Parsha Pekudei
Last week's Parsha and Terumah were
similar the difference being the theoretical building of the Aron, Shulchan,
Mizbayach, etc. vs. the practical. Our Parsha is similar to Tetzaveh and the
garments, jewels and inscriptions. The later is in theory and our Parsha is the
actual sewing, twinning, etc. of the garments. In addition, each Parsha has new
Mitzvos to follow. Our Parsha ends with an assembled Mishkan that has to be
sanctified.
38:21 These are the accounts of the
tabernacle, even the tabernacle of the testimony, as they were rendered
according to the commandment of Moses, through the service of the Levites, by
the hand of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. 22 And Bezalel the
son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD
commanded Moses. 23 And with him was Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach,
of the tribe of Dan, a craftsman, and a skillful workman, and a weaver in
colors, in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen.
In Vayikra, Parsha Kedoshim,
Chapter 19:36 we are told Ephod Tzedek Hin Tzedek for proper measurements.
Avraham did not want booty for liberating Lot lest people say "I made
Avraham rich". Moshe says that he did not take as much as a shoe lace for
his work. The Torah teaches here and also the accounting of the princes in
Parsha Naso that a proper accounting for donation should be done.
24 All the gold that was used for the work
in all the work of the sanctuary, even the gold of the offering, was twenty and
nine talents, and seven hundred and thirty shekels, after the shekel of the
sanctuary.
This is a large amount by any
standard. Each Talent was 75 lbs. or about 35 kg. Each Shekel was .4 oz. or
11.3 grams.
25 And the silver of them that were numbered
of the congregation was a hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and
three-score and fifteen shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary:
The reason why shekels were not
converted into talents as 3000 shekels made one talent.
26 a beka a head, that is, half a shekel,
after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that passed over to them that
are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and
three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.
This is the census of men 20 – 60
years old.
27 And the hundred talents of silver were
for casting the sockets of the sanctuary, and the sockets of the veil: a
hundred sockets for the hundred talents, a talent for a socket.
The sockets of the Holy: [I.e., the sockets] of the planks of the Mishkan, which were
forty-eight planks, which had ninety-six sockets, in addition to the four
sockets of the dividing curtain, equaling one hundred [were silver]. But for
all the rest of the sockets, the Torah prescribed that they be made of copper.
28 And of the thousand seven hundred seventy
and five shekels he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their capitals,
and made fillets for them.
And he covered their tops: [i.e., the tops] of the pillars with them [i.e., with the
remaining shekels], for concerning all of them, it is written: “And he covered
their tops, and their bands were silver.”
29 And the brass of the offering was seventy
talents and two thousand and four hundred shekels. 30 And therewith
he made the sockets to the door of the tent of meeting, and the brazen altar,
and the brazen grating for it, and all the vessels of the altar,
Here too even with less expensive
brass needs accounting for the law of one Peruta (small coin) is the same from
for accounting like the more valuable metals. Din Peruta has the Din of a 100.
31 and the sockets of the court round about,
and the sockets of the gate of the court, and all the pins of the tabernacle,
and all the pins of the court round about.
The accounting continued to even
the very least valuable items such as the pins for Din Peruta (smallest coin), Ki-Din
Meah like that of a hundred. It is like Boeing charging Israel Aircraft
Industries $8507.59 for a discounted wing part. (A bill I saw with my own eyes –

39:1 And of the blue, and purple, and scarlet, they
made plaited garments, for ministering in the holy place, and made the holy
garments for Aaron, as the LORD commanded Moses.

the checkered work of the scarlet and blue on the Cohain Gadol.
2 And he made the ephod of
gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen. 3 And
they did beat the gold into thin plates, and cut it into threads, to work it in
the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, the
work of the skillful workman. 4 They made shoulder-pieces for it,
joined together; at the two ends was it joined together. 5 And the
skillfully woven band, that was upon it, wherewith to gird it on, was of the
same piece and like the work thereof: of gold, of blue, and purple, and
scarlet, and fine twined linen, as the LORD commanded Moses.
