Parsha Vaetchanan Part 2, Eikev stories and miracles and swords of Iron updates.

This week my granddaughter got married so the news is terse.

Miracle of the week: The terrorist who blew up with the 8kilogram bomb was close to a Synagogue filled with 80men and children.

Parsha Vaetchanan Part 2

6:1 Now this is the commandment, the statutes, and the ordinances, which the LORD your God commanded to teach you, that ye might do them in the land whither ye go over to possess it—

The Commandments are linked to the land. Shmita, Teruma, Maaser, Orlah are linked to the land even without a Mikdash and Korbanos. Add that and Yovel and Yebum instead of Hatlitza of the widow of the childless brother. Parcels for inheritance and cities of refugee for the accidental man slaughterer.

2 that thou might fear the LORD thy God, to keep all His statutes and His commandments, which I command thee, thou, and thy son, and thy son's son, all the days of thy life; and that thy days may be prolonged.

So periods in history people died young and could be happy to see as children and grandchildren and then periods of greatgrandchildren like Yosef saw. The goal is to spread Torah and Mitzvos to your son and son’s son. Then your days will be prolonged.

3 Hear therefore, O Israel, and observe to do it; that it may be well with thee, and that ye may increase mightily, as the LORD, the God of thy fathers, hath promised unto thee--a land flowing with milk and honey.

Observance will yield a land flowing with milk and honey.

4 Hear, O Israel: the LORD our God, the LORD is one.

The declaration of the Unity of G-D with the Ayn of the Shema and the Dalet of the Echud producing Ayd or witness to the Unity.

5 And thou shalt love the LORD thy God with all thy heart, and with all thy soul, and with all thy might.

Unconditional love for the CREATOR wholehearted, with your interior and exterior being and all your money.

6 And these words, which I command thee this day, shall be upon thy heart;

24/7 your heart and head shall be in tune with the L-RD and the Commandments.

7 and thou shalt teach them diligently unto thy children, and shalt talk of them when thou sit in thy house, and when thou walk by the way, and when thou lie down, and when thou rise up.

It does not suffice that you observe Torah for yourself, but it is imperative that you teach the generation(s) after you the Torah and Mitzvos. Every second of everyday you sit in your house, go outside, lie down and say the blessings and rise up thanking G-D for restoring your soul unto yourself.

8 And thou shalt bind them for a sign upon thy hand, and they shall be for frontlets between thine eyes.

The Tephillin are on your weaker hand but bound there so you feel them and a place that the Buddhist call the third or spiritual eye on your forehead. A powerful contact spiritually to the True World.

9 And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates.

So when you go in or our of your house, HASHEM is before your thoughts.

10 And it shall be, when the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land which He swore unto thy fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give thee--great and goodly cities, which thou didst not build, 11 and houses full of all good things, which thou didst not fill, and cisterns hewn out, which thou didst not hew, vineyards and olive-trees, which thou didst not plant, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied--

The uncle of Rabbi Beryl Wein, my teacher Rabbi Tuvia Wein Ztzal told me that when he came to live in Eretz Yisrael, he was first sent to an abandon Arab House in Ramla Yisrael. There was a grape vine that produced close to 1000 kilograms of grapes for eating and making wine that he did not plant.

12 then beware lest thou forget the LORD, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. 13 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; and Him shalt thou serve, and by His name shalt thou swear.

Although it is the custom today not to swear by the NAME of the L-RD, still one would do so when required by Halachic Law with great timidation.

14 Ye shall not go after other gods, of the gods of the peoples that are round about you; 15 for a jealous God, even the LORD thy God, is in the midst of thee; lest the anger of the LORD thy God be kindled against thee, and He destroy thee from off the face of the earth.

The human term jealousy seems to me just a humanization of the L-RD for nothing exists from the sub-atomic particle to galaxy clusters without the will of the L-RD. So in practical terms, one cannot get jealous here but rather putting it in our terms like a man or woman scorned by the spouse.

16 Ye shall not try the LORD your God, as ye tried Him in Massah. 17 Ye shall diligently keep the commandments of the LORD your God, and His testimonies, and His statutes, which He hath commanded thee. 18 And thou shalt do that which is right and good in the sight of the LORD; that it may be well with thee, and that thou mayest go in and possess the good land which the LORD swore unto thy fathers, 19 to thrust out all thine enemies from before thee, as the LORD hath spoken.

