Thought for the week
with the threats of Iran and Hezballah: 3:22 Ye shall not fear them; for the LORD your God, He it is
that fights for you.
HASHEM goes before you
to fight your battle so fear not.
Parsha Devarim
Our time line is Rosh
Chodesh Shevat 2488 and 37 days before Moshe is going to be gathered to the
next world. We ended Sefer Bamidbar (Numbers) right opposite Yarden Yericho. We
are on the east bank of the Yarden conquered by Moshe and Yisrael.
Devarim contains over
200 of the 613 Mitzvos and consists of three Drashos of Moshe Rabbeinu. The
first is a review of past history, rebellions, errors and the Mussar of the
Shema or Unity of G-D.
1:1 These
are the words which Moses spoke unto all Israel beyond the Jordan; in the
wilderness, in the Arabah, over against Suph, between Paran and Tophel, and
Laban, and Hazeroth, and Di-zahab.
Understanding Hebrew. In
my everyday spoken Hebrew. I would say for example like the sacrifice of
Yitzchak. “And it came to pass (Vayehi which signifies a bad thing) after these
Devarim (things or events).” But there is another Hebrew word to talk
(Vaydaber) “Vaydaber HASHEM to Moshe saying…”. The root is (Debur) or talk. So
when reading the Hebrew we see Dalet Vet-Bet Resh.
The fact that this Sefer
contains three lectures indicates that it is Devar meaning word and in plural
words.
The four places
mentioned are places where sins occurred or hinting at sins. Di-Zahav is a hint
of the Egel HaZahav or golden calf. Other places where there was no solid food
and the Slav or quail came, no water and other rebellions.
2 It
is eleven days journey from Horeb unto Kadesh-barnea by the way of mount
Seir. 3 And it came to pass in the fortieth year, in
the eleventh month, on the first day of the month, that Moses spoke unto the
children of Israel, according unto all that the LORD had given him in
commandment unto them;
It took 11 days from
Sinai to Kadesh-barnea where you dwelt in the area 38 years.
4 after
he had smitten Sihon the king of the Amorites, who dwelt in Heshbon, and Og the
king of Bashan, who dwelt in Ashtaroth, at Edrei; 5 beyond
the Jordan, in the land of Moab, took Moses upon him to expound this law,
saying:
This is a reference to
let us know that the Golan had been conquered and now Moshe was talking to the
Bnei Yisrael.
6 The
LORD our God spoke unto us in Horeb, saying: 'Ye have dwelt long enough in this
mountain; 7 turn you, and take your journey, and go to
the hill-country of the Amorites and unto all the places nigh thereunto, in the
Arabah, in the hill-country, and in the Lowland, and in the South, and by the
sea-shore; the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river,
the river Euphrates.
From the desert of Eilat
to Lebanon and up to the Euphrates shall be yours.
8 Behold,
I have set the land before you: go in and possess the land which the LORD swore
unto your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give unto them and to
their seed after them.'
I have given you the
land of your forefathers as an inheritance of the generations.
9 And
I spoke unto you at that time, saying: 'I am not able to bear you myself
alone;
All the people asking me
Halachos, Brachos and family problems were too much for me not counting the
rebellions.
10 the
LORD your God hath multiplied you, and, behold, ye are this day as the stars of
heaven for multitude.-- 11 The LORD, the God of your
fathers, make you a thousand times so many more as ye are, and bless you, as He
hath promised you!-- 12 How can I myself alone bear
your cumbrance, and your burden, and your strife?
I could not take the
burden of 2-3,000,000 Bnei Yisrael.
13 Get
you, from each one of your tribes, wise men, and understanding, and full of
knowledge, and I will make them heads over you.'
Rabbi Yacov Menken Shlita writes this week on “Lifeline” @torah.org The
Sforno says that there is an implied rebuke in the appointment of judges over
Israel, extending even to “ministers over tens.” Even though the Nation of
Israel was told that they would enter and inherit the Land of Israel without
needing to fight for it, receiving something far greater and honorable than all
their property, nonetheless they could not stop bickering and arguing — to the
point that every group of ten needed its own personal judge.
