Parsha Lech Lecha Part 2
Avram has received two
of three things promised him by G-D. They are Eretz Canaan and riches. The
third thing promised to him is children numerous like the grains of sand by the
sea. Avram has walked the land even if at this time he does not rule it yet.
15:1 After these things the word of the LORD came unto Abram in a
vision, saying: 'Fear not, Abram, I am thy shield, thy reward shall be
exceeding great.' 2 And Abram said: 'O Lord GOD, what wilt Thou give
me, seeing I go hence childless, and he that shall be possessor of my house is
Eliezer of Damascus?'
When we shall read of Akedah Yitzchak
we will read about the two ‘youths’ Na’arim in Hebrew. They will stay behind
with the Donkey. One is Eliezer and the other is Yishmael. Eliezer the youth is
older than 51year old Yishmael at that time and Yitzchak is 37 per the Medrash.
At our point the later two have not been born and the old one of Avraham’s
house is Eliezer.
3 And Abram said: 'Behold, to me
Thou hast given no seed, and, lo, one born in my house is to be mine
heir.' 4 And, behold, the word of the LORD came unto him, saying:
'This man shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine
own bowels shall be thine heir.'
An heir will come from your loins.
5 And He brought him forth
abroad, and said: 'Look now toward heaven, and count the stars, if thou be able
to count them'; and He said unto him: 'So shall thy seed be.'
Either the L-RD saw that Avram and
Sarai would be childless according the position of Jupiter at their birth but
Avraham and Sarah at the day of the Bris will have Jupiter in a different point
in the sky and Avraham will be the millions of Yishmaelim and Brahmans from
Keturah a father of many countries.
6 And he believed in the LORD;
and He counted it to him for righteousness. 7 And He said unto him:
'I am the LORD that brought thee out of Ur of the Chaldees, to give thee this
land to inherit it.'
Similar to Yisro “I am the L-RD your
G-D who took you out of the land of Egypt…” at the Asera Dibros.
8 And he said: 'O Lord GOD,
whereby shall I know that I shall inherit it?' 9 And He said unto
him: 'Take Me a heifer of three years old, and a she-goat of three years old,
and a ram of three years old, and a turtle-dove, and a young
pigeon.' 10 And he took him all these, and divided them in the midst,
and laid each half over against the other; but the birds divided he
not. 11 And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram
drove them away. 12 And it came to pass, that, when the sun was going
down, a deep sleep fell upon Abram; and, lo, a dread, even a great darkness,
fell upon him. 13 And He said unto Abram: 'Know of a surety that thy
seed shall be a stranger in a land that is not theirs, and shall serve them;
and they shall afflict them four hundred years; 14 and also that
nation, whom they shall serve, will I judge; and afterward shall they come out
with great substance. 15 But thou shalt go to thy fathers in peace;
thou shalt be buried in a good old age. 16 And in the fourth
generation they shall come back hither; for the iniquity of the Amorite is not
yet full.'
According to the commentaries this
occurred to Avraham at the age of 70 when the bris among the pieces occurred.
Avraham’s seed will only inherit the land when the iniquity of the Amorite is
complete (In the days of Moshe).
17 And it came to pass, that,
when the sun went down, and there was thick darkness, behold a smoking furnace,
and a flaming torch that passed between these pieces. 18 In that day
the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying: 'Unto thy seed have I given this
land, from the river of Egypt unto the great river, the river Euphrates;
He must have walked or all the way
north to the Iraqi or Iraq-Iran border.
19 the Kenite, and the Kenizzite,
and the Kadmonite, 20 and the Hittite, and the Perizzite, and the
Rephaim, 21 and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Girgashite,
and the Jebusite.'
Only 7 of the 10 nations
mentioned were conquered in the original conquest of Eretz Yisrael. So either
they moved, died out or will be conquered and certainly their land in the
future.
16:1 Now Sarai Abram's wife bore him no children; and she had a
handmaid, an Egyptian, whose name was Hagar. 2 And Sarai said unto
Abram: 'Behold now, the LORD hath restrained me from bearing; go in, I pray
thee, unto my handmaid; it may be that I shall be built up through her.' And
Abram hearkened to the voice of Sarai.
Hagar would be a surrogate mother for
Sarah’s adopted child but unfortunately a wild ass of a man with his hand on
everything did not meet the standard.
3 And Sarai Abram's wife took
Hagar the Egyptian, her handmaid, after Abram had dwelt ten years in the land
of Canaan, and gave her to Abram her husband to be his wife. 4 And he
went in unto Hagar, and she conceived; and when she saw that she had conceived,
her mistress was despised in her eyes. 5 And Sarai said unto Abram:
'My wrong be upon thee: I gave my handmaid into thy bosom; and when she saw
that she had conceived, I was despised in her eyes: the LORD judge between me
and thee.'
