Parsha Noach
In last weeks Parsha,
the people with long lives the original fruit with vitamins and minerals before
the flood lived very long lives and did not age. Death would occur when they
were over 900 years old but 1,000 years was the original maximum lifespan of
mankind that I did not cover from the Zohar or Midrash last week because of the
six day creation vs. the billions of years.
I am unsure if the axis
of the earth was straight or not with Draco directly north and the star Thurban
as the north star. The earth was watered by a mist and day and night was
similar to the equator with very little variation in temperature of a 12 hour
day worldwide.
Thievery was though
taking a small sample less than a Peruta for each vendor and then not
purchasing. By doing so, the vendors were left with nothing and the population
paid nothing for their food, clothing, etc.
The story of Atlantis
might have come from the technically advanced area controlled by Tuval Kayn
that I did not cover. After the dual manslaughter of Tuval Kayn of Kayn, who
looked like an animal from afar with his many skinned coat, and the clapping of
his hands together killing his son in front of him, the world began solving
disputes with murder.
Around the time of
Chanoch, people began idol worship seeing that the Angels, especially Satan,
planets, nature were servants of G-D they too should be honored. For up until
then, astrology was like a computer document warning of what one’s day would be
like. It could tell of a bad toe nail, stubbing or scratching of the foot, a
cut, sprain or broken leg. It was to make one pray to HASHEM that nothing bad
would happen to his legs and not to run with his legs to do evil. Instead, it
began to be separate in their minds from HASHEM (heaven forbid).
So the earth was filled
with violence (Hamas) which included thievery, idolatry, murder and out of
boredom all sorts promiscuity acts.
G-D became disgusted
with what man had become. Instead of being in HIS Image, the planet had become
corrupt. Few like Methuselah and family continued on a straight path and his
grandson Noach was still a Tzadik in his generation.
6:9 These are the generations of Noah. Noah was in his generations
a man righteous and whole-hearted; Noah walked with God.
Adam, although created
an adult, walked before G-D like a toddler runs before his parents and tries to
hide. Noach walked with G-D like and older child and Avrum/Avraham walked
before G-D and talked to G-D like an adult with Moshe talking so-called face to
face with G-D.
The
following are the descendants of Noah – Noah was a righteous man - Since the verse mentions him, it relates his praise, in accordance with what it says: “The mention of a righteous person is
for blessing.” Another explanation why his descendants are not directly mentioned: It teaches you that the main posterity of righteous
people is their good deeds. In
his generations. Some
of our sages explain this to his credit: He was righteous even in his generation; if he had been in a generation of righteous people
he would certainly have been more righteous. But others explain this to his
discredit: He was a righteous person only in comparison with his own generation, but had he
been in the generation of Abraham he would not have been considered of any
importance.
10 And Noah begot three sons, Shem, Ham, and Japheth. 11 And the
earth was corrupt before God, and the earth was filled with violence. 12 And
God saw the earth, and, behold, it was corrupt; for all flesh had corrupted
their way upon the earth.
The earth was full of
Hamas = violence. Through the perverse activities of man, animals too had
become corrupt.
13 And God said unto Noah: 'The end of all flesh is come before Me;
for the earth is filled with violence through them; and, behold, I will destroy
them with the earth.
What should have been in
the Image if left unbridled without religious guidance and Halacha (laws,
statutes and ordinances) had become corrupt. In short, man was corrupt.
14 Make thee an ark of gopher wood; with rooms shalt thou make the
ark, and shalt pitch it within and without with pitch.
The Ark or Teva is a box
like structure.
15 And this is how thou shalt make it: the length of the ark three
hundred cubits, the breadth of it fifty cubits, and the height of it thirty
cubits.
The Teva was a three
story box. If we took the volume into account it was like a half of the Empire
State Building a 25 mile or 40 kilometer box car trail with the first floor for
fertilizer. The second for food and the third for animals and humans.
16 A light shalt thou make to the ark, and to a cubit shalt thou
finish it upward; and the door of the ark shalt thou set in the side thereof;
with lower, second, and third stories shalt thou make it.
Perhaps the light
(Zohar) has a golden top to a ?Tesla Generator? for light at night along with a
window for air circulation and daylight. Radium or something that could glow
enough during dark clouds and nights. We know that Tuval Kayn had certain
technology and the ancient Egyptians did not use flame inside the crypts of the
Pyramids so perhaps each was a Tesla Generator with thin layers of gold on top.
17 And I, behold, I do bring the flood of waters upon the earth, to
destroy all flesh, wherein is the breath of life, from under heaven; everything
that is in the earth shall perish.
What bothers the Sages
at this point, we would have seen Avraham begging for mercy for the generation
and Noach accepting the Gezaira. Perhaps the corruption and wickedness was so
bad and that only the merit of Methuselah kept off the flood.
18 But I will establish My covenant with thee; and thou shalt come
into the ark, thou, and thy sons, and thy wife, and thy sons' wives with thee.
19 And of every living thing of all flesh, two of every sort shalt thou bring
into the ark, to keep them alive with thee; they shall be male and female.
