Parsha Shelach, Kidddush HASHEM Part 1, Holocaust Story.

I received a msg. last week that Golda Shulamis bas Celia was better but she had a relapse and needs prayers.

Parsha Shelach

Oral Torah: Behind the scenes. The people wanted Moshe to send out spies rather than depend upon HASHEM and faith only. Moshe turned to HASHEM and got the following answer:

13:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Send thou men, that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I give unto the children of Israel; of every tribe of their fathers shall ye send a man, everyone a prince among them.'

To be the prince one had to be wealthy, moral strong. G-D fearing individual and one of the best in leadership and other qualities.

3 And Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran according to the commandment of the LORD; all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. … 6 Of the tribe of Judah, Caleb the son of Yephunneh. … 8 Of the tribe of Ephraim, Hoshea the son of Nun. … 16 These are the names of the men that Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Hoshea the son of Nun Joshua. 17 And Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan, and said unto them: 'Get you up here into the South, and go up into the mountains;

This is how you should enter the land.

18 and see the land, what it is; and the people that dwells therein, whether they are strong or weak, whether they are few or many;

The questions are for spies to report their observations only to Moshe not to state opinions or leak information to the public.
19 and what the land is that they dwell in, whether it is good or bad; and what cities they are that they dwell in, whether in camps, or in strongholds;

What type of a land is it? Can it support our population and future growth?

20 and what the land is, whether it is fat or lean, whether there is wood therein, or not. And be ye of good courage, and bring of the fruit of the land.'--Now the time was the time of the first-ripe grapes.—

In Egypt they had very few trees. Moshe had been in Africa to the jungles as prince and wanted to know if the trees were sparse like in Egypt or worse like in the desert.  They would report upon the hill country of Ephraim which had many forests.

21 So they went up, and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin unto Rehob, at the entrance to Hamat.

From Nahal Zin or where Ben Gurion lived until the sea lower than Ashkelon probably closer to Gaza. They then proceeded north until Hamat in Syria. Not Hamat Geder like I thought and wrote about years ago but about 200 or more kilometers not of Damascus.

22 And they went up into the South, and came unto Hebron; and Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the children of Anak, were there.--Now Hebron was built seven years before Zoan in Egypt.—

These three abnormally tall people were of a family of giants either they had gigantisms in their genes or they just happened to be very tall for normal people like our basketball players today. Remember, that the majority of the Bnei Yisrael outside of the priestly class of Levi were slaves and perhaps lacking foods growing up. In my grandfather’s generation my European grandfather was about 5’ 2” and my grandmother perhaps 4” 10” while my American grandparents were taller. My grandmother 5’ to 5’ 2” and my grandfather 6’ or over. It would be of little surprise to me if people the size of my European Grandparents next to the equivalent of Basketball players.

23 And they came unto the valley of Eshcol, and cut down from thence a branch with one cluster of grapes, and they bore it upon a pole between two; they took also of the pomegranates, and of the figs.—

Eshcol was around Chevron. Today the name is in the southern part of the Negev but not then.

24 That place was called the valley of Eshcol, because of the cluster which the children of Israel cut down from thence.-- 25 And they returned from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26 And they went and came to Moses, and to Aaron, and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, unto the wilderness of Paran, to Kadesh; and brought back word unto them, and unto all the congregation, and showed them the fruit of the land.

The cluster of grapes was gigantic according to the Medrash even though we don’t see such occurrences today. Was the land ruined by the Babylonians? Romans? Arabs? Or by not taking Teruma, Ma’aseh and observing Shmita?

27 And they told him, and said: 'We came unto the land whither thou sent us, and surely it flows with milk and honey; and this is the fruit of it.

When they started with the Lashon HaRa they first started talking good about the land. This is similar to the famous “Friends, Romans and Country Men…” in Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar starting out with what the powers that be and the people are expecting and then turning things around.

28 Howbeit the people that dwell in the land are fierce, and the cities are fortified, and very great; and moreover we saw the children of Anak there.

Up until this sentence everything was going according to plan. Chaim and Maves (life and death) are controlled by the Lashon. As soon as they said this, the spies were destined to die that night. The people that cried on that night (Tisha B’ Av) made it into a night of crying for all generations.

29 Amalek dwells in the land of the South; and the Hittite, and the Jebusite, and the Amorite, dwell in the mountains; and the Canaanite dwells by the sea, and along by the side of the Jordan.'

