Parsha Shemini, Stories and starting with an appeal for a Kidney Donor for Daniel

Re: Daniel ben Rivka on my prayer list for the past few years. He has O minus blood and needs a kidney donation. He always tries to be strong and he is pictured on the right in the website. For those who want to donate. https://kidney4del.wordpress.com

This week, I had planned to put together three Parshiyos in order to catch up the Diaspora with Eretz Yisrael. However, Rabbis are not exempt from filing Taxes to their respective governments and I ran out of time. All in all, the Diaspora will be behind until May 10th Behar-Bechukosai. I shall try my best to catch up sooner.

As I put out this weekly Drasha, I have been informed, because Iran is planning revenge, the IDF in the north and especially the IAF are on the highest alert throughout Israeli Independence Day.

Parsha Shemini

On Pessach, I had great plans to at least think about what I would write for the Parsha. In one way it was similar to the Prince of Sheves Menashe on the eight day, plans got interrupted, fortunately for me not tragic. B”H it was just things to do and not the passing of great G-D Fearing men like the two sons of Aaron. The day started normal for Aaron and family just read the Pshat which I condensed.

9: 1 And it came to pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel;

Whenever we see Vayehi it usually shows that something bad is about to happen. Yitzchak will go upon the Akeda, Yacov’s life is about to end, in the days of Judges and there was a famine in the land and Elimelech leaves, etc.

2 and he said unto Aaron: 'Take thee a bull-calf for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them before the LORD. 3 And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak, saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of the first year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; … 8 So Aaron drew near unto the altar, and slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. 9 And the sons of Aaron presented the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10 But the fat, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver of the sin-offering, he made smoke upon the altar; as the LORD commanded Moses. …15 And the people's offering was presented; and he took the goat of the sin-offering which was for the people, and slew it, and offered it for sin, as the first. 16 And the burnt-offering was presented; and he offered it according to the ordinance. 17 And the meal-offering was presented; and he filled his hand therefrom, and made it smoke upon the altar, besides the burnt-offering of the morning. 18 He slew also the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which was for the people; and Aaron's sons delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar round about, 19 and the fat of the ox, and of the ram, the fat tail, and that which covers the inwards, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver. 20 And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he made the fat smoke upon the altar. 21 And the breasts and the right thigh Aaron waved for a wave-offering before the LORD; as Moses commanded. 22 And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the peace-offerings.

Up unto this point things were going great and everybody was happy. Prince Gamliel of Sheves Menashe and his tribe were celebrating festively.

23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the people.

Now the Mishkan and Mizbayach were complete and the eight day is above the course of nature as the six dimensions and Shabbos are the natural order.

24 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

They shouted “Blessed be HIS honorable NAME and Kingship forever and ever.”

10: 1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded them. 2 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and devoured them, and they died before the LORD.

Do not offer strange fire under the penalty of death!

3 Then Moses said unto Aaron: 'This is it that the LORD spoke, saying: Through them that are nigh unto Me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.' And Aaron held his peace.

I thought that either you or I would be taken up this day.

4 And Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said unto them: 'Draw near, carry your brethren from before the sanctuary out of the camp.' 5 So they drew near, and carried them in their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said.

Since they acted as the Burial Society, they would be Tumay Shell Mayt (contact with a dead body). Therefore, they went to Moshe later on and were given Pessach Sheni or the second Pessach.

6 And Moses said unto Aaron, and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons: 'Let not the hair of your heads go loose, neither rend your clothes, that ye die not, and that He be not wroth with all the congregation; but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel, bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled.

You are the Priests unto HASHEM and anointed. You must be there 24/7 to pray for Am Yisrael.

7 And ye shall not go out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of the LORD is upon you.' And they did according to the word of Moses.

They followed Moshe and let Am Yisrael participate in the mourning.

8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron, saying: 9 'Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not; it shall be a statute forever throughout your generations.

This is a hint that perhaps the two had been drinking even a little and entered the holiest of places with some intoxication.

10 And that ye may put difference between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; 11 and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.'

