Parsha Bechaalosecha, story, editorials

Please pray for Moshe ben Bella.

You can remove these names from your urgent prayers. Drorah Rivka bas Chana, Sara Naomi bas Gittel, Golda Shulamis bas Celia we may have to add them again in the future.

Editorial about what is going on or not going on.

For almost 45 years I have know about Electro-magnetic Pulse or EMP. It first came up in Aviation Week and Space Technology in an article about Israel almost sending an atomic bomb to the Aswan Dam.

EMP or a horrible Solar Storm or Hurricane can know out the large electrical transformers. The Military has hardened their grids on their bases. It would take only $2 to 3 billion to harden the grids of all the power plants in the States out of a $4 trillion budget. However, the Electric Company Lobby  is against this. It would knock them back to the stone age and they would go out of business if one to three high altitude nuclear bombs or a super solar storm was to occur. There lobbies are run by lawyers not engineers!

Another rant and rave I have this week is on Facebook. There is still an F Israel page on Facebook. But they muzzled me for writing about the religion of peace brotherhood and ISIS infiltrating a certain presidential administration back in 2015 to their counting system. It had to have been scanned by computer and a certain word came up and they put me in Facebook jail. I kept writing my blogspot. For those readers of FB if you do not see my advertisement in a group on Facebook just search for the blog by 2 PM Israel time on Friday or 7 AM on the east coast of the USA.

Parsha Behaalosecha

At this point we have had the whole nation contribute to the Mishkan. The Nassim bring their Teruma for each tribe last Parsha and the work of the Leviim in the Mishkan. The Cohanim did take care of the Korbanos but Aaron, himself, as leader of the Cohanim has not contributed anything. Now he gets the last task which is the crowning of the Mishkan with the lighting of the Menorah and it will an eternal light (until the first Beis HaMikdash was destroyed).

8:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Speak unto Aaron, and say unto him: When thou lightest the lamps, the seven lamps shall give light in front of the candlestick.' 3 And Aaron did so: he lighted the lamps thereof so as to give light in front of the candlestick, as the LORD commanded Moses.

The Menorah was a small light for the sanctuary but a spiritual beacon to Am Yisrael who is the light unto the nations. (Yeshayahu 49:6)

… 6 'Take the Levites from among the children of Israel, and cleanse them. 7 And thus shalt thou do unto them, to cleanse them: sprinkle the water of purification upon them, and let them cause a razor to pass over all their flesh, and let them wash their clothes, and cleanse themselves. 8 Then let them take a young bullock, and its meal-offering, fine flour mingled with oil, and another young bullock shalt thou take for a sin-offering. … 15 And after that shall the Levites go in to do the service of the tent of meeting; and thou shalt cleanse them, and offer them for a wave-offering. 16 For they are wholly given unto Me from among the children of Israel; instead of all that opens the womb, even the first-born of all the children of Israel, have I taken them unto Me. 17 For all the first-born among the children of Israel are Mine, both man and beast; on the day that I smote all the first-born in the land of Egypt I sanctified them for Myself. 18 And I have taken the Levites instead of all the first-born among the children of Israel.

As I mentioned, the Bechorim were supposed to be the assistants to the Cohanim instead of the Leviim. However, some of the participants in the Egel HaZahav were Bechorim. Now the Leviim were being consecrated and taking the place of the Bechorim for they avoided any contact whatsoever with the Egel and the worship.

20 Thus did Moses, and Aaron, and all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the Levites; according unto all that the LORD commanded Moses touching the Levites, so did the children of Israel unto them. 21 And the Levites purified themselves, and they washed their clothes; and Aaron offered them for a sacred gift before the LORD; and Aaron made atonement for them to cleanse them.

From the time the census was taken and the Leviim took over for the Bechorim, the Bechor who was not a grandson of a Levi or Cohain would have to be redeemed.

… 23 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 24 'This is that which pertains unto the Levites: from twenty and five years old and upward they shall go in to perform the service in the work of the tent of meeting; 25 and from the age of fifty years they shall return from the service of the work, and shall serve no more;

While the Cohain HaGadol could be elderly, a Levy who was doing physical work in the Mishkan or guard duty in the Mikdash was to be retired at the age of 50.

