Parsha Tazria
The
Torah is resting these two Parshiyos from the death of the two sons of Aaron. Most
years we have both Tazria and Metzora together but this year is a leap year so
before Pesach we have two short Parshiyos. Death is Avi-Avos HaTuma and one
gives birth with bleeding and a placenta that dies or has Tsoras (mistranslated
as leprosy) one has Av HaTuma. So that is the relationship between the
Parshiyos. Most of Tazria and all of Metzora are based on the skin disease
called Tsoras.
12:1 And the LORD spoke
unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, saying: If a
woman be delivered, and bear a man-child, then she shall be unclean seven days;
as in the days of the impurity of her sickness shall she be unclean.
From
here the Rabbis say that if a woman has her seed ready first in the be fruitful
and multiply act then she will have a male child. The language of the Rabbis is
modest and if I were to describe this in modern English would be more specific
and crasser.
3 And in the eighth day the flesh of his
foreskin shall be circumcised.
She is not Tumay after the Mikveh so that she can
eat and drink with the Congregation and even say the Gomel Prayer after being
in danger during the birthing process.
4 And she shall continue in the blood of
purification three and thirty days; she shall touch no hallowed thing, nor come
into the sanctuary, until the days of her purification be
fulfilled. 5 But if she bear a maid-child, then she shall be unclean
two weeks, as in her impurity; and she shall continue in the blood of
purification threescore and six days.
She gave birth to
a girl and the process should have been the same but the Bris Ceremony gave her
quicker compensation. Why did she have a girl? This was because the husband produced seed prior to the woman.
Meaning that the man and not the woman was the cause of him having a daughter.
6 And when the days of her purification are
fulfilled, for a son, or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb of the first
year for a burnt-offering, and a young pigeon, or a turtle-dove, for a
sin-offering, unto the door of the tent of meeting, unto the priest.
This atonement was for two things, the
possibility of making a vow not to have more children during the birthing
process and/or not proper Kavana during the merging of the male and female soul
that brought about the birth.
7 And he shall offer it before the LORD, and
make atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the fountain of her
blood. This is the law for her that bears, whether a male or a female.
She has been purified by the Mikveh and the
Korban has spiritually cleansed her.
8 And if her means suffice not for a lamb,
then she shall take two turtle-doves, or two young pigeons: the one for a
burnt-offering, and the other for a sin-offering; and the priest shall make
atonement for her, and she shall be clean.
G-D saw that there would be richer and poorer
Jews and for those impoverished Jews, there would be the pigeons instead of the
lamb. Our Rabbis noted that
this was similar to the atonement for a vow. From here the Rabbis learned that
many women while giving birth make a vow not to have more children and
therefore this atonement is appropriate.
13:1
And the LORD spoke unto Moses and unto Aaron, saying: 2 When a man shall have
in the skin of his flesh a rising, or a scab, or a bright spot, and it become
in the skin of his flesh the plague of leprosy, then he shall be brought unto
Aaron the priest, or unto one of his sons the priests.
Our
Rabbis taught us that the spiritual root cause of Tsoras is Lashon HaRa. We
learn this from Moshe who said, “They will not believe me.” He had to put his
hand in his breast and it became ‘leprous’ or whitish. The solution to talking
Lashon HaRa and gossip is to send the man away from the camp and he cannot talk
the Lashon HaRa (I used man but it applies to woman too).
3 And
the priest shall look upon the plague in the skin of the flesh; and if the hair
in the plague be turned white, and the appearance of the plague be deeper than
the skin of his flesh, it is the plague of leprosy; and the priest shall look
on him, and pronounce him unclean. 4 And if the bright spot be white in the
skin of his flesh, and the appearance thereof be not deeper than the skin, and
the hair thereof be not turned white, then the priest shall shut up him that
hath the plague seven days. 5 And the priest shall look on him the seventh day;
and, behold, if the plague stay in its appearance, and the plague be not spread
in the skin, then the priest shall shut him up seven days more.