With you and yours after
the flood, I will establish my Bris with you and yours.
20 Of the fowl after their kind, and of the cattle after their
kind, of every creeping thing of the ground after its kind, two of every sort
shall come unto thee, to keep them alive.
A couple will come to
you and they will replenish the population of the earth.
21 And take thou unto thee of all food that is eaten, and gather it
to thee; and it shall be for food for thee, and for them.'
The outstanding question
remains in my head is that of the carnivores if they ate fish/flesh before the
flood or some soya like food that gave them their nourishment based on the
story of the Tree(s) in Gan Eden.
22 Thus did Noah; according to all that God commanded him, so did
he.
The Midrash talks about
him and his family building the Teva, supplying the straw, fodder, gains, etc. for
the animals and birds that came by themselves to the Teva. The good L-RD has a
purpose for insects and even though I don’t particularly like mosquitoes and
flies, they came in too.
7:1 And the LORD said unto Noah: 'Come thou and all thy house into
the ark; for thee have I seen righteous before Me in this generation. 2 Of
every clean beast thou shalt take to thee seven and seven, each with his mate;
and of the beasts that are not clean two [and two], each with his mate;
The beasts and fowls
that we call clean for eating, skinning or making wool in the future, he took
seven pairs. We see later on ‘the dove’ but actually there were seven pairs.
The Torah does not mix words but as not to embarrass the beasts and birds that
are unclean, seven extra words are added in the Hebrew rather than speak badly
of their status. We should learn this for mankind and what is going on today
with politicians is outright disgusting let only other feuds.
3 of the fowl also of the air, seven and seven, male and female; to
keep seed alive upon the face of all the earth.
Since birds and mammals are
not the same, they were classified differently. What we call Locusts also came
seven pairs of the kosher variety and everything else like reptiles that could
not survive a year in water needed to be taken in and needless to say, HASHEM
caused them to behave themselves towards other species or they hibernated.
4 For yet seven days, and I will cause it to rain upon the earth forty
days and forty nights; and every living substance that I have made will I blot
out from off the face of the earth.'
These seven days were
the Shiva for Methuselah. The heavens lite up like primeval days of creation.
This is basically where Velikovsky got his idea of the book “Worlds in Collision”.
5 And Noah did according unto all that the LORD commanded him. 6
And Noah was six hundred years old when the flood of waters was upon the earth.
It took Noah and sons
100 years to obtain funds, wood, pitch, etc. to build the Teva and put the
supplies and animals/cages and partitions inside.
7 And Noah went in, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons' wives
with him, into the ark, because of the waters of the flood. 8 Of clean beasts,
and of beasts that are not clean, and of fowls, and of everything that creeps
upon the ground, 9 there went in two and two unto Noah into the ark, male and
female, as God commanded Noah.
Either there never was
rain as a mist watered the earth in Gan Eden or the flood started out as a
drizzles, a rain, a pour until like buckets of water fell from the sky.
10 And it came to pass after the seven days, that the waters of the
flood were upon the earth. 11 In the six hundredth year of Noah's life, in the
second month, on the seventeenth day of the month, on the same day were all the
fountains of the great deep broken up, and the windows of heaven were opened.
The normal springs
suddenly rose and flooded and the rocks containing water stored began hissing
of steam or geysers like in Yellowstone Park.
12 And the rain was upon the earth forty days and forty nights.
What started out as a
warning for people who had boats to repent and store food and water and save
themselves when the first drops came soon became too late as the low lands flooded.
The Midrash will tell us of Og, the giant born from fallen angels saving himself
by grabbing on to the Ark but since the ocean is salty many take it too with a
grain of salt. However, sometimes things that appear to us to be strange do
happen.
13 In the selfsame day entered Noah, and Shem, and Ham, and
Japheth, the sons of Noah, and Noah's wife, and the three wives of his sons
with them, into the ark; 14 they, and every beast after its kind, and all the
cattle after their kind, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth
after its kind, and every fowl after its kind, every bird of every sort. 15 And
they went in unto Noah into the ark, two and two of all flesh wherein is the
breath of life. 16 And they that went in, went in male and female of all flesh,
as God commanded him; and the LORD shut him in.
Similar to chapter 2 of
Beresheis where the creation of man is detailed, so too here more details are
added by the Torah. From an engineering standpoint with ropes and pulleys, I
could see one of Noah’s sons putting pitch on the outside of the door but
perhaps for the people who left Mitzrayim and other generations it was easier
to say the L-RD shut him in. Whatever, happened, Noach and family with the
other creatures were in a waterproof Teva.
17 And the flood was forty days upon the earth; and the waters
increased, and bore up the ark, and it was lifted up above the earth. 18 And
the waters prevailed, and increased greatly upon the earth; and the ark went
upon the face of the waters. 19 And the waters prevailed exceedingly upon the
earth; and all the high mountains that were under the whole heaven were
covered.
Some people fled up
mountains with food and were met by wild beasts and other survived with a
chance to repent until close to the 40th day.
