Parsha Lech Lecha Part 1
Parsha Beresheis ended
in the choosing of Noach. Now after 20 generations, Avram comes on the scene to
bring back people to the ways and worship of G-D. He will as stated in Avos
reap the rewards for all 20 generations of corruption, sin and war with the
CREATOR and our purpose on this earth.
12:1 Now
the LORD said unto Abram: 'Get thee out of thy country, and from thy kindred,
and from thy father's house, unto the land that I will show
thee. 2 And I will make of thee a great nation, and I will bless
thee, and make thy name great; and be thou a blessing. 3 And I will
bless them that bless thee, and him that curses thee will I curse; and in thee
shall all the families of the earth be blessed.'
Avram was promised a country, wealth and a large number
of offspring! This is not the normal way for a man traveling across country.
Usually trips cost money and one does not get anything like this.
4 So Abram went, as the LORD had spoken unto him;
and Lot went with him; and Abram was seventy and five years old when he
departed out of Haran. 5 And Abram took Sarai his wife, and Lot his
brother's son, and all their substance that they had gathered, and the souls
that they had gotten in Haran; and they went forth to go into the land of
Canaan; and into the land of Canaan they came. 6 And Abram passed
through the land unto the place of Shechem, unto the terebinth of Moreh. And
the Canaanite was then in the land. 7 And the LORD appeared unto
Abram, and said: 'Unto thy seed will I give this land'; and he built there an
altar unto the LORD, who appeared unto him.
Thanking HASHEM for the
souls, the land and future promises.
8 And he removed from thence unto the mountain on
the east of Beth-el, and pitched his tent, having Beth-el on the west, and Ai
on the east; and he built there an altar unto the LORD, and called upon the
name of the LORD. 9 And Abram journeyed, going on still toward the
South.
Avraham is sanctifying places
in Eretz Yisrael. While I was building my house, I took my then Chavruta (now
Rabbi) Boaz Baruch Shlita to learn a little Gemara Shabbos in my future basement
to establish Torah Learning before the Yishuv started and for guarding Shabbos.
You might say that I learned this from Avraham Avinu.
10 And
there was a famine in the land; and Abram went down into Egypt to sojourn
there; for the famine was sore in the land. 11 And it came to pass,
when he was come near to enter into Egypt, that he said unto Sarai his wife:
'Behold now, I know that thou art a fair woman to look upon. 12 And
it will come to pass, when the Egyptians shall see thee, that they will say:
This is his wife; and they will kill me, but thee they will keep
alive. 13 Say, I pray thee, thou art my sister; that it may be well
with me for thy sake, and that my soul may live because of thee.'
There are Rabbis with a
number of questions here. Why go down to Egypt? Why was there so little faith
in HASHEM as to go to Egypt and then say ‘She is my sister’. But I question neither.
Perhaps he did not know of Avimelech and the wells in his area and most likely
the custom of Kings were to have women after their husbands were killed. Even
as late as the 1990’s Saddam Hussein would look at a wife of one of his
generals, the general would divorce her for the sake of his head.
14 And
it came to pass, that, when Abram was come into Egypt, the Egyptians beheld the
woman that she was very fair. 15 And the princes of Pharaoh saw her,
and praised her to Pharaoh; and the woman was taken into Pharaoh's house. 16 And
he dealt well with Abram for her sake; and he had sheep, and oxen, and
he-asses, and men-servants, and maid-servants, and she-asses, and
camels. 17 And the LORD plagued Pharaoh and his house with great
plagues because of Sarai Abram's wife. 18 And Pharaoh called Abram,
and said: 'What is this that thou hast done unto me? why didst thou not tell me
that she was thy wife? 19 Why did you say: She is my sister? so that
I took her to be my wife; now therefore behold thy wife, take her, and go thy
way.'
Avraham was used to the
norms of Nimrod in Iraq and Turkey (Haran) and feared this behavior.
20 And
Pharaoh gave men charge concerning him; and they brought him on the way, and
his wife, and all that he had.
Pharaoh realized that he
thought all kings were like Iraqi Kings.
13:1 And Abram went up out of Egypt, he, and his wife, and all
that he had, and Lot with him, into the South. 2 And Abram was very
rich in cattle, in silver, and in gold. 3 And he went on his journeys
from the South even to Beth-el, unto the place where his tent had been at the
beginning, between Beth-el and Ai; 4 unto the place of the altar,
which he had made there at the first; and Abram called there on the name of the
LORD.