Despite
the universal notation in chumashim (printed texts of the Torah) to begin the
second portion of this week’s reading with verse twelve, as above, there is a
similarly universal custom to stop one verse earlier instead. The reason: the
first word of verse twelve, “Eichah,” is the same as the first word of the Book
of Lamentations which we read on the Ninth of Av. The Ninth of Av is the day of
mourning for the destruction of our two Temples and other Jewish tragedies, and
it follows Shabbos Parshas Devarim according to our calendar.
So rather than proclaiming loudly any connection between our Parsha and Lamentations, we begin the
second portion one verse earlier.
Here,
perhaps, in the connection of “Eichah” to “Eichah,” we find an additional layer
of rebuke. Our Sages tell us that the First Temple was destroyed because Israel
had violated the “cardinal sins” of idolatry, murder and immorality, while the
Second was destroyed because of baseless hatred. I think a connection can
easily be drawn from the sin to which Moshe alludes, to those things which
destroyed the Temples.
On
the one hand, the Sforno implies that each person was overly concerned with his
own property, to the point of pettiness. But in order for an argument to reach
the courts, there also needs to be a lack of communication, an inability to
reconcile differences, and a corresponding lack of concern for the other person’s property. After going to the
courts, when the loser no longer has any justified claims against the other,
all he is often left with is… baseless hatred towards his adversary. And, of
course, when baseless hatred is taken in turn to its extreme, it can lead to
murder. Even immorality often demonstrates a lack of concern for another person
and the uniqueness of his or her spousal relationship. So we see that the
hatred and discord which destroyed the Temples had their roots in the “petty
squabbles” of the Jews generations before.
If needless hatred begins with a lack of
communication, then increased communication can remove the hatred and divisions
that remain between us. With proper communication, we can counter the
misinformation that often causes hatred, and develop new relationships outside
our own groups. In short, as we mourn the Temple’s destruction, we can also
make our own best efforts to ensure that it is rebuilt – speedily in our
day, Amen.
14 And
ye answered me, and said: 'The thing which thou hast spoken is good for us to
do.'
So Moshe was happy to
have some help and educated the people.
15 So
I took the heads of your tribes, wise men, and full of knowledge, and made them
heads over you, captains of thousands, and captains of hundreds, and captains
of fifties, and captains of tens, and officers, tribe by tribe. 16 And I charged your judges at that time, saying: 'Hear the
causes between your brethren, and judge righteously between a man and his
brother, and the stranger that is with him. 17 Ye
shall not respect persons in judgment; ye shall hear the small and the great
alike; ye shall not be afraid of the face of any man; for the judgment is
God's; and the cause that is too hard for you ye shall bring unto me, and I
will hear it.'
Thus most of the cases
are simple and only cases like the daughters of Zelophad that are presidents or
other hard cases would come before Moshe.
18 And
I commanded you at that time all the things which ye should do. 19 And we journeyed from Horeb, and went through all that
great and dreadful wilderness which ye saw, by the way to the hill-country of
the Amorites, as the LORD our God commanded us; and we came to
Kadesh-barnea.
This area today is along
the current Israel-Egyptian Border. It is south of Sde Boker and runs eastward
a bit and close go or the Philadelphi Route. I assume the original went into
the modern Egyptian Site and is home today to many Bedouins.
20 And
I said unto you: 'Ye are come unto the hill-country of the Amorites, which the
LORD our God giveth unto us. 21 Behold, the LORD thy
God hath set the land before thee; go up, take possession, as the LORD, the God
of thy fathers, hath spoken unto thee; fear not, neither be dismayed.' 22 And ye came near unto me every one of you, and said: 'Let
us send men before us, that they may search the land for us, and bring us back
word of the way by which we must go up, and the cities unto which we shall
come.'
