Parsha Vayikra

Another name for Sefer Vayikra is Toras Cohanim. For this Sefer has a tremendous amount of writing about the holiness of the Cohanim, Korbanos and what relationships are permitted and forbidden.

1:1  And the LORD called unto Moses, and spoke unto him out of the tent of meeting, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: When any man of you bring an offering unto the LORD, ye shall bring your offering of the cattle, even of the herd or of the flock.

A regular Korban comes from cattle, sheep or goats. There are some exceptions of a woman who gave birth with a male or female pigeon or the dirt poor person with an offering from flour.

3 If his offering be a burnt-offering of the herd, he shall offer it a male without blemish; he shall bring it to the door of the tent of meeting, that he may be accepted before the LORD.

Without blemish means not inferior quality but that of one of the best of the bulls. It shall be male for the Korban Oleh as it shall be turned into smoke a sweet smelling offering before the L-RD.

4 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the burnt-offering; and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him.

The Semicha of the hands on the Korban makes it his or replacing him as a sacrifice that he may live.

5 And he shall ritually slaughter the bullock before the LORD; and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall present the blood, and dash the blood roundabout against the altar that is at the door of the tent of meeting.

The blood of the Korban is the vitality of life and makes him a representative of the individual.

6 And he shall flay the burnt-offering, and cut it into its pieces.

Like any Korban he shall flay and cut the burnt offering into pieces.

7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire upon the altar, and lay wood in order upon the fire. 8 And Aaron's sons, the priests, shall lay the pieces, and the head, and the suet, in order upon the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar; 9 but its inwards and its legs shall he wash with water; and the priest shall make the whole smoke on the altar, for a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

Even though it is a Korban Olah, the pieces are arranged as if it were to be eaten – as if G-D needs food but symbolically that the atonement is accepted.

10 And if his offering be of the flock, whether of the sheep, or of the goats, for a burnt-offering, he shall offer it a male without blemish.

For the L-RD the Korbanos have to be from the best of the sheep or goats, that are fatter, stronger, good looking and all over healthy.

11 And he shall ritually slaughter it on the side of the altar northward before the LORD; and Aaron's sons, the priests, shall dash its blood against the altar roundabout. The Chabad translation is better. And he shall slaughter it on the northern side of the altar, before the Lord. And Aaron's descendants, the kohanim, shall dash its blood upon the altar, around.

The 1917 Hebrew Translation is based on the King James Bible but with a Jewish proper twist that is why we get kill instead of slaughter. As for Chapter and Verse, a Priest did it so often it has no relation with a Jewish Pasuk break and sometimes is done to stop the reading at a Christian Point.

12 And he shall cut it into its pieces; and the priest shall lay them, with its head and its suet, in order on the wood that is on the fire which is upon the altar. 13 But the inwards and the legs shall he wash with water; and the priest shall offer the whole, and make it smoke upon the altar; it is a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

Similar to the cattle brought by a congregation or a rich person, the average person brings a goat or a sheep.

14 And if his offering to the LORD be a burnt-offering of fowls, then he shall bring his offering of turtle-doves, or of young pigeons. 15 And the priest shall bring it unto the altar, and pinch off its head, and make it smoke on the altar; and the blood thereof shall be drained out on the side of the altar.

A very poor man or a woman after childbirth brings pigeons. The pigeon is slaughtered with a sharp thumbnail and the act is called Maleeka.

16 And he shall take away its crop with the feathers thereof, and cast it beside the altar on the east part, in the place of the ashes.

So everything burns.

17 And he shall rend it by the wings thereof, but shall not divide it asunder; and the priest shall make it smoke upon the altar, upon the wood that is upon the fire; it is a burnt-offering, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD. 2:1 And when any one brings a meal-offering unto the LORD, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil upon it, and put frankincense thereon.

The poorest person who is just above the soup kitchen.