HASHEM had promised him the
land, wealth and offspring. Now he had two out of three.
5 And Lot also, who went with
Abram, had flocks, and herds, and tents. 6 And the land was not able
to bear them, that they might dwell together; for their substance was great, so
that they could not dwell together. 7 And there was a strife between
the herdsmen of Abram's cattle and the herdsmen of Lot's cattle. And the
Canaanite and the Perizzite dwelt then in the land. 8 And Abram said
unto Lot: 'Let there be no strife, I pray thee, between me and thee, and between
my herdsmen and thy herdsmen; for we are brethren. 9 Is not the whole
land before thee? separate thyself, I pray thee, from me; if thou wilt take the
left hand, then I will go to the right; or if thou take the right hand, then I
will go to the left.'
Even though the land is physically
large enough for both, Lot is not muzzling his cattle and behaving poorly by
taking fruit of a land that will be his (according to his belief as Avram is
childless). Avram loves everybody even Canaanites and respects all.
10 And Lot lifted up his eyes,
and beheld all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere,
before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the garden of the LORD, like
the land of Egypt, as thou go unto Zoar. 11 So Lot chose him all the
plain of the Jordan; and Lot journeyed east; and they separated themselves the
one from the other.
Sort of the lure of the
worse of Las Vegas there and his Yetzer loves it along with plenty of springs
of water for his cattle.
12 Abram dwelt in the land of
Canaan, and Lot dwelt in the cities of the Plain, and moved his tent as far as
Sodom.
According to a Medrash
he had previously been involved in export/import from Sodom and now was invited
to be a Judge there.
13 Now the men of Sodom were
wicked and sinners against the LORD exceedingly.
Melech Shlomo wrote in
Koheles: “There is nothing new under the sun.” Do you think that WOKE and
LGBQTIA (they recently added on more nonsense) is new? Bestiality was also
there in Sodom but then again, the wicked in our generation are just getting
started.
14 And the LORD said unto Abram,
after that Lot was separated from him: 'Lift up now thine eyes, and look from
the place where thou art, northward and southward and eastward and
westward; 15 for all the land which thou see, to thee will I give it,
and to thy seed forever.
Even though Avram is
childless, he has now separated from Lot and promised that he will have an heir
besides Lot.
16 And I will make thy seed as
the dust of the earth; so that if a man can number the dust of the earth, then
shall thy seed also be numbered.
Your children will be
numerous.
17 Arise, walk through the land in
the length of it and in the breadth of it; for unto thee will I give it.'
So Avram walked the
land.
18 And Abram moved his tent, and
came and dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and built there
an altar unto the LORD.
In the heart of Israel
close to the modern Schem but Schem would only be born one generation (or two)
after Yacov as Yacov became a father around the age of 85.
14:1 And it came to pass in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar,
Arioch king of Ellasar, Chedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of
Goiim, 2 that they made war with Bera king of Sodom, and with Birsha
king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, and Shemeber king of Zeboiim, and the
king of Bela--the same is Zoar. 3 All these came as allies unto the
vale of Siddim--the same is the Salt Sea. 4 Twelve years they served
Chedorlaomer, and in the thirteenth year they rebelled.
This is similar to what
will happen in Gog and Magog.
5 And in the fourteenth year came
Chedorlaomer and the kings that were with him, and smote the Rephaim in
Ashteroth-karnaim, and the Zuzim in Ham, and the Emim in Shaveh-kiriathaim, 6 and
the Horites in their mount Seir, unto El-paran, which is by the
wilderness.
I am uncertain if
Chedorlaomer was Nimrod or a subservient King or general of his.
7 And they turned back, and came
to En-mishpat--the same is Kadesh--and smote all the country of the Amalekites,
and also the Amorites, that dwelt in Hazazon-tamar. 8 And there went
out the king of Sodom, and the king of Gomorrah, and the king of Admah, and the
king of Zeboiim, and the king of Bela--the same is Zoar; and they set the
battle in array against them in the vale of Siddim;
Amalek was three generations
after Esav but since at the time of Avram, there was no biblical name for the
place, the Torah tells what is known in Torah Times.
9 against Chedorlaomer king of
Elam, and Tidal king of Goiim, and Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of
Ellasar; four kings against the five. 10 Now the vale of Siddim was
full of slime pits; and the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, and they fell
there, and they that remained fled to the mountain.