On a modern map you
could trace a road to Beer Sheva via route 60 to Chevron where Calev prayed and
they brought back the grapes from. Going up route 40 and somehow getting as far
as northern Syria.
23 And
the thing pleased me well; and I took twelve men of you, one man for every
tribe; 24 and they turned and went up into the
mountains, and came unto the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 And they took of the fruit of the land in their hands, and
brought it down unto us, and brought us back word, and said: 'Good is the land
which the LORD our God gives unto us.'
Very good fruit.
26 Yet
ye would not go up, but rebelled against the commandment of the LORD your
God; 27 and ye murmured in your tents, and said:
'Because the LORD hated us, He hath brought us forth out of the land of Egypt,
to deliver us into the hand of the Amorites, to destroy us.
But instead of spying
and bringing the report to the leadership only. You started panic among the
people.
28 Whither
are we going up? our brethren have made our heart to melt, saying: The people
is greater and taller than we; the cities are great and fortified up to heaven;
and moreover we have seen the sons of the Anakim there.'
Your untrusting weak
faith made you afraid of their fortified cities and taller statute.
29 Then
I said unto you: 'Dread not, neither be afraid of them. 30 The
LORD your God who goes before you, He shall fight for you, according to all
that He did for you in Egypt before your eyes; 31 and
in the wilderness, where thou hast seen how that the LORD thy God bore thee, as
a man doth bear his son, in all the way that ye went, until ye came unto this
place. 32 Yet in this thing ye do not believe the LORD
your God, 33 Who went before you in the way, to seek
you out a place to pitch your tents in: in fire by night, to show you by what
way ye should go, and in the cloud by day.'
We have HASHEM who is
our leader and will guide us. We shall see next week’s story in Ofakim that the
Simchas Torah dances were on one side of the area and killing on the less
faithful side.
34 And
the LORD heard the voice of your words, and was wroth, and swore, saying: 35 'Surely there shall not one of these men, even this evil
generation, see the good land, which I swore to give unto your fathers, 36 save Caleb the son of Yephunneh, he shall see it; and to
him will I give the land that he hath trodden upon, and to his children;
because he hath wholly followed the LORD.'
Wicked non-believing
cowards, you shall die in the wilderness except for Calev and Joshua.
37 Also
the LORD was angry with me for your sakes, saying: Thou also shalt not go in
thither; 38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before
thee, he shall go in thither; encourage thou him, for he shall cause Israel to
inherit it.
Even I, managed to anger
the L-RD, and I too will not enter the land.
39 Moreover
your little ones, that ye said should be a prey, and your children, that this
day have no knowledge of good or evil, they shall go in thither, and unto them
will I give it, and they shall possess it. 40 But as
for you, turn you, and take your journey into the wilderness by the way to the
Red Sea.'
Your generation of weak
believers shall not enter the land but the faithful next generation shall.
41 Then
ye answered and said unto me: 'We have sinned against the LORD, we will go up
and fight, according to all that the LORD our God commanded us.' And ye girded
on every man his weapons of war, and deemed it a light thing to go up into the
hill-country. 42 And the LORD said unto me: 'Say unto
them: Go not up, neither fight; for I am not among you; lest ye be smitten
before your enemies.' 43 So I spoke unto you, and ye
hearkened not; but ye rebelled against the commandment of the LORD, and were
presumptuous, and went up into the hill-country.
Then you went against
HASHEM a second time that instead of praying and fasting, you tried without HASHEM
to conquer.
44 And
the Amorites, that dwell in that hill-country, came out against you, and chased
you, as bees do, and beat you down in Seir, even unto Hormah.
By natural means instead
of Torah, you cannot conquer the land.
45 And
ye returned and wept before the LORD; but the LORD hearkened not to your voice,
nor gave ear unto you. 46 So ye abode in Kadesh many
days, according unto the days that ye abode there.
So you were doomed to
spend your life in the wilderness.
