Kristallnacht the original cancel culture by Rabbi
Rachamim Pauli
On the night of Nov.9th to 10th
1938, Zev was a young boy living in Germany. He was scared Synagogues were
being burnt down, Jewish Stores looted and the most cultured and civilized
country in the world organized a national pogrom on their Jews. Not because
during WWI the Jews were disloyal. For my grandfather in Austria was a Lt. in
the Calvary and his brother Julius died in a burning forest in Romania fighting
for the Kaiser. No, it was because the Jews were considered inferior beings and
had to be canceled and destroyed like rats. The Germans were the elite superior
men.
About 23 to 25 years ago, I was working with a group of
Israelis. I sat in an office in Israel. They were in Serbia in a factory making
some repairs on a subcontracted part. Bosnia was using standard Arab Terror
attacks against civilians and blaming the Serbians. They were evacuated the
night before the US bombed Serbia. I knew the truth but when Clinton went after
them, some of my cousins told me never to e-mail them again. I was canceled by
some people that hadn’t the faintest connection to people there on the ground.
Thus began my first experience with cancel culture.
Lost to cancel culture a shorting bread story: Myra Holland-Proctor: "A
great woman erased from history by idiots.
The
branding of the syrup was a tribute to this woman’s gifts and talents. Now
future generations will not even know this beautiful woman existed. What a
shame. The world knew her as “Aunt Jemima”, but her given name was Nancy Green
and she was a true American success story. She was born a slave in 1834
Montgomery County, KY. and became a wealthy superstar in the advertising world,
as its first living trademark. Green was 56-yrs old when she was selected as
spokesperson for a new ready-mixed, self-rising pancake flour and made her
debut in 1893 at a fair and exposition in Chicago. She demonstrated the pancake
mix and served thousands of pancakes, and became an immediate star. She was a
good storyteller, her personality was warm and appealing, and her showmanship
was exceptional. Her exhibition booth drew so many people that special security
personnel were assigned to keep the crowds moving. Nancy Green was signed to a
lifetime contract, traveled on promotional tours all over the country, and was
extremely well paid. Her financial freedom and stature as a national
spokesperson enabled her to become a leading advocate against poverty and in
favor of equal rights for all Americans. She maintained her job until her death
in 1923, at age 89. This was a remarkable woman, and sadly she has been ERASED
by politics. I wanted you to know and remind you in this cancel culture time
period."
Parsha Vayetze
We
had a few Parshiyos that dealt with the life of Avram-Avraham from the from the
end Parsha Noach until the end of Parsha Chayei Sara. Yitzchak appeared in
Vayera, Chayei Sara and Toldos and is only heard of again upon his passing.
Yacov appeared in Toldos and this week is the main protagonist. He continues on
until the end of Sefer Beresheis with his passing.
28:10 And Jacob went out from Beer-Sheba, and went toward
Haran. 11 And he lighted upon the place, and tarried there all night,
because the sun was set; and he took one of the stones of the place, and put it
under his head, and lay down in that place to sleep.
He moved pretty quickly as he was
fleeing Esav. The Midrash says that Eliphaz, the son of Esav, caught up to
Yacov. Yacov was 63 and Eliphaz in his early 20’s at best. Yacov is stronger.
He gives him all his wealth and convinces him that a poor man is like a dead
man. Eliphaz will show the wealth to his father and come back a hero and Yacov
will live without having to murder Eliphaz for them it is a win-win situation.
Yacov has no plans as he leaves to ever come back.
12 And he dreamed, and behold a
ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven; and behold the
angels of God ascending and descending on it. 13 And, behold, the
LORD stood beside him, and said: 'I am the LORD, the God of Abraham thy father,
and the God of Isaac. The land whereon thou lie, to thee will I give it, and to
thy seed.
What was with Eliphaz changes over
night as HASHEM appears to him in a dream. He sees sometimes his Angel(s)
ascend and sometime Esav then suddenly for over 2000 rungs Esav’s ascends as
the great cry of Esav has made echoes in heaven. But all’s well that ends well
and it is Yacov who stands before the L-RD. Yacov and his seed will inherit the
land but there will be lots of troubles, sorrows, trials and tribulations until
the time when Har Tzion will judge Har Esav.
14 And thy seed shall be as the
dust of the earth, and thou shalt spread abroad to the west, and to the east,
and to the north, and to the south. And in thee and in thy seed shall all the
families of the earth be blessed.
You will have millions upon millions
of children and the blessings of all will come through you. But when the Bnei
Yisrael are murdered or pogromed blessings are removed from parts of the world
if not all. Deaths, plagues, traffic accidents, famine and other things occur.
15 And, behold, I am with thee,
and will keep thee whithersoever thou go, and will bring thee back into this
land; for I will not leave thee, until I have done that which I have spoken to
thee of.'
Yesterday you had no intention of
returning to Eretz Yisrael (at that time Canaan) but I will guard you and bring
you back safe and sound. Even a miracle will occur and Esav after 34 years will
see a limping brother who has aged tremendously and his internal mercy from
Avraham and Yitzchak will be aroused.
16 And Jacob awaked out of his
sleep, and he said: 'Surely the LORD is in this place; and I knew it
not.' 17 And he was afraid, and said: 'How full of awe is this place!
this is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of
heaven.'
Yacov realized that he was sleeping on
holy ground.
