Woe Oy Voy Gewalt! Baruch Dayan
Emmes Gadol HaDor Minister of Torah Rav Shmaryahu Chaim Kanievsky.
When HASHEM takes a Tzaddik like
Rav Chaim TzZal it is a sacrifice to save us from an evil decree on Am Yisrael.
More on Rav Chaim TzZal will appear below. https://www.israelnationalnews.com/news/324218
I received the notification that after an over
20year battle with cancer one of the former people on my prayer list Nirit
Hodaya bas Mazel Yaish passed away she was around age 47.
Parsha Shemini
We are in the middle of the
dedication of the Mishkan and tragedy strikes. Two of the greatest Tzaddikim
are taken from Am Yisrael. This week in Inyanay Diyoma there is a 5 minute
video-audio where the mayor of Yerushalayim describes finishing his Purim Seuda
(meal) and getting the news of Rav Chaim Kanievsky's soul coming to rest. From
very high joy to deep sorrow. The Parsha takes a breather from the tragedy and
goes on to talk about Kosher Species.
9:1 And it came to
pass on the eighth day, that Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of
Israel; 2 and he said unto Aaron: 'Take thee a bull-calf for a
sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering, without blemish, and offer them
before the LORD. 3 And unto the children of Israel thou shalt speak,
saying: Take ye a he-goat for a sin-offering; and a calf and a lamb, both of
the first year, without blemish, for a burnt-offering; 4 and an ox
and a ram for peace-offerings, to sacrifice before the LORD; and a
meal-offering mingled with oil; for to-day the LORD appears unto
you.' 5 And they brought that which Moses commanded before the tent
of meeting; and all the congregation drew near and stood before the LORD.
This was the day of celebration for Shevis (tribe
of) Menashe and the Nasi (prince) was bringing his gifts.
6 And Moses said: 'This is the thing which
the LORD commanded that ye should do; that the glory of the LORD may appear
unto you.' 7 And Moses said unto Aaron: 'Draw near unto the altar,
and offer thy sin-offering, and thy burnt-offering, and make atonement for
thyself, and for the people; and present the offering of the people, and make
atonement for them; as the LORD commanded.'
The ceremony was going according to plans like
the other seven princes and tribes beforehand.
8 So Aaron drew near unto the altar, and
slew the calf of the sin-offering, which was for himself. 9 And the
sons of Aaron presented the blood unto him; and he dipped his finger in the
blood, and put it upon the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the
base of the altar. 10 But the fat, and the kidneys, and the lobe of
the liver of the sin-offering, he made smoke upon the altar; as the LORD
commanded Moses.
As Moshe had taught him and now he was working on
his own supervision with Moshe watching.
11 And the flesh and the skin were burnt
with fire without the camp. 12 And he slew the burnt-offering; and
Aaron's sons delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar
round about. 13 And they delivered the burnt-offering unto him, piece
by piece, and the head; and he made them smoke upon the altar. 14 And
he washed the inwards and the legs, and made them smoke upon the burnt-offering
on the altar. 15 And the people's offering was presented; and he took
the goat of the sin-offering which was for the people, and slew it, and offered
it for sin, as the first. 16 And the burnt-offering was presented;
and he offered it according to the ordinance.
Even though the Torah is repeating the process,
we see here how the process was done. It is also coming to teach the Cohanim in
our generation about the rededication of the Temple.
17 And the meal-offering was presented; and
he filled his hand therefrom, and made it smoke upon the altar, besides the
burnt-offering of the morning. 18 He slew also the ox and the ram,
the sacrifice of peace-offerings, which was for the people; and Aaron's sons
delivered unto him the blood, and he dashed it against the altar round
about, 19 and the fat of the ox, and of the ram, the fat tail, and
that which covers the inwards, and the kidneys, and the lobe of the
liver. 20 And they put the fat upon the breasts, and he made the fat
smoke upon the altar. 21 And the breasts and the right thigh Aaron
waved for a wave-offering before the LORD; as Moses commanded. 22 And
Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down
from offering the sin-offering, and the burnt-offering, and the
peace-offerings.
After the other Korbanos, the tribe of Menashe
could bring peace offerings.
23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of
meeting, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of the LORD
appeared unto all the people. 24 And there came forth fire from
before the LORD, and consumed upon the altar the burnt-offering and the fat;
and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.
The first seven days it appears
that with Moshe demonstrating to Aaron that a fire had to be kindled. Now this
fire came straight from heaven.
10:1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of
Aaron, took each of them his censer, and put fire therein, and laid incense
thereon, and offered strange fire before the LORD, which He had not commanded
them.