She thinks herself more important as she as become pregnant.
6 But Abram said unto Sarai:
'Behold, thy maid is in thy hand; do to her that which is good in thine eyes.'
And Sarai dealt harshly with her, and she fled from her face.
Sarah gave her what she thought she
deserved for her rebellion.
7 And the angel of the LORD found
her by a fountain of water in the wilderness, by the fountain in the way to
Shur. 8 And he said: 'Hagar, Sarai's handmaid, whence come thou? and
whither go thou?' And she said: 'I flee from the face of my mistress
Sarai.' 9 And the angel of the LORD said unto her: 'Return to thy
mistress, and submit thyself under her hands.' 10 And the angel of
the LORD said unto her: 'I will greatly multiply thy seed, that it shall not be
numbered for multitude. 11 And the angel of the LORD said unto her:
'Behold, thou art with child, and shalt bear a son; and thou shalt call his
name Ishmael, because the LORD hath heard thy affliction. 12 And he
shall be a wild ass of a man: his hand shall be against every man, and every
man's hand against him; and he shall dwell in the face of all his
brethren.'
When an Angel or G-D speaks to you,
you listen and obey and that is exactly what Hagar did but she will become a
mother-grandmother of a multitude.
13 And she called the name of the
LORD that spoke unto her, Thou art a God of seeing; for she said: 'Have I even
here seen Him that sees Me?' 14 Wherefore the well was called
'Beer-lahai-roi; meaning the well of the living (G-D) who sees me behold, it is between Kadesh and
Bered. 15 And Hagar bore Abram a son; and Abram called the name of
his son, whom Hagar bore, Ishmael. 16 And Abram was fourscore and six
years old, when Hagar bore Ishmael to Abram.
Finally, Avram has a
heir and a son at that.
17:1 And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD
appeared to Abram, and said unto him: 'I am God Almighty; walk before Me, and
be thou wholehearted. 2 And I will make My covenant between Me and
thee, and will multiply thee exceedingly.' 3 And Abram fell on his
face; and God talked with him, saying: 4 'As for Me, behold, My
covenant is with thee, and thou shalt be the father of a multitude of
nations. 5 Neither shall thy name any more be called Abram, but thy
name shall be Abraham; for the father of a multitude of nations have I made
thee. 6 And I will make thee exceeding fruitful, and I will make
nations of thee, and kings shall come out of thee. 7 And I will
establish My covenant between Me and thee and thy seed after thee throughout
their generations for an everlasting covenant, to be a God unto thee and to thy
seed after thee. 8 And I will give unto thee, and to thy seed after
thee, the land of thy sojournings, all the land of Canaan, for an everlasting
possession; and I will be their God.' 9 And God said unto Abraham:
'And as for thee, thou shalt keep My covenant, thou, and thy seed after thee
throughout their generations.
I was watching a Dr. Oz - Donald Trump
Rally in PA and he invited an elderly preacher Kenneth Copeland to speak. He
told a story of George Washington at Valley Forge PA where he saw the Jewish
Immigrant soldier lighting a Menorah and was encourage (from a past Blogspot
story) and how he remembered the Maccabees as if it were a few years ago.
General Washington got down on his knees and read this passage. He prayed to
G-D and pledged you will be our G-D and we will be your people. For him, the
Jewish Soldier had made Avraham and the Bris relevant.
10 This is My covenant, which ye
shall keep, between Me and you and thy seed after thee: every male among you
shall be circumcised. 11 And ye shall be circumcised in the flesh of
your foreskin; and it shall be a token of a covenant betwixt Me and
you. 12 And he that is eight days old shall be circumcised among you,
every male throughout your generations, he that is born in the house, or bought
with money of any foreigner, that is not of thy seed. 13 He that is
born in thy house, and he that is bought with thy money, must needs be
circumcised; and My covenant shall be in your flesh for an everlasting covenant. 14 And
the uncircumcised male who is not circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin,
that soul shall be cut off from his people; he hath broken My covenant.'
Circumcision is the Covenant (Bris)
between the L-RD and Avraham’s seed.
15 And God said unto Abraham: 'As
for Sarai thy wife, thou shalt not call her name Sarai, but Sarah shall her
name be. 16 And I will bless her, and moreover I will give thee a son
of her; yea, I will bless her, and she shall be a mother of nations; kings of
peoples shall be of her.' 17 Then Abraham fell upon his face, and
laughed, and said in his heart: 'Shall a child be born unto him that is a
hundred years old? and shall Sarah, that is ninety years old, bear?'