18 And Jacob rose up early in the
morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head, and set it up for a
pillar, and poured oil upon the top of it. 19 And he called the name
of that place Beth-el, but the name of the city was Luz at the
first. 20 And Jacob vowed a vow, saying: 'If God will be with me, and
will keep me in this way that I go, and will give me bread to eat, and raiment
to put on, 21 so that I come back to my father's house in peace, then
shall the LORD be my God,
Yacov did not ask for winning the
lottery or a roof or tent over his head. All he wanted was a minimum of a
garment to cover himself and sufficient food to survive.
22 and this stone, which I have
set up for a pillar, shall be God's house; and of all that Thou shalt give me I
will surely give the tenth unto Thee.'
I will establish a House
of the L-RD on this spot and give Maaser Money.
29:1 Then Jacob went on his journey, and came to the land of the
children of the east.
There are two different stories in the
Midrash. The first is that he had miraculous shortening of his path and arrived
in Haran. The send is that after the miraculous dream that he had, he decided
to fortify his Torah by learning with Shem and Ever for 14 years placing him at
age 77years when he reaches the east. Esav does not of his arrival and is more
certain that Eliphaz has finished him off.
2 And he looked, and behold a
well in the field, and, lo, three flocks of sheep lying there by it.--For out
of that well they watered the flocks. And the stone upon the well's mouth was
great. 3 And thither were all the flocks gathered; and they rolled
the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the sheep, and put the stone back
upon the well's mouth in its place.-- 4 And Jacob said unto them: 'My
brethren, whence are ye?' And they said: 'Of Haran are we.'
He did not have a GPS Cellphone but he
realized “You have reached your destination!”
5 And he said unto them: 'Know ye
Laban the son of Nahor?' And they said: 'We know him.' 6 And he said
unto them: 'Is it well with him?' And they said: 'It is well; and, behold,
Rachel his daughter comes with the sheep.'
Rivka was either 3 or 14 when she
married Yitzchak. Yacov was born after 20 years of marriage and he is now 77.
Rivka would be most likely the age of 111years at this time. Lavan was her
older brother.
7 And he said: 'Lo, it is yet
high day, neither is it time that the cattle should be gathered together; water
ye the sheep, and go and feed them.' 8 And they said: 'We cannot,
until all the flocks be gathered together, and they roll the stone from the
well's mouth; then we water the sheep.' 9 While he was yet speaking
with them, Rachel came with her father's sheep; for she tended
them. 10 And it came to pass, when Jacob saw Rachel the daughter of
Laban his mother's brother, and the sheep of Laban his mother's brother, that
Jacob went near, and rolled the stone from the well's mouth, and watered the
flock of Laban his mother's brother.
With his staff he used a wedge rock
underneath and make a fulcrum that pivoted the rock open so that he could water
Rachel’s flock. Rivka according to the Midrash had the water rise towards her.
11 And Jacob kissed Rachel, and
lifted up his voice, and wept.
Yacov ran and kissed either on the
forehead or lips with a big hug Rachel. She was special to be his wife. You might
ask that what is a Frum Yisrael doing hugging an unmarried woman who is
considered a Niddah without Mikvah? The simple answer is that this is before
Matan Torah and he knows that Rachel has been put aside to be his wife. The
attraction is too great. Or has we say in Hebrew. There is no guardian for
modest relationships – Ayn Apitropus Le Arayos.
12 And Jacob told Rachel that he
was her father's brother, and that he was Rebekah's son; and she ran and told
her father.
It could be that first Yacov told
Rachel who he was, they kissed and then she ran and told her father. That would
be much more logical than a 77year old stranger coming out of nowhere kissing
Rachel and crying on her shoulder.
13 And it came to pass, when
Laban heard the tidings of Jacob his sister's son, that he ran to meet him, and
embraced him, and kissed him, and brought him to his house. And he told Laban
all these things.
The Midrash has him coming to check
for jewels and precious items as he hugs him and French kisses him for checking
for jewels in his mouth or teeth.
14 And Laban said to him: 'Surely
thou art my bone and my flesh.' And he abode with him the space of a
month.
Perhaps he tells what happened between
him and Esav and Lavan sees him as a fellow cheat and in his business. The
Pshat is that that he is family aka flesh from Rivka.
15 And Laban said unto Jacob:
'Because thou art my brother, shouldest thou therefore serve me for naught?
tell me, what shall thy wages be?' 16 Now Laban had two daughters:
the name of the elder was Leah, and the name of the younger was
Rachel. 17 And Leah's eyes were weak; but Rachel was of beautiful
form and fair to look upon.
Leah was a righteous woman so much so
that she would be buried in Chevron in the cave of the Machpelah next to Yacov.
Her eyes were weak for crying and praying not to be forced to marry the wicked
Esav who was the older one. She was the older one in her family.
18 And Jacob loved Rachel; and he
said: 'I will serve thee seven years for Rachel thy younger daughter.' 19 And
Laban said: 'It is better that I give her to thee, than that I should give her
to another man; abide with me.' 20 And Jacob served seven years for
Rachel; and they seemed unto him but a few days, for the love he had to her. 21 And
Jacob said unto Laban: 'Give me my wife, for my days are filled, that I may go
in unto her.'
Yacov worked and worked and is now
84years old. No youngster to start a family.
22 And Laban gathered together
all the men of the place, and made a feast. 23 And it came to pass in
the evening, that he took Leah his daughter, and brought her to him; and he
went in unto her.
There is no mention of the sons of
Lavan, as according to the Midrash, he had none until Yacov brought the
blessing upon his house.
