Parsha Pekeudei

Sefer Shemos is coming to an end. We started the Sefer as being in Egypt. Slavery started approximately at the time of Moshe’s Birth and HASHEM through a series of miracles and wonders frees us and drowns the chariot force of the Egyptians in the sea.

We are then wondering in the Desert and Moshe learns from Yisro to delegate out his leadership. We receive the 10 commandments and over 50 Mitzvos between man and his fellow. The rest of the Sefer is description of building the Mishkan, collecting donations for the Mishkan, interrupted by the incident of the Egel HaZahav, practical workings of making the Mishkan and finally this week it all comes together with the construction and the outfits of the Cohanim. This week we have everything ready for the Korbanos and the dedication of the Mishkan.

38:21 These are the accounts of the tabernacle, even the tabernacle of the testimony, as they were rendered according to the commandment of Moses, through the service of the Levites, by the hand of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest.-- 22 And Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that the LORD commanded Moses. 23 And with him was Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, a craftsman, and a skillful workman, and a weaver in colors, in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and fine linen.—

Kings and Ministers of other nations never made an accounting for their people. Am Yisrael is run by HASHEM. Tehillim 19:9 the ways of the L-RD are straight and rejoices the heart. So, an accounting is displayed for all to see. Nobody has laid a finger or taken a thread of wool, linen, gold, silver or copper.

24 All the gold that was used for the work in all the work of the sanctuary, even the gold of the offering, was twenty and nine talents, and seven hundred and thirty shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary.

A talent is 34.2 kg. 29 talents are 991.8 kg. One Shekel is 0.0114kg per Google or 730 is 8.322 kg or rounding it off a ton of gold. Rounding everything off: Gold (mt), Date. $69.72 Million, Mar 08, 2024. Considering that this was a free will donation of freed slaves in he desert that is a tremendous sum.

25 And the silver of them that were numbered of the congregation was a hundred talents, and a thousand seven hundred and three-score and fifteen shekels, after the shekel of the sanctuary: 26 a beka a head, that is, half a shekel, after the shekel of the sanctuary, for every one that passed over to them that are numbered, from twenty years old and upward, for six hundred thousand and three thousand and five hundred and fifty men.

Unlike the gold, the silver was something that princes of the tribes could afford and they though to make up missing differences but it was not necessary hence the presents given in Parsha Naso. 100 Talents is 3420 kg and 1,775 x 0.0114 kg or 20.235 kg or 3440.235 kg or $2,700,584.48 price of silver Mar. 12th.

27 And the hundred talents of silver were for casting the sockets of the sanctuary, and the sockets of the veil: a hundred sockets for the hundred talents, a talent for a socket. 28 And of the thousand seven hundred seventy and five shekels he made hooks for the pillars, and overlaid their capitals, and made fillets for them.

Most of the silver went into the castings.

29 And the brass of the offering was seventy talents and two thousand and four hundred shekels. 30 And therewith he made the sockets to the door of the tent of meeting, and the brazen altar, and the brazen grating for it, and all the vessels of the altar, 31 and the sockets of the court round about, and the sockets of the gate of the court, and all the pins of the tabernacle, and all the pins of the court round about.

70 x 34.2 kg = 8,857.8 kg  + 2,400 x 0.0114 kg = 27.36 kg or 8,885.16 kg with a price of $13.07 per kg Mar. 12 or $116,129.04. Now ask me why I rounded off the gold to a cubit metric ton because it appeared so perfect the work of HASHEM. Hebrew date Bet Adar Bet 5784.

39:1 And of the blue, and purple, and scarlet, they made plaited garments, for ministering in the holy place, and made the holy garments for Aaron, as the LORD commanded Moses. 2 And he made the ephod of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen. 3 And they did beat the gold into thin plates, and cut it into threads, to work it in the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, the work of the skillful workman.

Gold is a very mailable metal. It can be beaten very thin and made into threads. Mixing it together with threads for the garment of the Cohain HaGadol.

4 They made shoulder-pieces for it, joined together; at the two ends was it joined together. 5 And the skillfully woven band, that was upon it, wherewith to gird it on, was of the same piece and like the work thereof: of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen, as the LORD commanded Moses.

As mentioned in the past, google ‘garment of the high priest’. The work was that similar to a checker board of the four beautiful colors.