2:1 Then
we turned, and took our journey into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea,
as the LORD spoke unto me; and we compassed mount Seir many days.
Area of Esav as they would
not let us in.
2 And
the LORD spoke unto me, saying: 3 'Ye have compassed this mountain
long enough; turn you northward. 4 And command thou the people,
saying: Ye are to pass through the border of your brethren the children of
Esau, that dwell in Seir; and they will be afraid of you; take ye good heed
unto yourselves therefore; 5 contend not with them; for I will not
give you of their land, no, not so much as for the sole of the foot to tread
on; because I have given mount Seir unto Esau for a possession.
Being the son of Esav,
he has merits from Yitzchak Avinu.
6 Ye
shall purchase food of them for money, that ye may eat; and ye shall also buy
water of them for money, that ye may drink. 7 For the LORD thy God
hath blessed thee in all the work of thy hand; He hath known thy walking
through this great wilderness; these forty years the LORD thy God hath been
with thee; thou hast lacked nothing.' 8 So we passed by from our
brethren the children of Esau, that dwell in Seir, from the way of the Arabah,
from Eilat and from Ezion-geber.
This is probably by the
modern Ramon Airport is or slightly further north of same.
And
we turned and passed by the way of the wilderness of Moab. 9 And the
LORD said unto me: 'Be not at enmity with Moab, neither contend with them in
battle; for I will not give thee of his land for a possession; because I have
given Ar unto the children of Lot for a possession.--
Because of the merit of
Avraham, they have received this land.
10 The
Emim dwelt therein aforetime, a people great, and many, and tall, as the
Anakim; 11 these also are accounted Rephaim, as the Anakim; but the
Moabites call them Emim.
These men were extremely
tall probably 9 or 10 feet tall or close to the height of 3 meters.
12 And
in Seir dwelt the Horites aforetime, but the children of Esau succeeded them;
and they destroyed them from before them, and dwelt in their stead; as Israel
did unto the land of his possession, which the LORD gave unto them.--
13 Now
rise up, and get you over the brook Zered.' And we went over the brook
Zered. 14 And the days in which we came from Kadesh-barnea, until we
were come over the brook Zered, were thirty and eight years; until all the
generation, even the men of war, were consumed from the midst of the camp, as
the LORD swore unto them.
The generation simply
died out.
15 Moreover
the hand of the LORD was against them, to discomfit them from the midst of the
camp, until they were consumed. 16 So it came to pass, when all the
men of war were consumed and dead from among the people,
The only remaining
people from that generation were non-rebels.
17 that
the LORD spoke unto me saying: 18 'Thou art this day to pass over the
border of Moab, even Ar; 19 and when thou come nigh over against the
children of Ammon, harass them not, nor contend with them; for I will not give
thee of the land of the children of Ammon for a possession; because I have
given it unto the children of Lot for a possession.--
They were from Lot and
the Merit of Avraham protected them.
20 That
also is accounted a land of Rephaim: Rephaim dwelt therein aforetime; but the
Ammonites call them Zamzummim, 21 a people great, and many, and tall,
as the Anakim; but the LORD destroyed them before them; and they succeeded
them, and dwelt in their stead; 22 as He did for the children of
Esau, that dwell in Seir, when He destroyed the Horites from before them; and
they succeeded them, and dwelt in their stead even unto this day;
Esav and children being
hunters and fighters destroyed them.
23 and
the Avvim, that dwelt in villages as far as Gaza, the Caphtorim, that came
forth out of Caphtor, destroyed them, and dwelt in their stead.--
So the Bnei Esav had
land from Gaza to Akaba. But the vast majority were in the area close to Akaba.
24 Rise
ye up, take your journey, and pass over the valley of Arnon; behold, I have
given into thy hand Sihon the Amorite, king of Heshbon, and his land; begin to
possess it, and contend with him in battle. 25 This day will I begin
to put the dread of thee and the fear of thee upon the peoples that are under
the whole heaven, who, when they hear the report of thee, shall tremble, and be
in anguish because of thee.'