Perhaps they were also not pure but this is not in any Rabbinical tradition or literature. We do have a tradition that they entered the holy of holies without the bells and not on Yom Kippur which was another reason that they died.

… 18 Behold, the blood of it was not brought into the sanctuary within; ye should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.' 19 And Aaron spoke unto Moses: 'Behold, this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering before the LORD, and there have befallen me such things as these; and if I had eaten the sin-offering to-day, would it have been well-pleasing in the sight of the LORD? 20 And when Moses heard that, it was well-pleasing in his sight.

I love to eat, but today two of my sons were buried, I lost my appetite.

11:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: These are the living things which ye may eat among all the beasts that are on the earth. 3 Whatsoever parts the hoof, and is wholly cloven-footed, and cheweth the cud, among the beasts, that may ye eat.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tapir Is an animal that chews its cud and parts the hooves. We do not eat it today or certain locusts species as we have no oral tradition left for species of locusts that appear Kosher. Only in the days of the Moshiach will we be able to eat them with confidence.

4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of them that only chew the cud, or of them that only part the hoof: the camel, because he chew the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 5 And the rock-badger, because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 6 And the hare, because she chews the cud but parts not the hoof, she is unclean unto you.

Rabbi Yacov London Zal told our Shuir that of all the animals found in the world only these three animals have this characteristic and the pig the cloven hooves and none other.

7 And the swine, because he parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, but cheweth not the cud, he is unclean unto you. 8 Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you.

Only healthy animals that are ritually slaughtered not diseased with ‘mad cow disease’ or “bird flu’.

9 These may ye eat of all that are in the waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, them may ye eat. 10 And all that have not fins and scales in the seas, and in the rivers, of all that swarm in the waters, and of all the living creatures that are in the waters, they are a detestable thing unto you,

Sharks don’t have scales, eels, squid, shrimps, lobster, clams and other delicacies of the nations of the world are forbidden to us. There are substitute flavored kosher fish which can be made to taste like shrimp. They used to sell it at the supermarket in Modiin I do not know if they still make it. Many Jews cannot stand the smell of lobsters and to cook them alive by boiling them is more than just ordinary cruelty.

11 and they shall be a detestable thing unto you; ye shall not eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in detestation. 12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the waters, that is a detestable thing unto you.

The Torah is concise and if it repeats itself there must be a big Yetzer to see a Goy enjoying these creatures with relish and so the emphasis.

13 And these ye shall have in detestation among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the great vulture, and the bearded vulture, and the ospray; 14 and the kite, and the falcon after its kinds; 15 every raven after its kinds; 16 and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and the hawk after its kinds; 17 and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl; 18 and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the carrion-vulture; 19 and the stork, and the heron after its kinds, and the hoopoe, and the bat.

The Torah does not distinguish between birds and mammals here as the bad is included in forbidden food from flying things. What is missing at this point is the permissible fowls. Note the Penguin, Toucan and Kiwi are not mentioned for they were removed too far from Eretz Yisrael. The signs of Kosher Birds are not given here and only the pigeon or dove is mentioned as a Korban.

20 All winged swarming things that go upon all fours are a detestable thing unto you. 21 Yet these may ye eat of all winged swarming things that go upon all fours, which have jointed legs above their feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth; 22 even these of them ye may eat: the locust after its kinds, and the bald locust after its kinds, and the cricket after its kinds, and the grasshopper after its kinds. 23 But all winged swarming things, which have four feet, are a detestable thing unto you.

Locusts and grasshoppers should still be eaten; however, except for the Yemenites, we lost the tradition what is Kosher and the Ashkenazi Rabbis forbade this. I may think what I want about errors in lieu of the Yemenite Community Tradition, but we go after the majority Rabbinical Opinion even if it appears wrong. [See the story from the Talmud Gittin of the Furnace that put the Great Rabbi Eliezer ben Horkanis in Cherem (excommunicated by the Sanhedrin until his death) and Rabbi Akavia ben Mahalalel refusing to become the head of the Sanhedrin over his tradition.]