Hundreds of people donated and they
expected that their donation will be mentioned whether a child giving a thread
and somebody giving a lot of expensive dye or linen.
6 And they wrought the onyx
stones, inclosed in settings of gold, graven with the engravings of a signet,
according to the names of the children of Israel. 7 And he put them
on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, to be stones of memorial for the children
of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses.
Every detail had to be mentioned.
8 And he made the breastplate,
the work of the skillful workman, like the work of the ephod: of gold, of blue,
and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen. 9 It was four-square;
they made the breastplate double; a span was the length thereof, and a span the
breadth thereof, being double. 10 And they set in it four rows of
stones: a row of carnelian, topaz, and smaragd was the first
row. 11 And the second row, a carbuncle, a sapphire, and an
emerald. 12 And the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an
amethyst. 13 And the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper; they
were inclosed in fittings of gold in their settings. 14 And the
stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according
to their names, like the engravings of a signet, every one according to his
name, for the twelve tribes. 15 And they made upon the breastplate
plaited chains, of wreathen work of pure gold. 16 And they made two
settings of gold, and two gold rings; and put the two rings on the two ends of
the breastplate. 17 And they put the two wreathen chains of gold on
the two rings at the ends of the breastplate. 18 And the other two
ends of the two wreathen chains they put on the two settings, and put them on
the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, in the forepart thereof. 19 And
they made two rings of gold, and put them upon the two ends of the breastplate,
upon the edge thereof, which was toward the side of the ephod
inward. 20 And they made two rings of gold, and put them on the two
shoulder-pieces of the ephod underneath, in the forepart thereof, close by the
coupling thereof, above the skillfully woven band of the
ephod. 21 And they did bind the breastplate by the rings thereof unto
the rings of the ephod with a thread of blue, that it might be upon the skillfully
woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate might not be loosed from the
ephod; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Any person or group of people
expect that their donations be mentioned. Each stone might have been a donation
of a hundred or thousand people from one tribe.
22 And he made the robe of the
ephod of woven work, all of blue; 23 and the hole of the robe in the
midst thereof, as the hole of a coat of mail, with a binding round about the
hole of it, that it should not be rent. 24 And they made upon the
skirts of the robe pomegranates of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and twined
linen. 25 And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between
the pomegranates upon the skirts of the robe round about, between the
pomegranates: 26 a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate,
upon the skirts of the robe round about, to minister in; as the LORD commanded
Moses.
Bells don't grow on trees or sheep
and had to be made and equal.
27 And they made the tunics of
fine linen of woven work for Aaron, and for his sons, 28 and the
mitre of fine linen, and the goodly head-tires of fine linen, and the linen
breeches of fine twined linen, 29 and the girdle of fine twined
linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, the work of the weaver in colors; as
the LORD commanded Moses. 30 And they made the plate of the holy
crown of pure gold, and wrote upon it a writing, like the engravings of a
signet: HOLY TO THE LORD.
This the Mitznefes or Mitre of the
Cohain Gadol and for this reason when the Cohanim bless they do not place their
hands higher than their forehead.
31 And they tied unto it a
thread of blue, to fasten it upon the mitre above; as the LORD commanded
Moses. 32 Thus was finished all the work of the tabernacle of the
tent of meeting; and the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD
commanded Moses, so did they.
The Bnei Yisrael did as commanded
and through prophecy the work.
33 And they brought the
tabernacle unto Moses, the Tent, and all its furniture, its clasps, its boards,
its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets; 34 and the covering of
rams' skins dyed red, and the covering of giraffe skins,
and the veil of the screen; 35 the ark of the testimony, and the
staves thereof, and the ark-cover; 36 the table, all the vessels
thereof, and the showbread; 37 the pure candlestick, the lamps
thereof, even the lamps to be set in order, and all the vessels thereof, and
the oil for the light; 38 and the golden altar, and the anointing
oil, and the sweet incense, and the screen for the door of the
Tent; 39 the brazen altar, and its grating of brass, its staves, and
all its vessels, the laver and its base; 40 the hangings of the
court, its pillars, and its sockets, and the screen for the gate of the court,
the cords thereof, and the pins thereof, and all the instruments of the service
of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting; 41 the plaited garments for
ministering in the holy place; the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the
garments of his sons, to minister in the priest's
office. 42 According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so the
children of Israel did all the work. 43 And Moses saw all the work,
and, behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, even so had they done
it. And Moses blessed them.