The
initial time or minimum away from the camp is 7 days and if the person is still
burning to tell Lashon HaRa without repentance then another 7 days apply. The fact is that maybe the appearance of the skin discoloration
will make him stop saying Lashon HaRa.
6 And
the priest shall look on him again the seventh day; and, behold, if the plague
be dim, and the plague be not spread in the skin, then the priest shall
pronounce him clean: it is a scab; and he shall wash his clothes, and be clean.
The
first of 4 different appearances of skin disease.
7 But
if the scab spread abroad in the skin, after that he hath shown himself to the
priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again. 8 And the
priest shall look, and, behold, if the scab be spread in the skin, then the
priest shall pronounce him unclean: it is leprosy.
If
the Tsoras is still active after 21 days, then the person is officially
pronounced unclean. If not, he is purified.
Pesach Mode
By this time if you are like or
following the Rabbi Pauli plan you have acquired your Matzos and a much of your
non-perishable food or frozen food for Pesach by now. Rosh Chodesh that falls
on Shabbos changes around my personal rug cleaning plan. It was either done of
Thursday or Motzei Shabbos-Sunday.
Parts of the refrigerator and deep
freezer are being cleaning. Still by this time most Rabbis are not yet taking
your Chametz Sale but probably Chabad on-line like a real internet sale and
purchase is valid.
I would recommend reading at this
point the 'Seder Night' portion of the Haggadah and purchasing if you need the
ingredients such as nuts, spices, raisins and apples for the Charoses this week
only the lettuce and other perishables should be left for the last week.
The front leg aka Zeroah of the
Sheep or Goat can also be a chicken or turkey wing as it is symbolic. Since we
don't have the Temple or the majority of Jews in Israel to offer up the Korban,
we do not eat roast meat. The original questions from Temple Times was "On
all other nights, we eat roasted, fried or boiled why on this night only roasted?" If the Temple would be in
existence we would not have a symbolic roast but a real one. Nowadays we only
eat boiled and fried just the opposite so as not to say this sheep or goat was
our Korban Pesach.
For those traveling for Pesach: One
must check the following places when one travels. The house where one lives if
30 or less days before Pesach, the hotel room or boat cabin the night before
Pesach, one's office at work.

Orphans in Leadership
a discussion from Rabbi and Dayan S. Mimran and Rabbi R. Pauli
When Rabbi Shlomo Zalman Auerbach
died, there was Rabbi Eliashiv to take his place. When the Steipler Rebbe died
and Rav Eliezer Menachem Man Shach died there was Rav Steinerman and Rav Chaim
Kanievsky to take over. Rav Chaim had deference for Rav Steinerman.
Eventually, Rav Steinerman passed
on and Rav Kanievsky was both Pasak and consulted with Rav Edelstein Shlita,
Rosh Yeshiva Ponevezh. With the death of Rav Kanievsky Zatzal, there is a
rebellion by some students against the Ruv. In my day, no one would dare rebel
against the Rosh Yeshiva. You didn't like the Rosh or his methods you move to
another Yeshiva or Kollel.
Today we are Torah Orphans. There
is nobody that can replace Rav Kanievsky. Perhaps he or up to his
brother-in-law Rav Yitzchak Silberstein Shlita that is basically the end of the
Achronim (later scholars).
I will call my generation the
weaken ones. Rabbi Mimran is strong in Halachos and I B"H have been
blessed with some semblance of Segulos (treasured blessings) like Rav
Kanievsky. Working as a team, we might be able to do what one person was
capable of doing.
There is no replacement. I
learned from Rabbi Yerachmiel Boyer Shlita how the generations are getting
weaker and weaker. My generation was not like that of Rav Chaim Kreisworth
Zatzal or Rabbi Kahaneman Zatzal of Ponevezh. Now we are lost. I watch the next
generation and the one afterwards as I raise Menashe. The TV, Computer and now
Cellphone has weakened our memories, studies etc. On one hand, I can learn Daf
Yomi on my cellphone on the other hand I can waste time of What's App to no
end.