The emphasis is on the words 'not
commanded'. Later the Torah will tell us not to add or retract from the
Mitzvos.
2 And there came forth fire from before the LORD, and
devoured them, and they died before the LORD. 3 Then Moses said unto
Aaron: 'This is it that the LORD spoke, saying: Through them that are nigh unto
Me I will be sanctified, and before all the people I will be glorified.' And
Aaron held his peace.
This is a generalization but
whenever a great person like the son-in-law of the Chofetz Chaim passed away, it
was to save many Jews from the Holocaust and perhaps disease. Rav Kanievsky Zatzal
was taken from us suddenly as a sign it was a sacrifice against some danger.
Rabbi Ovadia Yosef died after illness but not a sacrifice.
Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons: 'Let not the hair of your
heads go loose, neither rend your clothes, that ye die not, and that He be not
wroth with all the congregation; but let your brethren, the whole house of Israel,
bewail the burning which the LORD hath kindled. 7 And ye shall not go
out from the door of the tent of meeting, lest ye die; for the anointing oil of
the LORD is upon you.' And they did according to the word of Moses.
The Cohanim could not show mourning
and stop the service. The Cohain Gadol had a special short haircut – Tractate Shabbos
where the root of one hair had a follicle that would touch the root of the
neighbor hair. So Am Yisrael mourned the loss of these two great men.
8 And the LORD spoke unto Aaron,
saying: 9 'Drink no wine nor strong drink, thou, nor thy sons with
thee, when ye go into the tent of meeting, that ye die not; it shall be a
statute forever throughout your generations.
This implies that the deceased had
some wife before sacrificing.
10 And that ye may put
difference between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the
clean; 11 and that ye may teach the children of Israel all the
statutes which the LORD hath spoken unto them by the hand of Moses.'
While under the influence, even if
moderate, their guard against Tuma might have been down.
12 And Moses spoke unto Aaron,
and unto Eleazar and unto Ithamar, his sons that were left: 'Take the
meal-offering that remains of
the offerings of the LORD made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the
altar; for it is most holy. 13 And ye shall eat it in a holy place,
because it is thy due, and thy sons' due, of the offerings of the LORD made by
fire; for so I am commanded. 14 And the breast of waving and the
thigh of heaving shall ye eat in a clean place; thou, and thy sons, and thy
daughters with thee; for they are given as thy due, and thy sons' due, out of
the sacrifices of the peace-offerings of the children of Israel. 15 The
thigh of heaving and the breast of waving shall they bring with the offerings
of the fat made by fire, to wave it for a wave-offering before the LORD; and it
shall be thine, and thy sons' with thee, as a due for ever; as the LORD hath
commanded.'
They were not allowed to mourn and
had to continue on as 'business as usual' while the whole nation mourned.
16 And Moses diligently
inquired for the goat of the sin-offering, and, behold, it was burnt; and he
was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron that were left,
saying: 17 'Wherefore have ye not eaten the sin-offering in the place
of the sanctuary, seeing it is most holy, and He hath given it you to bear the
iniquity of the congregation, to make atonement for them before the LORD? 18 Behold,
the blood of it was not brought into the sanctuary within; ye should certainly
have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.'
Moshe was concerned that Aaron was
not eating as commanded.
19 And Aaron spoke unto Moses:
'Behold, this day have they offered their sin-offering and their burnt-offering
before the LORD, and there have befallen me such things as these; and if I had
eaten the sin-offering to-day, would it have been well-pleasing in the sight of
the LORD?
How can I eat, I have lost my
ability to have an appetite.
20 And when Moses heard that,
it was well-pleasing in his sight.
Moshe agreed with Aaron it does not
say that he consulted the L-RD.
11:1 And the LORD spoke
unto Moses and to Aaron, saying unto them: 2 Speak unto the children
of Israel, saying: These are the living things which ye may eat among all the
beasts that are on the earth. 3 Whatsoever parts the hoof, and is
wholly cloven-footed, and chews the cud, among the beasts, that may ye
eat.
Cloven-footed and chewing its cud are mutually
inclusive this animals with one part either ruminates but not cloven-footed or
is cloven-footed and does not ruminate are excluded.
4 Nevertheless these shall ye not eat of
them that only chew the cud, or of them that only part the hoof: the camel,
because he chews the cud but parts not the hoof, he is unclean unto
you. 5 And the rock-badger, because he chews the cud but parts not
the hoof, he is unclean unto you. 6 And the hare, because she chews
the cud but parts not the hoof, she is unclean unto you. 7 And the
swine, because he parts the hoof, and is cloven-footed, but chews not the cud,
he is unclean unto you.