24 And Laban gave Zilpah his
handmaid unto his daughter Leah for a handmaid. 25 And it came to
pass in the morning that, behold, it was Leah; and he said to Laban: 'What is
this thou hast done unto me? did not I serve with thee for Rachel? wherefore
then hast thou beguiled me?' 26 And Laban said: 'It is not so done in
our place, to give the younger before the first-born. 27 Fulfil the
week of this one, and we will give thee the other also for the service which
thou shalt serve with me yet seven other years.'
I have heard from Rabbi Tuvia Mushkin
Shlita that was a student with Rabbi B. Wein Shlita and others that he read or
heard of a Midrash that states that Bilhah and Zilpah were also sired by Lavan
from his slave girl and that they were servants of their half-sisters. This Yacov
married four sisters in the end.
28 And Jacob did so, and
fulfilled her week; and he gave him Rachel his daughter to wife.
This was truly a week of Sheva Brachos
and when fulfilled, he married Rachel and would work another 7 years for her.
29 And Laban gave to Rachel his
daughter Bilhah his handmaid to be her handmaid. 30 And he went in
also unto Rachel, and he loved Rachel more than Leah, and served with him yet
seven other years. 31 And the LORD saw that Leah was hated, and he
opened her womb; but Rachel was barren.
There was some tension at first with
Leah as he was infatuated or madly in love with Rachel but he loved Leah to a
lesser degree and thus the Torah writes that she was hated. Hated or not hated,
he would consult with both Rachel and Leah later in this Parsha and as much as
he loved Rachel, her body was not exhumed to be buried in Chevron but he found
his eternal resting place next to Leah so let us put the hatred in proportion.
32 And Leah conceived, and bore a
son, and she called his name Reuben; for she said: 'Because the LORD hath
looked upon my affliction; for now, my husband will love me.'
She wanted the romantic gestures that
Rachel received and hoped by delivering Yacov his first-born son, he would be
deeper in love with.
33 And she conceived again, and
bore a son; and said: 'Because the LORD hath heard that I am hated, He hath
therefore given me this son also.' And she called his name Simeon.
The L-RD has listened unto me.
34 And she conceived again, and
bore a son; and said: 'Now this time will my husband be joined unto me, because
I have borne him three sons.' Therefore was his name called Levi.
The Hebrew root is Lev or Heart and
she was vying for Yacov’s full heart to love her.
35 And she conceived again, and
bore a son; and she said: 'This time will I praise the LORD.' Therefore, she
called his name Judah; and she left off bearing.
Close to the letters of
the DIVINE NAME but also to have Yacov join unto her.
30:1 And
when Rachel saw that she bore Jacob no children, Rachel envied her sister; and
she said unto Jacob: 'Give me children, or else I die.'
Without children, I am
like a walking dead woman. I have nothing to show for my life.
2 And Jacob's anger was kindled against Rachel;
and he said: 'Am I in God's stead, who hath withheld from thee the fruit of the
womb?'
Since I have been able
to have children with Leah, it is not my physical fault. I am praying for you,
you are praying for yourself but I have no idea why G-D is withholding children
from you. I am sure that the Lubavitcher and his wife had their own person
sadness in this respect but he felt that they were the parents of his
Chassidim.
3 And she said: 'Behold my maid Bilhah, go in unto
her; that she may bear upon my knees, and I also may be built up through
her.'
Please take Bilhah and I
will forester mother her children and thus has the please of being a mother.
4 And she gave him Bilhah her handmaid to wife;
and Jacob went in unto her. 5 And Bilhah conceived, and bore Jacob a
son. 6 And Rachel said: 'God hath judged me, and hath also heard my
voice, and hath given me a son.' Therefore, called she his name Dan.
Dan is to Judge and thus
Rachel felt that by raising Dan, she was favorably judged.
7 And Bilhah Rachel's handmaid conceived again,
and bore Jacob a second son. 8 And Rachel said: 'With mighty
wrestlings have I wrestled with my sister, and have prevailed.' And she called
his name Naphtali.
Rachel had now two
forester children who were sired by Yacov and felt better.
9 When Leah saw that she had left off bearing, she
took Zilpah her handmaid, and gave her to Jacob to wife. 10 And
Zilpah Leah's handmaid bore Jacob a son. 11 And Leah said: 'Fortune
is come!' And she called his name Gad.
Gad means both goat and luck. Leah felt that she was
lucky again.
12 And Zilpah Leah's handmaid bore Jacob a second
son. 13 And Leah said: 'Happy am I! for the daughters will call me
happy.' And she called his name Asher.
Now half the future tribes would be raised by Leah and
this made her happy. Since daddy had to visit his sons, he would spend time
talking with Leah and giving her deserve attention.
14 And Reuben went in the days of wheat harvest,
and found mandrakes in the field, and brought them unto his mother Leah. Then
Rachel said to Leah: 'Give me, I pray thee, of thy son's mandrakes.'
The root is hallucinogenic and narcotic
it became known as a love plant over the years. It was given productive
properties that it did not have. It might have been the first ‘date rape’ drug
and then turned into an aphrodisiac for married women over the centuries. She
received the stimulus drug.
15 And she said unto her: 'Is it a small matter
that thou hast taken away my husband? and would thou take away my son's
mandrakes also?' And Rachel said: 'Therefore he shall lie with thee to-night
for thy son's mandrakes.' 16 And Jacob came from the field in the
evening, and Leah went out to meet him, and said: 'Thou must come in unto me;
for I have surely hired thee with my son's mandrakes.' And he lay with her that
night. 17 And God hearkened unto Leah, and she conceived, and bore
Jacob a fifth son. 18 And Leah said: 'God hath given me my hire,
because I gave my handmaid to my husband. And she called his name Issachar.
This boy is my payment from G-D for giving the Mandrake
to Rachel.