20 Fifteen cubits upward did the waters prevail; and the mountains
were covered. 21 And all flesh perished that moved upon the earth, both fowl,
and cattle, and beast, and every swarming thing that swarms upon the earth, and
every man;
Even in the Himalaya
Mountains, there is evidence of a flood and the mountains pushed up afterwards.
22 all in whose nostrils was the breath of the spirit of life,
whatsoever was in the dry land, died. 23 And He blotted out every living
substance which was upon the face of the ground, both man, and cattle, and
creeping thing, and fowl of the heaven; and they were blotted out from the
earth; and Noah only was left, and they that were with him in the ark. 24 And
the waters prevailed upon the earth a hundred and fifty days.
The earth was saturated
from the flood 150days that even without rains, the waters could not subside.
8:1 And God remembered Noah, and every living thing, and all the
cattle that were with him in the ark; and God made a wind to pass over the
earth, and the waters assuaged; 2 the fountains also of the deep and the
windows of heaven were stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.
Once the Mountains were
covered and the corrupted earth died off there was no more need for the flood
to continue.
3 And the waters returned from off the earth continually; and after
the end of a hundred and fifty days the waters decreased. 4 And the ark rested
in the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, upon the mountains
of Ararat. 5 And the waters decreased continually until the tenth month; in the
tenth month, on the first day of the month, were the tops of the mountains
seen. 6 And it came to pass at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the
window of the ark which he had made. 7 And he sent forth a raven, and it went
forth to and fro, until the waters were dried up from off the earth. 8 And he
sent forth a dove from him, to see if the waters were abated from off the face
of the ground. 9 But the dove found no rest for the sole of her foot, and she
returned unto him to the ark, for the waters were on the face of the whole
earth; and he put forth his hand, and took her, and brought her in unto him into
the ark. 10 And he stayed yet other seven days; and again he sent forth the
dove out of the ark. 11 And the dove came in to him at eventide; and lo in her
mouth an olive-leaf freshly plucked; so Noah knew that the waters were abated
from off the earth.
Now he knew that the
flood was over but wanted to wait another week for certainty.
12 And he stayed yet other seven days; and sent forth the dove; and
she returned not again unto him anymore.
The Dove found a home in
the Olive Tree.
13 And it came to pass in the six hundred and first year, in the
first month, the first day of the month, the waters were dried up from off the
earth; and Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the
face of the ground was dried. 14 And in the second month, on the seven and
twentieth day of the month, was the earth dry.
What is meant by covering?
Rashi does not say. Was it the main entrance door? Shutters, Part of the Roof?
SORRY NO TIME TO CHECK THE MIDRASH OR ZOHAR ON THIS MAYBE NEXT WEEK.
15 And God spoke unto Noah, saying: 16 'Go forth from the ark,
thou, and thy wife, and thy sons, and thy sons' wives with thee. 17 Bring forth
with thee every living thing that is with thee of all flesh, both fowl, and
cattle, and every creeping thing that creeps upon the earth; that they may
swarm in the earth, and be fruitful, and multiply upon the earth.'
Go forth and be fruitful
and multiple and the other six mitzvos of the Bnei Noach follow.
18 And Noah went forth, and his sons, and his wife, and his sons'
wives with him; 19 every beast, every creeping thing, and every fowl,
whatsoever moves upon the earth, after their families; went forth out of the
ark. 20 And Noah built an altar unto the LORD; and took of every clean beast,
and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt-offerings on the altar. 21 And the
LORD smelled the sweet savor; and the LORD said in His heart: 'I will not again
curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is
evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more everything living, as
I have done. 22 While the earth remains, seedtime and harvest, and cold and
heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.'
I wrote this a number of
time based on the book “In Search of Noah’s Ark” by David W. Balsiger
and Charles E. Sellier. That it may be that the original earth of Adam though
the sixth hundredth year of Noach was a straight axis without heat and cold but
equatorial 12hr. day temperature without summer and winter. During the flood
something extraneous to the planet caused the axis to shift, the water to rise
from underground stored in rocks and rain to fall.
9:1 And God blessed Noah and his sons, and said unto them: 'Be
fruitful and multiply, and replenish the earth. 2 And the fear of you and the
dread of you shall be upon every beast of the earth, and upon every fowl of the
air, and upon all wherewith the ground teems, and upon all the fishes of the
sea: into your hand are they delivered. 3 Every moving thing that lives shall
be for food for you; as the green herb have I given you all. 4 Only flesh with
the life thereof, which is the blood thereof, shall ye not eat.
You can eat flesh but
drain off and roast or salt off the blood.
5 And surely your blood of your lives will I require; at the hand
of every beast will I require it; and at the hand of man, even at the hand of
every man's brother, will I require the life of man. 6 Whoso sheds man's blood,
by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God made He man. 7 And you,
be ye fruitful, and multiply; swarm in the earth, and multiply therein.' 8 And
God spoke unto Noah, and to his sons with him, saying: 9 'As for Me, behold, I
establish My covenant with you, and with your seed after you; 10 and with every
living creature that is with you, the fowl, the cattle, and every beast of the
earth with you; of all that go out of the ark, even every beast of the earth.