It turns out that of all the species in the world
discovered in the 7 continents, only these mentioned above are the existing
species in the world.
8 Of their flesh ye shall not eat, and their
carcasses ye shall not touch; they are unclean unto you.
This is one reason on Shabbos and Yom Tov not to
play American Football for the Pigskin is not kosher. As for a child's plastic
football within an Eruv it is not the Ta'am aka taste of Shabbos if you are
over 9.5 years old that considered the age of education but it is not forbidden
by Tuma.
9 These may ye eat of all that are in the
waters: whatsoever hath fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the
rivers, them may ye eat.
Again mutual inclusive so as far as we know
crabs, eels, sharks, barracudas, sea horse, shrimps, lobsters, clams, turtles,
snails, do not fit this description. The Talmud goes on to exclude sea
creatures that give live births like, whales, seals, porpoises, dolphins,
otters, etc.
10 And all that have not fins and scales in
the seas, and in the rivers, of all that swarm in the waters, and of all the
living creatures that are in the waters, they are a detestable thing unto
you, 11 and they shall be a detestable thing unto you; ye shall not
eat of their flesh, and their carcasses ye shall have in detestation.
In fresh water you have catfish, muscles, snails,
etc. Even their skin, bones, etc. are detestable.
12 Whatsoever hath no fins nor scales in the
waters, that is a detestable thing unto you.
My wife and I were in France and in the
supermarket there were live lobsters that stunk so much my wife got nausea.
13 And these ye shall have in detestation
among the fowls; they shall not be eaten, they are a detestable thing: the
great vulture, and the bearded vulture, and the osprey; 14 and the
kite, and the falcon after its kinds; 15 every raven after its
kinds; 16 and the ostrich, and the night-hawk, and the sea-mew, and
the hawk after its kinds; 17 and the little owl, and the cormorant,
and the great owl; 18 and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the
carrion-vulture; 19 and the stork, and the heron after its kinds, and
the hoopoe, and the bat.
They eat creeping things and carcasses of
creatures so it is detestable. The bat is capable of transmitting rabbies too.
20 All winged swarming things that go upon
all fours are a detestable thing unto you.
These are insects.
21 Yet these may ye eat of all winged
swarming things that go upon all fours, which have jointed legs above their
feet, wherewith to leap upon the earth; 22 even these of them ye may
eat: the locust after its kinds, and the bald locust after its kinds, and the
cricket after its kinds, and the grasshopper after its kinds.
There are exceptions and they are locusts,
grasshoppers and crickets. However, since most Jews outside of the Yemenites
have lost this tradition which is kosher we avoid these insects. I one was
starving then it would be a different story.
23 But all winged swarming things, which
have four feet, are a detestable thing unto you. 24 And by these ye
shall become unclean; whosoever touches the carcass of them shall be unclean
until even. 25 And whosoever bears aught of the carcass of them shall
wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
This is why we don't make ourselves impure with
the US Pigskin Football.
26 Every beast which parts the hoof, but is
not cloven footed, nor cheweth the cud, is unclean unto you; every one that
touches them shall be unclean. 27 And whatsoever goes upon its paws,
among all beasts that go on all fours, they are unclean unto you; whoso touches
their carcass shall be unclean until the even. 28 And he that bears
the carcass of them shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even; they
are unclean unto you.
We do not have this with live dogs and cats and
one may touch and pet them on Shabbos during their life-time if they are your
pets but otherwise they are Mukseh (forbidden to touch on Shabbos by the
Rabbis).
29 And these are they which are unclean unto
you among the swarming things that swarm upon the earth: the weasel, and the
mouse, and the great lizard after its kinds, 30 and the gecko, and
the land-crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand-lizard, and the chameleon. 31 These
are they which are unclean to you among all that swarm; whosoever doth touch
them, when they are dead, shall be unclean until the even.
These animals are disgusting to you.
32 And upon whatsoever any of them, when
they are dead, doth fall, it shall be unclean; whether it be any vessel of
wood, or raiment, or skin, or sack, whatsoever vessel it be, wherewith any work
is done, it must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the even;
then shall it be clean. 33 And every earthen vessel whereinto any of
them falls, whatsoever is in it shall be unclean, and it ye shall
break. 34 All food therein which may be eaten, that on which water
comes, shall be unclean; and all drink in every such vessel that may be drunk
shall be unclean.
If a mouse died in water one should throw it out.
Thus during plagues often the Jews survived as things were disgusting to them.