The Mishkan was ready to be assembled,
dedicated and all the workers and donators received Moshe's blessing.
40: 1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses,
saying: 2 'On the first day of the first month shalt thou rear up the
tabernacle of the tent of meeting.
The dedication and assembly shall
take place on the first of Nissan.
3 And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and
thou shalt screen the ark with the veil. 4 And thou shalt bring in
the table, and set in order the bread that is upon it; and thou shalt bring in
the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof. 5 And thou shalt set
the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the
screen of the door to the tabernacle. 6 And thou shalt set the altar
of burnt-offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of
meeting. 7 And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of meeting
and the altar, and shalt put water therein. 8 And thou shalt set up
the court round about, and hang up the screen of the gate of the
court. 9 And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the
tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the furniture
thereof; and it shall be holy. 10 And thou shalt anoint the altar of
burnt-offering, and all its vessels, and sanctify the altar; and the altar
shall be most holy. 11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and its base,
and sanctify it. 12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the
door of the tent of meeting, and shalt wash them with water. 13 And thou
shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments; and thou shalt anoint him, and sanctify
him, that he may minister unto Me in the priest's office. 14 And thou
shalt bring his sons, and put tunics upon them. 15 And thou shalt
anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto Me
in the priest's office; and their anointing shall be to them for an everlasting
priesthood throughout their generations.' 16 Thus did Moses;
according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.
Moshe supervised the Leviim for the
first assemblage of the Mishkan. He also sanctified the Cohanim.
17 And it came to pass in the first month in the second year,
on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared
up. 18 And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and laid its sockets, and
set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up its
pillars. 19 And he spread the tent over the tabernacle, and put the
covering of the tent above upon it; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Each side was raised joined together
and bolted at the ends. Now it could stand by itself.
20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set
the staves on the ark, and put the ark-cover above upon the
ark. 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the
veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony; as the LORD
commanded Moses.
Up until the assemble everything
mentioned was in theory including the places for the Aron, Shulchan with the
bread and everything else.
22 And he put the table in the tent of meeting, upon the side
of the tabernacle northward, without the veil. 23 And he set a row of
bread in order upon it before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses. 24 And
he put the candlestick in the tent of meeting, over against the table, on the
side of the tabernacle southward. 25 And he lighted the lamps before
the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.
Now at long last, the Menorah was
burning of.
26 And he put the golden altar in the tent of meeting before
the veil; 27 and he burnt thereon incense of sweet spices; as the
LORD commanded Moses.
Suddenly the incense and other
Mizbayach were functioning.
28 And he put the screen of the door to the
tabernacle. 29 And the altar of burnt-offering he set at the door of
the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered upon it the burnt-offering
and the meal-offering; as the LORD commanded Moses. 30 And he set the
laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water therein, wherewith
to wash; 31 that Moses and Aaron and his sons might wash their hands
and their feet thereat; 32 when they went into the tent of meeting,
and when they came near unto the altar, they should wash; as the LORD commanded
Moses. 33 And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and
the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So Moses finished
the work.
On the 1st of Nissan everything
was ready and constructed. The Mizbayach started operating and only in Sefer
Bamidbar, Naso will we see the Nassim and the dedication of each tribe.
34 Then the cloud covered the
tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the
tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of
meeting, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the
tabernacle.-- 36 And whenever the cloud was taken up from over the
tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys. 37 But
if the cloud was not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was
taken up. 38 For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by
day, and there was fire therein by night, in the sight of all the house of
Israel, throughout all their journeys.
The journeys would only start in
Sefer Bamidbar but the time zone is only a few weeks from our Parsha through
Parsha Shelach Lecha.

