Parsha Vayeira, stories of miracles and heroism, news

Slight change of wording to my comments last week: 11 And the birds of prey came down upon the carcasses, and Abram drove them away.

He made the requested and had to protect the meat from vultures, and besides or behind them eagles, crows, ravens, hawks and other birds of prey. This exhausted him.

Parsha Vayeira

Parsha Lech Lecha ended with Avraham at the age of 99 having a Bris. He was hurting and needed healing.

18:1 And the LORD appeared unto him by the terebinths of Mamre, as he sat in the tent door in the heat of the day;

It was one of those hot days where the Temperature could be 44-47C or 111-117F in Beersheva or Chevron. Hot like the Hoover Dam and Las Vegas on a sunny day. HASHEM is visiting Avraham on the third and most painful day after the Bris. But HASHEM senses that Avraham wants guests to host for a Kiddush HASHEM so while most travelers refrained from traveling on such a hot day.

2 and he lifted up his eyes and looked, and, lo, three men stood over against him; and when he saw them, he ran to meet them from the tent door, and bowed down to the earth,

He takes his leave from HASHEM in order to bring the three travelers under the Shechina and understand the love of HASHEM.

3 and said: 'My lord, if now I have found favor in thy sight, pass not away, I pray thee, from thy servant. 4 Let now a little water be fetched, and wash your feet, and recline yourselves under the tree. 5 And I will fetch a morsel of bread, and stay ye your heart; after that ye shall pass on; forasmuch as ye are come to your servant.' And they said: 'So do, as thou hast said.'

Rabbi Yosef Ben Porat Shlita mentioned a Medrash that Tzadikim say a little and do much and the wicked say a lot and do little. See what type of Genes our forefathers gave us. Rabbaynu Nissim 650 years ago stated that these traits are inherited. Rabbi Ben Porat concludes that the deeds of the fathers is a sign for action from the children.

RP:  This is what Avraham said a morsel of bread and that meant coarse grain. But we see what he brings the finest cake flour of semolina with butter, yoghurt, etc. while waiting for a whole tongue for each guest. Probably there was honey in the bread as cakes was mentioned.

6 And Abraham hastened into the tent unto Sarah, and said: 'Make ready quickly three measures of fine meal, knead it, and make cakes.' 7 And Abraham ran unto the herd, and fetched a calf tender and good, and gave it unto the servant; and he hastened to dress it. 8 And he took curd, and milk, and the calf which he had dressed, and set it before them; and he stood by them under the tree, and they did eat.

Avraham was one of the most hospitable men. He would slaughter a beast to give its tongue to the guest. Not a few slices of tongue but a whole tongue.

9 And they said unto him: 'Where is Sarah thy wife?' And he said: 'Behold, in the tent.'

In Arab countries in the Middle East and even Jewish Halacha one does not usually mention a man’s wife or especially enquires about her or strangers calling her by name.

10 And He said: 'I will certainly return unto thee when the season cometh round; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son.' And Sarah heard in the tent door, which was behind him.—

She was modest but ease dropping in on the conversation.

11 Now Abraham and Sarah were old, and well stricken in age; it had ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women.—

She was after Menopause, aged 90 even though before the flood there was probably no menopause due to stronger fruits, vegetables and life spans where the body did not degenerate until after 900 plus years under normal circumstances.

12 And Sarah laughed within herself, saying: 'After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also?'

Ridiculous, I am past child bearing my husband is an old man.

13 And the LORD said unto Abraham: 'Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying: Shall I of a surety bear a child, who am old?

She said, “My husband is old” but for Shalom Beit, the words were to changed to “I am old.” That is one of our problems we see the faults and weakness of others and never our own.

14 Is anything too hard for the LORD. At the set time I will return unto thee, when the season cometh round, and Sarah shall have a son.'

For the CREATOR of heaven and earth is anything too hard. Meaning that if HASHEM desired within an instant an egg from Sara and sperm from Avraham could combine to form a fully developed baby Yitzchak but preferred the normal 9 month route even if it too was miraculous.

15 Then Sarah denied, saying: 'I laughed not'; for she was afraid. And He said: 'Nay; but thou didst laugh.'

Similar to Adam trying to hide in Gan Eden from G-D but this time from an Angel.

16 And the men rose up from thence, and looked out toward Sodom; and Abraham went with them to bring them on the way.

The three have now established themselves as men of G-D or Angels before Avraham but still he accompanies his guests to protect their welfare within his boundaries. Once on the road a different story.

