Parsha Acherei Mos
Starting with the diversion of Kosher Animals, Fish, Locusts and Birds and then the women giving birth and the purification, the forms of Metzora and purification and finally the Zav and Zava and purification; we return to the narrative following the death of the two sons of Aaron aka Aharon.
16:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they drew near before the LORD, and died; 2 and the LORD said unto Moses: 'Speak unto Aaron thy brother, that he come not at all times into the holy place within the veil, before the ark-cover which is upon the ark; that he die not; for I appear in the cloud upon the ark-cover.
This coming after the death of the two sons of Aaron brings one to think that it is either because they entered the Holy of Holies without an invitation or the bells of warning of the Cohain HaGadol. Aka ring the bell before you can enter. Entering the Holy of Holies could cause the soul of the Cohain to depart. “For a human cannot see ME and live” (from the Shabbos song ‘My Heart’ by the Ari Zal).
3 Herewith shall Aaron come into the holy place: with a young bullock for a sin-offering, and a ram for a burnt-offering. 4 He shall put on the holy linen tunic, and he shall have the linen breeches upon his flesh, and shall be girded with the linen girdle, and with the linen mitre shall he be attired; they are the holy garments; and he shall bathe his flesh in water, and put them on. 5 And he shall take of the congregation of the children of Israel two he-goats for a sin-offering, and one ram for a burnt-offering. 6 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and make atonement for himself, and for his house.
The description of the Yom Kippur Service starts now with the clothing, bathing and Chatas for atonement consisting of two Billy Goats, a Ram for a Korban Oleh and a Bull for a Korban Chatas.
7 And he shall take the two goats, and set them before the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots upon the two goats: one lot for the LORD, and the other lot for Azazel.
Lots were cast and placed in container just above eye-level were two identical pieces of parchment one was written La SHEM and the other Azazel. Almost always the right hand by the right goat would pick La SHEM and the left Azazel.
9 And Aaron shall present the goat upon which the lot fell for the LORD, and offer him for a sin-offering. 10 But the goat, on which the lot fell for Azazel, shall be set alive before the LORD, to make atonement over him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness.
This would be leaving the area of the Temple to some precipice in the wilderness. It could be as close as the Haas Promenade Area or on the route towards Yericho much further away.
11 And Aaron shall present the bullock of the sin-offering, which is for himself, and shall make atonement for himself, and for his house, and shall kill the bullock of the sin-offering which is for himself.
Again not ‘kill’ but ritually slaughter the bull. He cannot make atonement for the whole nation if he has not made atonement for himself and his greater household. Since in Hebrew Beis and Bas a house/home and a woman has the same root, it is considered that they must have a woman capable of being the wife of the Cohain Gadol in reserve to marry him or even a second wife just in case his wife dies before the atonement.
12 And he shall take a censer full of coals of fire from off the altar before the LORD, and his hands full of sweet incense beaten small, and bring it within the veil. 13 And he shall put the incense upon the fire before the LORD, that the cloud of the incense may cover the ark-cover that is upon the testimony, that he die not.
The combination of the ringing bells and the cloud of incense protect the Cohain Gadol from looking directly at the Shechina and dying.
14 And he shall take of the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it with his finger upon the ark-cover on the east; and before the ark-cover shall he sprinkle of the blood with his finger seven times.
We have this in the Yom Kippur Prayers. One, one plus one, one plus two … as if we were in the Mikdash.
15 Then shall he ritually slaughter the goat of the sin-offering, that is for the people, and bring his blood within the veil, and do with his blood as he did with the blood of the bullock, and sprinkle it upon the ark-cover, and before the ark-cover. 16 And he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleannesses of the children of Israel, and because of their transgressions, even all their sins; and so shall he do for the tent of meeting, that dwells with them in the midst of their uncleannesses. 17 And there shall be no man in the tent of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the holy place, until he come out, and have made atonement for himself, and for his household, and for all the assembly of Israel.
During the Second Mikdash, there was corruption and bribery and often a Cohain Gadol was chosen this way and died in the Holy of Holies such that a rope was attached to him. Rabbi Yishmael the alternative Cohain would then officiate until he and Rabbi Shimon Ben Gamliel were martyred.
18 And he shall go out unto the altar that is before the LORD, and make atonement for it; and shall take of the blood of the bullock, and of the blood of the goat, and put it upon the horns of the altar round about. 19 And he shall sprinkle of the blood upon it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and hallow it from the uncleannesses of the children of Israel. 20 And when he hath made an end of atoning for the holy place, and the tent of meeting, and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands upon the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, even all their sins; and he shall put them upon the head of the goat, and shall send him away by the hand of an appointed man into the wilderness.
It was sent somewhere into the wilderness where it was thrown off the cliff as one would want to throw the sins away.