The L-RD does not have to prove HIMSELF to you, but you shall do HIS will and it is stated in Avos “Do HIS will so that HE will cancel out others will before yours.”

20 When thy son asks thee in time to come, saying: 'What mean the testimonies, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which the LORD our God hath commanded you?

You shall educate your children in the ways and laws of G-D.

21 then thou shalt say unto thy son: 'We were Pharaoh's bondmen in Egypt; and the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 22 And the LORD showed signs and wonders, great and sore, upon Egypt, upon Pharaoh, and upon all his house, before our eyes. 23 And He brought us out from thence, that He might bring us in, to give us the land which He swore unto our fathers. 24 And the LORD commanded us to do all these statutes, to fear the LORD our God, for our good always, that He might preserve us alive, as it is at this day.

Not only the ways and laws, but HIS love and keeping us.

25 And it shall be righteousness unto us, if we observe to do all this commandment before the LORD our God, as He hath commanded us.

We are the underlings and if we observe the commandments then we are rewarded.

 7:1 When the LORD thy God shall bring thee into the land whither thou go to possess it, and shall cast out many nations before thee, the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Amorite, and the Canaanite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, seven nations greater and mightier than thou; 2 and when the LORD thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and thou shalt smite them; then thou shalt utterly destroy them; thou shalt make no covenant with them, nor show mercy unto them;

Although the so-called “Palestinian People” that did not exist before 1968CE claim it is there land, it is imperative not to make a covenant with them. (Now tell that to the leftist in Israel who grew up without really reading and understanding scripture. All the more so believing.)

3 neither shalt thou make marriages with them: thy daughter thou shalt not give unto his son, nor his daughter shalt thou take unto thy son. 4 For he will turn away thy son from following Me, that they may serve other gods; so will the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and He will destroy thee quickly.

It is not always that the wicked or the atheist leftist die for their non-belief but rather, G-D takes one or two righteous to save the lives of hundreds born under mal-education.

5 But thus shall ye deal with them: ye shall break down their altars, and dash in pieces their pillars, and hew down their Asherim, and burn their graven images with fire.

Therefore anything from the nations or idolatry must be destroyed.

6 For thou art a holy people unto the LORD thy God: the LORD thy God hath chosen thee to be His own treasure, out of all peoples that are upon the face of the earth. 7 The LORD did not set His love upon you, nor choose you, because ye were more in number than any people--for ye were the fewest of all peoples--

You are not quantity but quality.

8 but because the LORD loved you, and because He would keep the oath which He swore unto your fathers, hath the LORD brought you out with a mighty hand, and redeemed you out of the house of bondage, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt.

He promised Avraham, Yitzchak and Yacov and kept his promise.

9 Know therefore that the LORD thy God, He is God; the faithful God, who keeps covenant and mercy with them that love Him and keep His commandments to a thousand generations;

The wicked cause suffering for a few generations but the righteous trigger love for over 1000 generations.

10 and repays them that hate Him to their face, to destroy them; He will not be slack to him that hates Him, He will repay him to his face.

Measure for measure Meda Knegged Meda.

11 Thou shalt therefore keep the commandment, and the statutes, and the ordinances, which I command thee this day, to do them.

The Parsha concludes with following the Mitzvos and observing them.

Parsha Eikev

Last week I did not mention the six cities of Refuge that Moshe set aside. Three of which were on the other of the Yarden one in the Golan and one a bit below the Kinneret and one closer to the area of the Dead Sea. This land belongs to us but in the meantime the little king in Yarden has control of it. At this point in history and current events it is even good for us that he rules and opposes ISIS and Hamas except for some lip service to the later for internal consumption. But in the future, we will inherit all of Syria and the area over the Yarden if not the whole country the lands closer to the Jordan River Valley almost down to Akaka. Up into the second paragraph of the Shema in this week’s Parsha we are receiving a pep talk to the fighting men of Israel about not being afraid to go into battle to conquer the land. I took my friend’s Seth letter to his friends and the soldiers in his family where his son as a Rabbi gave pep-talks to soldiers going into Gaza. I wrote about the fact in my news updates but a very large amount of soldiers asked for army undershirts with Tzitzis which repel perspiration made out of material where the cloth will not get bacteria to need changing or smell from the lack of bathing during a conflict. The young men get a Mitzvah and feel that the Tzitzis, Tephillin, Tehillim and Mezuzos are guarding over them. The amount of at least war observant Jews has climbed amazingly to proportions of the fighting men that we have not seen since the days of Bar Kochba which ended in 136 CE.