26 but shall minister with their brethren in the tent of meeting, to keep the charge, but they shall do no manner of service. Thus shalt thou do unto the Levites touching their charges.'

They shall be teachers to the other Leviim, elder advisors and teachers of Torah and tradition to the general population.

9:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the first month of the second year after they were come out of the land of Egypt, saying: 2 'Let the children of Israel keep the passover in its appointed season. 3 In the fourteenth day of this month, at dusk, ye shall keep it in its appointed season; according to all the statutes of it, and according to all the ordinances thereof, shall ye keep it.' 4 And Moses spoke unto the children of Israel, that they should keep the Passover.

Perhaps, as was with the blood of the Korban on the lintel of the door in Egypt, the Korban Pessach and not eating leavening was a one-time event. Now, we see that the observance would be in every generation.

5 And they kept the Passover in the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, at dusk, in the wilderness of Sinai; according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did the children of Israel. 6 But there were certain men, who were unclean by the dead body of a man, so that they could not keep the passover on that day; and they came before Moses and before Aaron on that day. 7 And those men said unto him: 'We are unclean by the dead body of a man; wherefore are we to be kept back, so as not to bring the offering of the LORD in its appointed season among the children of Israel?' 8 And Moses said unto them: 'Stay ye, that I may hear what the LORD will command concerning you.'

Were they certain men or cousins of Moshe and Aaron who buried the two sons of Aaron. It is also possible that other people died that year from the 8th day onwards up until Pessach and others were Tumay.

9 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 10 'Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If any man of you or of your generations shall be unclean by reason of a dead body, or be in a journey afar off, yet he shall keep the Passover unto the LORD; 11 in the second month on the fourteenth day at dusk they shall keep it; they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs; 12 they shall leave none of it unto the morning, nor break a bone thereof; according to all the statute of the Passover they shall keep it.

Therefore, we have the law of the observance of Pessach Sheni. The main difference here is that one can have leaven in his possession and the observance is a one-night affair but not a full Yom Tov and work could be performed.

13 But the man that is clean, and is not on a journey, and forbears to keep the Passover, that soul shall be cut off from his people; because he brought not the offering of the LORD in its appointed season, that man shall bear his sin. 14 And if a stranger shall sojourn among you, and will keep the Passover unto the LORD: according to the statute of the Passover, and according to the ordinance thereof, so shall he do; ye shall have one statute, both for the stranger, and for him that is born in the land.'

Stranger is not a Ger Tzeddek as he or she is a full Bnei Yisrael after approval and Mikvah. Rather the Stranger is the non-Jewish Slave. And this is not the Ger Toshav who can possess Chametz and buy our Chametz.

15 And on the day that the tabernacle was reared up the cloud covered the tabernacle, even the tent of the testimony; and at even there was upon the tabernacle as it were the appearance of fire, until morning. 16 So it was always: the cloud covered it, and the appearance of fire by night.

We can picture this phenomenon in our mind but have not seen it in 3300 plus years.

17 And whenever the cloud was taken up from over the Tent, then after that the children of Israel journeyed; and in the place where the cloud abode, there the children of Israel encamped. … 20 And sometimes the cloud was a few days upon the tabernacle; according to the commandment of the LORD they remained encamped, and according to the commandment of the LORD they journeyed.

Can you imagine a world without taxes and government and everything is run by HASHEM such as when you move from a camp or stay encamped? This is how our forefathers lived 40 years.

21 And sometimes the cloud was from evening until morning; and when the cloud was taken up in the morning, they journeyed; or if it continued by day and by night, when the cloud was taken up, they journeyed. … 23 At the commandment of the LORD they encamped, and at the commandment of the LORD they journeyed; they kept the charge of the LORD, at the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses.

So the Bnei Yisrael moved a lot in the first year of the Exodus and the last year of the Exodus but the other 38 years they did not move too much.

10:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Make thee two trumpets of silver; of beaten work shalt thou make them; and they shall be unto thee for the calling of the congregation, and for causing the camps to set forward.

The Trumpets would also be used in the Mikdash but their main purpose was for an alert system to either gather the people or warn them about some event taking through this.

3 And when they shall blow with them, all the congregation shall gather themselves unto thee at the door of the tent of meeting. 4 And if they blow but with one, then the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather themselves unto thee. 5 And when ye blow an alarm, the camps that lie on the east side shall take their journey. 6 And when ye blow an alarm the second time, the camps that lie on the south side shall set forward; they shall blow an alarm for their journeys. …

The camp traveling is detailed below.

13 And they took their first journey, according to the commandment of the LORD by the hand of Moses. 14 And in the first place the standard of the camp of the children of Judah set forward according to their hosts; … 18 And the standard of the camp of Reuben set forward according to their hosts; and over his host was Elizur the son of Shedeur. …  21 And the Kohathites the bearers of the sanctuary set forward, that the tabernacle might be set up against their coming. 22 And the standard of the camp of the children of Ephraim set forward according to their hosts; … 25 And the standard of the camp of the children of Dan, which was the rearward of all the camps, set forward according to their hosts;

This was the movement of the camp.

… 29 And Moses said unto Hobab, the son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law: 'We are journeying unto the place of which the LORD said: I will give it you; come thou with us, and we will do thee good; for the LORD hath spoken good concerning Israel.' 30 And he said unto him: 'I will not go; but I will depart to mine own land, and to my kindred.' 31 And he said: 'Leave us not, I pray thee; forasmuch as thou know how we are to encamp in the wilderness, and thou shalt be to us instead of eyes. 32 And it shall be, if thou go with us, yea, it shall be, that what good soever the LORD shall do unto us, the same will we do unto thee.'

This story appears to be from Parsha Yisro and is now detailing the conversation. However, the next sentence does appear to change the time line.

33 And they set forward from the mount of the LORD three days' journey; and the ark of the covenant of the LORD went before them three days' journey, to seek out a resting-place for them.

Mt. Sinai was 3 days from where Yisro met them, but at that time the Bnei Yisrael did not have the Teva.

34 And the cloud of the LORD was over them by day, when they set forward from the camp.

No need for sunscreen, the cloud automatically shielded them.

35 And it came to pass, when the ark set forward, that Moses said: 'Rise up, O LORD, and let Thine enemies be scattered; and let them that hate Thee flee before Thee.' 36 And when it rested, he said: 'Return, O LORD, unto the ten thousands of the families of Israel.'

The first sentence we say when we take out the Sefer Torah but the second we do not say.

11:1 And the people were as murmurers, speaking evil in the ears of the LORD; and when the LORD heard it, His anger was kindled; and the fire of the LORD burnt among them, and devoured in the uttermost part of the camp. 2 And the people cried unto Moses; and Moses prayed unto the LORD, and the fire abated. 3 And the name of that place was called Taberah, because the fire of the LORD burnt among them. 4 And the mixed multitude that was among them fell a lusting; and the children of Israel also wept on their part, and said: 'Would that we were given flesh to eat! 5 We remember the fish, which we were wont to eat in Egypt for nought; the cucumbers, and the melons, and the leeks, and the onions, and the garlic; 6 but now our soul is dried away; there is nothing at all; we have nought save this manna to look to.'—

What was wrong with the Mann? Absolutely nothing but they became bored and wanted fresh flesh, fruits and variation in their diet. The crying here should not have been as they had enough food.

7 Now the manna was like coriander seed, and the appearance thereof as the appearance of bdellium. 8 The people went about, and gathered it, and ground it in mills, or beat it in mortars, and seethed it in pots, and made cakes of it; and the taste of it was as the taste of a cake baked with oil.

Now HASHEM is losing patience with the people. Moshe is at a total loss here what to do and cries to HASHEM.

