Parsha Korach, Kiddush HASHEM in the IDF, and more

REMEMBER THE DRASHA – BLOG IS GENERALLY PUBLISHED AT THE LATEST BY 7 AM EAST COAST USA TIME OR 2 PM ISRAEL TIME. If you do not see it advertised you can click the site.

I forgot who gave me the name Moshe ben Bella to pray for please contact me if prayers are needed for him or I will remove him from my list. I can be contacted directly for those who know my e-mail or via Facebook Rachamim HaRav Pauli.

Last week I had to finish up the Drasha quicker than planned. There was the case for the Chatas of the Congregation and perhaps more on Tzitzis. However, for the third year in a row the old pipes to the solar hot water heater began leaking above my office. This time I did not call the plumber, which was the original leak problem, but the solar heater man and he put it outside to protect the interior of the house. In a month, the water damage can be repaired and then I can finally stop worrying about leaky pipes over my head.

Parsha Korach

We had all sorts of problems from the various tribes and mixed multitude. Now a personality problem arose in the tribe of Levi. Korach had been passed over by Elishama, Aaron and Moshe in the hierarchy. Aaron was the Cohain, Moshe the prophet and king and Elishama the prince of Levi. It was from HASHEM. He should have been happy with the fact that his children were carrying he holiest objects and that he would get 10% Maaser with the other Leviim. But no, he was extremely rich and wanted more. He wanted power. The children of Reuven also felt left out because Yosef got the Bechor. It did not matter if it was deserved for Yacov had on the intention to marry Rachel and not Leah. If it had not been for the Lavan switching the bride at the last minute, Reuven would not have even been born. [Of course everything was from HASHEM for the tribes needed to be born.]

16:1 Now Korach, the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On, the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took men; 2 and they rose up in face of Moses, with certain of the children of Israel, two hundred and fifty men; they were princes of the congregation, the elect men of the assembly, men of renown;

It was the wife of On Ben Peleg that saved him from the fate of the others. She was a smart lady. If Moshe won, On would suffer a bad fate like the spies, gluttons and others before him. If Korach won, On would only be a small cog in the wheel of State. She got him drunk, combed her hair at the entrance of the tent and the Charedim looked away and let the drunk sleep through the whole affair. On lived because he had a woman of valor for a wife.

3 and they assembled themselves together against Moses and against Aaron, and said unto them: 'Ye take too much upon you, seeing all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and the LORD is among them; wherefore then lift ye up yourselves above the assembly of the LORD?'

Each time there was a rebellion, Moshe and Aaron fell on their faces for Tachanun. Also they were both humble and the accusation was great.

4 And when Moses heard it, he fell upon his face. 5 And he spoke unto Korach and unto all his company, saying: 'In the morning the LORD will show who are His, and who is holy, and will cause him to come near unto Him; even him whom He may choose will He cause to come near unto Him.

Why did Moshe bother answering him? I guess because he was such a close relative from Kohath of Levi that Moshe being humble did not put him off.

6 This do: take you censors, Korach, and all his company; 7 and put fire therein, and put incense upon them before the LORD to-morrow; and it shall be that the man whom the LORD doth choose, he shall be holy; ye take too much upon you, ye sons of Levi.'

Moshe reminds them that they are Leviim. Korach has to listen to Moshe to make the challenge. I believe his sons saw this and desisted and from them came Shmuel HaNovi. So if he had to listen to Moshe then why did he challenge him? I assume it was a toxic mixture of jealousy, hurt feelings at being left out of a job as he was neither, king, prince, priest and past 50 years old. Sinas Chinam or blind hatred that caused the dispute. The word for political party in Hebrew is Miflaga and the root comes from Peleg or divide as was in the days of Peleg with Migdal Bavel. (Beresheis 11)

8 And Moses said unto Korah: 'Hear now, ye sons of Levi: 9 is it but a small thing unto you, that the God of Israel hath separated you from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to Himself, to do the service of the tabernacle of the LORD, and to stand before the congregation to minister unto them; 10 and that He has brought thee near, and all thy brethren the sons of Levi with thee? and will ye seek the priesthood also?

He tries to convince them and rebuke them. This is where many return to their tents including the children of Korach who had nothing to lose. If their father won, they would be elevated and if they stayed home and Moshe won, they did not rebel.

11 Therefore thou and all thy company that are gathered together against the LORD--; and as to Aaron, what is he that ye murmur against him?' 12 And Moses sent to call Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; and they said: 'We will not come up; 13 is it a small thing that thou hast brought us up out of a land flowing with milk and honey, to kill us in the wilderness, but thou must needs make thyself also a prince over us? 14 Moreover thou hast not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us inheritance of fields and vineyards; wilt thou put out the eyes of these men? we will not come up.'