11 And I will establish My covenant with you; neither shall all flesh be cut
off any more by the waters of the flood; neither shall there anymore be a flood
to destroy the earth.' 12 And God said: 'This is the token of the covenant
which I make between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for
perpetual generations: 13 I have set My bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a
token of a covenant between Me and the earth. 14 And it shall come to pass,
when I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow is seen in the cloud, 15 that I
will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living
creature of all flesh; and the waters shall no more become a flood to destroy
all flesh. 16 And the bow shall be in the cloud; and I will look upon it, that
I may remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature
of all flesh that is upon the earth.' 17 And God said unto Noah: 'This is the
token of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is
upon the earth.'
Basically, it means that
if you see a rainbow, it means that your generation is wicked enough to deserve
destruction, but G-D has remember HIS Bris with us.
18 And the sons of Noah, that went forth from the ark, were Shem,
and Ham, and Japheth; and Ham is the father of Canaan.
Unfortunately Canaan caused
notoriety as we see later on.
19 These three were the sons of Noah, and of these was the whole
earth overspread. 20 And Noah the husbandman began, and planted a vineyard. 21
And he drank of the wine, and was drunken; and he was uncovered within his
tent. 22 And Ham, the father of Canaan, saw the nakedness of his father, and
told his two brethren without.
And he castrated him so
that there would be no more division for inheritance.
23 And Shem and Japheth took a garment, and laid it upon both their
shoulders, and went backward, and covered the nakedness of their father; and
their faces were backward, and they saw not their father's nakedness.
They behaved modestly
while Canaan thought it funny.
24 And Noah awoke from his wine, and knew what his youngest son had
done unto him. 25 And he said: Cursed be Canaan; a servant of servants shall he
be unto his brethren.
This was a powerful curse.
26 And he said: Blessed be the LORD, the God of Shem; and let
Canaan be their servant. 27 God enlarge Japheth, and he shall dwell in the
tents of Shem; and let Canaan be their servant.
The children who will
inherit Europe, the Middle East, Asia to the Americas shall be blessed and some
of the people of the land of Canaan and Africa (not North Africa) were cursed.
28 And Noah lived after the flood three hundred and fifty years. 29
And all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years; and he died.
If you do your
calculations, Noach was 600 years old when the flood occurred in the year 1656
of creation. He therefore lived until the year 2006. Avraham was born in 1948
and 58 years old when Noach died. The 70 Nations are now mentioned briefly.
10:1 Now these are the generations of the sons of Noah: Shem, Ham,
and Japheth; and unto them were sons born after the flood. 2 The sons of
Japheth: Gomer, and Magog, and Madai, and Javan, and Tubal, and Meshech, and
Tiras. 3 And the sons of Gomer: Ashkenaz, and Riphath, and Togarmah. 4 And the
sons of Javan: Elishah, and Tarshish, Kittim, and Dodanim. 5 Of these were the
isles of the nations divided in their lands, every one after his tongue, after
their families, in their nations. 6 And the sons of Ham: Cush, and Mizraim, and
Put, and Canaan. 7 And the sons of Cush: Seba, and Havilah, and Sabtah, and
Raamah, and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah: Sheba, and Dedan. 8 And Cush begot
Nimrod; he began to be a mighty one in the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter
before the LORD; wherefore it is said: 'Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the
LORD.' 10 And the beginning of his kingdom was Babel, and Erech, and Accad, and
Calneh, in the land of Shinar. 11 Out of that land went forth Asshur, and built
Nineveh, and Rehoboth-ir, and Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and
Calah--the same is the great city. 13 And Mizraim begot Ludim, and Anamim, and
Lehabim, and Naphtuhim, 14 and Pathrusim, and Casluhim--whence went forth the
Philistines--and Caphtorim. 15 And Canaan begot Zidon his firstborn, and Heth;
16 and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, and the Girgashite; 17 and the Hivite,
and the Arkite, and the Sinite; 18 and the Arvadite, and the Zemarite, and the
Hamathite; and afterward were the families of the Canaanite spread abroad.
Since Avrum/Avraham and
Yitzchak will interact with them until they are thrown out by Yoshua Bin Nun
the Torah identifies them.
19 And the border of the Canaanite was from Zidon, as thou got
toward Gerar, unto Gaza; as thou go toward Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and
Zeboiim, unto Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, after their families, after
their tongues, in their lands, in their nations.
Zidon or Tyre in Lebanon
until an area around modern Gaza.
21 And unto Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, the elder
brother of Japheth, to him also were children born. 22 The sons of Shem: Elam,
and Asshur, and Arpachshad, and Lud, and Aram. 23 And the sons of Aram: Uz, and
Hul, and Gether, and Mash. 24 And Arpachshad begot Shelah; and Shelah begot
Eber. 25 And unto Eber were born two sons; the name of the one was Peleg; for
in his days was the earth divided; and his brother's name was Joktan.
Each of his parents were
the Gedolim of their generation. Even though the tenth generation (Avraham was
born) it was in his generation that the plans to build
26 And Joktan begot Almodad, and Sheleph, and Hazarmaveth, and
Jerah; 27 and Hadoram, and Uzal, and Diklah; 28 and Obal, and Abimael, and
Sheba; 29 and Ophir, and Havilah, and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan.