17 And the LORD said: 'Shall I hide from Abraham that which I am doing; 18 seeing that Abraham shall surely become a great and mighty nation, and all the nations of the earth shall be blessed in him? 19 For I have known him, to the end that he may command his children and his household after him, that they may keep the way of the LORD, to do righteousness and justice; to the end that the LORD may bring upon Abraham that which He hath spoken of him.'

Essentially, Lot is being kept alive for two reasons. The first is the merit of being a relative and Torah Student of Avraham and the second is because his father, Haran, died on a Kiddush HASHEM.

20 And the LORD said: 'Verily, the cry of Sodom and Gomorrah is great, and, verily, their sin is exceeding grievous. 21 I will go down now, and see whether they have done altogether according to the cry of it, which is come unto Me; and if not, I will know.'

After you rescued the people of Sodom and set an example for them, they turned back to their evil ways but with more evil.

22 And the men turned from thence, and went toward Sodom; but Abraham stood yet before the LORD. 23 And Abraham drew near, and said: 'Wilt Thou indeed sweep away the righteous with the wicked? 24 Peradventure there are fifty righteous within the city; wilt Thou indeed sweep away and not forgive the place for the fifty righteous that are therein?

Avraham tries to find merit to save the large town or city of Sodom and the environs. He starts out with 50 righteous men in the city.

25 That be far from Thee to do after this manner, to slay the righteous with the wicked, that so the righteous should be as the wicked; that be far from Thee; shall not the Judge of all the earth do justly?' 26 And the LORD said: 'If I find in Sodom fifty righteous within the city, then I will forgive all the place for their sake.'

HASHEM through the Angels tell Avraham that for 50righteous men, he will not destroy the city.

27 And Abraham answered and said: 'Behold now, I have taken upon me to speak unto the LORD, who am but dust and ashes. 28 Peradventure there shall lack five of the fifty righteous; wilt Thou destroy all the city for lack of five?' And He said: 'I will not destroy it, if I find there forty and five.'

Although Avraham knows that it is not right to bargain with HASHEM like in a bazaar but pleading and praying for mercy even for a wicked town that might do Teshuva it is worth it.

29 And he spoke unto Him yet again, and said: 'Peradventure there shall be forty found there.' And He said: 'I will not do it for the forty's sake.'

Avraham pleads for Sodom again and again.

30 … 'I will not do it, if I find thirty there.' 31 … 'I will not destroy it for the twenty's sake.' 32 And he said: 'Oh, let not the LORD be angry, and I will speak yet but this once. Peradventure ten shall be found there.' And He said: 'I will not destroy it for the ten's sake.'

Unlike what we see of Noach making the Teva and not begging for his generation, Avraham begged for the many lives of the wicked Sodom for they were in the image of the L-RD. Avraham pleaded for the number of righteous until a Minyan. For if a town does not have a minimum of ten righteous people then its very existence is questionable.

33 And the LORD went His way, as soon as He had left off speaking to Abraham; and Abraham returned unto his place.

He left with the hope that perhaps there was a righteous Minyan in Sodom.

19:1 And the two angels came to Sodom at even; and Lot sat in the gate of Sodom; and Lot saw them, and rose up to meet them; and he fell down on his face to the earth; 2 and he said: 'Behold now, my lords, turn aside, I pray you, into your servant's house, and tarry all night, and wash your feet, and ye shall rise up early, and go on your way.'

He learned well from Avraham’s hospitality.

And they said: 'Nay; but we will abide in the broad place all night.' 3 And he urged them greatly; and they turned in unto him, and entered into his house; and he made them a feast, and did bake unleavened bread, and they did eat.

To this day, as with Lot, if an Arab gives you hospitality from Avraham, he will defend you with his life. “But once out of his house, he could stab you in the back” – Rabbi Yosef Ben Porat.

4 But before they lay down, the men of the city, even the men of Sodom, compassed the house round, both young and old, all the people from every quarter. 5 And they called unto Lot, and said unto him: 'Where are the men that came in to thee this night? bring them out unto us, that we may know them.' 6 And Lot went out unto them to the door, and shut the door after him. 7 And he said: 'I pray you, my brethren, do not so wickedly.

Please do not “know” these men, they are under my roof and protection. The Hebrew is Anshe HaEl but not to be interpreted as men of G-D but El here means Eleh or these men. But the use of the words is interesting.