6 And they wrought the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold, graven with the engravings of a signet, according to the names of the children of Israel.

The Sifrei Torah and names on the Onyx Stone was written in ancient Hebrew.

7 And he put them on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, to be stones of memorial for the children of Israel, as the LORD commanded Moses. 8 And he made the breastplate, the work of the skillful workman, like the work of the ephod: of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twined linen. 9 It was four-square; they made the breastplate double; a span was the length thereof, and a span the breadth thereof, being double.

Doubled over for thickness and strength.

10 And they set in it four rows of stones: a row of carnelian, topaz, and smaragd [Bereket in Hebrew which is Beryllium and more bluish hew ] was the first row. 11 And the second row, a carbuncle, a sapphire, and an emerald.

There appears to be some sort of a variation between the stone at the end of the first row and that at the end of the second row for a Smaragd translation of the first row is an Emerald or Gardenia while others use Beryllium in translation.

12 And the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst. 13 And the fourth row, a beryl [Tarshish], an onyx, and a jasper; they were enclosed in fittings of gold in their settings.

Tarshish has a greener tint in it or aquamarine in color.

14 And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names, like the engravings of a signet, every one according to his name, for the twelve tribes. 15 And they made upon the breastplate plaited chains, of wreathen work of pure gold. 16 And they made two settings of gold, and two gold rings; and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate. 17 And they put the two wreathen chains of gold on the two rings at the ends of the breastplate. 18 And the other two ends of the two wreathen chains they put on the two settings, and put them on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, in the forepart thereof. 19 And they made two rings of gold, and put them upon the two ends of the breastplate, upon the edge thereof, which was toward the side of the ephod inward.

The various healing properties and one stone per tribe have been mentioned. Together on the Ephod they had a spiritual healing power of the Cohain Gadol.

20 And they made two rings of gold, and put them on the two shoulder-pieces of the ephod underneath, in the forepart thereof, close by the coupling thereof, above the skillfully woven band of the ephod. 21 And they did bind the breastplate by the rings thereof unto the rings of the ephod with a thread of blue, that it might be upon the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate might not be loosed from the ephod; as the LORD commanded Moses.

This gave the Cohain Gadol special crystal vibrations for prayers for the healing of people. The whole combination of the Teva, Table, Menorah and more, gave the Cohain Gadol conductive powers to the next world.

22 And he made the robe of the ephod of woven work, all of blue; 23 and the hole of the robe in the midst thereof, as the hole of a coat of mail, with a binding round about the hole of it, that it should not be rent. 24 And they made upon the skirts of the robe pomegranates of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and twined linen. 25 And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells between the pomegranates upon the skirts of the robe round about, between the pomegranates: 26 a bell and a pomegranate, a bell and a pomegranate, upon the skirts of the robe round about, to minister in; as the LORD commanded Moses.

As I wrote, the bells acted as a door bell on Yom Kippur when the Cohain Gadol entered the Holy of Holies.

27 And they made the tunics of fine linen of woven work for Aaron, and for his sons, 28 and the mitre of fine linen, and the goodly head-tires of fine linen, and the linen breeches of fine twined linen, 29 and the girdle of fine twined linen, and blue, and purple, and scarlet, the work of the weaver in colors; as the LORD commanded Moses.  30 And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote upon it a writing, like the engravings of a signet: HOLY TO THE LORD.

The description in the Prophet Zachariah of the horses, cars and perhaps military tanks of our days having HOLY UNTO HASHEM written on them is similar to some signs I see on religious people’s cars. And should be interpreted in this context.