30 And their dwelling was from Mesha, as thou go toward Sephar, unto the
mountain of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, after their families,
after their tongues, in their lands, after their nations. 32
These are the families of the sons of Noah, after their generations, in their
nations; and of these were the nations divided in the earth after the flood.
11:1 And the whole earth was of one language and of one speech. 2 And it came
to pass, as they journeyed east, that they found a plain in the land of Shinar;
and they dwelt there. 3 And they said one to another: 'Come, let us make brick,
and burn them thoroughly.' And they had brick for stone, and slime had they for
mortar. 4 And they said: 'Come, let us build us a city, and a tower, with its
top in heaven, and let us make us a name; lest we be scattered abroad upon the
face of the whole earth.' 5 And the LORD came down to see the city and the
tower, which the children of men build 6 And the LORD said: 'Behold, they are
one people, and they have all one language; and this is what they begin to do;
and now nothing will be withholden from them, which they purpose to do. 7 Come,
let us go down, and there confound their language, that they may not understand
one another's speech.' 8 So the LORD scattered them abroad from thence upon the
face of all the earth; and they left off to build the city. 9 Therefore was the
name of it called Babel; because the LORD did there confound the language of
all the earth; and from thence did the LORD scatter them abroad upon the face
of all the earth.
From here on are the
generations of families that spoke the original language of creation and continued
to do so after Migdal Bavel. They kept Hebrew understood Aramaic and a few
other close languages. From these ten generations arose up Avrum.
10 These are the generations of Shem. Shem was a hundred years old,
and begot Arpachshad two years after the flood. 11 And Shem lived after he
begot Arpachshad five hundred years, and begot sons and daughters. 12 And
Arpachshad lived five and thirty years, and begot Shelah. 13 And Arpachshad
lived after he begot Shelah four hundred and three years, and begot sons and
daughters. 14 And Shelah lived thirty years, and begot Eber. 15 And Shelah
lived after he begot Eber four hundred and three years, and begot sons and
daughters. 16 And Eber lived four and thirty years, and begot Peleg. 17 And
Eber lived after he begot Peleg four hundred and thirty years, and begot sons
and daughters. 18 And Peleg lived thirty years, and begot Reu. 19 And Peleg
lived after he begot Reu two hundred and nine years, and begot sons and
daughters. 20 And Reu lived two and thirty years, and begot Serug. 21 And Reu
lived after he begot Serug two hundred and seven years, and begot sons and
daughters. 22 And Serug lived thirty years, and begot Nahor. 23 And Serug lived
after he begot Nahor two hundred years, and begot sons and daughters.
From here on, the life span is really down from 950
years of Noach, to 230 years and Nahor
going down to 148 years that is similar to Yacov’s 147years. These are
the immediate parents, grandparents and great-grandparents of Avrum.
24 And Nahor lived nine and twenty years, and begot Terah. 25 And
Nahor lived after he begot Terah a hundred and nineteen years, and begot sons
and daughters. 26 And Terah lived seventy years, and begot Abram, Nahor, and
Haran.
We see the start of a custom to name people after
honorable relatives as the name Nahor appears again.
27 Now these are the generations of Terah. Terah begot Abram,
Nahor, and Haran; and Haran begot Lot. 28 And Haran died in the presence of his
father Terah in the land of his nativity, in Ur of the Chaldees. 29 And Abram
and Nahor took them wives: the name of Abram's wife was Sarai; and the name of
Nahor's wife, Milcah, the daughter of Haran, the father of Milcah, and the
father of Iscah. 30 And Sarai was barren; she had no child. 31 And Terah took
Abram his son, and Lot the son of Haran, his son's son, and Sarai his
daughter-in-law, his son Abram's wife; and they went forth with them from Ur of
the Chaldees, to go into the land of Canaan; and they came unto Haran, and
dwelt there.
This whole section of the Torah with all the
generations was for the purpose to show the origin of the nations and the birth
and family of Avrum and Sarai/Iscah.
32 And the days of Terah were two hundred and five years; and Terah
died in Haran.
The Gemara mentions two people who lived 400 years
after Terah’s 205 years. They are in the realm of Aggadah and often taken with
a grain of salt. Sirach Bas Asher who lived 400 years from a blessing from
Yacov. And a Rabbi who was in a hurry, taught his student 400 times but the boy
did not pay attention as he thought of the hurry, so he taught him 400 more times
Torah and a voice came out of heaven offering him a choice to clear his generation
from sin or live 400 years he chose the former and also lived 400 years.

I CAN’T recall if I noticed this last year or the year
before. I also don’t remember if I heard it from anyone else, though I find
it very hard to believe that no one else would have noticed it
until now. So, I’ll mention it anyhow.
One of the prayers we had been saying (thank God we
don’t have to anymore) for the hostages was something that we already say
regularly as part of Monday and Thursday Shacharis: “[As for] our
brothers, the entire House of Israel who [still] remain in distress uvashivia—and
captivity, whether on sea or on land, may God have compassion on them, and
bring them from distress to relief, from darkness to light, from servitude to
redemption, at this moment, speedily, very soon; and let us say Amen.”