8 Behold now, I have two daughters that have not known man; let me, I pray you, bring them out unto you, and do ye to them as is good in your eyes; only unto these men do nothing; forasmuch as they are come under the shadow of my roof.'

Rather take my daughters if you want.

9 And they said: 'Stand back.' And they said: 'This one fellow came in to sojourn, and he will needs play the judge; now will we deal worse with thee, than with them.' And they pressed sore upon the man, even Lot, and drew near to break the door. 10 But the men put forth their hand, and brought Lot into the house to them, and the door they shut. 11 And they smote the men that were at the door of the house with blindness, both small and great; so that they wearied themselves to find the door.

The Angels

12 And the men said unto Lot: 'Hast thou here any besides? son-in-law, and thy sons, and thy daughters, and whomsoever thou hast in the city; bring them out of the place; 13 for we will destroy this place, because the cry of them is waxed great before the LORD; and the LORD hath sent us to destroy it.'

In a few hours, Sodom is going to be destroyed. He tries to save his family.

14 And Lot went out, and spoke unto his sons-in-law, who married his daughters, and said: 'Up, get you out of this place; for the LORD will destroy the city.' But he seemed unto his sons-in-law as one that jested.

They look at him as if he has gone stark raving mad.

15 And when the morning arose, then the angels hastened Lot, saying: 'Arise, take thy wife, and thy two daughters that are here; lest thou be swept away in the iniquity of the city.' 16 But he lingered; and the men laid hold upon his hand, and upon the hand of his wife, and upon the hand of his two daughters; the LORD being merciful unto him. And they brought him forth, and set him without the city.

G-D was merciful to him as he had learned good traits from Avraham even though he was in a bad place.

17 And it came to pass, when they had brought them forth abroad, that he said: 'Escape for thy life; look not behind thee, neither stay thou in all the Plain; escape to the mountain, lest thou be swept away.' 18 And Lot said unto them: 'Oh, not so, my lord; 19 behold now, thy servant hath found grace in thy sight, and thou hast magnified thy mercy, which thou hast shown unto me in saving my life; and I cannot escape to the mountain, lest the evil overtake me, and I die. 20 Behold now, this city is near to flee unto, and it is a little one; oh, let me escape thither--is it not a little one?--and my soul shall live.' 21 And he said unto him: 'See, I have accepted thee concerning this thing also, that I will not overthrow the city of which thou hast spoken. 22 Hasten thou, escape thither; for I cannot do anything till thou become thither.'—

My lot fleeing to Zoar, he saved it as the Angel could not destroy until Lot was safe. Why was Zoar saved. Avraham was 99 and close to 100. When Avraham aka Avram at that time was 48years old, the Tower of Bavel dispersed the nations. Sodom was in their 52nd year. But Lot uses Nun Aleph aka Na let me flee to Zoar. The Gematria of Nun is 50 and Aleph is one. Zoar has less sins they are in their 51st year and therefore when Lot goes there, they can be saved.

Therefore, the name of the city was called Zoar.-- 23 The sun was risen upon the earth when Lot came unto Zoar.

Lot and family packed quickly and moved quickly. The Angels speeded up their spacial movement or slowed down time in such a way that their escape occurred with time enough that kept with Netz (sunrise) when the Angels sing praise unto the L-RD.

24 Then the LORD caused to rain upon Sodom and upon Gomorrah brimstone and fire from the LORD out of heaven; 25 and He overthrow those cities, and all the Plain, and all the inhabitants of the cities, and that which grew upon the ground.

The Angels carried out their mission and managed even to catch the heavenly Shachris Davening.

26 But his wife looked back from behind him, and she became a pillar of salt.

Felix, my father, of blessed memory speculated that perhaps Sodom was collecting some radioactive material that glowed at night. The night before the destruction there was a blinding light as the material was getting close to Critical Mass. What happened at Sodom was an atomic blast and Lot and his daughters were in the cave. But the only thing left where Lot’s Wife had been was a pillar of salt and perhaps a shadow photo image of a woman as in the wake of Hiroshima.

27 And Abraham got up early in the morning to the place where he had stood before the LORD. 28 And he looked out toward Sodom and Gomorrah, and toward all the land of the Plain, and beheld, and, lo, the smoke of the land went up as the smoke of a furnace.

And he realized that despite the size or the city, there were not even 10 righteous men.

