blessings of Avraham and the inheritance of the land.

5 And Isaac sent away Jacob; and he went to Paddan-aram unto Laban, son of Bethuel the Aramean, the brother of Rebekah, Jacob's and Esau's mother. 6 Now Esau saw that Isaac had blessed Jacob and sent him away to Paddan-aram, to take him a wife from thence; and that as he blessed him he gave him a charge, saying: 'Thou shalt not take a wife of the daughters of Canaan';

Esav was a cunning hunter and shrewd in worldly matters and wanted to please his parents.

7 and that Jacob hearkened to his father and his mother, and was gone to Paddan-aram; 8 and Esau saw that the daughters of Canaan pleased not Isaac his father; 9 so Esau went unto Ishmael, and took unto the wives that he had Mahalath the daughter of Ishmael Abraham's son, the sister of Nebaioth, to be his wife.

Esav saw some pedigree in the daughter of Yishmael so it was an improvement over the Canaanite women so he did this to please Yitzchak. He was then a Baal Teshuva in the eyes of Yitzchak but not Rivka.

There is a nice young woman on Facebook who likes to write Chassidic Tales. I thought for a change I would share Sophia’s tale this week.

The disciples of the Maggid of Mezeritch had begged their master many times to show them Elijah the Prophet. Their persistence paid off; when a gathering of poritzim, wealthy Polish landowners, was being held the Maggid acceded to their request.
The Maggid instructed his disciples to stand in a certain location and watch the poritzim ride by. The third poritz they would see, he informed them, would be Elijah the Prophet. "If you are worthy," the Maggid added, "you will even merit to hear Torah thoughts from him."
The disciples followed the Maggid's instructions. They stood and waited in the exact spot the Maggid had indicated. When the third poritz rode by they hesitantly approached his carriage. True, he looked like an ordinary Polish poritz, but hadn't the Maggid declared that he was none other than Elijah the prophet?
Addressing him in Polish, they deferentially asked if they could speak with his lordship as they had a very important matter to discuss. To their surprise the "poritz" responded by flinging sharp insults and curses at them, after which he rode off to join the other landowners.
The bewildered and heartbroken disciples returned to the Maggid and related what had happened. They had seen Elijah the Prophet, for they didn't doubt for a moment that the poritz was, in truth, the prophet. But when they asked to speak with him he responded with a barrage of deprecations.
The Maggid's response was unexpected. "You rightly deserved the treatment he gave you! You knew for certain, for I gave you all the signs, that you were standing in the very presence of Elijah the Prophet. You should have addressed him in the holy tongue! You should have said to him 'Bless us!' instead of speaking to him in Polish and timidly asking the 'poritz' for an audience. If you could still relate to him as a poritz after I told you that he is Elijah the Prophet, you deserve the treatment you received!"
The Torah (in Deuteronomy) states, "You are a holy people to G-d your G-d." Every Jew is holy. Every Jew is, as the Baal Shem Tov taught, a trove of unlimited treasures.
But it's not enough to know in our heads that a fellow Jew is holy, that he has a wealth of goodness and G-dliness within him. It's insufficient to believe with absolutely certainty that what the Torah and great Jewish teachers of all generations have said about the worth of every Jew is true.
We have to relate to our brother or sister, from the start, in accordance with his or her true, goodly and holy nature. Then we will surely merit to see Elijah the Prophet - the harbinger of the Messianic Era - and ask of him, "Bless us."

The criticism from the story not only applies to these disciples who even merited to see Eliyahu HaNovi, but to greater people. Avraham bought the Machpelah Cave for burial instead of taking it for free as the land was given to him. Yacov bought Schem and David the threshing flood which became Har HaBeis of the Mikdash. Each one made the miscalculation that if the area is purchase there will be no dispute. If the area is conquered, then there is no dispute. It was the purchase there and the addressing of the Novi in Polish which ruined the completion.

From Yeshiva World News: From Judith W. The following story is viral on social media – and has been independent verified by YWN: This past weekend I heard an amazing story:

Mr. Sol Werdiger, CEO of Outerstuff, a company that produces sports apparel, received a phone call from Mr. Oh Joon, the South Korean UN Ambassador asking to meet him for lunch at a Kosher restaurant in Manhattan. Although Sol did not know the purpose of the meeting he agreed to meet with Mr. Joon.

incredible-story-because-an-orthodox-jew-in-ny-treated-an-employee-nicely-south-korea-abstained-in-u-n-votes-against-israel.