He laughed out of joy and not thinking
this a jest. He was also smiling of the greatness of the miracle that was about
to occur.
18 and I will establish My covenant
with him for an everlasting covenant for his seed after him. 20 And
as for Ishmael, I have heard thee; behold, I have blessed him, and will make
him fruitful, and will multiply him exceedingly; twelve princes shall he beget,
and I will make him a great nation.
Avraham prays for Yishmael and is
joyful about twelve nations to come from his limbs.
21 But My covenant will I
establish with Isaac, whom Sarah shall bear unto thee at this set time in the
next year.'
Next year at this time, 15th
of the month of Aviv aka Nissan.
22 And He left off talking with
him, and God went up from Abraham. 23 And Abraham took Ishmael his
son, and all that were born in his house, and all that were bought with his
money, every male among the men of Abraham's house, and circumcised the flesh
of their foreskin in the selfsame day, as God had said unto him.
Avraham circumcised his household
including slaves like Eliezer and his son Yishmael at the age of 13.
24 And Abraham was ninety years
old and nine, when he was circumcised in the flesh of his
foreskin. 25 And Ishmael his son was thirteen years old, when he was
circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin. 26 In the selfsame day was
Abraham circumcised, and Ishmael his son. 27 And all the men of his
house, those born in the house, and those bought with money of a foreigner,
were circumcised with him.
All is people became circumcised and
holy unto G-D.
Parsha Vayera
18:1 And the LORD appeared unto him by the terebinths of Mamre, as
he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day; 2 and he lifted up
his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood over against him; and when he saw
them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed down to the
earth,
He breaks up a conversation with L-RD
in order to make a Kiddush HASHEM praising and teaching about G-D.
3 and said: 'My lord, if now I
have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy
servant. 4 Let now a little water be fetched, and wash your feet, and
recline yourselves under the tree.
Wash your feet, for idol worshippers
would worship the dust of planet earth.
5 And I will fetch a morsel of
bread, and stay ye your heart; after that ye shall pass on; forasmuch as ye are
come to your servant.' And they said: 'So do, as thou hast said.'
Unlike the promises of a politician,
Avraham offers a morsel of bread and delivers semolina cakes. He will also host
with butter and later a meal with tongue.
6 And Abraham hastened into the
tent unto Sarah, and said: 'Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal,
knead it, and make cakes.' 7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and
fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto the servant; and he hastened
to dress it. 8 And he took curd, and milk, and the calf which he had
dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they
did eat.
Up unto now they sit, talk listen
about HASHEM and act and look like idol worshippers.
9 And they said unto him: 'Where
is Sarah thy wife?' And he said: 'Behold, in the tent.' 10 And He
said: 'I will certainly return unto thee when the season comes around; and, lo,
Sarah thy wife shall have a son.' And Sarah heard in the tent door, which was
behind him.—
He showed Avraham the shadow of the
sun dial and made a mark on the ground.
11 Now Abraham and Sarah were
old, and well stricken in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner
of women.-- 12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying: 'After I am
waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?'
If I at 75 am not the Don Juan lover
boy I was towards my wife decades ago, I can imagine Avraham 25years older. So,
she laughed and her faith in miracles was weak.
13 And the LORD said unto
Abraham: 'Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying: Shall I of a surety bear a child,
who am old? 14 Is anything too hard for the LORD. At the set time I
will return unto thee, when the season cometh round, and Sarah shall have a
son.'
Immediately, Sarah got her period.
15 Then Sarah denied, saying: 'I
laughed not'; for she was afraid. And He said: 'Nay; but thou didst
laugh.'
After getting her period, she realized
that they were angels and she became sore afraid.
16 And the men rose up from
thence, and looked out toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to bring them
on the way. 17 And the LORD said: 'Shall I hide from Abraham that
which I am doing; 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great
and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For
I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household
after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and
justice; to the end that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which He hath
spoken of him.'
We have no indication that Noach
prayed for the wicked of his generation or repentance.
20 And the LORD said: 'Verily,
the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and, verily, their sin is exceeding
grievous. 21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done
altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto Me; and if not, I
will know.' 22 And the men turned from thence, and went toward Sodom;
but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. 23 And Abraham drew near, and
said: 'Wilt Thou indeed sweep away the righteous with the
wicked? 24 Peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city;
wilt Thou indeed sweep away and not forgive the place for the fifty righteous
that are therein?
Now he starts conjoining for the
people of Sodom to save those wicked cities if they have so and so many
righteous.
25 That be far from Thee to do
after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that so the righteous
should be as the wicked; that be far from Thee; shall not the Judge of all the
earth do justly?' 26 And the LORD said: 'If I find in Sodom fifty
righteous within the city, then I will forgive all the place for their
sake.'