22 And the goat shall bear upon him all their iniquities unto a land which is cut off; and he shall let go the goat in the wilderness. 23 And Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall put off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy place, and shall leave them there. 24 And he shall bathe his flesh in water in a holy place and put on his other vestments, and come forth, and offer his burnt-offering and the burnt-offering of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 And the fat of the sin-offering shall he make smoke upon the altar. 26 And he that lets go the goat for Azazel shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp. 27 And the bullock of the sin-offering, and the goat of the sin-offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy place, shall be carried forth without the camp; and they shall burn in the fire their skins, and their flesh, and their dung. 28 And he that burns them shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterward he may come into the camp.
On Yom Kippur the Cohain Gadol dipped in the Mikvah five times and this was one of the times.
29 And it shall be a statute forever unto you: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, ye shall afflict your souls, and shall do no manner of work, the home-born, or the stranger that sojourns among you. 30 For on this day shall atonement be made for you, to cleanse you; from all your sins shall ye be clean before the LORD.
This is a reminder of the Holy Day and when the atonement is made.
31 It is a Sabbath of solemn rest unto you, and ye shall afflict your souls; it is a statute forever.
Yom Kippur is like Shabbos meaning above Yom Tov in forbidden Melacha.
32 And the priest, who shall be anointed and who shall be consecrated to be priest in his father's stead, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, even the holy garments. 33 And he shall make atonement for the most holy place, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar; and he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 And this shall be an everlasting statute unto you, to make atonement for the children of Israel because of all their sins once in the year.' And he did as the LORD commanded Moses.
The title of Cohain is inherited from father to son but the Cohain Gadol is elected.
17:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto Aaron, and unto his sons, and unto all the children of Israel, and say unto them: This is the thing which the LORD hath commanded, saying: 3 What man soever there be of the house of Israel, that kills an ox, or lamb, or goat, in the camp, or that kills it without the camp, 4 and hath not brought it unto the door of the tent of meeting, to present it as an offering unto the LORD before the tabernacle of the LORD, blood shall be imputed unto that man; he hath shed blood; and that man shall be cut off from among his people.
We are not dealing with ordinary use of meat but slaughtering for a Korban. That type of slaughter of an offering shall only be in the designated Holy Site of the either the Mishkan or Mikdash.
5 To the end that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they sacrifice in the open field, even that they may bring them unto the LORD, unto the door of the tent of meeting, unto the priest, and sacrifice them for sacrifices of peace-offerings unto the LORD. 6 And the priest shall dash the blood against the altar of the LORD at the door of the tent of meeting, and make the fat smoke for a sweet savor unto the LORD.
Only the Cohain shall sprinkle the blood. [So what is with the story of Eliyahu HaNovi? We have a tradition that he was a reincarnation of Pinchas the Cohain, grandson of Aaron. Another reason it was OK for it was at the one time only Command of HASHEM vs. the priests of Baal.]
7 And they shall no more sacrifice their sacrifices unto the satyrs, after whom they go astray. This shall be a statute forever unto them throughout their generations.
Common place fertility cult sacrifices.
8 And thou shalt say unto them: Whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that offers a burnt-offering or sacrifice, 9 and brings it not unto the door of the tent of meeting, to sacrifice it unto the LORD, even that man shall be cut off from his people. 10 And whatsoever man there be of the house of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that eats any manner of blood, I will set My face against that soul that eats blood, and will cut him off from among his people.
The eating of blood in meat or eggs is forbidden. Koshering by soaking and salting removes the blood and anything that remains is considered juice. Rabbi Mimran Shlita likes mean roasted like liver so that it is well done and no blood. The Halacha for ordinary people is soaking and salting and it can be found in the Code of Jewish Law aka Kitzur Shulchan Aruch or Mishnah Berurah.
11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood; and I have given it to you upon the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement by reason of the life. 12 Therefore I said unto the children of Israel: No soul of you shall eat blood, neither shall any stranger that sojourns among you eat blood.
No blood this includes non-Jewish residents or even candidates for conversion to Judaism.
13 And whatsoever man there be of the children of Israel, or of the strangers that sojourn among them, that taketh in hunting any beast or fowl that may be eaten, he shall pour out the blood thereof, and cover it with dust. 14 For as to the life of all flesh, the blood thereof is all one with the life thereof; therefore I said unto the children of Israel: Ye shall eat the blood of no manner of flesh; for the life of all flesh is the blood thereof; whosoever eats it shall be cut off.
The punishment is being cut off in the next world and/or dying childless.
15 And every soul that eats that which dies of itself, or that which is torn of beasts, whether he be home-born or a stranger, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the even; then shall he be clean. 16 But if he wash them not, nor bathe his flesh, then he shall bear his iniquity.
Trafe or Nevailah.