2 And he shall bring it to Aaron's sons the priests; and he shall take thereout his handful of the fine flour thereof, and of the oil thereof, together with all the frankincense thereof; and the priest shall make the memorial-part thereof smoke upon the altar, an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

The amount of flour is that which fits into 3 bent over middle fingers worth of flour. The act of doing this and with the other fingers removing excess flour is called Kamitza.

3 But that which is left of the meal-offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'; it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire.

The Cohanim have free use in holiness of the remaining flour.

4 And when thou bring a meal-offering baked in the oven, it shall be unleavened cakes of fine flour mingled with oil, or unleavened wafers spread with oil.

5 And if thy offering be a meal-offering baked on a griddle, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mingled with oil. 6 Thou shalt break it in pieces, and pour oil thereon; it is a meal-offering.

7 And if thy offering be a meal-offering of the stewing-pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. 8 And thou shalt bring the meal-offering that is made of these things unto the LORD; and it shall be presented unto the priest, and he shall bring it unto the altar. 9 And the priest shall take off from the meal-offering the memorial-part thereof, and shall make it smoke upon the altar--an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD. 10 But that which is left of the meal-offering shall be Aaron's and his sons'; it is a thing most holy of the offerings of the LORD made by fire. 11 No meal-offering, which ye shall bring unto the LORD, shall be made with leaven; for ye shall make no leaven, nor any honey, smoke as an offering made by fire unto the LORD. 12 As an offering of first-fruits ye may bring them unto the LORD; but they shall not come up for a sweet savor on the altar. 13 And every meal-offering of thine shalt thou season with salt; neither shalt thou suffer the salt of the covenant of thy God to be lacking from thy meal-offering; with all thy offerings thou shalt offer salt.

14 And if thou bring a meal-offering of first-fruits unto the LORD, thou shalt bring for the meal-offering of thy first-fruits corn in the ear parched with fire, even groats of the fresh ear. 15 And thou shalt put oil upon it, and lay frankincense thereon; it is a meal-offering. 16 And the priest shall make the memorial-part of it smoke, even of the groats thereof, and of the oil thereof, with all the frankincense thereof; it is an offering made by fire unto the LORD.

3:1 And if his offering be a sacrifice of peace-offerings: if he offer of the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without blemish before the LORD. 2 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and slaughter it at the door of the tent of meeting; and Aaron's sons the priests shall dash the blood against the altar round about. 3 And he shall present of the sacrifice of peace-offerings an offering made by fire unto the LORD: the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, 4 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take away hard by the kidneys. 5 And Aaron's sons shall make it smoke on the altar upon the burnt-offering, which is upon the wood that is on the fire; it is an offering made by fire, of a sweet savor unto the LORD.

The Korban Shlomim is called a peace-offering it can be a Korban Pesach, a thanksgiving Korban after crossing the sea or desert which we bench Gomel prayer today. All the Korbanos like the Chatas for sins with Kares or death penalties such as forgetting it was Shabbos or Yom Tov or being married to a woman let us call her X123 and the man has an aunt or sister called 123 and in the night whispers X123 I love you and in the morning finds out that there was an accidental horrible mistake. Also Asham or guilt and Asham Talouie guilt with conditions.

Rabbi B. Wein copywrite 2020 at the Torah.org writes:

A call for Human Sacrifice by Rabbi Beryl Wein

One of the categories of sacrifices that are described in this week's Torah reading describes the offerings that are meant to bring about forgiveness for sins that one committed inadvertently. The Torah details for us how the sacrifice was to be brought, and what its effects regarding forgiveness from Heaven would then occur.

Even though we live in a time when such animal sacrifices are not possible, one of the main lessons which is pertinent to us is that all forgiveness for wrongdoing requires true "sacrifice" on the part of the perpetrator of the sin. There is no free lunch involved here. The ability to request forgiveness for wrongdoing is completely contingent upon the true contrite feelings of the sinner.