When they met, Mr. Joon told him the following, “I have always heard negative stereotypes about Jews and Israel and I took it at face value. Then, my daughter took an internship working on design in your company. Throughout the year, she has been telling me how wonderful it is to work at your company.” Mr. Joon continued, “There are four areas which stood out and impressed my daughter. 1) Everyday, at 1:30 p.m., no matter what was going on at the office, all the men including those from neighboring offices, retreated into a room to pray with sincerity and calm. 2) Every Friday the office shuts down early in the afternoon in preparation for your holy Sabbath and is closed on the Sabbath – this includes all workers no matter which faith or religion they maintain. 3) My daughter observed that each petitioner for charity – and there were many – were treated with respect and left with a check in hand. 4) My daughter was treated with the utmost respect and dignity.” Because of the amazing experience and lessons the company taught his daughter, Mr. Joon took out his checkbook and was ready to write a check returning all his daughter’s earnings! Mr. Werdiger wouldn’t hear from it. “Your daughter worked and earned her salary and rightfully deserves her pay, I will not accept any remuneration.”

Then the Ambassador relayed the most amazing thing. “As you know, I have voting privileges at the UN. Because of my renewed appreciation of the Jewish people, I abstained from voting on resolutions against Israel on three occasions. At one resolution I was the ninth vote needed to pass the motion and resolution against Israel and because I abstained, it did not pass!” Mr. Werdiger told me that no one at the office had any idea that this girl was the daughter of an Ambassador and no one ever imagined what type of impact their typical conduct at work had on her or how this impacted the votes against Israel. G-d has entrusted us to follow the example of our forefather Avraham to be trailblazers and to set examples becoming a light to all nations by living exemplary lives as outlined by the laws, personalities and experiences of our precious and timeless Torah!

Inyanay Diyoma

An observance from Dr. Harry: On Friday, hordes of desperate zombies were spotted desperately trying to save a few dollars on toys, apparel and cheaply made electronic goods all over America. Seemingly oblivious to the fact that virtually all of these goods were made outside of the United States in nations where it is legal to pay slave labor wages, these zombies often clashed violently with one another over items such as soap, toilet paper and jumbo-sized televisions. Black Friday puts the worst excesses of American materialism on display for the whole world to see, but most Americans don’t seem to care how pathetic we appear to be to the rest of the planet. The only thing that most Americans know is that it is “the holiday season”, and so now it is time to spend, spend, spend even if it means going into crippling amounts of credit card debt.

Overall, it is being projected that Americans will spend an all-time record high of 650 billion dollars this holiday season. That is an amount of money roughly equivalent to the yearly GDP of the nation of Saudi Arabia.

Forget the Syrian Civil War for a moment. Even without the Sunnis and Shiites competing to give each other machete haircuts every sunny morning, there would still be a permanent Muslim refugee crisis.

The vast majority of civil wars over the last ten years have taken place in Muslim countries. Muslim countries are also some of the poorest in the world. And Muslim countries also have high birth rates.

Combine violence and poverty with a population boom and you get a permanent migration crisis.

No matter what happens in Syria or Libya next year, that permanent migration crisis isn’t going away.

The Muslim world is expanding unsustainably. In the Middle East and Asia, Muslims tend to underperform their non-Muslim neighbors both educationally and economically. Oil is the only asset that gave Muslims any advantage and in the age of fracking, its value is a lot shakier than it used to be.

The Muslim world had lost its old role as the intermediary between Asia and the West. And it has no economic function in the new world except to blackmail it by spreading violence and instability.

Muslim countries with lower literacy rates, especially for women, are never going to be economic winners at any trade that doesn’t come gushing out of the ground. Nor will unstable dictatorships ever be able to provide social mobility or access to the good life. At best they’ll hand out subsidies for bread.

The Muslim world has no prospects for getting any better. The Arab Spring was a Western delusion.

Growing populations divided along tribal and religious lines are competing for a limited amount of land, power and wealth. Countries without a future are set to double in size.

There are only two solutions; war or migration.

Either you fight and take what you want at home. Or you go abroad and take what you want there.

Let’s assume that the Iraq War had never happened. How would a religiously and ethnically divided Iraq have managed its growth from 13 million in the eighties to 30 million around the Iraq War to 76 million in 2050?

The answer is a bloody civil war followed by genocide, ethnic cleansing and migration.

What’s happening now would have happened anyway. It was already happening under Saddam Hussein.

Baghdad has one of the highest population densities in the world. And it has no future. The same is true across the region. The only real economic plan anyone here has is to get money from the West.

Plan A for getting money out of the West is creating a crisis that will force it to intervene. That can mean anything from starting a war to aiding terrorists that threaten the West. Muslim countries keep shooting themselves in the foot so that Westerners will rush over to kiss the booboo and make it better.

Plan B is to move to Europe.

What's This?
And Plan B is a great plan. It’s the only real economic plan that works. At least until the West runs out of native and naïve Westerners who foot the bill for all the migrants, refugees and outright settlers.