29 And it came to pass, when God destroyed the cities of the Plain, that God remembered Abraham, and sent Lot out of the midst of the overthrow, when He overthrew the cities in which Lot dwelt. 30 And Lot went up out of Zoar, and dwelt in the mountain, and his two daughters with him; for he feared to dwell in Zoar; and he dwelt in a cave, he and his two daughters. 31 And the first-born said unto the younger: 'Our father is old, and there is not a man in the earth to come in unto us after the manner of all the earth. 32 Come, let us make our father drink wine, and we will lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.'

Where is the logic here? There must be men is Zoar. Great Uncle Avraham is alive, Eliezer is Alive aren’t there other men in the world? But Lot, what do you expect from the public-school system in Sodom? Instead of a Beit Yacov or Beit Rivka etc. you sent them to either the Vashti or Zeresh prep school (names of wicked women in Sefer Esther).

33 And they made their father drink wine that night. And the first-born went in, and lay with her father; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose.

Lot might have been influenced enough by his wife to live in Sodom, but not wicked enough to perform incest. He was so drunk and perhaps his daughter disguised herself that he did not know what was going on.

34 And it came to pass on the morrow, that the first-born said unto the younger: 'Behold, I lay yesternight with my father. Let us make him drink wine this night also; and go thou in, and lie with him, that we may preserve seed of our father.' 35 And they made their father drink wine that night also. And the younger arose, and lay with him; and he knew not when she lay down, nor when she arose. 36 Thus were both the daughters of Lot with child by their father. 37 And the first-born bore a son, and called his name Moab--the same is the father of the Moabites unto this day.

One day, HASHEM will grant us knowledge why Ruth, Dovid and the Moshiach have to come into the world this way. Maybe a Tikkun?

38 And the younger, she also bore a son, and called his name Ben-ammi--the same is the father of the children of Ammon unto this day.

The capitol of Yarden is Rabat Ammon so they left their influence in the area.

20:1 And Abraham journeyed from thence toward the land of the South, and dwelt between Kadesh and Shur; and he sojourned in Gerar. 2 And Abraham said of Sarah his wife: 'She is my sister.' And Abimelech king of Gerar sent, and took Sarah. 3 But God came to Abimelech in a dream of the night, and said to him: 'Behold, thou shalt die, because of the woman whom thou hast taken; for she is a man's wife.'

Another place with no fear of G-D and Avraham becomes afraid just as some of Saddam Hussein’s generals learned that if he looked at your wife – divorce her if you want to keep your head about you.

4 Now Abimelech had not come near her; and he said: 'LORD, wilt Thou slay even a righteous nation? 5 Said he not himself unto me: She is my sister? and she, even she herself said: He is my brother. In the simplicity of my heart and the innocence of my hands have I done this.' 6 And God said unto him in the dream: 'Yea, I know that in the simplicity of thy heart thou hast done this, and I also withheld thee from sinning against Me. Therefore, suffered I thee not to touch her. 7 Now therefore restore the man's wife; for he is a prophet, and he shall pray for thee, and thou shalt live; and if thou restore her not, know thou that thou shalt surely die, thou, and all that are thine.' 8 And Abimelech rose early in the morning, and called all his servants, and told all these things in their ears; and the men were sore afraid. 9 Then Abimelech called Abraham, and said unto him: 'What hast thou done unto us? … 10 And Abimelech said unto Abraham: 'What saw thou, that thou hast done this thing?' 11 And Abraham said: 'Because I thought: Surely the fear of God is not in this place; and they will slay me for my wife's sake. … 18 For the LORD had fast closed up all the wombs of the house of Abimelech, because of Sarah Abraham's wife. 21:1 And the LORD remembered Sarah as He had said, and the LORD did unto Sarah as He had spoken. 2 And Sarah conceived, and bore Abraham a son in his old age, at the set time of which God had spoken to him. 3 And Abraham called the name of his son that was born unto him, whom Sarah bore to him, Isaac. 4 And Abraham circumcised his son Isaac when he was eight days old, as God had commanded him. 5 And Abraham was a hundred years old, when his son Isaac was born unto him. 6 And Sarah said: 'God hath made laughter for me; every one that heareth will laugh on account of me.' 7 And she said: 'Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should give children suck? for I have borne him a son in his old age.' 8 And the child grew, and was weaned. And Abraham made a great feast on the day that Isaac was weaned.

On that day in front the other women, Sara let other babies suckle to show that the child was hers and not through a surrogate.