If there are 50 Tzadikim in Sodom it
will not be destroyed. Avraham keeps begging for the people of Sodom – 45,
40,30, 20 and just a Minyan of righteous ones.
27 And Abraham answered and said:
'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, who am but dust and
ashes. … 33 And the LORD went His way, as soon as He
had left off speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned unto his place.
He must have thought that in a city as
large as Sodom that there would be 10 righteous to save the city.
Unfortunately, the facts on the ground showed that only Lot was righteous
enough to be saves and his family thought him mad.
19:1 And the two angels came to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the
gate of Sodom; and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he fell down on
his face to the earth;
The Angel Rafael healed Avraham and
his mission was complete. The other two Gavriel to destroy and perhaps Michael
to save Lot and family (whomever wanted to come of his close relatives).
2 and he said: 'Behold now, my
lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night,
and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way.' And they
said: 'Nay; but we will abide in the broad place all night.' 3 And he
urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house;
and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.
Despite the fact that he was in Sodom,
he continue Avram’s hospitality.
4 But before they lay down, the
men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young
and old, all the people from every quarter. 5 And they called unto
Lot, and said unto him: 'Where are the men that came in to thee this night? bring
them out unto us, that we may know them.'
You can choose your friends and never
your relatives but you should go out of your way to find a good neighborhood to
live in and with righteous neighbors.
6 And Lot went out unto them to
the door, and shut the door after him. 7 And he said: 'I pray you, my
brethren, do not so wickedly.
To this day many Arabs will protect
people who come in under their roof.
8 Behold now, I have two
daughters that have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you,
and do ye to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing;
forasmuch as they are come under the shadow of my roof.'
Lot, albeit much more righteous that
Sodom, is willing to give over his virgin daughters to abuse and perhaps death
to save strangers that he knows nothing about. And although I do not fully
grasp this from his oldest daughter will descend Moshiach.
9 And they said: 'Stand back.'
And they said: 'This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs play the
judge; now will we deal worse with thee, than with them.' And they pressed sore
upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door. 10 But the
men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and the door
they shut. 11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the
house with blindness, both small and great; so that they wearied themselves to
find the door.
It is not clear what physically happened
to the men of Sodom that either their retinas burnt out or their brains could
not process light and dark and they by feeling could not find the door to Lot’s
house. Obviously, a miracle that only HASHEM could perform.
12 And the men said unto Lot:
'Hast thou here any besides? son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and
whomsoever thou hast in the city; bring them out of the place; 13 for
we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxed great before the
LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.' 14 And Lot went out,
and spoke unto his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said: 'Up, get
you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy the city.' But he seemed unto
his sons-in-law as one that jested.
Similar to the generation before the Flood,
they thought this was nonsense. IF SOMEHOW I WOULD YELL THE MOSHIACH IS COMING
SOON - OBSERVE SHABBOS ACCORDING TO THE SHULCHAN ARUCH – most people across Yisrael
would think me either mad or jesting and would not listen to me.
15 And when the morning arose,
then the angels hastened Lot, saying: 'Arise, take thy wife, and thy two
daughters that are here; lest thou be swept away in the iniquity of the
city.' 16 But he lingered; and the men laid hold upon his hand, and
upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD
being merciful unto him. And they brought him forth, and set him without the
city.
The two remaining Angels had a tight
schedule to work on. They had to get to the Shachris Prayer in heaven for Netz
(sunrise). See Rashi on the wrestling angel with Yacov.
17 And it came to pass, when they
had brought them forth abroad, that he said: 'Escape for thy life; look not
behind thee, neither stay thou in all the Plain; escape to the mountain, lest
thou be swept away.' 18 And Lot said unto them: 'Oh, not so, my
lord; 19 behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and
thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shown unto me in saving my life;
and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest the evil overtake me, and I
die. 20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a
little one; oh, let me escape thither--is it not a little one?--and my soul
shall live.'
Sodom was 52 years old. How do I know?
Migdal Bavel was Avram was 48years old. Then the Nations spread abroad so it
was in its 52nd year as Avraham was 99 at the Bris. The little city
was in its 51st year as the Hebrew word Na or Nun Aleph is written.
Nun Aleph in Gematria is 51 so with one less year of sinning, the city or perhaps
small village had less sins to Judge.
21 And he said unto him: 'See, I
have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the
city of which thou hast spoken.
The Angels after the pleas of Avraham
and Lot perhaps had enough prayer – power to save the inhabitants with less
sins on their head.