Similarly, the word for “captive” also appears in the
Torah here: “The Canaanite king of Arad…waged war against the Jewish People
and took from a shevi—captive” (Bamidbar 21:1). Until recently,
that is the word we have used to refer to Jews taken captive, which was once a
far too common thing.
But that is not the word you will find used by the
media or anyone since October 7, 2023, after Hamas invaded Israel and brutally
took captives. The word used was chatufim from the word (lichtoph),
which means to grab something suddenly and forcefully, also correct.
This is the interesting part. In this week’s parsha,
the Torah tells us why God decided to destroy mankind, save Noach, his family,
and some of the animals: “the land was filled with chamas—theft” (Bereishis 6:11).
Yes, they were doing all the other things mankind does wrong and which angers
God, even the worst of the worst. But, as the commentators point out, stealing
from one another seemed to seal the deal on destruction.
We’re told a similar thing at the end of Parshas
Ki Seitzei. First, we were commanded to make sure our weights and balances
are just so that we do not cheat anyone. Then, we are commanded to wipe out all
memory of Amalek, raising the question, what’s the connection between the two?
It is explained that the Torah is indicating what leads
to Amalek, our most formidable enemy and national nemesis: stealing. The
cardinal sins are cardinal sins, but there is something specific about stealing
that represents the breakdown of society and great spiritual vulnerability.
Targum Onkeles’s translation of chamas? Chatofim.
To be clear, there are levels of stealing. The most
obvious level is taking someone else’s property without permission, even if you
intend to later return it. They can even see you do it, but if they do not
agree to your possession of their property, it is stealing.
But halacha also talks about how
gambling wins can also be a form of stealing. People do not gamble to give up
their money, but hoping to win. They are only “forced” to part with their
hard-earned cash by the rules of the game. It may be legal by human standards
but not necessarily by Heavenly ones.
Gouging can also be a form of stealing by God’s
standard. Just because we let the marketplace set the price of products does
not mean God agrees with that. The marketplace is human-made, human-run, and
greed-driven. Does that sound like a just system to decide what is good and bad
for society?
I once heard the recording of a well-respected rabbi
speaking to, rather, yelling at a conference room of frum lawyers. He was
shocked at how many widows and orphans had to forgo proper representation in
the courts because they could not afford the fees. It was as if, he cried out,
secular standards had replaced Torah values.
One thing is for certain, and that is that we do not
appreciate how destructive stealing is to God’s world, or how many forms of
stealing there are according to Torah. Making money on money is normal and
logical, but not necessarily acceptable in Heaven, and when you learn the laws
of ribbis (interest), it is surprising to see how some of the
most seemingly fair transactions fall into the category of the Torah
prohibition.
Of course, I am not stating that this was the basis for
what happened two years ago and just came to an end (at least for the remaining
living captives) this Hoshanah Rabbah. It would take a prophet in touch with
God to say that with credibility.
But, we also don’t believe in coincidence on any level,
and Parashat Noach came right after we finally came to terms
with what had just occurred that Simchas Torah. The most I can say with any
certainty is that it is “interesting.” Oh, and, would it hurt to give some
thought to how we do business and charge what we do, especially for things
people need but might not be able to afford?
At the very least, we’ll have less to confess next Yom
Kippur, B”H. At the very best, we can avoid such crises in the future.

I chose Shabbat over a Rocket Launch by Sofya Sara
Esther Tamarkin
https://www.chabad.org/library/article_cdo/aid/5146810/jewish/I-Chose-Shabbat-Over-a-Rocket-Launch.htm
I thrive on predictable outcomes. I steer my life
away from unforeseen outcomes. But one day, an unexpected opportunity helped me
to see my life in a different light.
I have always dreamed about witnessing a rocket
launch into space.
A few years ago I learned that there were tickets
that allowed a limited number of people to view the launch from the Kennedy
Space Center in Florida. The next launch was scheduled in a month, and my
family was drawn to the idea of this adventure. We invited two more families
whose children were of a similar age as ours, and together, we all flew from
Philadelphia to Orlando.
On Jan. 19, 2017, we arrived at the Kennedy Space
Center before 11 a.m., as was required. Time went by very slowly as we toured
and waited for the event. Finally, at 7 p.m. we boarded a special bus and were
taken to the viewing platform along with other spectators. The air was filled
with excitement.
We tuned into the radio station that was broadcasting
the launch. Engineers were speaking words that I could not understand.
Finally, the countdown began. It was five minutes to
the launch and seconds seemed to decrease at an unnaturally slow rate. Every
moment felt urgent and vital. My heart was beating fast ... four minutes, 40
seconds to go. We could see the smoke rising up in the distance. Voices on the
radio were giving their final “green” light. Everyone was watching the clock.
And then, one of the engineers on the radio
pronounced a code word that I couldn't understand, and the clock stopped. The
discussion was too technical for me to follow, but soon after an announcement
was made that the launch was postponed until the next day, which was Friday
night.