9 And Sarah saw the son of Hagar the Egyptian, whom she had borne unto Abraham, making sport. 10 Wherefore she said unto Abraham: 'Cast out this bondwoman and her son; for the son of this bondwoman shall not be heir with my son, even with Isaac.'

Big brother or not, he was giving over idols for Yitzchak to play with so that Yitzchak would not inherit Avraham.

11 And the thing was very grievous in Abraham's sight on account of his son. 12 And God said unto Abraham: 'Let it not be grievous in thy sight because of the lad, and because of thy bondwoman; in all that Sarah saith unto thee, hearken unto her voice; for in Isaac shall seed be called to thee. 13 And also of the son of the bondwoman will I make a nation, because he is thy seed.' 14 And Abraham arose up early in the morning, and took bread and a bottle of water, and gave it unto Hagar, putting it on her shoulder, and the child, and sent her away; and she departed, and strayed in the wilderness of Beersheba. 15 And the water in the bottle was spent, and she cast the child under one of the shrubs. 16 And she went, and sat her down over against him a good way off, as it were a bow-shot; for she said: 'Let me not look upon the death of the child.' And she sat over against him, and lifted up her voice, and wept.

I have no water for my son and he will die of thurst. She did not even think of herself.

17 And God heard the voice of the lad; and the angel of God called to Hagar out of heaven, and said unto her: 'What ails thee, Hagar? fear not; for God hath heard the voice of the lad where he is. 18 Arise, lift up the lad, and hold him fast by thy hand; for I will make him a great nation.' 19 And God opened her eyes, and she saw a well of water; and she went, and filled the bottle with water, and gave the lad drink. 20 And God was with the lad, and he grew; and he dwelt in the wilderness, and became an archer. 21 And he dwelt in the wilderness of Paran; and his mother took him a wife out of the land of Egypt.

Since he was 14 when Yitzchak was born, he was mature enough to marry. I am sure that Avraham gave Hagar plenty of money and she could afford a nice dowry for a wife for him.

22 And it came to pass at that time, that Abimelech and Phicol the captain of his host spoke unto Abraham, saying: 'God is with thee in all that thou do.

Like in many countries that kicked out their Jews and their economy began to collapse, the Plishtim were no different.

23 Now therefore swear unto me here by God that thou wilt not deal falsely with me, nor with my son, nor with my son's son; but according to the kindness that I have done unto thee, thou shalt do unto me, and to the land wherein thou hast sojourned.' 24 And Abraham said: 'I will swear.' … 28 And Abraham set seven ewe-lambs of the flock by themselves. 29 And Abimelech said unto Abraham: 'What mean these seven ewe-lambs which thou hast set by themselves?' 30 And he said: 'Verily, these seven ewe-lambs shalt thou take of my hand, that it may be a witness unto me, that I have dug this well.' 31 Wherefore that place was called Beersheva; because there they swore both of them.

Beer is well and Beersheva is the well of the oath or swearing.

32 So they made a covenant at Beersheva; and Abimelech rose up, and Phicol the captain of his host, and they returned into the land of the Philistines. 33 And Abraham planted a tamarisk-tree in Beersheva, and called there on the name of the LORD, the Everlasting God. 34 And Abraham sojourned in the land of the Philistines many days.

According to the Midrash 37years as a minimum.

22:1 And it came to pass after these things, that God did prove Abraham, and said unto him: 'Abraham'; and he said: 'Here am I.' 2 And He said: 'Take now thy son, thine only son,

This could be either Yishmael or Yitzchak.

whom thou love,

This could be either Yishmael or Yitzchak.

even Isaac, and get thee into the land of Moriah; and offer him there for a burnt-offering upon one of the mountains which I will tell thee of.' 3 And Abraham rose early in the morning, and saddled his ass, and took two of his young men with him, and Isaac his son; and he cleaved the wood for the burnt-offering, and rose up, and went unto the place of which God had told him.

He arose quickly and left in a hurry so as not to let Sara know where he was heading.

4 On the third day Abraham lifted up his eyes, and saw the place afar off. 5 And Abraham said unto his young men: 'Abide ye here with the ass, and I and the lad will go yonder; and we will worship, and come back to you.' 6 And Abraham took the wood of the burnt-offering, and laid it upon Isaac his son; and he took in his hand the fire and the knife; and they went both of them together. 7 And Isaac spoke unto Abraham his father, and said: 'My father.' And he said: 'Here am I, my son.' And he said: 'Behold the fire and the wood; but where is the lamb for a burnt-offering?' 8 And Abraham said: 'God will provide Himself the lamb for a burnt-offering, my son.'