12 Have I conceived all this people? have I brought them forth, that Thou should say unto me: Carry them in thy bosom, as a nursing-father carried the sucking child, unto the land which Thou didst swear unto their fathers? 13 Whence should I have flesh to give unto all this people? for they trouble me with their weeping, saying: Give us flesh, that we may eat. 14 I am not able to bear all this people myself alone, because it is too heavy for me. 15 And if Thou deal thus with me, kill me, I pray Thee, out of hand, if I have found favor in Thy sight; and let me not look upon my wretchedness.'

Moshe will get the Sanhedrin to give him some relief.

16 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Gather unto Me seventy men of the elders of Israel, whom thou know to be the elders of the people, and officers over them; and bring them unto the tent of meeting, that they may stand there with thee.

These men will become the Sanhedrin.

17 And I will come down and speak with thee there; and I will take of the spirit which is upon thee, and will put it upon them; and they shall bear the burden of the people with thee, that thou bear it not thyself alone.

A leader can just do so much and HASHEM is telling Moshe to whom to delegate power and judgement too.

18 And say thou unto the people: Sanctify yourselves against to-morrow, and ye shall eat flesh; for ye have wept in the ears of the LORD, saying: Would that we were given flesh to eat! for it was well with us in Egypt; therefore the LORD will give you flesh, and ye shall eat. 19 Ye shall not eat one day, nor two days, nor five days, neither ten days, nor twenty days; 20 but a whole month, until it come out at your nostrils, and it be loathsome unto you; because that ye have rejected the LORD who is among you, and have troubled Him with weeping, saying: Why, now, came we forth out of Egypt?' 21 And Moses said: 'The people, among whom I am, are six hundred thousand men on foot; and yet Thou hast said: I will give them flesh, that they may eat a whole month! 22 If flocks and herds be slain for them, will they suffice them? or if all the fish of the sea be gathered together for them, will they suffice them?' {P}
23 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Is the LORD'S hand waxed short? now shalt thou see whether My word shall come to pass unto thee or not.' 24 And Moses went out, and told the people the words of the LORD; and he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people, and set them round about the Tent. 25 And the LORD came down in the cloud, and spoke unto him, and took of the spirit that was upon him, and put it upon the seventy elders; and it came to pass, that, when the spirit rested upon them, they prophesied, but they did so no more.

26 But there remained two men in the camp, the name of the one was Eldad, and the name of the other Medad; and the spirit rested upon them; and they were of them that were recorded, but had not gone out unto the Tent; and they prophesied in the camp.

Actually, they were worthy of being an elder but because they gave up their position for Shalom in the camp, they received prophecy through their humility.

27 And there ran a young man, and told Moses, and said: 'Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.' 28 And Joshua the son of Nun, the minister of Moses from his youth up, answered and said: 'My lord Moses, shut them in.' 29 And Moses said unto him: 'Art thou jealous for my sake? would that all the LORD'S people were prophets, that the LORD would put His spirit upon them!'

Moshe was glad that they could prophesize and relieve the burden from him.

30 And Moses withdrew into the camp, he and the elders of Israel. 31 And there went forth a wind from the LORD, and brought across quails from the sea, and let them fall by the camp, about a day's journey on this side, and a day's journey on the other side, round about the camp, and about two cubits above the face of the earth. … 33 While the flesh was yet between their teeth, ere it was chewed, the anger of the LORD was kindled against the people, and the LORD smote the people with a very great plague.

They wanted the quail so much that they did not cook it and picked up the poison chemicals caused in their wings from the flight. Those that waited and cooked did not have this problem. This was pure glutton behavior and subsequently they perished.

34 And the name of that place was called Kibroth-hattaavah, because there they buried the people that lusted. 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah the people journeyed unto Hazeroth; and they abode at Hazeroth.

Literally the graves of lusting or being gluttons.