And in our time, being remorseful can be expressed by one's willingness to sacrifice one's own time, wealth, abilities, and even social standing, to achieve the forgiveness so necessary for spiritual and physical survival. In many ways, we are accustomed to sacrifice to achieve goals that we have set for ourselves. We are willing to sacrifice much of our youth and its pleasures, in the hope that we will survive and live comfortably and nicely in our later years. We restrain ourselves, no matter how strong our desires may be, in the hope and belief that this will somehow bring us to a better future. We understand fully that without sacrifice, it is useless to expect forgiveness. And since human beings are, by their nature, imperfect, we are engaged in a continual process of sacrifice and self-restraint.

Rabbi Moshe ben Maimon – Rambam - expresses the idea that the sacrifice of an animal on the altar of the Temple should engender in the mind of the sinner who brought forth the sacrifice that the sinner himself or herself should be brought on the altar. The animal being sacrificed is to be seen merely as a substitute for one's own self in attempting to redress past wrongs and trying to engender heavenly forgiveness for transgressions and sins.

Even though we no longer can bring such animal sacrifices on the altar of the Temple, we, nevertheless, can perceive ourselves as being the necessary sacrifice to accomplish our atonement and forgiveness. And this can only be accomplished through regret for the past misdeeds and the stronger permanent commitment of restraint over our future actions and behavior.

It is this deep understanding that we ourselves are the sacrifice that can bring us to a true attainment of forgiveness, in terms of heavenly judgment. In so doing, no detail of our behavior and actions can be considered insignificant or unimportant.

Just as the animal sacrifice cannot contain any blemish or imperfection, so, too, the mental, spiritual, and physical sacrifice entailed in obtaining forgiveness for our sins must be, as far as humanly possible, free from blemish and imperfection. This is a lofty goal to achieve, but it is the only sure path to goodness in life in this world and to the achievement of eternity in the Next World.

6 And if his offering for a sacrifice of peace-offerings unto the LORD be of the flock, male or female, he shall offer it without blemish. 7 If he bring a lamb for his offering, then shall he present it before the LORD. 8 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of his offering, and kill it before the tent of meeting; and Aaron's sons shall dash the blood thereof against the altar round about. 9 And he shall present of the sacrifice of peace-offerings an offering made by fire unto the LORD: the fat thereof, the fat tail entire, which he shall take away hard by the rump-bone; and the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, 10 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take away by the kidneys. 11 And the priest shall make it smoke upon the altar; it is the food of the offering made by fire unto the LORD.

Of course the L-RD has no need to eat but likes a nice gesture.

12 And if his offering be a goat, then he shall present it before the LORD. 13 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of it, and kill it before the tent of meeting; and the sons of Aaron shall dash the blood thereof against the altar round about. 14 And he shall present thereof his offering, even an offering made by fire unto the LORD: the fat that covers the inwards, and all the fat that is upon the inwards, 15 and the two kidneys, and the fat that is upon them, which is by the loins, and the lobe above the liver, which he shall take away by the kidneys. 16 And the priest shall make them smoke upon the altar; it is the food of the offering made by fire, for a sweet savor; all the fat is the LORD'S. 17 It shall be a perpetual statute throughout your generations in all your dwellings, that ye shall eat neither fat nor blood.

No blood in meat, blood spots in eggs but fish blood is considered like juice.

The following is sinning through error like accidently doing work on Shabbos or forgetting it was Shabbos. 4:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If any one shall sin through error, in any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and shall do any one of them: 3 if the anointed priest shall sin so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer for his sin, which he hath sinned, a young bullock without blemish unto the LORD for a sin-offering. 4 And he shall bring the bullock unto the door of the tent of meeting before the LORD; and he shall lay his hand upon the head of the bullock, and kill the bullock before the LORD.

… 13 And if the whole congregation of Israel shall err, the thing being hid from the eyes of the assembly, and do any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and are guilty:

This happens when the local people forget or even the Sanhedrin error in Halacha. The Gemara in Shabbos first chapter asks about carrying a knife to slaughter an animals on Shabbos. Hillel and Shammai did not remember how to carry the slaughter knives on Shabbos to slaughter the Korban Pesach. They saw the people hiding the knives within the wool of the sheep or goats. Finally two weavers testified in the names of Shemaya and Avtallion, that hiding the knife in the wool was Halacha.