19 And Leah conceived again, and bore a sixth son
to Jacob. 20 And Leah said: 'God hath endowed me with a good dowry;
now will my husband dwell with me, because I have borne him six sons.' And she
called his name Zebulun.
I have a good portion six out of twelve Tribes and two
more under my wings from Zilpah.
21 And afterwards she bore a daughter, and called
her name Dinah.
I have accepted the judgement that she is a girl.
22 And God remembered Rachel, and God hearkened to
her, and opened her womb. 23 And she conceived, and bore a son, and
said: 'God hath taken away my reproach.' 24 And she called his name
Joseph, saying: 'The LORD add to me another son.'
Please G-D add for me another son so that I will be at
least like the servant girls in bearing.
25 And it came to pass, when Rachel had borne
Joseph, that Jacob said unto Laban: 'Send me away, that I may go unto mine own
place, and to my country. 26 Give me my wives and my children for
whom I have served thee, and let me go; for thou know my service wherewith I
have served thee.' 27 And Laban said unto him: 'If now I have found
favor in thine eyes--I have observed the signs, and the LORD hath blessed me
for thy sake.'
I now have sons and have become richer from your
blessings. Please stay some more and I will give you your wages as the 14
serving years have passed. Yacov is now 91 years old. He is longing to see his
parents and yet he continues on for his wages.
28 And he said: 'Appoint me thy wages, and I will
give it.' 29 And he said unto him: 'Thou know how I have served thee,
and how thy cattle have fared with me. 30 For it was little which
thou had before I came, and it hath increased abundantly; and the LORD hath
blessed thee whithersoever I turned. And now when shall I provide for mine own
house also?' 31 And he said: 'What shall I give thee?' And Jacob
said: 'Thou shalt not give me aught; if thou wilt do this thing for me, I will
again feed thy flock and keep it. 32 I will pass through all thy
flock to-day, removing from thence every speckled and spotted one, and every
dark one among the sheep, and the spotted and speckled among the goats; and of
such shall be my hire. 33 So shall my righteousness witness against
me hereafter, when thou shalt come to look over my hire that is before thee:
every one that is not speckled and spotted among the goats, and dark among the
sheep, that if found with me shall be counted stolen.'
These are the ones that I want. Anything that is pure
white or striped etc. shall be yours.
34 And Laban said: 'Behold, would it might be
according to thy word.' 35 And he removed that day the he-goats that
were streaked and spotted, and all the she-goats that were speckled and
spotted, every one that had white in it, and all the dark ones among the sheep,
and gave them into the hand of his sons. 36 And he set three days'
journey betwixt himself and Jacob. And Jacob fed the rest of Laban's
flocks. 37 And Jacob took him rods of fresh poplar, and of the almond
and of the plane-tree; and peeled white streaks in them, making the white
appear which was in the rods.
He brought the sheep to drink and he knew the secret of
reproduction. (Sod) This is that the thought of the mother whether human or
animal at the time of conception is essential for what is born. The mother
sheep or goat would see the reflection of the rods coming to drink and the male
would mount her during the drinking causing the dots, streaks or blotches
depending what was carved on the rods. This the healthier sheep and goats bore
what Yacov wanted.
38 And he set the rods which he had peeled over
against the flocks in the gutters in the watering-troughs where the flocks came
to drink; and they conceived when they came to drink. 39 And the
flocks conceived at the sight of the rods, and the flocks brought forth
streaked, speckled, and spotted. 40 And Jacob separated the lambs--he
also set the faces of the flocks toward the streaked and all the dark in the
flock of Laban--and put his own droves apart, and put them not unto Laban's
flock. 41 And it came to pass, whensoever the stronger of the flock
did conceive, that Jacob laid the rods before the eyes of the flock in the
gutters, that they might conceive among the rods; …
31:1 And he heard the words of Laban's sons, saying: 'Jacob hath
taken away all that was our father's; and of that which was our father's hath
he gotten all this wealth.' 2 And Jacob beheld the countenance of
Laban, and, behold, it was not toward him as beforetime.
Lavan has turned sour towards Yacov and
not as before.
3 And the LORD said unto Jacob:
'Return unto the land of thy fathers, and to thy kindred; and I will be with
thee.' 4 And Jacob sent and called Rachel and Leah to the field unto
his flock, 5 and said unto them: 'I see your father's countenance,
that it is not toward me as beforetime; but the God of my father hath been with
me.
Joke: I must have gotten his goat!
6 And ye know that with all my
power I have served your father. 7 And your father hath mocked me,
and changed my wages ten times; but God suffered him not to hurt me.
Here he consults with both Leah and
Rachel and no wife has precedence. Yacov is now married 13 years to them and
97years old. Their marriages are stable and full partners with him. The giving
birth competition has ended more or less. Rachel is pregnant be he loves Leah
deeply. They consult together in the field without the ears of anybody else
either children or even loyal servants (servant-sister-wives).
8 If he said thus: The speckled
shall be thy wages; then all the flock bore speckled; and if he said thus: The
streaked shall be thy wages; then bore all the flock streaked. 9 Thus
God hath taken away the cattle of your father, and given them to
me. 10 And it came to pass at the time that the flock conceived, that
I lifted up mine eyes, and saw in a dream, and, behold, the he-goats which
leaped upon the flock were streaked, speckled, and grizzled.
For six years, I have been working for
this wage or that and the sheep have been giving birth like my wages.