7:12 And it shall come to pass, because ye hearken to these ordinances, and keep, and do them, that the LORD thy God shall keep with thee the covenant and the mercy which He swore unto thy fathers, 13 and He will love thee, and bless thee, and multiply thee; He will also bless the fruit of thy body and the fruit of thy land, thy corn and thy wine and thine oil, the increase of thy cattle and the young of thy flock, in the land which He swore unto thy fathers to give thee.

HASHEM has love for you and wants to bless you but you have to behave. Only follow the Mitzvos, do good deeds and love your fellow man is it that hard?

14 Thou shalt be blessed above all peoples; there shall not be male or female barren among you, or among your cattle.

A person is not complete without a husband or wife and a marriage is not complete without children. I do not want to get into the maddest in today’s society of the abomination (HASHEM calls the act that way among males Lev. 18:22 & Lev. 20:13 plus once more in Deut.) of same sex couples. The joy and blessing of a child and teaching and producing more offspring cannot be measured in money. The worst tragedy in the world is losing a child.

15 And the LORD will take away from thee all sickness; and He will put none of the evil diseases of Egypt, which thou know, upon thee, but will lay them upon all them that hate thee.

The condition is based on observance level of the Nation. Some might be well and some might be ill if the Mitzvos are not followed. However, if everybody follows the Mitzvos.

16 And thou shalt consume all the peoples that the LORD thy God shall deliver unto thee; thine eye shall not pity them; neither shalt thou serve their gods; for that will be a snare unto thee.

The left here and in the world are shouting pity the poor Palestinians. DO NOT PITY A CRUEL NATION WHO STOLE YOUR LAND! Pity the compassionate. If my internal feeling in my Neshama is correct, it will not be long before the repercussions upon those who criticized Yisrael will rebound upon them and their places of worship by the cruel nation turned loose in their own countries. G-D will not pity them on YOM HAHU! (Zechariah, Yeshayahu)

17 If thou shalt say in thy heart: 'These nations are more than I; how can I dispossess them?' 18 thou shalt not be afraid of them; thou shalt well remember what the LORD thy God did unto Pharaoh, and unto all Egypt: 19 the great trials which thine eyes saw, and the signs, and the wonders, and the mighty hand, and the outstretched arm, whereby the LORD thy God brought thee out; so shall the LORD thy God do unto all the peoples of whom thou art afraid.

Based on my meager knowledge of the Prophets and Writings, we shall see these signs, wonders and miracles in the future. What we saw in the War of Independence, Six Day War, Yom Kippur War etc. up to these last weeks are nothing compared to the Nissim and Niflaos that we shall see when the final redemption of Yisrael and mankind come about. The righteous of nations and those of us righteous or with a potential of righteousness in Yisrael will witness this if not today or tomorrow very soon.

20 Moreover the LORD thy God will send the hornet among them, until they that are left, and they that hide themselves, perish from before thee. 21 Thou shalt not be affrighted at them; for the LORD thy God is in the midst of thee, a God great and awful.

We shall see what happens to the most power and even our munitions will run low the percentage that survives will see Nissim and Niflaos (miracles and wonders) that have not been seen since the days of Moshe and Yehoshua. If you think that this cannot happen see the battle of “The Valley of Tears” in the Yom Kippur War with Avigdor Kahalani.

22 And the LORD thy God will cast out those nations before thee by little and little; thou may not consume them quickly, lest the beasts of the field increase upon thee.

When I first came to my Yishuv there were plenty of wild animals, snakes and scorpions. After years I saw a weasel this week near the fence of our Yishuv and from time to time a turtle but most have gone into the woods. When the Moshiach comes we will be able to walk or drive into Lebanon unto the Turkish Border and we will have a treaty with the Kurds allowing us water from the Euphrates and them to live in peace. I do not know how this will work but we will get our land that HASHEM promised us. Already in Syria and Lebanon there is infighting that will pave the way in the future for us to enter and live in these places.

23 But the LORD thy God shall deliver them up before thee, and shall discomfit them with a great discomfiture, until they be destroyed.

We see ISIS from Iraq fighting the Syrians and Hezballah and cleaning up the world from each of them before us today even though Moshe originally was talking about the Nations of Canaan. For “Maaseh Avos Siman Le Banim” (the deeds of the fathers are a sign for the children) – from our Sages.