14 when the sin wherein they have sinned is known, then the assembly shall offer a young bullock for a sin-offering, and bring it before the tent of meeting. 15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands upon the head of the bullock before the LORD; and the bullock shall be killed before the LORD. … 22 When a ruler sins, and doeth through error any one of all the things which the LORD his God hath commanded not to be done, and is guilty:

The King is special and has different and he is the Shaliach for the whole nation so the eyes are upon him.

23 if his sin, wherein he hath sinned, be known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a male without blemish. 24 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burnt-offering before the LORD; it is a sin-offering. 25 And the priest shall take of the blood of the sin-offering with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering, and the remaining blood thereof shall he pour out at the base of the altar of burnt-offering. 26 And all the fat thereof shall he make smoke upon the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make atonement for him as concerning his sin, and he shall be forgiven. 27 And if any one of the common people sin through error, in doing any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, and be guilty: 28 if his sin, which he hath sinned, be known to him, then he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he hath sinned. 29 And he shall lay his hand upon the head of the sin-offering, and kill the sin-offering in the place of burnt-offering. 30 And the priest shall take of the blood thereof with his finger, and put it upon the horns of the altar of burnt-offering, and all the remaining blood thereof shall he pour out at the base of the altar. 31 And all the fat thereof shall he take away, as the fat is taken away from off the sacrifice of peace-offerings; and the priest shall make it smoke upon the altar for a sweet savor unto the LORD; and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven. 5:17 And if any one sin, and do any of the things which the LORD hath commanded not to be done, though he know it not, yet is he guilty, and shall bear his iniquity. 18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation, for a guilt-offering, unto the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning the error which he committed, though he knew it not, and he shall be forgiven. 19 It is a guilt-offering--he is certainly guilty before the LORD.

Now below we have a different type of guilt as above it was accidently either with a congregation or ruler misunderstanding a Halacha. However, trespass on holy objects or items or stealing is not in usual in error. Although one could think that the Holy was Chullin or the stolen item lost in certain cases but in most cases not.

20 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 21 If any one sin, and commit a trespass against the LORD, and deal falsely with his neighbor in a matter of deposit, or of pledge, or of robbery, or have oppressed his neighbor; 22 or have found that which was lost, and deal falsely therein, and swear to a lie; in any of all these that a man doeth, sinning therein; 23 then it shall be, if he hath sinned, and is guilty, that he shall restore that which he took by robbery, or the thing which he hath gotten by oppression, or the deposit which was deposited with him, or the lost thing which he found, 24 or anything about which he hath sworn falsely, he shall even restore it in full, and shall add the fifth part more thereto; unto him to whom it appertains shall he give it, in the day of his being guilty. 25 And he shall bring his forfeit unto the LORD, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to thy valuation, for a guilt-offering, unto the priest. 26 And the priest shall make atonement for him before the LORD, and he shall be forgiven, concerning whatsoever he doeth so as to be guilty thereby.

Leading 100 Jews out of the Ukraine. By Dr. Yvette Alt Miller.

https://aish.com/leading-100-jews-out-of-ukraine/

I’m in Belarus,” explains Rabbi Nisan Podolsky, just days after escaping from war-ravaged Ukraine. “We’re still working on getting more people out. We’re not resting here.”

In an Aish.com interview, Rabbi Podolsky recounted the harrowing trip he and a hundred other Jews made last Shabbat as they escaped from Ukraine.

Born in Jerusalem, Rabbi Podolsky is a member of the Karlin-Stolin Hasidic group that was founded in the 1700s in present-day Belarus. Known for their piety, hospitality, and devotion in prayer, these Hasidic Jews live in Israel and around the world, while Rabbi Boruch Meir Yaakov Shochet, their rebbe, resides in Jerusalem. In the years since the end of Communism, some Jews in Belarus and Ukraine have revived the region’s once-vibrant community.