31 And they tied unto it a thread of blue, to fasten it upon the mitre above; as the LORD commanded Moses.

To place over the cap, from above: And by means of the threads, he would place them (sic) over the cap like a sort of crown. It is impossible to say that the showplate was over the cap, because in “Shechitath Kodashim” (Zevachim 19a) we learned: His [the Kohen Gadol’s] hair was visible between the showplate and the cap, where he would place the tefillin, and the showplate was placed on the [Kohen Gadol’s] forehead. Hence, the cap was above, and the showplate was below, so what is the meaning of: “over the cap, from above” ? Additionally, I found a problem in this [matter, namely that] here the text states, “And they placed upon it a cord of blue wool,” and in the section dealing with the command (Exod. 28:37) it says, “And you shall place it upon a cord of blue wool.” Therefore, I say that this cord of blue wool was composed of threads with which to tie it [the showplate] to the cap since the showplate extended only from ear to ear. Thus, how should he [the Kohen Gadol] tie it onto his forehead? Threads of blue wool were fastened to it [to the showplate] at both its ends and at its center, with which he would tie it [the showplate] and hang it upon the cap when it was on his head. Two threads were at each end, one above [the showplate] and one below [it] toward his forehead, and similarly at its center, for it is easy to tie it in this way, and it is not customary to tie with fewer than two threads. Therefore, it says: “upon a cord of blue wool,” and “upon it a cord of blue wool,” and he would tie their [the threads’] two ends [one from above and one from below the showplate], all of them together behind him, opposite his nape, and he would place it [the showplate] upon the cap. Do not be astonished that it does not say, “cords (פְּתִילֵי) of blue wool” [i.e., in the plural], since they were many [threads, i.e., three threads], because we find in regard to the choshen and the ephod: “And they shall fasten the choshen by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a blue cord” (Exod. 28:28). [There] we are forced [to explain] that there were no fewer than two [threads even though the text states “cord” in the singular] because the two rings of the choshen were on the two ends of the choshen, and the two rings of the ephod were on the two shoulder straps of the ephod opposite them, and according to the [usual] way of tying [rings together], there were four threads [one for every ring]. In any case, fewer than two [threads] is impossible.

32 Thus was finished all the work of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting; and the children of Israel did according to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so did they.

The three stages of the Mishkan were now complete. HASHEM’s plan, the collection and the building. As we say – the end product is from the original thought. The next few sentences are a review of everything that was commanded by HASHEM. It is like a troop review of the general. “All present and accounted for!” So they were brought and laid out piece by piece for review as to show that nothing was missing from the initial plan or list.

33 And they brought the tabernacle unto Moses, the Tent, and all its furniture, its clasps, its boards, its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets; 34 and the covering of rams' skins dyed red, and the covering of sealskins, and the veil of the screen; 35 the ark of the testimony, and the staves thereof, and the ark-cover; 36 the table, all the vessels thereof, and the showbread; 37 the pure candlestick, the lamps thereof, even the lamps to be set in order, and all the vessels thereof, and the oil for the light; 38 and the golden altar, and the anointing oil, and the sweet incense, and the screen for the door of the Tent; 39 the brazen altar, and its grating of brass, its staves, and all its vessels, the laver and its base; 40 the hangings of the court, its pillars, and its sockets, and the screen for the gate of the court, the cords thereof, and the pins thereof, and all the instruments of the service of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting; 41 the plaited garments for ministering in the holy place; the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to minister in the priest's office. 42 According to all that the LORD commanded Moses, so the children of Israel did all the work. 43 And Moses saw all the work, and, behold, they had done it; as the LORD had commanded, even so had they done it. And Moses blessed them.

Everything requested was there with not a thing missing.

40:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 'On the first day of the first month shalt thou rear up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.

On the day that I declared unto you last year: Shemos 12:2 'This month shall be unto you the beginning of months; it shall be the first month of the year to you. Now this month, will be the month of the dedication of the Mishkan too.

3 And thou shalt put therein the ark of the testimony, and thou shalt screen the ark with the veil. 4 And thou shalt bring in the table, and set in order the bread that is upon it; and thou shalt bring in the candlestick, and light the lamps thereof. 5 And thou shalt set the golden altar for incense before the ark of the testimony, and put the screen of the door to the tabernacle. 6 And thou shalt set the altar of burnt-offering before the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting.

All this shall go inside the Mishkan. There will be outside, the brass laver for the Cohanim to wash their hands and feet before the Avoda of, to and for HASHEM as commanded.

7 And thou shalt set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and shalt put water therein. 8 And thou shalt set up the court round about, and hang up the screen of the gate of the court. 9 And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the furniture thereof; and it shall be holy. 10 And thou shalt anoint the altar of burnt-offering, and all its vessels, and sanctify the altar; and the altar shall be most holy. 11 And thou shalt anoint the laver and its base, and sanctify it.

Once everything is in place, Aaron would anoint them with oil.