18:1 And the LORD spoke unto Moses, saying: 2 Speak unto the children of Israel, and say unto them: I am the LORD your God. 3 After the doings of the land of Egypt, wherein ye dwelt, shall ye not do; and after the doings of the land of Canaan, whither I bring you, shall ye not do; neither shall ye walk in their statutes.
You must avoid behaving like the idolaters of Mitzrayim or Canaan. Do not follow their laws. Implying that you have Torah Laws, Statutes and Ordinances.
4 Mine ordinances shall ye do, and My statutes shall ye keep, to walk therein: I am the LORD your God. 5 Ye shall therefore keep My statutes, and Mine ordinances, which if a man do, he shall live by them: I am the LORD.
I have given you the Torah as your guide and therefore do as you have been told.
6 None of you shall approach to any that is near of kin to him, to uncover their nakedness. I am the LORD.
The Torah now forbids going and having incestual relationships.
7 The nakedness of thy father, and the nakedness of thy mother, shalt thou not uncover: she is thy mother; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. The nakedness of thy sister, the daughter of thy father, or the daughter of thy mother, whether born at home, or born abroad, even their nakedness thou shalt not uncover. thou shalt not uncover; for theirs is thine own nakedness. 11 The nakedness of thy father's wife's daughter, begotten of thy father, she is thy sister, thou shalt not uncover her nakedness.
But if your father had a son or daughter beforehand or your mother had a son or daughter beforehand as strangers essentially they could marry. See Tractate Shabbos where Rav Chiya met his nephew and asked about his brother and then his sister and from the answer learned that both had passed away. So it was permissible for Rabbi Chiya’s father with one child to marry a woman with a child of the opposite sex and the two ‘stranger’ children to marry.
12 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's sister: she is thy father's near kinswoman. 13 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy mother's sister; for she is thy mother's near kinswoman. 14 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy father's brother, thou shalt not approach to his wife: she is thine aunt. 15 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy daughter-in-law: she is thy son' wife; thou shalt not uncover her nakedness. 16 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of thy brother's wife: it is thy brother's nakedness. 17 Thou shalt not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter; thou shalt not take her son's daughter, or her daughter's daughter, to uncover her nakedness: they are near kinswomen; it is lewdness. 18 And thou shalt not take a woman to her sister, to be a rival to her, to uncover her nakedness, beside the other in her lifetime.
Before the Torah, Yacov could marry Rachel and Leah but afterwards he could only marry one during the lifetime of the other sister.
19 And thou shalt not approach unto a woman to uncover her nakedness, as long as she is impure by her uncleanness. 20 And thou shalt not lie carnally with thy neighbor’s wife, to defile thyself with her.
Family Purity meaning that one’s wife during her menstruation is forbidden to her own husband until Mikvah.
21 And thou shalt not give any of thy seed to set them apart to Molech, neither shalt thou profane the name of thy God: I am the LORD.
This appears to be a warming up of the new born out of the womb that turned into a god of fire and heat. One would than hold the newborn over a fire. Today we have heated rooms and diapers/blankets available.
22 Thou shalt not lie with mankind, as with womankind; it is abomination.
In 20:13 this is further detailed. Homosexuality brings about Kares (cutting off of the soul and dying childless or with warning the death penalty. There is a wasting of seed like that of Er and Onan, the sons of Yehuda married to Tamar who were killed by the L-RD. The Torah forbids these disgusting acts and is not homophobic. Lesbianism is not encouraged but since no seed wasted, there is no Kares or death sentence involved. The Torah views them like mischievous women and a Cohain should not marry them.
23 And thou shalt not lie with any beast to defile thyself therewith; neither shall any woman stand before a beast, to lie down thereto; it is perversion.
The leaders of WOKE Culture want Homosexuality, Unisex, and Bestiality to be normal and destroy the Western Society and Culture. The late Rabbi Marvin Antelman Zal wrote about these pernicious ways in his book “To Eliminate the Opiate”.
24 Defile not ye yourselves in any of these things; for in all these the nations are defiled, which I cast out from before you. 25 And the land was defiled, therefore I did visit the iniquity thereof upon it, and the land vomited out her inhabitants.
Permiscuity like this will cause the land to vomit the Bnei Yisrael out.
26 Ye therefore shall keep My statutes and Mine ordinances, and shall not do any of these abominations; neither the home-born, nor the stranger that sojourns among you-- 27 for all these abominations have the men of the land done, that were before you, and the land is defiled-- 28 that the land vomit not you out also, when ye defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. 29 For whosoever shall do any of these abominations, even the souls that do them shall be cut off from among their people. 30 Therefore shall ye keep My charge, that ye do not any of these abominable customs, which were done before you, and that ye defile not yourselves therein: I am the LORD your God.
Keep the L-RD G-D in mind and keep yourself far away from these things.
The question arises as follows against myself: Most Orthodox Jews avoid work and especially writing during Chol HaMoed. On the other hand, an Orthodox Rabbi like Rachamim Pauli does not stop writing. So an explanation is required.