In Kyiv, they have flourished. “We have shuls, schools, and a dormitory yeshiva,” Rabbi Podolsky explains. Rabbi Podolsky lived in Kyiv with his wife Shevy and their six children; the youngest two are 10-week-old twin girls. They joined over a hundred other Karlin-Stolin Jews in Kyiv, including 50 students in the community’s schools. Other Jews would “pop in once in a while to community events to feel a Jewish connection.”

As Russia built up its troops along Ukraine’s borders throughout February, many Ukrainians refused to believe their neighbor would actually invade. Residents in Kyiv, the capital, knew they would be the prime target of any invasion, but the thought that their country would actually come under attack seemed impossible.

In Jerusalem, Rabbi Shochet took the threat of a Russian invasion seriously. He sent an urgent message to Rabbi Podolsky telling him that he and his whole community must leave Kyiv immediately.

At the time, people were looking at us like we were crazy,” Rabbi Podolsky recalls. Their neighbors asked, “Why are you leaving the city? It looks okay.” Undaunted, Rabbi Podolsky and hundred other Karlin-Stolin Jews moved from Kyiv to the small village of Medzhybizh in Ukraine where they thought they wouldn’t be a prime target.

Medzhybizh is more west than Kyiv and smaller, so it felt safer,” Rabbi Podolsky notes. Medzhybizh is the birthplace of the Baal Shem Tov, (c1699-1760), the founder of the Hasidic movement. For that reason, many Jewish tourists visit the town. “We rented out the big kosher hotel that’s there for the Jewish tourists who come.”

For two weeks, he and his congregants – students, adults and entire families – waited to see if Russia would invade. Local residents thought the group of Jews awaiting an invasion seemed crazy.

On Thursday, February 24, the invasion began. “I woke up very early that morning,” Rabbi Podolsky recalls. “I checked the news and heard that President Putin was giving a speech. I knew something was going to happen. At 6 AM I went outside and saw planes flying overhead and heard explosions in the distance.” He knew that remaining in Ukraine – even in a small town like Mezhyrich – was no longer safe.

We started to think about our options.” The group had several cars with them, but not enough to take everyone to safety. They chartered a bus with a driver, but instead of reporting for work, the driver raced to check on his own family once the invasion began. The Jews in Medzhybizh were stranded.

Friday came and amid the ongoing war, Rabbi Podolsky started making plans for Shabbat. “The roads were all blocked; there were checkpoints.” It seemed their driver would never return. The driver finally returned and Rabbi Podolsky knew they had to leave immediately. Driving or traveling in a bus on Shabbat is prohibited but when human life is at stake, it’s permissible. After double-checking with another rabbi that this was indeed a matter of life and death, Rabbi Podolsky urged his congregants to get onto the bus. “We left half an hour after candle lighting… we had a whole convoy of the bus and cars.”

The trip was harrowing. They stopped at checkpoints and shared the roads with tanks and cannons. In the distance they heard shooting. “It was really scary; we were in the middle of a war,” Rabbi Podolsky recalls. The terrified Jews recited the Shabbat evening prayers on the bus that was their only hope for freedom, welcoming in Shabbat and making Kiddush.

They headed to Belarus. “It sounded crazy because everyone was trying to drive to the European Union,” Rabbi Podolsky recalls. Belarus is closely allied with Russia: they speculated that the guards on the Belarusian border might not be expecting refugees and would let them through, but they couldn’t be sure. “When our convoy finally arrived at the Belarusian border at 2 AM, the guards opened the gates for us. We were finally safe.” Hours later, the Belarus border was closed.

Local Jews had reserved hotel rooms near the border and supplied them with Shabbat food, challah and wine. It was an emotional moment. One member of the group recited the Jewish prayer of thanksgiving, said after experiencing a narrow, life-saving escape, and the entire congregation responded with a heartfelt Amen.