They fell into a giant
sinkhole and were saved and then they believed that Avram could be rescued from
the furnace.
11 And they took all the goods of
Sodom and Gomorrah, and all their victuals, and went their
way. 12 And they took Lot, Abram's brother's son, who dwelt in Sodom,
and his goods, and departed. 13 And there came one that had escaped,
and told Abram the Hebrew--now he dwelt by the terebinths of Mamre the Amorite,
brother of Eshcol, and brother of Aner; and these were confederate with
Abram. 14 And when Abram heard that his brother was taken captive, he
led forth his trained men, born in his house, three hundred and eighteen, and
pursued as far as Dan.

15 And he divided himself against
them by night, he and his servants, and smote them, and pursued them unto
Hobah, which is on the left hand of Damascus. 16 And he brought back
all the goods, and also brought back his brother Lot, and his goods, and the

The soldiers and army in a rout fled
leaving everything so as to delay the enemy from murdering them in their panic.
But this is what Avram wanted, Lot and the people with their wealth.
17 And the king of Sodom went out
to meet him, after his return from the slaughter of Chedorlaomer and the kings
that were with him, at the vale of Shaveh--the same is the King's Vale.
Having been saved from the sink hole
miraculously he believed in the miracles of Avram.
18 And Melchizedek king of Salem
brought forth bread and wine; and he was priest of God the Most
High. 19 And he blessed him, and said: 'Blessed be Abram of God Most
High, Maker of heaven and earth; 20 and blessed be God the Most High,
who hath delivered thine enemies into thy hand.' And he gave him a tenth of
all.
Melchizedek means “Righteous King” and
is identified with Shem ben Noach who lived 600 years. The flood was in the
year 1656 and people left the Teva in 1657. Shem was 101 at this time. Noah was
still alive when Avram was born as he lived until 2006. Avram was born in 1948
and was 58 when Noach died. Now Shem was 392 years when Avram was born and
Avram is sometime between the age of 75 and 99 when Sodom was destroyed. Shem
was the Gadol HaDor and very active through Yitzchak’s life and in Yacov’s life
with Ever.
21 And the king of Sodom said
unto Abram: 'Give me the persons, and take the goods to
thyself.' 22 And Abram said to the king of Sodom: 'I have lifted up
my hand unto the LORD, God Most High, Maker of heaven and
earth, 23 that I will not take a thread nor a shoe-latchet nor aught
that is thine, lest thou shouldest say: I have made Abram
rich; 24 save only that which the young men have eaten, and the
portion of the men which went with me, Aner, Eshcol, and Mamre, let them take
their portion.'
I did this only for the Mitzvah
of rescuing my Nephew and don’t need anything else and no one will say that I
became rich on their possessions. Part 2 Ble Neder next week.

or Not on My Watch from Nesli
I lost the names of the people but the main thing is the Miracle.
The project was deep sea fishing with nets that are secured below. The fish
enter them and become trapped.
Day one of our story tells of two divers who check that the lines
are secure. They experience extra strong currents outside the fishnets and
secure the lines. These divers recommend securing the nets to the base that due
to the late hour must be done the next day.
The job is not supposed to take too long so one diver will take the
outside of the net without Oxygen and one diver the inside. The inner diver has
gotten entangled in the net and it will be days until the fish are pulled up.
Meantime something has made the foreman uneasy and he decides to go
out to check the nets. He knows that there is a diver in the net without a tank
who has not come up. He begins to peer down into the net to see where the diver
could be. He begins lifting the very heavy net himself, he sees the diver
entangled and with all his strength pulls. He has a sharp knife of him and with
one hand holds the diver who is not breathing and with the other cuts the net.
He drags the diver to the docking area close to the net and starts performing
CPR. He asks someone to call for a water ambulance. He then tries forcing
breath into the diver but his jaw is locked. He gets hold of a large screw
driver and breaks a tooth or two but pries the locked mouth open.
He now is doing full CPR and all the time in his head he is saying
“Not on my watch”. I don’t want to lose a man on my watch.
The ambulance arrives with a defibrillator and after a few times
manages to restart the silent heart. The diver is ferried to shore.
After being kept in a medical coma for a day or two the diver is
woken up. Will there be major brain damage from lack of oxygen? Miraculously,
the diver awakens and except for a few damaged teeth, there is no damage.
The two have continued to meet at least once a year for the last
30years on the rebirth anniversary and have become good friends.