In case they did not have problems with giants and other things, they would come across Amalek again and that war was fresh in their memories.

30 And Caleb stilled the people toward Moses, and said: 'We should go up at once, and possess it; for we are well able to overcome it.'

Yehoshua did not speak out as he was close to Moshe Rabbaynu. Calev was from the tribe of Malchus and therefore spoke out. It does not say that one of his off-springs was David HaMelech but he moved to Chevron and David was from Chevron. Perhaps some daughter-granddaughter was somebody who sired the parents of David.

31 But the men that went up with him said: 'We are not able to go up against the people; for they are stronger than we.' 32 And they spread an evil report of the land which they had spied out unto the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, through which we have passed to spy it out, is a land that eats up the inhabitants thereof; and all the people that we saw in it are men of great stature. 33 And there we saw the Nephilim, the sons of Anak, who come of the Nephilim; and we were in our own sight as grasshoppers, and so we were in their sight.'

Just because you feel like a grasshopper does not mean that they viewed you as such. During the Yom Kippur War the Syrians surrendered quickly to the Israelis when the offensive began. They told the conquering forces that they the waves of men dressed in white uniforms kept coming and they exhausted their bullets on them. Except for the ski patrol in winter, nobody wears white into battle.

14:1 And all the congregation lifted up their voice, and cried; and the people wept that night. 2 And all the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron; and the whole congregation said unto them: 'Would that we had died in the land of Egypt! or would we had died in this wilderness! 3 And wherefore doth the LORD bring us unto this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will be a prey; were it not better for us to return into Egypt?'

Such a horrible thing to say after a year of freedom but wait there is more.

4 And they said one to another: 'Let us make a captain, and let us return into Egypt.' 5 Then Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel.

This congregation has become too impossible for words after all the miracles and Chanchaga from HASHEM.

6 And Joshua the son of Nun and Caleb the son of Yephunneh, who were of them that spied out the land, rent their clothes.

They made the Egel HaZahav and HASHEM forgave about entering the land, the same with other tests. However, when they rebelled against going into the land, they signed their death warrants.

7 And they spoke unto all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: 'The land, which we passed through to spy it out, is an exceeding good land. 8 If the LORD delight in us, then He will bring us into this land, and give it unto us--a land which flows with milk and honey. 9 Only rebel not against the LORD, neither fear ye the people of the land; for they are bread for us; their defense is removed from over them, and the LORD is with us; fear them not.'

The L-RD has brought about that the land is good and that the people will die off as we spied. You have nothing to fear.

10 But all the congregation bade stone them with stones, when the glory of the LORD appeared in the tent of meeting unto all the children of Israel.

They were ready for anarchy and stoning their leaders until HASHEM intervened. We shall see in Sefer Yehoshua that the second time spies were sent out, it was done top secretly. The most loyal believers in HASHEM were recruited and that was zealous Pinchas HaCohain and Calev. Calev is now over 80 so it is not so suspicious that an old man is teaching the young man something. They don’t even have to go far as Rachav supplies them with the information that Yericho and the other inhabitants are living in fear of Am Yisrael.

11 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'How long will this people despise Me? and how long will they not believe in Me, for all the signs which I have wrought among them? 12 I will smite them with the pestilence, and destroy them, and will make of thee a nation greater and mightier than they.'

HASHEM was about ready to destroy the nation. For they were now not an AM but a mob of every man by himself.

13 And Moses said unto the LORD: 'When the Egyptians shall hear--for Thou brought up this people in Thy might from among them—

HASHEM please don’t do this for you will make a Chilul HASHEM in front of Mitzrayim.

14 they will say to the inhabitants of this land, who have heard that Thou LORD art in the midst of this people; inasmuch as Thou LORD art seen face to face, and Thy cloud standeth over them, and Thou goest before them, in a pillar of cloud by day, and in a pillar of fire by night; 15 now if Thou shalt kill this people as one man, then the nations which have heard the fame of Thee will speak, saying: 16 Because the LORD was not able to bring this people into the land which He swore unto them, therefore He hath slain them in the wilderness. 17 And now, I pray Thee, let the power of the LORD be great, according as Thou hast spoken, saying: 18 The LORD is slow to anger, and plenteous in lovingkindness, forgiving iniquity and transgression, and that will by no means clear the guilty; visiting the iniquity of the fathers upon the children, upon the third and upon the fourth generation.