Chaiya E: Ukrainians return from abroad to fight
Russian invasion. While hundreds of thousands of refugees are leaving
Ukraine amid Russia's attack on the country, some Ukrainian men and women are
returning home from across Europe to help defend their homeland.
Poland’s Border Guard said Sunday that
some 22,000 people have crossed into Ukraine since Thursday, when Russia
invaded the country. At the checkpoint in Medyka, in
southeastern Poland, many were
standing in a line early Sunday to cross into Ukraine.
"We have to defend our homeland. Who else if not us,”
said a mustachioed man in front of a group of some 20 Ukrainian truck drivers
walking to the checkpoint to enter Ukraine. They came from across Europe to
return to Ukraine. They spoke to The Associated Press in Ukrainian and in
Russian.
Another man in the group said: “The Russians should be
afraid. We are not afraid." Members
of the group declined to give their names, or only gave their first names,
citing their security and that of their families.
Denis, 28, who has spent six months working at construction
sites in Poland, said he was returning to Ukraine where his “everything” is. “I’m on my own here in Poland. Why should I be here? So I go,
for the homeland,” said Denis, with a small Ukrainian blue-and-yellow national
flag on his winter jacket. "I want to
go back to join the army, to fight. We will see, we hope we will win. I want to
go back, that’s all,“ he said.
Before the recent exodus, there were an estimated 1 million
Ukrainians in Poland, working or studying. Lesa, 36, from Lviv, spoke to the AP just before entering the
checkpoint building, following her brother into Ukraine. ”I am afraid, but I am a mother and want to be with my
children. What can you do? It’s scary but I have to," she said.
Another young woman, Alina, said she was returning to take
her children out of Ukraine. “We have
to, we Ukrainians have to take our children away ... to allow our boys to
fight,” she said. On Ukraine’s side of the border, a man was
directing those arriving to a place where cars and buses were waiting to take
them onward.
The Czech Republic, which borders Poland to the southwest, is
planning to support Ukrainian families living in the country whose men decide
to return home to fight.
The Ministry of Labor and Social Affairs is preparing bonuses
to families who would lose income if “the men need to join the (Ukrainian)
army,” Minister Marian Jurecka said. There are
about 200,000 Ukrainian workers in the Czech Republic, the majority of them
men.
Czech railways say Ukrainian men traveling back to Ukraine
can take any train free of charge. They need to travel through Poland or
Slovakia to reach Ukraine.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has stayed in the
capital, Kyiv, boosting the morale of Ukrainian fighters as Russian troops were
closing in on the city and huge explosions lit up the sky early Sunday.
Zelensky has banned men of military age, 18 to 60, from leaving the country.
Ukrainian authorities have also called on foreign volunteers to come and fight
in Ukraine's defense.
At least 368,000 people have fled Ukraine into Poland and
other neighboring countries in the wake of the Russian invasion, the U.N.
refugee agency, the UNHCR, said Sunday.
Poland's border Guard said some 156,000 people have entered
from Ukraine since Thursday, when the invasion started, while some 22,000 have
gone in the opposite direction.

I was 14 years old when Yevtushenko's
work Babi Yar was published and popularized. I have since read accounts of the
massacre, from Western encyclopedias to all sorts of historic analyses. What
strikes me about the event, is that, while it was under German Nazi orders and
Military direction, it could not have happened without the more than
enthusiastic collaboration of the citizens of Kyiv. They found the victims,
pulled them from their homes, put them in trucks and marched those who went on
foot, to be murdered. They, not German soldiers whose numbers were so small
that they were supplemented by Romanian Nazi volunteers, tried to hide what
they did after the fact. And Babi Yar was not unique in Ukraine. Soon after the
event was repeated in Odessa where close to twice the victims were murdered. I
have heard Ukrainians saw that when Ukraine sided with the Nazis, they did so
to throw off the yoke of Russian (Soviet) domination, and that may have a grain
of truth to it. But that does not explain or excuse what they did to Ukrainian
Jews. The story needs to be told.