…27 And whatsoever goeth upon its paws, among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you; whoso toucheth their carcass shall be unclean until the even. 28 And he that bears the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; they are unclean unto you. 29 And these are they which are unclean unto you among the swarming things that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard after its kinds, 30 and the gecko, and the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon. 31 These are they which are unclean to you among all that swarm; whosoever does touch them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even. 32 And upon whatsoever any of them, when they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even; then shall it be clean.

The vessel that touched a dead reptile, mouse, rat, etc. must be cleansed in the Mikvah.

However if not used for a meal like this example: …37 And if aught of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed which is to be sown, it is clean. 38 But if water be put upon the seed, and aught of their carcass fall thereon, it is unclean unto you.

This is only the case if the seed was dry. However, water becomes a conductor of Tuma and upgrades the severity or degree of the Tuma.

39 And if any beast, of which ye may eat, die, he that touches the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even. 40 And he that eats of the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; he also that bears the carcass of it shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.

On the 7th Day of Pessach, I was walking with another Rabbi outside of Israel and we saw before us a carcass of deer. We waited until a traffic light which stopped the oncoming traffic to walk by. I jokingly said, “That is the first time in my 70 years that I ever passed the buck.” For even if we don’t have a Mikdash today in it was outside of Eretz Yisrael, it is forbidden to make oneself Tumay.

41 And every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth is a detestable thing; it shall not be eaten. 42 Whatsoever spon the belly, and whatsoever goes upon all fours, or whatsoever hath many feet, even all swarming things that swarm upon the earth, them ye shall not eat; for they are a detestable thing.

Snakes as lizards have stubby legs and crocodiles were mentioned already.

43 Ye shall not make yourselves detestable with any swarming thing that swarms, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean with them, that ye should be defiled thereby.

Obviously this is not locusts but other insects.

44 For I am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am holy; neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of swarming thing that moves upon the earth. 45 For I am the LORD that brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.

This is the rule: Ye shall therefore be holy, for I am holy. We are made in the Image of HASHEM and therefore the Bnei Yisrael (which are the chosen people) must be Holy like HASHEM!

46 This is the law of the beast, and of the fowl, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every creature that swarms upon the earth; 47 to make a difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.

We are missing Turkeys, Chickens, Ducks, Quail, etc. For even though the Torah has mentioned the eating of quail previously, the definition of kosher birds and what to look for to find them is not defined in our Parsha.

From May: HOW COMPOSER LEONARD BERNSTEIN HELPED ISRAEL DEFEAT EGYPT!

While Broadway legend Leonard Bernstein delighted the world with his music for decades, many are unaware of his role in Israel’s War of Independence!
The late Broadway composer Leonard Bernstein traveled to Israel in 1948 during the height of the young state’s war for independence to play his part by bringing music to lift the morale of a population under siege.
Bernstein advertised a concert in the southern Israeli city of Be’er Sheva. Thousands of wounded and recovering troops attended the event along with thousands more from the civilian population.
Unbeknownst to the heroic musician, Egyptian reconnaissance planes were eyeing the city from above and reported thousands of troops massing in Be’er Sheva.
See how this concert became an act of musical subterfuge that helped bring victory to Israel!

Google translate: Scientists announced Monday, April 2, to have detected the most distant star ever observed: a blue supergiant located 9.3 billion light-years from Earth. This discovery was made thanks to NASA's Hubble Space Telescope.
This star is up to a million times brighter and about twice as hot as our sun. It's officially called MACS J1149 + 2223 Lensed Star-1, but scientists have dubbed it Icarus.

Located in a distant spiral galaxy, it is at least 100 times farther than the other stars previously observed, except for objects, such as the huge supernova explosions, which mark the death of certain stars. Older galaxies were spotted, but their individual stars were indistinguishable.
Scientists took advantage of a phenomenon called "gravitational lens" to spot the star. It involves the bending of light by very massive clusters of galaxies between the observer and the light source, which magnifies and makes visible distant celestial objects, which would otherwise be undetectable.