35 And everything whereupon any part of their
carcass falls shall be unclean; whether oven, or range for pots, it shall be
broken in pieces; they are unclean, and shall be unclean unto
you. 36 Nevertheless a fountain or a cistern wherein is a gathering
of water shall be clean; but he who touches their carcass shall be
unclean. 37 And if aught of their carcass fall upon any sowing seed
which is to be sown, it is clean. 38 But if water be put upon the
seed, and aught of their carcass fall thereon, it is unclean unto you.
Thus often the Jews did not get diseases that the
Goyim got.
39 And if any beast, of which ye may eat,
die, he that touches the carcass thereof shall be unclean until the even. 40 And he that eats of the carcass of it shall wash his
clothes, and be unclean until the even; he also that beareth the carcass of it
shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the even.
For a number of reasons these animals die. 1)
torn by beasts is Trafe. 2) Or died by itself through either old age or disease
is a Nevaila.
41 And every swarming thing that swarms upon
the earth is a detestable thing; it shall not be eaten. 42 Whatsoever
goes upon the belly, and whatsoever goes upon all fours, or whatsoever hath
many feet, even all swarming things that swarm upon the earth, them ye shall
not eat; for they are a detestable thing.
Snakes are forbidden to eat.
43 Ye shall not make yourselves detestable
with any swarming thing that swarms, neither shall ye make yourselves unclean
with them, that ye should be defiled thereby. 44 For I
am the LORD your God; sanctify yourselves therefore, and be ye holy; for I am
holy; neither shall ye defile yourselves with any manner of swarming thing that
moves upon the earth. 45 For I am the LORD that
brought you up out of the land of Egypt, to be your God; ye shall therefore be
holy, for I am holy.
The implication here you will only see in Chapter
19 when all of Yisrael is commanded to be holy.
46 This is the law of the beast, and of the
fowl, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, and of every
creature that swarms upon the earth; 47 to make a
difference between the unclean and the clean, and between the living thing that
may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.
Prince of Torah -
the life of Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky by Rabbi Shraga Simmons.
https://aish.com/prince-of-torah-the-life-of-rabbi-chaim-kanievsky/
Imagine discovering at
the earliest age a passion for an endeavor for which you have an abundance of
natural talent and skill. Add to that the head-start of growing up surrounded
by the giants in your chosen field, who closely mentor your progress. For
decades, thousands flocking to your home seeking sagely advice, and you produce
dozens of scholarly volumes on the entire breadth and depth of your chosen
field.
Add to that a
single-minded focus and unwavering devotion to the goal – day after day, year
after year - for 94 years.
That was the life of
Rabbi Chaim Kanievsky - the undisputed Prince of Torah (Sar HaTorah) - who was
buried today in the central Israel city of Bnei Brak, as hundreds of thousands
converged to pay last respects.
Shmaryahu Yosef Chaim
Kanievsky was born in 1928 in Pinsk, now Belarus. His father, Rabbi Yaakov Y.
Kanievsky, was the widely revered Steipler Gaon. When Chaim was 6, the
Kanievsky family moved to Israel. On the sea voyage, Chaim sat day after day
with his father, absorbed in Torah study. As they neared the shores of the Holy
Land, they were about to complete study of Exodus, when suddenly his father
kissed the book and closed it. "Let's wait until we arrive," he
explained, “so we can celebrate in the Holy Land."
This gave young Chaim
not only an appreciation for the preciousness of Torah study, but also love for
the land of Israel. Since then, he never departed the borders of Israel, and
became a lifetime advocate for aliyah, encouraging people to move to Israel.
Rav Chaim never departed the borders of Israel, and became
a lifetime advocate for aliyah, encouraging people to move to Israel.
Rav Chaim’s childhood
home was the center of the Torah world, with people from around the world
gathering there to confer with some of the greatest rabbis of the 20th century.
Besides his revered father, Rav Chaim’s uncle was Rabbi Avraham Y. Karelitz
(the Chazon Ish), the premier Torah leader during the critical years of Israeli
independence. The Chazon Ish, himself childless, showered Rav Chaim with
constant tutelage and individual attention, grooming him in the art of Torah
scholarship.
Rav Chaim, a child
prodigy with a photographic memory, elucidated complex Talmudic teachings at a
young age. As a boy, he studied at Yeshiva Tiferes Tzion in Bnei Brak, amusing
himself during recess breaks – not with a ball or board game – but by counting
the number of times various sages are quoted in the Talmud. For his bar
mitzvah, he completed the Babylonian Talmud (Shas), a feat that many do not
manage to achieve in a lifetime.