22 Hasten thou, escape thither;
for I cannot do any thing till thou come thither.'--Therefore the name of the
city was called Zoar.-- 23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot
came unto Zoar. 24 Then the LORD caused to rain upon Sodom and upon
Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven;
The precise second that the Angels had
to pray.
25 and He overthrow those cities,
and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew
upon the ground. 26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she
became a pillar of salt.
Lot and his daughters did not look
back and remained in a shelter. Mrs. Lot went out to look back and turned into
salt. My father always thought that the people of Sodom were gathering Radium
or Uranium and the glow that blinded them and the fire and brimstone was the
material hitting critical mass.
27 And Abraham got up early in
the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD. 28 And
he looked out toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the Plain,
and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a
furnace.
Did he see normal smoke or a thermonuclear
mushroom cloud? At this point, he knew that there wasn’t even a Minyan of Righteous
people in Sodom.
29 And it came to pass, when God
destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot
out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot
dwelt. 30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and
his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar; and he dwelt in a
cave, he and his two daughters.
Even though Lot saved Zoar, to be on
the safe side, he would dwell in a cave with his daughters.
31 And the first-born said unto
the younger: 'Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in
unto us after the manner of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our
father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our
father.'
This young woman erroneously thought
that like after the flood they were the only people left on earth.
33 And they made their father
drink wine that night. And the first-born went in, and lay with her father; and
he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 34 And
it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger:
'Behold, I lay yesternight with my father. Let us make him drink wine this
night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our
father.' 35 And they made their father drink wine that
night also. And the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she
lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the
daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And
the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab--the same is the father of
the Moabites unto this day. 38 And the younger, she
also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi--the same is the father of the
children of Ammon unto this day.
The Torah does not pull punches and we
are told what exactly happened. Even though Lot was unaware of what was
happening as he was so inebriated, by sending his children the Public-School System
of Sodom and not Aunt Sara they got educated as a good brainwashed Sodom Child
was educated. It is like getting the worse promiscuity doctrine know to mankind
before modern WOKE theories and the sex education of today.
20:1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the land of the
South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife: 'She is my sister.'
And Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and
said to him: 'Behold, thou shalt die, because of the woman whom thou hast
taken; for she is a man's wife.' 4 Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he
said: 'LORD, wilt Thou slay even a righteous nation? 5 Said he not himself unto me: She is my sister? and she,
even she herself said: He is my brother. In the simplicity of my heart and the
innocency of my hands have I done this.' 6 And God said unto him in the dream: 'Yea, I
know that in the simplicity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I also
withheld thee from sinning against Me. Therefore, suffered I thee not to touch
her. 7 Now therefore restore the man's wife; for he is a
prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live; and if thou restore
her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.' 8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all
his servants, and told all these things in their ears; and the men were sore
afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him: 'What
hast thou done unto us? and wherein have I sinned against thee, that thou hast
brought on me and on my kingdom a great sin? thou hast done deeds unto me that
ought not to be done.'
It could be that Avimelech would have killed
Avraham but before G-D he played the innocent Tzadik.
10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham: 'What did
you see, that thou hast done this thing?' 11 And Abraham said: 'Because I thought: Surely
the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake.
If there is fear of G-D, they will not slay me
but lacking this, they could slay me.
12 And moreover she is indeed my sister, the
daughter of my father, but not the daughter of my mother; and so she became my
wife.
So she is either a half sister or a niece like the
granddaughter of his father via Haran.
13 And it came to pass, when God caused me to
wander from my father's house, that I said unto her: This is thy kindness which
thou shalt show unto me; at every place whither we shall come, say of me: He is
my brother.' 14 And Abimelech took sheep and oxen, and
men-servants and women-servants, and gave them unto Abraham, and restored him
Sarah his wife.
As compensation for taking Sara with lust.
15 And Abimelech said: 'Behold, my land is
before thee: dwell where it pleases thee.' 16 And unto Sarah he said: 'Behold, I have given thy
brother a thousand pieces of silver; behold, it is for thee a covering of the
eyes to all that are with thee; and before all men thou art righted.'
Often a Sheik and tribe will cover up a rape among
the Arabs via compensation.
17 And Abraham prayed unto God; and God healed
Abimelech, and his wife, and his maid-servants; and they bore children. 18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the
house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife.
This reason that there were no births plus a
prophecy dream made him aware of Sarah’s Status.
21:1 And
the LORD remembered Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as He had
spoken. 2 And Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age,
at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called
the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him,
Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days
old, as God had commanded him. 5 And Abraham was a hundred years old,
when his son Isaac was born unto him. 6 And Sarah said: 'God hath
made laughter for me; every one that hears will laugh on account of me.’
They will be full of joy
because of the miracle.