Moshe prays the 13 Attributes which bring about the mercy and compassion of HASHEM.

19 Pardon, I pray Thee, the iniquity of this people according unto the greatness of Thy lovingkindness, and according as Thou hast forgiven this people, from Egypt even until now.' 20 And the LORD said: 'I have pardoned according to thy word.

HASHEM pardons from immediate death like we repeat the words on Yom Kippur.

21 But in very deed, as I live--and all the earth shall be filled with the glory of the LORD-- 22 surely all those men that have seen My glory, and My signs, which I wrought in Egypt and in the wilderness, yet have put Me to proof these ten times, and have not hearkened to My voice; 23 surely they shall not see the land which I swore unto their fathers, neither shall any of them that despised Me see it. 24 But My servant Caleb, because he had another spirit with him, and hath followed Me fully, him will I bring into the land where into he went; and his seed shall possess it.

With very few exceptions, the corpses of the generation will be scattered in the wilderness and only the next generation can posses the land. For the next generation will have been some who saw the miracles or were born outside of Egypt and they will never ever want to return.

25 Now the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the Vale; tomorrow turn ye, and get you into the wilderness by the way to the Red Sea.'

Now turn southwards as there is no entrance into Eretz Yisrael while this generation lives.

26 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 27 'How long shall I bear with this evil congregation, that keep murmuring against Me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they keep murmuring against Me. 28 Say unto them: As I live, saith the LORD, surely as ye have spoken in Mine ears, so will I do to you: 29 your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness, and all that were numbered of you, according to your whole number, from twenty years old and upward, ye that have murmured against Me;
The whole generation is to die-out.

30 surely ye shall not come into the land, concerning which I lifted up My hand that I would make you dwell therein, save Caleb the son of Yephunneh, and Joshua the son of Nun. 31 But your little ones, that ye said would be a prey, them will I bring in, and they shall know the land which ye have rejected. 32 But as for you, your carcasses shall fall in this wilderness.

You will not die at once but die over a period of 40 years natural deaths.

33 And your children shall be wanderers in the wilderness forty years, and shall bear your strayings, until your carcasses be consumed in the wilderness. 34 After the number of the days in which ye spied out the land, even forty days, for every day a year, shall ye bear your iniquities, even forty years, and ye shall know My displeasure. 35 I the LORD have spoken, surely this will I do unto all this evil congregation, that are gathered together against Me; in this wilderness they shall be consumed, and there they shall die.' 36 And the men, whom Moses sent to spy out the land, and who, when they returned, made all the congregation to murmur against him, by bringing up an evil report against the land, 37 even those men that did bring up an evil report of the land, died by the plague before the LORD. 38 But Joshua the son of Nun, and Caleb the son of Jephunneh, remained alive of those men that went to spy out the land.
17 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 18 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When ye come into the land whither I bring you, 19 then it shall be, that, when ye eat of the bread of the land, ye shall set apart a portion for a gift unto the LORD. 20 Of the first of your dough ye shall set apart a cake for a gift; as that which is set apart of the threshing-floor, so shall ye set it apart. 21 Of the first of your dough ye shall give unto the LORD a portion for a gift throughout your generations.

Challah for the Cohain or today we burn it.

… 32 And while the children of Israel were in the wilderness, they found a man gathering sticks upon the Sabbath day.

Can’t even go one generation without somebody violating the Shabbos.

33 And they that found him gathering sticks brought him unto Moses and Aaron, and unto all the congregation. … 36 And all the congregation brought him without the camp, and stoned him with stones, and he died, as the LORD commanded Moses.
37 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 38 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and bid them that they make them throughout their generations fringes in the corners of their garments, and that they put with the fringe of each corner a thread of blue.

With the destruction of two Mikdashim, we lost the secret of the Techelles so most of us don’t where blue but plain white Tzitzis.

39 And it shall be unto you for a fringe, that ye may look upon it, and remember all the commandments of the LORD, and do them; and that ye go not about after your own heart and your own eyes, after which ye use to go astray; 40 that ye may remember and do all My commandments, and be holy unto your God. 41 I am the LORD your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, to be your God: I am the LORD your God.'