12:1 And Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married; for he had married a Cushite woman. 2 And they said: 'Hath the LORD indeed spoken only with Moses? hath He not spoken also with us?' And the LORD heard it.-- 3 Now the man Moses was very meek, above all the men that were upon the face of the earth.-- 4 And the LORD spoke suddenly unto Moses, and unto Aaron, and unto Miriam: 'Come out ye three unto the tent of meeting.' And they three came out. 5 And the LORD came down in a pillar of cloud, and stood at the door of the Tent, and called Aaron and Miriam; and they both came forth. … 9 And the anger of the LORD was kindled against them; and He departed. 10 And when the cloud was removed from over the Tent, behold, Miriam was leprous, as white as snow; and Aaron looked upon Miriam; and, behold, she was leprous. …

She spoke bad and got the spiritual version of Leprosy for Lashon HaRa. Moshe also did when he had little faith and said “They will not listen to me” So he put his hand into his bosom and it came out leprous and put it in again and was normal. He did not know better then but Miriam at this juncture should have known better.

13 And Moses cried unto the LORD, saying: 'Heal her now, O God, I beseech Thee.'

This prayer is in three words in Hebrew. It is short “please heal her” and precise no need to ramble before HASHEM.

14 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'If her father had but spit in her face, should she not hide in shame seven days? let her be shut up without the camp seven days, and after that she shall be brought in again.' 15 And Miriam was shut up without the camp seven days; and the people journeyed not till Miriam was brought in again.

Even though Miriam had misbehaved and was outside of the camp, because she waited by the Nile to see what would be with Moshe, she received HaKaras HaTov from HASHEM and the whole nation waited for her one week.

16 And afterward the people journeyed from Hazeroth, and pitched in the wilderness of Paran.
Ble Neder next week in honor the theme of the spies. I will tell my tale of making a Kiddush HASHEM on border patrol.

If only I knew by Rabbi Y. Tilles
http://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1068-37

On the date of Hei [5th] Teves in the Hebrew year 5747 (1987), the Chabad movement received the affirmative court ruling concerning the ownership of their huge priceless library. Two days later, the Lubavitcher Rebbe announced on an international hookup that whatever anyone requested [in writing], their wishes will be fulfilled!
The Jewish world went wild. Requests were pouring into Lubavitch World Headquarters in Brooklyn round the clock. Fax technology was fairly new then. The Chabad emissary in Paris, Rabbi Shmuel "Mula" Azimov went to Air France and borrowed 3 fax machines from them, which were then in operation for 24 hours straight!
Rabbi Motti Hasofer was then a Lubavitcher emissary in Melbourne, Australia. When the directive came from the Rebbe, he and his wife were visiting her parents in Sydney. They called everyone they knew back in Melbourne, telegrammed others (before email), and went from door to door in the Sidney neighborhood they were staying in asking people to write in.
Everyone was intrigued. Only one person refused outright to write in a request -- the young Mrs. Hasofer's father! A holocaust survivor from Europe, he would answer every approach to him about anything Jewish with, "Where was G-d during the holocaust?"
After speaking to everyone they could, the daughter again asked her father to please reconsider and request something. He said that he wouldn't, but she can request for him that tomorrow when he goes fishing he should get a good catch.

So she did.
The following morning at 6AM there was loud knocking on the Hasofer's bedroom door. It was her father. He exclaimed excitedly, "Let me tell you what happened.
"I went out with my friend at 4 this morning to go fishing. When we arrived at our preferred spot, we saw that there was a commercial Italian fishing boat there. With their big nets and other equipment. we thought we wouldn't catch anything.
"My friend and I agreed to try our luck anyway. I put my rod in and immediately caught a fish, then another and another, and more.
"My friend was very despondent because he caught nothing. I told him, 'you know what, let's change places.'
"So we did. I put my rod in, in the place where my friend had been sitting, and caught a fish and then another etc. My friend didn't catch anything, so he felt even worse. I told him, 'Don't feel bad. This is happening because I received a blessing.'
"The boat filled up with fish pretty quickly, so we decided to return to shore. When we passed near the large Italian commercial vessel, the men on deck asked why we were leaving so soon. We replied that our boat was full.
"They pointed up to heaven and said to me, 'Your G-d must have been watching over you. We are not catching anything.'"
Concluding his story, he handed his daughter a huge fish and told her to use it for Shabbos.
That Shabbos he came to shul for the first time since his childhood, and soon after that started coming to shul regularly. On one occasion in the shul, he overheard one boy asking his companion, "Who is that man?"
The other boy replied, "That's the man who could have asked for anything and he asked for some fish."