7 And she said: 'Who would have said unto Abraham,
that Sarah should give children suck? for I have borne him a son in his old
age.'
On the day that Yitzchak
was weaned, Sarah gave to suck the children of others to show that Yitzchak was
not a surrogate.
8 And the child grew, and was weaned. And Abraham
made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.
His regular meals were luxurious
I can imagine in my mind like more than a wedding at the Hilton for a rich
family.
9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian,
whom she had borne unto Abraham, making sport. 10 Wherefore she said
unto Abraham: 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this
bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.'
Making sport putting
idols before Yitzchak. So she got fed up with Hagar once and for all.
11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's
sight on account of his son. 12 And God said unto Abraham: 'Let it
not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman;
in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall
seed be called to thee.
For Avraham truly loved
Yishmael and received honor in return.
13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I
make a nation, because he is thy seed.' 14 And Abraham arose up early
in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar,
putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed,
and strayed in the wilderness of Beersheba.
So he sent her away with
sustenance but the water ran low fast.
15 And the water in the bottle was spent, and she
cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16 And she went, and sat her
down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said: 'Let
me not look upon the death of the child.' And she sat over against him, and lifted
up her voice, and wept. 17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and
the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her: 'What ails
thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he
is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast by thy hand; for I
will make him a great nation.'
Again G-D listens to the
boy and promises to Hagar.
19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of
water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad
drink. 20 And God was with the lad, and he grew; and he dwelt in the
wilderness, and became an archer. 21 And he dwelt in the wilderness
of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.
So, she had water and
the two were able to survive. She had enough money to obtain for him a wife.
22 And it came to pass at that time, that
Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his host spoke unto Abraham, saying: 'God
is with thee in all that thou do. 23 Now therefore swear unto me here
by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my
son's son; but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt
do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.'
Avimelech realizes that
his blessings and prosperity have come from Avraham.
24 And Abraham said: 'I will
swear.' 25 And Abraham reproved Abimelech because of the well of
water, which Abimelech's servants had violently taken away. 26 And
Abimelech said: 'I know not who hath done this thing; neither didst thou tell
me, neither yet heard I of it, but to-day.' 27 And Abraham took sheep
and oxen, and gave them unto Abimelech; and they two made a
covenant. 28 And Abraham set seven ewe-lambs of the flock by
themselves. 29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham: 'What mean these
seven ewe-lambs which thou hast set by themselves?' 30 And he said:
'Verily, these seven ewe-lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that it may be a
witness unto me, that I have digged this well.' 31 Wherefore that
place was called Beersheba; because there they swore both of
them. 32 So they made a covenant at Beersheba; and Abimelech rose up,
and Phicol the captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the
Philistines. 33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk-tree in Beersheba, and
called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. 34 And
Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.
So the two was called
the well of the swearing.
22:1 And
it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said unto
him: 'Abraham'; and he said: 'Here am I.' 2 And He said: 'Take now
thy son, thine only son, whom thou love, even Isaac, and get thee into the land
of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains
which I will tell thee of.'
Only son made it unclear if the son would be Yishmael
or Yitzchak as he loved both.
3 And Abraham rose early in the morning, and
saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and
he cleaved the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the
place of which God had told him.
Avraham woke up before
dawn gathered Yitzchak, Yishmael and Eliezer and started towards Har HaMoriah.
4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and
saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men: 'Abide
ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship,
and come back to you.'
Avraham and Yitzchak saw
the clouds of glory on the mount. Yishmael and Eliezer did not so he left them
with the donkey.
6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering,
and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife;
and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spoke unto Abraham
his father, and said: 'My father.' And he said: 'Here am I, my son.' And he
said: 'Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a
burnt-offering?' 8 And Abraham said: 'God will provide Himself the
lamb for a burnt-offering, my son.' So, they went both of them together.
Yitzchak believed that
there would be a lamb to slaughter and did not know or think in his wildest
dream that he was the Korban for Avraham was against human sacrifice.
9 And they came to the place which God had told
him of; and Abraham built the altar there, and laid the wood in order, and
bound Isaac his son, and laid him on the altar, upon the wood. 10 And
Abraham stretched forth his hand, and took the knife to slay his
son. 11 And the angel of the LORD called unto him out of heaven, and
said: 'Abraham, Abraham.' And he said: 'Here am I.' 12 And he said:
'Lay not thy hand upon the lad, neither do thou anything unto him; for now, I
know that thou art a God-fearing man, seeing thou hast not withheld thy son,
thine only son, from Me.'
Suddenly, after setting
up the altar, he found himself bound.