This group of Jews has moved on to the Belarusian city of Pinsk, where the local Karlin-Stolin community is putting them up. Rabbi Podolsky is continuing to bring more Jews out of Ukraine. “I got four buses out today to Moldova,” he said during an Aish.com interview on Wednesday, March 2. “We’re still bringing people out of Kyiv – I’m on the phone right now with an elderly lady trying to convince her that it will be okay, that the journey will be okay.” Even with Kyiv and other key Ukrainian cities coming under siege by Russian forces, Rabbi Podolsky refuses to give up his life-saving work.

People are asking for help. We’re working on arranging buses.” He notes that it’s incredibly difficult to find drivers willing to risk their lives to ferry refugees to safety, and the cost of hiring drivers is tremendous. Once refugees are out of Ukraine, they require assistance. “Everyone left everything behind,” Rabbi Podolsky explains.

Rabbi Podolsky has set up an emergency fund to help his life-saving work rescue Ukrainian Jews. To donate, go to: https://thechesedfund.com/Kyiv

Moved by a Esther Horgen's murder HY"D. By Dalit

מצווה גוררת מצווה

More than a year ago on a winter day I drove from the settlement to work. It was one o'clock in the morning.

In the middle of the way I listened to the news and it was said that she was murdered in the northern Samaria settlement Tal Menashe... She is Esther Horgen.

My hand turned into a punch and I hit hard on the wheel.

A response is not typical to me

Something hit me in the heart... Strong

Something cried... : How does such a thing happen to us???

Then like all the people of Israel I followed, I cried...

When I saw her picture I saw a beautiful woman. Mother of 6 children is a dual and artistic caregiver. I was born in the same month and the same year I was born.

I felt a connection close to her and I woke up in the desire to draw her.

I proposed to the chairman of the committee in our settlement to print and give from our settlement to its settlement as a participation in their grief. But I still haven't painted and our settlement chose other gifts...

When I drew the drawing, it got over 2400 likes in the group, I did it with my own hands.

… fast forward.

And in the meantime the painting was placed in my studio

I decided to assume him.. In the sense of sourness. Approaching family was not an option in my opinion.

How did I feel about a family that just passed through a disaster? What a huge loss has happened... What do they care about drawing??!!

And then a friend who walked with me suggested: turn to him to her almanac...

On Thursday I married to the love of my heart and soul Esther's Alman (widower) and my best friend... My beloved husband Benjamin Horgen.

We've come a long way through tears, acquaintance, friendship, joy, sharing and great love I met a beautiful noble man who lives in faith, sees the best in everything, a dedicated and sensitive father to his wonderful children. Acted in endless ways for the remembrance of his beloved wife that everyone knew how wonderful she was, and no less important work in Israel and beyond her so that such cases will not happen to us again and this is by strengthening the power of deterrence, stopping sources of terrorist funding, raising awareness and strengthening the support of Israel of public leaders in Europe And in the world and adding light...

In addition to him I have been blessed with an amazing large family of truly beautiful and noble people! His father and wife, his charming talented and beautiful children and grandchildren! Who accepted me despite the enormous difficulty. His brother and sister and their family and his extended family and her dear family of Esther who is now family, and also wonderful and close friends.

I thank God for his mercy.

I thank my very dear family, my parents, my brother and all my relatives and friends and my beloved children who are always with me throughout the Daniel Arnon Tal Arnon Tamari to my dear groom Meir Tamari and to my beloved granddaughter. - Dalit Horgen

The Poor and Hungry Boy in the Russian Cold thanks to Devorah Channah Adney

This happened several years ago, in the midst of Chanukah. In Moscow, a large Chanukah party was held for the Jewish community, which was attended by Rabbi Berl Lazar Shlita- the Chief Rabbi of Russia to this day, and the President of Russia – Mr. Vladimir Putin.

The Chief Rabbi held a speech on Chanukah eve, after which the President was given the honor to speak in the presence of the large crowd that had gathered there.

Putin stood up to speak and surprised the crowd:

“Please listen, Jews, as I want to tell you a real story that happened here in Russia, I’m familiar with all its details.