12 And thou shalt bring Aaron and his sons unto the door of the tent of meeting, and shalt wash them with water. 13 And thou shalt put upon Aaron the holy garments; and thou shalt anoint him, and sanctify him, that he may minister unto Me in the priest's office. 14 And thou shalt bring his sons, and put tunics upon them. 15 And thou shalt anoint them, as thou didst anoint their father, that they may minister unto Me in the priest's office; and their anointing shall be to them for an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.'

Thus, both the Mishkan and Kahuna are going to be established on Rosh Chodesh Nisan 2449.

16 Thus did Moses; according to all that the LORD commanded him, so did he.

Moshe most likely had the Leviim practicing assembling sections of the Mishkan as to be ready with the assembly of everything. Moshe did not sit idly by.

I Googled when was it that the Mishkan was complete. The answer came from Rabbi Pinchas Winston of the Torah Org. https://torah.org/torah-portion/perceptions-5770-vayikra/ in what he wrote 14years ago. It was Chaf Hay Kislev 2448 and that date would later serve for a renewed dedication in the times of the Maccabees.

17 And it came to pass in the first month in the second year, on the first day of the month, that the tabernacle was reared up.

Rashi quotes Chazal as explaining that the Mishkan was put up on the 23rd of Adar and the seven days began at that point, making the eighth day Rosh Chodesh Nissan. (See Rashi on our Parsha Shemos 40:2 and Rashi at the beginning of Shemini) This was followed by a twelve-day period of the offerings of the Nasim as recorded in Parsha Naso. https://mizrachi.org/uncategorized/mishkans-final-touches/

The Ibn Ezra on the other hand claims that the Milluim began on Rosh Chodesh Nissan and were completed by the “Yom HaShemini” which was the eighth of Nissan and only at that stage did the Nisan begin to make their daily offerings. According to his calculations the entire process was completed by the 19th of Nissan. (I encourage you to take a look in the Ibn Ezra to see how he deals with the problem of Pesach of that year that took place during the whole inauguration process).

This is our link from Shemos to Vayikra where we shall continue next week. It also makes sense for Moshe and the Cohanim to familiarize themselves with the area and where everything was.

18 And Moses reared up the tabernacle, and laid its sockets, and set up the boards thereof, and put in the bars thereof, and reared up its pillars. 19 And he spread the tent over the tabernacle, and put the covering of the tent above upon it; as the LORD commanded Moses.

The sides of the Mishkan went up then the tent.

20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the staves on the ark, and put the ark-cover above upon the ark. 21 And he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony; as the LORD commanded Moses.

Then the items starting with the Teva, Shulchan, Menorah, etc. went into the Mishkan. The next few lines we see step by step how each item went inside. They were placed inside as the Nation watched.

22 And he put the table in the tent of meeting, upon the side of the tabernacle northward, without the veil. 23 And he set a row of bread in order upon it before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses.

This shewbread was baked fresh that morning.

24 And he put the candlestick in the tent of meeting, over against the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward. 25 And he lighted the lamps before the LORD; as the LORD commanded Moses. 26 And he put the golden altar in the tent of meeting before the veil; 27 and he burnt thereon incense of sweet spices; as the LORD commanded Moses.

This was to be on the first of Nisan

28 And he put the screen of the door to the tabernacle. 29 And the altar of burnt-offering he set at the door of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered upon it the burnt-offering and the meal-offering; as the LORD commanded Moses.

This was put up and the working checked over by Moshe.

30 And he set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water therein, wherewith to wash; 31 that Moses and Aaron and his sons might wash their hands and their feet thereat; 32 when they went into the tent of meeting, and when they came near unto the altar, they should wash; as the LORD commanded Moses. 33 And he reared up the court round about the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the court. So, Moses finished the work.

It was constructed and ready for you.

34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of meeting, because the cloud abode thereon, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle.—

There were periods that no one could enter the enclosed area of the Mishkan.

36 And whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys. 37 But if the cloud was not taken up, then they journeyed not till the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of the LORD was upon the tabernacle by day, and there was fire therein by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.

This appears to me only during the journeys unto Eretz Yisrael. Once there was a Mikdash the fire on the Altar (Mizbayach) went straight up.

Chazak – Chazak v’ nit Chazak

Getting on in years.