13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and
behold behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went
and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his
son. 14 And Abraham called the name of that place Adonai-jireh; as it
is said to this day: 'In the mount where the LORD is seen.'
Place is called G-D fearing.
And Avraham as he had told to Yitzchak on their ascent that G-D will provide
the ram.
15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham a
second time out of heaven, 16 and said: 'By Myself have I sworn,
saith the LORD, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy
son, thine only son, 17 that in blessing I will bless thee, and in
multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the
sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his
enemies; 18 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be
blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.'
So via Yitzchak, Avraham
received an extra blessing.
19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and
they rose up and went together to Beersheba; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.
So he returned to live
in Beersheva.
20 And
it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying: 'Behold,
Milcah, she also hath borne children unto thy brother Nahor: 21 Uz
his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of
Aram; 22 and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and
Bethuel.' 23 And Bethuel begot Rebekah; these eight did Milcah bear
to Nahor, Abraham's brother.
All this genealogy list
is for the announcement of the birth of Rivka.
24 And his concubine, whose
name was Reumah, she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.
NEVER UNDERESTIMATE THE POWER OF PRAYER
Besides asking for prayers
from my friends, Rabbi Barack Kochavi Shlita, our local Chabad Shaliach, is a
Principal and told me that his school children would say Tehillim for my
operation. The surgeon warned me that there could be problems that I took my
blood thinner in the morning and signed me for a study for the size of a blood
spot study that could appear. I was warned by the nurse that if I felt pain
after the operation to ring for a pain killer immediately.
Our Sages of old used to
ask for prayers from the young children. Tinnukos of Beis Rabban. Well there
was no real blood problem, or pain that was of any consequence. In the morning,
the surgeon looked under the bandage and was very happy. I told her that I
messed up her study with a smile.
For those who prayed for
me thanks. I still have another procedure to go through to try to remove my
A-Fibs and so don’t stop. – Rachamim Pauli

The Best Whiskey of All by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles
s1300SadigoraWhiskeyWater
(ascentofsafed.com)
Leibel and Shoshana
had eleven children, yet they lived a life of ease and comfort. Their tavern
was the most popular in their area, as the expertise of Leibel as a brewer was
head and shoulders above any competition. In the cellar of their house Leibel
had set up a small factory for making whiskey. He labored long hard hours in
the production of his unique whiskey, while his good wife administered the
business side of the tavern.
One day, though,
tragedy struck. Leibel fell severely ill, and in but a short while he returned
his soul to its Maker.
His death left his
widow totally broken-hearted, nor did she understand how she would be able to
obtain the large amounts of food necessary to feed her eleven orphaned
children. The tavern was doomed; she hadn't the faintest idea how to prepare
the whiskey; nor was there anyone to ask. The secrets of its recipe and its
manner of preparation went down into the earth with her husband.
Leibel was accustomed
to visit the 'court' of his Rebbe, Rabbi Avraham-Yaakov of
Sadigora (the son of the 'holy Rhiziner'). Shoshana well remembered how
every time he returned from a visit to the Rebbe, he was in an excellent mood.
So, she decided that she should now go herself to the Rebbe and seek his
blessing.
Face to face with the
Rebbe, Shoshana reported her situation through a veil of sobs and tears. The
Rebbe listened with full attention and visible compassion to every word. After,
he blessed her and encouraged her to place her trust in G-d Al-mighty.
* * *
Several months went by
as the widow's financial circumstances deteriorated further. Creditors were
repeatedly knocking on her door, including representatives of the poritz,
the local nobleman landlord, to whom much money was owed even before Leibel's
death aggravated the situation.
Shoshana made another
journey to the Sadigorer, but this time refused to be satisfied with his
blessing only. Feeling under enormous pressure, she began enumerating to the
Rebbe various methods she imagined that the Ribono Shel Olam ('Lord
of the Universe') could employ to help her.
For example, He could
arrange that she should happen to be on the road at the exact moment that the
poritz returned from an excursion, and when he descended from his coach his
wallet could fall from his pocket, and only she would notice it.
"Then," she
explained, "I could extract the money inside it and keep it. After all,
the poritz is exceptionally wealthy, so he won't feel damaged by the loss. I'll
then take the majority of the money and give it to the poritz to clear our debt
to him, while the remainder will provide sustenance for myself and my children
for a long while."
Sharing the pain of
her desperateness, the Rebbe gazed at the widow with empathy and mercy before
responding gently, "We don't need to give advice to the Creator of All; He
knows quite well all by Himself how to provide a solution."
* * *
One day not so long
after the above encounter, at an hour when the widow was not at home, her
oldest son, a lad of fifteen, heard a persistent knocking on their front door.