I am an adult and know how short
life is but what about a modern teen or young person the Yetzer to waste time
is worse and worse. With the advent of these devices as good as they can be, we
have to get a grip on ourselves and not make them time-wasters but time savers.
Thus the generations are weaker
and weaker. I am not the first to complain as in the past our Sages in Sotah
49A and B discussed this:
WHEN R. MEIR DIED, THE COMPOSERS OF FABLES CEASED. WHEN
BEN AZZAI DIED, THE ASSIDUOUS STUDENTS [OF TORAH] CEASED. WHEN BEN
ZOMA DIED, THE EXPOSITORS CEASED WHEN R. AKIBA DIED, THE
GLORY OF THE TORAH CEASED. WHEN R. HANINA B. DOSA DIED, MEN OF DEED
CEASED. WHEN R. JOSE KETANTA DIED, THE PIOUS MEN CEASED; AND WHY WAS HIS NAME
CALLED KETANTA? BECAUSE HE WAS THE YOUNGEST OF THE PIOUS MEN. WHEN
R. JOHANAN B. ZAKKAI DIED, THE LUSTRE OF WISDOM CEASED. WHEN RABBAN
GAMALIEL THE ELDER DIED, THE GLORY OF THE TORAH CEASED, AND PURITY AND
ABNEGATION PERISHED. WHEN R. ISHMAEL B. FABI DIED, THE LUSTRE OF THE
PRIESTHOOD CEASED. WHEN RABBI DIED, HUMILITY AND FEAR OF SIN CEASED. R.
PHINEAS B. JAIR SAYS: WHEN [THE SECOND] TEMPLE WAS DESTROYED, SCHOLARS
AND NOBLEMEN WERE ASHAMED AND COVERED THEIR HEAD, MEN OF DEED WERE
DISREGARDED, AND MEN OF ARM AND MEN OF TONGUE GREW POWERFUL. NOBODY
ENQUIRES, NOBODY PRAYS [ON THEIR BEHALF], AND NOBODY ASKS. UPON
WHOM IS IT FOR US TO RELY? UPON OUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN. R. ELIEZER THE
GREAT SAYS: FROM THE DAY THE TEMPLE WAS DESTROYED, THE SAGES BEGAN TO BE LIKE
SCHOOL-TEACHERS, SCHOOL-TEACHERS LIKE SYNAGOGUE-ATTENDANTS, SYNAGOGUE-ATTENDANTS
LIKE COMMON PEOPLE, AND THE COMMON PEOPLE BECAME MORE AND MORE DEBASED; AND
THERE WAS NONE TO ASK, NONE TO INQUIRE. UPON WHOM IS IT FOR US TO RELY? UPON
OUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN. IN THE FOOTSTEPS OF THE MESSIAH INSOLENCE
WILL INCREASE AND HONOR DWINDLE; THE VINE WILL YIELD ITS FRUIT
[ABUNDANTLY] BUT WINE WILL BE DEAR; THE GOVERNMENT WILL TURN TO
HERESY AND THERE WILL BE NONE [TO OFFER THEM] REPROOF; THE MEETING-PLACE
[OF SCHOLARS] WILL BE USED FOR IMMORALITY; GALILEE WILL BE DESTROYED, GABLAN
DESOLATED, AND THE DWELLERS ON THE FRONTIER WILL GO ABOUT [BEGGING] FROM PLACE
TO PLACE WITHOUT ANYONE TO TAKE PITY ON THEM; THE WISDOM OF THE LEARNED
WILL DEGENERATE, FEARERS OF SIN WILL BE DESPISED, AND THE TRUTH WILL BE
LACKING; YOUTHS WILL PUT OLD MEN TO SHAME, THE OLD WILL STAND UP IN THE
PRESENCE OF THE YOUNG, A SON WILL REVILE HIS FATHER, A DAUGHTER WILL RISE
AGAINST HER MOTHER, A DAUGHTER-IN-LAW AGAINST HER MOTHER-IN-LAW, AND A MAN'S
ENEMIES WILL BE THE MEMBERS OF HIS HOUSEHOLD; THE FACE OF THE GENERATION
WILL BE LIKE THE FACE OF A DOG, A SON WILL NOT FEEL ASHAMED BEFORE HIS
FATHER. SO UPON WHOM IS IT FOR US TO RELY? UPON OUR FATHER WHO IS IN HEAVEN.