Robert Burns wrote in Scottish: “O wad some Power the giftie gie us,

To see oursels as others see us,

It wad frae monie a blunder free us,

An’ foolish notion”

Translation: Oh, would some Power the gift to give us to see ourselves as others see us, It would fray many a blunder free us, and foolish notion.” The version I remember ended with: “And leave us with an air of devotion.”

There is a big difference between a nursing home for the elderly in the USA vs. Israel. When my mother got Alzheimer, in the States they wanted not only more money but help. In Israel, they were happy for extra help but it was not required like in the States. My mother was treated in Israel as a human being. I can’t say the same treatment from the Jewish Home in the States.

On my recent hotel stay in Israel, I had shaky hands from an old traffic accident when it was time to eat. The people in the dining room wanted to help me. In the States, nobody would get involved. The other day two strangers coming from gym asked me if I needed help putting my walker into the back seat of my car. I did not need it but the gesture was nice. Israelis are always willing to help and honor the elderly. My former co-worker is three years older than I and was happy that somebody picked up his walker to the top of the stairs and helped him up them.

Fast or Feast by Rabbi Yerachmiel Tilles

https://ascentofsafed.com/cgi-bin/ascent.cgi?Name=1370s385-27

Rabbi Elazar Rokeach of Amsterdam sat at the head of the long table crowded with relatives and prominent members of the community. It was Purim, and the great Rabbi was about to begin the festive Purim meal.

The huge table was laden with enormous platters of meat, stuffed fish and other delicacies that had been sent to Rabbi Elazar as meshloach manot (the special gifts of food that are one of the mitzvot of Purim). Fine wines and other beverages were also available in abundance. In between the many courses, Rabbi Elazar held forth on the meaning and significance of the Purim holiday.

The celebration was well underway when a knock was heard at the door. Standing on the threshold were three emissaries of the Prince on an urgent mission. After apologizing profusely for interrupting, they asked to speak to the elderly Rabbi. Rabbi Elazar motioned for them to approach the table and deliver their message. They told him that in a certain district of Holland a dike had burst, and that thousands of innocent people were in danger of drowning.

[Much of the Netherlands ("Low lands") lies below sea level. Over the centuries, a series of dikes were built to protect the Dutch people from being inundated by the ocean. One of these dikes had now given way, and a sizeable portion of the country was in the direct path of the water.] The Prince wanted that the great rabbi should pray for the safety of the threatened citizens.

The Prince's emissaries had heard much about the piety of the saintly Rabbi. Thus, after delivering their message, they fully expected him go off into a corner and pray. Surprisingly, however, they were invited to sit down and join in the festivities.

It was even more curious when Rabbi Elazar ordered every bottle of wine and whiskey remaining in the house to be placed on the table. Within minutes it was covered with an assortment of bottles and decanters. "Now, gentlemen," he continued, "let us fulfill the mitzvah of the day to the best of our abilities. We will drink until we cannot distinguish between 'cursed is Haman' and 'blessed is Mordechai.' "

The dozens of guests, including the venerable Rabbi, quickly drained all of the assorted bottles of liquor. Before the astonished eyes of the Prince's emissaries, the elderly Rabbi jumped up to conduct the revelry, whereupon everyone began dancing around the table.

The emissaries could not believe what they were seeing. The scene in the Rabbi's house was starting to resemble an unruly tavern. Without anyone noticing, the three men crept outside and returned to the royal palace.

The Prince was overjoyed to see them. He told them that their mission had been successful, and that the breach in the dike had been repaired. Instead of death and destruction, the damage had actually been quite minimal.

The emissaries were shocked, especially when they learned that the dike had been fixed at the exact time Rabbi Elazar and his guests were at the height of their carousing!

They proceeded to describe to the Prince everything they had witnessed in the Rabbi's house. Now it was the Prince's turn to be surprised, and on two accounts: How could such an esteemed Rabbi have behaved in such a manner? And more importantly, why was it that the workers had suddenly been able to fix the dike at that exact moment?

A few days later Rabbi Elazar was summoned before the Prince. Officially, it was to be thanked on behalf of the nation. Privately, however, the Prince hoped to clarify exactly what had happened that day.

When the right moment presented itself, the Prince asked him directly. Rabbi Elazar smiled, his countenance exuding an ancient wisdom. "We Jews act in a unique manner," he replied. "Whenever it seems as if G-d is angry, we try to appease Him by fulfilling His will.