These are the true rebels. As per the Medrash these two wicked ones were in the fight where they accused Moshe of killing the Egyptian and squealing to the authorities. Now they were getting theirs for being a type that turns Jews over to the Goyim.

15 And Moses was very wroth, and said unto the LORD: 'Respect not Thou their offering; I have not taken one ass from them, neither have I hurt one of them.'

They blamed Moshe for the failure of the people to heed HASHEM into coming into Eretz Yisrael. Moshe knows this well and HASHEM Yisborach knows it better. This time after praying time and time (Egel HaZahav, Spies, etc.) to save the people this rebellion was the most bitter of them all. For a rebellion for lack of water can be quenched but one for power and lust could not.

16 And Moses said unto Korach: 'Be thou and all thy congregation before the LORD, thou, and they, and Aaron, to-morrow; … 19 And Korach assembled all the congregation against them unto the door of the tent of meeting; and the glory of the LORD appeared unto all the congregation.; 20 And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 21 'Separate yourselves from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' 22 And they fell upon their faces, and said: 'O God, the God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and wilt Thou be wroth with all the congregation?'

Yet again, Moshe and Aaron have to plea to save the Congregation.

23 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 24 'Speak unto the congregation, saying: Get you up from about the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram.' 25 And Moses rose up and went unto Dathan and Abiram; and the elders of Israel followed him. 26 And he spoke unto the congregation, saying: 'Depart, I pray you, from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing of theirs, lest ye be swept away in all their sins.'

The Congregation has been warned and I guess is pretty cautious after seeing previous happenings like the Egel, Slav (quails), Mireglim (spies) and other incidents so they decided that it was not worth getting involved in it. All this time On ben Peleg is more drunk than Lot so he will sleep through it all and be saved.

27 So they got them up from the dwelling of Korah, Dathan, and Abiram, on every side; and Dathan and Abiram came out, and stood at the door of their tents, with their wives, and their sons, and their little ones. 28 And Moses said: 'Hereby ye shall know that the LORD hath sent me to do all these works, and that I have not done them of mine own mind. 29 If these men die the common death of all men, and be visited after the visitation of all men, then the LORD hath not sent Me. 30 But if the LORD make a new thing, and the ground open her mouth, and swallow them up, with all that appertain unto them, and they go down alive into the pit, then ye shall understand that these men have despised the LORD.' 31 And it came to pass, as he made an end of speaking all these words, that the ground did cleave asunder that was under them. 32 And the earth opened her mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and all the men that appertained unto Korach, and all their goods. 33 So they, and all that appertained to them, went down alive into the pit; and the earth closed upon them, and they perished from among the assembly. 34 And all Israel that were round about them fled at the cry of them; for they said: 'Lest the earth swallow us up.' 35 And fire came forth from the LORD, and devoured the two hundred and fifty men that offered the incense.

It appears to be an earthquake with either lava or intense heat that fire came with it. Since with all our monitors and devices today, we cannot predict earthquakes or especially one in the midst of the camp of Yisrael, we can only draw the conclusion that this was a miracle and a one time event. This was the proof that they did not die a natural death and the earth opened her mouth before them.
17:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'Speak unto Eleazar the son of Aaron the priest, that he take up the fire-pans out of the burning, and scatter thou the fire yonder; for they are become holy; 3 even the fire-pans of these men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, and let them be made beaten plates for a covering of the altar--for they are become holy, because they were offered before the LORD--that they may be a sign unto the children of Israel.' 4 And Eleazar the priest took the brazen fire-pans, which they that were burnt had offered; and they beat them out for a covering of the altar, 5 to be a memorial unto the children of Israel, to the end that no common man, that is not of the seed of Aaron, draw near to burn incense before the LORD; that he fare not as Korach, and as his company; as the LORD spoke unto him by the hand of Moses.

This was to prevent a plague breaking out for their revolt.

6 But on the morrow all the congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and against Aaron, saying: 'Ye have killed the people of the LORD.' 7 And it came to pass, when the congregation was assembled against Moses and against Aaron, that they looked toward the tent of meeting; and, behold, the cloud covered it, and the glory of the LORD appeared. 8 And Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting.