Sihon was one of the
guardians of the gate keeper into Eretz Yisrael from the east along with Og.
26 And
I sent messengers out of the wilderness of Kedemoth unto Sihon king of Heshbon
with words of peace, saying: 27 'Let me pass through thy land; I will
go along by the highway, I will neither turn unto the right hand nor to the
left. 28 Thou shalt sell me food for money, that I may eat; and give
me water for money, that I may drink; only let me pass through on my
feet; 29 as the children of Esau that dwell in Seir, and the Moabites
that dwell in Ar, did unto me; until I shall pass over the Jordan into the land
which the LORD our God giveth us.'
I plead with Esav our
brother and tried with Sihon. However, Sihon was not a brother like Esav and
had no merits.
30 But
Sihon king of Heshbon would not let us pass by him; for the LORD thy God
hardened his spirit, and made his heart obstinate, that He might deliver him
into thy hand, as appears this day.
So HASHEM, Yisborach,
delivered him into our hands.
31 And
the LORD said unto me: 'Behold, I have begun to deliver up Sihon and his land
before thee; begin to possess his land.' 32 Then Sihon came out
against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Jahaz. 33 And the
LORD our God delivered him up before us; and we smote him, and his sons, and
all his people. 34 And we took all his cities at that time, and
utterly destroyed every city, the men, and the women, and the little ones; we
left none remaining; 35 only the cattle we took for a prey unto
ourselves, with the spoil of the cities which we had taken. 36 From
Aroer, which is on the edge of the valley of Arnon, and from the city that is
in the valley, even unto Gilead, there was not a city too high for us: the LORD
our God delivered up all before us.
Then we conquered them
and took the spoils for ourselves.
37 Only
to the land of the children of Ammon thou came not near; all the side of the
river Jabbok, and the cities of the hill-country, and wheresoever the LORD our
God forbade us.
We can use the water
from the brook but the land is theirs.
3:1
Then we turned, and went up the way to Bashan; and Og the king of Bashan came
out against us, he and all his people, unto battle at Edrei. 2 And
the LORD said unto me: 'Fear him not; for I have delivered him, and all his
people, and his land, into thy hand; and thou shalt do unto him as thou didst
unto Sihon king of the Amorites, who dwelt at Heshbon.'
Og was a giant of a man
and king of Heshbon and stood in the way of conquering Eretz Canaan.
3 So
the LORD our God delivered into our hand Og also, the king of Bashan, and all
his people; and we smote him until none was left to him
remaining. 4 And we took all his cities at that time; there was not a
city which we took not from them; threescore cities, all the region of Argob,
the kingdom of Og in Bashan. 5 All these were fortified cities, with
high walls, gates, and bars; beside the unwalled towns a great many. 6 And
we utterly destroyed them, as we did unto Sihon king of Heshbon, utterly
destroying every city, the men, and the women, and the little
ones. 7 But all the cattle, and the spoil of the cities, we took for
a prey unto ourselves. 8 And we took the land at that time out of the
hand of the two kings of the Amorites that were beyond the Jordan, from the
valley of Arnon unto mount Hermon-- 9 which Hermon the Sidonians call
Sirion, and the Amorites call it Snir--
This is at the base of
Har Hermon before the Aliyah from the Kiriat Shemona road.
10 all
the cities of the plain, and all Gilead, and all Bashan, unto Salcah and Edrei,
cities of the kingdom of Og in Bashan.-- 11 For only Og king of
Bashan remained of the remnant of the Rephaim; behold, his bedstead was a
bedstead of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the children of Ammon? nine cubits was
the length thereof, and four cubits the breadth of it, after the cubit of a
man.--
The bed was 4.05 meters
13.5 ft long and 1.80 meters 6 feet wide. My bed is built that I have room to
lie on my back or side with my hands usually inside and able to stretch my hand
and feet. Chances are he was the size of 3 meters or 9 feet tall. This makes
him slightly taller than the man mentioned in the Guinness Book of Records. He
would be slightly taller than Gaolyad who confronted Dovid.