11 And the angel of God said unto
me in the dream: Jacob; and I said: Here am I. 12 And he said: Lift
up now thine eyes, and see, all the he-goats which leap upon the flock are
streaked, speckled, and grizzled; for I have seen all that Laban doeth unto
thee. 13 I am the God of Beth-el, where thou didst anoint a pillar,
where thou didst vow a vow unto Me. Now arise, get thee out from this land, and
return unto the land of thy nativity.'
G-D appeared to me and told me to go
home.
14 And Rachel and Leah answered
and said unto him: 'Is there yet any portion or inheritance for us in our
father's house? 15 Are we not accounted by him strangers? for he hath
sold us, and hath also quite devoured our price. 16 For all the
riches which God hath taken away from our father, that is ours and our
children's. Now then, whatsoever God hath said unto thee, do.'
What G-D has taken from our father, he
has given to his daughters and grandchildren it is not stolen by marauders or
strangers. The sheep and cattle will stay in Lavan’s family. Our father will
not out live Noach or Shem and most likely not even Terach.
17 Then Jacob rose up, and set
his sons and his wives upon the camels; 18 and he carried away all
his cattle, and all his substance which he had gathered, the cattle of his
getting, which he had gathered in Paddan-aram, to go to Isaac his father unto
the land of Canaan. 19 Now Laban was gone to shear his sheep. And
Rachel stole the teraphim that were her father's.
Yacov did not know this. She
supposedly did not want him observing Avoda Zara.
20 And Jacob outwitted Laban the
Aramean, in that he told him not that he fled. 21 So he fled with all
that he had; and he rose up, and passed over the River, and set his face toward
the mountain of Gilead.
In modern terms this is identified as
on the Golan Heights but chances are it is more towards the Turkish Lebanese
Border as that is the northern boundary of Eretz Yisrael. For the stone pile of
a border marker should be there for future generations.
22 And it was told Laban on the
third day that Jacob was fled. 23 And he took his brethren with him,
and pursued after him seven days' journey; and he overtook him in the mountain
of Gilead. 24 And God came to Laban the Aramean in a dream of the
night, and said unto him: 'Take heed to thyself that thou speak not to Jacob
either good or bad.'
Avraham was protected with Pharaoh and
Avimelech.
25 And Laban came up with Jacob.
Now Jacob had pitched his tent in the mountain; and Laban with his brethren
pitched in the mountain of Gilead. 26 And Laban said to Jacob: 'What
hast thou done, that thou hast outwitted me, and carried away my daughters as
though captives of the sword? 27 Wherefore didst thou flee secretly,
and outwit me; and didst not tell me, that I might have sent thee away with
mirth and with songs, with tabret and with harp;
Even the Washington Post would give
Lavan a few Pinocchio’s for this story.
28 and didst not suffer me to
kiss my sons and my daughters? now hast thou done foolishly. 29 It is
in the power of my hand to do you hurt; but the God of your father spoke unto
me yesternight, saying: Take heed to thyself that thou speak not to Jacob
either good or bad.
He wanted to kill Yacov as Saddam
Hussein killed two sons-in-law via their families but G-D prevented this.
30 And now that thou art surely
gone, because thou sore longest after thy father's house, wherefore hast thou
stolen my gods?'
Yacov knows nothing about this because
of what he says, he will lose his beloved Rachel on the way.
31 And Jacob answered and said to
Laban: 'Because I was afraid; for I said: Lest thou shouldest take thy
daughters from me by force.
Yacov had good reason to fear for his
life.
32 With whomsoever thou finds thy
gods, he shall not live; before our brethren discern thou what is thine with
me, and take it to thee.'--For Jacob knew not that Rachel had stolen
them.-- 33 And Laban went into Jacob's tent, and into Leah's tent,
and into the tent of the two maid-servants; but he found them not. And he went
out of Leah's tent, and entered into Rachel's tent. 34 Now Rachel had
taken the teraphim, and put them in the saddle of the camel, and sat upon them.
And Laban felt about all the tent, but found them not. 35 And she
said to her father: 'Let not my lord be angry that I cannot rise up before
thee; for the manner of women is upon me.' And he searched, but found not the
teraphim.
He knew that she was expecting so he
went easy upon her, checked her tent and did not bother to have her move.
36 And Jacob was wroth, and
strove with Laban. And Jacob answered and said to Laban: 'What is my trespass?
what is my sin, that thou hast hotly pursued after me?
Lavan had searched and found nothing
stolen. Now Yacov was justifiably angry.
37 Whereas thou hast felt about
all my stuff, what hast thou found of all thy household stuff? Set it here
before my brethren and thy brethren, that they may judge betwixt us
two. 38 These twenty years have I been with thee; thy ewes and thy
she-goats have not cast their young, and the rams of thy flocks have I not
eaten. 39 That which was torn of beasts I brought not unto thee; I
bore the loss of it; of my hand didst thou require it, whether stolen by day or
stolen by night. 40 Thus I was: in the day the drought consumed me,
and the frost by night; and my sleep fled from mine eyes. 41 These
twenty years have I been in thy house: I served thee fourteen years for thy two
daughters, and six years for thy flock; and thou hast changed my wages ten
times. 42 Except the God of my father, the God of Abraham, and the
Fear of Isaac, had been on my side, surely now had thou sent me away empty. God
hath seen mine affliction and the labor of my hands, and gave judgment
yesternight.'
Yacov knows that he would have been
sent away without a thing.
43 And Laban answered and said
unto Jacob: 'The daughters are my daughters, and the children are my children,
and the flocks are my flocks, and all that thou see is mine; and what can I do
this day for these my daughters, or for their children whom they have
borne? 44 And now come, let us make a covenant, I and thou; and let
it be for a witness between me and thee.'