You cannot please all these characters. I too have a small story to tell. I was on the Committee that opened up the Chashmonayim Yeshuv. I had in truth gotten the most votes but saw that a fellow named Yacov T. was more suited for running the Yeshuv both because of his knowledge and his Hebrew. I did not seek glory and gave it over to him. I worked on and had a small lobby with a number of Knesset Members for the Yeshuv as I was fighting for the Lavi Project too with 22,000 workers, families and 100,000 other workers my lobby was worth about 6-10 seats in the Knesset so I worked also upon Chashmonayim. P.A.G.I. Party located on Frishman Street in Tel Aviv with the help of Avi Frish Zal, who knew the Party Head, got me to arrange for a Sefer Torah for the Yeshuv. [Today the Sefer Torah is the second most widely used Torah in the Glenwood Schul as a newer one took its place after 29 or 30 years of being the main one.] Do you think I got anymore thanks than Moshe got for what I did? Hours of lost sleep, gasoline and energy were par for the course. Then came somebody, an American, who thought he could do better than Yacov and a few others on the Committee and the Israelis resigned. As a result for the last 30 years there has been no lobby, people are paying more for what we could have achieved. I am happy, I don’t have to work for the sake of heaven for an ungrateful bunch and I lost all interest in being elected. BUT MOSHE WAS APPOINTED BY HASHEM so he had to continue in his work.

9 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 10 'Get you up from among this congregation, that I may consume them in a moment.' And they fell upon their faces. 11 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Take thy fire-pan, and put fire therein from off the altar, and lay incense thereon, and carry it quickly unto the congregation, and make atonement for them; for there is wrath gone out from the LORD: the plague is begun.'

The revolt of Korach was bad but now the whole congregation is in danger from this new revolt.

12 And Aaron took as Moses spoke, and ran into the midst of the assembly; and, behold, the plague was begun among the people; and he put on the incense, and made atonement for the people. 13 And he stood between the dead and the living; and the plague was stayed. 14 Now they that died by the plague were fourteen thousand and seven hundred, besides them that died about the matter of Korach. 15 And Aaron returned unto Moses unto the door of the tent of meeting, and the plague was stayed.

The Angel of Death gave Moshe a present when he arrived in heaven to receive the Torah  that if a plague breaks out, the Cohain is to go with an incense pan and ward if off or ward off the Angel of Death.

16 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 17 'Speak unto the children of Israel, and take of them rods, one for each fathers' house, of all their princes according to their fathers' houses, twelve rods; thou shalt write every man's name upon his rod. 18 And thou shalt write Aaron's name upon the rod of Levi, for there shall be one rod for the head of their fathers' houses. 19 And thou shalt lay them up in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet with you. 20 And it shall come to pass, that the man whom I shall choose, his rod shall bud; and I will make to cease from Me the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they murmur against you.'

The rod would bud almond blossoms which normally occur in Shevat – Adar and it was well past that time of year.

21 And Moses spoke unto the children of Israel; and all their princes gave him rods, for each prince one, according to their fathers' houses, even twelve rods; and the rod of Aaron was among their rods. 22 And Moses laid up the rods before the LORD in the tent of the testimony. 23 And it came to pass on the morrow, that Moses went into the tent of the testimony; and, behold, the rod of Aaron for the house of Levi was budded, and put forth buds, and bloomed blossoms, and bore ripe almonds. 24 And Moses brought out all the rods from before the LORD unto all the children of Israel; and they looked, and took every man his rod. 25 And the LORD said unto Moses: 'Put back the rod of Aaron before the testimony, to be kept there, for a token against the rebellious children; that there may be made an end of their murmurings against Me, that they die not.' 26 Thus did Moses; as the LORD commanded him, so did he.

The staff is still in the Kodesh HaKadoshim to this day, albeit hidden from us, but with fresh almond blossoms.

27 And the children of Israel spoke unto Moses, saying: 'Behold, we perish, we are undone, we are all undone. 28 Every one that cometh near, that cometh near unto the tabernacle of the LORD, is to die; shall we wholly perish?'

They realized that they were wrong and repented and the rebellions on the previous scale would stop.

18:1 And the LORD said unto Aaron: 'Thou and thy sons and thy fathers' house with thee shall bear the iniquity of the sanctuary; and thou and thy sons with thee shall bear the iniquity of your priesthood. 2 And thy brethren also, the tribe of Levi, the tribe of thy father, bring thou near with thee, that they may be joined unto thee, and minister unto thee, thou and thy sons with thee being before the tent of the testimony. 3 And they shall keep thy charge, and the charge of all the Tent; only they shall not come nigh unto the holy furniture and unto the altar, that they die not, neither they, nor ye.

Only for the Cohanim aka Aaron and from now into the future.