12 And
this land we took in possession at that time; from Aroer, which is by the
valley of Arnon, and half the hill-country of Gilead, and the cities thereof,
gave I unto the Reubenites and to the Gadites; 13 and the rest of
Gilead, and all Bashan, the kingdom of Og, gave I unto the half-tribe of
Manasseh; all the region of Argob--all that Bashan is called the land of
Rephaim. 14 Jair the son of Manasseh took all the region of Argob,
unto the border of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and called them, even
Bashan, after his own name, Havvoth-jair, unto this day.-- 15 And I
gave Gilead unto Machir.
The strip of land from
the other side of the Yarden or modern Adam Bridge to probably what we posses
on the Golan Heights today (maybe further towards Damascus).
16 And
unto the Reubenites and unto the Gadites I gave from Gilead even unto the
valley of Arnon, the middle of the valley for a border; even unto the river
Jabbok, which is the border of the children of Ammon; 17 the Arabah
also, the Jordan being the border thereof, from Kinnereth even unto the sea of
the Arabah, the Salt Sea, under the slopes of Pisgah eastward.
The Yabbok River today separates
Yarden from Yisrael but we possessed both sides to the Dead Sea as ours then
but today not.
18 And
I commanded you at that time, saying: 'The LORD your God hath given you this
land to possess it; ye shall pass over armed before your brethren the children
of Israel, all the men of valor.
Now we have a section of
the men of the two and a half tribes leaving their womenfolk while they conquer
the land.
19 But
your wives, and your little ones, and your cattle--I know that ye have much
cattle--shall abide in your cities which I have given you; 20 until
the LORD give rest unto your brethren, as unto you, and they also possess the
land which the LORD your God giveth them beyond the Jordan; then shall ye
return every man unto his possession, which I have given you. 21 And
I commanded Joshua at that time, saying: 'Thine eyes have seen all that the
LORD your God hath done unto these two kings; so shall the LORD do unto all the
kingdoms whither thou go over.
Remember the miracles of
HASHEM in battle and have courage.
22 Ye
shall not fear them; for the LORD your God, He it is that fights for you.
HASHEM goes before you
to fight your battle so fear not.
Rabbi Yosef Ben Porat Shlita corelated the troubles
with Hamas and Hezballah with the attempt to draft Charedim into the army. It
seems that the more the GOI (Gov. of Israel) bothers the Charedim the larger
the trouble. Draft notices without agreement and Iran starts up with you via
threats.
When we don’t fast on
Tisha B’Av.
The Brisker Rav aka Yitzchak Vevel Soloveitchik,
HaLevi, the son of Rav Chaim of Brisk.
Was very mediatic on the observance of Mitzvos. When it comes time to fast for
an Orthodox Jew, other fast days can be compromised if one is slightly ill.
However, Tisha B’Av or Yom Kippur one should fast.
There is an exclusion to fasting that becomes a Mitzvah
to eat. That is if one will put his life in danger fasting. This applies to
cancer patients, diabetics, many heart patients, kidney patients, some pregnant
women, a women closely after childbirth, etc. When one’s life is in danger, one
must do as the doctor says and it is the Mitzvah of Pekuach Nefesh to eat.
There are criteria set by medical doctors. If a patient feels so ill close to
losing consciousness or so weak that they feel danger in fasting don’t ask a
Rabbi – just go and drink or eat.
In my particular case, the cardiologist told me that I
have to drink because of my medication and I would be in danger if I didn’t. I
went via my son to Rabbi Yona Gewirtz Shlita one of the outstanding Talmidim of
Rabbi Moshe Feinstein and one of the leading Kosher Inspectors of the Star K.