Lavan wants only these women will be
wives of Yacov and no more so as to keep the wealth in the family of his heirs.
45 And Jacob took a stone, and
set it up for a pillar. 46 And Jacob said unto his brethren: 'Gather
stones'; and they took stones, and made a heap. And they did eat there by the
heap. 47 And Laban called it Jegar-sahadutha; but Jacob called it
Galeed.
The name is the pile (of stones) that
is witness. Or simply a border marker. It was forbidden for Yacov and family to
go north to attack Padam Aram. And the reverse of Lavan or his great grandson
Bilaam. (The stones are the wall that the donkey press Bilaam’s leg against.
48 And Laban said: 'This heap is
witness between me and thee this day.' Therefore, was the name of it called
Galeed;
The border stones or witness stones.
49 and Mizpah, for he said: 'The
LORD watch between me and thee, when we are absent one from another.
This is a high mountain with a view.
Could be Har HaHor on the Turkish Lebanese Border.
50 If thou shalt afflict my
daughters, and if thou shalt take wives beside my daughters, no man being with
us; see, God is witness betwixt me and thee.' 51 And Laban said to
Jacob: 'Behold this heap, and behold the pillar, which I have set up betwixt me
and thee. 52 This heap be witness, and the pillar be witness, that I
will not pass over this heap to thee, and that thou shalt not pass over this
heap and this pillar unto me, for harm. 53 The God of Abraham, and
the God of Nahor, the God of their father, judge betwixt us.' And Jacob swore
by the Fear of his father Isaac.
Compared to Avraham and his marriage to
Keturah or Lavan’s age when his sons were born, Yacov at 97 is much younger.
Still, he is not interested in more wives.
54 And Jacob offered a sacrifice
in the mountain, and called his brethren to eat bread; and they did eat bread,
and tarried all night in the mountain.
The family and friends
of Lavan were at peace now and left Yacov.
32:1 And early in the morning Laban rose up, and kissed his sons
and his daughters, and blessed them. And Laban departed, and returned unto his
place.
Lavan left and Yacov was now safe from
him and his sons and free to leave for Eretz Yisrael.
2 And Jacob went on his way, and
the angels of God met him.
The Guardian Angels of Gallus have
left Yacov and now he is being protected by the Angels of the land of Canaan or
the future Eretz Yisrael.
3 And Jacob said when he saw
them: 'This is God's camp.' And he called the name of that place
Mahanaim.
The modern place is by
the Yacov Bridge to the Golan Heights near Chatzor HaGalil. My impression from
this story it would be more between Turkey and Lebanon or Turkey and Syria.
Nobody knows today the exact place. I just feel that the future Eretz Yisrael
will be much further north of this area.
Four
Perfect Pebbles by Rivka Rhonda Robinson
https://www.aish.com/ho/p/Four-Perfect-Pebbles-Clinging-to-Hope-in-Bergen-Belsen.html?s=ss2
As a 9-year-old in a German concentration camp in
1943, Marion
Blumenthal Lazan had none of the staples children normally took for granted,
like paper, pencils, books or games. But she took comfort
in her active imagination and four perfect pebbles.
Life in Bergen-Belsen was terribly bleak, with not a tree,
flower or blade of grass in sight. Starvation, disease and death were her daily
companions.
To keep despair at bay Marion created imaginary games. She
decided that finding four pebbles of about the same size and shape would mean
the four members of her family would all survive – her parents Walter and Ruth,
her brother Albert, and she.
The game provided relief because she always came out a
winner. “I always found my four pebbles. I made it my business to find them. I
cheated all the time. When I found them, I put them in a safe place,” she
admitted to an Atlanta audience during Intown Jewish Academy’s Holocaust
Remembrance Series.
“This game gave me something to hold onto, some distant
hope.”
Hope barely breathed in Bergen-Belsen, where approximately
50,000 people died at the hands of the Nazis – mostly Jews, including the young
diarist Anne Frank. Overcrowding, poor sanitary conditions, and a lack of
adequate food, water and shelter led to typhus, tuberculosis, dysentery and
other disease outbreaks.
As children
we saw things that no one, no matter what age, should ever have to see.
Lazan existed on a slice of bread and hot watery soup with
grisly meat and turnip and potato peels every day. “Bread was later given to us
just once a week, and only if our so-called quarters were neat and in order.
Our birthday present to one another was that little piece of bread we had saved
up from the previous week.”
One day promised heartier fare. Her mother had smuggled
potatoes and salt out of the kitchen where she worked. She proceeded to cook
soup in secret on the bunk she shared with Marion. All of a sudden, German
guards entered for a surprise inspection.
As Lazan relates: “I was on the bunk with my mother trying
to hide and shield what she was doing. Soup was simmering, just about finished.
In our rush to hide that setup, the boiling soup spilled on my leg. We had been
taught self-discipline and self-control the hard way. I knew if I cried out it
would cost us our lives.”
Their dark, crowded barrack resulted in other perils. It
often led inmates to trip and fall over dead bodies. “As children we saw things
that no one, no matter what age, should ever have to see,” Lazan says.
The stage was set in 1935 when Nazi Germany enacted the
Nuremberg Laws, thereby providing a legal framework for the systematic
persecution of Jews. They stripped Jews of citizenship, barred marriage and
relations between Jews and other Germans, prohibited Jews from flying the
German flag, and more.
The vise was tightening for families like the Blumenthals,
who lived above their shoe store. “It was then that my parents decided to make
arrangements to leave the country,” says Lazan.