In the 1948 Israeli
War of Independence, when five Arab armies attacked, a state of emergency was
declared and every Israeli was mobilized into the IDF, no exceptions. At the
time, Rav Chaim was a 20-year-old student at the Lomza Yeshiva in Petach Tikva.
On one occasion, a truck pulled up to the yeshiva and transferred all the
students to the site of artillery fighting near Tel Aviv. Rav Chaim was ordered
to climb a large hill and, due to the vast shortage of armaments, was given a
stick and two stones to fend off potential attackers. Rav Chaim took along a
volume of Talmud, climbed the hill and – in classic form – managed to study Torah
the entire time until the skirmish was over.
Rav Chaim married
Batsheva, the daughter of Judaism’s leading legal decider, Rabbi
Yosef S. Elyashiv (and granddaughter of
Rabbi Aryeh Levine, beloved Tzaddik of Jerusalem). Rav Chaim’s illustrious
lineage was unmatched, although that alone is insufficient to ensure success.
Metaphorically, “nine zeros is not a billion” unless an actual number is added
in front. So too, Rav Chaim was surrounded by Judaism’s leading Sages, but what
he added at the beginning made it all count.
Rav Chaim was a
private citizen, leading no synagogue or yeshiva, and with no official teaching
or rabbinic position. For years, he occupied a nondescript seat in Kollel
Chazon Ish, conducting uninterrupted in-depth research and writing. Once, as a
young man, he considered taking a paid position, but his father said: “Your
contribution is to sit and learn. Period.” With commitment and diligence, Rav
Chaim never wavered from that advice, becoming this generation’s paradigm of
nonstop Torah study.
Inside Rav Chaim’s
modest home on Rashbam Street, every room and hallway were lined with
bookshelves, crammed with thousands of Torah books. On Shabbat, Rav Chaim would
play a game with his children. One of them would name a book title, and Rav
Chaim would educate and entertain the children by immediately telling them its
precise location among the volumes filling every inch of wall space.
Rav Chaim maintained a
breathtaking schedule, waking at 2 a.m. for a rigorous 20-hour-a-day study of
the entire biblical and rabbinic corpus including Tanach, Mishnah, Babylonian
and Jerusalem Talmuds, Midrashim, Zohar, and all the primary works of Jewish
law: Maimonides’ Mishneh Torah, Tur, Shulchan Aruch (Code of Jewish Law), and Mishnah Berurah.
Rav Chaim toiled day
and night, saying that the mental energy expended on Torah study is more
physically taxing than digging ditches or laying bricks. Few people manage to
study so many intricate works in a lifetime. Rav Chaim completed them all -
every single year.
The Kanievsky’s had a
small apartment, and the young children slept in a room filled to the brim with
beds. When a wealthy visitor once offered to buy them a spacious house, they
declined, explaining that it encourages people to see that economic hardship
does not preclude devotion to Torah study.
Rav Chaim learned
before dawn with a study partner and they wanted to be able to awaken and study
right away. Despite the already over-crowded conditions, a spot was found for
the study partner to sleep in the Kanievsky’s apartment on a regular basis.
Rav Chaim published
dozens of volumes that are modern classics, including Derech Emunah, Derech
Chochma, Shoneh Halachos, and Ta'ama D'kra. With unparalleled breadth of
knowledge, Rav Chaim was uniquely qualified in obscure topics of Jewish law,
such as lunar cycles, agricultural laws in Israel, and a groundbreaking
commentary on the Jerusalem Talmud.
Additionally, Rav
Chaim authored tens of thousands of rabbinic responsa on nearly every
conceivable aspect of Torah. Each week he would sequester himself in a room
with stacks of hundreds of letters, and patiently responded to every single
one. Due to the sheer volume and to maximize his time, Rav Chaim’s responses were
record-breaking brief – typically a single line, and often limited to one word
in microscopic letters, occasionally adding a reference to the Jewish codes.
Rav Chaim made an art
out of brevity. When delivering words of encouragement, to save precious
seconds, he invented the word “Boo-ha,” an acronym for “blessings and success.”
As the world’s most
learned sage, Rav Chaim had insights into every possible dilemma – personal,
communal, or global. Despite his reluctance to take a position of public leadership,
tens of thousands of people from around the world - politicians,
businesspeople, educators, and foreign dignitaries - flocked to Rav Chaim’s
modest home on Rashbam Street.