I was overcome with disappointment. I couldn’t stop
looking at the clock with the numbers frozen on the monitor. We had committed
time and money to this event, yet we would have to miss it because driving to
watch the launch on Shabbat was not an option. We were scheduled to join the
Chabad House of South Orlando for Shabbat prayers and dinner.
Having no control over the situation made me feel
helpless, but I realized that I did have control over my perspective and my
priorities. While feeling disappointed about the unsuccessful rocket launch, I
was at peace with my decision to miss it on the next night, choosing instead to
observe Shabbat.
The next evening we spent ushering in Shabbat at the Chabad House with people from different parts
of the world who shared our Jewish heritage. After lighting the candles, I
considered going outside at launch time to see if the rocket would be visible
in the sky, but then I concluded that I wanted to focus completely on our
Shabbat experience. Once I tapped into my inner priorities, there was no more
sadness about this lost opportunity.
On Sunday morning, we flew back to Philadelphia
without witnessing the launch of the rocket into space.
From our trip to Kennedy Space Center, I was reminded
that life is full of complexity; days that arrive without perfect “weather”
conditions or ideal circumstances. We cannot control the alignment of the
countless details needed for a perfect “launch day.” Yet despite having no sway
over the outcome, we are expected to do our best to act in accordance with our
priorities and Torah values.
Ironically, when I reached this clarity, I felt
liberated from my need to control the countless events in my world and
experienced a feeling of inner peace.
Interesting enough that was the last launch of a Saturn
5 Missile. I thought for a moment about traveling a few hours north to view the
launch, but then rejected the idea. I was alone in South Florida and had to
prepare for Shabbos and what would happen if there was another delay. My
friends from NJ, Del and Barbara had seen a launch close up and missed one and
watched from Orlando. They had raved about the experience.
My Condo faces north and I kept my shutters up that
night as I watched the lights of planes on their routes to land in Fort
Lauderdale Airport. I walked to my porch very close to launch time. Suddenly
the sky lite up over an area west of but close to Broward City and then like a
reverse fireball meteor it started rising in the sky and continued until a
white dot faded from view over the Atlantic Ocean. That would be the last ever
Space Shuttle Flight and the launch of the Saturn 5 Missile. So for me it was
extra Oneg (pleasure) Shabbos and was one of the best Shabbos Tables I had
while being alone.

Departures by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles Shlita

PART I
YAAKOV
HALACH L'DARKO -- A "frame" story, by Yerachmiel Tilles - and an
introduction and background for the Chasidic Masters story that follows it,.
It is
mentioned in several different books of Jewish Law a/o Customs from centuries
ago that one of the synagogue authorities would announce immediately following
the Evening Prayer after Yom Kippur: Yaakov Halach
l'Darko ["Jacob went on his way" or, in colloquial American,
"Jack Hit the Road"], meaning back to 'regular life.' Why then? After
the intensity and pressures of the month of Elul, Selichos, Rosh
Hashana and Yom Kippur, we all breathe a sigh of relief that,
presumably, thanks to the Creator's mercy and with a nod due to our efforts, we
are inscribed in "the Book of Life" for at least another year.
In Autumn
1978, however, surprisingly soon after the Lubavitcher Rebbe suffered a massive
heart attack, in five successive evening broadcasts from his recovery room he
analyzed the different levels of Yaakov Halach l'Darko.
1) After Simchas
Torah he emphasized that immediately following Yom Kippur we do not go
back to regular life. In the next four days we are busy with Sukkot
preparations, and then the seven-day Sukkot festival, and another two days (one
in Israel) of Shemini Atzeret and Simchas Torah. Only after
Simchas Torah completes the 3+ weeks of holiday celebrations and other special
days should life be considered back to 'normal' and Yaakov Halach
l'Darko be said.
2) But
then, a few nights later, after Shabbos Beresheis, he spoke that we can't
really consider the few days after Simchas Torah as 'regular' life, because in
just a few days [1] after we were welcoming Shabbos. Therefore, it is
appropriate to delay the Yaakov Halach l'Darko proclamation until
Shabbos Beresheis ends.
3) A few
days after Shabbos Beresheis, it was already Rosh Chodesh Mar-Cheshvan.
When it ended the Rebbe spoke again, pointing out that maybe it is still too
early to say Yaakov Halach l'Darko after Shabbos Beresheis, because
this was not a 'regular' week since it contained two days of Rosh Chodesh,
another celebratory occasion, and anyway, during the three weeks from Yom
Kippur through the two days of Rosh Chodesh we skip all of the penitential and
confessional prayers, so it is not until after Rosh Chodesh that all the
weekdays are 'regular.' Therefore, tonight Yaakov Halach l'Darko is
even more relevant.
4) But, as
you may be presuming by now, the Rebbe next explained on the Saturday night
after Shabbos Noach that it was only a few days from Rosh Chodesh until
Shabbos, so now, the night after this Shabbos, is the first beginning of a week
that has no special days in it. 100% Yaakov Halach l'Darko!
Bottom
line:
Truth is, I
don't know at all what goes on in other communities, but in Chabad my experience
is that many say it after Simchas Torah, and even more after Shabbos Beresheis.