My question was, if I am not fasting since I am drinking
quantities of water as prescribed does it make sense to fast? The answer was:
Since you are not fasting, you may eat; but not to feast but to eat normally.
Normal healthy vibrant people should fast and the
strictness involved is to LIVE the Mitzvos and not die over them except for
three reasons.

Trainer recovers from his injury.
TV12 .– told by Ohr
Shezaf and English R. Pauli
Ohr was doing his tour of duty with (Givati?). They entered a
building. Pulled up a carpet and saw tunnel shaft. The shout was “Shaft”
meaning get back. Ohr ju,ped back about 2 or so feet. Then boom! 5 of his army
buddies died that day on a Kiddush HASHEM. He was bleeding from a hole in his
arm and had holes through his shoes from shrapnel.
He knew what he was going to have to deal with. He ended up in the
hospital with a broken right arm and shrapnel and operations in his left leg.
He is glad to be alive and after six months started running slowly
and for shorth distances. It is a bit of Tisha B’Av for him.

From my Blogspot 2009 on Tisha B’Av
Our Sages taught that the
first Holy Temple was destroyed because of the three sins
which Israel committed in that generation: idolatry, forbidden
relationships, and murder. There was not a place in
the Land of Israel where they did not worship idols. The
Land was destroyed only when seven successive high courts had worshiped idols,
when the people had desecrated Shabbos, stopped the children from learning
Torah, ceased the recital of the Shema in the morning and at night, and no
longer felt shame in front of each other.
The second Holy Temple was destroyed because of baseless
hatred among the people, because they did not admonish one another, they
embarrassed scholars, they didn't differentiate between the great and the
small, they lacked men of strong faith and courage, and they based their
judgments on 'their' strict interpretation of Torah law, and would not make
simple concessions to one another, and so 'sinas chinom' (baseless hatred), was
rampant. If we look closely at events, we can see that it was this baseless
hatred, cruelty, and disrespect among ourselves, that has kept our Third and
final Temple from being built, thus ending our exile.
Today this problem among ourselves, still exists. Until we
try harder to change the negative feelings that encompass us, and light up our
souls with love and respect for each other and all mankind, we will remain in
darkness and emptiness. This is the only remedy that will hasten our return,
and bring the world to its highest level. We the Jewish People have been chosen
to set this example for the rest of the World.
There is a promise that Tisha B'Av will be turned into a day of Joy. A day when
we will once more be a people with a home, never having to wander again. A day
when our beloved G-d will once again dwell with us in
our Holy Temple in Jerusalem. Let us work towards this
goal.
The Talmud (Brachos 32b), teaches that when the Temple was destroyed,
all the Gates of Heaven were closed, except for one. That is the Gate of Tears.
This Tisha B'Av, we must remember that the tears we shed for the destruction,
are precisely those tears which will bring about our redemption. We must
resolve to bring this redemption speedily in our days.
Tisha B'Av is a fast day, like Yom Kippur, from the evening of the 8th
of Av. until the next evening. This will culminate the Three Week mourning
period by the Jewish People. On Tisha B'Av we are forbidden to eat or drink,
bathe, use any creams or oils, wear leather shoes or have marital relations.
The reason we refrain from these things is to minimize our pleasures, so that
we (our soul) can feel the sadness over the many tragedies that occurred on
Tisha B'Av.
On this same day (Tisha B'Av) 9th of Av,
throughout history some of the tragedies that befell the Jewish people are:
1. The incident of the spies
slandering the land of Israel with the subsequent decree to wander in the
desert for 40 years, in which the men between the ages of 20-60 perished over
that time and did not enter the land.
2. The destruction of the First and
Second Holy Temples in Jerusalem by Nebuchadnezzar, King
of Babylon and by the Romans in 70 CE.
3. The fall of Betar and the end of
the Bar Kochba revolt against the Romans.
4. The Jews
of England were expelled in 1290.
5. The Jews of Spain were
expelled in 1492.