At appointed times
each day, the steep staircase outside Rav Chaim’s home would be lined with
visitors waiting to enter, with lines often snaking around his house. Thousands
would enter his inner chamber for blessings, inspiration, and sage advice from
this humble human being, endowed with Divine guidance. Preferential treatment was
given to little boys celebrating their third birthday, the day of their upsherin (first haircut),
as Rav Chaim recognized the challenge of asking young children to wait in line.
For most of Rav
Chaim’s life, he left decisions on communal matters to others. A few years ago,
when I went to consult with Rav Chaim regarding a project of communal concern,
he listened to my question and then – characteristically – sent me to consult
with his Bnei Brak colleague, Rabbi A.Y.L. Shteinman. Rav Chaim often expressed
tremendous gratitude to Rabbi Steinman for shouldering that burden of
responsibility, enabling Rav Chaim to continue his studies uninterrupted.
Rav Chaim was renowned
for being honored multiple times - every day - as sandek*, holding
the baby at a Bris Milah. In 1999, Rav Chaim accepted an invitation to the Bris
of my son. At the appointed hour, he swept through the front door of my home
and, with nary a word, unfurled the tattered Tallis – inherited from his
saintly father – that he wore at every bris. In our living room, Rav Chaim
served as sandek, lovingly dropping wine into the baby’s mouth, imparting spiritual
influence on the baby, and praying intently for his future success.
Serving as sandek is
considered a merit for becoming wealthy, and someone once asked Rav Chaim,
"If you serve so often as sandek, why are you not wealthy? He replied that
“wealth” is not limited to money, and quoted his father that wealth is attained
by publishing Torah commentaries. Rav Chaim added his own opinion that
grandchildren are a source of tremendous wealth.
Rav Chaim’s time was
highly structured, and keeping to such a rigorous schedule comes with intendant
risks, particularly regarding one’s private life. Rebbetzin Kanievsky had every
right to voice opposition to this hyper-focus on Torah study, which ostensibly
came at her expense. Yet she was his biggest supporter. Someone once made Rav
Chaim a generous offer, which involved him spending two minutes not related to
Torah study or community matters. Rav Chaim presented the proposal to his wife,
who nixed the idea, saying that two additional minutes of Torah study were worth
more to her than anything else.
Fittingly, Rav Chaim
passed away on Shushan Purim, a day when Haman – descendant of the biblical
Amalek – fought to annihilate the Jewish people. Amalek represents ideologies
antithetical to Torah; the best weapon we have against that is the study and
practice of Torah. For 94 years, Rav Chaim Kanievsky fulfilled that mandate to
the utmost.
With thanks to A
Gadol in Our Time: Stories about Rav Chaim Kanievsky.

One such baby was my oldest
grandson, Noam, who attended with his wife and children the funeral. At the
finish of the Bris people came to Rav Chaim for a blessing. My blessing was
that I lived long enough to see my first grandson born and that my father did
not live long enough to see me graduate College or get married.
My question to Rav Chaim was: Recently, there was
a Solar Eclipse that occurred at Sunset but the Molad was declared at 10:00 AM.
What is the meaning of this? He replied that the declaration of the Molad is
the average Molad of 29 days. 12 hrs. and 793 parts of an hour divided into
1080 parts. So the month reached that number from the last Molad at 10AM while
the real Molad as observed was around sunset.
Rav Chaim requested no pictures during the Bris so
as not to upset the Mohel.
The first time I met Rav Chaim was
one afternoon during his year of mourning. My Rav lived near his Schul,
Lederman. I went in and I saw some Dafim of Gemara open for learning Shas in
memory of the Steipler Rebbe. I took a Daf. I figured that he must be sitting
in the front of the Schul considering his Status so I looked for a place to
learn and pray not too close to the exit on the left side and in the middle. I
was told to move as the Rav was coming and I was sitting in his place. So I
asked about the place next to it and the people told me fine. So first I sat in
the chair of the Prime Minister of Torah and then prayed next to him. Again did
not want to disturb the Gaon and was satisfied to be in his presence.
One last note attending the funeral
can be physically or like Menashe, who sprained his foot, and me with my own
leg problems got to watch the funeral and Chesped (funeral dirge) of the various
Rabbanim including his son Shlita, Rabbi Yitzchak Silberstein Shlita, his
brother-in-law, 88 and Rav Gershon Edelstein Shlita the Rosh Yeshiva of Ponevezh.
If you recall there was a young
man who had a scar on his face that came to Rav. Chaim. He was embarrassed
about and asked for a Bracha. Rav Chaim gave him a Bracha and said, "Next
time tell the story of how you got the scar."