Now our guardian by virtue of his
Torah is gone. 11 die within a week due to terrorism. Rav Chaim and his learning
prevented this. It was like the flood occurred 7 days after Metushaleh died.

Bambi was Jewish by Judy Gruen

Comments on assimilated
Austrian Jews by Rachamim Pauli
Get ready for a jolting bit of news:
Walt Disney’s 1942 film classic “Bambi” was not dreamed up by anyone at the
Disney studio. Instead, the film was a saccharine whitewash of a 1922 novel
depicting the harsh realities of life in the forest for its animal inhabitants.
Written by Felix Salten, an Austrian Jewish journalist and author, Bambi:
A Story of Life in the Forest was also a parable about antisemitism.
Princeton University Press has just
released a new edition of the novel, now faithfully translated from the
original German by Jack Zipes and complemented by lovely, stippled
illustrations by Alenka Sottler. A full century after its original publishing
date, the authentic story of Bambi and its larger political and moral messages
is coming to light.
Anyone familiar with the original
Disney film will probably immediately think of the tragic scene when Bambi’s
mother is shot and killed by a hunter. Other than that shocking incident, the
studio made the story into a happily-ever-after tale where Bambi grows up,
“marries” Filene and has a family with her, and becomes a confident leader of a
forest where all the animals live together in harmony and only human hunters
pose dangers.
In contrast, Salten’s original novel
is “an allegory about the weak and powerless in the world,” as translator Zipes
writes in his introduction. The story’s grimness is readily apparent.
Many of the animal characters have
colorful personalities, but also live with the understanding that life can end
in an instant. Bitterly cold winters make food scarce. Summers can be so hot
that “the forest was stunned as though hurt by a blinding light. The earth and
the trees, the bushes, and all the beasts, inhaled the intense heat with a kind
of sluggish satisfaction.” While many of the animals share treasured
friendships, animals are also predators. A dog kills a wounded fox. A polecat
devours a mouse. Jays fight one another over food. Bambi charges at male
competitors over Filene, prepared to kill.
Bambi’s harsh experiences in life,
facing constant threats and frequent losses, turn him into a loner—similar to
the fate of the writer who conjured him.
The human hunters, known only as
“He” or “Him,” are the most petrifying enemies, whose scent instills terror
into all the animals, sending them fleeing to safety in nests, burrows, and
hideouts in thickets of the forest. Bambi learns to walk in total silence,
sidestepping every twig and leaf that might rustle. But inevitably, “He” will
catch some animals unaware, leaving the forest bereft of several inhabitants.
Bambi’s mother teaches him from his
earliest days to always be aware of danger, to watch her movements before
following. As he becomes a bit older, she warns him that he must learn to live
alone one day, remaining ever vigilant of the often invisible and silent
dangers surrounding him. When young Bambi cannot understand why his mother will
only allow frolicking in the meadow during the nighttime, she explains that
daytime is a time of grave danger. Though we all love daylight, his mother
says, “we must live this way and be on the alert whenever we move about.”
It is easy to see this as a parable
about endangered minority members — particularly Jews — also having to keep
watch of their surroundings.
Felix Salten learned this lesson
personally. He was born in Pesht, Hungary in 1869 as Siegmund Salzmann,
descended from a long line of rabbis on his father’s side. Thousands of Jews
lived in the Austro-Hungarian Empire during that time, a number that had swelled
as Jews living in the Pale of Western Russia were finally allowed to leave
their ghettos to work in the cities where they were usually treated as
second-class citizens. Despite their efforts to assimilate and adapt as much as
they knew how, Zipes observes, “Adaptation never meant full acceptance.”