"The day the dike broke was Purim," he continued, "when we are commanded to be happy to the point of intoxication. Had I responded by praying and imploring G-d amidst tears, not only would I have failed to fulfill His wishes, but actually transgressed one of His commandments. It was precisely because I recognized the magnitude of the danger that I encouraged everyone to be even more joyful, in the hope it would arouse G-d's mercy."

The Prince was very pleased by Rabbi Elazar's explanation, and sent him home accompanied by a royal entourage.

Biographical note:
Rabbi Elazar Rokeach of Amsterdam (? - 27 Tishrei 1741), author of 'Maaseh Rokeach,' was an outstanding Torah scholar and authority on Jewish law, and also a noted Kabbalist. Before coming to Amsterdam in 1735, Rabbi Elazar served as chief rabbi in several important cities in Poland, among them Brody and Cracow. The non-Jews of Holland also recognized and respected him for his piety and holiness, and the Dutch royal palace even minted a special coin with his likeness in honor of his arrival.

Connection: The importance of increasing simcha joy this entire month of Adar Sheini that started today, + Happy Purim!

The following I cut short the introduction. I received this from Thomas B. It is a harsh read. For those who can’t read Holocaust Books to the end, I suggest read what you can if the one paragraph on Oct. 7th is too harsh. Some of the atrocities happened in the war of independence with mutilation of human organs during the British Administration - what happened to the 35 fighters going to Gush Etzion. I read that in Genesis 1948 by Dan Kuzman.

It is harsher perhaps because like the Nazi Professors our modern Academia and ‘Intellectuals’ are teaching and condoning antisemitism. The only person I ever saw with a button on “People are starving in Biafra” during a tribal genocide in Africa was Rabbi Meir Kahane HY”D. My Rosh Yeshiva and I opposed many of his actions but his concern about genocide in Africa meant that he wanted to stop genocide before it moved on to Jews.

The only thing not different is that after 76 or 77years from the original brutality, the enemy has not changed. What a wicked people and how can a religion sanctify such a thing!

I received this without paragraphs and am editing it both to make the introduction shorter and more readable. This way if the horrors are too much for a sensitive civilized person to bare, they can stop reading. Be prepared for the uncensored maybe even watered-down truth as this happened to 1200 men, women and even infants. In is not like “The five ovens” on Auschwitz. Even only a paragraph of the horrors that Rabbis don’t want to mention. But people should know what these characters did to us. There are places and hints of some things like this in the Medrash Echah read on Tisha B’Av by a few learned people of the destruction of the second Temple and the aftermath.

Dear friends and colleagues,

Hello, Dina! The Pushkin House announced our upcoming conference on social media and immediately received critical messages regarding your position on the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. They wanted to understand your position on this issue before responding. Could you formulate your position and send it to me as soon as possible? Please accept, Madam, the expression of my distinguished greetings, Natasha

By: Dina Rubina Dear Natalia! You've written beautifully about my novels, and I'm so sorry for the time you've wasted, because apparently, we have to cancel our meeting. The universities of Warsaw and Torun have just canceled lectures by the wonderful Russian-speaking Israeli writer Yakov Shechter on the life of Galicia's Jews in the 17th and 19th centuries - "to avoid making the situation worse." I suspected that this would affect me too, since academia is now the main breeding ground for the most disgusting and virulent anti-Semitism, disguised as so-called "criticism of Israel." . I was expecting something like this, and I even decided to write you an email about it... but I put it aside. It's time for me to publish it.

This is what I want to say to all those who expect from me a quick and obsequious report on my position regarding my beloved country, which currently lives (and always has) surrounded by ferocious enemies who seek to destroy it . My country which is waging a just war today against a rabid, ruthless, deceptive and cunning enemy. The last time I apologized was in elementary school, in the principal's office, I was 9 years old. Since then, I have been doing what I think is right, listening only to my conscience and expressing exclusively my understanding of the world order and human laws of justice. Natalia, thank you for your efforts, and I personally ask you to send my answer to all those who are wondering:

"On October 7, Saturday, the Jewish holiday of Simchat Torah, the ruthless, well-trained, well-prepared and well-equipped Hamas terrorist regime of Iran, Hamas, which rules in the Gaza enclave (which Israel left around twenty years ago), attacked dozens of peaceful kibbutzim, and bombarded my country with tens of thousands of rockets. Hamas has committed atrocities that even the Bible cannot describe, atrocities that rival the crimes of Sodom and Gomorrah. Atrocities filmed by the way, by GoPro cameras, the murderers having taken the horror to the point of sending the images to their families or on social networks in real time.