“My grandparents, who were in their late 70s and ill,
refused to leave their home. They could not see the urgency. My grandparents passed
away in 1938, within just 11 days of each other. Soon thereafter we received
our papers for immigration to America.”
On Nov. 9, 1938, Nazis ransacked the family apartment
during Kristallnacht, or the Night of
Broken Glass, when Germans unleashed pogroms on Jews across the country.
They seized Lazan’s father, taking him to the German
concentration camp Buchenwald. Miraculously, they released him three weeks
later because the family’s papers were in order to emigrate to America.
“We were forced to sell both our home and our business for
a fraction of their worth. In January 1939 we left for Holland, from where we
were to sail for the United States,” says Lazan. “For almost nine months, while
awaiting our quota number from the American State Department, my parents were
assigned to take care of some 125 children. They had been sent by their parents
from various parts of Europe to escape from the Nazis.”
Lazan claims Anne Frank as a kindred spirit, although the
two girls never met. Both born in Germany, they also lived in Holland. “Mine
is a story Anne Frank might have told had she survived. It is also a story with
a message of perseverance, determination, faith and above all, hope.”
In December 1939, Lazan’s family was deported to the
detention camp of Westerbork in Holland to await their voyage to America. In
May 1940 – just one month before the planned departure – the Germans invaded
Holland. The family couldn’t escape, and their belongings perished as Germans
bombed Rotterdam’s harbor.
Unfortunately, now they were awaiting deportation to a
concentration camp. Finally, the Tuesday came in January 1944 when they had to
march down a railroad platform known as the “Boulevard des Misères,” or
Boulevard of Miseries. When they saw the cattle cars to board, the family
feared the worst.
“I remember it was a bitter cold, pitch black, rainy night
when we arrived at our destination, concentration camp Bergen-Belsen in
Germany. We were pulled and dragged out of the cattle cars and greeted by the
German guards who were shouting at us and threatening us with their weapons and
with the most vicious attack dogs by their sides. I was a very frightened
9-year-old, and to this day I still feel fear whenever I see a German
shepherd.”
“Of the total 120,000 men, women and children that departed
Westerbork,” Lazan adds, “102,000 were doomed never to return.”
The miseries of captivity in Bergen-Belsen included
frostbite from roll-calls at times lasting from early morning until late at
night without food, water or protective clothing.
The population was dying off rapidly, but not nearly fast
enough to satisfy the Nazis, according to Lazan. “It was decided to send three
trainloads of our people to Eastern Europe, to the extermination camps and the
gas chambers. After 14 days of this surreal and horrifying journey, the German
guards stormed frantically through the train seeking civilian clothing so they
would not be recognized by the allies. We knew then the war was coming to an
end. The Russian army liberated our train and led us to a nearby farm village
in Eastern Germany.”
By then Lazan was 10½ years old and weighed 35 pounds, or
16 kilos. All four family members were ill with typhus, and her father died
from it just weeks after liberation – after surviving 6 1/2 years in refugee,
transit and concentration camps.
The children and their mother gradually recuperated and
started life anew in America on the eve of Passover 1948. Two months after high
school graduation in Peoria, Illinois, Marion married Nathaniel Lazan, whom she
had met in synagogue on Yom Kippur. He later became an Air Force pilot. They
celebrated their 68th anniversary in August 2021 with three adult children,
nine grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Marion’s memoir, Four Perfect Pebbles, has been
translated into German, Dutch, Hebrew, French and Japanese. She is grateful the
story will live on for future generations. Although she has spoken to 1.5
million students and adults over these past 20 years, the effort always drains
her.
But she reasons, “Today’s generation will be the very last
that will hear these stories firsthand. When we are not here any longer,
today’s youth will have to bear witness. As difficult as it is, the horror of
the Shoah must be taught. Only then can we guard it from ever happening again.
“Each of us must do everything in our power to prevent such
hatred, destruction and terror from recurring. We can begin by having love,
respect, tolerance and compassion towards one another, regardless of the
religious belief, regardless of the color of our skin, regardless of the
national origin. This respect toward one another must begin in our homes.”
Thomas Edison’s Mother: The Power of Words by Rabbi
Efrem Goldberg
https://www.aish.com/sp/pg/Thomas-Edisons-Mother-The-Power-of-Words.html?s=hp1
The story is told that
one day, as a small child, Thomas Edison came home from school and gave a paper
to his mother. He said, “Mom, my teacher gave this paper to me and told me only
you are to read it. What does it say?”
Her eyes welled with
tears as she read the letter out loud to her child: “Your son is a genius. This
school is too small for him and doesn’t have good enough teachers to train him.
Please teach him yourself.”
Many years after
Edison’s mother had died, he became one of the greatest inventors of the
century. When he was going through a closet he found the folded letter from his
old teacher. He opened it and found that the true message written on the
letter: “Your son is mentally deficient. We cannot let him attend our school
anymore. He is expelled.”
Edison then wrote in
his diary: “Thomas A. Edison was a mentally deficient child whose mother turned
him into the genius of the century.”
“Thomas A. Edison was a mentally deficient child
whose mother turned him into the genius of the century.”
While the details of
this story are likely not accurate, it is indeed documented that Edison was called
“addled” by his teacher who determined that he should no longer remain in
school. His mother became his most enthusiastic champion, and only because of
her encouragement, belief and constant kind words did Thomas Edison become the
great inventor.