24 And He shall deliver their kings into thy hand, and thou shalt make their name to perish from under heaven; there shall no man be able to stand against thee, until thou have destroyed them. 25 The graven images of their gods shall ye burn with fire; thou shalt not covet the silver or the gold that is on them, nor take it unto thee, lest thou be snared therein; for it is an abomination to the LORD thy God. 26 And thou shalt not bring an abomination into thy house, and be accursed like unto it; thou shalt utterly detest it, and thou shalt utterly abhor it; for it is a devoted thing.

We have seen with our own eyes how the Middle-East has changed radically in a few years and there is more to come. Over-night in Egypt arose the Muslim Brotherhood and over-night it was overthrown. So too the “redemption of HASHEM is like a blink of the eye” – Talmud Bavli Eruvin.

… 8:6 And thou shalt keep the commandments of the LORD thy God, to walk in His ways, and to fear Him.

This is not the first time Moshe has mentioned this but it is good for us lest we forget.

7 For the LORD thy God brings thee into a good land, a land of brooks of water, of fountains and depths, springing forth in valleys and hills; 8 a land of wheat and barley, and vines and fig-trees and pomegranates; a land of olive-trees and honey;

The olive trees are also for pure oil and the honey is from dates. These are the 7 species that require a special blessing after eating an oil’s bulk.

9 a land wherein thou shalt eat bread without scarceness, thou shalt not lack any thing in it; a land whose stones are iron, and out of whose hills thou may dig brass. 10 And thou shalt eat and be satisfied, and bless the LORD thy God for the good land which He hath given thee.

This indicates mineral wealth as the Moshiach gets closer we have discovered gas and soon there are good chances that oil will be discovered. As the Torah Observance increases so does the wealth it is part of HASHEM’s equation of life for the Bnei Yisrael.

11 Beware lest thou forget the LORD thy God, in not keeping His commandments, and His ordinances, and His statutes, which I command thee this day; 12 lest when thou hast eaten and art satisfied, and hast built goodly houses, and dwelt therein; 13 and when thy herds and thy flocks multiply, and thy silver and thy gold is multiplied, and all that thou hast is multiplied; 14 then thy heart be lifted up, and thou forget the LORD thy God, who brought thee forth out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; 15 who led thee through the great and dreadful wilderness, wherein were serpents, fiery serpents, and scorpions, and thirsty ground where was no water; who brought thee forth water out of the rock of flint; 16 who fed thee in the wilderness with manna, which thy fathers knew not, that He might afflict thee, and that He might prove thee, to do thee good at thy latter end; 17 and thou say in thy heart: 'My power and the might of my hand hath gotten me this wealth.' 18 But thou shalt remember the LORD thy God, for it is He that gives you power to get wealth, that He may establish His covenant which He swore unto thy fathers, as it is this day.

We must always remember it is not our brains, strength or inheritance that gives us wealth and food but from HASHEM. The owner of Hadar Crackers got a disease which was killing him. He could not eat. He said, “I have enough grain to feed Yerushalayim for months, but cannot enjoy it.” He recognized the power of HASHEM.

19 And it shall be, if thou shalt forget the LORD thy God, and walk after other gods, and serve them, and worship them, I forewarn you this day that ye shall surely perish. 20 As the nations that the LORD makes to perish before you, so shall ye perish; because ye would not hearken unto the voice of the LORD your God.

Externally many of the people who died in the Shoah were more religious than most of us. Were they sacrifices to spare us or was it only external. Every once in a while my friend Jack Kamplansky asks, “I had righteous parents, brothers and sisters and how come I survived and they not as they were more religious than I?” Nobody has the answer only HASHEM Yisborach. The questions are there did they get caught in the Holocaust as a Gezaira and miraculously a few like Yisrael Meir and Naphtali Lau survived to rebuild Eretz Yisrael and Judaism from the ashes. We do not know but something causes the miracles to happen to us in Eretz Yisrael and something caused 30% of the Jews to be wiped out in the last generation and only HASHEM knows why.

We are now told not to fear our enemies and they will use every dirty trick in the book to try to slaughter us in every cruel way like the mutilation of the bodies of the three boys which I refused to describe. It is bad enough to murder but there is a sickness to mutilate a body.

9:1 Hear, O Israel: thou art to pass over the Jordan this day, to go in to dispossess nations greater and mightier than thyself, cities great and fortified up to heaven, 2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom thou know, and of whom thou hast heard say: 'Who can stand before the sons of Anak?' 3 Know therefore this day, that the LORD thy God is He who goes over before thee as a devouring fire; He will destroy them, and He will bring them down before thee; so shalt thou drive them out, and make them to perish quickly, as the LORD hath spoken unto thee.