Kiddush HASHEM while patrolling the border.
By Rabbi Rachamim Pauli
Part 1

It was late July to August 1977 CE aka 5737. The Likud had taken power a few months before. I was sent up to Metulla with some other Paramedics that had taken the same medical corps course. I was considered the title “Chovesh Kravi” or front-line paramedic capable of acting under fire. I considered myself a bit differently. On one hand if I was on the front line, I could really look a former colleague, Moshe Levy, in the eye as almost an equal as he was given the Israeli equivalent of the Congressional Medal of Honor for his activities in the Yom Kippur War. I was a fellow who only volunteered to help the home guard fill sandbags for shelters. I had donated blood but still compared to Moshe felt lowly.

I was called up with my friend Eli Chapernik and others to the border in Metulla. Eli was sent to Har Dov and I was sent to Moshav Margalit right on the hill above Kiriat Shemona. I was broken in by the part of Golani 51 defending the borders. I had to know how to fire the 0.5 antiaircraft gun and the automatic mag with 1000 rounds per minute. Only later was I to learn how to put in and take out the ammunition from the guns and take them off the APC.

I did not know how to keep a low profile in the thin half-track. The half-track was good for the Sinai Campaign but the armor was semi-useless against an RPG. Drivers, soldiers and the commander could be replaced on night duty. However, 7 days a week with often 4 hours of sleep, the paramedic was needed. When the patrol went out to make dust or dirt churned up in the path, the people in the back had to put a handkerchief over their noses. This was for preventing infiltration as in the morning the tracker would look for prints in the dust or dirt as we covered him and had orders to shoot 360 degrees on all sides of the vehicle if infiltration occurred.

The first deployment to Margalit, I had a sergeant that was eating sunflower seeds nervously. He was worried about scouts sent into Lebanon to help the South Lebanese Army fight the terrorists. He did not want me to do the border patrol for I was Chovesh level 5 and he wanted level 6 on the border. So here I was armed with 8 cartridges of 30 or 31 bullets for the M-16, 3 injections of morphine for injured soldiers just in case and I was left to be on guard duty by myself on the base for the Serge wanted a level 6 guy. On Shabbos closer to Eli’s post, I saw the strangest of battles before me. Our forces were Lebanon near Ghargar (sounds like a guttural R in the name Roger). There were three forces in Lebanon one was the S.L.A another the P.L.O and the third unknown. Each shot at the other on Shabbos. Eli had to answer the radio to tell the Regiment Commander that it was not at our forces. He had Binoculars and saw it very close up. I only saw from the other side of the valley between Kiriat Shemona and the Golan Heights.

There was a bit of a problem. I got to Margalit on Thursday night and had the next day to prepare myself for Shabbos. I saw that the large medical kit that I had been given was lacking certain bandages for battle, also there were medications in short supply. On Friday night, the commander asked me for something against a headache. I managed to find the last Optalgin-Acamol in the kit for him. I told him so. I also told him that we had to order for the Brigade Headquarters or Northern Command the needed supplies.

On Sunday or Monday there was a change of Regiments and the Sergeant gave us passes to go home for 24 hours while the new units organized themselves so we all got to go home.

It was good that I did not immediately go on border patrol as there was an artillery regiment shelling the terrorists with either 155 mm or 175 mm shells. The ground would shake in the area and the noise was scary. By going home and coming back, I was prepared for this. [One of the main reasons for PTSD or shell-shock from the Yom Kippur War was that the soldiers went from the peaceful Synagogue to a raging battle. At least this would not happen to me for this reason.]

For close to the next 30 days, I was on border patrol. Some nights were foggy that I could not see more than a meter or two into Lebanon. Other nights I looked at trees, scrubs and boulders that could hide a terrorist or two. We did not trust the blue helmeted UN soldiers but waved at 3 AM to the single Arab who might be Christian or a spy reporting to the Mossad about the enemy.

One time Ruth Dayan came to border another time PM Begin met with Said Hadad but I was too tired to see the meeting. Sometimes when I was awake, I went to the good Fence to be near the Dr. to learn more. A time that I was there I talked to a reporter from Newsday and got my photo in the Paper and a small right up about the fellow from Queens Long Island doing Border Patrol in Israel.

Sorry to post this, but we have become aware that there is a tzedaka con artist who is operating in America and is now coming to Israel.  He has literally scammed people out of thousands of dollars asking for money for weddings for needy couples, which are nonexistent, and then pocketing the money.
There is good reason to believe that he may be targeting wealthy/American communities in Israel.