Yitzchak sensed something was wrong. However, since Avraham was a Novi, he believedhim and they continued on.

So they went both of them together. … 13 And Abraham lifted up his eyes, and looked, and behold behind him a ram caught in the thicket by his horns. And Abraham went and took the ram, and offered him up for a burnt-offering in the stead of his son.

So in the end, and view the word of the Tzadik came true.

14 And Abraham called the name of that place Adonai-Yireh; as it is said to this day: 'In the mount where the LORD is seen.' 15 And the angel of the LORD called unto Abraham a second time out of heaven, 16 and said: 'By Myself have I sworn, saith the LORD, because thou hast done this thing, and hast not withheld thy son, thine only son, 17 that in blessing I will bless thee, and in multiplying I will multiply thy seed as the stars of the heaven, and as the sand which is upon the seashore; and thy seed shall possess the gate of his enemies; 18 and in thy seed shall all the nations of the earth be blessed; because thou hast hearkened to My voice.' 19 So Abraham returned unto his young men, and they rose up and went together to Beersheva; and Abraham dwelt at Beersheba.

He returned to Beersheva from whence he left. Sara upon the advice of the Satan was trying to stop the Akedah and was on her way via Sodom towards Har Moriah. Avraham was so quick in fulfilling the Akedah that she did not have time to catch up to him.

20 And it came to pass after these things, that it was told Abraham, saying: 'Behold, Milcah, she also hath borne children unto thy brother Nahor: 21 Uz his first-born, and Buz his brother, and Kemuel the father of Aram; 22 and Chesed, and Hazo, and Pildash, and Jidlaph, and Bethuel.' 23 And Bethuel begot Rebekah; these eight did Milcah bear to Nahor, Abraham's brother. 24 And his concubine, whose name was Reumah, she also bore Tebah, and Gaham, and Tahash, and Maacah.

All these Pasukim are for the birth of Rivka.

Yasmin Porat’s Story 10 minutes on Arutz 12 TV

Yasmin is an attractive accountant from a northern Kibbutz. It is unclear if she was going to visit another Kibbutz or was at the Rage Party. She heard the sirens and tried to flee north saw the terrorists and the RPG’s turned around towards Kibbutz Beri. The gate originally was locked and tried to flee. Saw terrorists and now the gate was open and she and her friend drove in.

She hid in one place and then in and then another where she hid well. Even after a man holding the door down for over an hour was injured or captured, she hid. Eventually, the terrorist found her hiding place and she was brought together with others captured.

Somehow, on the road to Beersheva, help was slowly coming. About 40 in number wanted to go to Gaza with the 13 hostages. She began to speak to telephone 100 with the police. Miraculously, the terrorist thought that they were being ambushed by the police.

Yasmin was on the phone with the police negotiating safe passage for the terrorist. Had they walked or ran, the path to Gaza was clear. The terrorist conducting the negotiating told her call the police again and again.

Eventually, after about two hours, Border Police arrived in full assault gear. They started shooting. The terrorist negotiating took Yasmin as a shield as he started stripping off his clothing to surrender. In the end he was only in his birthday suit and he pushed her to the cops and got hand cuffed. As for the others if I am not mistaken a hostage survived with wounds the massive gunfight with the other terrorist who are now with 72 pigs in the next world.

Achdus – Brotherhood or Unity by Rabbi Pinchas Winston Shlita

WHY HAVE I put a request for achdus before a victory over our enemies? Because I know that the latter depends upon the former. That’s the reason, isn’t it, why division in this country is usually followed by some kind of unifying war?

During the Yom Kippur War in 1973, I was told, many thought it was the end of the Jewish State, God forbid. But when some asked Rav Abramsky, zt”l, one of the Gedolim of that generation, why he wasn’t as concerned as others about the outcome he told them, “With this much achdus the Jewish people will not lose the war!” He was right, Boruch Hashem.

After all, you didn’t bring us back to Eretz Yisroel to divide us. We are a nation that knows exile only too well. We are the only people to have been spread to the four corners of the earth, and the only one to have been ingathered from there afterwards. To do what? To fight against each other? To build walls between groups? We are supposed to be a single people with a single God living on a single land. It’s in our davening, in Shabbos Mincha.