For thousands of dollars, a Middle Eastern Muslim can pay to be smuggled into Europe. It’s a small investment with a big payoff. Even the lowest tier welfare benefits in Sweden are higher than the average salary in a typical Muslim migrant nation. And Muslim migrants are extremely attuned to the payoffs. It’s why they clamor to go to Germany or Sweden, not Greece or Slovakia. And it’s why they insist on big cities with an existing Muslim social welfare infrastructure, not some rural village.

A Muslim migrant is an investment for an entire extended family. Once the young men get their papers, family reunification begins. That doesn’t just mean every extended family member showing up and demanding their benefits. It also means that the family members will be selling access to Europe to anyone who can afford it. Don’t hike or raft your way to Europe. Mohammed or Ahmed will claim that you’re a family member. Or temporarily marry you so you can bring your whole extended family along.

Mohammed gets paid. So does Mo’s extended family which brokers these transactions. Human trafficking doesn’t just involve rafts. It’s about having the right family connections.

And all that is just the tip of a very big business iceberg.

Where do Muslim migrants come up with a smuggling fee that amounts to several years of salary for an average worker? Some come from wealthy families. Others are sponsored by crime networks and family groups that are out to move everything from drugs to weapons to large numbers of people into Europe.

Large loans will be repaid as the new migrants begin sending their new welfare benefits back home. Many will be officially unemployed even while unofficially making money through everything from slave labor to organized crime. European authorities will blame their failure to participate in the job market on racism rather than acknowledging that they exist within the confines of an alternate economy.

It’s not only individuals or families who can pursue Plan B. Turkey wants to join the European Union. It’s one solution for an Islamist populist economy built on piles of debt. The EU has a choice between dealing with the stream of migrants from Turkey moving to Europe. Or all of Turkey moving into Europe.

The West didn’t create this problem. Its interventions, however misguided, attempted to manage it.

Islamic violence is not a response to Western colonialism. Not only does it predate it, but as many foreign policy experts are so fond of pointing out, its greatest number of casualties are Muslims. The West did not create Muslim dysfunction. And it is not responsible for it. Instead the dysfunction of the Muslim world keeps dragging the West in. Every Western attempt to ameliorate it, from humanitarian aid to peacekeeping operations, only opens up the West to take the blame for Islamic dysfunction.

The permanent refugee crisis is a structural problem caused by the conditions of the Muslim world.

The West can’t solve the crisis at its source. Only Muslims can do that. And there are no easy answers. But the West can and should avoid being dragged down into the black hole of Muslim dysfunction.

Even Germany’s Merkel learned that the number of refugees is not a finite quantity that can be relieved with a charitable gesture. It’s the same escalating number of people that will show up if you start throwing bags of money out of an open window. And it’s a number that no country can absorb.

Muslim civil wars will continue even if the West never intervenes in them because their part of the world is fundamentally unstable. These conflicts will lead to the displacement of millions of people. But even without violence, economic opportunism alone will drive millions to the West. And those millions carry with them the dysfunction of their culture that will make them a burden and a threat.

If Muslims can’t reconcile their conflicts at home, what makes us think that they will reconcile them in Europe? Instead of resolving their problems through migration, they only export them to new shores. The same outbursts of Islamic violence, xenophobia, economic malaise and unsustainable growth follow them across seas and oceans, across continents and countries. Distance is no answer. Travel is no cure.

Solving Syria will solve nothing. The Muslim world is full of fault lines. It’s growing and it’s running out of room to grow. We can’t save Muslims from themselves. We can only save ourselves from their violence.

The permanent Muslim refugee crisis will never stop being our crisis unless we close the door.

An appeal from the Uganda Jewish Community: Enosh Keki Mainah
I wonder if you are aware about the food crisis problem in Uganda more especially in our community.
I started and launched a campaign towards rescuing my Jewish members by asking several people to help with whatever they can. We need about $1500 in order to have enough bags of rice and corn flour.
If you can be of support, we would really appreciate. If you can't donate, can you help to teach out to other people?

Russian air force to resume operations from Iran's Hamadan airbase
DEBKAfile December 1, 2016, 8:32 AM (IDT)
Viktor Ozerov, chairman of the defense and security committee of Russia's parliament, said Wednesday that his country has reached understandings with Tehran regarding the use by Russian warplanes of Iran's Hamadan airbase to conduct bombing missions against targets in Syria. The understandings are intended to provide an alternate base from which to operate if Russia's Admiral Kuznetsov aircraft carrier is sent to a different theater of operations, such as Libya, as DEBKAfile reported this week. Iranian Defense Minister Hossein Dehghan said earlier that his country would consider allowing Russia to conduct attacks against Syrian rebel targets from the airbase, located about 750 kilometers from Syria's eastern border.