The answer can be found from even before my days as a paramedic patrolling the Lebanese Border on call 24/7. It goes back to things I did after the Yom Kippur War working up to 3PM in the winter time Erev Shabbos when Shabbos comes in 4:15 PM or so. In the first year after the Yom Kippur War the services of many Jews were needed Chol HaMoed and during the Yom Kippur War Orthodox Jews were called in to work in Defense Factories on Shabbos. Many did not punch ‘in’ as that was not for saving a life and did not get paid the double time. I was not doing any work at that time but I was sitting and praying and learning Torah non-stop.
There are Rabbis who receive questions on Yom Tov or Shabbos. I asked Rabbi Zvi Drapkin something concerning making soda from a cartridge some 50 plus years ago. Rabbi “Chaim” and other great Rabbis never knew rest from questions.
What is going on in the USA is no less Pekuach Nefesh for the Jewish Students at Harvard, Yale (a girl almost lost an eye) and Columbia. Who am I to sit idly by while my fellow Jewish Americans are facing life threatening incidents?
PS My nephew, Menashe, learned to be a scribe. He wrote Megillah Shir HaShirim aka Song of Songs from Rosh Chodesh Nisan until Erev Pesach. He sent it for checking and a regular scribe corrected on line photos and Menashe touched up on Chol HaMoed as it was needed for Shabbos Chol HaMoed.

Staying Honest in Politics by Rachamim Pauli
I had the privilege to meet a few people who were able to avoid the temptation and remain honest in Politics.
Rabbi Yacov Mizrachi of Agudas Yisrael. He was one of the few members of the Knesset from the Party. I first met him when both of us got off a bus from Rehovot to Ashdod. He was a man around his late sixties or early seventies. He asked me if I knew Rav M. I told him that I was walking by his Yeshiva and House and he could walk with me. I was around the age of 26 and carrying two packages. He wrestled one from me and told me that he would help me. I had no idea that he was one of my favorite members of the Knesset battling for the religious Jews.
The walk was through sand dunes as it was the shortest for me. We chatted and I told him that I was an English Teacher and could not teach in the Mizrachi System. He gave me the name of the Principal of the Independent School System in Rehovot. Finally, as we parted, he gave me his name “Yacov Mizrachi”. Not MK not HaRav but just Yacov.
Once he managed to get some money for his pet project a Yeshiva in Rosh HaAyin. Another MK from Aguda managed to swipe the money. He went to the Kabbalist Rav Mordechai Sarabi of Righteous Memory. The Rav said, “What do you want HaOlam HaZeh or HaOlam HaBa? [Your portion in this world or the next?] Let the other politician take his portion is this world.
Rabbi Yosef Azran ZTZAL was at the Pideon HaBen of my oldest son. {Redemption of the First Born (Bechor)}. Rav Yosef saw that I had never been at a Pideon and he ran home to bring gold to put on the baby (now 53years old) to make him more valuable than the 5 Shekels of Silver.
Rav Azran became the Sephardi Rabbi of Rishon LeTzion and then a member of the Knesset for Shass. He was undermined along with other honest people like the founder of Shass the Sephardi Rabbi of Ranana Rabbi Peretz and HaRav Eli Yishai by a corrupt wheeler-dealer in the party.
Rabbi Yerachmiel Boyer Shlita, my Rav for close to 40years on many issues, was elected Mayor of Bnei Brak from Degel HaTorah. The former mayor from Aguda had a very large office and a very large staff. Rabbi Boyer saw the corruption and rot in the Charedi Town and felt ill. He did is best from his modest and relatively small office to repair the damage of the previous mayor. One day he took on a new staffer and the younger man asked him how he managed to withstand temptation and the corruption. He realized that he had been there perhaps less than a year but had become used to the corrupt people that it no longer bothered him as of first.
Last but not least Shammai Milberg Zal. He was a Jew who spoke German and managed to live out World War II in Switzerland. He became the head of the Mizrachi Party in Petach Tikva. He was straight in his dealings like a ruler and did not go to the left or the right. He lived not as an owner of an apartment but on Key Money – bought the right from the owner to live there for his whole life without paying rent. He could not afford a car and drove a motor cycle.
He was loyal to the Party in his Chapter that they moved him up to the ‘castle’ in Tel Aviv with a larger salary and he was on the list of people to become a Knesset Member. He saw the wheeling and dealing in the ’castle’ in Tel Aviv. He could not stand the corruption. He asked to go back to his clean chapter in Petach Tikva.
The stories above have a relationship to the Bar Mitzvah of my grandnephew, Daniel Shammai. Daniel is the great-grandson of the original Shammai. As it is the Ashkenazi custom, he was named after Shammai had passed on. My late father-in-law as his Sandak.