On the next date, the boy said
that he saw an Arab trying to attack a Frum Girl. He intervened and saved the
girl but got scared for life by the Arab's knife. It turned out that his date
(now wife) was the girl he saved.

“Short skirt… crop top… bikini… bra… see-through… nothing…”
Hollywood
is extremely competitive and the more you comply to their requests, the more
likely you are to get the role. It surprised me when actresses walked in to an
audition and they weren’t “dressing the part” as instructed by the casting
director. Waiting to go in for an audition, I once frantically asked the girl
sitting next to me, “Is that the outfit we were supposed to wear?! I was given
different instructions.”
“No,
I just wanted to wear this,” she said. “This outfit expresses my individuality.
It helps me stand out.” She came out seconds after she entered the audition
room in tears. “They said I can’t follow directions. I didn’t dress the part!”
In
the beginning, I decided to hold my ground and be unique. I wanted to make it
to the top of Hollywood my way or the highway. I refused to be stripped of my
individuality.
But
in Hollywood competition gets fiercer with age. The most monumental time in an
actress’ career is 18-24. This time frame could make or break you. It is no
secret that wrinkles, weight gain or all sorts of bodily changes happen as you
get older. I felt the pressure of aging and was afraid of my youth fleeing me.
The older I got, the more submissive I became to what was asked of me. I
wouldn’t eat for a week just to wear “The Dress” that I wouldn't be caught dead
in.
I
was willing to let go of being me in order to pursue my dream of being someone
else. I kept telling myself, “It’s only acting. That’s not who I am. I’m original,
unique, modest, sensitive, empowered and intelligent. I’m a diamond.”
It
was only a matter of time before “It’s only acting” became, “It’s only a movie
filming for three weeks… it’s only one scene in the movie… it’s only a
premiere… a business party… a meeting… a luncheon… a public appearance.” Who
was I kidding? I allowed myself to succumb to the pressures of Hollywood that
increasingly objectified me.
Before
every audition, your agent will receive a thing called a “breakdown” which is a
description of the role. Here’s a typical Hollywood breakdown for an audition:
Aria: Lead.
Caucasian, 18, really attractive and skinny with attitude. The kind of girl
that’s not afraid to show off her body. Hottest girl in school. Everyone wants
to be her and every guy wants to be with her. No baggy clothes. Come with sex
appeal. Series Regular
Some
people dream of getting into Hollywood. I lived my dream by leaving it. The
longer I stayed as a working actress, the more I felt like I'd never escape.
The less I felt like my own being, making my own choices in life. When you have
a dream, it’s easy to get lost and do whatever it takes to reach you goal, even
if it means compromising your values.
I
often think back to that 8-year-old girl who was so naive going to auditions
and acting in TV shows. I think back to all those times I wore outfits, said
lines and acted in ways that just weren't a true representation of who I really
am. It’s hard to believe that was me.
I'm now
married and a mother. Would I want my daughter to misrepresent
herself? Would I want my daughter to dress in revealing clothing and do
inappropriate things? It’s my job to be her role model.
I
spent so many years watching movies and dreaming, pretending to be someone
else. I can finally say that real life stories don't happen in the movies. They
happen in real life. Since I left Hollywood, I'm now writing my own story and
hopefully my experience will set an example for others.
Women
are born leaders and true mentors. We can set an example and take a stand. We
need to teach the world that it’s not okay to objectify women because we are
not going to objectify ourselves. It’s our job to realize how much control we
truly have and to walk around life with dignity and preservation of our beauty.
It
was so hard to go against society but the payoff was huge; I felt so much
better about myself. I discovered that inside I really am a diamond. Just as
every diamond is unique, God created every human being unique. And it’s
up to me to live my life with integrity and dignity befitting of my true
internal value.
A few Mezuzah Stories –
Rachamim Pauli
Zev and Levana were expecting their
first child. Zev had been a friend from my Yeshiva and stayed with me for
Pesach. Through my friend Rav Yerachmiel Kram Zal he met the sister-in-law of
Rav Yacov Bitton Shlita and made Aliyah and married her before the Yom Kippur
War.
Levana lost her first baby in the 8th
month due to poisoning of the pregnancy. Rav Yacov and I went to comfort them
and he asked questions to get to the source why such a thing happened. Family
Purity? Not lighting Shabbos or Yom Tov Candles on time? Finally, he asked in
your temporary apartment before you moved into your new home, did you remove
the Mezuzos? The answer came back "yes" and for that children die per
such and such a Sefer.