On the night of Tisha B'Av we read Eicha, the book of Lamentations, written by
the prophet Yimiyahu (Jeremiah). We also say Kinos, special poems that recount
the tragedies that have taken place in Jewish History.
Since learning Torah is the
lifeblood of the Jewish people, enabling us to learn and enjoy the
understanding of the Holy word of G-d, we are forbidden to learn Torah except
those parts that deal with the calamities which the Jewish people have
suffered. These readings are for reflection on the past, and why, and what can
happen in the future, unless we change the reasons for our downfalls. 'May this
be the last Tisha B'Av that we must observe!

We
will mourn and fast on 9 B'Av since the Bet HaMikdash was burned to the ground.
The fire was ignited on 9 B'Av in the afternoon and burned through the 10th of
Av. Therefore the restrictions of "the 9 days" continue until after
midday on the 10th of Av. Normally the custom is to refrain from eating meat
and wine, saying Shechehiyanu, listening to music, bathing, doing laundry,
shaving and haircuts, until after noon on the 10th of Av. One may make a Seudas
Mitzvah (like a Brit) on Friday morning, with meat and wine. Source: Kitzur

Thursday
is the fast of 9 B'Av which commemorates 5 tragedies that befell the Jewish
people on that date:
-
It was decreed that the generation which left Egypt would remain in the desert
for 40 years and not enter the land of Israel, after believing the inaccurate
report of 10 of the 12 spies in the year 2449.
- The first Bet HaMikdash (Holy Temple) was destroyed on 9 B'Av in the
year 3339.
- The second Bet HaMikdash (Holy Temple) was destroyed on 9 B'Av about
1948 years ago.
- The city of Betar was captured and tens of thousands of Jews were
killed in the year 3893.
- The wicked Turnus Rufus plowed the site of the Bet HaMikdash and its
surroundings and renamed it Aelia Capitolina, also in the year 3893.
Since these tragedies occurred on 9 B'Av, it was decreed as a day of fasting
and mourning.

Other tragedies that happened on 9 B'Av:
- 4,000 Jews were expelled from England by King Edward I in the year 5050 (18
July 1290)
- 300,000 Jews were expelled from Spain by Isabella of Castile and Ferdinand II
of Aragon in the year 5252 (2 August 1492)

FYI: Due
to the increase in regional tensions, the U.S. Embassy in Jerusalem is
continuously and closely monitoring the security situation. The U.S. Embassy
reminds U.S. citizens of the continued need for caution and increased personal
security awareness (including knowing the location of the nearest shelter) as
security incidents, including mortar and rocket fire and unmanned aircraft
system (UAS) intrusions, often take place without any warning. The security
environment is complex and can change quickly.
U.S. citizens are encouraged to
read the current Travel Advisory and Country Information Page for
Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza, that advises U.S. citizens to be aware of the
continuing risks of travel to Israel, the West Bank, and Gaza due to the
security situation and heightened regional tensions and warns against travel to
Gaza and to northern Israel within 2.5 miles of the Lebanese and Syrian
borders.
Increased regional tensions can
cause airlines to cancel and/or curtail flights into and out of Israel.
Be prepared:
- It could take
several days or longer for passengers to re-book new tickets to depart;
the U.S. Embassy does not assist with this process.
- Ensure you and your
family have your travel documents in order and are prepared to
travel.
- Closely monitor
local and international news.

Hamlet found something rotten in
Denmark and the Teiman Abuse Case. An IDF soldier was dismissed Wednesday night from reserve
duty after being interviewed an hour earlier on Channel 14 about
the recent Force 100 arrests. … Journalist Yinon Magal wrote: "The leaders
of the refusers who, in front of the cameras, called 'do not volunteer for
reserves,' the IDF embraced. The soldier who came to defend the name of his
comrades, whom the military system prosecutes and slanders before the whole
world, he was dismissed within five minutes. Something here is very rotten.
Something here requires a complete reset." https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/394305