Biographical note:
Rabbi Menachem Mendel Schneerson, the Lubavitcher Rebbe: [11 Nissan 5662 - 3 Tammuz 5754 (April 1902 - June 1994 C.E.)], became the seventh Rebbe of the Chabad dynasty after his father-in-law's passing on 10 Shvat 5710 (1950 C.E.). He is widely acknowledged as the greatest Jewish leader
* of the second half of the 20th century. Although a dominant scholar in both the revealed and hidden aspects of Torah and fluent in many languages and scientific subjects, the Rebbe is best known for his extraordinary love and concern for every Jew on the planet. His emissaries around the globe dedicated to strengthening Judaism number in the thousands. Hundreds of volumes of his teachings have been printed, as well as dozens of English renditions. *Disclaimer I don’t know if he was the greatest as he personally held in awe Rabbi Moshe Feinstein but he had good mass media to the non-religious. Rabbi Ovadia Yosef also had the mass media which the Roshei Yeshiva and other Torah Giants did not have.

Editorial. Sometimes we ignore HaKaras HaTov. We often give it to strangers but not to family. We often do things for the sake of heaven and plug on no matter the difficulty. The last time that I threw a Bar Mitzvah was for my second son. I was before my 39th birthday with a lot more energy. I had a small party at the Kotel, in a hall and the Synagogue where I went. This time I am about 71 with thank G-D a few thousand readers who at least scan this blogspot for whatever.

I did next to nothing for the Bar Mitzvah except press Menashe to meet a goal of learning Meseches Berachos. I had planned that he learn about a Daf and a quarter each week. But being a child, he played here and there. Three months before the Bar Mitzvah he perhaps had 15 or 20 Dafim completed. I told him that it was sad that he did not listen to me as he was over 40 Dafim short with only 3 months and it looks impossible. I told him that he disappointed me.

He is a fellow with genius IQ and believe it or not, he completed it. Read his Parsha quite well and even the first reading of the next Parsha for Mincha. However, the success of the Kiddush, Party and having is father, my grandson and wife, his three siblings with their families, obtaining the photographer, catering, halls with the exception of the hall in my Schul fell upon my wife.

I bought sodas, and other goodies but most of the Chessed fell upon my wife. Sometimes at our personal time and energy. In the past few years, I have regained a temperament of a parent and not grandparent.

Rav Mimran Shlita is my confident and knows how much energy I put into Menashe, potential converts and other things I do. He gave me praise and then the Rav of the Yeshuv praised me by name and my wife for our Chessed to Menashe. It was nice to hear but I disputed the Rav and he said, I did very little and my wife did all the work. He said that he was the Moreh the Osra and it was a Psak Din. I did not argue further.

Still, having a good wife, who sacrifices my help allows me to write this weekly and she deserves praise.

In the end, my son and daughter helped us get the food out for the Kiddush and three meals with 40 plus people although some were infants.

I have a friend, a former Marnie Sgt. who hopefully is healthy, he was part of 2000 men going up a hill with 10,000 or more N. Koreans. On one side was an American Indian who was honored by my friend and my friend ordered his men not to make fun of him. He said Serge I got you covered as he took a mortar which knocked his head off and the body crawled forward for a few seconds. For these people we grieve.

Quneitra the next flash point-Iran. In 1971, I was on a tour of the Golan and Quneitra was in our hands mostly destroyed in the Six Day War. In 1980 I was on border patrol and Quneitra was given to Syria as part of the cease-fire agreement. The residents were mostly military or retired military with sheep sent into our mine fields to see if they were anti-personnel or anti-tank. Up until 5 years ago everything was quiet. https://www.debka.com/as-gaza-front-cools-iran-and-syria-move-on-their-next-flashpoint-quneitra/