15 Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh which they offer unto the LORD, both of man and beast, shall be thine; howbeit the first-born of man shalt thou surely redeem, and the firstling of unclean beasts shalt thou redeem. 16 And their redemption-money--from a month old shalt thou redeem them--shall be, according to thy valuation, five shekels of silver, after the shekel of the sanctuary--the same is twenty gerahs.

Each Shekel was between 96 to 100 grams of pure silver according to the modern Rabbis. So it would be about half a kilogram of silver $12.70 and ounce yesterday. 500 grams is somewhere between 16 and 17 normal ounces. This is approaching $210 to redeem an animal.

17 But the firstling of an ox, or the firstling of a sheep, or the firstling of a goat, thou shalt not redeem; they are holy: thou shalt dash their blood against the altar, and shalt make their fat smoke for an offering made by fire, for a sweet savor unto the LORD. … 21 And unto the children of Levi, behold, I have given all the tithe in Israel for an inheritance, in return for their service which they serve, even the service of the tent of meeting. 22 And henceforth the children of Israel shall not come nigh the tent of meeting, lest they bear sin, and die. … 24 For the tithe of the children of Israel, which they set apart as a gift unto the LORD, I have given to the Levites for an inheritance; therefore I have said unto them: Among the children of Israel they shall have no inheritance.'

Levi would get 24 cities in Israel and 2000 surrounding Amos in each direction.

25 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 26 'Moreover thou shalt speak unto the Levites, and say unto them: When ye take of the children of Israel the tithe which I have given you from them for your inheritance, then ye shall set apart of it a gift for the LORD, even a tithe of the tithe. … 30 Therefore thou shalt say unto them: When ye set apart the best thereof from it, then it shall be counted unto the Levites as the increase of the threshing-floor, and as the increase of the wine-press. 31 And ye may eat it in every place, ye and your households; for it is your reward in return for your service in the tent of meeting.

This is the reward of the tribe of Levi.

32 And ye shall bear no sin by reason of it, seeing that ye have set apart from it the best thereof; and ye shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, that ye die not.'

Kiddush HASHEM while patrolling the border.
By Rabbi Rachamim Pauli
Part 2

I came back refreshed from the day or two home. Now I was reassigned to Metulla and full night border patrol. It was summer and I was issued two sets of reserve uniforms. I was not prepared for cooler nights with fog and learned to bring the second shirt as a sweater in the wee hours of the morning.

When you are patrolling the border for 10 to 11 hours straight and an hour cleaning the path of foot prints before sunset, you begin to discuss things with your buddies. These Kibbutzniks had never met a very religious fellow before. They had questions similar to my questions some 11 years prior to Himmelstein when I debated him on my path to becoming a religious Jew. (See around Independence Day 5776 for the 50th anniversary stories of my return to Judaism. In the archives of the blogspot.)

At that time, Bnei Barak wanted to close off Kahaneman – HaShomer street. They wanted to close it off from wise guys on motor cycles most likely led by Aytan G. (see the stories of the Gulf war). The Charedim put a chain across the street to prevent entrance of vehicles on Shabbos. (Nowadays, only police barricades that can be circumvented by ambulances or security forces.) One of the wicked group rode his motorcycle full blast into the chain and the next world.

I had to explain politely to the Kibbutzniks who complained about the street closing that it was the fault of the man on the motorcycle. Why did he try to disturb the Shabbos rest of people that are 100% Shomer Shabbos? How would a pork growing Kibbutz feel if the Charedim invaded and burnt down their pig farming one night? Leave people to their own privacy!

One night after an exhausting day of the soldiers who patrolled fighting off the heat and flies while trying to sleep, the driver started dozing off. The commander took over the roll of driver and my co-guard fell asleep. I was going fast. I had to make a decision to stand and turn the hot lamp instead of squatting behind the thin armor or fall asleep. I put my body behind the hot spot of the lamp for the heat-seeking missile if fired to keep the guard duty going. Fortunately, for me there was no attack and 41 years later, I can write the tale for the first time.H

After finishing with Shabbos, I requested a special 24 or 36 hour leave because of family purity. I had to explain to the non-religious fellows about Taharos HaMishphacha. Although they did not really have any use for it from their standpoint, at least they learned something about Judaism and a religious family. I explained to them how it makes a husband and wife more fond of each other. I am now past that age and we need more hugs for our aches and pains at our age. Raising a 13 year-old boy now, I see the wisdom in the fact that a certain age one stops having children. [It should be noted that the Medrash states that Avraham prayed for signs of age because people confused him with Yitzchak. Of course, if I had the strength that I had at the age of 30 now, I would be very happy to raise a teen again instead of exhausted.] Back in 5737, I was a father of three ages 6, 4 and 3.