When he opened it, he was startled to see the poritz himself standing there, in
all his glory.
"Is your father
at home?" he asked. The boy answered that it is months already that his
father has not been among the living.
"What!"
cried out the poritz in a shocked tone. "I am so sorry to hear that. I was
never told about it." Then he immediately switched to the matter for which
he had come.
"I have always
purchased my whiskey from your father exclusively. In another two weeks I will
be making a wedding for my daughter, and I need a very large amount of quality
whiskey, like that which your father knew to prepare."
Leibel's son answered
that since his father passed away, all activity in the cellar has ceased.
"There is no whiskey left. The barrels are all empty."
The poritz, however,
figured that the teenager was simply trying to act like a sharp businessman,
and his disclaimer was in order to establish a bargaining position. "There
is no reason to negotiate," he replied. "I'll pay you double or
triple the usual price; just agree to prepare this large order on time for
me."
The boy froze in fear.
He could not understand what the poritz expected of him, so he remained silent.
The exasperated poritz ran out of patience and raised his voice. "Why
don't you answer me, boy? Take me immediately to the cellar. I want to see for
myself what remains."
Leibel's son, in
trepidation, barely managed to drag himself down the stairs. The poritz,
however, was becoming happier and more excited with each step. "Ah!"
he exclaimed as he sniffed the air. "The scent of whiskey - good, strong
whiskey! - is seeping into my nostrils."
In the cellar, the
poritz began to inspect the barrels, one by one. So far, they were all empty.
The son was becoming increasingly apprehensive, frightened even. He knew that
the only casks with any liquid in them were the few that were full of water,
soaking in order to remove the last dregs of the whiskey. What would be the
poritz's reaction when he finished his survey?
When the poritz
reached the first water-filled barrel, he stepped back in surprise. "What
is this?" he asked the boy in an inquisitive yet demanding tone.
"Water," was
the one-word response.
Suspicious, the poritz
scooped a bit of the contents with his hand and swallowed it. His face lit up
and he roared with joy. "I'm amazed. The taste of this whiskey is even
better than what your father used to make!
"You tried to
fool me! I shall forgive you, but only on the condition you prepare for me in
time for the wedding three barrels of whiskey with this supremely delicious
taste exactly."
The poritz next took
out his wallet, removed from it a thick wad of bills, and handed it to the
trembling teenager. Then he walked quickly up the stairs and departed.
The boy ran to tell
his mother the astonishing turn of events. She immediately departed in the
first available carriage to Sadigora.
"Rebbe!" She
cried out. "How can I possibly acquire three full barrels of high-quality
whiskey in less than two weeks?"
The Rebbe smiled
warmly and answered, "Is water lacking? Fill the barrels with water from
the river, as you usually do when cleaning."
* * *
The woman returned
home, astonished and perplexed by the words of the rebbe. Nevertheless, she and
her son hurried to fulfill the Tzadik’s directive. A few days later, she
managed to deliver the barrels to the poritz, who was so grateful that he
extended to her a generous bonus.
The day of the wedding
of the Poritz's daughter arrived. The men guests were out of their minds with
delight at how tasty and strong the whiskey was. They demanded to know the
identity of its maker. The Poritz revealed that it was a teenage boy! - the son
of the departed Leibel, the master brewer.
The next morning,
representatives of all the wealthy noblemen that had been at the wedding
crowded into the courtyard of the widow. They all wished to buy the unique
whiskey they had imbibed the previous day.
Shoshana ran inside to
tell her son. They looked at each other, shrugged in bewilderment, and did the
only thing they could think of: hustle to the river with a wagon of empty casks
and fill them with water from the river. Maybe the miracle would re-occur, they
prayed.
Their eager customers
nevertheless took the precaution of tasting. They were immensely satisfied;
within the hour all the barrels were sold at a premium price.
Not a week passed and
nearly all the nobles sent to purchase more of 'the best whiskey ever.' It did
not take long after that until Shoshana was able to pay off all their debts to
the poritz and other creditors. Nor did that use up all the money from the
sales. Plenty remained to support the large family.
Soon after, the widow
journeyed to the rebbe again, this time to thank him for his miraculous
blessing. The rebbe smiled his warm smile and said, "Didn't I tell you
that the Al-mighty doesn't need our suggestions!"
The woman replied
innocently. "Please, the Rebbe should believe me. I thought of so many
different possibilities for salvation, but this method, that water should be
converted into whiskey, I have to admit that never occurred to me!"

successor of his famous father, the holy Rabbi Yisrael of
Rhyzhin (1797-1850), who passed away in Sadigora. His own elder son,
Yitzchak (1849-1917), became the first Boyaner Rebbe. His younger son, Yisrael