There is nothing to fear but HASHEM for HASHEM will fight your battles and bring them down. Moshe then describes the rebelliousness of the nation and that HASHEM wanted to destroy them. Perhaps herein lies the answer to Jack’s question because the righteous ones were caught with the wicked as the Gezaira went down for we did not have a Moshe, servant of G-D, to pray for us.

… 25 So I fell down before the LORD the forty days and forty nights that I fell down; because the LORD had said He would destroy you. 26 And I prayed unto the LORD, and said: 'O Lord GOD, destroy not Thy people and Thine inheritance, that Thou hast redeemed through Thy greatness, that Thou hast brought forth out of Egypt with a mighty hand. 27 Remember Thy servants, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; look not unto the stubbornness of this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin; 28 lest the land whence Thou broughtest us out say: Because the LORD was not able to bring them into the land which He promised unto them, and because He hated them, He hath brought them out to slay them in the wilderness. 29 Yet they are Thy people and Thine inheritance, that Thou didst bring out by Thy great power and by Thy outstretched arm.

Moshe then goes on to describe what HASHEM told him through the death of Aaron.

…10:12 And now, Israel, what does the LORD thy God require of thee, but to fear the LORD thy God, to walk in all His ways, and to love Him, and to serve the LORD thy God with all thy heart and with all thy soul;

And now, O Israel: Even though you did all this, His mercy and His affection are still upon you, and with all that you have sinned against Him, He demands nothing of you, except only to fear [the Lord, your God,…] Only to fear [the Lord your God,…]: Our Rabbis derived from this verse [“And now… what does… God demand of you”] that everything is in the hands of Heaven except the fear of Heaven (Ber. 33b).

13 to keep for thy good the commandments of the LORD, and His statutes, which I command thee this day?

12 – 13 Don’t ask what HASHEM can do for you but to do what HASHEM wants and then HE will bless you.

To keep the commandments of the Lord: and this too, is not for nothing, but-for your good-that you should receive a reward.

14 Behold, unto the LORD thy God belongs the heaven, and the heaven of heavens, the earth, with all that therein is.

To the average person this understanding was equivalent in Moshe’s day as to saying from the smallest sub-atomic particle to the vast universe around us HASHEM is all encompassing to our understanding today. Rashi interprets this to mean how desired Yisrael is of everything in the universe.

Behold, to the Lord your God belong: everything, and even so-“Only your forefathers the Lord desired”-out of everything [i.e., the whole universe].

15 Only the LORD had a delight in thy fathers to love them, and He chose their seed after them, even you, above all peoples, as it is this day. 16 Circumcise therefore the foreskin of your heart, and be no more stiffnecked.

The foreskin of your heart: Heb. עָרְלַת לְבַבְכֶם, the blockage and covering of your heart.

It is as if you have Orlah on your heart and you need to cut away the blemish so that the pure blood from the pure heart will make your body ready for the days of Moshiach. Ah you say that the Moshiach hasn’t come yet! If so, perhaps we still have to purify ourselves to truly do the Mitzvos Le Shem Shamayim.

17 For the LORD your God, He is God of gods, and Lord of lords, the great God, the mighty, and the awful, who regards not persons, nor takes reward. 18 He doth execute justice for the fatherless and widow, and loves the stranger, in giving him food and raiment.

Try to remember the orphan and widow and be nice to the Ger. What happens if the Ger becomes poor due to bad circumstances and he has no family? – Then give him food and raiment!

19 Love ye therefore the stranger; for ye were strangers in the land of Egypt.

You should not regard a person because he or she is blond or black and in your youth you were bullied or attacked by one of these groups of people but remember that the blood or black is now your fellow Jew and just as you love an Ashkenazi, Yemenite or Sephardi so too shall you love the Ger or Giyores. Remember Boaz did not refrain from marriage with Ruth and the Moshiach came out of it.

20 Thou shalt fear the LORD thy God; Him shalt thou serve; and to Him shalt thou cleave, and by His name shalt thou swear. 21 He is thy glory, and He is thy God, that hath done for thee these great and tremendous things, which thine eyes have seen. 22 Thy fathers went down into Egypt with threescore and ten persons; and now the LORD thy God hath made thee as the stars of heaven for multitude.