Here is what the Lubavitcher Rebbe said about this:
"On
the night after Shabbos Beresheis ends it is even more appropriate to announce
"Yaakov Halach l'darko" in addition to the announcement on the night
after Simchas Torah. And this announcement [after Shabbos Beresheis] has to be
in a manner that it penetrates [each one's] thought, speech and deed."
(see Likutei Sichos vol. 20, p. 269)
FYI:
5) After
Noach comes the Shabbos of Lech Lecha, which translates as "Go to
yourself" or "Go for yourself" (The 'Lech' here is the command
form of the verb; in Yaakov Halach l'Darko it is the past
tense.) The Rebbe absolutely "went to town" with this connection, but
almost purely from a spiritual perspective.

PART II
At last! --
The story that penetrates to the essence of "Yaakov Halach l'Darko:"
"Difficult
Departures"
An awesome
silence reigned in the Beis Midrash of Rabbi Yitzchak-Aizik of
Zhidachov. Seated at the head of the table at the Third Meal of Shabbos, the
Rebbe was chanting various pensive melodies and expounding mysteries of the
Torah. No one present dared to move or breathe aloud.
Such a
profound yearning for repentance and spiritual elevation did the Rebbe arouse
in the souls of his listeners, that on the morning following one such occasion
not a single one of the merchants and shopkeepers who had come to be with him
for the duration of Shabbos had as yet came to take his leave and request his
blessing. In the state in which he had left them, it did not occur to them that
they should now be returning to their homes and livelihoods.
Not
realizing this, the tzadik asked his four sons why no one had come to
take his leave. When they duly asked, they received the following answer:
"Only yesterday our rebbe, your father, made all the things of This World
so unworthy and uninviting in our eyes, that we are ashamed to face him with
our problems and requests about our oxen and donkeys and businesses and whatever."
When they
reported this back to their father, he smiled and then commented:
"Some-thing similar once happened with Rabbi Menachem Mendel of
Riminov." The Riminover's response was to have circulated to his chasidim
the following message:
"'Shabbos
is one thing, weekdays are something different. Let the businessmen return to
their homes and engage honestly in their commerce.'
"So
now," the Zhidachover instructed his sons, "please tell my chasidim
to consider the verse in Hallel: 'The heavens are the heavens of G-d, but the
earth He has given to the children of man.' (Psalms 115:16)
Hearing this, each
Chassid folded up his tallit, packed his bags, and returned to his home
and his daily affairs. Yaakov Halach l'darko!

Treasury of Chasidic Tales.
Why This Week? Yaakov Halach l'Darko.
Compiler's Confession:
Personally, I say or at least acknowledge "Yaakov Halach l'Darko"
after Simchas Torah and again after Shabbos Beresheis, but I save most of my
enthusiasm for Motzei Shabbos Noach. That puts me in a [very?] small minority,
but I still feel inspired by that stage by stage development which the Rebbe
presented in that series of talks while recovering from his heart attack.
In the Rebbe's journals ("Reshimos') from the year 5717 (1956):
"After [the Mincha prayer of] Shabbos parshas Noi'ach, the Rebbe
instructed the Gabbai to announce Yaakov Halach l'Darko." [3]
Biographic notes:
Rabbi Yitzchak-Isaac Eichenstein of Zhidachov (1804 - 30 Adar A, 1872) was
a descendent of the Tosfos Yomtov and the nephew and successor of Rabbi
Zvi-Hirsch Safrin of Zhidachov, first of the dynasty. He was a major scholar
and Kabbalist as well as a chassidic rebbe, who authored commentaries on
Talmud, Midrash and Kabbalah. His thousands of followers included some of the
leading scholars and rabbis of the generation. His four sons were all
considered tzadikim, including the first rebbe of the Komarna dynasty, Rabbi
Yaakov-Moshe Safrin.
Rabbi Menachem- Mendel of Riminov [? - 19 Iyar 1815] was a main disciple
of the Rebbe Elimelech of Lizhinsk, and subsequently an important Rebbe in the
third generation of the Chasidic movement. Many rebbes in the generation after
his studied with him. His teachings are collected in Menachem
Zion and other works.

Swords of Iron Day 747
There are reports that anti-Houthi
Yemenites hit the meeting place of the Defense Minister and Cabinet and he is
in critical condition.
I watched last week a Galaxy 5
bringing either helicopters or limos for the President and this week another
one for the Vice President. I was by the airport during a few of the Clinton
visits and had to stay in my place and drive Beit Nechemia Route 444 on the way
home. Security is not closing off a block or two in DC or West Palm Beach but
closing down main roads in Israel.
My area had a slight blackout on
Shabbos and a closure Monday night for putting in a new and different
transformer and line in for road 446. Having reserve battery, I was not
affected due to my back-up batteries.

Hamas is mulling old tricks. They
won the election against the PLO with some slogan like Group for Justice and
Democracy, or the Oct. 7th Movement, or some other made up name. Shakespeare
told me “A Rose by any other name will still be a Rose.” A Hamas terrorist by
any other name would still be modern Amalek.