I got to go to the Good Fence and see real wounded or civilians in shock from the Lebanese side come and get medical attention. But one Motzei Shabbos, we had a real incident. The previous patrol from the Ramat Naphtali area further westward decided to practice throwing a live grenade at night. Instead of throwing a rock the commanded showed the fellow how to throw one from the vehicle. [This is forbidden without a doctor available and ambulance. It also has to be done uncertain circumstances and without obstacles.] The fellow pulled the pin from the grenade and his arm hit the projector or it hit something on the vehicle and fellow inside. To make matters worse the commander tried to find the grenade in the dark instead of everybody jumping out. As a result, one was dead and the other badly injured the driver may or may not have been injured and I think all the munitions started exploding. We had two doctors and seven paramedics on their way. I had border patrol in less than an hour and decided to man the fort. It was a good thing as the base got a call from the helicopter pilot and needed the medical staff. I informed him that two doctors and ground medics were on their way. I have no idea if this helped as before I knew it, I was off on border patrol with one rescue vehicle less.

Other nights we had to patrol the border from the Banias to Ramat Naphtali as a force was in Lebanon and we were the only rescue vehicle for miles outside of helicopters and civilian ambulances that could only go to the border.

There was one old lady called “Aunt Esther” who was 80. She was one of the original settlers of Metulla. She was either religious or traditional and would offer cakes and tea to the soldiers. A few years later, she received the Israel Prize and it was well deserved. I learned then about the first settlers of the Galil and the various hardships. Unfortunately, after all these years, my memory on the subject is vague.

The Colonel of the area or head of the Golani Brigade came to Metulla on Shabbos morning as we were finishing up our patrol. He came for ice for his family and him to tour the area but he was in uniform. I said to him “Sir Shabbat Shalom” and he saw me with my black Yarmulke and returned the greeting. He checked up on the patrol and then went on his way.

One night on patrol there was a full moon. (The projector could be seen for miles outlining where each vehicle on the border was.) The assistant Brigade Commander made a surprise inspection from above and behind our vehicle. The Lt. Colonel complained that I had not the right camouflage on my helmet. He balled out my commander and asked me a few questions. I told him that I was a paramedic on loan to the unit and was given this camouflage. He ordered the quartermaster to give me a better one immediately that 2 AM. I apologized to the store keeper and I told him that I was sorry that he had to be awakened he said it was ok and his job.

Sometimes I had some fun and walked into the National Park one day and with a driver got a ride to pick Sabras and visited a swimming spot with ice cold water that hot August Day. But this was a one or two time even. From my days on border patrol, I learned to be with my rifle at all times except for the swim. Years later, when I was patrolling something with the IAF the commander said that he had never seen such a fighting medic with a rifle ever ready. Something, I learned from Golani.

One thing that I did not know at the time was that I had lactose intolerance and on my way back to Metulla, in Afula, I bought a soft ice cream. I started feeling pain near Tiberias and could only get off in Kiriat Shemona. The doctor gave me tincture of opium so that I could go on border patrol that night. Afterwards, back in civilian fatigues a few years later, I was given a test and have refrained from lactose.

The night Rabbi Kahaneman went to Church.

WWII was over. There were many displaced persons and refugees. Rabbi Kahaneman heard that there were Jewish Orphans in a church. He went to the Priest and asked him politely if he could have the children. The Priest of course tried to deny that there were Jewish children there. He asked for his son. The Priest said you many have him if he is here. Rav Kahaneman then said to the boys “Shema Yisrael” they all jumped up and yelled TATI or Yiddish for father. He got the boys and brought them to Yisrael.

Cardinal Lustig was not so fortunate he stayed with the French Church. I met a woman, who must be about 80 to 90 today who had been a nun and had moved to Israel. Tragic souls lost not only physically but spiritually.

THE UMBRELLA - A TOUCHING STORY

On a rainy afternoon, a group of protesters were gathered outside the grocery store handing out pamphlets on the “evils” of America . I politely declined to take one.
There was an elderly woman behind me and a young (20-ish) female protester offered her a pamphlet, which she politely declined.
The young protester gently put her hand on the old woman's shoulder and in a patronizing voice said, "Don't you care about the children of Iraq ?"
The old woman looked up at her and said: "Honey, my father died in France during World War II, I lost my husband in Korea , and a son in Vietnam .  All three died so a naive, ignorant, self-centered bimbo like you could have the right to stand here and badmouth our country, and if you touch me again, I'll shove this umbrella up your rear and open it."