Years later, I moved into a five
room apartment on Rehov Ezra in Rehovot. The previous tenants had removed all
the Mezuzos and I had to run to a Sofer to buy for a lot of doors. He had the
Mezuzos checked and I made the blessings and put them up. One day my son,
Chaim, broke his left leg (I believe this leg) near the knee and I did not
think anything about it. A few days later, number two son, Asher, has an
infection in his left leg near the knee. I realized that there was something
wrong here. I brought the Mezuzah of their room to the Sofer and over-looked
was the touching of the word or words "Lechtecha B' Derech" (walks on
the way). He took a razor and scraped the long Chaf that was touching the word
below. The boys healed almost instantly.
I did not know at the time the
Doctor or Engineer who had removed the Mezuzos. The year was 5741. In the year,
5742 the Shalom HaGalil war broke out. During the following years, until 5760
the IDF was in southern Lebanon. Sometime around 5745 or 6 the son of the
couple that removed the Mezuzos died in Lebanon on a Kiddush HASHEM.

A few more words about
Pesach Cleaning and Halachos.
I think the sudden passing of Rav
Kanievsky Zatzal brought down certain facts. Stories in Bnei Brak closed,
Highways were closed so no delivery of Pesach or regular goods. All the
millions in Gush Dan either worked from home or were at the funeral or watching
the funeral. In short a full day of Pesach Cleaning, shopping and supply
delivery was lost.
Those learning Hichos Pesach fell
behind in their learning. Essentially most of the time of the funeral from 12
noon until 3 PM had me glued to a radio and two different channel screens.
The Rabbinute in Israel renews
Kashrus Certificates a few times a year. Pesach is one of the mile stones. When
the Rabbi gives out different standards of Kashrus. Let me take for example a
vegetarian and natural food company that really exists but has not applied to
me for Kashrus Supervision. Fig and Honey Bread Co. makes all sorts of vegetarian products. As a Rabbi not
checking the bread and rolls and trying to turn them into Matzos, I would have
other problems. Were the figs and berries used washed of worms, urchins, and
checked properly. Falafel was it ground so if there was a word was so chopped
up it would be cancel the creatures into 60 parts Humus (chick peas) for
minimum Kashrus or was the chick peas checked and sorted so that there should
not be any worms as humanly possible and then ground up Glatt Kosher. Rice and
Leafy products checked for worms.
I know many of my readers become
vegetarian and think that it is better in certain places where there are few
Jews. I, for one am wary, as there is a possibility of eating a worm or small
urchin-ant on a piece of lettuce that has 5 negative precepts vs. pork or
killed and not ritually slaughtered meat or poultry that is one negative
precept. We don't give up immediately on vegetarian and vegan products but work
harder on Kashrus. I personally love to eat all vegetables.
Getting back to our Bread Co. we
know that bread of a non-Jew can be kosher but it depends what was in the oven
within the last 24hours and what oil or yeast/baking soda was or wasn't used.
After 24hours life becomes easier for Kashrus.
Returning to the laws of Pesach.
Certain laws we may or may not have to learn. If one has special sets of dishes
and cooking utensils for Pesach one need not read the laws for koshering
utensils except maybe silver kiddush cups. We usually do not observe the fast
of the first born as most first born children or parents of attend a Talmud or
Seder Mishnah Seeum where that portion is completely and we party with a Le
Chaim and eat something light in the morning.
Most of us will not be baking
Matzos and if we do so it is Rabbinically Supervised. We clean and purchase
items that have a Kosher Le Pesach Certificate. So we need to know whom is the
Rabbi who buys our Chametz and sells to a non-Jew and we can do on-line with
Chabad site and we have to do the search for Chametz. Leaving us with the laws of Pesach night and
the making of the Charoses and conducting the Seder. Finally ending with the
counting of the Omer.
In short, the minimum learning of
Kitzur Shulchan Aruch that one needs to read are the koshering of utensils or
metal utensils, fast of the first born if applicable, search for Chametz,
burning of or disposal of Chametz, the night of the Seder, counting of Omer and
of course the laws of Yom Tov this year for the second two days at the end the
making of the Eruv Tavshillin for cooking from Yom Tov Shabbos and the
knowledge of the usual laws for Yom Tov and Shabbos. This year there is a slight
difference from normal as preparations for the Horse Radish, vegetables either
and/or parsley – radish - potato, salt water and plates must be done before
Shabbos. It is all in the Code of Jewish Law = Kitzur Shulchan Aruch.
Note: The parsley – radish – potato
that we make the blessing on should be less than the size of a medium egg or
theoretically a large olive but the Ashkenazim were not used to the Israeli
Olives so the food grew in size.