Granted, national unity has not been our history. Moshe Rabbaynu had to fight off dissenters and breakaways in his day, and that was right under the auspices of God. After getting to the land and building a kingdom, it later divided into two parts during Rechavam’s reign, remaining that way until foreign powers eventually attacked and exiled all of us.

Even after we came back to the land, we had a difficult time being unified. The joke about “two Jews, three opinions” is no joke, just a sad reality. You would think that a nation that suffered the Holocaust would never want to fight one another ever again. We have enough enemies in the world. We don’t need to become our own worst enemies as well.

Five Motorcycle Cops with Pistols vs. Armed to the Teeth Terrorists

Advanced Sgt. Benny? Blumenkraus or Blumenkrantz and his motor cyclists got a report of terrorist attacking. The 5 hid behind cars and somebody from a nearby army base had placed an empty tank in the path of the terrorists’ trucks.

Using pistols he and his back-up managed to take out two terrors all 5 took positions behind the tank and a gunfight ensued. A few less terrorists part of the south was secured and the five are with us today.

Nurse Michal Alon takes 3 bullets at the Zikim Training Base 8 kids in shelter.

Michal is the wife of either the military Rabbi of the base or a reserve Rabbi. Since it was Shabbos Simchas Torah, she joined her husband at the base.

The sirens went off and they sheltered in an up protected barracks where they slept. There was a break and she took the children and with some soldiers they sheltered in place.

In the meantime, there was a firefight between the guard towers and a large number of Hamas trying to overwhelm the base. A soldier girl named Noa took whatever to her head and she was half-alert and in pain. The nurse in Michal brought her from the safe room to the area where Noa was and she dealt with her injury.

There was a guard at the door and he was hit fatally in the head defending the infirmary. Then appeared at the door somebody with a rifle who shot Michal in the arm chest and elsewhere. Miraculously, with one bullet still in her today, no internal organs were damaged and she took off her head scarf to make a tourniquet.

After her injury, she returned to the saferoom. The soldier guarding the saferoom was one of the injured. He was shot but managed to injure the terrorist who shot him and other soldiers took down the terrorist. There was now three injured on the base. She and two others awaited three hours for evacuation and finally the help came. She was one of the lucky ones.

Mother of Tamar Hadad (male soldier) to the rescue.

Oct. 7th in Ofakim Tamar heard the sirens and the booms. He was on leave from his base. He did not wait to be called up. He went to his unit with a few other soldiers. When they got either the junction or the 232 road, the three confronted terrorist.

Tamar’s mother heard that there were wounded. She took her car to bring the wounded to the Magen Dovid. The soldiers were fighting and finally regained the upper hand. The most seriously wounded were to be evacuated first.

The first wounded person was Tamar. She told him that be strong and wait for her at the hospital as she had more injured to evacuate. And so it was she went back and forth a number of times saving lives.

Igor Pobbov on his way to protect family eliminates 13 terrorists.

Igor is a policeman or border policeman in Chevron. When he got a message from his wife that she and the children were trapped in a shelter, he asked his commander if he could go home.

He was granted permission. On the way home, on road 232, he saw in front of him Terrorist shooting at cars. He parked his car at a far away bus stop and walked on the side of the road through the bushes until he was close to the terrorist. Unseen, he attacked them killing two. As he left the scene, two more came to see their colleagues. They too became Shachidim. This went on and on with him sneaking in the under-bush time after time until 13 terrorist were eliminated, his path home opened and where he could defend his family.

One man escaped and went back three times to save.

On the 4th escape attempt, he died on a Kiddush HASHEM HY”D

Stories of heroes are too many but happy to be part of this nation.

So, the next time you hear somebody saying, “you can tell a

Jew by the yellow streak running down his back”.

From the beaches of Normandy June 6, ’44 we have heroes.

Wonder of wonders miracles of miracles

One woman was at the party with her 49year old girlfriend, mother of three.

When the sirens went off and the party ended instead of going home with her male neighbor, she went with her friend.

As the rockets fell on the way, the two stopped the car by a secure place and jumped in as a rocket hit and set the car on fire a few seconds later. Later two men joined the two. They hear shots and Arabic outside and knew either the Arabs or them so they pulled-off a flight 93 and rushed the Arabs. Unfortunately, they did not succeed HY”D.

The two women were left alone. An Arab clean up squad came and sprayed them with bullets. The woman was shot in the back and head grazed lost consciousness. She thought that she died. Her friend was on top of her hugging her and texting that she had died and the 49year old was bleeding to death.