“A poor family lived in one of the neighborhoods – two parents and one small child. The parents worked hard from morning until night to make a living, while their child returned to an empty and lonely home until his parents came back. He sat in the small, dark house, hungry and lonely, joyless, with nothing to do, until his parents came home and gave him some food.

“And there, in their neighborhood, lived a modest and good Jewish family. Every time they saw the little boy waiting alone in the house, they would approach him and ask him if he had anything to eat. In most cases, he would say no, and they immediately did their best to ensure he had warm and delicious food to eat, without ever asking for anything in return.

“On Shabbats and Jewish holidays, they invited him to their home and served him delicacies and meats, all out of the goodness of their generous hearts, they were compassionate and always looked for ways to make him feel better.

“So for a long time, the non-Jewish boy became a part of the family in their home, he received a large portion of food, same as the rest of the family members. When the Jews saw that the boy’s clothes were ripped, they made sure to give him warm and cozy clothes suited for the Russian cold. This kid didn’t know how to thank them, they just saved his life every day.

“Dozens of non-Jewish neighbors who knew about this, didn’t even pay him any attention, and it was only this family that cared for others, and were looking at what was happening around them, who saved his miserable soul.”

President Putin ended his speech with a shocking revelation and said, “Dear Jews, do you want me to tell you who that poor, miserable boy was whose life was enlightened by Jews?”

Then he went on to say:

“This was me… and I will never be able to forget the sympathy and compassion of the Jews that cared for me.

"To this day, I can still hear the melody of the meal hand-washing blessing, Hamotzi, and Birkat Hamazon said by the family members whenever I attended their Shabbat and holiday meals.

“I don’t forget, dear Jews, the good you’ve done to me, I am the president of the superpower that is Russia, and hence, our relationship is so good, it’s all thanks to how much you care about the others, and the poor!” Putin declared excitedly.

[Taken from the book “Mashcheni Achareycha by Rabbi Reuven Elbaz. Putin also mentions this family in his autobiography].

In gratitude, Vladimir Putin bought an apartment for his Jewish Mama when she moved to Israel. He has now inherited it in return.

From a man calling himself "Daas Torah". 32 years in Kharkov.

From the Chabad Emissary to the city of Kharkov of Ukraine:

It says that on Shabbat you are not supposed to cry, this Shabbat I can't even count how many times I failed.

But let me first share how much has happened this past week.

Last Sunday morning, we heard that the Russian tanks had entered Kharkov. The bombings were getting louder and everyone in Kharkov were ordered to stay at home. A Russian tank was blown up next to the synagogue and shootings could be heard throughout the city. After a big battle the Russian forces were out of the city and we hoped we would now have quiet.

But Monday morning rockets started flying throughout the city. Buildings, hospitals, schools. The curfew was lifted for a few hours and I managed with my husband and my children to get to the synagogue to deal with the thousands of calls and messages of people desperate for food, medicine and how to escape from the city. The whole day people streamed into the synagogue to move into the basement. A place where they knew they would get food and shelter and a feeling of togetherness.

Tuesday morning at 8am we heard a gigantic boom. The government building on the Freedom Square was bombed and a few minutes later we heard an explosion. The whole house shook as we huddled together in our basement where we have been living for a week. Close. Very close. The street is full of smoke. We sneak outside to see the fire engines. A direct missile strike two doors from our house. Very close.

The whole day aerial strikes rain down on the city. As we once again go to the synagogue, the sound of explosions, rockets and shooting in background the tragedy becomes bigger. More people trapped without food and medicine and water. Our brave driver goes to bring hot food to the 95 year old man on the sixth floor. The Israeli family that were five days in the underground subway station finally moved into the synagogue. The phones keep ringing. The heart breaks as we know we can't help everyone. We make it home just as the curfew starts. Our beautiful city is being destroyed. Lives are lost. Desperate for the miracle we have been praying for.