The Salzmann family moved to Vienna
and identified as Viennese. But antisemitic bullies in school prompted the
teenaged Siegmund to “unmark” himself as a Jew, and changed his name to Felix
Salten. Drawn to the arts, he became ambitious as a writer and a social
climber, and eventually became editor of a magazine called Die Zeit (The
Time). (My great uncle Dr. Wolfgang Pascheles, doctor of chemistry and
medicine changes name to Pauli and converts to Catholicism because he wanted to
teach in the university which forbade Jews to teach. His younger brother
changes the name too and did not want to bring Jews into the world but my
father did come into the world. My father bullied by Jews for not observing and
Catholics in Austria for not being one of them. My grandfather managed via a
Chinese Righteous of the Nations Diplomat to get a visa and Herr Professor
Pauli and his more famous children fled the Nazis. He ended up being supported
by his traditionally Jewish Brother, Oscar.)
The antisemitism he endured growing
up and its growing menace during that era drew him to the writings of Theodore
Herzl, particularly his pamphlet Der Judenstaat (The Jewish
State). He viewed Herzl as a symbol of resistance and began contributing
articles about Jews and anti-Semitism for Die Zeit as well as
Herzl’s own weekly, Die Welt. He eventually traveled to Palestine
to investigate how Jews were managing to realize the Zionist dream.
His professional success brought him
wealth, and he summered with his family near Austrian forests, intensifying his
lifelong affection for animals. He later owned a hunting preserve, but as his
daughter, Anna, wrote, “Only very rarely did he fire a shot—and then only when
the principles of game keeping demanded it.” His stories and novels about
animals emphasized their powerlessness, a theme he continued for the rest of
his life.
But his own assimilation was no help
once the Nazis occupied Austria in 1938. The following year, Salten and his
wife fled to Zurich, after the Swiss extracted a promise from him to stop
writing about cultural politics. This limited him to writing far less
marketable animal stories.
Salten had already realized that the
assimilation he embraced would not protect him from rising antisemitism. He
reveals this through the character of Gobo, a childhood pal of Bambi but much
weaker physically and emotionally. Long assumed to have been killed, Gobo
shocks the forest population by returning, very much alive, and bragging about
having been rescued by “Him,” whom Gobo insists is not the evil threat everyone
else imagines. Gobo wears a braided ring around his neck, placed by Him, which
the deer believes is a special mark that will immunize him from any further
danger.
After Bambi and the others scoff at
his claims, he tells another friend, “He (Bambi) still can’t deal with the fact
that I’ve become someone different. . . There’s no danger for me on the meadow!
. . . What does he mean by danger? He means well enough and cares for me, but
danger is something for him and the likes of him, not for me.” His confidence
that his assimilation will protect him will soon prove as tragically naïve as
that of Jews throughout the generations who made similar bargains.
Zipes writes that based on the
author’s life experiences with antisemitism, “Bambi is indeed Salten, and
Salten is Bambi. . . Just as Bambi becomes an intrepid roebuck, Salten rose to
fame and then was belittled and alienated from Austrian and German culture. He
was treated just like all the other European Jews in the 1930s and 1940s.”
Despite Bambi’s initial commercial
success, Salten allowed Bambi to be translated into English in 1928 by
Whittaker Chambers, whose knowledge of Austrian German was limited. It was an
error-filled translation that not only missed the true meaning of words but
also missed several key messages. (Chambers was later found to have been a
communist spy.) Incredibly, Salten sold the film rights in 1933 to American
director Sidney Franklin for only $1,000.
Salten died “very much a forgotten
loner,” Zipes writes, but left the legacy of this often profound, touching, and
sad story, one that had never been intended for children in the first place.
Thus the sad life of Isadore Pauli
who fought as a Calvary Lt. for Der Vaterland und Kaiser. Brother Julius died in
Romania in a burning forest fight for the Kaiser. Only to talk of fine memories of the Kaiser, who was
replaced and the Vaterland became a danger to him. From a wealthy banker having
to live his last days at the Chesed from the son he did not want to have who
married a Jewish woman and not interested too much with his Jewish Grandson.
Fortunately for me, my role model was my material grandfather also an
assimilate Jew from German background but a fourth generation American who
called me his 'gold'.