The Arabs came back another time and threw a grenade. The forth time they came she lay still with her eyes open and they assumed her dead.

Finally, she heard Hebrew anybody a live here? Some soldiers came under fire and rescued her with her faint voice answer. If that was not a series of miracles to keep her alive I don’t know what is. Tehillim 127:1 EXCEPT THAT G-D GUARDS THE CITY, THE CRIES OF A WATCHMAN ARE IN VAIN.

Oct. 28/29 starting the 4th week. Day 23

I noted on Friday that the terrorist did not hit the religious areas of Ashdod or Modiin. So they must have heard me and attacked Ashdod Friday afternoon and us and Modiin Illit on Friday night.

Friday afternoon three injured in a hit on a building in Tel Aviv and another fall in a public area. Shabbos a fire from a fall and a hit on a building and as I write Ramat Gan is under a rocket attack.

On Friday night, a division of soldiers entered Gaza and destroyed 150 tunnels. They consisted of Golani 51 and 13, engineering and armor. Motzei Shabbos more troops entered Gaza on a wider front.

In the north, a mini-war is going on. Shabbos was full of attempts by Hezballah, artillery and Motzei Shabbos penetration attempts at Margaliot. Soldiers who died, the number rises to 311.

After Hezballah Rocket Attack: https://www.jpost.com/israel-news/defense-news/article-770588

Upon interrogation, Hamas soldiers told of a plan to attack simultaneous with Hezballah on a different date. Hezballah is disciplined and well trained by Iran. Hamas is a band of murderers and saw the opportunity to kill the party goers. It was not a miracle for them but a miracle for the survivors.

Again, today around noon an attack followed by a second attack of rockets from Rishon to Hod HaSharon and there one fell. Rocket parts fell in Rishon.

80% of Israeli Arabs are with us but some have been arrested. East Yerushalayim Arabs and Imams is a different story and more arrests. As of now 194 or more arrested.

The IDF struck over 450 terror targets during the past day. IDF forces continue to expand ground activities. Only 100 IAF planes are in use most are kept for the north.

I am in the middle of writing two tales of heroism of Jews during the first day of the surprise attack. This week’s rabbipauli.blogspot dot com.

Yesterday, in his regular blame game, Netanyahu attacked the Shin Bet and army Intelligence. Opposition Leader went to the radio and asked them to play a tape he made a few weeks before the war in which he stated that he has intelligence that Gaza is going to heat-up in spite of the Qatar money and present calm.

There is an organization called Ohev Yisrael (Love Israel) that is asking for names of Israeli soldiers so they can pray for them. DO NOT give them any information or names. This is a Palestinian organization. They are actually mapping the IDF and asking what equipment they need. This is a threat to the security of Israel and the IDF. Please forward this.

The L-RD is good to me. I managed to change my flight to the States to Jan. 22 and hopefully things will settle down by then. To leave my wife during this time would not be proper and she refused to fly now for a number of reasons. Maybe or maybe not she will join me then.

Oct. 31

Monday evening there was a military homeland defense drill in my Yishuv soldiers from the home front. A few dozen soldiers ran down my block and took defense positions and checked out buildings. I watched them as they got as far as my house.

Since my wife and I are getting on and our hearing impaired a bit by age, I asked my neighbor if he heard the siren and he too said only through his phone. I guess the Yishuv is going to repair the capability and the same with my daughter who in Modiin Illit heard only a faint siren.

I don’t follow What’s App like a teenager and opened up mine too late to see a notice that in the G. Synagogue near the town’s entrance there was I guess an army speedy wedding and people were invited to bring joy to the bride and groom.

When I see day 25 of the war it reminds me of a silly childish song we sang during the cold war and I was about 10 at the time. It was like the Xmas song but 12 days of war. It started out with a cartridge in a 33. It had tanks, planes and not upon the world atomic bombs. But as the war progresses, the childish song seems to be too real.

Last night, I watched Channel 13th Tzvi Yechezkeli was with a map of Gaza. He showed the entrance of Israeli Troops. From the North near Yad Mordechai along the coastal  road tanks entered in a wide area and moved south. From the Northeast along a wide front as far south as the Gaza River area, a column was cut to coast road from the east. Other areas in between were caught between the two.

As the IAF takes out more and more rocket staging areas the number of rocket attacks have gone down but still too many.