11:1 Therefore thou shalt love the LORD thy God, and keep His charge, and His statutes, and His ordinances, and His commandments, always. … 8 Therefore shall ye keep all the commandment which I command thee this day, that ye may be strong, and go in and possess the land, whither ye go over to possess it; 9 and that ye may prolong your days upon the land, which the LORD swore unto your fathers to give unto them and to their seed, a land flowing with milk and honey.

As one should not be afraid of the Anak one should also go and possess the land promise to Avraham, Yitzchak and Yacov and with the Mitzvos you will find a land flowing with milk from almonds plus your flocks and herds and the honey from the dates dripping from the trees.

10 For the land, whither thou go in to possess it, is not as the land of Egypt, from whence ye came out, where thou didst sow thy seed, and didst water it with thy foot, as a garden of herbs; 11 but the land, whither ye go over to possess it, is a land of hills and valleys, and drinks water as the rain of heaven comes down; 12 a land which the LORD thy God cares for; the eyes of the LORD thy God are always upon it, from the beginning of the year even unto the end of the year.

Remember that in Parsha Bechukosai that this is a condition that we must observe the Mitzvos.

Now we learn the second paragraph of the Shema.

13 And it shall come to pass, if ye shall hearken diligently unto My commandments which I command you this day, to love the LORD your God, and to serve Him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 that I will give the rain of your land in its season, the former rain and the latter rain, that thou mayest gather in thy corn, and thy wine, and thine oil. 15 And I will give grass in thy fields for thy cattle, and thou shalt eat and be satisfied. 16 Take heed to yourselves, lest your heart be deceived, and ye turn aside, and serve other gods, and worship them; 17 and the anger of the LORD be kindled against you, and He shut up the heaven, so that there shall be no rain, and the ground shall not yield her fruit; and ye perish quickly from off the good land which the LORD gives you. 18 Therefore shall ye lay up these My words in your heart and in your soul; and ye shall bind them for a sign upon your hand, and they shall be for frontlets between your eyes. 19 And ye shall teach them your children, talking of them, when thou sit in thy house, and when thou walk by the way, and when thou lie down, and when thou rise up. 20 And thou shalt write them upon the door-posts of thy house, and upon thy gates; 21 that your days may be multiplied, and the days of your children, upon the land which the LORD swore unto your fathers to give them, as the days of the heavens above the earth.

Since it is sworn, HE will keep HIS oath.

22 For if ye shall diligently keep all this commandment which I command you, to do it, to love the LORD your God, to walk in all His ways, and to cleave unto Him, 23 then will the LORD drive out all these nations from before you, and ye shall dispossess nations greater and mightier than yourselves. 24 Every place where ever the sole of your foot shall tread shall be yours: from the wilderness, and Lebanon, from the river, the river Euphrates, even unto the hinder sea shall be your border.

All you have to do is follow the Mitzvos and walk there.

25 There shall no man be able to stand against you: the LORD your God shall lay the fear of you and the dread of you upon all the land that ye shall tread upon, as He hath spoken unto you.

When it is the time to conquer the land, the L-RD will put fear of you upon the people of the land. As Rachav told to Yehoshua that the men have become timid and you can conquer.

The Dvir Family saved by miracles.

On Wednesday this week, 50 rockets were aimed at Katzrin on the Golan. Most were brought down by Iron Dome. However, with such a quantity, Iron dome was not built for such an attack.

Mr. Dvir between the age of 50 and 60 was at work. Mrs. Dvir went to the public shelter earlier in the morning when she got a What’s App from the local authorities. Their son was home with the dog.

Suddenly, the siren went off with no time to run 300meters/yards to the shelter. He made the decision to be in the strongest part of the house, the corridor between rooms, He was saved as the roof and plaster caved in on him from the direct hit by the supporting walls. But his leg was broken, full of scratches and bruises. He pried himself out of window, but his faithful dog was scared and afraid to move. He hobbled back in and got the dog.

He was not an officer but a corporal on Oct. 7th. His older brothers are religious. One in the Tank Corp and the other Golani 13. He is a paratrooper one of 9 children but could not learn in a Hesder Yeshiva ADHD. In fact, he was almost rejected for army service. But when he found male and female soldiers cowering in a shelter he organized those with weapons to guard. Then he found more soldiers that needed water and he obtained it. He showed leadership and deserves to be an officer.

“It was the hardest run I’d ever done”: 2nd Lt. Avichail Reuven tells his heroic, which Netanyahu briefly shared with Congress last month to a standing ovation in a TV interview.

When Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu addressed the US Congress at the end of July, he named four Israeli soldiers who he said had been heroes since Hamas’s October 7 massacre. The first of the troops was young Israel Defense Forces officer 2nd Lt. Avichail Reuven, who ran 12 kilometers (8 miles) to the Gaza border on that Saturday to help fight off the terrorists.

Reuven was at his parents’ home in the southern city of Kiriat Malachi on October 7 when he was awakened by sirens. He was still in the midst of officer training at the time, but after hearing the news of a massive terrorist infiltration into the Gaza border communities in Israel, he decided he to go and help even though he had not been called up.

“I told my brother and friend that I was heading to the border. I said that if anything happened, I would just kill [the terrorists]. I felt like the guys were laughing at me a little,” he told Channel 12 News in an interview aired Friday evening.

“They told me ‘You’re crazy to go, there’s no reason for us to go with you.’ I also looked for friends with a car to drive there, but I couldn’t find anyone, so I decided that I would go to the interchange and start trying to catch a ride.”

Reuven put on his uniform, which was still damp from being laundered, and headed out with his rifle and his red paratrooper beret.

Not knowing exactly where he was going, Reuven waited at the main interchange near his home for someone to stop and give him a ride, but no one did, so he decided to start running.

Twelve kilometers and one hour later, Reuven found himself back on the highway, hot and thirsty but determined to keep going.

“It was the hardest run I’d ever done. It was the longest run I’d ever done in uniform in the heat. A nightmare,” he said.

After walking a little further along the highway, Reuven finally caught a ride with a civilian whose child had been at the Supernova music festival, where Hamas terrorists murdered some 360 people and took over 40 hostages during their rampage through southern Israel.

Reuven told Channel 12 that to this day he does not know the man’s name, but the driver gave him water and dropped Reuven off at an interchange outside Ashkelon when he realized that he couldn’t get to the site of the rave and help his child without a weapon.

At the interchange, Reuven was able to catch another ride, with a police car, to a checkpoint near Zikim, the location of an IDF basic training base that was among the sites infiltrated by terrorists that day.

“I argued a little with the police officers. I told them, ‘I’m going in. If not with you, I’m going in alone,'” Reuven said, adding that as he was talking to them, a deputy commander of a search and rescue battalion based in Zikim, whom he named only as Alexander, arrived and the two entered the base together.

As they were in the midst of basic training, many of the soldiers on the Zikim base were not fully trained, so when the terrorists arrived, the commanders on base gathered all of the trainees into two bomb shelters and approached the fence to fight off the terrorists. Six commanders and one soldier in basic training were killed in the fighting.

Reuven and the other commander joined the battle as soon as they arrived.

“There was complete chaos here. Half the base was burned. A lot of shouting and you could see terrorists running all around the area,” Reuven said.

He and another commander joined forces to fight off terrorists and reached a bomb shelter where some 30 female basic training soldiers were waiting, one of whom was injured. Reuven tended to her wound.

“I said to them, ‘Listen, I need three strong girls. This is why you enlisted into a combat unit. Now is your moment to prove you’re fighters.'”

For the next couple of hours, he ran around the base fighting off terrorists and collecting stretchers and water for the soldiers in the bomb shelters.

Eventually, Reuven met Col. (res.) Erez Eshel, who had driven to Zikim from his home in Maaleh Adumim.

“I meet a mission-driven young soldier, and I don’t understand who he is. I don’t know his name,” Eshel told Channel 12, adding that he saved Reuven’s phone number under the name “Saturday, Simchat Torah soldier.”

“He’s completely in it, he can handle his gun, he’s calm, he’s focused, and he can handle anything. He is a real super soldier,” Eshel said.

The two stayed a little longer at Zikim before heading to nearby Yiftah, Kfar Aza, and eventually, Kibbutz Beeri, a community of around 1,000 residents of whom 101 civilians were killed on October 7, along with 31 security personnel.

All in all, terrorists murdered some 1,200 people, mostly civilians, and took 251 hostages during Hamas’s attack on Israel that day. The IDF spent the next few days fighting the terrorists and gradually arresting or killing all those who remained in Israel.

“I won’t say he’s the only soldier I picked up, but he is the only soldier who held up through all the fighting until early Sunday morning when I connected him with his company,” Eshel said.