I recently wrote about
the Olympian Penny Oleksiak, whose teacher told
her to give up swimming and focus on school. Penny ignored that voice of
negativity to become a decorated Olympian and I encouraged us to silence the
voice of doubt in our own heads. The article resonated for many who identified
with debilitating feelings and thoughts of self-doubt, but it also struck a
chord with some who shared their own stories with me of having to overcome
hurtful and insensitive comments of influential people in their lives who
doubted them. I share just one of them with permission:
Hi Rabbi,
Your article about the
Olympic swimmer caused tears in my eyes. In high school my daughter was placed
in the “dumb classes.” She was not dumb at all. She went through some health
challenges and after graduation ended up having surgery at a renowned Institute
in Miami. No one believed her. Not one faculty member. Due to a health challenge
she wasn’t able to excel. She even gave the school a letter from the doctor. Go
figure!
Fast forward: her
guidance counselor didn’t send her transcripts to the college of her choice.
She was told she would only be accepted at a community college. But my daughter
fought hard to get those transcripts sent. Well, she got into the school. She
worked closely with Hillel to implement an amazing program.
Fast forward again:
she graduated Magna Cum Laude. I’m a very private person regarding my kids and
their amazing accomplishments but I have to tell you she was accepted to
graduate school at a top Ivy League school. If we weren’t so private, we would
probably shout out to those faculty members who didn’t believe her nor believed
in her. She will never forget the experience as it resonates deeply but I only
hope that it drove her to be successful!
Thank you for bringing
this to light.
Proverbs tells us
“Death and Life are in the hands of the tongue” (18:21). We are given an
extraordinary gift to communicate and express our ideas, thoughts, and
feelings. The power of speech is not just a gift, it is an awesome
responsibility. Words can be weapons that diminish and destroy, or they can be
tools and instruments that create, encourage and uplift.
Teachers, parents and
really all of us have to remember that using hurtful language can create injury
and pain that last longer and do more damage than a physical punch or blow. But
the opposite is also true. Complimenting, encouraging, expressing faith and
belief in someone can give them the self-confidence they need to breakthrough
and succeed.
We interact with all
kinds of people every day. Do we cut people down, make them feel small or
insignificant, and fill them with self-doubt, or do we talk to them in a way
that makes them feel encouraged, boosts their confidence, and improves their
day?
The choice is ours.
Veteran’s Day Evading Hitler and winning Silver Star
by Michael Gold
Bronx
native Harry Zeller was headed to medical school in Vienna in 1933, because he
couldn’t get into one in America. Being Jewish was an obvious disadvantage at
the time. Despite his excellent grades at City College of New York, medical
school quotas made it extremely difficult for Jews to get in.
On
the ship to Vienna, Harry — who was my uncle — got a telegram from his mother.
Adolf Hitler had just become chancellor of Germany. It wasn’t a particularly
good time to be Jewish in neighboring Austria.
His
mother’s telegram said that he needed to get off the boat. Harry disembarked
when the ship reached England, and planned to figure out his next move.
He
somehow obtained a seat at a medical school in Scotland, and upon graduation,
he wore a full Scottish nobleman’s outfit, complete with kilt and tall fur hat.
Then he traveled back to the US and enlisted in the army before Pearl Harbor.
In
October 1943, Captain Zeller was sent overseas to England as a medical corpsman
and field surgeon, as part of the preparation for the invasion of France. Harry
wrote letters to his family at least once a week — sometimes more when
conditions permitted.
Unknown
to me until recently, Harry’s family kept all his letters from the war. Once I
found out about them, I read through them all.
Captain
Zeller sent a letter home from France on November 23, 1944, where he commented
on German morale: “Their faith in Hitler is comparable to a religion, and they
don’t know when they’re licked.”
On
November 30, Harry wrote that he had been awarded the Silver Star, the
third-highest military decoration.
On
the night of August 30, after Paris had been liberated, Captain Zeller was
stationed in a building near Saint Denis. His Silver Star citation reads:
When an explosion occurred in a
room on the ground floor, which was being used by an infantry unit, Captain
Zeller, Battalion Surgeon, 955th Artillery Battalion, responded immediately to
a call for medical aid. He treated a seriously wounded infantryman who had
managed to get outside the building before collapsing.
Upon learning from the man, when
he [was] revived, that there were two other men in the room where the explosion
occurred, Captain Zeller, though warned that the room was mined and
booby-trapped, disregarded his personal safety as he hastened into the dark
room with only a flashlight for illumination.
There he was able to save the life
of one of the men who had already become unconscious from the loss of blood.
The other had succumbed when Captain Zeller reached him. The gallant and quick
work of Captain Zeller, who acted against all warnings, reflects great credit
upon himself and is in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States
Army.
By
late April 1945, the Americans were in pursuit of the remnants of the German
army in Czechoslovakia. Major Zeller sarcastically called them, “Hitler’s super
army.”
They
came upon a concentration camp there. Harry wrote to his family: “The
atrocities you speak of are much worse than anyone can imagine, with its
crematoria, gas chambers. … Human ashes were sold for five marks a box to
German civilians.”
That
was one of the few horrific details that Harry wrote about. Information about
soldiers maimed and killed, German war crimes, and the war’s overall
devastation was generally censored by the Army.
Thanks
to his letters, we have some memories of his experiences.
Harry
Zeller — rejected by American medical schools because he was Jewish — had shown
valor in combat, risked his life to aid injured men in a building mined with
explosives, and helped save the lives of countless American soldiers attacked
by the Nazi army.
Despite
the bitterness he must have felt about American antisemitism, Harry
patriotically enlisted in the Army and helped our armed forces win the war in
Europe.
My
cousin still has Harry’s Silver Star, pinned under glass, in a wood frame on a
wall in his house.