For hours, thousands of happy, blood-drunk beasts raped women, children and men, shooting their victims in the crotch and heads, cutting off the women's breasts and playing football with them, cutting off the babies from the wombs of pregnant women and immediately decapitating them, tying up and burning the small children. There were so many charred bodies that, for many weeks, forensic pathologists could not cope with the enormous workload of identifying individuals.

A friend of mine, who worked in the emergency room of a New York hospital for 20 years, then in Israel for 15 years, was one of the first to arrive in the kibbutzim, as part of a team of rescuers and of doctors. She still hasn't been able to sleep since. While she is an emergency specialist, accustomed to dissected bodies and at the corpses, she fainted when she saw the macabre sight and vomited all the way back in the car.

Among the Hamas militants, Palestinian civilians rushed in, participating in pogroms of unprecedented scale, pillaging, killing, dragging everything they could get their hands on. Among these "Palestinian civilians" were 450 members of this highly regarded organization UNRWA (United Nations Relief Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East). Judging by the utter joy of the population (also captured by thousands of mobile cameras), Hamas is supported by almost the entire population of Gaza. But the essential is there for us: More than two hundred Israelis, including women, children, the elderly and foreign workers, were dragged into the beast's den. A hundred of them are still rotting and dying in Hamas dungeons. It goes without saying that these victims, who continue to be mocked, are of little concern to the “academic community”. But that's not what I'm talking about right now. I am not writing.

But that's not what I'm talking about right now. I am not writing this so that anyone will sympathize with the tragedy of my people. During all these years, while the international community has literally poured hundreds of millions of dollars into this piece of land (the Gaza Strip)l - and UNRWA's annual budget alone is equivalent to a BILLION dollars! - During all these years, Hamas used this money to build an empire with a complex system of underground tunnels, stockpile weapons, teach schoolchildren from primary school to disassemble and assemble a Kalashnikov assault rifle, print textbooks in which hatred of Israel is indescribable, in which even math problems look like this: "There were ten Jews, the shahid killed four, how many are left...", calling for the murder of Jews with every word.

And now, when, finally shocked by the monstrous crime of these bastards, Israel is waging a war of annihilation against the Hamas terrorists, who so carefully prepared this war, who placed thousands of shells in all the hospitals, the schools, kindergartens... - this is where academia around the world is on the defensive, concerned about the "genocide of the Palestinian people" - based, of course, on data provided by... . Who ? The academic community, which was not concerned about the massacres in Syria, nor the massacre in Somalia, nor the mistreatment inflicted on the Uighurs, nor the millions of Kurds persecuted by the Turkish regime for decades, this very worried community, which wears "arafatkas" - the trademark of murderers - around their necks and rallies under the slogan "Liberate Palestine from the river to the sea", which means the total destruction of Israel (and Israelis).

"academics", as polls show, have no idea where this river is, what it is called, where certain borders are located. And it is this same public which asks me "to express a position clear on the issue. Are you really serious? As you know, I have been a professional writer for over fifty years. My novels have been translated into forty languages, including Albanian, Turkish, Chinese, Esperanto... and many more. Now, with great pleasure, without choosing my expressions too much, I sincerely and with all the strength of my soul send to all the brainless "intellectuals" who are interested in my position to go F themselves. In fact, you'll all be going without me soon.

Day 155 start of 23rd week

On Shabbos morning, the patrol car pulled up to our Minyan during the Shema Prayer. Out jumped 3 religious soldiers and a driver stayed in the patrol vehicle. They prayed with us to the end. One or two got Aliyah to Torah and the non-praying driver was given the wrapping up of the second Torah Scroll. Then they were invited by a neighbor to Kiddush.

I told the Officer holding the light compact walkie-talkie that my son used to carry a 40 or more pounder on his back. The ceramic flack jackets look small but are more bullet proof. I told the paramedic that what he carries now looks like the stomach bandage from my old kit. Wow a lighter and more compact army!