Eshel told the commander of the IDF’s officers school in southern Israel, known as Bahad 1, about what Reuven did on October 7, and the commander told Netanyahu.

Reuven completed his officer training with distinction and accompanied Netanyahu to the US last month, where he got a standing ovation when the prime minister shared his story during his address to the joint session of Congress.

“In the early hours of October 7th, Avichail heard the news of Hamas’s bloody rampage. He put on his uniform, grabbed his rifle, but he didn’t have a car. So he ran eight miles to the frontlines of Gaza to defend his people,” Netanyahu told the US legislators.

“You heard that right. He ran eight miles, came to the frontlines, killed many terrorists and saved many, many lives. Avichail, we all honor your remarkable heroism.” According to Channel 12, Reuven is now a company commander for paratroopers in basic training, and he insists on including long runs in his soldiers’ training process.

Reuven is the second child of nine born to Israeli immigrants from Ethiopia. In his teens, he struggled to finish high school and was classified as an at-risk youth. Because of this, he was not qualified to be recruited into the IDF as a paratrooper, but Reuven was determined and fought for his place in the unit.

Reuven told Channel 12 that he does not intend to retire from the IDF anytime soon.

“I want to continue in the army. It’s my mission, it’s what I believe in,” he said.

The Bareheaded Driver and the desire for Shabbos by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/Stories/Stories/5784/1392-49.html

This happened relatively recently in Israel, in 2019.

A bus was on its way to Bnei Brak in the late afternoon before Shabbos. Unfortunately, there was terrible traffic, and the clock was moving much faster than the traffic was.

The driver, a man who was not wearing a yarmulke (kipah), called his wife and said to her, "I'm sorry, there is really bad traffic, and I will not be able to make it home to Rishon Le Tzion [southeast of Tel Aviv] for Shabbat. I will need to find a way to spend Shabbat in Bnei Brak [an 'ultra'-religious township bordering Tel Aviv to the northeast]."

His wife was understandably upset with this news. She reacted, "What do you mean you're not coming home for Shabbat? Everything is all prepared already! I cooked and cleaned! And now you're not coming home?"

The driver apologized again to his wife, finished the conversation, and continued driving, not knowing what else to do. A young man who was sitting in the front seat behind the driver heard this conversation. He leaned over to the driver and asked him, "Do you have a microphone on this bus?"

The driver said that he did, and the young man asked to make an announcement. Thanking the driver for the microphone, he addressed the rest of the passengers.

"Dearest Jews, our bus driver has a problem. He won't be able to make it back home on time for Shabbos because of the traffic situation. If you all will agree, I request from everyone, would you please get off at the first stop in Bnei Brak, so we can help him out?"

Every single one of the passengers agreed to do this, each saying he would find his way home from the first stop. The driver, however, said, "Thank you all very much, but you don't have to bother; it won't help me anyway. Even if you all get off at the first stop, I still won't make it back to Rishon Le Tzion with this bus before Shabbos."

Right away, one of the passengers went over to the driver, and made him an offer. He said, "I live right near the first bus stop. Please, come to my house, park your bus there, and take my car [!] to get to Rishon Le Tzion. That way, you will be able to make it home on time for Shabbos."

The bus driver was extremely grateful. He accepted the offer.

And that is what happened. When the bus pulled up at the first stop in Bnei Brak, everyone got off the bus. The driver then parked his bus on the narrow street where the passenger lived, and took the man's car that was offered to him, and he made it home just in time for Shabbat in Rishon Le Tzion.

The parked bus on the narrow street became a topic for conversation that Shabbat, and much more so when the story behind why it was parked there came out. It was a Kiddush Hashem, a true sanctification of G-D's Name [and Torah values], and the news of it spread very quickly.

Mi Ki Amcha Yisroel -["G-D:] who is like Your nation, the Jewish people!"

Why this week?
1) The Torah reading this week contains a review of the Ten Commandments, of which Shabbat observance is the fourth.
2) Tisha B’Av, the anniversary of the destruction of the Holy Temples in Jerusalem, fell on Tuesday of this week. The Second Temple was destroyed, our sages tell us, because of baseless hatred between Jews. In this story we encounter the recommended antidote: baseless love [and kindness] among Jews. A whole busload of Jews, each with a kipah or a hat on his head, inconveniencing themselves for a bareheaded Jew whose name they don't even know, just to help him solve a Jewish difficulty…and the man who lent his car! "Master of the Universe. Please take notice. Isn't it time for the Third and everlasting Temple?