An explosion. Our kindergarten and school has had all its windows and doors blown out. Our school, where just a week ago we celebrated 30 years since its opening. With 400 happy children with balloons and flowers. In the same dining room where they sang "Oseh Shalom"(He should make peace) there was now glass and destruction.

Wednesday morning, we realize we have to leave with all the other ten families from Kharkov to a nearby city of Dnieper. From there we will continue to help Kharkov.

We pack up our lives of the past 32 years into 3 suitcases. Trying to decide what we need …what we could live without.

The morning bombings start again but I go with my husband to the synagogue.

I go down to the basement where everyone is sleeping on mattresses on the floor. I tell Ola the cook that we will be back soon. We cry. I really want to be back soon. My husband goes up to kiss the curtain of the Aron Kodesh. To let Him know that we are coming back. This synagogue where just a month ago we celebrated our daughter's wedding with 500 people. This synagogue which was closed for seventy years under Communist rule and was used as a sports complex. This synagogue has to keep its light burning…

We leave our home. No time to deal with all the emotions. As we hear explosions and bombings in the distance we get in the van. We drive out of Kharkov and see all the damage. Heartbreaking.

"Repeat after me…" I tell my children and grandchildren. The prayer for a safe trip 'tefillas haderech'. I add the line "vetachazireinu leshalom"(and to return in peace) with tears. So want to return.

In Dnieper we are treated like kings thanks to the community and have our first night sleep without any bombings. But we realize the next day we have to move on.

We travel for over 24 hours through checkpoints and borders till we arrive in Kishinev where we stay for Shabbat.

We are used to being the ones who are giving. Now we are the ones on the receiving end, thanking the Chabad shluchim (emissaries) of Kishinev for their hospitality.

Shabbat Chazak. Last week in Kharkov. This week in Kishinev

The tears?

Lighting Shabbat candles knowing that throughout the world I am joined with girls and women praying that there should be peace in Ukraine. That we should be able to continue our Shlichus. That this should be the last moments of this exile. That we should have strength. Chazak.

Sitting at the Friday night meal together with over a hundred other Jews young and old from all over Ukraine. All so unsure of their future. All so wanting to be home.

And the tears flow when I see my fellow shluchim, the families who have worked side by side with us all these years to build our beautiful community known for its unity and warmth…who could not bring themselves to leave Kharkov behind…and now we are all going to different corners of the world…"vetachazireinu leshalom"...we will return.

As one by one the men and boys say the Hagomel prayer(the prayer said when getting out of danger)…everyone in unison said Chazak, Chazak venitchazek…we should all have strength.

And as all the women and girls joined to make a Shabbat Kalla for the bride whose wedding was supposed to be next week in Kiev and is on hold till she can fly to New York we sang and sang.

And everyone was in tears as the young daughters of the shluchim in Summy sang the song they sang all week when they were scared and frightened from the bombing and the difficult journey out of their city…"I believe in Hashem, I trust in Hashem…" and as my young daughter sang the famous song "Abba"...'bamilchamot shomer aleinu'(In wars He guards us)

And the moments we couldn't capture.

The dance to "vesomachto vechagecha"(and you should rejoice on your festivals). "What is the Chag? What is the festival here?" a surprised journalist asked my husband. "A Chassidic Rebbe's son wanted a candy so he made the blessing so that his father had no choice and gave it to him. So too we are celebrating already so Hashem will give us what to celebrate for" Shavua Tov.

Over one thousand messages waiting…asking to save their relatives, to send someone food, to make sure there is enough food in the synagogue to feed all those who come, to arrange the evacuation buses…Kharkov.

We will be back!

The Lubavitcher Rebbe's message of a little light dispelling the darkness is needed more than ever before. Bombing the world with good deeds, with the lights of Shabbat candles, with a prayer, tefillin, charity and kindness. The light will outshine the darkness.

As we board the plane to Israel we pray that today we will be joined by all of the Jewish nation with the coming of the final redemption where there will be no wars and suffering.

Vetachazireinu leshalom. We should return in peace. – Rebbitzen Miriam Moskovitz.
